The Australian scincid lizard Egernia stokesii lives in social groups and is infected with two nematode species: Pharyngodon tiliquae and Thelandros trachysauri. This study asked whether those nematodes affected levels of lizard activity in field populations. In a laboratory colony, application of a combination of ivermectin and fenbendazole reduced nematode egg count in lizard scats after 12 weeks. In the field, the same doses of those antihelminthic drugs were applied to lizards in six social groups across three populations, and a saline control was given to lizards in six adjacent groups. Observations showed significant changes in behaviour between the two groups developing over 2 months. Drug-treated lizards spent more time basking and moved about for longer times during observation sessions. The results suggest that nematode infection altered host behaviour and reduced fitness. No influence of social group size was detected on the impact of parasitic nematodes.  相似文献

Foraging behavior is often determined by the conflicting benefits of energy gain and the risk of mortality from predation or other causes. Theory predicts that animals should have lower activity levels when either the risk of predation or the availability of resources in the environment is high. We investigated the adjustment of the behavior of I. elegans larvae to predator presence (Anax imperator) and prey density (Daphnia sp.) and their interaction in a completely crossed factorial experiment in the lab and the effect of behavior on growth. The foraging activity of the I. elegans larvae was significantly reduced in the presence of a free-swimming predator but not a caged predator. Abdominal movements were significantly reduced at a low prey density. Growth was significantly reduced by the presence of a free swimming predator and low prey densities. These results provide evidence that these damselfly larvae adjust their behavior to the presence of predators to increase their survival at the expense of reduced growth and development.  相似文献

Many grasslands in the Chihuahuan Desert have transformed to shrublands dominated by creosotebush (Larrea tridentata). Grassland restoration efforts have been directed at controlling creosotebush by applying herbicide over large spatial scales. However, we have a limited understanding of how landscape-scale restoration affects biodiversity. We examined whether restoration treatments in southern New Mexico, USA have influenced the community structure of lizards, which are sensitive to shrub encroachment. We compared lizard community structure on 21 areas treated with herbicide from 7 to 29 years ago with paired untreated areas that were dominated by shrubs and matched by geomorphology, soils, and elevation. To examine mechanisms underlying responses to restoration, we tested whether the abundance of a grassland specialist, Aspidoscelis uniparens, depended on time since treatment, treatment area and isolation, and local habitat quality. Because lizards use rodent burrows as habitat, we tested whether community structure and A. uniparens abundance depended on the abundance of the keystone rodent, Dipodomys spectabilis. Treated areas had reduced shrub cover and increased grass cover compared to untreated areas. Lizard community composition differed strongly between areas, with four species responding to treatments. Divergence in community composition between treated–untreated pairs was greatest for old treatments (≥22 years), and community composition was influenced by D. spectabilis. In particular, the abundance of A. uniparens was greatest on old treatments with a high density of D. spectabilis. Overall, our results demonstrate lizard community structure responds to grassland restoration efforts, and keystone species can shape restoration outcomes. Reestablishment of keystone species may be a critical constraint on the recovery of animal biodiversity after habitat restoration.  相似文献

Transportation infrastructure is a main cause of environmental change in forest landscapes worldwide. In the Canary Islands, a dense road system fragment the native Canarian pine and laurel forests causing potential changes in population densities of endemic lacertid lizards (genus Gallotia). Our aim was to assess road edge effects on relative abundance patterns of the endemic Gallotia galloti in both forests. We also explored the species–habitat relationships in this road-fragmentation context. We found that lizard relative density in relation to road edges differed between forests. Lizards were more abundant along edges and leeward interior, but virtually absent from the interior of the windward laurel forest. In the pine forest, lizards were present at three distances from edge, with a net decrease in abundance from edge to interior. These patterns may be explained partly by differences in vegetation structure regarding road proximity in each forest that potentially affect the helio- and thigmothermic character of G. galloti, and thus its habitat use. A general suggestion of this study is that road margins create corridors that may be used by native lizards for dispersal through inhospitable forest matrix. The high road density in Tenerife may have negative implications for the conservation of the genetic variability of G. galloti. At the island scale, increased communication between lizard populations through road corridors might increase homogenization of the gene pool. Ecological processes in which this lizard plays important roles may also experience changes along road edges.  相似文献

The spatial distribution of plants (and other primarily sessile organisms) depends on the interplay between their ecological requirements and the spatial template set before, during, and after the dispersal process. In the case of animal‐dispersed plants, the spatial characteristics of animal behaviour during the seed dispersal process are likely to leave a lasting imprint on plant distribution. Here, we hypothesize that the activity patterns of the frugivorous lizard Podarcis lilfordi directly influence the spatial distribution of the fleshy‐fruited shrub Daphne rodriguezii. To evaluate this hypothesis, we first analysed lizard activity, following radio‐tracked lizards during the plant's fruiting period, and identified its main determinants at several spatial scales of habitat aggregation (from 12.5 to 150 m). We hypothesised that lizard activity depends on differential habitat features explaining its territory use plus habitat preferences associated with each movement bout. In a second step, the most important determinants of lizard activity plus the variables describing habitat structure were used to predict the presence of adult and juvenile plants. Predictability of lizard activity (based on AUC and Pearson regression coefficients) was higher at broad spatial‐scales of habitat aggregation (75 m). The two best predictors of lizard activity were the habitat features of and the distance to the core area (defined as the area enclosing the 0.50 cumulative probability of lizard locations). Plant presence was best predicted by models based on a combination of lizard activity and habitat features at local spatial scales (1.5 m). Best models included habitat features and lizard activity for adult plants, and local‐scale habitat features, the proximity of adult plants and lizard activity for juveniles. In both cases, most plants (50–60%) were located at ‘optimal sites’ (both favourable for lizards and with adequate habitat features), whereas a small fraction of them (3–10%) were located at dispersal‐limited sites (i.e. with adequate habitat features but suboptimal for lizards). Our results thus suggest that the interplay between lizard activity and local habitat features determines the spatial patterns of juvenile‐plant presence and leaves a lasting signature on adult‐plant distribution.  相似文献

Summary A quantitative EMG analysis is presented of the effects of deafferentation on the motor program for oviposition digging in the locust Locusta migratoria. We examined the activity of two groups of antagonistic muscles, the opener and closer muscles of the ventral ovipositor valves, in terms of the cycle frequency, burst duration, and relative burst onset times. There were no significant differences between the pattern frequency produced in intact, semi-intact, or deafferented animals within 10 min of the onset of the pattern. Over time, however, the pattern in deafferented animals showed a significant decrease in frequency, which it did not do in intact or semi-intact animals. Seven out of 10 deafferented preparations ceased producing the digging rhythm within 35 min of onset, but none of the semi-intact preparations did so. Mechanosensory hairs cover the ovipositor valves, and are in a position to supply sensory input to the digging pattern generator during the natural behaviour. When nerves carrying sensory axons from these hairs were electrically-stimulated tonically, the motor pattern was restored in deafferented animals. The effects of the stimulation outlasted the stimulation itself for several minutes, and could be repeated several times. We experimentally tested the indirect and direct effects of Amblyseius womersleyi on Tetranychus kanzawai. The presence of A. womersleyi indirectly reduced egg production of T. kanzawai by 25.9%, although this effect had less impact than direct egg predation. The mechanism of this indirect effect could be explained by behavioral changes in T. kanzawai females; in the presence of A. womersleyi, T. kanzawai females allocated more time to seeking refuge on webs at the expense of feeding on leaves.  相似文献

The newly described tick Amblyomma vikirri has a narrow host range, being found mainly on the Australian lizard, Egernia stokesii and rarely on another lizard, Tiliqua rugosa. Both hosts are in the family Scincidae. Larvae of A. vikirri were as successful in locating E. stokesii as T. rugosa from a range of release distances between 20 and 120 mm from the host. Over this range the proportion of ticks which successfully located hosts declined and the time taken by successful ticks to locate hosts increased with increasing release distance. From 60 mm, larvae of A. vikirri located four other lizard species from the families Scincidae and Agamidae and two non-living targets as successfully as they did E. stokesii. The only evidence that there was any host specificity in the searching behaviour of larvae of A. vikirri was that A. vikirri larvae spent less time paused and questing when they were searching for E. stokesii than when they were searching for T. rugosa. Aponomma hydrosauri, a tick which commonly infests T. rugosa but not E. stokesii, spent less time paused and questing when it was searching for T. rugosa than when it was searching for E. stokesii. However, the results overall suggest that the narrow host range of A. vikirri cannot be explained by any ability of the larvae of that species to discriminate between their natural host and other reptile species.  相似文献

We present a novel approach for examining the complex feeding behavior of a filter feeder at a previously unexploited scale. A Daphnia lives in a viscous environment and thus creates a feeding current with a distinct laminar inflow and a repetitive pulsed outflow. We propose that by treating the feeding apparatus as a black box, and using the pulsed outflow current as a surrogate to the inside working of the apparatus, we can calculate feeding rate in near real time. The structure of the outflow is interpreted as a direct representation of the organism’s response to its environment. Therefore, we examine how the work performed by an organism’s feeding apparatus is altered according to environmental factors and metabolic demands. Our approach is an integration of optical (Schlieren system) and electrochemical (chronoamperometry) techniques that allow for real time visualization and temporal analysis of flow systems, respectively. As electrochemistry requires a tracer chemical, we employed low dopamine concentrations (≤ 1mM), and tested the effect of dopamine on the heart rate and swimming of Daphnia. It appears that dopamine free in solution at concentrations below 10 mM has no adverse effects on the organism, and all observed differences in Daphnia feeding behavior were due to environmental or metabolic factors. The feeding nature of daphnids in the presence or absence of food, and differences between the sexes is reported. Our results indicate that in the absence of food a Daphnia has a strict and repetitive feeding behavior with short delays between pumping actions. However, in the presence of food this behavior becomes complex, with increased delays between pumps, perhaps designed to maximize feeding efficiency. Our observations demonstrate that males have a higher appendage beat frequency than females under identical conditions. We hypothesize that the difference may be dictated by metabolic demand, as a male spends more time actively seeking a mate. The application of electrochemistry to the study of Daphnia feeding behavior is an improvement over current methods for its near real time quantification of behavioral response, its versatile application under varying environmental conditions and its extreme sensitivity to changes in the organism’s feeding behavior. This technique is a valuable addition to the current tools available for studying Daphnia feeding behavior and will allow us to learn more about the interactions of an organism with its environment. The adrenal gland regulates metabolism and maintains normal electrolyte balance. Adrenal hormones are equivalent in all vertebrates; the chromaffin tissue produces adrenaline and noradrenaline and the steroidogenic tissue produces most of the steroid hormones present in mammals. Podarcis sicula belongs to the Squamata family of lizards and it is the most abundant lizard species in southern Italy. This species shows a reproductive annual cycle and the presence of seasonal variations in the activity of the hypothalamus-hypophyseal-thyroid axis. To investigate the existence of an annual cycle of lizard adrenal gland, we have measured plasma concentrations of corticosterone, ACTH, noradrenaline and adrenaline. We have shown that corticosterone rapidly increased from January to March to reach a peak value that persisted until July, then, it slowly decreased until December. ACTH levels increased from January to May and slowly decreased from July to December. Noradrenaline levels were higher in March and then decreased until December. On the contrary, adrenaline levels increased from March to July and slowly decreased until December. Our results demonstrate the existence of an annual cycle of the lizard adrenal gland activity. This is very interesting because its activity is important to rightly regulate the reproductive status of the Podarcis sicula lizard.  相似文献

In leaf-cutting ants, workers are expected to excavate the nest at a soil depth that provides suitable temperatures, since the symbiotic fungus cultivated inside nest chambers is highly dependent on temperature for proper growth. We hypothesize that the different nesting habits observed in Acromyrmex leaf-cutting ants in the South American continent, i.e. superficial and subterranean nests, depend on the occurrence, across the soil profile, of the temperature range preferred by workers for digging. To test this hypothesis, we first explored whether the nesting habits in the genus Acromyrmex are correlated with the prevailing soil temperature regimes at the reported nest locations. Second, we experimentally investigated whether Acromyrmex workers engaged in digging use soil temperature as a cue to decide where to excavate the nest. A bibliographic survey of nesting habits of 21 South American Acromyrmex species indicated that nesting habits are correlated with the soil temperature regimes: the warmer the soil at the nesting site, the higher the number of species inhabiting subterranean nests, as compared to superficial nests. For those species showing nesting plasticity, subterranean nests occurred in hot soils, and superficial nests in cold ones. Experimental results indicated that Acromyrmex lundi workers use soil temperature as an orientation cue to decide where to start digging, and respond to rising and falling soil temperatures by moving to alternative digging places, or by stopping digging, respectively. The soil temperature range preferred for digging, between 20°C and maximally 30.6°C, matched the range at which colony growth would be maximized. It is suggested that temperature-sensitive digging guides digging workers towards their preferred range of soil temperature. Workers’ thermopreferences lead to a concentration of digging activity at the soil layers where the preferred range occurs, and therefore, to the construction of superficial nests in cold soils, and subterranean ones in hot soils. The adaptive value of the temperature-related nesting habits, and the temperature-sensitive digging, is further discussed.  相似文献

For subterranean rodents, searching for food by extension of the tunnel system and maintenance of body temperature are two of the most important factors affecting their life underground. In this study we assess the effect of ambient temperature on energetics and thermoregulation during digging in Ctenomys talarum. We measured o2 during digging and resting at ambient temperature (Ta) below, within, and above thermoneutrality. Digging metabolic rate was lowest at Ta within the thermoneutral zone and increased at both lower and higher temperatures, but body temperature (Tb) remained constant at all Tas. Below thermoneutrality, the cost of digging and thermoregulation are additive. Heat production for thermoregulation would be compensated by heat produced as a by-product of muscular activity during digging. Above thermoneutrality, conduction would be an important mechanism to maintain a constant Tb during digging.  相似文献

We collected data on diet and daytime activity budget, and investigated the phenology of food trees and food abundance for a group of Rhinopithecus roxellana on the East Ridge of Yuhuangmiao in the Qinling Mountains from November 2001 to December 2003. We calculated the seasonal activity budget using data collected by scan sampling from 84 full-day observations (winter 16, spring 18, summer 28, autumn 22 days). During scan sampling we recorded behavioral states, and the food items and species consumed. The subjects consumed 84 plant species, including trees and shrubs of 29 families, and lichens. Food species varied seasonally. The overall diet of R. roxellana consisted of 29.4% fruit/seeds, 29.0% lichens, 24.0% leaves, 11.1% bark, 4.2% buds, 1.3% twigs and 1.0% unidentified items. Because the abundance of different food items varied seasonally, the monkeys had to shift their major food items seasonally. The annual activity budget of R. roxellana was 36.2% time spent resting, 35.8% feeding, 22.9% moving, and 5.1% other behavior. Seasonal changes in activity budget were observed. R. roxellana spent more time moving in autumn, when the quality of the food might be highest, and least time moving in winter when the food quality might be lowest. Thus, this type of monkey has a passive foraging strategy.  相似文献

Summary I examined the foraging behavior during the breeding and non-breeding seasons, May and July 1986, of the fringe-toed lizard Uma inornata (Iguanidae). During the breeding season males differ from females in their diet and in their foraging time strategy, males exhibiting time minimization and females energy maximization. In May, plant associated foods were selectively eaten. Males concentrated on flowers, a readily available quick energy food, which reduced foraging time and increased time for reproductive activities. Time budgets indicate that males spend over twice as much time in the open and in movement in May than do females. Females at this time restrict their activities to the cover of perennial bushes, and feed primarily on plant foods (flowers and arthropods). Energy maximization appears to be maintained by both sexes in the non-breeding season when food resources diminished to one-half of those in the breeding season. The lizards were less selective in their July feeding habits, broadening their diets to include ground-dwelling arthropods and foliage. Predation by these lizards follows a wait-ambush mode of foraging.  相似文献

Studies were conducted on the host searching behavior of the larval parasitoid Cotesia sesamiae (Cameron) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) and the pupal parasitoid Dentichasmias busseolae Heinrich (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), both of which attack lepidopteran (Crambidae, Noctuidae) cereal stemborers. The behavior of D. busseolae was observed in a diversified habitat that consisted of stemborer host plants (maize, Zea mays L. and sorghum, Sorghum bicolor (L). Moench (Poaceae)) and a non-host plant (molasses grass, Melinis minutiflora Beauv. (Poaceae)), while C. sesamiae was observed separately on host plants and molasses grass. In previous olfactometer studies, C. sesamiae was attracted to molasses grass volatiles while hboxD. busseolae was repelled. The aim of the present study was to investigate the influence of molasses grass on close-range foraging behavior of the parasitoids in an arena that included infested and uninfested host plants. Dentichasmias busseolae strongly discriminated between host and non-host plants, with female wasps spending most of the time on infested host plants and least time on molasses grass. Likewise, C. sesamiae spent more time on uninfested and infested host plants than it did on molasses grass in single choice bioassays. While on infested plants, the wasps spent more time foraging on the stem, the site of damage, than on other areas of the plant. Overall, the results indicate that presence of the non-host plant does not hinder close range foraging activities of either parasitoid.  相似文献

The behavior of wild and hatchery-reared red tilefish Branchiostegus japonicus was analyzed using two different methods: video observation and acoustic telemetry tracking. In the laboratory, digging and swimming activity of seven wild and five hatchery-reared fish were recorded for 2–4 days in an experimental aquarium and related to changes in light intensity. The activity of wild individuals increased with light intensity, while hatchery-reared individuals were active during both day and night. In the field, 18 wild and 9 hatchery-reared fish were released and tracked using an acoustic telemetry system during the winter and the summer in Maizuru Bay, Kyoto (Japan). Seven wild and three hatchery-reared fish settled within 2 km of the release point for 21–200 days whilst 11 wild and 6 hatchery-reared fish were detected in the central part of the bay within 13 days. The settled fish demonstrated a diel pattern of behavior; most of them probably stayed outside their burrows in the daytime but inside their burrows during the nighttime. During the winter wild fish tended to stay near the release site for longer periods than the hatchery-reared fish. However, in summer the hatchery-reared fish tended to remain close to the release site for longer than the wild fish. Based on these two experiments, we suggest that the activity of wild red tilefish respond to changes in low levels of light intensity (0–0.1 μmol m−2 s−1) at dawn and display a diel behavior. Hatchery-reared fish may differ from wild fish with regard to their behavior, response to water temperature and light conditions. Most studies on chitinase activity in lizards have been concerned with Palaearctic (European) and Laurasian (Middle Eastern and Asian) taxa. Several genera of Old World lizards, Anguis, Uromastix, Chamaeleo and Lacerta, have been shown to possess chitinolytic activity. To date, only one New World lizard, Anolis carolinensis, has been reported to exhibit chitinolytic activity. In the present study, chitinase activity was characterized in a second New World taxon, Sceloporus undulatus garmani, a New World, phrynosomatid lizard. Chitinolytic activity was measured by incubating tissue extracts with a radioactive chitin substrate, acetyl-[H3]chitin and determining acid soluble radioactivity as an estimate for chitin hydrolysis. Chitinolytic activity was present in stomach, small intestine and pancreas extracts, with the stomach and pancreas having the highest specific activities. Chitinolytic activity was higher at pH 4.5 than at pH 7.5. The stomach chitinase is immunologically similar to the gastric chitinase previously described for rainbow trout. Western blot analysis showed anti-chitinase cross-reactivity in the extracts of the stomach, but no cross-reactivity in the pancreatic or intestinal extracts, suggesting different isoforms of chitinase. There was no detected lysozyme activity (less than 0.01 mg/ml lysozyme) present in the extracts of the stomach, small intestine and pancreas. The localization of chitinolytic activity in S. u. garmani is in agreement with earlier reptilian reports on the distribution of chitinase.  相似文献

Understanding the impact of agriculture on biodiversity is critical for effective conservation management. Our goal was to determine the impact of agricultural disturbance on the lizard fauna of Los Haitises National Park and the surrounding region in the Dominican Republic. This region has a history of extensive agricultural disturbance followed by abrupt abandonment. Abundance and diversity were surveyed in six habitats: relatively undisturbed hilltop (mogote), four habitats disturbed by agriculture (pasture, oil palm plantation, cacao plantation, conuco or home garden), and one forested habitat. Three of these habitats (pasture, cacao plantation, conuco) were also examined at different stages of activity or abandonment. Glue-trap grids were used to sample each habitat. In general, species richness was lower in more heavily or recently disturbed habitats. Richness was lowest in active agricultural habitats where only 54% of the region's lizard species were detected. Notably, agricultural systems differed considerably in their ability to support a diverse lizard assemblage. Abandoned agricultural habitats had slightly higher richness than their active counterparts, but still contained only 69% of the region's species. By contrast, nearly every native species, including several never observed in agriculturally disturbed habitats, were detected on the undisturbed hilltops (mogotes). These mogotes may have served as refugees for species that could not tolerate disturbance when the region was being heavily exploited for agriculture. Overall, our results suggest that the continued protection of the park, and its mogotes in particular, will be required to maintain the region's lizard diversity.  相似文献

Commensal behavior of jack mackerel Trachurus japonicus (Temminck & Schlegel) with jellyfishes has been widely observed but its ecological function is still unclear. The goal of the present research is to examine the function of association behavior with jellyfish in the laboratory and in field observations with an emphasis on ontogenetic changes. In the laboratory, jack mackerel juveniles (mean standard length (SL) = 11, 19, 38, and 55 mm) were placed in 500-l polycarbonate tanks with two live moon jellyfish, Aurelia aurita (Linné), and one artificial jellyfish made of silicon. Association behavior with either live or artificial jellyfish was visually observed under the following conditions: control, presence of a predator model, before and after feeding live Artemia, 1 h and 3 h after feeding, and at night. Jack mackerel at 11 mm SL associated with both the moon jellyfish and artificial jellyfish, unrelated to the presence of a predator model or feeding. Juveniles at 19 mm associated with moon jellyfish only in the presence of a predator model. Larger juveniles associated with moon jellyfish at 1 h and 3 h after feeding. Thus the ecological function of association was proposed to develop first from school formation, next as a hiding place from predators, and then as a food source. Underwater observations of jack mackerel associating with giant jellyfish Nemopilema nomurai (Kishinouye) in two different areas in the Sea of Japan supported this hypothesis. High predation pressure from benthic piscivorous fishes in the southern area (Tsushima) may encourage association with jellyfish, whereas pressure from pelagic predators in the northern area (Maizuru) may encourage settlement to rocky reef habitats in temperate waters. 栖息地退化会使环境中蜥蜴的可利用食物资源发生改变。采用剖胃法对内蒙古自治区鄂尔多斯市准格尔旗和达拉特旗地区采集的草原沙蜥样本进行了食性分析。对固定沙丘、半固定沙丘和流动沙丘三类样地中77个实胃样本的652只(套)食物进行鉴定和分析的结果表明,这些食物主要为节肢动物,分为35类,隶属3纲11目32科;也在少部分个体(4.69%)的胃容物中发现少量(1.95%)植物碎片。上述三类栖息地中,草原沙蜥对蚁科、蚜科、瓢虫科、叶蝉科和茧蜂科昆虫均有较大的捕食比例;但相比固定沙区栖息地,草原沙蜥在半固定及流动沙丘中增减的食物种类均比较多,导致草原沙蜥在流动沙区与其他两类样地之间有较大的食物相异性。从固定沙丘、半固定沙丘到流动沙丘,随栖息地荒漠化程度的增加,草原沙蜥捕食食物类群的丰富度逐步减少,辛普森优势度指数相应地下降,但营养生态位宽度、香农威纳多样性指数和皮洛均匀性指数却在流动沙丘栖息地上明显增大。这表明鄂尔多斯地区的草原沙蜥是以捕食昆虫等节肢动物为主、兼食极少量植物的杂食性动物。栖息地荒漠化所致的环境变化显著地影响草原沙蜥的食物组成,使其觅食的食物种类逐步减少。  相似文献
