Trivers and Willard (1973) predicted that stressed adult female mammals may enhance their fitness by skewing offspring sex ratios and maternal investment to favor daughters. The present study investigated whether stressing young hamsters might also influence sex ratio and growth of subsequent offspring. Control females received food ad libitum (A) on Days 1-50 postpartum (AA). Experimental females were food-restricted (R) either on Days 1-25 (RA), Days 26-50 (AR), or Days 1-50 (RR) postpartum. Subjects were mated when 91-95 days old. Litter sizes and survivorship (= % litters within a treatment that contained at least one pup), sex ratio (= % males), and pup weights in the next generation were recorded every fifth day from parturition until Day 25 postpartum. Control litters contained significantly more offspring at birth than did RR litters. Sex ratio was significantly higher at birth for AA litters than for the other treatments. Postpartum sex ratio within each group remained similar to that recorded at birth. RR litters contained significantly fewer pups compared to the other three treatments from Days 5-25. RR female pups weighed significantly more at birth than their counterparts in the other treatments. Weights of males at birth were similar in all treatments. By Day 25, both male and female RR pups weighed significantly less than control, AR, and RA pups. Food restriction early in life may have long-term consequences on sex ratio and pup growth in golden hamsters.  相似文献

Female hamsters (Generation 1) were fed ad libitum or were food-restricted to 65-75% of the amount consumed by controls during their first 50 days of life. Subjects were mated at 91 days of age. Their offspring (Generation 2) were fed ad libitum throughout the experiment, and female offspring were also mated at 91 days of age. Generation 3 litters were monitored every fifth day from birth until Day 25 post partum for litter size, sex ratio, and pup weights. Although there were no significant differences in Generation 3 litter sizes at birth, litters descended from food-restricted Generation 1 females (Group R) were significantly smaller on Days 5-25 than litters descended from control Generation 1 females (Group A). Sex ratios remained significantly greater in Group A than in Group R litters from birth to Day 25 but did not vary over time, suggesting similar post-partum mortality rates for both male and female pups. Weights of Generation 3 male and female pups did not vary significantly within treatments at any time. Group A males weighed significantly more than Group R males from birth through Day 25, but weights of Group A and Group R females were always similar. Food restriction early in life may have long-term consequences on sex ratios of subsequent generations in hamsters.  相似文献

Two female African wild dogs (Lycaon pictus) in a pack of 10 animals at the Bronx Zoo gave birth to litters of nine and seven pups within a 2‐day period. Two pups from the litter of seven died before they were 2 weeks old, but the other 14 survived past weaning. Litter size, sex ratio, and pup developmental stages were all consistent with data obtained from other captive‐ and wild‐born litters. Both dams were very attentive to their litters, and during the pups' first 2 weeks spent >90% of their time in the dens with the pups. By 2 days after birth and during their first 2 weeks of life, the pups spent 86% of their time in a nursing position. Before parturition and during the first week post‐partum, one of the dams (DAL) was clearly dominant to the other (WHI). However, the females' dominance rank reversed 2 weeks post‐partum. On two occasions during the pups' first 2 weeks DAL stole and reared one of WHI's pups, but between Weeks 3 and 4 all of DAL's pups were stolen and WHI raised both litters as one until they were weaned. The pups began spending time out of their den at approximately 1 month of age. The timing of the births, the design of the wild dogs' management facility, and the presence of several dens in different enclosures within the facility all likely contributed to the successful rearing of the litters. The pups in both litters were very similar in size because of the short interval between births, so one litter did not have a competitive advantage over the other with respect to gaining access to the dam for milk. The facility's design helped mitigate aggression within the pack, and the presence of multiple dens enabled to dams to move the pups to different den sites and allowed the two females to stay visually and spatially apart from each other while remaining with the pack. 1.  Optimal parental sex allocation depends on the balance between the costs of investing into sons vs. daughters and the benefits calculated as fitness returns. The outcome of this equation varies with the life history of the species, as well as the state of the individual and the quality of the environment.
2.  We studied maternal allocation and subsequent fecundity costs of bank voles, Myodes glareolus , by manipulating both the postnatal sex ratio (all-male/all-female litters) and the quality of rearing environment (through manipulation of litter size by −2/+2 pups) of their offspring in a laboratory setting.
3.  We found that mothers clearly biased their allocation to female rather than male offspring regardless of their own body condition. Male pups had a significantly lower growth rate than female pups, so that at weaning, males from enlarged litters were the smallest. Mothers produced more milk for female litters and also defended them more intensively than male offspring.
4.  The results agree with the predictions based on the bank vole life history: there will be selection for greater investment in daughters rather than sons, as a larger size seems to be more influencial for female reproductive success in this species. Our finding could be a general rule in highly polygynous, but weakly dimorphic small mammals where females are territorial.
5.  The results disagree with the narrow sense Trivers & Willard hypothesis, which states that in polygynous mammals that show higher variation in male than in female reproductive success, high-quality mothers are expected to invest more in sons than in daughters.  相似文献

Seventy pregnant adult Wistar strain rats were randomly assigned to 1 of 12 exposure groups; 9th or 17th day irradiation at the 0-, 0.1-, 0.2-, 0.4-, 0.6-, or 0.8-Gy dosage level. On the first day of postnatal life, litters were reduced to a maximum of eight pups per litter. A total of 508 pups were observed for the age of acquisition of five reflexes (air righting, surface righting, visual placing, negative geotaxis, auditory startle) and the appearance of four physiologic markers (pinna detachment, eye opening, vaginal opening, testes descent). A dose-response relationship for alterations in reflex acquisition and physiologic marker appearance was observed due to exposure above 0.2 Gy on the 17th day of gestation. Therefore, 0.2 to 0.4-Gy exposure may represent a threshold range for exposure on the 17th day using these postnatal parameters.  相似文献

83 (40%) litters with an average of 3.42 pups and unbiased sex ratio were born of 207 couples. Fertility and litter average were higher in summer and autumn. Most females were fertilized on the 1st day spent with a male, which supports the mating-induced ovulation hypothesis. Infantile mortality was highest at birth and during the 1st 5 days of life. 26% of the pups died before weaning (day 25), i.e. an average of 1 per litter.  相似文献

Although rats in various stages of pregnancy are routinely shipped by vendors, the effects of shipping on pregnancy outcomes have not been reported. This study examined the effects of shipping rats 1 day after mating. Two outbred stocks, (Crl:CD(SD), Crl:WI(Han)) and one inbred strain (F344/Crl) of rats (n = 300/strain) were mated in a vendor barrier room at 3‐month intervals five times, and either shipped the next day (total time in transit ~24 hr) or held in the room of origin until parturition. The pregnancy status, length of gestation, number of pups born per female, sex ratio of pups born, and neonatal mortality were compared between transported and nontransported rats. These pregnancy and litter parameters were also compared among strains and examined for seasonality; no seasonal effects were observed. Neonatal mortality was negligible at less than 2% in any of the groups. All sex ratios were normal. Transportation affected pregnancy rates only in the F344/Crl, in which 81.8% of the nontransported versus 70% of the transported rats had pups (p = 0.025). Overall, slightly fewer transported rats were pregnant, but they had larger litters (10.08 compared with 9.68, p = 0.02, pooling across all three strains) so produced the same numbers of pups. A total of 77 ± 8% of transported rats had gestation periods of 22 days or more compared with only 52 ± 10% in the nontransported rats. The reason for larger litters in transported females is unclear. Longer gestation in transported females may be due to facultative embryonic diapause, which might have implications for reproductive toxicology.  相似文献

Male mediated caffeine effects over two generations of rats   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Caffeine exposure of a male rat prior to mating affected his progeny and the progeny of a second generation. The dose chosen, 30 mg/kg per day given orally, was approximately equivalent to a caffeine intake of 10-12 cups of brewed coffee daily. In the first (F1) generation caffeine consumption of the sires for a minimum period of 15 days prior to mating with drug naive females, caused significant fetal growth retardation of both sexes and an increased postnatal mortality of pups between weeks 1 and 2, many of which displayed characteristics of runts. Persistent caffeine effects were also found in a second (F2) generation obtained by back breeding male and female F1 offspring from control and treated groups. The F2 pups of both sexes, from the female breeding line, were born significantly heavier when compared with their control counterparts. In the male breeding line, 33% of the litters conceived were aborted in utero, and among the young F2 pups born runts were again evident. At the conclusion of the breeding for the first generation the testes of the FO sires were studied after they received caffeine for 38 consecutive days. The experimental testes showed a marked degeneration characterized by significant overall size reduction, breakdown of the germinal epithelium, accumulation of cellular debris in the lumen of the seminiferous tubules, and significant reduction in the abundance of mature spermatozoa. On ultrastructural examination there appeared to be genetic damage to the spermatozoa where nucleic cysts and pouches were seen.  相似文献

Pup Shoving by Adult Naked Mole-Rats   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Adult naked mole‐rats (Heterocephalus glaber) characteristically perform an unusual behavior toward young: they shove small pups frequently and vigorously around the nest. We studied 15 litters in five captive colonies to quantify which adults shove pups, changes in shoving frequencies as pups develop, how external disturbances affect pup‐shoving frequencies, and behavior of juveniles that were not shoved as pups. In all litters and colonies the breeding female shoved pups significantly more often than any other individual. Breeding females also shoved adult colony mates, but at far lower rates than they shoved pups. Breeding males shoved pups about half as often as did breeding females. Together, the parents shoved pups ten times more often than did nonbreeders. Frequencies of pup shoving peaked when pups were 3–4 wk old, roughly coincident with weaning. When colonies were disturbed experimentally, frequencies of pup shoving increased dramatically, whereas rates at which nonbreeding adults were shoved decreased sharply. We separated four newly‐weaned litters and raised half the pups apart from their colony. When these litters were reunited 4–9 wk later, the unshoved (experimental) pups were the same size as the frequently shoved (control) pups, but the unshoved pups were significantly less likely to flee from a disturbance. Shoving of small pups encourages them to flee from danger, and also may enforce weaning.  相似文献

The effects of a lowered rearing temperature on body weight, core temperature (Tc) and norepinephrine(NE)-stimulated thermogenesis were investigated in 16- to 17-day-old Zucker rat pups. 16-day-old fatty pups were significantly heavier (9%) than lean littermates in litters reared at 18 degrees C ("cold-reared") but not in litters reared at 25 degrees C ("normally-reared"). After 2 h isolation at 25 degrees C, Tc of lean pups was slightly higher (37.1 degrees C) in cold-reared litters than in normally-reared litters (36.4 degrees C), while fatty pups reared at either temperature were severely hypothermic (Tc = 33 - 34 degrees C). At an ambient temperature of 25 degrees C Tc in fatty and lean cold-reared pups increased to 39.5 degrees C after subcutaneous injection of 800 micrograms/kg NE. Normally-reared lean pups reached the same peak Tc after NE injection, while their fatty littermates reached a significantly lower peak Tc of 38.4 degrees C. The hypothermia associated with the onset of excess fat deposition in suckling fatty Zucker rats is not caused by a reduced capacity for NE-stimulated thermogenesis.  相似文献

This study was conducted to assess the effects of endophyte-infected Acremonium coenophialum tall fescue (KY-31) seed (80% infected) on lactation in CD-1 dams and suckling performance of pups as measured by pup survival and growth rates. Twenty-four pairs of mature CD-1 mice were randomly allocated to four dietary treatments: 1) 100% mouse chow ad libitum; 2) 40% endophyte-infected tall fescue seed and 60% mouse chow (w/w); 3) reduced intake (100% chow), adjusted daily to the intake level of Treatment 2; and 4) 60% infected tall fescue seed and 40% chow. The mice were preconditioned on their respective diets for 100 d prior to 96 h of cohabitation between pairs of males and females. At parturition the litters were removed, and each dam was given a litter of six pups of equal weight, size and sex ratio to suckle for 15 days. All pups given to all the dams were born to other mice that were not part of the study and had not been exposed to endophyte-containing diets. Dams and litter weights were measured daily for 15 consecutive days. The combined body weight measurements of litters from dams fed the tall fescue containing diets (Treatments 2 and 4) were significantly lower (2.07 +/- 0.41 g/d) than that of litters from dams fed the chow containing diets (Treatments 1 and 3) during the suckling trial (P<0.05). Similarly, nine of ten (90%) dams fed the chow containing diets maintained five or more pups (5.5 +/- 0.2) throughout the study as compared to five of nine (55.6%) dams fed the tall fescue containing diets that maintained less than five pups (4.5 +/- 0.2).  相似文献

This study describes the first systematic observations of maternal behavior and pup development of captive Key Largo woodrats (Neotoma floridana smalli) during the first 30 days of life. Data were collected on six litters of pups born to four dams between December 2006 and July 2007. Gestations for the six litters averaged 38 days and all dams exhibited adequate maternal care postpartum. Key Largo woodrat maternal and pup behavior was generally consistent with behavior observed in other woodrat species. We observed greater pup independence from the dam and a marked change in social interactions between days 13–22. No sex differences in pup development or maternal care were observed. Activity budgets were consistent across dams and across days within the observation period. Although dams spent much of their time inactive with pups attached to their teats, the average percent of intervals with at least one pup observed attached decreased steadily during the 30‐day observation period. Attachment of pups to the dams' teats did not interfere with dams' ability to forage. Feeding with pups attached and feeding following active detachment of pups were both common. Dams were observed to actively detach pups by performing a circular turning motion. This information has application for the future management of this endangered species in captivity and in the wild. Data compilations were made for three parameters pertaining to reproduction in a domestic strain (14 years) and a wild stock (4 years) of commensal house mice: (a) the percentage of females mated that produced litters; (b) the average number of pups per litter; and (c) the sex ratio of the pups in the litters. Fecundity and fertility varied seasonally in both domestic and wild mice. More females become pregnant and litter sizes were larger in the spring, summer, and fall months than during the winter season. Sex ratios also varied seasonally with more male biased litters produced during the 4 winter months. There appear to be seasonal shifts in productivity for both stocks of mice and these seasonal trends have not been altered by domestication under laboratory conditions. In spite of the fact that house mice are generally opportunistic, it is possible that there has been selection in the mice for shifting rates of production in relation to the best seasons of the year in terms of climate and resource availability. The higher production of males during summer months may be geared toward greater success in dispersal at that season and a higher probability that the males can find a territory and mate successfully in summer rather than winter. These results have potential implications for animal breeders and for those who maintain mouse colonies to produce animals for scientific investigations.  相似文献

We sought evidence for postnatal resource limitation among littermates of the domestic rabbit Oryctolagus cuniculus , and asked whether deaths of indi~vidual pups benefit survivors by increasing their share of milk. Milk ingestion, growth and mortality of 10 chinchilla-breed captive litters were recorded between birth and age 21 d. That milk limits growth and survival was indicated by larger litters showing lower weight gain and higher mortality, and by a significant positive correlation between milk ingested by individual pups and weight increase. Within litters, pups with higher birth weights grew faster, and weight hierarchies became increasingly stable over the 3 weeks, suggesting that advantages accrued during gestation were progressively consolidated during lactation. After individual pups died, the total daily milk weight obtained by the litter was generally unaffected but per capita milk consumption and growth of surviving pups increased, and increases in per capita consumption were greater in smaller litters. The most successful competitors for milk apparently benefit from the deaths of their littermates by obtaining an increased share of an undiminished daily food supply. This relationship has not previously been demonstrated in any vertebrate.  相似文献

We examined effects on the parental behaviour of male Mongolian gerbils, Meriones unguiculatus, of the sex and number of pups in a litter. Recent fathers interacting with foster litters consisting entirely of newborn males decreased the time that they spent in contact with a litter the greater the number of pups it contained. However, fathers that interacted with litters composed entirely of newborn females showed no change in the time they spent in contact with a litter as a function of its size. Fathers responded similarly to litters of 1- and 3-day-old female pups, but their responses to male pups changed from avoidance to approach as the age of males increased from 1 day to 3 days, and fathers made anosmic by intranasal administration of zinc-sulfate solution did not avoid neonatal litters. Results of a correlational study revealed that the more time males spent with newborn young during a 30-min test, the greater their latency to mate with their partners in postpartum oestrus and the shorter the duration of their mating effort during the 24 h immediately after parturition. We discuss these findings as consistent with the view that androgen-mediated olfactory stimuli produced by newborn male Mongolian gerbils make them unattractive to fathers, possibly functioning to increase the time that recent fathers mate-guard while their partners are in postpartum oestrus.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the cryogenic effect of antifreeze protein (AFP) on transgenic mouse ovaries which is expressed AFP type III from Ocean pout and the production of live offspring by orthotopic transplantation of cryopreserved mouse ovaries. In this study, whole transgenic and nontransgenic mouse ovaries were vitrified with 20% DMSO and 20% EG in M2 medium supplemented with 0.5 M sucrose. All vitrified and toxicity control and fresh ovaries were transplanted orthotopically into ovariectomized recipients bilaterally. For fresh ovaries transplantation, 5 mice delivered litters of 18 and 19 live pups in first and second matings, respectively. For toxicity control of chemicals, 6 mice delivered litters of 22 and 23 live pups. For nontransgenic mouse ovaries (vitrified) transplantation, 7 mice delivered litters of 22 and 23 live pups. For transgenic mouse ovaries (vitrified) transplantation, 10 mice delivered litters of 35 and 37 live pups. Litter sizes from pups of freshly transplanted ovaries were not significantly different from AFP-transplanted transgenic ovaries but those from nontransgenic-transplanted ovaries were significantly different from the AFP-transplanted transgenic ovaries group (P < 0.05). In this study, for the first time, it was shown that the ovarian tissue of AFP transgenic mice was protected from cryopreservation by vitrification. These results demonstrate that a normal reproductive lifespan can be restored by orthotopic transplantation of AFP transgenic-vitrified ovary.  相似文献

Summary. Infantile dilated cardiomyopathy (IDCM) in Portuguese water dogs (PWD) involves an autosomal recessive trait. Based on our previous studies we have tested the hypothesis that this disorder may be correlated with taurine deficiency. The plasma taurine levels of 249 puppies from 36 litters obtained from breeders at six and nine weeks of age, an early stage when usually the clinical symptoms are not manifested, were analyzed. Additional samples were collected from sixteen puppies that we raised from four litters. These litters were born to a dam that had low plasma taurine as a puppy and two known carrier sires. From the random samples obtained from the breeders, forty-eight pups from fourteen litters and twenty-nine pups from seven litters had low plasma taurine at least at one and at two time points, respectively. Also several puppies showing low plasma taurine died due to IDCM. Furthermore, from the sixteen pups we raised, fifteen had at least low taurine level at one and seven had at two time points. Considered together, these results strongly support the view that IDCM in PWD is associated with abnormal taurine metabolism that leads to low plasma taurine at early stages before the clinical symptoms appear.  相似文献

This study characterized (in vivo) morphological and functional parameters of reproductive organs of adult male lynx (n = 3) prior to, during, and after the breeding season (n = 3). Size and morphology of the reproductive tract were monitored by transcutaneous (testes) and transrectal (accessory sex glands) ultrasonography. Semen was collected by electroejaculation. Ejaculate volume, sperm number, motility, and morphology of spermatozoa as well as testosterone concentrations in blood serum and feces were evaluated. The testes and prostate had seasonal changes in size and echotexture. The mean (+/- S.D.) maximum and minimum testicular volume were 2.8 +/- 0.8 cm3 and 1.5 +/- 0.3 cm3, respectively. Fecal testosterone concentrations were highest in February (1240 +/- 393 ng/g feces), with a second increase in May (971 +/- 202 ng/g feces), but concentrations were lowest in January (481 +/- 52.9 ng/g feces). Ejaculate volume, total sperm number and percentage of motile, and intact spermatozoa were maximal in March (the middle of the breeding season). In one of the eight litters, multiple paternity was proven; however, in the remaining seven litters, all 16 cubs were sired by the same male. This particular male had the most developed and active testes and best semen quality, which may be important for sperm competition.  相似文献

Mothers were removed from rat litters for 1 or 10 hr per day on days 3 to 9 following birth. This procedure resulted in reduced open field defaecation and increased body weight in the offspring tested at approximately 70 days, but did not affect open field ambulation, comparing with untreated control litters. Since 1- and 10-hr maternally deprived groups did not differ from one another it is not possible to attribute conclusively the effects to maternal absence per se, and the effects could be due to incidental disturbance of the pups in treated litters or to maternal reaction to the pups when the mother is replaced.  相似文献
