Effects of density dependence on animal movements have received much attention in ecology, but it is still debated to what extent dispersal and movements in general are density dependent, and their potential contribution to population regulation processes. Here, we determine the occurrence and nature of density dependence in the movements of a Neotropical marsupial, the black‐eared opossum Didelphis aurita Wied‐Neuwied 1826. Using spool‐and‐line tracking devices, we estimated the tortuosity of fine‐scale movements of 149 individuals by their fractal dimension D. We evaluated the relative importance of population size, reproductive or climatic seasons and reproductive maturity of individuals as determinants of movement tortuosity, using a model selection approach. Population size was the most important determinant of movement tortuosity, with season (climatic seasons for females, reproductive seasons for males) and reproductive maturity as secondary but also important variables. We detected a positive density‐dependent effect on movement tortuosity, resulting in more intensive use of areas by individuals during periods of high population size. This positive association between movement tortuosity and population size is more likely to result from intraspecific competition, which forces individuals to explore their environment more intensively during high‐density periods. Therefore, despite being density dependent, movements in D. aurita apparently do not contribute to population regulation mechanisms.  相似文献

Abstract Species of didelphid marsupials (Didelphimorphia, Didelphidae) differ in their use of the forest strata, but it is not clear whether these differences are in fundamental or realized niches. The fundamental niche of seven species of didelphids (Caluromys philander, Didelphis aurita, Gracilinanus microtarsus, Marmosops incanus, Metachirus nudicaudatus, Micoureus demerarae, and Philander frenatus) was compared using their performance in arboreal walking. The association between performance and vertical use of the forest also was tested accounting for phylogenetic and allometric effects. Tests consisted of making the animal cross five 3 m long horizontal supports of different diameters, 1 m from the ground. The cycle of maximum speed was chosen to measure stride length, frequency and velocity. Arboreal species performed better than the terrestrial ones, but a major part of the variation in stride length (70.95%) and stride frequency (88.10%) was associated with body size. Part of the variation in stride length independent of body size (14.05%) was associated with the degree of vertical use of the forest, after phylogenetic effects were accounted for. Fundamental niches of six of the seven species were discriminated with the performance tests used. Discrepancies between the realized and fundamental niches can be inferred for two of these species, D. aurita and P. frenatus.  相似文献

Summary In forest of the Brasilian Amazon, the Black-eared Fairy (Heliothryx aurita) uses a gliding fall, similar to that movement presented by the fall of a dead leaf, when leaving the nest. This behaviour may protect adult or nest against forest hawk predators.

Despite most neotropical marsupials have arboreal habits, methodological and analytical difficulties usually hamper the study of vertical movements of individuals. We used the spool-and-line technique to record height and incline of movements, escape behaviour and use of refuges by the opossum Micoureus paraguayanus (Tate, 1931) (Didelphimorphia, Didelphidae) in the Atlantic Forest, Brazil. A new index for measuring intensity of vertical use of space by individuals is introduced and applied to compare movements of males and females of M. paraguayanus. Activity on the ground was scarce and refuges were located exclusively above-ground. The lower stratum was the most used by individuals. Females had greater intensity of vertical use than males, exploring more the vertical axis of the forest. The results confirm arboreal habits of M. paraguayanus and demonstrate that males and females use differently the vertical dimension of habitat. The new index presented can be a valuable tool for studying use of space by arboreal small mammals.  相似文献

One of the major challenges in animal ecology is to understand the factors and processes driving movement behaviour. Although density may influence movement patterns, the occurrence and nature of density‐dependence in animal movements are still unclear, particularly whether it may vary among populations of a species, or across time within a population. Here, we evaluate the occurrence and nature of density‐dependence in the movements of a Neotropical marsupial, the Grey four‐eyed opossum Philander frenatus (Didelphidae, Didelphimorphia). We quantified fine‐scale path tortuosity of individuals inhabiting continuous forest areas and forest fragments, in different climatic seasons (humid vs. super‐humid). We also determined the relative importance of population size compared to sex and body mass on movements, using a model‐selection approach. In forest fragments, path tortuosity increased with population size in the super‐humid season, but decreased in the humid season. In the continuous forest, path tortuosity was affected only by sex and body mass, being slightly higher in males and negatively related to body mass. The occurrence of density‐dependence on movements only in forest fragments is likely to reflect the higher overall density of P. frenatus in small forest fragments. The variation in the nature of density‐dependence between climatic seasons is likely to reflect a trade off between foraging over large areas (humid season, low resource availability) versus avoiding agonistic encounters (super‐humid season, high resource availability). Our results show that (i) density‐dependence in movements may be context‐dependent occurring only in areas of relatively high overall population density; and (ii) density may affect movements in different ways at different climatic seasons.  相似文献

Little is known about the seasonal elevational movements for most tropical avifauna species. Seasonal elevational movements of the Eastern Olive Sunbird Cyanomitra olivacea were studied along an elevational gradient from 600 to 1 500?m above sea level in the Uluguru Mountains, Tanzania, between May 2005 and February 2006. The recapture of ringed individuals along an elevational gradient across seasons provided evidence for the seasonal elevational movement of the Eastern Olive Sunbird in the Uluguru Mountains and the first documented evidence for this species in the Eastern Arc Mountains as a whole. Due to forest fragmentation and lack of corridors connecting high- and low-altitude forests in the Uluguru Mountains, the results have implications for conservation of the forest along the entire elevational gradient as well as for other forest bird species that have been documented to make seasonal elevational movements in the Uluguru Mountains and the entire Eastern Arc Mountains.  相似文献

The biology of small marsupials is poorly known because most species are nocturnal and arboreal. Using the spool-and-line device, we investigated the use of vertical space by male and female Marmosops incanus in the Serra dos Órgãos National Park. Diameter and slopes of supports also were compared. The species was sexually dimorphic in body size, males weighing on average 72.6 g and females 48.1 g, but males and females did not differ in the frequency of ground movements (GM) and understory movements (UM), or in diameter and slopes of supports used. Males and females also used the forest strata similarly, moving 67% on the ground and 33% in the understory. Both sexes used 0.9–1.7 cm support diameters, and support slopes near the horizontal (more than 50% of cases), but preferred to access a given height by moving on high slope supports (mostly near 90°). Sexual dimorphism in body size does not seem to constrain movements of M. incanus.  相似文献

The didelphid marsupial, Didelphis aurita, is suggested as an intraguild predator and as key‐species in small mammal assemblages of the Atlantic Forest of Brazil. The field experiments required to test this hypothesis are complex to implement, but the recent revival of regression methods offers a viable alternative. Here we use the dynamic and static regression methods to determine the importance of D. aurita as a competitor and intraguild predator. Capture–recapture data from two localities in the Rio de Janeiro State were used, Garrafão (municipality of Guapimirim), a coastal forest of the Serra do Mar, and Barra de Maricá, a costal sand dune vegetation. Population and microhabitat variables were monitored from April 1997 to April 2003 in Garrafão, and from January 1986 to July 1990 in Barra de Maricá. Microhabitat variables were related to Canopy, Plant, Litter and Rock covers, Obstruction from 0 to 1.5 m, and Number of logs. Exploitation competition was tested by the dynamic method, which models the effects of D. aurita on the per capita growth rate of a species. Interference by predation or competition was tested by the static method, where the abundance of D. aurita at trap stations was regressed against the abundance of other small mammals, after removal of any variation associated with microhabitat factors. Exploitation competition was not detected, but the interference of D. aurita was pervasive, affecting all small mammals studied in the two localities. The clear avoidance of D. aurita by all small mammals tested in two localities of different physiognomies indicates that it functions as an intraguild predator, even if actual predation by D. aurita is an occasional event.  相似文献

In Amazonia, the assemblages of several taxa differ significantly between upland terra firme and white‐water flooded várzea forests, but little is known about the diversity and distribution of bats in these two forest types. We compare the spatio‐temporal patterns of bat assemblage composition and structure in adjacent terra firme and várzea forests in the lower Purus River region of central Brazilian Amazonia. Bats were sampled using mist nets at five sites in each forest type during 40 nights (2400 net‐hours). We captured 1069 bats representing 42 species and Phyllostomidae bats comprised 99.3 percent of all captures. The bat assemblages in várzea and terra firme forests were significantly different, mainly due to a marked dissimilarity in species composition and in the number of captures during high‐water season. In addition, bat assemblages within forest types differed significantly between seasons for both terra firme and várzea. Frugivores dominated the bat assemblages in both forest types. Overall guild structure did not change between várzea and terra firme or between seasons, but frugivore and animalivore abundance increased significantly in várzea forest during the inundation. The difference in assemblage structure observed in the high‐water season is probably caused by the annual várzea flooding, which provides an effective barrier to the persistence of many understory bats. We also hypothesize that some bat species may undertake seasonal movements between forest types in response to fruit abundance, and our results further underline the importance of floodplain habitats for the conservation of species in the Amazon.  相似文献

Ligustrum lucidum is the major exotic tree in NW Argentina montane forests (Yungas). To assess the effects of its expanding invasion on avian communities we (1) measured different habitat properties (vertical forest structure and composition, vegetation cover, light availability, air temperature, air relative humidity and soil litter depth), (2) compared bird species composition and diversity in Ligustrum-dominated and native-dominated secondary forests and (3) analyzed seasonal patterns and changes in these variables between forest types. The study was conducted during 2010–2011 wet and dry seasons, at two altitudinal zones: 500–800 and 1100–1450 masl. Compared with native forests, Ligustrum dominated forests had a more homogeneous vertical forest structure and denser canopy cover (resulting in lower understory solar radiation), significantly lower understory cover and lower litter depth. Air temperature and relative humidity did not differ between forests in either season. Solar radiation was higher in the dry season in both forest types, but litter depth showed opposite patterns between seasons depending on forest type. We recorded 59 bird species in 21 families. Bird species abundance, richness and diversity indexes were significantly lower in Ligustrum-dominated relative to native forests of similar successional age, which had almost twice as many species as the former. Avian communities differed between altitudinal zones, but the difference was stronger between Ligustrum and native-dominated forests. Avian community composition was less variable in time and space in native forests than in Ligustrum-dominated ones. Our results suggest that L. lucidum invasion generates structurally homogeneous and simpler forests that represent a less suitable habitat for a diverse avifauna. This illustrates the wide ecological changes (from habitat properties and ecosystem functioning to vertebrate community composition) that the subtropical mountain forests of Argentina are experiencing with this invasion.  相似文献

Dendrobatid poison frogs sequester lipophilic alkaloids from their arthropod prey to use as a form of chemical defense. Some dendrobatid frogs seasonally migrate between the leaf litter of the forest floor in the dry season to the canopy in the wet season, which may yield differences in prey (arthropods) and therefore alkaloid availability over space and time. Here, we document a seasonal vertical migration of Andinobates fulguritus (the yellow‐bellied poison frog) from ground to canopy between dry and wet seasons. We observed turnover in alkaloid composition between seasons and found that dry season frogs contained a lower relative quantity of alkaloids; however, there was no change in alkaloid richness between seasons. The 77 alkaloids of 13 structural classes identified in this population appear to be derived mostly from mites and ants, though the two most common alkaloids were mite derived. Our observed shifts in defensive profiles are consistent with well‐documented turnover in mite and ant communities between seasons and vertical strata. As climate change is expected to lengthen and strengthen dry seasons in many tropical regions, our results suggest that arboreal poison frogs forced to the ground for longer periods of time may see a shift in the abundance of alkaloids, possibly decreasing their defensive potential. This study provides further predictions for the wide‐reaching effects of climate change, even as nuanced as charismatic poison frogs losing their poisons. The Amazon basin holds very high parrot species richness but almost nothing is known of parrot population densities in the region or how these vary between species, habitats, sites, and seasons. Such data are becoming important as humans impact on increasing areas of the region. Seventeen parrot species were surveyed using a line transect distance sampling method over 3 yr in floodplain and terra firme forests at two sites in the Tambopata region of southeast Peru. Density estimates for most species were in the range of 3.3–7.8/km2, with Brotogeris cyanoptera and Amazona farinosa reaching densities of 22 and 23/km2 in floodplain forest during the dry season. Parrot densities were higher in floodplain forest than in terra firme forest at both sites. The parrot communities of terra firme forests were similar across sites and seasons, but those in floodplain forests differed widely across sites and across seasons. Upper canopy birds are notoriously difficult to survey. We introduce a procedure to correct for the likely violation of the assumption that all birds on the transect line are detected (distance sampling assumption g(0) = 1). We correct g(0) based on calling rates of birds using a cue‐counting technique. Multipliers for g(0) differ across species and site, but not season. This method yielded density estimates on average 22 percent higher (6–40% higher in individual species) than those from the standard method.  相似文献

Diurnal heliotropic leaf movements, microclimate, stomatal conductance and leaf water potential of two leguminous species, Strophostyles helvola and Amphicarpa bracteata, were measured in three different habitats over two growing seasons. The habitats occurred along an environmental gradient from an open, sandy beach to a closed canopy deciduous forest understory. At the beach site, heliotropism in S. helvola resulted in higher irradiances in morning and afternoon hours and lower irradiances during midday periods compared to an horizontal leaf. In an exposed forest site A. bracteata responded within minutes to penetration of the direct solar beam by orienting its leaves to steep angles. In contrast, plants in closed canopy locations showed little diurnal leaf movement. The combined results of leaf energy budget calculations and plant physiological responses suggest that ecological ramifications of these movements vary with habitat. We hypothesize that heliotropism in open habitats increases water use efficiency and maximizes carbon returns on plant investment in photosynthesis. Conversely, we hypothesize that leaf movements in understory habitats represent a morphological mechanism to avoid thermal damage, photoinhibition of the photosynthetic apparatus, and water stress associated with high irradiances.  相似文献

The feeding ecology of the Atlantic forest marmosets (Callithrix spp.) in southeastern Brazil is poorly known, and few studies have focused on buffy tufted-eared marmosets, Callithrix aurita. We determined the food items and investigated the seasonal variation in the diet of a group of four Callithrix aurita in a 17-ha semideciduous forest fragment in southern Minas Gerais State, Brazil. We recorded daily feeding activities between October 1994 and September 1995 using scan sampling at 5-min intervals. The marmosets devoted feeding time to gums (50.5%), fruits (11%), and animal prey (38.5%) in a total of 499 records. Plant resources comprised 27 species from 16 families. They used Acacia paniculata (Mimosoideae, Leguminosae), the main gum source (82%), year-round. Maclura tinctoria (Moraceae) was the fruit species that they consumed most (22%). The marmosets preyed on caterpillars (33%), katydids (5%), and homopterans (4%). Feeding on fruits varied seasonally and was inversely related to gum feeding. Consumption of animal prey remained constant over the year. The wide and year-round dependence on gum suggests that Acacia may play a critical role in marmoset persistence in forest fragments.  相似文献

Trampling paths are a feature of estuarine habitats in southeastern Australia. An experimental investigation quantified the impact of trampling over a 3 year period on the microhabitat features and macrofaunal assemblages in a temperate mangrove forest in New South Wales, Australia. The magnitude of the impact varied between 0 and 25 passes (representing a visit by 25 people), which reduced the biomass of the Bostrychia–Caloglossa algal association by 50%. The frequency of trampling varied between one and four, simulating a single and seasonal visits by a group of people to the mangrove forest. The main impact of trampling was an alteration to the microhabitat structures of the forest floor including a decrease in the number and vertical height of pneumatophores, an increase in the proportion of bent and broken pneumatophores in trampled lanes and a decrease in the biomass of the epiphytic Bostrychia–Caloglossa algal association. The macrofauna most impacted by trampling were the gastropods most commonly associated with the pneumatophores and algal assemblages and included Ophicardelus spp. and Assiminea buccinoides. Those gastropods least impacted by trampling were commonly associated with the surface of the sediment or were known to move over the surface and included Bembicium auratum and Cassidula zonata. There was little impact on the main burrowing crab, Heloecius cordiformis. There were some indirect impacts of trampling with the recruitment of Ophicardelus spp. Assiminea buccinoides and Salinator solida reduced in the subsequent year after trampling had ceased. People can create walking paths in mangrove forests that have long term effects on the habitat. An appropriate management emphasis may lie in maintaining the structural features of the habitat.  相似文献

The scyphozoan Aurelia aurita (Linnaeus) is a cosmopolitan species, having been reported from a variety of coastal and shelf sea environments around the world. It has been extensively studied over the last 100 years or so, and examination of the literature reveals three striking features: (1) the presence of populations in a wide range of environmental conditions; (2) large inter-population differences in abundance and life history patterns over large and small spatial scales; and (3) inter-annual variability in various aspects of its population dynamics. A. aurita is clearly a highly flexible species that can adapt to a wide range of environmental conditions. While various physiological and behavioural characteristics explain how A. aurita populations can take advantage of their surrounding environment, they do not explain what governs the observed temporal and spatial patterns of abundance, and the longevity or lifespan of populations. Understanding these features is necessary to predict how bloom populations might form. In a given habitat, the distribution and abundance of benthic marine invertebrates have been found to be maintained by four factors: larval recruitment (sexual reproduction), migration, mortality and asexual reproduction. The aims of this review are to determine the role of reproduction and life history strategies of the benthic and pelagic phases of A. aurita in governing populations of medusae, with special attention given to the dynamic interaction between A. aurita and its surrounding physical and biological environment.  相似文献

 The aim of this study was to compare mycorrhizal abundance and diversity in sites with different regimes of disturbance in a tropical rain forest at Los Tuxtlas, Veracruz, Mexico. Arbuscular mycorrhizal spores were quantified at two sites: closed canopy and gaps in the forest. Data were recorded during dry, rainy, and windy ("nortes") seasons. Spores of eight Glomus species, sporocarps of three Sclerocystis species, three species of Acaulospora and two of Gigaspora were found. Significant differences in the number of species and spores were found among seasons. The highest numbers of species and spores were observed during the dry season, with a marked decrease during the rainy season. Our results show that disturbance does not but seasonality does affect abundance and richness of mycorrhizal spores in this tropical wet forest. Accepted: 11 October 1998  相似文献

Home range sizes and spatial overlap of four sympatric squirrel species were investigated in a lowland dipterocarp forest in Malaysia using a radio‐tracking method. The population density of Callosciurus caniceps was highest and C. notatus was next highest, while C. nigrovittatus and Lariscus insignis were scarce. C. caniceps was larger than C. nigrovittatus and C. notatus while L. insignis was extremely small. For females, home range size was smaller in L. insignis than Callosciurus spp., which may support the body weight hypothesis: larger species have larger home ranges. Among the three Callosciurus species, female C. caniceps had the smallest home range. These differences were accounted for by habitat characteristics rather than by density or body weight; C. caniceps was dominant in bushy areas and used crowded small trees while C. notatus and C. nigrovittatus used large trees in the forest. In this study, home range size did not change seasonally; this differs from studies in temperate regions, possibly because food availability is much less variable among seasons in tropical rain forest. Home range overlap among heterospecific individuals was common but different species seemed to partition space by using different vertical levels of the forest. Consequently, the home range size and spatial overlap of sympatric squirrel species may be affected by habitat diversity in tropical rain forest.  相似文献

In subalpine forests near the forest limit on Mt. Fuji in central Japan, slush avalanches occasionally destroy forest-floor vegetation through an influx of volcanic gravel from bare upper sites. The vegetation structure of Larix kaempferiAbies veitchii forests near and distant from avalanche paths was investigated to determine the effects of forest-floor disturbance on successional processes. The Larix population in a forest near an avalanche path, where there had been signs of forest-floor disturbance by avalanches, had a discontinuous age structure with three age groups, indicating that Larix seedlings established under the Larix canopy after the forest-floor disturbance. In contrast, the Larix population in a forest distant from avalanche paths, where there had been no forest-floor disturbance, had a continuous age structure, with no plants younger than the 90-year-old trees, indicating that this population had established on bare ground over a long period. These data suggest that the primary requirement for the regeneration of L. kaempferi on the forest floor is a mineral substrate. Conversely, A. veitchii had a continuous age structure in both forests. However, forest-floor disturbances by avalanche(s) may exclude A. veitchii from the forest because A. veitchii is very sensitive to scoria deposition. In conclusion, forest-floor disturbance by avalanche(s) provides L. kaempferi with an opportunity to establish on the forest floor, resulting in the maintenance of Larix forests alongside avalanche paths in the upper subalpine area on Mt. 1. Levels of ash-free dry matter (AFDM) and chlorophyll a in epilithon, benthic participate organic matter (BPOM), invertebrate assemblage composition, and biomass of functional feeding groups were compared in winter and summer at forest and pasture sites in three Victorian streams. 2. Chlorophyll a concentrations of epilithon were significantly higher at pasture than forest sites in winter but not in summer while BPOM was not significantly greater at forest sites in either season. Epilithic biomass as AFDM did not show consistent differences between land uses or seasons. 3. Total biomass of invertebrates did not differ between forest and pasture sites but the biomass of shredders was significantly higher, and that of grazers significantly lower, at forest than pasture sites. A site shaded with an artificial canopy behaved as a forest site for grazers but as a pasture site for shredders. 4. Cluster analyses of invertebrate assemblages grouped pasture sites with forest sites on the same stream at the same season, indicating that assemblage composition was less influenced by land-use differences than by between-stream and seasonal differences. 5. Biomass of functional feeding groups appeared to be a more sensitive indicator of invertebrate assemblage response to land-use alteration than either species diversity/ richness measures, or multivariate assemblage composition measures.  相似文献
