Balancing food production and biodiversity conservation is a global challenge today. Livestock grazing is one of the main activities triggering habitat degradation and land-use change around the world. Its effects on biodiversity have been widely explored, with birds being the most studied vertebrates. However, its impact seems to be contradictory given the disparity of the results. To understand the influence of livestock grazing on birds, we conducted a meta-analysis exploring the effects of several grazing characteristics on bird abundance and species richness. Our results showed that livestock grazing has a significant negative effect on bird abundance (mean effect size -0.422 ± 0.140), and species richness (mean effect size -0.391 ± 0.141). Livestock grazing affected negatively the bird abundance in riparian habitats in contrast to the other habitat types. Species richness was negatively affected by grazing in woody habitats and Afrotropical and Neotropical regions. Grazing by cattle was more detrimental for both bird richness and abundance than sheep grazing or a mixture of domestic livestock. Moreover, intermediate grazing intensity seems appropriate to maintain bird abundance and richness, as high grazing intensity dropped both bird abundance and species richness substantially, and low grazing intensity reduced bird species richness. This pattern supposes a non-linear effect of grazing intensity on birds. Therefore, the management of grazing intensity and type of livestock could help to reduce the negative effect on bird abundance and richness, as moderate grazing intensities and mix of livestock types appear to have a minor or null impact on bird abundance and richness. Future studies should explore in-depth the effect of moderate grazing intensities on bird diversity and composition to provide better management recommendations to enhance avian conservation in rangelands.  相似文献

When used in genetically modified herbicide-tolerant (GMHT) crops, glyphosate provides great flexibility to manipulate weed populations with consequences for invertebrates and higher trophic levels, for example birds. A range of timings of band and overall spray treatments of glyphosate to GMHT sugar beet were compared with a conventional weed control programme in four field trials over 2 years. Single overall sprays applied between 200 and 250 accumulated day degrees (above a base air temperature of 3 degrees C; degrees Cd) and band applied treatments applied at 10% or 20% ground cover within the crop rows generally gave significantly greater weed biomass and seed rain than conventional treatments, while later band sprays (more than 650 degrees Cd) reduced seed return. Two overall sprays of glyphosate produced low weed biomass and generally lowest seed return of all treatments but tended to give some of the highest yields. However, the early overall sprays (200-250 degrees Cd) and band sprays gave as good or better yields than the conventional and were generally equivalent to the two overall-spray programme. Viable seeds in the soil after the experiment were generally higher following the early overall (200-250 degrees Cd) and the band spray treatments than following the conventional. The results show that altered management of GMHT sugar beet can provide alternative scenarios to those of the recent Farm Scale Evaluation trials. Without yield loss they can enhance weed seed banks and autumn bird food availability compared with conventional management, or provide early season benefits to invertebrates and nesting birds, depending on the system chosen. Conventional weed control does not have the flexibility to enable these scenarios that benefit both agriculture and environment, although there may be some options for increasing weed seed return in autumn.  相似文献

The loss of seed-rich wintering habitats has been a major contributory cause of farmland bird population declines in western Europe. Agricultural grasslands are particularly poor winter foraging habitats for granivorous birds, which have declined most in the pastoral farming regions of western Britain. We describe an experiment to test the utility of fertile ryegrass (Lolium) swards as a potentially rich source of winter seed for declining farmland birds. Four patches of final-cut grass silage were allowed to set seed and were left in situ overwinter. Half of each patch was lightly aftermath grazed in an attempt to increase the accessibility of the seed to foraging birds and reduce the perceived predation risk. Large numbers of yellowhammers (Emberiza citrinella) and reed buntings (E. schoeniclus) foraged on the seeded plots throughout the winter. They preferred to forage on ungrazed seeded plots, where the accumulation of senescent foliage resulted in a 14% average loss in silage yield in the following season. However, seed produced on the plots also led to sward regeneration, increasing subsequent yields on some plots. The technique offers clear benefits as a potential future agri-environment measure for declining granivorous birds, with wide applicability, but requires further development to minimise sward damage and costs to the farmer. Autumn grazing should reduce sward damage, but at the cost of reduced usage by buntings. Using the technique just prior to reseeding would be one way of avoiding any costs of sward damage.  相似文献

The UK Farm Scale Evaluations (FSEs) have shown that the use of broad spectrum herbicides on genetically modified herbicide-tolerant (GMHT) crops can have dramatic effects on weed seed production compared to management of conventional varieties. Here, we use FSE data and information on bird diets to determine how GMHT cropping might change the food resources available to farmland birds. More than 60 fields of each of four crops, spring- and winter-sown oilseed rape, beet and maize, were split, one half being sown with a conventional variety, the other with a GMHT variety. Seed rain from weeds known to be important in the diets of 17 granivorous farmland bird species was measured under the two treatments. In beet and spring oilseed rape, rain of weed seeds important in the diets of 16 bird species was significantly reduced in GMHT compared to conventional halves; for no species did it increase. In winter oilseed rape, rain of weed seeds important in the diets of 10 species was significantly reduced in GMHT halves; for only one species did it increase significantly. By contrast, in maize, rain of weed seeds important in the diets of seven species was significantly greater in GMHT halves; for no species was it reduced. Treatment effects for the total weed seed energy available to each bird species were very similar to those for seed rain alone. Measuring the effects on individual bird species was outside the scope of this study. Despite this, these results suggest that should beet, spring and winter rape crops in the UK be largely replaced by GMHT varieties and managed as in the FSEs, this would markedly reduce important food resources for farmland birds, many of which declined during the last quarter of the twentieth century. By contrast, GMHT maize would be beneficial to farmland birds.  相似文献

A survey of aphids and virus diseases of sugar-beet root crops in eastern England was made between 1940 and 1948. Prior to 1943 the observations were made on fertilizer experiments; from 1943 onwards they were made on commercial fields selected for position in relation to beet and mangold seed crops. The incidence of beet yellows increased with increasing numbers of Myzus persicae , but not of Aphis fabae. The relation with M. persicae was sufficiently close to suggest that it is the most important, possibly the only important, vector of beet yellows virus. Beet mosaic virus also increased with increasing numbers of M. persicae , but the relation was not close enough to exclude the possibility of other vectors.
Numbers of A. fabae on sugar beet were slightly, but consistently, depressed by the use of salt as a fertilizer. Other fertilizers had variable effects. Neither aphids nor virus are likely to be greatly affected by fertilizers.
Beet yellows is most prevalent in areas where seed crops are grown, but within these areas nearness to individual seed crops did not appear to increase its incidence. M. persicae were more numerous on sugar beet in seed-crop areas than elsewhere, and this alone might account for the prevalence of yellows. Beet mosaic virus is more closely associated with seed crops than is beet yellows. It is most prevalent near to seed crops within the seed-crop areas.  相似文献

Grazing by large herbivores may negatively affect bird populations. This is of great conservation concern in areas with intensive sheep grazing. Sheep management varies substantially between regions, but no study has been performed in less intensively grazed systems. In a fully replicated, landscape scale experiment with three levels of sheep grazing, we tested whether the abundance and diversity of an assemblage of mountain birds were negatively affected by grazing or if grazing facilitated the bird assemblage. Density of birds was higher at high sheep density compared with low sheep density or no sheep by the fourth grazing season, while there was no clear effect on bird diversity. Thus, agricultural traditions and land use politics determining sheep density may change the density of avifauna in either positive or negative directions.  相似文献

Gene flow and introgression from cultivated plants may have important consequences for the conservation of wild plant populations. Cultivated beets (sugar beet, red beet and Swiss chard: Beta vulgaris ssp. vulgaris) are of particular concern because they are cross-compatible with the wild taxon, sea beet (B.vs. ssp. maritima). Cultivated beet seed production areas are sometimes adjacent to sea beet populations; the numbers of flowering individuals in the former typically outnumber those in the populations of the latter. In such situations, gene flow from cultivated beets has the potential to alter the genetic composition of the nearby wild populations. In this study we measured isozyme allele frequencies of 11 polymorphic loci in 26 accessions of cultivated beet, in 20 sea beet accessions growing near a cultivated beet seed production region in northeastern Italy, and 19 wild beet accessions growing far from seed production areas. We found one allele that is specific to sugar beet, relative to other cultivated types, and a second that has a much higher frequency in Swiss chard and red beet than in sugar beet. Both alleles are typically rare in sea beet populations that are distant from seed production areas, but both are common in those that are near the Italian cultivated beet seed production region, supporting the contention that gene flow from the crop to the wild species can be substantial when both grow in proximity. Interestingly, the introgressed populations have higher genetic diversity than those that are isolated from the crop. The crop-to-wild gene flow rates are unknown, as are the fitness consequences of such alleles in the wild. Thus, we are unable to assess the long-term impact of such introgression. However, it is clear that gene flow from a crop to a wild taxon does not necessarily result in a decrease in the genetic diversity of the native plant.  相似文献

Seed dispersal by animals is an important ecological process shaping plant regeneration. In general, seed dispersers are highly variable and often opportunistic in their fruit choice. Despite much research, the factors that can explain patterns of fruit consumption among different animal groups remain contentious. Here, we analysed the interactions between 81 animal species feeding on the fruits of 30 plant species in Kakamega Forest, Kenya, during 840 h of observations. Our aim was to determine whether plant characteristics, fruit morphology, fruit colours and/or fruit compounds such as water, sugar, phenols and tannins explained the relative importance of fruit consumption by the two most important consumer groups, primates and birds. We found significant differences in fruit choice between both groups. Primates fed on larger fruits and on higher trees that had larger fruit crops, whereas birds were observed feeding on smaller fruits and on smaller plants producing fewer fruits. Fruit colours did not differ between fruits consumed by primates and those consumed by birds. However, differences in the fruit choice among frugivorous birds were associated with differences in fruit colours. Smaller plants with smaller fruits produced red fruits which contrasted strongly with the background; these fruits were dispersed by a distinct set of bird species. The contents of water, sugar, phenols and tannins did not differ between fruits eaten by primates and those eaten by birds. Some phylogenetic patterns were apparent; primates fed preferentially on a phylogenetically restricted subsample of large plants with large fruits of the subclass Rosidae. We discuss why the observed primate dispersal syndrome is most likely explained by a process of ecological fitting.  相似文献

火把花(Colquhounia coccinea?)表现出典型的鸟媒综合征,因此具有作为引鸟景观植物的开发潜力。以自然、人工生境的火把花居群为研究对象,通过观察和试验对其开花物候、花部综合特征、访花动物及其行为、繁育系统、种子萌发特性进行研究,以明确火把花的繁殖特性及对不同访花动物的吸引潜力。结果显示,火把花的整体花期持续约3个月,单花花期为9.6±0.6 d;花蜜较丰富且稀薄,具有较短的花冠管和己糖为主的花蜜糖组成;访花动物主要是中华蜜蜂和多种食蜜鸟类,尤其是短喙的泛化鸟类,且在非自然生境中仍然能吸引鸟类访花;完全自交亲和但需要传粉者才能完成授粉,不存在花粉限制;不同授粉处理种子的发芽能力无显著差异;中华蜜蜂能有效传粉,鸟类的传粉作用需进一步验证。综上所述,火把花可供观赏的时间很长,具有明显的吸引鸟类访花的能力,容易通过有性繁殖途径快速获得大量幼苗。  相似文献

The nocturnal, cryptic and geographically remote nature of night parrots, combined with their apparent rapid decline, means that very little is known of their biology or ecology. The discovery of a resident population in south‐western Queensland in 2013 provides the first opportunity to undertake detailed studies on this most enigmatic of birds. We attached a radio tag to a bird for 20 days in April 2015 and a GPS tag to another bird for 5 days in May 2016 to study movement patterns and habitat use. Both birds displayed similar behaviour but the GPS‐tagging provided a much finer resolution of spatial data. They called at dusk from their diurnal roosts amongst spinifex hummocks and then flew to more floristically diverse habitats dominated by large‐seeded species to feed. We conducted floristic surveys to describe the feeding grounds of the GPS‐tagged bird and make dietary inferences. This individual spent most of its time in highly diverse but ephemeral habitats, including seasonally inundated plains and depressions associated with the outer Diamantina floodplain and gilgais on ironstone plains. Prolifically seeding ephemeral species, most notably the annual grass Uranthoecium truncatum, dominate these feeding grounds. This work suggests that the habitat mosaic containing roost sites in close proximity to feeding grounds with key seed‐producing species is an important factor, rather than an association with spinifex or samphire alone. Further work is needed to examine movement patterns and habitat use in more typical dry seasons and the impact of cattle grazing on night parrot feeding areas, particularly with regard to seed production. The information presented here is vital for both in situ conservation of the Pullen‐Pullen‐Mt Windsor‐Diamantina population and for setting future research and survey priorities.  相似文献

Declines of West European farmland birds have been associated with intensive agricultural practices, while in Central and Eastern European countries grasslands still harbour a diverse and unique bird community. However, in these countries comparative studies on the effects of agricultural intensity on biodiversity are virtually missing. We compared bird communities of paired extensively and intensively grazed cattle pastures in three different regions of the Hungarian Great Plain. The influence of grazing intensity, landscape and regional effects were tested on the abundance and species richness of two ecological groups of bird species (grassland and non-grassland birds), as well as on the abundance of the three commonest grassland bird species (Skylark, Yellow wagtail, Corn bunting) in linear mixed models. We found significant effects of grazing intensity on the abundance of grassland birds, which were more abundant on the extensive sites, whereas no effects were found on non-grassland birds. This could be explained by a closer dependence of grassland birds on grasslands for nesting and foraging, whereas non-grassland birds only used grasslands opportunistically for foraging. Landscape effect was shown on grassland bird abundance, but not on non-grassland birds. The regions did affect only the species richness of grassland birds. At species level, the effect of management was significant for the three commonest grassland species, which were more abundant on the extensive fields in all regions. Additionally, on Skylark abundance landscape and regional effects were also shown. These findings suggest that conservation of biodiversity in agricultural systems requires the consideration of landscape perspective to apply the most adequate management.  相似文献

Severe and irregular stunting of sugar beet has been associated with Helicotylenchus vulgaris but little is known of the pathogenicity of this nematode. A survey was made at 10 sites in East Anglia on calcareous soils (Wantage series) on which the original damage was reported. Numbers were usually maintained under a variety of crops, despite fluctuations during the period. In field trials, aldicarb treatment did not improve the yield of either sugar beet or winter wheat on land infested with H. vulgaris. In pot tests growth of sugar beet was stimulated by low nematode inocula; this effect diminished as numbers inoculated increased. Sugar beet grown at 10 °C and 15 °C with H. vulgaris grew markedly better in sterilised soil than in untreated field soil, especially at the higher temperature early in the experiment. It is concluded that though H. vulgaris may damage sugar beet it requires an atypical combination of external conditions to cause significant yield loss.  相似文献

Grasslands are one of the most endangered and degraded ecosystems globally. Switches in disturbance type can restore grassland function and improve conservation outcomes for fauna, but land-use legacies can limit the capacity of biota to respond positively to shifts in disturbance type, making it difficult to predict ecological outcomes. In semi-arid grasslands of South-Eastern Australia, habitat for grassland birds is managed using livestock grazing, a practice that has continued for >150 years. It is unknown if outcomes for birds can be improved by a switch in disturbance type as alternatives to livestock grazing have not been explored. We compare the effects of status-quo livestock grazing with alternative biomass management tools (no management, ‘crash’ grazing, planned fire) on birds, vegetation structure, and food resources using a BACI design across 3 years (2017–2019). We found crash grazing and fire produced more open, shorter grassy swards, with less exotic grass cover, compared to status-quo grazing or disturbance exclusion. Preferred habitat structure for the critically endangered plains-wanderer (Pedionomus torquatus) was maximized by status-quo grazing. Grassland birds responded in opposing ways to a disturbance switch. Brown songlarks (Megalurus cruralis) and Horsfield's bushlarks (Mirafra javanica) responded positively to disturbance exclusion, while stubble quail (Coturnix pectoralis) responded negatively to crash grazing. Australasian pipits (Anthus novaeseelandiae) were more frequent in response to status-quo grazing. Our findings suggest that multiple disturbance types should be used if the aim is to promote the spectrum of vegetation structures and food sources required to support a diverse grassland bird community in semi-arid grasslands of Australia.  相似文献

Abstract Grassland birds have declined more than any other North American habitat-associated bird community. Because most species of grassland birds evolved within heterogeneous landscapes created by the interaction of fire and grazing, traditional rangeland management that promotes homogeneity, including annual dormant-season burning combined with early-intensive grazing, might be partly responsible for these declines, especially in some regions of the Great Plains, USA. Recently, an alternative grassland management practice known as patch-burning has been promoted as a means of restoring heterogeneity to grasslands by mimicking the grazing-fire interaction that once occurred on the prairie before European settlement. From 2003 to 2004, we examined effects of patch-burning and traditional management (annual burning followed by early-intensive grazing) on the reproductive success of dickcissels (Spiza americana) in tallgrass prairie in Oklahoma. We monitored 296 dickcissel nests and found that dickcissel nesting phenology differed between traditional and patch-burned pastures. Specifically, dickcissels tended to initiate their nests later in the traditional pasture. Mean number of eggs laid and fledglings produced were similar between the treatments, but nest densities were higher in traditional pastures. Predation was the predominant cause of nest failure and was higher in traditional pastures than in patch-burned pastures. Brown-headed cowbird (Molothrus ater) parasitism was higher in traditional pastures than in patch-burned pastures. Overall, dickcissel nest success was higher in patch-burned pastures than in traditional pastures. The positive response of dickcissel nest success to patch-burn management provides further evidence that this practice can be a useful tool for grassland bird conservation. By creating a mosaic of different stature vegetation, patch-burn management enhances productivity of grassland bird species by providing a refuge area in the unburned patches that affords dickcissels and other nesting grassland birds some protection from the direct (e.g., trampling) and indirect (e.g., cowbird parasitism and predation) effects of grazing, which are not available under traditional management. Patch-burn management should be encouraged as a conservation strategy for grassland birds throughout the Great Plains.  相似文献

The effect of seed advancement on the early growth of sugar beet was determined in two experiments made under controlled conditions and eight field experiments made between 1974 and 1978. The experiments in the growth room suggested that seed advancement increased the rate of emergence and seedling dry weight over a wide range of soil moisture contents but seedling numbers were only greater under sub-optimal moisture conditions. Similarly, in most field experiments, seed advancement resulted in more rapid emergence and larger seedlings. In four field experiments, seed advancement gave up to 16% more plants, and in three experiments a significant increase in final sugar yield of up to 0–7 t h-1 was detected. The plants were hand-singled to a uniform stand and had the crops been drilled to a stand, some yield responses would have been larger. Seed advancement did not decrease the plant stand or final yield in any experiments. Results in 1977 and 1978 provided some evidence that seed advancement may help reduce the damage caused by field mice and the number of plants which bolt and, by making emergence more rapid, be particularly beneficial on soils prone to slumping or capping. There might, however, be a slightly increased risk of frost injury if advanced seed is used for early sowings.  相似文献

Seed priming (controlled imbibition) is a widely used technique for improving crop establishment, because it allows a reduction of the time to radicle emergence following seed imbibition and synchronization of individual seeds within seed lots with respect to germination timing. The major problem encountered in seed priming is the control of seed imbibition to a level permitting pre-germinative processes to proceed but that blocks radicle emergence. If not, the consequence of drying back the seeds to initial moisture content for storage purposes could be a total loss of the treated batch. This is because, as long as radicle growth has not begun, seeds may be re-dried without any permanent deleterious effects upon subsequent germination or growth. Recently, we reported the discovery of a molecular marker of sugar beet seed priming, corresponding to the basic B-subunit of the seed storage protein 11S globulin. An ELISA based upon this molecular marker has been used to analyse how different sugar beet seed lots respond to a priming treatment. The results demonstrate that this ELISA allows us to readily distinguish between the primed seeds and the corresponding untreated seeds.  相似文献

We assessed experimentally if the main granivorous bird species that feed on the ground in the central Monte desert are able to detect and consume seeds buried in the soil or trapped within litter. Understanding seed vulnerability to birds allows 1) a better understanding of how seed abundance translates into seed availability, a necessary step to assess seed limitation scenarios, and 2) whether birds alter the distribution of soil seeds through their consumption. Rufous‐collared sparrows found and consumed high proportions of buried seeds, though less seeds were eaten at increasing depths. In contrast, many‐colored chaco‐finches, common diuca‐finches and cinnamon warbling‐finches did not find buried seeds. All bird species fed on every substrate offered but, as a whole, birds reduced by 50% their seed consumption in Prosopis litter, and by 30% in Larrea litter, compared to consumption in bare soil. This effect was less notable for rufous‐collared sparrows, whose ‘double scratch’ foraging method would contribute to its great diet breath and abundance in the Monte desert. As birds do not reach a fraction of seeds buried and trapped by litter, seeds readily available for them may be scarcer than previously estimated through soil seed bank studies. Furthermore, since the four bird species detect and consume seeds from littered microhabitats, seed consumption by them surely affects the seasonal dynamics of the soil seed bank in all microhabitat types of the Monte desert.  相似文献

The emergence of sugar beet seedlings is often slow or irregular and insufficient plants may be established for the crop to yield fully. Treating the seed prior to sowing, such that the subsequent germination percentage is not reduced but germination is more rapid and better synchronised should be beneficial. A series of laboratory experiments was made to investigate seed treatment procedures involving water and various inorganic salt solutions. Many treatment combinations were identified which gave faster germination without decreasing germination percentage and left the seed dry and intact and suitable for sowing with conventional precision drills. No treatment was found which ‘primed’ the sugar beet seed and the term seed ‘advancement’ describes, more accurately, the effects observed. There was little difference in the performance of seeds optimally treated with water or some salt solutions generating an osmotic potential of between about –10 and –20 bars. However, the use of salt solutions, although more complicated, was preferred to water as inadvertent germination during treatment was less likely. The optimum treatment for the one bulk of sugar beet seed studied was, firstly, to wash the seeds for 3.5 h with water, then after air-drying, to moisten them on filter paper dampened with –15 bar (0–34 M) sodium chloride solution for 6 days at 15oC followed by a final wash and air-drying.  相似文献

Microbial population dynamics on seeds during drum and steeping priming   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
In the UK, seeds are primed commercially via drum or steeping priming processes to improve seed germination and seedling establishment but the microbial population dynamics occurring during these processes are unknown. Consequently, changes in culturable bacterial and fungal populations that occurred during laboratory and commercial scale drum priming of carrot, leek and parsnip seed and during laboratory scale and commercial scale steeping priming of carrot and sugar beet seed were investigated. Populations of bacteria and pseudomonads increased by 2 and 4 log10 cfu g–1 seed during priming to reach between 7 and 10 log10 cfu g–1 seed with less than 1 log10 cfu g–1 seed decrease after redrying, irrespective of seed type or priming process. Pseudomonads represented approximately 10% of the culturable bacterial population. Fungal populations also increased by between 1 and 3 log10 cfu g–1 seed during priming of carrot, leek and parsnip seed and were little affected by redrying. Addition of a tefluthrin coating (a standard commercial insecticide treatment) during the drying stage of commercial scale drum priming had little effect on microbial populations. During steeping priming, populations of bacteria and pseudomonads on sugar beet also increased by 2 and 4 log10 cfu g–1 seed with less than 1 log10 cfu g–1 seed decrease after redrying. However, fungi did not increase in the same manner on sugar beet, suggesting that the sugar beet seed itself may have an inhibitory effect on fungal growth. The presence of thiram in the steeping liquid (a standard commercial fungicide treatment) inhibited fungal proliferation on carrot and sugar beet seed. Spore forming bacteria generally occurred at low levels on all seeds (between 2 and 5 log10 cfu g–1seed) and did not exhibit any characteristic population changes during priming or redrying. Clearly some culturable populations of microorganisms can increase reproducibly during these priming processes and survive the redrying procedure, thereby demonstrating the potential for a novel method of introducing microbial inoculants onto seed.  相似文献
