Effects of polyploidy on photosynthesis   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
In polyploid plants the photosynthetic rate per cell is correlated with the amount of DNA per cell. The photosynthetic rate per unit leaf area is the product of the rate per cell times the number of photosynthetic cells per unit area. Therefore, the photosynthetic rate per unit leaf area will increase if there is a less than proportional increase in cell volume at higher ploidal levels, or if cell packing is altered to allow more cells per unit leaf area. In autopolyploids (Medicago sativa, C3 species, and Pennisetum americanum, C4 species) there is a doubling of photosynthesis per cell and of cell volume in the tetraploid compared to the diploid. However, there is a proportional decrease in number of cells per unit leaf area with this increase in ploidy such that the rate of photosynthesis per leaf area does not change. There is more diversity in the relationship between ploidal level (gene dosage) and photosynthetic rates per unit leaf area in allopolyploids. This is likely to reflect the effects of natural selection on leaf anatomy, and novel genetic interactions from contributed genomes which can occur with allopolyploidy. In allopolyploid wheat (C3 species) a higher cell volume per unit DNA at the higher ploidal level is negatively correlated with photosynthesis rate per unit leaf area. Although photosynthesis per cell increases with ploidy, photosynthesis per leaf area decreases, being lowest in the allohexaploid, cultivated bread wheat (Triticum aestivum). Alternatively, doubling of photosynthetic rate per cell with doubling of DNA, with apparent natural selection for decreased cell volume per unit DNA, results in higher rates of photosynthesis per leaf area in octaploid compared to tetraploid Panicum virgatum (C4) which may be a case of allopolyploidy. Similar responses probably occur in Festuca arundinacea. Therefore, in some systems anatomical factors affecting photosynthesis are also affected by ploidal level. It is important to evaluate that component as well as determining the effect on biochemical processes. Current information on polyploidy and photosynthesis in several species is discussed with respect to anatomy, biochemistry and bases for expressing photosynthetic rates.Abbreviations Chl chlorophyll - RuBPC ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase  相似文献

The photosynthesis of ryegrass leaves grown in a simulated sward   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Plants were taken from simulated swards of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) grown in a controlled environment and the rates of photosynthesis of the youngest fully expanded leaves, and the second and third youngest leaves on the same tillers were measured. The youngest leaves had the highest rates and the third the lowest, with the second leaves intermediate. The rate of photosynthesis in bright light of successive youngest expanded leaves decreased as the swards increased in leaf area, but did not when plants were grown so that the main stem was not shaded. When plants were grown at different densities and the photosynthetic rates of leaves of a particular ontogenetic rank were measured, it was found that leaves on plants from higher densities had lower rates of photosynthesis. Also leaves on plants grown in bright light had higher photosynthetic rates than those on plants grown in dim light. It is concluded that the decline in the photosynthetic capacity of successive leaves in a rapidly growing simulated sward is due to the intense shading to which they are subjected during their expansion.  相似文献

The hypothesis we propose is that during photosynthesis the balance between potentially detrimental and beneficial photochemically induced events can be tipped beneficially toward increased photosynthesis and toward increased crop yield. To test this hypothesis a procedure has been devised with the rice plant, Oryza sativa, that has resulted in increasing both canopy photosynthesis and rice grain yield. Two elite rice varieties selected independently in the contrasting environments of either South China or Texas, each with distinct photosynthetic traits, were crossed to produce a hybrid with an increased canopy photosynthesis and grain yield that is regularly 20 to 22% higher than the mid-yields of the parents. The photosynthetic and mechanisms which may contribute to these beneficial results in the hybrid rice are: a reduction of the midday depression of photosynthesis; a rapid development of the canopy for photosynthetic light interception and an increased canopy photosynthesis; increased amounts of carotenoids for the xanthophyll cycle; an increased protection against free radicals induced by paraquat treatment; a 6 to 12 day shorter plant reproductive life cycle; and a 8 to 10 day increase in the longevity of the flag leaf over the parents. While the hybrid rice has successfully integrated these and likely other unknown characteristics to increase both crop photosynthesis and grain yield, we propose that understanding the underlying beneficial photosynthetic mechanisms supporting these crop plant traits is worthy of thorough investigation and application in crop production.Dedicated to the memory of Professor D.I. Arnon who enriched and challenged the study of photosynthesis through a series of discoveries over 4 decades and via his force of personality.  相似文献

Plant communities utilize available irradiance with different efficiency depending not only on their photosynthetic characteristics but also on the canopy structure and density. The importance of canopy structure are well studied in terrestrial plant communities but poorly studied in aquatic plant communities. The objective of this study was to evaluate macroalgal community photosynthesis in artificial constructed communities of one to four species with different morphologies along a range of leaf (i.e.=thallus) area densities. In a laboratory set-up we measured net photosynthesis and dark respiration in constructed assemblages of macroalgae, excluding effects other than photosynthesis of individual tissue and distribution of photons in the canopy from influencing metabolism. We hypothezised that 1) canopy structure determines the actual rates of photosynthesis relative to the optimal rates and 2) multi-species communities attain higher maximum photosynthetic rates than single species communities. We found that differences in canopy structure outweighed large differences in tissue photosynthesis resulting in relatively similar maximum community photosynthetic rates among the different single and multi-species assemblages (20.1–40.5 μmol O2 m−2 s−1). Canopy structure influenced community photosynthesis both at low and high leaf area densities because it determines the ability of macroalgae to use the photosynthetic potential of their individual tissues. Due to an averaging effect the photosynthetic rate at high leaf area density was more similar among multi-species community than among single-species communities. Multi-species communities had, on average, a slightly higher photosynthetic production than expected from photosynthesis of single species communities. Moreover multi-species communities were capable of exposing new tissue to irradiance up to high densities thereby avoiding a decrease in net photosynthesis. This finding suggests that multi-species communities may be able to maintain higher biomass per unit ground area than single-species communities.  相似文献

The most productive C4 food and biofuel crops, such as Saccharum officinarum (sugarcane), Sorghum bicolor (sorghum) and Zea mays (maize), all use NADP-ME-type C4 photosynthesis. Despite high productivities, these crops fall well short of the theoretical maximum solar conversion efficiency of 6%. Understanding the basis of these inefficiencies is key for bioengineering and breeding strategies to increase the sustainable productivity of these major C4 crops. Photosynthesis is studied predominantly at steady state in saturating light. In field stands of these crops light is continually changing, and often with rapid fluctuations. Although light may change in a second, the adjustment of photosynthesis may take many minutes, leading to inefficiencies. We measured the rates of CO2 uptake and stomatal conductance of maize, sorghum and sugarcane under fluctuating light regimes. The gas exchange results were combined with a new dynamic photosynthesis model to infer the limiting factors under non-steady-state conditions. The dynamic photosynthesis model was developed from an existing C4 metabolic model for maize and extended to include: (i) post-translational regulation of key photosynthetic enzymes and their temperature responses; (ii) dynamic stomatal conductance; and (iii) leaf energy balance. Testing the model outputs against measured rates of leaf CO2 uptake and stomatal conductance in the three C4 crops indicated that Rubisco activase, the pyruvate phosphate dikinase regulatory protein and stomatal conductance are the major limitations to the efficiency of NADP-ME-type C4 photosynthesis during dark-to-high light transitions. We propose that the level of influence of these limiting factors make them targets for bioengineering the improved photosynthetic efficiency of these key crops.  相似文献

Summary The occurrence of compensatory photosynthesis was examined in the field for all foliage elements on two Agropyron bunchgrass species that differ in their evolutionary history of grazing pressure. This is the first reported field study of compensatory photosynthesis in individual foliage elements of graminoids. Compensatory photosynthesis was defined as an increase in the photosynthetic rates of foliage on partially defoliated plants relative to foliage of the same age on undefoliated plants. Compensatory photosynthesis did occur in many individual foliage elements during at least part of their ontogeny. For both species, compensatory photosynthesis was related primarily to delayed leaf senescence and increased soluble protein concentrations, but not to an improvement in the water status of clipped plants. Soluble protein concentration increased in all foliage elements. A delay in senescence on clipped plants was documented for the two oldest, fully-expanded leaves that were present when the plants were initially clipped, but the initiation and senescence of all other foliage elements were not affected by the clipping treatments. Photosynthetic water use efficiency and photosynthetic rates per unit soluble protein of foliage on partially defoliated plants were not increased following the clipping treatments. Although A. desertorum and A. spicatum were exposed to different levels of grazing pressure during their evolutionary history, the phenology, water status, and gas exchange rates of foliage were very similar both for undefoliated as well as partially defoliated plants. Thus, we conclude that compensatory photosynthesis does not appear to be an important ecological component of herbivory tolerance for these species.  相似文献

The spatial heterogeneity of photosynthesis and calcification of single polyps of the coral Galaxea fascicularis was investigated. Photosynthesis was investigated with oxygen microsensors. The highest rates of gross photosynthesis (Pg) were found on the tissue covering the septa, the tentacles, and the tissues surrounding the mouth opening of the polyp. Lower rates were found on the tissues of the wall and the coenosarc. Calcification was investigated by radioactive tracers. The incorporation pattern of 45Ca and 14C in the corallites was imaged with use of a Micro-Imager. The -images obtained showed that the incorporation of the radioactive tracers coincided with the Pg distribution pattern with the highest incorporation rates found in the corallite septa. Thus, the high growth rate of the septa is supported by the high rates of Pg by the symbiont in the adjacent tissues. The total incorporation rates were higher in light than in dark, however, the distribution pattern of the radioisotope incorporation was not affected by illumination. This further emphasizes the close relation between calcification and photosynthesis.  相似文献

The triose phosphate utilization (TPU) rate has been identified as one of the processes that can limit terrestrial plant photosynthesis. However, we lack a robust quantitative assessment of TPU limitation of photosynthesis at the global scale. As a result, TPU, and its potential limitation of photosynthesis, is poorly represented in terrestrial biosphere models (TBMs). In this study, we utilized a global data set of photosynthetic CO2 response curves representing 141 species from tropical rainforests to Arctic tundra. We quantified TPU by fitting the standard biochemical model of C3 photosynthesis to measured photosynthetic CO2 response curves and characterized its instantaneous temperature response. Our results demonstrate that TPU does not limit leaf photosynthesis at the current ambient atmospheric CO2 concentration. Furthermore, our results showed that the light‐saturated photosynthetic rates of plants growing in cold environments are not more often limited by TPU than those of plants growing in warmer environments. In addition, our study showed that the instantaneous temperature response of TPU is distinct from temperature response of the maximum rate of Rubisco carboxylation. The new formulations of the temperature response of TPU derived in this study may prove useful in quantifying the biochemical limits to terrestrial plant photosynthesis and improve the representation of plant photosynthesis in TBMs.  相似文献

The temperature influence on carbon stable isotope discrimination (Δ) in photosynthesis by algae has not been studied taking into account the confounding effect due to photosynthetic rates. This is problematic because usually higher temperatures imply higher photosynthetic rates, and higher photosynthetic rates usually lead to a decrease in Δ. Here, we investigate the effect of temperature on Δ during photosynthesis by Undaria pinnatifida (Harv.) Suringar (Phaeophyta) in a closed system, varying temperatures between 5°C and 20°C and measuring photosynthetic rates simultaneously. There was a general trend of higher Δ for higher temperatures under the same photosynthetic rate, especially for higher photosynthetic rates. These results were consistent with the influence of phenomena related to carbon supply to the plant, like CO2 diffusion in water and through cell membranes. This influence, however, was less strong than that of photosynthetic rates on Δ (lower Δ for higher photosynthetic rates) and can be difficult to observe in nature.  相似文献

Differences in reproductive demands between the sexes of dioecious plants could cause divergence in physiology between the sexes. We found that the reproductive effort of female Silene latifolia plants increased to more than twice that of male plants or female plants that were prevented from setting fruit by lack of pollination after 4 weeks of flowering. Whole-plant source/sink ratios of pollinated females were significantly lower than those of males or unpollinated females because of investment in fruit. We hypothesized that these differences in source/sink ratio between the sexes and within females, depending on pollination, would lead to differences in leaf photosynthetic rates. Within females, we found that photosynthetic capacity was consistent with measurement of whole-plant source/sink ratio. Females that were setting fruit had 30% higher light-saturated photosynthetic rates by 28 days after flowering than females that were not setting fruit. Males, however, had consistently higher photosynthetic rates than females from 10 days after flowering onwards. Males also had approximately twice the dark respiration rates of fruiting females. We found that female reproductive structures are longer-lived and contribute more carbon to their own support than male reproductive structures. Despite the higher rates of leaf dark respiration and lower calyx photosynthetic rates, males fix more carbon than do females. We conclude that females have a sink-regulated mechanism of photosynthesis that allows them to respond to variations in fruit set. This mechanism is not, however, sufficient to explain why male S. latifolia plants have higher rates of photosynthesis, higher source/sink ratios, and lower reproductive allocation, but fail to grow larger than female plants.  相似文献

Most mistletoe–host ecophysiological studies have paid attention to the influence of parasites on host performance. This paper explored the impact of varying hosts on the photosynthesis of a single mistletoe species. Here, we studied an obligate xylem‐tapping tropical mistletoe (Dendrophthoe curvata (Blume) Miquel) parasitizing four different hosts (Acacia auriculiformis A. Cunn. Ex Benth, Andira inermis (W. Wright) DC., Mangifera indica L. and Vitex pinnata L.) in a homo geneous tropical heath forest patch in Brunei Darussalam. We compared photosynthetic capacity and photosynthesis‐related characteristics of the mistletoe on four different hosts to evaluate the overall impact of hosts on the parasite. Results showed that the mistletoe–host patterns of CO2 assimilation rates, transpiration rates and water use efficiency varied significantly based on the host. In the D. curvata–Vitex pinnata association, the mistletoe exhibited significantly lower CO2 assimilation rates but showed no significant variations in transpiration rates and water use efficiency when compared to the host. In D. curvata–Andira inermis and D. curvata–Mangifera indica associations, the mistletoe showed significantly higher photosynthetic rates than the hosts, whereas in the D. curvata–Acacia auriculiformis association, there was no significant difference in photosynthetic rates between the counterparts. Host specificity also significantly influenced some mistletoe photosynthetic parameters such as light saturated photosynthesis, specific leaf area, leaf chlorophyll content, CO2 assimilation rates, stomatal conductance, transpiration rates and water use efficiency. Different tree hosts intrinsically offer different resources to their obligate mistletoe parasites based on their physiology and environmental parameters. We argue that host‐specific responses have driven these intra‐specific variations in mistletoe physiology. This study provides background for future investigation on potential host‐regulated mechanisms that drive functional changes in host‐dependent mistletoes.  相似文献

The husk surrounding the ear of corn/maize (Zea mays) has widely spaced veins with a number of interveinal mesophyll (M) cells and has been described as operating a partial C(3) photosynthetic pathway, in contrast to its leaves, which use the C(4) photosynthetic pathway. Here, we characterized photosynthesis in maize husk and leaf by measuring combined gas exchange and carbon isotope discrimination, the oxygen dependence of the CO(2) compensation point, and photosynthetic enzyme activity and localization together with anatomy. The CO(2) assimilation rate in the husk was less than that in the leaves and did not saturate at high CO(2), indicating CO(2) diffusion limitations. However, maximal photosynthetic rates were similar between the leaf and husk when expressed on a chlorophyll basis. The CO(2) compensation points of the husk were high compared with the leaf but did not vary with oxygen concentration. This and the low carbon isotope discrimination measured concurrently with gas exchange in the husk and leaf suggested C(4)-like photosynthesis in the husk. However, both Rubisco activity and the ratio of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase to Rubisco activity were reduced in the husk. Immunolocalization studies showed that phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase is specifically localized in the layer of M cells surrounding the bundle sheath cells, while Rubisco and glycine decarboxylase were enriched in bundle sheath cells but also present in M cells. We conclude that maize husk operates C(4) photosynthesis dispersed around the widely spaced veins (analogous to leaves) in a diffusion-limited manner due to low M surface area exposed to intercellular air space, with the functional role of Rubisco and glycine decarboxylase in distant M yet to be explained.  相似文献

The impact of herbivores on host plant photosynthetic rates can range from negative to positive. While defoliation by chewing herbivores can result in increases in photosynthesis followed by compensatory growth, other herbivore guilds, such as mesophyll feeders which damage photosynthetic leaf tissues, almost always reduce photosynthetic rates. The impact of galling herbivores on host photosynthesis has rarely been examined, even though the limited tissue disruption and the strong metabolic sinks induced by gall-forming herbivores could potentially stimulate photosynthetic rates. I examined the hypothesis that gall-inducing herbivores could stimulate photosynthesis in neighboring leaves in response to increased sink-demand by the gall. To address this hypothesis, I measured photosynthetic rates of galled leaves or leaflets, neighboring ungalled leaves or leaflets, and ungalled leaves or leaflets on ungalled shoots on naturally growing Prunus serotina (wild cherry) and Rhus glabra (smooth sumac). The leaves of wild cherry were galled by an eriophyid mite, Phytoptus cerasicrumena; the leaves of smooth sumac by an aphid, Melaphis rhois. I found that both species reduced the photosynthetic rates of the leaves or leaflets they galled from 24 to 52% compared to ungalled leaves in ungalled areas of the plants. Contrary to my hypothesis, mite galls on wild cherry reduced photosynthesis of neighboring ungalled leaves within the same shoot by 24% compared to ungalled leaves on gall-free shoots. Aphid galls on sumac leaflets did not significantly alter the photosynthetic rates of neighboring leaflets relative to ungalled leaves on ungalled shoots. Although gall-formers would appear to have the potential to stimulate photosynthesis in the same manner as defoliating herbivores, i.e., by increasing sink demand relative to source supply, I found only negative impacts on photosynthesis. I suggest that sink competition for nutrients between developing leaves and growing gall tissue may account for the negative impacts of sink-inducing gallers on photosynthesis. Summary Plants of the salt marsh grass Spartina alterniflora Loisel were collected from North Carolina and grown under controlled nutrient, temperature, and photoperiod conditions. Plants were grown at two different illumination levels; substrate salinity was varied, and leaf photosynthesis, transpiration, total chlorophyll, leaf xylem pressure, and specific leaf weight were measured. Conditions were controlled so that gaseous and liquid phase resistances to CO2 diffusion could be calculated. Growth at low illumination and high salinity (30 ppt) resulted in a 50% reduction in photosynthesis. The reduction in photosynthesis of plants grown at low illumination was correlated with an increase in gaseous resistance. Photosynthetic rates of plants grown at high salinity and high illumination were reduced only slightly compared to rates of plants grown, in 10 ppt and Hoagland's solution. Both high salinity and high illumination were correlated with increases in specific leaf weight. Chlorophyll data indicate that specific leaf weight differences were the result of increases in leaf thickness. It is therefore hypothesized that photosynthetic response can be strongly influenced by salinity-induced changes in leaf structure. Similarities in photosynthetic rate on an area basis at high, illumination were apparently the result, of increases in leaf thickness at high salinity. Photosynthetic rates were generally quite high, even at salinities close to open ocean water, and it is concluded that salinity rarely limits photosynthesis in S. alterniflora.  相似文献

Most models for canopy photosynthesis require a large number of parameters as input which have to be determined by means of direct measurements. Such measurements are usually expensive, time consuming and destructive. The objective of the present study was, therefore, to develop a simple but accurate canopy photosynthesis model based on a minimum number of parameters that can be determined non-destructively. The results from previous studies were used to derive an empirical expression which describes the variation in leaf photosynthetic capacity (Pm) as a function of the light distribution in the canopy. The light distribution itself was calculated with a simple model which assumes only three leaf angle classes (0–30°, 30–60° and 60–90°). The leaf area index was determined indirectly from measurements of direct radiation below the canopy. The result was a model for canopy photosynthesis that requires only a few parameters. These parameters are the leaf photosynthetic capacity at the top of the canopy, the relative frequency of leaves in each of the three leaf angle classes, and the fraction of direct radiation below the canopy. Each of these parameters can be determined by means of simple non-destructive measurements. The model was applied to dense stands of two monocotyledonous species: rice (Oryza sativa L.) and pearl millet (Pennisetum americanum (L.) K. Schum.). The rates of canopy photosynthesis thus calculated were compared to those obtained with a more elaborate reference model. The differences between the values obtained with the two models were small. The present photosynthesis model can, therefore, be considered to be a suitable alternative for the more elaborate model. It was further discussed that, since the model is based on purely non-destructive measurements, it will be particularly useful in cases where it is required to estimate canopy photosynthesis at regular intervals over a length of time or in stands of vegetation that cover large areas of land.  相似文献

Summary The gas exchange characteristics of photosynthetic tissues of leaves and stems of Eriogonum inflatum are described. Inflated stems were found to contain extraordinarily high internal CO2 concentrations (to 14000 bar), but fixation of this internal CO2 was 6–10 times slower than fixation of atmospheric CO2 by these stems. Although the pool of CO2 is a trivial source of CO2 for stem photosynthesis, it may result in higher water-use efficiency of stem tissues. Leaf and stem photosynthetic activities were compared by means of CO2 fixation in CO2 response curves, light and temperature response curves in IRGA systems, and by means of O2 exchange at CO2 saturation in a leaf disc O2 electrode system. On an area basis leaves contain about twice the chlorophyll and nitrogen as stems, and are capable of up to 4-times the absolute CO2 and O2 exchange rates. However, the stem shape is such that lighting of the shaded side leads to a substantial increase in overall stem photosynthesis on a projected area basis, to about half the leaf rate in air. Stem conductance is lower than leaf conductance under most conditions and is less sensitive to high temperature or high VPD. Under most conditions, the ratio C i /C a is lower in stems than in leaves and stems show greater water-use efficiency (higher ratio assimilation/transpiration) as a function of VPD. This potential advantage of stem photosynthesis in a water limited environment may be offset by the higher VPD conditions in the hotter, drier part of the year when stems are active after leaves have senesced. Stem and leaf photosynthesis were similarly affected by decreasing plant water potential.  相似文献

Although photosynthesis is the most important source for biomass and grain yield, a lack of correlation between photosynthesis and plant yield among different genotypes of various crop species has been frequently observed. Such observations contribute to the ongoing debate whether enhancing leaf photosynthesis can improve yield potential. Here, transgenic rice plants that contain variable amounts of the Rieske FeS protein in the cytochrome (cyt) b6/f complex between 10 and 100% of wild‐type levels have been used to investigate the effect of reductions of these proteins on photosynthesis, plant growth and yield. Reductions of the cyt b6/f complex did not affect the electron transport rates through photosystem I but decreased electron transport rates through photosystem II, leading to concomitant decreases in CO2 assimilation rates. There was a strong control of plant growth and grain yield by the rate of leaf photosynthesis, leading to the conclusion that enhancing photosynthesis at the single‐leaf level would be a useful target for improving crop productivity and yield both via conventional breeding and biotechnology. The data here also suggest that changing photosynthetic electron transport rates via manipulation of the cyt b6/f complex could be a potential target for enhancing photosynthetic capacity in higher plants.  相似文献

Role of seagrass photosynthesis in root aerobic processes   总被引:13,自引:3,他引:10       下载免费PDF全文
The role of shoot photosynthesis as a means of supporting aerobic respiration in the roots of the seagrass Zostera marina was examined. O2 was transported rapidly (10-15 minutes) from the shoots to the root-rhizome tissues upon shoot illumination. The highest rates of transport were in shoots possessing the greatest biomass and leaf area. The rates of O2 transport do not support a simple gas phase diffusion mechanism. O2 transport to the root-rhizome system supported aerobic root respiration and in many cases exceeded respiratory requirements leading to O2 release from the subterranean tissue. Release of O2 can support aerobic processes in reducing sediments typical of Z. marina habitats. Since the root-rhizome respiration is supported primarily under shoot photosynthetic conditions, then the daily period of photosynthesis determines the diurnal period of root aerobiosis.  相似文献
