This paper describes structural change and damage to the natural tree vegetation in the Dr Alfredo Barrera Marín Botanical Garden, following Hurricane Gilbert in September, 1988. Post-hurricane data were compared with pre-hurricane data from the same plots, focusing mainly on composition and structure. Near complete defoliation of trees and plants of the understorey occurred and average foliage loss was estimated to be 4.5 t/ha. The density of trees decreased by 33%, and the basal area decreased by 12%. Small diameter trees accounted for the great majority of losses and trees in the largest diameter classes survived best. The average height of trees in the lower canopy decreased by 6% and for those in the upper canopy by 9%. The frequency of understorey plants decreased by 51% and their cover decreased by 70%. Floristic richness decreased only slightly after the hurricane.  相似文献

Nine sugar beet lines were grown in a glasshouse on chernozem soil watered to 35, 50 and 65 % of maximal soil water capacity. After 12 d, plant water potential, net photosynthetic rate, contents of soluble proteins, DNA and RNA, proportion of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RUBISCO) protein, and carbonic anhydrase activity were measured. As soil moisture decreased, the leaf water potential and net photosynthetic rate decreased. DNA and RNA content and carbonic anhydrase activity decreased under moderate drought, and increased with severe drought. RUBISCO protein proportion did not change significantly under decreased soil moisture, while the total soluble protein content decreased. The study has been carried out on Wistar rats. The aim of the present study was to trace the effect of aluminum on erythroidal cells in bone marrow in rats. The number of proerythroblast after 10 days of experiment with aluminum slowly decreased up to 80 days of experiments. However, the number of basophilic erythroblasts after 10 days insignificantly increased but after 20 days gradually decreased up to 80 days of experiments. The bone marrow polichromatic erythroblasts after 10 days of experiment slightly decreased, however after 20, 40 and 80 days of experiments the values decreased significantly. The quality of orthochromatic erythroblasts after 10 days of experiments dropped and after 20, 40 and 80 days of experiments significantly decreased compared to the control value. Aluminum also brings about histological changes in the bone marrow. The statistical significant reductions of hemoglobin and hematocrit levels were found in the aluminum exposed rats.  相似文献

Immunochemical and biochemical methods were used to assess quantitatively the changes in the heart creatine kinase system in the myopathic Syrian hamsters, line CHF I46. Cardiomyopathy in I75-200 day old animals was characterized by decreased content of mitochondria and lower total creatine kinase activity. In isolated mitochondria only the creatine kinase activity was decreased while cytochromes aa3 content and respiration rate were unchanged. The share of mitochondrial creatine kinase in the total tissue enzyme activity was decreased from 33% to I8% and that of BB form was elevated from 5% in control to 20%, at unchanged relative level of MM. Immunoassay showed decreased amount of the mitochondrial creatine kinase in the tissue and its decreased ratio to cytochromes aa3. The results show altered expression of creatine kinase isoenzymes in cardiomyopathy.  相似文献

Calretinin (CR)-immunoreactive interneurons are well known as the interneuron specific interneurons in the hippocampus. CR-immunoreactive neurons form cellular network and regulate the activity of other GABAergic inhibitory interneurons in the hippocampus. In the present study, we investigated age-related changes in CR-immunoreactive neurons and protein levels in the gerbil hippocampus during normal aging. In all subregions of the gerbil hippocampus, the number of CR-immunoreactive neurons was significantly decreased in the postnatal month 6 (PM 6) group compared to that in the PM 1 group. Thereafter, CR-immunoreactive neurons were decreased with age. In addition, the number of CR-immunoreactive cells in the subgranular zone were significantly decreased in the PM 6 group. We also observed that CR protein levels were decreased gradually with age. These results indicate that both CR immunoreactivity and its protein level were decreased with age in the gerbil hippocampus during normal aging.  相似文献

We evaluated the effects of brucine on N-nitrosodiethylamine (DENA)-induced hepatocarcinogenesis in rats. Initiation of hepatocarcinogenesis was done by intraperitoneal injection of diethylnitrosamine (DENA) followed by promotion with phenobarbital. The rats were exposed to dietary brucine for 4 weeks prior to initiation, and the treatment was continued for 22 consecutive weeks. Brucine decreased the incidence, total number, multiplicity, size and volume of preneoplastic hepatic nodules in a dose-dependent manner. Administration of DENA induced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), as evidenced by changes in histopathological architecture, increased activity of cytochrome P450, decreased activity of glutathione Stransferase (GST) as well as decreased antioxidant status, enhanced lipid peroxidation, increased liver marker enzymes. Western blot analysis showed decreased expression of cyclin D1 and Bcl-2 with activation of caspase-3 and increased expression of Bax. Immunohistochemical demonstrated the decreased expression of the PCNA and VEGF. These results indicate that brucine prevents lipid peroxidation and hepatic cell damage and also protects the antioxidant system in DENA-induced hepatocarcinogenesis.  相似文献

The distribution of T- and B-lymphocytes in the body of guinea pigs was studied in different groups of the animals. As shown in this study, in delayed hypersensitivity to staphylococci the number of PE- and E-rosette-forming cells increased in the blood, the spleen, and the lymph nodes and decreased in the thymus; the number of EA- and EAC-rosette-forming cells decreased in the bone marrow and the spleen, the number of T gamma-suppressors decreased in the bone marrow and the distant lymph node. Immediate hypersensitivity to tarragon pollen induced the general increase of the content of T- and B-lymphocytes; the number of T gamma-cells decreased in the thymus, the bone marrow, and the lymph nodes and increased in the spleen. The characteristic features of combined microbial-pollen sensitization were the high content of B-cells in all lymphoid organs (except the thymus), a low level of T-lymphocytes in the blood and the peripheral lymphoid organs, the decreased number of T gamma-cells in most of the immunogenetic organs.  相似文献

In acute experiments in anesthetized rabbits the changes of the pulmonary hemodynamics following myocardial ischemia in the region of the descendent left coronary artery were studied in control animals and after the blockade of alpha-adrenoreceptors by phentolamine or N-cholinoreceptors of autonomic ganglia by hexamethonium. Following myocardial ischemia in control animals the pulmonary artery pressure and flow decreased, the pulmonary vascular resistance was elevated not significantly, the cardiac output decreased more than pulmonary artery flow. Following myocardial ischemia after the blockade of alpha-adrenoreceptors the pulmonary artery flow and cardiac output decreased in the same level and the pulmonary vascular resistance was decreased. In these conditions the pulmonary artery pressure decreased more than in control animals, meanwhile the pulmonary artery flow was decreased in the same level as in the last case. Following myocardial ischemia after the blockade of N-cholinoreceptors the pulmonary hemodynamics changes were the same as they were following myocardial ischemia in the control rabbits, the cardiac output decreased more than pulmonary artery flow. The disbalance of the cardiac output and pulmonary artery flow changes in the case of myocardial ischemia was caused by the pulmonary vessel reactions following activations of the humoral adrenergic mechanisms.  相似文献

A theory was developed to show how we can predict the actions of neuromodulators on Ca2+ movement (yo: impulse-induced increase in Ca2+ concentration; c: basal Ca2+ level) in the nerve terminal from their effects on an impulse-evoked transmitter release (m: quantal content) and short-term facilitation (F) elicited by paired impulses, based on the simplest version of the residual Ca2+ hypothesis of facilitation. It was demonstrated from this theory that yo should be increased (decreased) when both m and F were increased (decreased) and that c should be increased (decreased) when m and F were increased (decreased) and decreased (increased), respectively. These ideas could interpret some published experimental results well.  相似文献

Simultaneous recordings of unit activity in the dorsal raphe nucleus (RD) and serotonin (5HT) release in the striatum were made in the cat. Unit recordings were made using Formvar-coated 32 microns diameter nichrome wires. 5HT release was measured using linear sweep voltammetry with semi-differentiation using electrodes prepared from Teflon-coated 32-gauge stainless steel wire filled with carbon paste and Ag/AgCl electrodes and 27-gauge stainless steel needles as reference and auxiliary electrodes, respectively. The working electrodes were scanned at a rate of 10 mV/s over the range of -0.1 to +0.5 V every 5 minutes using a BAS CV37 voltammograph. During REM sleep RD unit activity was decreased 94% from quiet waking (QW) baseline, while the voltammetric response was decreased by only 57%. Chloral hydrate anesthesia decreased RD unit activity by 18% from QW while the voltammetric response was decreased by 39%. LSD decreased RD unit activity by 50% from QW, but the voltammetric response was decreased by 88%. P-chlorophenylalanine produced no significant change in RD unit activity but decreased the voltammetric response by 82%. These data suggest that RD unit activity and 5HT release often differed dramatically.  相似文献

We investigated the changes in GH-IGF-I axis in non-obese diabetic (NOD)-mice, a model of insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. Diabetic female NOD mice and their age- and sex-matched controls were sacrificed at 4, 14, 21 and 30 days (30d DM) after the onset of glycosuria. Serum GH levels increased and serum IGF-I levels decreased in the 30d DM group (182 ± 32% and 45 ± 24% of age-matched controls respectively, p < 0.05). Another group (30d DM + I) was given SC insulin, and its serum IGF-I levels remained decreased. Liver GH receptor (GHR) and GH binding protein (GHBP) mRNA levels, as well as liver membrane GH binding assays were deeply decreased in the 30d DM group in comparison to controls. GHR message and binding capacity remained decreased in the 30d DM + I group. Renal GHR mRNA was decreased at 21d DM but not at 14d DM, whereas GHBP mRNA remained unchanged throughout the experiment. In conclusion, increased serum GH levels are documented in NOD diabetic mice, similarly to the changes described in humans. The decrease in GHR levels and decreased serum IGF-I in spite of increased circulating GH suggest a state of GH resistance.  相似文献

The flux of glucose through the pentose phosphate pathway, important in relation to the provision of ribose 5-phosphate for nucleotide and RNA synthesis, was decreased by 70% in the diabetic rat heart in parallel with a similar decreased flux through the glycolytic route. A common factor linking the decreased flux through these alternative routes is the known fall in cardiac hexokinase; in these experiments there is a 50% decrease in Type II hexokinase (EC 2.7.1.1.) in both soluble and particulate fractions. The level of fructose 2,6-bisphosphate, a regulator of phosphofructokinase activity, is decreased by 20% in the alloxan diabetic rat heart, this may be a significant additional factor in the marked decrease in the flux of glucose through the glycolytic route in the myocardium in diabetes.  相似文献

Changes in the roots of the carbohydrates and some of the enzymesinvolved in their metabolism have been measured during the forcingof virus-free Timperley Early rhubarb in which the dormancyhad previously been broken by cold treatment. The amount ofsucrose decreased throughout forcing; this mainly occurred duringthe first 7 days. Starch increased during the early stages offorcing and thereafter remained constant. The reducing sugars,glucose and fructose remained throughout at a fairly low andconstant amount. Sucrose synthetase activity remained almostconstant for about 10 days of forcing and then decreased, whilstphosphorylase activity decreased throughout. This study was conducted to examine any changes caused by feed restriction in dogs to contribute to safety evaluation in toxicity studies. Two male 7-month-old beagle dogs/group were fed 300 (control), 150 (50% of control), or 70 g/animal of diet daily (23% of control) for 4 weeks. Effects of feed restriction, except for clinical signs, were noted depending on the feed dosage in almost all examinations. The principal outcomes were: decreased body weight and water consumption, ECG changes (decreased heart rate and prolonged QTc), and hematopoietic and lymphopoietic suppression (decreased reticulocyte ratio or white blood cell count in hematology, decreased nucleated cell count in bone marrow, decreased erythroid parameters in myelography, and hypocellularity of bone marrow and thymic atrophy in histopathology). In addition, some changes were noted in urinalysis (decreased urine volume and sodium and potassium excretion), blood chemistry (decreased ALP and inorganic phosphorus and increased creatinine), organ weights, and gastric histopathology. These results provide important reference data for distinguishing the primary effects of test compounds from secondary effects of decreased food consumption in toxicity studies in beagle dogs.  相似文献

Chronic continuous infusion of norepinephrine in rats causes alterations in biochemical and physiologic responses of the cardiovascular system and in cardiovascular adrenoceptor number. The response of cardiac and aortic ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) activity to stimulation by norepinephrine was decreased in rats receiving norepinephrine infusion. These responses are due to stimulation of beta- and alpha-adrenergic receptors, respectively. Additionally, there was reduced stimulation of aortic ODC activity by angiotensin II and vasopressin. The cardiac ODC response to angiotensin II was decreased, but the response to vasopressin was not affected. The decreased ODC response is accompanied by decreased pressor responses to the alpha-adrenergic agonist phenylephrine. Decreased numbers of alpha- and beta-adrenoceptor binding sites (as measured by the binding of [3H]prazosin and [125I]pindolol) might mediate, in part, the altered responses to adrenergic agonists. The decreased cardiovascular responsiveness measured in these animals after several days of norepinephrine infusion hypertension contrasts with the increased responses found in most other forms of hypertension. This provides a useful model in which to examine the consequences of prolonged adrenergic receptor stimulation.  相似文献

Abstract. Tomato ( Lycopersicon esculentum Mill ev. Ailsa Craig) leaf polypeptides, radiolabelled with L-[36S] methionine during drought stress, were separated by two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Three sets of polypeptides were distinguished: those that decreased, increased or transiently increased in response to drought stress. Three sets of polypeptides also could be distinguished during recovery from drought stress: those that increased, decreased rapidly or decreased slowly and could still be detected after 6 h of recovery. The set of polypeptides that decreased during drought stress was the same set that increased during recovery and those that increased during stress, decreased during recovery. The leaf ABA concentration increased rapidly in response to drought stress and decreased rapidly during recovery from drought stress, returning to the nonstress level after 6 h of rehydration. There was a correlation between the accumulation of some of the drought-induced polypeptides and the pattern of ABA accumulation during stress and recovery from stress.  相似文献

1. The effects of starvation post partum (24 h) and tumour growth pre partum on the initiation of lactation in the rat were studied. 2. Tumour growth decreased food intake at 24 h, but not at 2 days post partum. 3. Pup growth rate increased with hyperphagia; starvation and tumour burden decreased pup growth, and starvation decreased maternal body weight. 4. Starvation decreased gastrointestinal-tract mass; tumour growth decreased gastrointestinal-tract and mammary-gland mass. 5. Mammary-gland DNA-synthesis rate was high immediately post partum, but decreased by day 3 of lactation; starvation and tumour burden decreased this rate, and also decreased gastrointestinal-tract DNA-synthesis rate. 6. Arteriovenous differences for glucose and lactate across the mammary gland did not change with time, nor were they affected by the tumour. Starvation decreased arterial glucose and lactate, and the gland extracted less glucose but produced lactate. 7. Mammary-gland lipogenesis was sensitive to starvation and to tumour growth. 8. In contrast with the gradual development of mammary-gland lipogenic enzyme activities, lipoprotein lipase activity was high in the gland by 2 days post partum; starvation or tumour burden decreased the activity. 9. The mammary gland is sensitive post partum to decreased food intake, and to tumour presence. The effects of the latter are apparently independent of hypophagia.  相似文献

Expression of hippocalcin and neural visinin-like calcium-binding protein 2 (NVP2) in aging rat brain was investigated by immunoblot and immunohistochemical analyses. In 3-month old rats, hippocalcin and NVP2 were present at high concentrations in hippocampal and cerebral pyramidal cells and dentate granule cells, with hippocalcin protein levels being five to ten times higher than NVP2 levels. Hippocalcin levels in hippocampus and cerebral cortex decreased by approximately 20% at 24 months. While the number of hippocalcin-positive cells in CA3, dentate gyrus and cerebral cortex were preserved, staining intensity decreased. In contrast, the number and staining intensity of hippocalcin-positive cells in CA1 were maintained. NVP2 levels in hippocampus and cerebral cortex decreased by approximately 30% at 24 months. In cerebral cortex, the number and intensity of NVP2-positive cells decreased. In CA1 through CA3 and in dentate gyrus, NVP2-positive cell numbers were preserved, but staining intensity decreased. In summary, the loss of hippocalcin and NVP2 in aging rat brain may be associated with age-related impairment of postsynaptic functions.  相似文献

Decreased mitochondrial membrane potential (DeltaPsi(M)) has been found in a variety of aging cell types from several mammalian species. The physiological significance and mechanisms of the decreased DeltaPsi(M) in aging are not well understood. This review considers the generation of DeltaPsi(M) and its role in ATP generation together with factors that modify DeltaPsi(M) with emphasis on mitochondrial membrane permeability, particularly the role of a multiprotein membrane megapore, the mitochondrial permeability transition pore complex (PTPC). Previous data showing decreased DeltaPsi(M) in aged cells is considered in relation to the methods available to estimate DeltaPsi(M). In the past the majority of studies used whole cell rhodamine 123 fluorescence to estimate DeltaPsi(M) in lymphocytes from mice or rats. Imaging of DeltaPsi(M) in living, in situ mitochondria using laser confocal scanning microscopy offers advantages over whole cell measurements or those from isolated mitochondria, particularly if several different potentiometric dyes are employed. Furthermore, high resolution imaging of the newer fixable potentiometric dyes allows immunocytochemistry for specific proteins and DeltaPsi(M) to be examined in the same cells or even the same mitochondria. We found that decreased DeltaPsi(M) in p53 overexpression-induced or naturally occurring senescence is associated with decreased responsiveness of the PTPC to agents that induce either its opening or closing. The decreased PTPC responsiveness seems to reflect, at least in part, decreased levels of a key PTPC protein, the adenine nucleotide translocase. We also consider the possible basis for decreased DeltaPsi(M) in fibroblasts from patients with Parkinson's disease, an age-related neurodegenerative disease. Finally, we speculate on the mechanisms and functional significance of decreased DeltaPsi(M) in aging.  相似文献

Administration of methionine sulfoximine (MSO) to rats and mice significantly decreased cerebral levels ofS-adenosyl-l-homocysteine (AdoHcy). Concurrent administration of methionine prevented this decrease and, when methionine was given alone, significantly elevated AdoHcy levels resulted in both species. Regionally, AdoHcy levels varied from 20 nmol/g in rat cerebellum and spinal cord to about 60 nmol/g in hypothalamus and midbrain. MSO decreased AdoHcy in all regions tested except striatum, midbrain, and spinal cord. AdoMet/AdoHcy ratios (methylation index) varied from 0.48 in hypothalamus to 2.4 in cerebellum, and MSO administration decreased these ratios in all regions except hypothalamus. AdoHcy hydrolase activity was lowest in hypothalamus, highest in brainstem and, generally, varied inversely with regional AdoHcy levels. MSO decreased AdoHcy hydrolase activity in all regions except hypothalamus and spinal cord. Cycloleucine administration resulted in significantly decreased levels of mouse brain AdoHcy, whereas the administration of dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA) failed to affect AdoHcy levels. It is concluded that (a) cerebral AdoHcy levels are more tightly regulated than are those of AdoMet after MSO administration, (b) slight fluctuations of AdoHcy levels may be important in regulating AdoHcy hydrolase activity and hence AdoHcy catabolism in vivo, (c) the AdoMet/AdoHcy ratio reflects the absolute AdoMet concentration rather than the transmethylation flux, (d) the decreased AdoMet levels in midbrain, cortex, and striatum after MSO with no corresponding decrease in AdoHcy suggest an enhanced AdoMet utilization, hence an increased transmethylation in the MSO preconvulsant state.Supported by USPHS, NINCDS grant NS-06294.  相似文献
