Summary The undesirable side effects in lettuce crops grown on soils sterilised at 100°C, do not occur on soils sterilised with steam-air mixtures at 70°C. Both in pot experiments and in field trials, significantly higher yields were obtained on soil sterilised at 70°C than on soil sterilised at 100°C. In the pot experiments the average head weight of lettuce obtained from eight soil types was about 20% greater on the soil heated to 70°C than on the soil heated to 100°C. A similar increase in yield was found in the field trials conducted over two years. Apart from increased weight, lettuce grown on soil sterilised at 70°C was of significantly better quality with improved shape of head and showing less susceptibility to tipburn and marginal leaf scorch. In the field experiments mentioned tomatoes followed the lettuce crops. The reaction of cucumbers to soil sterilisation at different temperatures was investigated in another field experiment. No significant differences in yield resulting from the treatments were found in tomatoes and cucumbers. The manganese content of the crops grown on soil sterilised at 100°C was usually considerably higher than on soil sterilised at 70°C. This was the case particularly with lettuce which showed some very great differences on some soil types.  相似文献

Hatchling painted turtles (Chrysemys picta) were placed individually into artificial nests constructed in jars of damp soil and then were cooled slowly to temperatures between-7.7 and-12.7 °C. Distinct exotherms were recorded in all jars when water in the soil began to freeze at temperatures between-0.9 and-2.4 °C. A second (animal) exotherm was subsequently detected in some of the jars when water in hatchlings also began to freeze. An animal exotherm occurred in the temperature records for all 23 hatchlings that died in tests terminating at temperatures between-7.7 and-10.8 °C, but no such exotherm was apparent in the temperature records for the 23 turtles that survived these treatments. Moreover, the 4 hatchlings that produced exotherms in tests terminating between-11.5 and-12.7 °C failed to survive, but 5 of 7 hatchlings that produced no exotherm in these tests also died. Thus, turtles that die at subzero temperatures above-11 °C apparently succumb to freezing when ice propagates across their integument from the frozen soil, but animals that die at temperatures below-11 °C generally perish from some other cause. These findings indicate that hatchling painted turtles overwintering inside their shallow, subterranean nests survive exposure to subzero temperatures by avoiding freezing instead of by tolerating freezing.  相似文献

The availability of phosphorus (P) in lakes is dependent on the sorption characteristics of the underlying sediments. Temperature is a crucial factor affecting the P sorption in sediments. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of temperature on sorption of P by sediments from two eutrophic lakes. The study was carried out using short-term batch experiments at 4, 20 and 30 °C. Phosphorus sorption kinetics, isotherms, fractionation and desorption were investigated. The P sorption was dependent on sediment type and temperature (p < 0.001). The Mei sediments showed a higher sorption rate and sorption capacity than Hua sediments. The P sorption kinetics were best described by a pseudo second order model (R2 > 0.97). Activation energies derived from the kinetics rate constant indicated that P sorption onto the two sediments was controlled by a diffusion process. For both sediments, Freundlich model fit the P sorption isotherms well and the calculated apparent sorption heat was 6.37 kJ mol−1 for Mei sediments and 8.67 kJ mol−1 for Hua sediments. This indicated that P sorption onto both sediments was endothermic. Adding P significantly increased the soluble and loosely bound P (S/L-P), aluminum-bound P (Al-P) and iron-bound P (Fe-P) (p < 0.05). The amount of Al-P and Fe-P was markedly higher at 30 °C than at 4 °C (p < 0.05). Subsequent P desorption indicated that adsorbed P was highly labile, in particular for Hua sediment. The degree of P mobility that occurred during sediment sorption was inversely related to the temperature at the time of sorption. A significant relationship (R2 = 0.978) between phosphorus sorption maximum and oxalate-extractable Fe and Al at different temperatures reflects that the amorphous contents of Fe and Al are responsible for the temperature effect on P sorption.  相似文献

Summary Effects of P fertilizers on growth of Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii var.menziesii (Mirb.) Franco.) seedlings were examined in pots and nursery beds. In pot experiments levels of P equivalent to 300 kg/ha were adequate for maximum growth over 14–18 weeks and resulted in available soil P levels of 80 ppm after 15 weeks' growth. Maximum growth in pots was obtained with shoot P concentrations of 0.18%–0.20%, with higher values at lower temperatures, but the optimum concentration for one-year old (1-0) nursery seedlings was 0.16% P. Growth of seedlings was greatly restricted at a soil temperature of 5°C and an air temperature of 12°C. At a soil temperature of 10°C and an air temperature of 14°C seedling P requirement was greater than at soil and air temperatures of 20°C.Comparison showed that monammonium phosphate was more effective than calcium superphosphate in stimulating growth in pots and nursery. Triple superphosphate was also effective in the nursery. Diammonium phosphate, potassium dihydrogen phosphate and phosphoric acid had no advantages as P sources in the nursery. Available P levels of 100–130 ppm, in the loamy sand and sandy loam nurseries studied, and needle P concentrations of 0.18%, when sampled in October, were associated with maximum growth of two-year old (2-0) seedlings.P fertilization decreased root/shoot ratio, but did not alter the allometric relationship of shoot to root. Improving P status from a low level increased root growth capacity in 2-0 seedlings and P fertilization of potted seedlings increased dry weight/height ratio. Uptakes per seed bed ha of 236 kg N, 31 kg P, 81 kg K and 73 kg Ca by 2-0 seedlings were comparable with, or greater than, uptake rates of agricultural crops. Recoveries of 6–11% of P from fertilizer were recorded in the nursery.  相似文献

Twelve lactating Holstein cows in 2nd lactation were allocated randomly, six each, to two feeding treatments: high concentrate (1 kg dairy concentrate to 2 kg milk produced) and low concentrate (1 kg dairy concentrate to 4 kg milk produced) from 7 to 106 days postcalving. Forage and water were provided adalibitum. Milk and butter fat yields and rectal temperatures were examined in relation to 9 weather variables (minimum, maximum and mean temperatures, relative humidity, temperature-humidity index (THI), radiation, wind velocity and mean temperature of the previous day). Averages for milk yield, fat yield and rectal temperature were respectively 20.4 kg, 0.7 kg and 38.9°C for the high concentrate treatment and 18.4 kg, 0.6 kg and 38.6°C for the low concentrate treatment. Weather conditions accounted for 5.6%, 0.8% and 10.8% of the day to day variation in milk yield, fat yield and rectal remperature, respectively, for the high concentrate group and 29.4%, 9.7% and 0.6%, respectively, for the low concentrate group. Only measures of ambient temperature, especially mean temperature, were closely associated with these traits.  相似文献

The effect of soil moisture at different temperatures on root rot of wheat seedlings caused by Rhizoctonia solani AG-8 was studied in temperature controlled water tanks under glasshouse conditions. Four moisture levels (15, 30, 50 and 75% of soil water holding capacity at saturation which were equal to –10, –7, –5 and –3 kPa, respectively) were tested in tanks maintained 10, 15, 20 or 25 °C. The role of microbial activity in the effect of soil moisture and temperature on disease severity was also studied by including treatments of steam treated soil. Results showed that at soil moisture levels optimum for plant growth (50 and 75% WHC) disease was more severe at a lower temperature (10 °C), but under relatively dry conditions (15% WHC) disease levels were similar at all temperatures tested. In warm soils (20 and 25 °C) at high soil moisture levels (50 and 75% WHC), disease was more severe in steam treated soil than in non-steam treated soil, indicating that the suppression of disease in natural soil under these conditions was associated with high soil microbial activity.  相似文献

Summary Soil/air temperature differences were measured in 15 cm diameter plastic pots and in 30-cm diameter fibre pots under high radiant flux densities in a controlled environment cabinet. When there was no surface insulation or shading on the sides of the plastic pots, soil temperatures at –1 cm equilibrated at 7.5°C above air temperature. Reflective surface covering and shading on the sides of the pot reduced this difference to 2.4°C. In the fibre pots with reflective surface covering and side shading, soil equilibrium temperature was 1°C below air temperature, but equilibration time was 8 to 9 hours following day/night temperature changes.  相似文献

Fast pyrolysis of bagasse pretreated by sulfuric acid was conducted in a fixed bed reactor to prepare levoglucosenone (LGO), a very important anhydrosugar for organic synthesis. The liquid yield and LGO yield were studied at temperatures from 240 to 350 °C and sulfuric acid loadings from 0.92 to 7.10 wt.%. An optimal LGO yield of 7.58 wt.% was obtained at 270 °C with a sulfuric acid pretreatment concentration of 0.05 M (corresponding to 4.28 wt.% sulfuric acid loading). For comparison, microcrystalline cellulose pretreated by 0.05 M sulfuric acid solution was pyrolyzed at temperature from 270 °C to 320 °C, and bagasse loaded with 3-5 wt.% phosphoric acid was pyrolyzed at temperature from 270 °C to 350 °C. The highest yield of LGO from bagasse was 30% higher than that from microcrystalline cellulose, and treatment with sulfuric acid allowed a 21% higher yield than treatment with phosphoric acid.  相似文献

The effects of different temperatures and relative humidities (RHs) were tested on various reproductive parameters of Ornithodoros turicata, an argasid tick that inhabits gopher tortoise burrows in Florida, USA. The pre-oviposition, oviposition and incubation periods of the ticks decreased as temperature increased. These periods were also affected by the RH. The number of eggs oviposited was affected significantly by the combined effect of temperature and RH. Fewer eggs were laid by ticks in the 24°C regimes and the 27°C/95%RH regime compared to those in the other temperature/RH groups. There was an inverse relationship between the number of eggs oviposited and the percentage of hatched larvae that was correlated with the temperature and RH. Ticks reared at 27°C/90%RH and 30°C/90%RH laid more eggs than those reared in the other combinations of temperature and humidity but fewer larvae hatched from these eggs. The reproductive fitness index (RFI) values were highest in females held in the 24°C groups and the 30°C/95%RH group, although significantly more larvae hatched at the lower temperatures. The optimum reproductive conditions for O. turicata under laboratory conditions appear to be 24°C and 90–95%RH. While mating occurred at all temperatures, none of the females laid eggs at 22°C. The ticks may move preferentially to low temperatures when not feeding to remain above the critical equilibrium humidity and/or below the critical metabolic level necessary for prolonged survival. However, most female ticks oviposited after 45 days when moved to 27°C/95%RH. Ornithodoros turicata females may have a limited capability to delay oviposition until an optimal microenvironment for egg deposition can be located in the burrow.  相似文献

Peanut stem and pod temperatures of plants growing in irrigated, drought, drought-heated soil, and drought-cooled soil treatments were determined near the end of the growing season. Mean soil temperatures of the treatments during this period were 21.5°, 25.5°, 30° and 20 °C, respectively. Peanut stem temperatures in all drought treatments reached a maximum of ca. 40 °C and for 6–7 h each day were as much as 10 °C warmer than irrigated peanut stems. Pod temperatures in drought-heated soil and drought treatments were ca. 34 °C and 30 °C, respectively, for several hours each day. As pod temperatures approached the optimum for A. flavus growth (ca. 35 °C), the proportion of kernels colonized and aflatoxin concentrations increased. Increased plant temperature without accompanying pod temperature increases (drought-cooled soil) resulted in colonization percentages and aflatoxin concentrations only slightly higher than those of the irrigated peanuts.  相似文献

Wing-beat frequency of 2-week-old male Periplaneta americana cockroaches was measured during tethered flight at ambient temperatures from 19 to 35°C and 50 and 95% r.h. Between 19 and 27°C the frequency increased at a nearly constant rate (0·6 Hz/deg at 50% r.h.; 0·7 Hz/deg at 95% r.h.), but the rate of increase decreased markedly between 27 and 35°C. This decline differed from results of past investigations of wing-beat frequency for this species. Wing-beat frequencies at 95% r.h. were significantly higher than those at 50% r.h. for ambient temperatures between 27 and 35°C. reductions in wing-beat frequency at high temperatures and differences in wing-beat frequency between 50 and 95% r.h. may reflect decreases in internal thoracic temperature resulting from cuticular water loss.  相似文献

It is important to understand the effects of environmental conditions during plant growth on longevity and temperature response of pollen. Objectives of this study were to determine the influence of growth temperature and/or carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration on pollen longevity and temperature response of peanut and grain sorghum pollen. Plants were grown at daytime maximum/nighttime minimum temperatures of 32/22, 36/26, 40/30 and 44/34 °C at ambient (350 μmol mol−1) and at elevated (700 μmol mol−1) CO2 from emergence to maturity. At flowering, pollen longevity was estimated by measuring in vitro pollen germination at different time intervals after anther dehiscence. Temperature response of pollen was measured by germinating pollen on artificial growth medium at temperatures ranging from 12 to 48 °C in incubators at 4 °C intervals. Elevated growth temperature decreased pollen germination percentage in both crop species. Sorghum pollen had shorter longevity than peanut pollen. There was no influence of CO2 on pollen longevity. Pollen longevity of sorghum at 36/26 °C was about 2 h shorter than at 32/22 °C. There was no effect of growth temperature or CO2 on cardinal temperatures (Tmin, Topt, and Tmax) of pollen in both crop species. The Tmin, Topt, and Tmax identified at different growth temperatures and CO2 levels were similar at 14.9, 30.1, and 45.6 °C, respectively for peanut pollen. The corresponding values for sorghum pollen were 17.2, 29.4, and 41.7 °C. In conclusion, pollen longevity and pollen germination percentage was decreased by growth at elevated temperature, and pollen developed at elevated temperature and/or elevated CO2 did not have greater temperature tolerance.  相似文献

Phosphorus fixation in lake sediments using LaCl3-modified clays   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Fourteen types of clay, including soils and sediments from Lake Taihu, were modified by LaCl3, and their abilities of phosphorus (P) sorption (the total P up-taken) and fixation (the unleachable P retained in modified clays) were investigated. Results showed that P sorption rates of LaCl3-modified clays were all higher than 90%, while the fixation rates were raised from 3–14% to 52–95%. Kaolinite was selected to study the pH effect on P sorption and desorption of La3+ from the modified clays. In the pH range of 4–8, P sorption on LaCl3-modified kaolinite could reach over 80%, with a maximum of 97% at pH 5. The desorption rate of La3+ decreased with the increase of pH, which was lower than <0.006% at pH > 6.12. This study may provide a solution for internal P pollution from lake sediments.  相似文献

The contents of two bioactive compounds (polyphenols and flavonoids) and their antioxidant and enzyme activities were determined in the leaves of six lettuce (Latuca sativa L.) cultivars subjected to 4 different day/night temperatures for 6 weeks. The total polyphenol and anthocyanin contents and the corresponding antioxidant activities were the highest at 13/10 °C and 20/13 °C, followed by 25/20 °C and 30/25 °C. The enzymatic activities of polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) were also the highest at low day/night temperatures, but the peroxidase (POD) activity was decreased at low day/night temperatures and increased at high day/night temperatures. The most significant positive correlation existed between anthocyanin content and PPO activity, total polyphenols and their antioxidant activities. The results showed that at relatively low temperatures, lettuce plants have a high antioxidant and enzymatic status. These results provide additional information for the lettuce growers.  相似文献

Summary Extreme temperatures near the soil surface, which can reach 70°C at the main study site in the northwestern Sonoran Desert, markedly affect seedling survival. Computer simulations indicated that for the rather spherical barrel cactus Ferocactus acanthodes (Lem.) Britt. & Rose the maximum surface temperature decreased 8°C and the minimum temperature increased 3°C as the seedling height was increased from 1 mm up to 50 mm. Simulated changes in shortwave and longwave irradiation alone showed that shading could decrease the maximum temperature by about 5°C for the common desert agave, Agave deserti Engelm., and raise the minimum 1°C. Actual field measurements on seedlings of both species, where shading would affect local air temperatures and wind speeds in addition to irradiation, indicated that shading decreased the average maximum surface temperature by 11°C in the summer and raised the minimum temperature by 3°C in winter.Seedlings grown at day/iight air temperatures of 30°C/20°C tolerated low temperatures of about -7°C and high temperatures of about 56°C, as measured by the temperature where stain uptake by chlorenchyma cells was reduced 50%. Seedling tolerance to high temperatures increased slightly with age, and F. acanthodes was more tolerant than A. deserti. Even taking the acclimation of high temperature tolerance into account (2.7°C increase per 10°C increase in temperature), seedlings of A. deserti would not be expected to withstand the high temperatures at exposed sites, consistent with previous observations that these seedlings occur only in protected microhabitats. Based primarily on greater high temperature acclimation (4.3°C per 10°C), seedlings of F. acanthodes have a greater high temperature tolerance and can just barely survive in exposed sites. Wide ranges in photoperiod had little effect on the thermal sensitivities of either species. When drought increased the chlorenchyma osmotic pressure from about 0.5 MPa to 1.3 MPa, seedlings of both species became about 2°C less tolerant of high temperatures, which would be nonadaptive in a desert environment, and 2°C more tolerant of low temperatures, which also occurs for other species. In conclusion, seedlings of A. deserti and F. acanthodes could tolerate tissue temperatures over 60°C when acclimated to high temperatures and below -8°C when acclimated to low temperatures. However, the extreme environment adjacent to desert soil requires sheltered microhabitats to protect the plants from high temperature damage and also to protect them from low temperature damage at their upper elevational limits.  相似文献

Waxy maize starch in an aqueous sulfuric acid solution (3.16 M, 14.7% solids) was hydrolyzed for 2–6 days, either isothermally at 40 °C or 4 °C, or at cycled temperatures of 4 and 40 °C (1 day each). The starch hydrolyzates were recovered as precipitates after centrifuging the dispersion (10,000 rpm, 10 min). The yield of starch hydrolyzates depended on the hydrolysis temperature and time, which varied from 6.8% to 78%. The starch hydrolyzed at 40 °C or 4/40 °C exhibited increased crystallinity determined by X-ray diffraction analysis, but melted in broader temperature range (from 60 °C to 110 °C). However, the starch hydrolyzed at 4 °C displayed the crystallinity and melting endotherm similar to those of native starch. The starch hydrolyzates recovered by centrifugation were re-dispersed in water (15% solids), and the dispersion was treated by an ultrasonic treatment (60% amplitude, 3 min). The ultrasonication effectively fragmented the starch hydrolyzates to nanoparticles. The hydrolyzates obtained after 6 days of hydrolysis were more resistant to the ultrasonication than those after 2 or 4 days, regardless of hydrolysis temperatures. The starch nanoparticles could be prepared with high yield (78%) and crystallinity by 4 °C hydrolysis for 6 days followed by ultrasonication. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the starch nanoparticles had globular shapes with diameters ranging from 50 to 90 nm.  相似文献

Seed-eating ants could have a significant effect on plant communities in deserts and semiarid zones. This effect is mediated through spatial and temporal foraging patterns, and seed selection within patches. Foraging patterns of harvester ants in South American deserts are almost unknown. The purpose of this work is to determine the temporal variations in the activity levels of Pogonomyrmex pronotalis and P. rastratus in the central Monte desert, and how these patterns may be related to abiotic factors, particularly to soil temperature. Activity levels and soil surface temperature were recorded at hourly intervals in five colonies for each species during the activity season (October, December, February, and April) in both 1999–2000 and 2000–2001 periods (except for October 1999). Surface ant activity starts in October, increases between December and February, and then ceases by April. Surface ant activity is diurnal throughout the season and usually has a unique peak during midday in October and April, and two peaks in the morning and the afternoon from December to February. The proportion of the activity budget devoted to nest's maintenance activity was similar for both species. Activity levels of foraging workers tended to be higher in P. pronotalis than in P. rastratus. P. pronotalis is active between 20 and 59°C, with higher levels of activity between 35 and 45°C, whereas P. rastratus shows activity between 18 and 58°C, with higher levels of activity between 30 and 40°C. Our results suggest that temporal changes in surface activity respond mainly to soil temperature fluctuations. However, at intermediate temperatures (those probably encompassing the thermal tolerance range of these ant species), temperature appears not to be a good predictor of daily and seasonal activity fluctuations.  相似文献

Reversibility of phosphorus sorption by ferruginous nodules   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Ferruginous nodules sorb significant amounts of available soil and fertiliser phosphate. The effect of this sorption on phosphorus availability of an agricultural soil was tested by sequential extraction and by exhaustive cropping with millet (Pennisetum typhoides) in a greenhouse trial following fertilisation of the original soil containing 70% nodules and of prepared samples containing various mixes of separated soil fines and nodules. Phosphorus sorption maxima by the soil fines and nodules were 190 mg kg−1 and 380 mg kg−1 respectively. Samples of fines and nodules which had sorbed 110 and 194 mg kg−1 were submitted to 8 successive extractions with 0.01 M KCl, after which P desorption amounted to 117 mg kg−1 and 103 mg kg−1 respectively. Hysteresis between sorption and desorption was negligible for the soil fines and increased with increasing nodule content of the samples. In the greenhouse experiment, P uptake at the first cropping was highest in the soil fines at all levels of phosphorus applied. Subsequent croppings, however, showed higher P uptake in the concretionary soils. These results indicate a higher initial P release from the soil fines with cropping followed by an earlier exhaustion of phosphorus. At the end of the greenhouse experiment, yields were low in spite of the large quantities of P still remaining in the soils. Phosphorus fractionation showed that, of the P left in the soil after cropping 20% was in labile, 29% in Fe or Al-associated, and 51% in low-availability forms.  相似文献

Summary At temperatures of 20°, 30°, 40°, 50° and 60°C in a Gangetic alluvial soil (G soil, pH 7.6) N-mineralization and nitrification increased with temperature up to 40°C and mineralized N accumulated entirely as nitrate. At 50° and 60°C mineralized N was relatively low and no nitrification occurred. In the Red soil (R soil, pH 5.2) mineralized N increased with temperature up to 40°C, was somewhat less at 50°C and was at a maximum at 60°C. Nitrification was maximum at 30°C but did not occur at 50° and 60°C. In the G soil C-mineralization increased considerably with temperature, whilst in the R soil there were only small differences due to temperature.  相似文献

Summary Phosphate sorption isotherms were developed for five Philippine wetland rice soils using the conventional technique and a modified one. In the conventional method, P requirements of soils varied between 280 and 810 g P/g soil. In the modified method, they varied from 160 to 540 g P/g soil at 0.2 ppm P in solution. Soils with high P-sorption capacities had vermiculite and halloysite as the dominant clay minerals. Soil reduction by flooding decreased P-sorption by 28–70 percent at 0.2 ppm P in solution. The decrease in P-sorption due to soil reduction was greatest in a crystalline soil with vermiculite and halloysite as the dominant clay minerals and least in a soil with dominant X-ray amorphous silicates in the clay fraction.Desorption of freshly adsorbed P under reduction was greater in HCO 3 solution than in CaCl2 and it increased with level of applied P. Desorption patterns of freshly adsorbed P were similar to adsorption patterns but values of P in solution were lower at desorption. Soils varied with respect to desorption of freshly sorbed P. Desorption studies indicate that soils vary in intensity factor with respect to P and thus influence P availability to plants. Use of P-sorption and P-desorption data obtained under reduced soil condition was proposed for detecting P needs of submerged rice soils. Results of a pot study with IR36 at different levels of solution P (reduced) in one soil indicated a high degree of correlation between adjusted P levels and the measured growth parameters. About 0.12 ppm P in the soil solution or 0.46 ppm P desorbed in HCO 3 solution (equivalent to 100 mg P/kg soil) was adequate for near-maximum plant height, tiller production, total dry matter yield, plant P content, and total P uptake.  相似文献
