Growth in elevated CO2 often leads to decreased plant nitrogen contents and down-regulation of photosynthetic capacity. Here, we investigated whether elevated CO2 limits nitrogen uptake when nutrient movement to roots is unrestricted, and the dependence of this limitation on nitrogen supply and plant development in durum wheat (Triticum durum Desf.). Plants were grown hydroponically at two N supplies and ambient and elevated CO2 concentrations. Elevated CO2 decreased nitrate uptake per unit root mass with low N supply at early grain filling, but not at anthesis. This decrease was not associated with higher nitrate or amino acid, or lower non-structural carbohydrate contents in roots. At anthesis, elevated CO2 decreased the nitrogen content of roots with both levels of N and that of aboveground organs with high N. With low N, elevated CO2 increased N allocation to aboveground plant organs and nitrogen concentration per unit flag leaf area at anthesis, and per unit aboveground dry mass at both growth stages. The results from the hydroponic experiment suggest that elevated CO2 restricts nitrate uptake late in development, high N supply overriding this restriction. Increased nitrogen allocation to young leaves at low N supply could alleviate photosynthetic acclimation to elevated CO2.

Summary The physiological activity and C and N allocation of beech seedlings planted in two different beech forest soils (acid brown earth, rendzina) were studied over 80 days. One adult earthworm Octolasion lacteum (Örley) was placed in half of the containers. Transpiration, CO2, assimilation, chlorophyll synthesis and N incorporation were higher in the acid brown earth than in the rendzina. Fine root production was also higher in the acid brown earth. Production of stems and total N incorporation were higher in the O. lacteum treatments than in the controls. Burrowing activity of O. lacteum did not affect total root production but stimulated the transfer of C and N towards aboveground parts of the plants and shifted the large root to fine root ratio towards large roots. O. lacteum effects were similar in both soils. It is concluded that endogeic earthworms significantly affect resource allocation patterns of beech seedlings over a wide range of soils. This effect can be partly explained by an increased availability of N in soils worked by earth-worms.

We hypothesized that greater photosynthate supply at elevated [CO2] could compensate for increased below-ground C demands of arbuscular mycorrhizas. Therefore, we investigated plant growth, mineral nutrition, starch, and net gas exchange responses of two Citrus spp. to phosphorus (P) nutrition and mycorrhizas at elevated atmospheric [CO2]. Half of the seedlings of sour orange (C. aurantium L.) and ‘Ridge Pineapple’ sweet orange (C. sinensis L. Osbeck) were inoculated with the arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungus, Glomus intraradices Schenck and Smith and half were non-mycorrhizal (NM). Plants were grown at ambient or 2X ambient [CO2] in unshaded greenhouses for 11 weeks and fertilized daily with nutrient solution either without added P or with 2 mM P in a low-P soil. High P supply reduced AM colonization whereas elevated [CO2] counteracted the depressive effect of P on intraradical colonization and vesicle development. Seedlings grown at either elevated [CO2], high P or with G. intraradices had greater growth, net assimilation of CO2 (A CO2) in leaves, leaf water-use efficiency, leaf dry wt/area, leaf starch and carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratio. Root/whole plant dry wt ratio was decreased by elevated [CO2], P, and AM colonization. Mycorrhizal seedlings had higher leaf-P status but lower leaf N and K concentrations than nonmycorrhizal seedlings which was due to growth dilution effects. Starch in fibrous roots was increased by elevated [CO2] but reduced by G. intraradices, especially at low-P supply. In fibrous roots, elevated [CO2] had no effect on C/N, but AM colonization decreased C/N in both Citrus spp. grown at low-P supply. Overall, there were no species differences in growth or A CO2. Mycorrhizas did not increase plant growth at ambient [CO2]. At elevated [CO2], however, mycorrhizas stimulated growth at both P levels in sour orange, the more mycorrhiza-dependent species, but only at low-P in sweet orange, the less dependent species. At low-P and elevated [CO2], colonization by the AM fungus increased A CO2 in both species but more so in sour orange than in sweet orange. Leaf P and root N concentrations were increased more and root starch level was decreased less by AM in sour orange than in sweet orange. Thus, the additional [CO2] availability to mycorrhizal plants increased CO2 assimilation, growth and nutrient uptake over that of NM plants especially in sour orange under P limitation. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.

Over time, the relative effects of elevated [CO2] on the aboveground photosynthesis, growth and development of rice (Oryza sativa L.) are likely to be changed with increasing duration of CO2 exposure, but the resultant effects on rice belowground responses remain to be evaluated. To investigate the impacts of elevated [CO2] on seasonal changes in root growth, morphology and physiology of rice, a free‐air CO2 enrichment (FACE) experiment was performed at Wuxi, Jiangsu, China, in 2002–2003. A japonica cultivar with large panicle was exposed to two [CO2] (ambient [CO2], 370 μmol mol−1; elevated [CO2], 570 μmol mol−1) at three levels of nitrogen (N): low (LN, 15 g N m−2), medium (MN, 25 g N m−2) and high N (HN, 35 g N m−2). Elevated [CO2] increased cumulative root volume, root dry weight, adventitious root length and adventitious root number at all developmental stages by 25–71%, which was mainly associated with increased root growth rate during early growth period (EGP) and lower rate of root senescence during late growth period (LGP), while a slight inhibition of root growth rate occurred during middle growth period (MGP). For individual adventitious roots, elevated [CO2] increased average length, volume, diameter and dry weight early in the season, but the effects gradually disappeared in subsequent stages. Total surface area and active adsorption area per unit root dry weight reached their maxima 10 days earlier in FACE vs. ambient plants, but both of them together with root oxidation ability per unit root dry weight declined with elevated [CO2] during MGP and LGP, the decline being larger during MGP than LGP. The CO2‐induced decreases in specific root activities during MGP and LGP were associated with a larger amount of root accumulation during EGP and lower N concentration and higher C/N ratio in roots during MGP and LGP in FACE vs. ambient plants. The results suggest that most of the CO2‐induced increases in shoot growth of rice are similarly associated with increased root growth.

In recent years, increased awareness of the potential interactions between rising atmospheric CO2 concentrations ([ CO2 ]) and temperature has illustrated the importance of multifactorial ecosystem manipulation experiments for validating Earth System models. To address the urgent need for increased understanding of responses in multifactorial experiments, this article synthesizes how ecosystem productivity and soil processes respond to combined warming and [ CO2 ] manipulation, and compares it with those obtained in single factor [ CO2 ] and temperature manipulation experiments. Across all combined elevated [ CO2 ] and warming experiments, biomass production and soil respiration were typically enhanced. Responses to the combined treatment were more similar to those in the [ CO2 ]‐only treatment than to those in the warming‐only treatment. In contrast to warming‐only experiments, both the combined and the [ CO2 ]‐only treatments elicited larger stimulation of fine root biomass than of aboveground biomass, consistently stimulated soil respiration, and decreased foliar nitrogen (N) concentration. Nonetheless, mineral N availability declined less in the combined treatment than in the [ CO2 ]‐only treatment, possibly due to the warming‐induced acceleration of decomposition, implying that progressive nitrogen limitation (PNL) may not occur as commonly as anticipated from single factor [ CO2 ] treatment studies. Responses of total plant biomass, especially of aboveground biomass, revealed antagonistic interactions between elevated [ CO2 ] and warming, i.e. the response to the combined treatment was usually less‐than‐additive. This implies that productivity projections might be overestimated when models are parameterized based on single factor responses. Our results highlight the need for more (and especially more long‐term) multifactor manipulation experiments. Because single factor CO2 responses often dominated over warming responses in the combined treatments, our results also suggest that projected responses to future global warming in Earth System models should not be parameterized using single factor warming experiments.

Summary The scale insect, Toumeyella sp., feeds exclusively on the subtropical hammock tree lignum vitae (Guaiacum sanctum L.). The combined effects of scale herbivory and shading on leaf gas exchange characteristics and growth of lignum vitae trees were studied using a factorial design. Trees grown in full sun or in 75% shade were manually infested with scale or left noninfested. Beginning 4 weeks after infestation, net CO2 assimilation, stomatal conductance, transpiration, internal partial pressure of CO2, and water-use efficiency were determined on single-leaves at 4-week intervals for trees in each treatment. At the end of the experiment, net CO2 assimilation was determined for whole plants. Total leaf area, leaf, stem, and root dry weights, and leaf chlorophyll and nitrogen concentrations were also determined. Scale infested trees generally had lower net CO2 assimilation, stomatal conductance, and transpiration rates as well as less leaf area, and root, stem, and leaf dry weights than noninfested trees. Twenty four weeks after the shade treatment was imposed, sun-grown trees had approximately twice the leaf area of shade-grown trees. Shade-grown trees compensated for the reduced leaf area by increasing their photosynthetic efficiency. This resulted in no difference in light saturated net CO2 assimilation on a whole plant basis between sun-grown and shade-grown trees. Chlorophyll and nitrogen concentrations per unit leaf area were greater in leaves of shade-grown trees than in leaves of sun-grown trees. Shading and herbivory by Toumeyella sp. each resulted in decreased growth of Guaiacum sanctum. Scale insect herbivory did not result in greater detrimental effects on leaf gas exchange characteristics for shade-grown than for sun-grown trees. Herbivory by Toumeyella resulted in a greater decrease in tree growth for sun-grown than for shade-grown trees.

Atmospheric CO2 enrichment is expected to often benefit plant growth, despite causing global warming and nitrogen (N) dilution in plants. Most plants primarily procure N as inorganic nitrate (NO3?) or ammonium (NH4+), using membrane‐localized transport proteins in roots, which are key targets for improving N use. Although interactive effects of elevated CO2, chronic warming and N form on N relations are expected, these have not been studied. In this study, tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) plants were grown at two levels of CO2 (400 or 700 ppm) and two temperature regimes (30 or 37°C), with NO3? or NH4+ as the N source. Elevated CO2 plus chronic warming severely inhibited plant growth, regardless of N form, while individually they had smaller effects on growth. Although %N in roots was similar among all treatments, elevated CO2 plus warming decreased (1) N‐uptake rate by roots, (2) total protein concentration in roots, indicating an inhibition of N assimilation and (3) shoot %N, indicating a potential inhibition of N translocation from roots to shoots. Under elevated CO2 plus warming, reduced NO3?‐uptake rate per g root was correlated with a decrease in the concentration of NO3?‐uptake proteins per g root, reduced NH4+ uptake was correlated with decreased activity of NH4+‐uptake proteins and reduced N assimilation was correlated with decreased concentration of N‐assimilatory proteins. These results indicate that elevated CO2 and chronic warming can act synergistically to decrease plant N uptake and assimilation; hence, future global warming may decrease both plant growth and food quality (%N).

Wood structure might be altered through the physiological responses to atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration ([CO2]) and nitrogen (N) deposition. We investigated growth, water relations and wood structure of 1-year-old seedlings of two deciduous broad-leaved tree species, Quercus mongolica (oak, a ring-porous species) and Alnus hirsuta (alder, a diffuse-porous species and N2–fixer), grown under a factorial combination of two levels of [CO2] (36 and 72 Pa) and nitrogen supply (N; low and high) for 141 days in phytotron chambers. In oak, there was no significant effect of [CO2] on wood structure, although elevated [CO2] tended to decrease stomatal conductance (g s) and increased water use efficiency regardless of the N treatment. However, high N supply increased root biomass and induced wider earlywood and larger vessels in the secondary xylem in stems, leading to increased hydraulic conductance. In alder, there was significant interactive effect of [CO2] and N on vessel density, and high N supply increased the mean vessel area. Our results suggest that wood structures related to water transport were not markedly altered, although elevated [CO2] induced changes in physiological parameters such as g s and biomass allocation, and that N fertilization had more pronounced effects on non-N2-fixing oak than on N2-fixing alder.

The aim of this work was to examine the response of wheat plants to a doubling of the atmospheric CO2 concentration on: (1) carbon and nitrogen partitioning in the plant; (2) carbon release by the roots; and (3) the subsequent N uptake by the plants. The experiment was performed in controlled laboratory conditions by exposing fast-growing spring wheat plants, during 28 days, to a 14CO2 concentration of 350 or 700 L L–1 at two levels of soil nitrogen fertilization. Doubling CO2 availability increased total plant production by 34% for both N treatment. In the N-fertilized soil, the CO2 enrichment resulted in an increase in dry mass production of 41% in the shoots and 23% in the roots; without N fertilization this figure was 33% and 37%, respectively. In the N-fertilized soil, the CO2 increase enhanced the total N uptake by 14% and lowered the N concentration in the shoots by 23%. The N concentration in the roots was unchanged. In the N-fertilized soil, doubling CO2 availability increased N uptake by 32% but did not change the N concentrations, in either shoots or roots. The CO2 enrichment increased total root-derived carbon by 12% with N fertilization, and by 24% without N fertilization. Between 85 and 90% of the total root derived-14C came from respiration, leaving only 10 to 15% in the soil as organic 14C. However, when total root-derived 14C was expressed as a function of root dry weight, these differences were only slightly significant. Thus, it appears that the enhanced carbon release from the living roots in response to increased atmospheric CO2, is not due to a modification of the activity of the roots, but is a result of the increased size of the root system. The increase of root dry mass also resulted in a stimulation of the soil N mineralization related to the doubling atmospheric CO2 concentration. The discussion is focused on the interactions between the carbon and nitrogen allocation, especially to the root system, and the implications for the acquisition of nutrients by plants in response to CO2 increase.Abbreviations N soil fertilization without nitrogen - N soil fertilization with nitrogen

Summary Relationships between leaf nitrogen content and within canopy light exposure were studied in mature nectarine peach trees (Prunus persica cv. Fantasia) that had received 0, 112, 196, 280 or 364 kg of fertilizer nitrogen per hectare per year for the previous 3 years. The relationships between light saturated leaf CO2 assimilation rates and leaf nitrogen concentration were also determined on trees in the highest and lowest nitrogen fertilization treatments. The slope of the linear relationship between leaf N content per unit leaf area and light exposure was similar for all nitrogen treatments but the y-intercept of the relationship increased with increasing N status. The slope of the relationship between leaf N content per unit leaf area and light saturated CO2 assimilation rates was greater for the high N trees than the low N trees, but maximum measured leaf CO2 assimilation rates were similar for both the high and low N treatments. A diagrammatic model of the partitioning of leaf photosynthetic capacity with respect to leaf light exposure for high and low nitrogen trees suggests that the major influence of increased N availability is an increase in the photosynthetic capacity of partially shaded leaves but not of the maximum capacity of highly exposed leaves.

We examined the response of mycorrhizal fungi to free-air CO2 enrichment (FACE) and nitrogen (N) fertilization in a warm temperate forest to better understand potential influences over plant nutrient uptake and soil carbon (C) storage. In particular, we hypothesized that mycorrhizal fungi and glomalin would become more prevalent under elevated CO2 but decrease under N fertilization. In addition, we predicted that N fertilization would mitigate any positive effects of elevated CO2 on mycorrhizal abundance. Overall, we observed a 14% increase in ectomycorrhizal (ECM) root colonization under CO2 enrichment, which implies that elevated CO2 results in greater C investments in these fungi. Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) hyphal length and glomalin stocks did not respond substantially to CO2 enrichment, and effects of CO2 on AM root colonization varied by date. Nitrogen effects on AM fungi were not consistent with our hypothesis, as we found an increase in AM colonization under N fertilization. Lastly, neither glomalin concentrations nor ECM colonization responded significantly to N fertilization or to an N-by-CO2 interaction. A longer duration of N fertilization may be required to detect effects on these parameters.

A modified root ingrowth method was developed to minimize destructive sampling in experiments with limited space, and used to estimate belowground net primary production and root tissue quality in a native semiarid grassland exposed to elevated CO2 for five years. Increases in root production of over 60% were observed with elevated CO2 during years of intermediate levels of precipitation, with smaller effects in a very wet year and no effects in a very dry year. Aboveground to belowground production ratios, and the depth distribution of root production, did not differ between ambient and elevated CO2 treatments. Root soluble concentrations increased an average of 11% and lignin concentrations decreased an average of 6% with elevated CO2, while nitrogen concentrations decreased an average of 21%. However, most tissue quality responses to CO2 varied greatly among years, and C:N ratios were higher in only one year (22 ambient vs. 33 elevated). Among years, root nitrogen concentrations declined with increasing aboveground plant nitrogen yield, and increased over the study period. Estimates of root production by the ingrowth donut method were much lower than previous estimates in the shortgrass steppe based on 14C decay. We discuss reasons why all ingrowth methods will always result in relative rather than absolute estimates of root production.

Summary Two C3 grasses (Hordeum vulgare L., Avena sativa L.) and two C4 grasses (Panicum miliaceum L., Panicum crus-galli L.) were cultivated in standard soil in the open air in pure cultures and in various mixed cultures at low and high nitrogen fertilization levels. After three months the dry weight, length and nitrogen content of the aboveground and below-ground parts of the plants and the shoot/root ratios were determined. Hordeum vulgare was the most successful species irrespective of the nitrogen fertilization level, and also exhibited in most cases the highest nitrogen concentrations. Panicum miliaceum, on the other hand, was the species least able to compete. The production of biomass was reduced in cultures growing under nitrogen starvation conditions, this phenomenon being more pronounced with respect to the C4 than to the C3 species. The decrease in the production of biomass at low N conditions was most drastic with Panicum crus-galli, the species with the lowest nitrogen content and thus assumed to be best adapted to nitrogen starvation conditions. In cultures growing at low nitrogen fertilization levels the shoot/root ratios of all species.shifted in favour of an increasing root proportion. The extent of this shift, however, differed from species to species.

Water and nitrogen (N) deficiency are two major constraints limiting the yield and quality of many oilseed crops worldwide. This study was designed to assess the response of Camelina sativa (L.) Crantz to the availability of N and water resources on photosynthesis and yield parameters. All the measured variables, which included plant height, root and shoot dry matter, root:shoot ratio, xylem pressure potential (XPP), yield components, photosynthetic parameters, and instantaneous water-use efficiency (WUE) were remarkably influenced by water and nitrogen supply. Net photosynthetic rate (P N) and yield components were significantly decreased more by water deficit than by N deficiency. XPP, stomatal conductance (g s), and intercellular CO2 concentration (C i) decreased substantially as the water deficit increased irrespective of the level of N application. WUE at the high N supply [100 and 150 kg(N) ha−1] dropped in a large degree as the increased water deficit due to a larger decrease in P N than transpiration rate (E). The results of this study suggest that the regulative capacity of N supply on photosynthetic and plant growth response is significantly affected by soil water status and C. sativa is more sensitive to water deficit than N supply.

Plant growth and adaptation to cold and freezing temperatures in a CO2-enriched atmosphere have received little attention despite the predicted effects of elevated CO2 on plant distribution and productivity. Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.] seedlings from latitudinally distinct seed sources (66°N and 60°N) were grown for one simulated growth season under controlled conditions in an atmosphere enriched in CO2 (70 Pa) and at ambient CO2 (40 Pa), combined factorially with low (3.6 mM) or high (15.7 mM) concentrations of nitrogen fertilization. There was a clear difference between the two provenances in height growth, in the timing of bud set, and in freezing tolerance. Nitrogen fertilization increased height growth in both provenances, while CO2 enrichment stimulated height growth only in the southern provenance. We found no significant effects of elevated CO2 or nitrogen fertilization on the timing of bud set. During cold acclimation, freezing tolerance increased from –10°C to –35°C, and there was a marked increase in all soluble sugars except inositol. Elevated CO2 in combination with high nitrogen led to a slight increased freezing tolerance in both provenances during the early stages of cold acclimation. However, towards the end of cold acclimation, elevated CO2 and high nitrogen led to reduced freezing tolerance in the southern provenance, while elevated CO2 and low nitrogen reduced freezing tolerance in the northern provenance. These results suggest that CO2 enrichment influences the development of freezing tolerance, and that these responses differ with available nitrogen and between provenances.

本文以玉米为研究对象,采用盆栽底部通入CO2的方法模拟不同CO2泄漏情景,研究CK(0 g m-2 d-1)和G1000(1000 g m-2 d-1)和G2000(2000 g m-2 d-1)三种泄漏情景下CO2对玉米根系形态的影响。
