Alpine, Angora and Nubian kids, 6–8 months old and weighing 15–25 kg were grazed on high quality (wheat) or low quality pasture (dormant bermudagrass) for 54 d to evaluate breed differences and metabolic responses. Each kid on the bermudagrass pasture also received daily 200 g of a 24% CP supplement to stimulate intake.

Wheat pasture had an in vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMD) of 78 vs. 35% for the Bermuda pasture. Goats gained 50 g/d on wheat pasture vs. 10 g/d on Bermuda pasture (P<0.02). Angora kids gained the least weight on Bermuda (−8 g/d; P<0.05) and most on wheat pasture (62 g/d; P<0.05). Mohair production was greater for Angora goats on wheat pasture compared to those on Bermuda pastures (9.9 vs. 6.2 g/100 cm2; P<0.05). Angora goats on Bermuda pastures had elevated levels of NEFA and plasma ammonia, and reduced levels of plasma urea N, consistent with catabolism of body tissue stores. Angora goats tended to have lower concentration of rumen VFA and ammonia. Angora goats appear to be more sensitive to inanition as compared to Alpine and Nubian goats. Presumably, their obligate nutrient requirements for hair production limits their ability to adapt, making them more vulnerable to nutritional stress.  相似文献

Six Alpine (AL; 38.4 ± 3.0 kg), Angora (AN; 23.1 ± 2.7 kg), Boer (BO; 40.8 ± 4.5 kg) and Spanish (SP; 33.6 ± 2.2 kg) wethers (1.5 yr of age) were used to determine the effects of time of the day and potential interactions between time, genotype and diet quality on energy expenditure (EE), heart rate (HR) and EE:HR when fed near maintenance and fasting. The experiment consisted of four simultaneous crossovers, with 21 d for adaptation before measures. Diets were 60% concentrate (CON: 15% CP) and ground alfalfa hay (FOR: 23% CP), offered in two meals at 8:00 and 16:00 h. Energy expenditure was determined from O2 consumption and production of CO2 and CH4 over 2-day periods in fed and fasting states (total 4-day fasting period). Fasting EE was higher during the day than night, with values generally highest at 16:00–17:00 h. Animal within breed affected EE, HR and EE:HR (P < 0.05). The diurnal pattern in EE varied with diet (P < 0.05), although total daily EE was not different between diets. Before the morning meal, there were a number of hours during which EE was greater for CON than for FOR. However, at both meals the rise in EE was considerably greater for FOR versus CON, lasting for 3–4 h. The same general pattern in HR was observed, although the period of time when there was a dietary difference after the afternoon meal was shorter. For both fed and fasted goats, EE:HR differed among hours of the day (P < 0.05). EE:HR tended (P < 0.09) to differ between diets (5.99 and 6.21 for CON and FOR, respectively) and to be affected (P < 0.09) by an interaction between breed and diet (AL: 5.84 and 6.38; AN: 5.91 and 5.73; BO: 6.05 and 6.58; and SP: 6.17 and 6.15 kJ/(kg BW0.75 × day):heart beats/min) for CON and FOR, respectively. In conclusion, for use of HR to predict EE by goats, it appears desirable to determine the ratio of EE:HR with a diet similar to that consumed during prediction and over an extended period of time.  相似文献

Twenty-one pregnant ewe lambs (nine superovulated and 12 non-superovulated) were used to study the effects of superovulation (injecting 700 IU PMSG at the end of diestrus) on maternal serum progesterone concentrations, uterine and fetal weights at weeks 7 and 15 of pregnancy. In the ewes sacrificed at week 7 of pregnancy, superovulation increased the mean number of corpora lutea (P<0.01), fetuses (P<0.01), maternal mean serum progesterone concentration (P<0.01), mean uterine weight (P<0.05), total fetal weight (P<0.01), and average fetal weight (P<0.01) by 133%, 69%, 354%, 66%, 150% and 40%, respectively, when compared to non-superovulated ewes. In the ewes sacrificed at week 15 of pregnancy, superovulation increased the number of corpora lutea (P<0.01), fetuses (P<0.05), maternal serum progesterone concentration (P<0.01), uterine weight (P<0.05), total fetal weight (P>0.05), and average fetal weight (P<0.05) by 207%, 20%, 84%, 37%, 29% and 24%, respectively, compared to those non-superovulated ewes. It was concluded that the increased number of corpora lutea and, therefore, their hormonal secretions by superovulation could increase uterine and fetal growth and development.  相似文献

Seven purebred Toggenburg fetuses in four does, six purebred Nubian fetuses in four does, and eight Angora fetuses in six does were repeatedly measured using transabdominal real-time ultrasound with a 5 MH(z) linear-array transducer from 40 d to 100 d gestational age (GA) and their biparietal diameters (BPD) were determined. For Toggenburg goats the GA = 27.9 + 1.64 BPD; for Nubian goats the GA = 26.8 + 1.74 BPD; for Angora goats the GA = 28.6 + 1.77 BPD. The breed differences in GA for equal BPD are insignificant at the beginning of the second trimester but are +3 d for Nubian and +6 d for Angora fetuses by the end of the second trimester.  相似文献

The in vitro digestibility of two-stage dried olive cake (TSDOC) and olive leaves (OL) unsupplemented or supplemented with increasing amounts of urea (U) or sunflower meal (SM) (0, 1.5, 2 and 2.5 g/100 g organic matter (OM) of the by-product) was determined. Chemical and amino acid composition, in vitro digestibility, in situ rumen degradability of crude protein and amino acids, and in situ–in vitro intestinal digestibility of SM CP and amino acids was determined. The in sacco rumen degradability and in vitro intestinal availability of CP and individual amino acids were also determined. Results obtained in Granadina goats and Segureña wethers were compared. SM provides arginine, glycine and aspartic and glutamic acids. The addition of increasing amounts of U or SM improved (P<0.001) the IVDMD and IVOMD of both TSDOC and OL. There was no effect (P>0.05) of the rumen inoculum origin on in vitro TSDOC digestibility. In contrast, values for OL were higher (P<0.001) for goats versus sheep. In sacco ruminal CP degradability of SM was relatively high, and similar in sheep and goats (ED=0.78 and 0.75 for sheep and goats). Individual amino acid ruminal degradability had different values, being lowest for methionine, leucine, proline, tyrosine and cysteine. Values obtained for individual amino acids differed from those of CP. Apparent intestinal digestibility of undegraded protein (AIDUP) of SM was high (0.86 and 0.98, respectively, for sheep and goats). The intestinally absorbable protein (IADP) was low (18.9 and 24.0 for sheep and goats, respectively). Results indicate that goats and sheep have the same capacity for TSDOC digestion, but goats showed a better capacity than sheep for OL utilisation. Although the amino acids supply to the intestine from SM is not important it could be a good supplement for low degradable protein feedstuffs such as TSDOC and OL.  相似文献

Parthenogenesis of rabbit oocytes activated by different stimuli   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
Oocyte activation is one of the essential elements determining the success of nuclear transfer and the subsequent development of cloned embryos both in vitro and in vivo. Experiments were conducted to optimize the protocol for oocyte activation in a regular nuclear transfer study. In vivo derived oocytes were collected at 14–15 h from New Zealand white rabbits after ovulation treatment and were activated +18 h post-ovulation treatment. Single activation agents including calcium ionophore (A23187, 5 μM, 5 min), ethanol (Eth, 7%, 7 min), and thimerosal (200 μM, 10 min) were tested. Cleavage rates were highest in the ethanol-treated group (37%) compared to other treatments (19–25%). Very low blastocyst rates (2–3%) resulted which were not significantly different among treatments (P>0.05). Combined single agent treatment (calcium stimulators) with protein kinase inhibitor, 6-DMAP were used to achieve a full oocyte activation. Both pronuclear and blastocyst formation rates were significantly higher (P<0.05) in the Eth+6-DMAP treatment group (38 and 27%) than in the other groups (16–21 and 7–9%, respectively, P<0.05). Low (0.2 mM) and high (2.5 mM) concentrations of 6-DMAP treatments with different treatment lengths (1.5 and 3.5 h) in the combined groups were also compared. Blastocyst formation and cleavage rates were greater in the high concentration with less treatment time groups (36% versus 4–20%, P<0.05). In conclusion, single activation agents, either Ca2+ stimulators or protein kinase inhibitors, could not fully activate mature rabbit oocytes. The best activation procedure obtained in this study was the Eth+6-DMAP combined treatment, which may be incorporated into regular nuclear transfer or cloning protocols.  相似文献

Surgical intervention in general anesthesia (GA) of the cow in late gestation is a stressful condition for both mother and fetus, potentially leading to premature delivery or fetal death. The present study hypothesized that fetal catheterization at days 246–253 (90% of gestation) is done with less physical and metabolic stress for the mother and fetus, when the surgery is performed on a standing cow and local anesthesia (LA) rather than on a recumbent cow in general anesthesia. Fetal and uterine maternal intra-vascular catheters were implanted during general anesthesia (GA, n=24) or local analgesia (LA, n=7). Blood gases and metabolite levels in the fetal calves and their mothers were measured during surgery and for 5 days post-operatively. During surgery, venous blood pH was higher (7.44±0.01 versus 7.39±0.01, P<0.05) and hemoglobin and oxygen contents lower in LA cows compared with GA cows (9.3±0.3 mg/dl versus 11.8±0.2 mg/dl, P<0.001 and 10.1±0.3 ml/dl versus 12.6±0.6 ml/dl, P<0.05). The differences between the two groups of fetuses reflected those of their dams in that LA fetuses showed lower arterial oxygen pressure (18.3±1.4 mmHg versus 24.8±1.4 mmHg, P<0.05) and hemoglobin (7.81±0.30 mg/dl versus 9.22±0.21 mg/dl P<0.01) and furthermore, they also showed higher blood glucose (2.4±0.2 mM versus 1.4±0.1 mM, P<0.01). During the 5 days post-surgery, 10 GA fetuses (42%) and 1 LA fetus (14%) died in utero. Bacterial contamination was implicated in six of the GA deaths and in the one LA death. In the dams with surviving calves, differences in hemoglobin (9.49±0.21 mg/dl versus 11.17±0.23 mg/dl P<0.001) and O2ct (10.9±0.3 ml/dl versus 12.5±0.5 ml/dl, P<0.05) were still present, and in addition, blood glucose was higher in LA versus GA cows (4.3±0.2 mM versus 3.8±0.1 mM, P<0.05). The choice of surgical method did not affect post-surgery blood chemistry in the surviving fetuses, except that the higher blood glucose in the LA fetuses at surgery tended to be maintained also post-operatively (2.0±0.2 mM versus 1.5±0.1 mM, P=0.07). The observed differences in blood chemistry parameters between the two methods of surgery and possibly in the fetal death may be explained by differences in catheterization method and the associated differences in physical and metabolic stress during and after surgery. Thus, surgery upon a standing cow in local anesthesia should be considered as an alternative to surgery in universal anesthesia for fetal catheterization in the cow in late gestation.  相似文献

An experiment examined intake, growth response and rumen digestion of young sheep fed ad libitum low quality grass hay alone or supplemented with approximately isonitrogenous amounts of barley grain and urea (Bar/N), safflower meal (SAF) or linseed meal (LIN) provided at 3 days intervals. Supplements comprised 13–20% of total DM intake. Sheep fed grass hay alone consumed 60.2 g DM/kg LW0.75/day of hay and an estimated 6.09 MJ metabolizable energy (ME)/day, and were in liveweight (LW) maintenance. Hay intake was decreased (P<0.05) by the Bar/N supplement with a substitution rate of 0.9, but was not changed by the oilseed meal supplements. Each of the supplements increased (P<0.05) estimated ME intake to a similar extent, but LW gain and wool growth were lower (P<0.05) in sheep supplemented with Bar/N than those supplemented with LIN. Rumen degradabilities of the SAF and LIN CP were estimated to be 0.72 and 0.62, respectively. Rumen ammonia concentrations in sheep fed hay alone (average 97 mg NH3/l) were expected to be adequate for microbial activity. Fractional outflow rate (FOR) of liquid from the rumen measured with Co-EDTA (mean 0.109 h−1) was greater than that of Cr-mordanted supplements (mean 0.056 h−1), which was in turn greater than the FOR of Cr-mordanted hay (mean 0.031 h−1). Diet did not affect these FOR. Supplemented sheep accommodated increased DM intake on Day 1 of the 3 day supplementation cycle by increasing rumen digesta load rather than by increasing rate of passage of digesta. Results show that the LW gain of young sheep fed low quality hay was increased more by either oilseed meal than by equivalent amounts of barley grain/urea supplement, apparently due to more efficient utilization of ME for LW gain.  相似文献

The relationship between ileal endogenous nitrogen (N) losses and N retention was studied in two experiments with growing pigs of 40 to 60 kg. In Experiment 1, 13 ileal cannulated castrated males were fed diets based on maize starch, containing either soyabean meal (SBM) with a low trypsin inhibitor activity (TIA), a mixture of toasted and untoasted soyabean meal with a high TIA (mSBM), a commercial batch of peas, or rapeseed expeller cake (RC). Ileal endogenous N recovery was measured using the 15N-isotope dilution technique. Apparent ileal digestibility of crude protein (CP) for the SBM, mSBM, pea and RC diets were 82.8, 72.0, 76.7 and 68.7% (P < 0.05). True ileal CP digestibility for the diets was 96.5, 93.0, 94.0 and 87.5% (P < 0.05), and the recovery of ileal endogenous N was 3.08, 6.01, 4.55 and 5.36 g/kg DMI (P < 0.05). In Experiment 2, sixteen castrated males were used to determine N retention, using almost similar diets as in Experiment 1. The diets contained either SBM, mSBM or peas and were balanced for the contents of apparent ileal digestible (ID) CP (96 g/kg) and ID essential amino acids (EAA; at least 85% of requirement values). The fourth treatment was a diet with mSBM as protein source, but supplemented with EAA to the level of 95% of the requirement values (diet mSBMs). Apparent faecal CP digestibility for the SBM, mSBM, pea and mSBMs diets was 88.6, 87.2, 86.1 and 86.0% (P < 0.05). Urinary N excretion and N retention for these treatments were 0.39, 0.59, 0.40, 0.53 (P < 0.05) and 0.87, 0.80, 0.85, 0.84 g/kg0.75/day (P < 0.05), respectively. Utilization of dietary ID N for N retention were 79.8, 73.3, 78.2 and 77.6% (P < 0.05), respectively. The study showed that increased ileal endogenous N losses are associated with higher losses of urinary N and with a lower N retention. Supplementation of extra essential AA to a diet causing a relatively high flow of ileal endogenous N, may compensate for the lower N utilization under these conditions, and thus limit effects on N retention.  相似文献

We have investigated the role of steroid hormones as coronary risk factors in Helsinki Heart Study population of dyslipidemic middle-aged men. We compare here the effects of gemfibrozil and placebo on the serum levels of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), its sulfate (DHEAS), their metabolite androstanediol glucuronide (3-AdiolG), androstenedione, cortisol, testosterone, and sex-hormone binding globulin (SHBG) in non-smokers. We also examined the associations between steroid and lipoprotein levels in both treatment groups. Compared with placebo gemfibrozil treatment was associated with significant elevations of the mean levels of DHEA 10.2 vs 8.0 nmol/1; P<0.005, of DHEAS 8.0 vs 5.8 μmol/1; P<0.001, of 3AdiolG 18.3 vs 8.4 nmol/1; P<0.001, of androstenedione 5.7 vs 5.1 nmol/1; P<0.02, and of cortisol 426 vs 358 nmol/1; P<0.001. The mean SHBG levels decreased from 46.4 to 41.7 nmol/1; P=0.03 with gemfibrozil treatment. No difference was found in testosterone levels 17.7 vs 18.8 nmol/1; P=0.11, or the ratio of testosterone/SHBG 0.45 vs 0.43; P=0.23. Positive correlations were found between high density lipoprotein-cholesterol and DHEAS (r=0.267; P<0.01) and DHEA (r=0.282; P<0.01) levels and negative correlations between low density lipoprotein-cholesterol and 3-AdiolG (r=−0.400; P<0.001) and cortisol (r=−0.281; P<0.01) levels in the gemfibozil group. Our results indicate that gemfibrozil treatment increases the production and turnover of adrenal androgens and cortisol, and suggest that activation of the adrenocorticol function and increased metabolism of androgens are related to the improved lipoprotein pattern during gemfibrozil treatment.  相似文献

The anti-oxidant system of reduced glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX), catalase (CAT), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) has been described as a defense functioning mechanism against lipid peroxidation (LPO) in semen, and is important in maintaining sperm motility and viability. This anti-oxidant capacity of sperm cells may be insufficient in preventing LPO during the freeze–thawing process. The aim of this study was thus to determine the influence of varying doses of anti-oxidant additives on standard semen parameters, lipid peroxidation and anti-oxidant activities after the freeze–thawing of goat semen. Ejaculate samples (artificial vagina) obtained from 4 mature Angora goats were evaluated and pooled at 37 °C. The semen samples diluted with a Tris-based extender, containing taurine (25, 50, 75 mM), trehalose (25, 50, 75 mM), and cysteine (5, 10, 15 mM), and an extender containing no anti-oxidant additives (control) were again evaluated. Diluted semen was cooled down to 5 °C and frozen in 0.25 ml French straws, prior to being stored in liquid nitrogen. Frozen straws were thawed in a water bath (37 °C) for 30 s for microscopic sperm evaluation. Upon evaluation of parameters for semen quality, the use of a Tris-based extender supplemented with anti-oxidant additives was found to cause no significant improvement in sperm mortality, when compared to the controls. Increasing doses of taurine and trehalose decreased (P < 0.05) the sperm motility following the freeze–thawing of the goat semen. In biochemical assays, the application of taurine (75 mM) produced the lowest level of malondialdehyde (MDA) (4.46 ± 0.31 nmol/ml), compared to the controls (P < 0.001). Lower GSH levels were higher in the groups in which cysteine was included at 10 and 15 mM (3.27 ± 0.11 and 3.45 ± 0.28 nmol/ml) – compared to the group which received 5 mM cysteine, as well as the controls (2.27 ± 0.08 and 2.50 ± 0.08 nmol/ml respectively, P < 0.001). Compared to the controls, taurine at a concentration of 25 and 75 mM, and increasing doses (50 and 75 mM) of trehalose, significantly increased the GSH-PX activity (P < 0.01). The maintenance of CAT activity was demonstrated to be higher with the addition of 10 and 15 mM cysteine, compared to the other groups (P < 0.001). Vitamin A (VitA) levels were significantly higher, compared to the controls (267.34 ± 9.68 mg/dl and 267.34 ± 9.68 mg/dl, respectively), when 25 mM taurine (329.61 ± 6.35 mg/dl) and 10 mM (318.64 ± 6.34 mg/dl) cysteine was added to the extender (P < 0.001). The results of this study provide a new approach to the cryopreservation of Angora goat semen and could contribute to the improvement of this technology in the goat industry.  相似文献

The ‘Werribee farrowing pen' (WFP) was developed as a loose housing alternative to the farrowing crate. The WFP occupies about twice the space of a crate and comprises two compartments, a ‘nest' and a ‘non-nest' area. In this experiment, we investigated the effects of reducing total pen space by modifying the dimensions of the ‘nest'. The hypothesis was that modifying ‘nest' size and width would not negatively affect piglet survival. A reduction in total floor space in the WFP may increase attractiveness for adoption of the system by pig producers. The experiment had a 2×2 factorial design with nine replicates and a total of 72 primiparous sows (Large White×Landrace) and their litters. All subjects were included to day 4 of lactation, but production data to weaning (day 23) was restricted to 36 litters. We examined the effects of ‘nest' size (large: L vs. small: S) and width (wide: W vs. narrow: N) on sow and piglet behaviours and piglet survival. The W, as compared to N treatment sows, had longer mean bouts of standing in the ‘nest' during 16–8 h pre-farrowing (3.7 vs. 2.0 min, P<0.01), suggesting that pre-farrowing (‘nesting') behaviour may have been adversely affected by narrow nest width. On the first 2 days of lactation, sow suckling grunts occurred more in the W than N treatment (14.1 and 8.0% of observations, P<0.01). However, this was due to an approximately 50% lower incidence in the SN treatment, as compared to the other treatments combined (5.9 and 12.7%). Piglets spent more (P<0.01) time at the udder in L vs. S (41 and 30%) and W vs. N nests (40 and 31%) and performed more (P<0.05) sucking behaviour (i.e., drinking milk from a teat) in L vs. S nests (2.5 and 1.2%). These differences were due to SN treatment litters sucking less than other treatments combined (0.9 vs. 2.2%). Of the 680 piglets born (n=72 litters), 3.8% were stillborn and 6.8% died between birth and day 4 of lactation. From day 5 to weaning (n=36 litters), 3.5% of piglets died, all due to Escherichia coli infection. While there were no effects of treatment on piglet survival, liveborn piglets were less likely (P<0.05) to die from E. coli in the L vs. S treatments (9/24 vs. 23/33 piglets). In conclusion, our results provide evidence that the size and width of the farrowing ‘nest' in a loose farrowing system may effect sow and piglet behaviours that may be relevant to piglet survival.  相似文献

The effects of concentrate energy source on feed intake and rumen fermentation parameters of lactating dairy cattle, offered one of three grass silages differing in fermentation and intake characteristics, were evaluated in a partially balanced changeover design experiment involving four rumen fistulated dairy cows. Three silages were harvested using different management practices prior to and at ensiling. Silages A and C and silage B were harvested from primary or secondary regrowths either untreated or treated with a bacterial inoculant. For silages A, B and C, dry matter (DM) concentrations were 334, 197 and 183 g/kg (S.E. 3.1), pH values 4.00, 4.79 and 4.80 (S.E. 0.042) and ammonia nitrogen (N) concentrations were 123, 319 and 295 g/kg total N (S.E. 20.0), respectively. Two concentrates were formulated to contain similar crude protein, effective rumen degradable protein, digestible undegradable protein and metabolisable energy concentrations but using different carbohydrate sources to achieve a wide range of starch concentrations. For the low and high starch concentrates starch concentrations were 17 and 304 g/kg DM and acid detergent fibre concentrations were 170 and 80 g/kg DM, respectively. The silages were offered ad libitum, supplemented with 10 kg fresh concentrate daily. For silages A, B and C, DM intakes were 10.9, 7.2 and 8.6 kg/day and concentrate energy sources did not alter (P>0.05) intake. Increasing the level of starch in the concentrate decreased the molar concentration of acetate (P<0.05) and tended to increase the molar concentration of propionate (P<0.1). Silage type altered the molar concentration of acetate (P<0.01) and the acetate:propionate ratio (P<0.05). There were no silagetype×concentrate interactions (P>0.05) on silage intake or rumen fermentation parameters. It is concluded that when concentrate and silage form equal proportions of the diet, the composition of the silage has an over-riding influence on rumen fermentation parameters. Furthermore, the changes in milk fat concentration, observed in a concurrent production study, due to changes in silage and concentrate types can be accounted for by changes in the ratio of lipogenic to glucogenic precursors in the rumen fluid.  相似文献

A total of 39 postmenopausal women 40–70 years of age and undergoing hormone replacement therapy participated in a 6-month weight reduction program, which consisted of a low calorie diet (5040 KJ/day) and phentermine hydrochloride therapy. Subjects had an average body mass index of 35.95±5.32 kg/m2 and 42.20±11.0 kg of total fat. Body mass index, plasma lipids, total and trunk fat, and plasma apoproteins were measured at baseline and after 3 and 6 months of the weight reduction program. Subjects experienced an overall 10% weight loss during the treatment period (P<0.001). Plasma LDL cholesterol and triglycerides were reduced by 18% and 15% (P<0.01) respectively, whereas HDL cholesterol was increased by 9% (P<0.01) over the 6-month period. Plasma apoproteins were significantly affected by weight loss. Plasma apolipoprotein (apo) B concentrations were reduced 6.5% (P<0.01), and apo C-III and apo E were reduced by 9% over 6 months (P<0.01). The observed decreases in plasma apo B were significantly correlated with the observed changes in plasma cholesterol (r=0.356, P<0.01) over 3 months. In addition, changes in plasma triglycerides were correlated with changes in both apo C-III (r=0.436) and apo E (r=0.354) over 6 months. These results suggest that weight loss may have multifactorial effects on lipoprotein metabolism, resulting in better plasma lipid and apoprotein profiles.  相似文献

Four groups of four Alpine × local male goats (20-month-old), each on kermes oak (Quercus coccifera L.) foliage were used to investigate nutrient intake and utilisation, blood metabolites and clinical parameters when supplemented with polyethylene-containing and polyethylene-free feed blocks and with polyethylene glycol (PEG, molecular weight 4000). PEG was used to neutralise tannins. The composition (g/kg DM) of feed blocks (B and BPEG, respectively) was: olive cake (367 and 331), cactus fruit (90 and 80), wheat bran (243 and 218), quicklime (154 and 139), urea (73 and 66), salt (73 and 66) and PEG (0 and 100). Group 1 was not supplemented (control) and group 2 was supplemented with feed blocks (B). PEG-containing feed blocks were fed to goats in group 3 (BPEG). The fourth group received feed blocks and PEG separately, i.e. mixed with 5 g processed barley (B+PEG). The amount of PEG distributed to the latter group was calculated so that goats supplemented with BPEG or B+PEG consume the same amount of PEG. Animals were adapted on experimental diets for 21 days before starting a 6-day-faecal collection period. The nutritive value of kermes oak foliage was low due mainly to high levels of phenolic compounds particularly lignin (236 g/kg DM) and tannins (34.8 g equivalent tannic acid/kg DM) and low concentration of crude protein (62 g/kg DM). Accordingly, dry matter intake (34.8 g/kg W0.75) and apparent digestibility of DM (0.527), CP (0.332) and neutral detergent fibre (NDF, 0.429) were low in goats fed on this shrub species as a sole diet. Although DM intake of feed blocks was low (113 g per day), supplementation of PEG-free blocks almost doubled consumption of kermes oak (61.2 g/kg W0.75) and intakes of digestible organic matter and CP increased from 17.4 and 1.0 g/W0.75, respectively, to 46.6 and 33.0 g/W0.75. Further improvement of these parameters was not observed by incorporation of PEG in block or by PEG supply along with the block (BPEG and B+PEG versus B, P>0.05). Irrespective of dietary treatments, blood metabolites, i.e. glucose, urea, total proteins, albumin, creatinine, gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase, calcium, phosphorus and magnesium were within the normal range for local goats. Feed blocks increased serum urea (P<0.05), probably as consequence of improved N value of the diet. Biochemical parameters and clinical signs suggested a partial intoxication of goats solely on kermes oak. Supplementation with feed blocks with or without PEG improved cardiac, respiratory and rumen contraction frequencies and raised body temperature to the normal value (37 °C). Olive cake-based feed block enriched with squeezed cactus fruits was found to be a cost effective supplement to substantially improve the nutritive value of kermes oak-based diet and to maintain healthy goats.  相似文献

Experiments were carried out to study the changes in the values of feed efficiency (FE), total protein efficiency (TPE) and metabolizable energy efficiency (MEE) of broiler chicks fed during four age periods (14–21, 21–28, 28–35 and 35–42 days). Five experimental diets were similar in composition but different in the irradiation dose (0, 5, 10, 25 or 50 kGy) applied to the meat–bone meal content of each diet. The results indicated that feeding of broiler chicks on irradiated meat–bone meal (5–50 kGy) had no significant (P>0.05) effects on FE, TPE, MEE and body weight gain during the four experimental age periods. The average values of the FE (feed consumption/weight gain), TPE (weight gain/total protein consumption) and MEE (metabolizable energy consumption in MJ/kg gain) were 1.96, 2.59 and 23.13, respectively. The values of FE and MEE increased while TPE decreased significantly (P<0.05) with age. The pooled FE value was 1.60 during the 14–21 days of age and increased to 2.66 from 35–42 days of age. However, the TPE value was 3.01 during the 14–21-day age period and decreased to 1.82 over the 35–42-day age period. The energy consumption value to produce one kg of body weight increased during the 35–42-day period by 7.71–12.72 MJ/kg gain in comparison with that from the other experimental age periods. Weight gain rate decreased significantly (P<0.05) during the 35–42-day period (66 g/week/bird) when compared with the rate observed during the 14 through 35-day age period.  相似文献

An experiment examined the intake, growth responses and rumen digestion of young sheep fed ad libitum oat or barley straws alone or supplemented with approximately isonitrogenous amounts of barley grain and urea (Bar/N), safflower seed meal (SAF) or linseed meal (LIN) supplements provided at 3 day intervals. The supplements comprised 15–22% of total dry matter (DM) intake. Sheep offered either of the straws alone consumed 35.0–37.2 g DM/kg liveweight (LW0.75) per day of straw and an estimated 2.03–2.07 MJ metabolizable energy (ME) per day, and lost 85–97 g LW per day. Supplements increased (P<0.05 or <0.001) voluntary intake of straw and of total DM, and the organic matter (OM) digestibility of the entire diet. Each of the supplements increased (P<0.001) the estimated ME intake to a similar extent and changed the rapid LW loss of sheep fed straw alone to approximate LW maintenance. Rumen ammonia concentrations in sheep fed barley and oat straws alone (12 and 24 mg NH3/l, respectively) were expected to be deficient for microbial activity, but were increased (P<0.001) by provision of the supplements. Digestion of straw in synthetic fibre bags incubated in the rumen was markedly increased (P<0.01 or <0.001) when supplements were provided. Rumen pH was depressed briefly to pH <6.0 by the Bar/N, but not by the LIN or SAF, supplements. In young sheep fed cereal straws and losing LW rapidly the oilseed meal supplements increased wool growth more than the barley grain–urea supplements, but both types of supplement increased ME intake similarly and were equally effective to reduce the extent of LW loss.  相似文献

Effects of the use of three different soyabean products (soya concentrate and two different soyabean meals), peas or rapeseed hulls in the diet on the apparent ileal digestibility of CP (N × 6.25) and recovery of ileal endogenous nitrogen (N) in weanling pigs were investigated. Ileal endogenous N was measured using the 15N-isotope dilution method. Thirteen castrated male pigs (BW of 12–23 kg) were fed maize starch-based diets containing either soya concentrate (SC), purified rapeseed hulls (pRH) and SC (SRH diet), soyabean meal (SBM), a mixture of toasted and untoasted soyabean meal (mSBM) or peas. The apparent ileal digestibility (AID) of dry matter (DM) for the SC, SRH, SBM, mSBM and pea diets was 82.1, 74.3, 83.3, 80.0 and 74.9% (P < 0.05), respectively. The AID of CP for these diets was 82.4, 67.6, 81.6, 68.0 and 76.9% (P < 0.05), respectively. Similar differences in the AID for amino acids (AA) in the diets were found. The AID for CP and for the sum of AA in the pRH, as calculated by the difference between the SC and SRH diet, were 26 and 41%, respectively. For the SC, SRH, SBM, mSBM and pea diet, ileal recovery (g/kg of DM intake) for endogenous N were 2.79, 3.46, 2.73, 4.89 and 3.29 (P < 0.05), respectively, and for dietary N 1.16, 4.11, 1.64, 4.15 and 2.53 (P < 0.05), respectively. For the SC, SBM and mSBM diets, differences in AID of CP and AA were associated with differences in both the ileal recovery of endogenous N and the recovery of undigested dietary N. Differences in trypsin inhibitor activity (TIA) of the soya products were likely associated with these observations. It was also concluded that fibre (Neutral Detergent Fibre; NDF) in pea could be at least in part responsible for the relatively low AID of CP and AA and the high recovery of ileal endogenous N in the pea diet. The low AID of CP and AA of pRH was likely related to the association of protein to the fibre matrix in the fibre-rich rapeseed hulls.  相似文献

Three experiments were carried out to determine whether dietary wood (oak) charcoal applied during entire or phase feeding period would affect growth performance, abdominal fat weight, carcass weight, carcass yield, carcass composition and nutrient excretion of broilers and to determine whether dietary wood charcoal supplementation would affect laying performance and egg quality of laying hens. In the first experiment, different inclusion levels (0, 25, 50 and 100 g/kg feed) of wood charcoal in the diet were examined for a 6-week-period using broiler chicks of initial age 1 week. Dietary wood charcoal significantly increased feed intake (P<0.001), body weight gain (P<0.001) and improved feed conversion ratio (P<0.05) up to 28 days of age. However, at 49 days of age, charcoal inclusion did not significantly (P>0.05) affect body weight gain, feed intake, carcass weight and carcass yield, but increased (P<0.05) feed conversion ratio, carcass ash content, fat excretion, while reducing (P<0.05) mineral excretion in a dose dependent manner. In the second experiment, a phase application of dietary wood charcoal for a 6-week-period broiler chicks of initial age 1 week was assessed. During the first 28 days of age wood charcoal improved feed conversion ratio significantly (P<0.05). At 49 days of age, the groups receiving charcoal in the starter and/or finisher diets showed significantly (P<0.05) higher body weight gain and carcass weight than the control group receiving no charcoal. In the third experiment, different levels (0, 10, 20 and 40 g/kg feed) of wood charcoal supplementation to a layer diet were examined for a 7-week-period using laying hens of initial age 34 weeks. Dietary charcoal supplementation did not have a significant effect on any parameters related to performance and egg quality, but significantly reduced number of cracked eggs and the reduction was dose dependent (P<0.01). These data demonstrate that wood charcoal inclusion to the diet could be of value in improving broiler performance during the first 28 days of fattening period. In later ages, the positive effects of wood charcoal are limited. However, in laying hens dietary supplementation of wood charcoal reduces number of cracked eggs.  相似文献

Eleven non-pregnant indigenous goats were bled three times a week from 1 June 1988 to 31 May 1989. They were fed hay ad libitum supplemented by concentrates, and housed indoors in single pens until November when the goats were divided between two large pens. Plasma progesterone profiles were used to calculate cycle length: 73.3% (99/135) of cycles, mean length 22.0 ± 0.3 days, were classified as normal (N). N cycles had a mean luteal phase of 17.5 ± 0.2 days followed by a peri-ovulatory period of 4.5 ± 0.2 days. Cycles greater than 30 days long were classified as extended (E). These had normal length luteal phases followed by basal progesterone for 15.4 ± 0.5 days (n = 22) or 38.9 ± 4.1 days (n = 10) before the next cycle, giving cycle lengths of 33.6 ± 0.7 days and 56.3 ± 0.9 days, respectively. Four E cycles (mean length 117.0 ± 30 days) had a persistent corpus luteum followed by basal progesterone of 17.8 ± 5.6 days in duration.

The distribution of N versus E cycles varied between animals and was significantly influenced by season (P < 0.005) and housing (P < 0.005), but not body condition. The proportion of N cycles was highest in the cool, dry winter months from June to August, fell during the hot, rainy months from September to February, and rose again between March and May. The proportion of N cycles was higher for goats housed in single pens, however the effect of season and housing were confounded by the move from single to group pens in November.  相似文献
