Scanning electron microscopy is used to describe the ultrastructure of morphological features related to feeding, locomotion, respiration, and pigmentation in second- and third-instar larvae of Ephydra hians (Ephydridae: Diptera). Using larvae fixed with the head extended, the ultrastructural details of the mandibles, maxillary papilli, and antennae are described for the first time. The larvae possess finger-like projections at the anterior spiracle and a distensible bifurcated siphon at the posterior spiracle. Slit-like openings are found on each. The second- and third-instar larvae can be differentiated on the basis of dorsal pigmentation associated with extensive patches of spines. The larvae have regional specializations in spine distribution, particularly on the ventral and dorsal body surfaces, and the prolegs. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

In mayfly nymphs of the genus Coloburiscoides, cell complexes with an osmoregulatory function (so-called chloride cells) are found in the integuments of the oral gills, the abdominal gills and gill filaments, the coxae and the thoracic sternites. The cuticle overlying each cell complex is a rigid circular plate which is known to be porous to colloidal lanthanum suspensions. The present study shows that the plate is composed only of the cuticulin and dense layers of the epicuticle. Both layers have substructures built of subunits on almost perfect hexagonal lattices. The lattice spacings are 53 and 9.5 nm for the dense layer and the cuticulin layer respectively. During moulting the apical plasma membrane of the chloride cell remains adpressed to the old porous plate. The new porous plate is formed from a new chloride cell which intrudes from the base of the integument. Throughout the moult small pores persist in the new and otherwise continuous cuticle to allow continuity of the cytoplasm of the apical and basal portions of the old chloride cell. It is thought that this phenomenon allows osmoregulatory function of the chloride cell complex to be maintained during the moult.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. An ecological investigation of the shore fly community was carried out in a salt marsh in Novosedly in the Czech Republic.
2. Sampling was carried out in 1997 and 1999 at approximately 14-day intervals during the seasonally active period, using yellow water traps.
3. Altogether 14 374 specimens of the family Ephydridae were collected (6040 in 1997 and 8334 in 1999), belonging to 48 shore fly species (37 in 1997 and 41 in 1999).
4. Community structure, species richness, species diversity, evenness, and seasonal and inter-annual changes were studied. The species richness, species diversity, and evenness of the shore fly community in 1999 were higher than in 1997 but inter-annual difference in species diversity was not statistically significant. Paracoenia fumosa , Scatella tenuicosta , and Hydrellia albilabris were found to be the most abundant species in both study years.
5. Seasonal patterns and phenology of the most abundant species are discussed. Hydrellia albilabris showed similar seasonal distribution of abundance in 1997 and 1999, whereas seasonal distribution of P. fumosa and S. tenuicosta varied between the study years. Paracoenia fumosa , Hydrellia griseola , H. albilabris , Scatella paludum , S. tenuicosta , and Philotelma defecta were found to occur throughout the whole observation period from March until November while Notiphila cinerea , Hydrellia ischiaca , and Psilopa nigritella appeared in a limited period only.  相似文献

Ultrastructural features and structure of the midgut and hindgut of Derocheilocaris remanei were studied. The large endodermal midgut is differentiated into an anterior midgut and a posterior midgut separated by a conspicuous constriction. Both circular and longitudinal striated muscle bands surround the midgut, while the hindgut only presents longitudinal muscles. The limit between the midgut and the cuticle-lined hindgut is marked by a rectal valve. In cross-section, the short hindgut is triradiate and has a distinct Y-shaped lumen. The hindgut cuticular lining appears interrupted at the tip of every branch of the Y. Three different cell types are found in the midgut epithelium: basally located undifferentiated cells that give rise to the other two specialized cell types; secretory zymogen-like cells responsible for extracellular digestion and located mainly in the anterior midgut; and vacuolated cells, distributed all along the midgut and appearing to have several functions, including absorption, intracellular digestion, and nutrient transport. A single basic cell type forms the hindgut epithelium. The suggested function for the hindgut is the transport and ejection of waste products.  相似文献

Ultrastructural and electrophysiological studies on developing heart cells of the moth Hyalophora cecropia are reported. The myocardium is identified at 6 days postoviposition (dpo) and heartbeats are detected at 8 dpo. At 10 dpo eclosion produces a larva. Cellular ultrastructure of the heart is presented from 6, 7, and 8 dpo embryos and first-instar larvae. Electrophysiological recordings are presented to demonstrate that the developing heart is myogenic, cells generate typical cardiac-type action potentials, and some mechanism for intercellular communication is present. The structure as it relates to function is discussed.  相似文献

The tiger‐fly Coenosia attenuata is a globally widespread predatory fly which is not only associated with greenhouse crops, but also occurs in open fields. It is a potential control agent against some of the more common pests in these crops. Assessing the genetic structure and gene flow patterns may be important for planning crop protection strategies and for understanding the historical processes that led to the present distribution of genetic lineages within this species. In the present study, the phylogeographical patterns of this species, based on mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I and nuclear white and elongation factor‐1α genes, are described, revealing relatively low genetic diversity and weak genetic structure associated with a recent and sudden population expansion of the species. The geographical distribution of mitochondrial haplotypes indicates the Mediterranean as the most likely region of origin of the species. Some dispersal patterns of the species are also revaled, including at least three independent colonizations of North and South America: one from Middle East to North America with a strong bottleneck event, another from Europe to South America (Chile), with both likely to be a result of unintentional introduction, and a third one of still undetermined origin to South America (Ecuador). © 2014 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2015, 114 , 308–326.  相似文献

Collections of Mansonia africana mosquito larvae were made at one site in N.E. Tanzania in 1985 and 1987 and from two additional sites, both within about 2 mi of the original one in 1987. An octosporous microsporidian, present at all three sites, was found in both years infecting from 7 to 22% of larvae. Spores (stained in Giemsa) measured 3.0 microns +/- 0.25 microns x 2.25 microns +/- 0.26 microns. Ultrastructurally, spores were seen to have an anterior rim surrounding a depressed area where the endospore was at its thinnest. In transmission electron microscopy section, the rim appeared as two processes into which all layers of the wall extended. At the posterior end all layers of the wall extended into a simple knob-like structure which could be interpreted as a section through a crest running longitudinally around the spore. The polar filament was anisofilar, with two anterior coils of greater diameter than the three posterior coils. Although most closely resembling the genera Amblyspora and Parathelohania in the family Thelohaniidae, the species in M. africana differs from the former, which has oval spores, broadly rounded at the ends, and from the latter, which has a prominent, ridged posterior extension to the spores. The new species has been placed in a new genus and the name Tricornia muhezae proposed.  相似文献

A new species of the genus Styloconops (S. hamariensis n. sp.) is described on material collected in Somalia in the coastal area near Mogadiscio. This ceratopogonid midge is common during the rainy seasons and it has been observed biting on man and cattle. The new species is morphologically similar to S. spinosifrons from which it can be clearly differentiated for at least some diagnostic characters both in the female and male adults.  相似文献

The four eyes of the prolecithophoran Allostoma sp. are disposed in two pairs in a dorsolateral position at the periphery of the brain and beneath its capsule. They are rhabdomeric pigment-cup ocelli. Each eye in the anterior pair consists of one pigment cell and one receptor cell; each in the posterior pair is made up of a larger, single pigment cell and two photoreceptor cells. A lens in front of the pigment cell's aperture is formed by electron-dense, refractive, finger-like protrusions which arise from unpigmented cytoplasmic extensions of the pigment-cup margin. Degenerative signs are sometimes visible in the lens.  相似文献

Previous investigations of the laboratory biology and host range ofHydrellia pakistanae,a biological control ofHydrilla verticillata(hydrilla), used the dioecious hydrilla biotype common to Florida, Texas, and California. A monoecious biotype that is now spreading throughout the mid-Atlantic states, California, and Washington was not investigated during these original studies. We therefore compared the dioecious and monoecious hydrilla biotypes as hosts forH. pakistanae.FemaleH. pakistanaeaccepted the two biotypes equally as ovipositional substrates. Overall developmental success differed little: 42% of eggs oviposited on monoecious hydrilla produced adults compared to 39% of eggs oviposited on dioecious hydrilla. Fly development required about 33 days on both biotypes (at 22 ± 2°C), but larvae that completed development mined 1.6 times as many leaves on monoecious hydrilla as on dioecious plants. These data suggest thatH. pakistanaewould be a useful biocontrol agent of monoecious hydrilla, should this plant invade areas where it can grow as a perennial.  相似文献
