We evaluated the combined effects of elevated CO2 and water availability on photosynthesis in barley. Soil and plant water content decreased with water stress, but less under
elevated CO2 concentration (EC) compared with ambient CO2 concentration (AC). During water stress, stomatal conductance, carboxylation rate, RuBP regeneration, and the rate of triose
phosphate utilisation (TPU) were decreased but less when plants grew under EC. Drought treatments caused only a slight effect
on maximum photochemical efficiency (variable to maximum fluorescence ratio, Fv/Fm), whereas the actual quantum yield (ΦPS2), maximum electron transport rate (Jmax) and photochemical quenching (qP) were decreased and the non photochemical quenching (NPQ) was enhanced. Under water deficit,
the allocation of electrons to CO2 assimilation was diminished by 49 % at AC and by 26 % at EC while the allocation to O2 reduction was increased by 15 % at AC and by 12 % at EC. 相似文献

To examine the role of sink size on photosynthetic acclimation under elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations ([CO2]), we tested the effects of panicle-removal (PR) treatment on photosynthesis in rice (Oryza sativa L.). Rice was grown at two [CO2] levels (ambient and ambient + 200 μmol mol−1) throughout the growing season, and at full-heading stage, at half the plants, a sink-limitation treatment was imposed by
the removal of the panicles. The PR treatment alleviated the reduction of green leaf area, the contents of chlorophyll (Chl)
and Rubisco after the full-heading stage, suggesting delay of senescence. Nonetheless, elevated [CO2] decreased photosynthesis (measured at current [CO2]) of plants exposed to the PR treatment. No significant [CO2] × PR interaction on photosynthesis was observed. The decrease of photosynthesis by elevated [CO2] of plants was associated with decreased leaf Rubisco content and N content. Leaf glucose content was increased by the PR
treatment and also by elevated [CO2]. In conclusion, a sink-limitation in rice improved N status in the leaves, but this did not prevent the photosynthetic down-regulation
under elevated [CO2]. 相似文献

The effects of salinity (sea water at 0 ‰ versus 30 ‰) on gross rates of O2 evolution (J
O2) and net rates of CO2 uptake (P
N) were measured in the halotolerant estuarine C4 grasses Spartina patens, S. alterniflora, S. densiflora, and Distichlis spicata in controlled growth environments. Under high irradiance, salinity had no significant effect on the intercellular to ambient
CO2 concentration ratio (C
i/C
a). However, during photosynthesis under limiting irradiance, the maximum quantum efficiency of CO2 fixation decreased under salinity across species, suggesting there is increased leakage of the CO2 delivered to the bundle sheath cells by the C4 pump. Growth under salinity did not affect the maximum intrinsic efficiency of photosystem 2, PS2 (FV/FM) in these species, suggesting salinity had no effect on photosynthesis by inactivation of PS2 reaction centers. Under saline
conditions and high irradiance, P
N was reduced by 75 % in Spartina patens and S. alterniflora, whereas salinity had no effect on P
N in S. densiflora or D. spicata. This inhibition of P
N in S. patens and S. alterniflora was not due to an effect on stomatal conductance since the ratio of C
i/C
a did not decrease under saline conditions. In growth with and without salt, P
N was saturated at ∼500 μmol(quantum) m−2 s−1 while J
O2 continued to increase up to full sunlight, indicating that carbon assimilation was not tightly coupled to photochemistry
in these halophytic species. This increase in alternative electron flow under high irradiance might be an inherent function
in these halophytes for dissipating excess energy. 相似文献

The current concentrations of O3 have been shown to cause significant negative effects on crop yield. The present levels of ozone may not induce visible symptoms
in most of plants, but can result in substantial losses in reproductive output. This paper considers the impact of ambient
O3 on gas exchange, photosynthetic pigments, chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence and carbohydrate levels in the flag leaf of wheat
plants during various stages of reproductive development using open-top chambers. Mean O3 concentration was 45.7 ppb during wheat growth and 50.2 ppb after flag leaf development. Reproductive stage showed higher
exceedence of O3 above 40 ppb compared to the vegetative stage. Diurnal variations in net photosynthetic rate (P
N) and stomatal conductance (g
s), intercellular CO2 concentration (C
i), Fv/Fm ratio, photosynthetic pigments, soluble sugars, and starch were measured at 10, 30, and 50 days after flag leaf expansion
(DAFE). The results showed reductions in P
N, g
s, Fv/Fm ratio, photosynthetic pigments and starch, and increases in C
i, F0, and soluble sugars in nonfiltered chambers (NFCs) compared to filtered chambers (FCs). Maximum changes in measured parameters
were observed at 50 DAFE (i.e. grain filling and setting phase). Diurnal variation in P
N showed double peaked curve in both FCs and NFCs, but delayed peak and early depression in NFCs. Stomatal conductance was
significantly lower in NFCs. The study suggests that higher prevalence of ambient O3 during reproductive development led to significant alteration in physiological vitality of wheat having potential negative
influence on yield. 相似文献

In sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) grown under controlled conditions and subjected to drought by withholding watering, net photosynthetic rate (P
N) and stomatal conductance (g
s) of attached leaves decreased as leaf water potential (Ψw) declined from −0.3 to −2.9 MPa. Although g
s decreased over the whole range of Ψw, nearly constant values in the intercellular CO2 concentrations (C
i) were observed as Ψw decreased to −1.8 MPa, but C
i increased as Ψw decreased further. Relative quantum yield, photochemical quenching, and the apparent quantum yield of photosynthesis decreased
with water deficit, whereas non-photochemical quenching (qNP) increased progressively. A highly significant negative relationship between qNP and ATP content was observed. Water deficit did not alter the pyridine nucleotide concentration but decreased ATP content
suggesting metabolic impairment. At a photon flux density of 550 μmol m−2 s−1, the allocation of electrons from photosystem (PS) 2 to O2 reduction was increased by 51 %, while the allocation to CO2 assimilation was diminished by 32 %, as Ψw declined from −0.3 to −2.9 MPa. A significant linear relationship between mean P
N and the rate of total linear electron transport was observed in well watered plants, the correlation becoming curvilinear
when water deficit increased. The maximum quantum yield of PS2 was not affected by water deficit, whereas qP declined only at very severe stress and the excess photon energy was dissipated by increasing qNP indicating that a greater proportion of the energy was thermally dissipated. This accounted for the apparent down-regulation
of PS2 and supported the protective role of qNP against photoinhibition in sunflower. 相似文献

The effects of elevated growth temperature (ambient + 3.5°C) and CO2 (700 μmol mol−1) on leaf photosynthesis, pigments and chlorophyll fluorescence of a boreal perennial grass (Phalaris arundinacea L.) under different water regimes (well watered to water shortage) were investigated. Layer-specific measurements were conducted
on the top (younger leaf) and low (older leaf) canopy positions of the plants after anthesis. During the early development
stages, elevated temperature enhanced the maximum rate of photosynthesis (P
max) of the top layer leaves and the aboveground biomass, which resulted in earlier senescence and lower photosynthesis and biomass
at the later periods. At the stage of plant maturity, the content of chlorophyll (Chl), leaf nitrogen (NL), and light response of effective photochemical efficiency (ΦPSII) and electron transport rate (ETR) was significantly lower under elevated temperature than ambient temperature in leaves
at both layers. CO2 enrichment enhanced the photosynthesis but led to a decline of NL and Chl content, as well as lower fluorescence parameters of ΦPSII and ETR in leaves at both layers. In addition, the down-regulation by CO2 elevation was significant at the low canopy position. Regardless of climate treatment, the water shortage had a strongly
negative effect on the photosynthesis, biomass growth, and fluorescence parameters, particularly in the leaves from the low
canopy position. Elevated temperature exacerbated the impact of water shortage, while CO2 enrichment slightly alleviated the drought-induced adverse effects on P
max. We suggest that the light response of ΦPSII and ETR, being more sensitive to leaf-age classes, reflect the photosynthetic responses to climatic treatments and drought
stress better than the fluorescence parameters under dark adaptation. 相似文献

The slow kinetic phases of the chlorophyll a fluorescence transient (induction) are valuable tools in studying dynamic regulation of light harvesting, light energy distribution between photosystems, and heat dissipation in photosynthetic organisms. However, the origin of these phases are not yet fully understood. This is especially true in the case of prokaryotic oxygenic photoautotrophs, the cyanobacteria. To understand the origin of the slowest (tens of minutes) kinetic phase, the M–T fluorescence decline, in the context of light acclimation of these globally important microorganisms, we have compared spectrally resolved fluorescence induction data from the wild type Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 cells, using orange (λ?=?593 nm) actinic light, with those of mutants, ΔapcD and ΔOCP, that are unable to perform either state transition or fluorescence quenching by orange carotenoid protein (OCP), respectively. Our results suggest a multiple origin of the M–T decline and reveal a complex interplay of various known regulatory processes in maintaining the redox homeostasis of a cyanobacterial cell. In addition, they lead us to suggest that a new type of regulatory process, operating on the timescale of minutes to hours, is involved in dissipating excess light energy in cyanobacteria. 相似文献

We studied the influence of prolonged (a few weeks) and short-term (a few hours) periodical elevation of the ambient CO2 concentration ([Ca]) on the photosynthetic apparatus and carbohydrate content in the third leaf of three-week-old cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) plants. On the basis of experimental data and subsequent modeling, we revealed the limiting processes in the photosynthetic apparatus functioning: Rubisco activity, the rate of ribulose bisphosphate (CO2 acceptor) regeneration, the rate of triose phosphate utilization in the Calvin cycle, and the influence of stomata on the photosynthesis rate. An increase in soluble carbohydrate content and a decrease in starch accumulation at a short-term [Ca] elevation indicate an important role of carbohydrate accumulation and their partition between organs in the regulation of the photosynthesis. We concluded that periodic [Ca] elevation can be used to improve plant productivity. 相似文献

Background and aims
Leaf litters commonly interact during decomposition in ways that can synergistically increases rates of decay. These interactions have been linked to moisture availability, suggesting that drought could slow decomposition rates by disrupting litter interactions. Slowed decomposition may reduce competitive ability of exotic species that exploit rapid decomposition rates as part of niche construction mechanisms. Here, we evaluated the impacts of drought on interactions between native and exotic species’ litter decomposition. Methods
We considered litter mixtures of Lupinus polyphyllus (exotic N-fixing forb), Trifolium pratense (native N-fixing forb), Senecio inaequidens (exotic non-N-fixing forb), and Senecio jacobaea (native non-N-fixing forb) with the native grass Alopecurus pratensis and evaluated the difference between the observed rate of decay and the one expected based on species decomposing in monocultures. Litters were deployed in Belgium and Germany and exposed to a 56 day drought, which resembled local millennium drought (statistical recurrence of duration in local precipitation series >1000 years). Results
Litter interactions reduced mass remaining by 81% in Belgium and 15% in Germany, averaged across mixtures. Similarly, litter interactions reduced N remaining by 93% in Belgium and 14% in Germany. Drought consistently removed these interactions and resulted in additive litter decay. Litters of native and exotic species did not differ in their response to drought. Conclusions
These findings support moisture availability as a key regulator of interactions between litters during decomposition. Thus, increasing frequency of drought may slow nutrient cycling to a greater extent than previously thought.10.

Previous studies of elevated carbon dioxide concentration ([CO2]) on crop canopies have found that radiation-use efficiency is increased more than radiation-interception efficiency. It is assumed that increased radiation-use efficiency is due to changes in leaf-level physiology; however, canopy structure can affect radiation-use efficiency if leaves are displayed in a manner that optimizes their physiological capacity, even though the canopy intercepts the same amount of light. In order to determine the contributions of physiology and canopy structure to radiation-use and radiation-interception efficiency, this study relates leaf-level physiology and leaf display to photosynthetic rate of the outer canopy. We used a new imaging approach that delivers three-dimensional maps of the outer canopy during the growing season. The 3D data were used to model leaf orientation and mean photosynthetic electron transport of the outer canopy to show that leaf orientation changes did not contribute to increased radiation-use; i.e. leaves of the outer canopy showed similar diurnal leaf movements and leaf orientation in both treatments. Elevated [CO2] resulted in an increased maximum electron transport rate (ETRmax) of light reactions of photosynthesis. Modeling of canopy light interception showed that stimulated leaf-level electron transport at elevated [CO2], and not alterations in leaf orientation, was associated with stimulated radiation-use efficiency and biomass production in elevated [CO2]. This study provides proof of concept of methodology to quantify structure–function relationships in combination, allowing a quantitative estimate of the contribution of both effects to canopy energy conversion under elevated [CO2]. 相似文献

Plant communities around natural CO2 springs have been exposed to elevated CO2 levels over many generations and give us a unique opportunity to investigate the effects of long-term elevated CO2 levels on wild plants. We searched for natural CO2 springs in cool temperate climate regions in Japan and found three springs that were suitable for studying long-term responses
of plants to elevated levels of CO2: Ryuzin-numa, Yuno-kawa and Nyuu. At these CO2 springs, the surrounding air was at high CO2 concentration with no toxic gas emissions throughout the growth season, and there was natural vegetation around the springs.
At each site, high-CO2 (HC) and low-CO2 (LC) plots were established, and three dominant species at the shrub layers were used for physiological analyses. Although
the microenvironments were different among the springs, dicotyledonous species growing at the HC plots tended to have more
starch and less nitrogen per unit dry mass in the leaves than those growing at the LC plots. In contrast, monocotyledonous
species growing in the HC and LC plots had similar starch and nitrogen concentrations. Photosynthetic rates at the mean growth
CO2 concentration were higher in HC plants than LC plants, but photosynthetic rates at a common CO2 concentration were lower in HC plants. Efficiency of water and nitrogen use of leaves at growth CO2 concentration was greatly increased in HC plants. These results suggest that natural plants growing in elevated CO2 levels under cool temperate climate conditions have down-regulated their photosynthetic capacity but that they increased
photosynthetic rates and resource use efficiencies due to the direct effect of elevated CO2 concentration. 相似文献

Do short-term fluctuations in CO2 concentrations at elevated CO2 levels affect net CO2 uptake rates of plants? When exposed to 600 μl CO2 l?1, net CO2 uptake rates in shoots or leaves of seedlings of two tropical C3 tree species, teak (Tectona grandis L. f.) and barrigon [Pseudobombax septenatum (Jacq.) Dug.], increased by 28 and 52% respectively. In the presence of oscillations with half-cycles of 20 s, amplitude of ca. 170 μl CO2 l?1 and mean of 600 μl CO2 l?1, the stimulation in net CO2 uptake by the two species was reduced to 19 and 36%, respectively, i.e. the CO2 stimulation in photosynthesis associated with a change in exposure from 370 to 600 μl CO2 l?1 was reduced by a third in both species. Similar reductions in CO2-stimulated net CO2 uptake were observed in T. grandis exposed to 40-s oscillations. Rates of CO2 efflux in the dark by whole shoots of T. grandis decreased by 4.8% upon exposure of plants grown at 370 μl CO2 l?1 to 600 μl CO2 l?1. The potential implications of the observations on CO2 oscillations and dark respiration are discussed in the context of free-air CO2 enrichment (FACE) systems in which short-term fluctuations of CO2 concentration are a common feature. 相似文献

Photosynthetic sunfleck utilization potential of understory saplings growing under elevated CO<Subscript>2</Subscript> in FACE 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Few studies have evaluated elevated CO2 responses of trees in variable light despite its prevalence in forest understories and its potential importance for sapling
survival. We studied two shade-tolerant species (Acer rubrum, Cornus florida) and two shade-intolerant species (Liquidambar styraciflua, Liriodendron tulipifera) growing in the understory of a Pinus taeda plantation under ambient and ambient+200 ppm CO2 in a free air carbon enrichment (FACE) experiment. Photosynthetic and stomatal responses to artificial changes in light intensity
were measured on saplings to determine rates of induction gain under saturating light and induction loss under shade. We expected
that growth in elevated CO2 would alter photosynthetic responses to variable light in these understory saplings. The results showed that elevated CO2 caused the expected enhancement in steady-state photosynthesis in both high and low light, but did not affect overall stomatal
conductance or rates of induction gain in the four species. Induction loss after relatively short shade periods (<6 min) was
slower in trees grown in elevated CO2 than in trees grown in ambient CO2 despite similar decreases in stomatal conductance. As a result leaves grown in elevated CO2 that maintained induction well in shade had higher carbon gain during subsequent light flecks than was expected from steady-state
light response measurements. Thus, when frequent sunflecks maintain stomatal conductance and photosynthetic induction during
the day, enhancements of long-term carbon gain by elevated CO2 could be underestimated by steady-state photosynthetic measures. With respect to species differences, both a tolerant, A. rubrum, and an intolerant species, L. tulipifera, showed rapid induction gain, but A. rubrum also lost induction rapidly (c. 12 min) in shade. These results, as well as those from independent studies in the literature, show that induction dynamics
are not closely related to species shade tolerance. Therefore, it cannot be concluded that shade-tolerant species necessarily
induce faster in the variable light conditions common in understories. Although our study is the first to examine dynamic
photosynthetic responses to variable light in contrasting species in elevated CO2, studies on ecologically diverse species will be required to establish whether shade-tolerant and -intolerant species show
different photosynthetic responses in elevated CO2 during sunflecks. We conclude that elevated CO2 affects dynamic gas exchange most strongly via photosynthetic enhancement during induction as well as in the steady state.

The role of microzooplankton (MZP) in the pelagic trophodynamics is highly significant, but the responses of marine MZP to increasing CO2 levels are rather poorly understood. Hence the present study was undertaken to understand the responses of marine plankton to increasing CO2 concentrations. Natural water samples from the coastal Bay of Bengal were incubated under the ambient condition and high CO2 levels (703–711 μatm) for 5 days in May and June 2010. A significant negative correlation was obtained between phytoplankton and MZP abundance which indicated that phytoplankton community structure can considerably be controlled by MZP in this region. The average relative abundances of tintinnids under elevated CO2 levels were found to be significantly higher (68.65 ± 5.63% in May; 85.46 ± 9.56% in June) than observed in the ambient condition (35.68 ± 6.83% in May; 79 ± 5.36% in June). The observed dominance of small chain forming diatom species probably played a crucial role as they can be potentially grazed by tintinnids. This fact was strengthened by the observed high negative correlations between the relative abundance of major phytoplankton and tintinnids. Moreover, particulate organic carbon and total bacterial counts were also enhanced under elevated CO2 level and can serve as additional food source for ciliates. The observed responses of tintinnids to increasing CO2 might have multiple impacts on the energy transfer, nutrient and carbon cycling in the coastal water. The duration of the present study was relatively short and therefore further investigation on longer time scale needs to be done and might give us a better insight about phytoplankton and MZP species succession under elevated CO2 level. 相似文献

Profiles of subsurface soil CO2 concentration, soil temperature, and soil moisture, and throughfall were measured continuously during the years 2005 and
2006 in 16 locations at the free air CO2 enrichment facility situated within a temperate loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) stand. Sampling at these locations followed a 4 by 4 replicated experimental design comprised of two atmospheric CO2 concentration levels (ambient [CO2]a, ambient + 200 ppmv, [CO2]e) and two soil nitrogen (N) deposition levels (ambient, ambient + fertilization at 11.2 gN m−2 year−1). The combination of these measurements permitted indirect estimation of belowground CO2 production and flux profiles in the mineral soil. Adjacent to the soil CO2 profiles, direct (chamber-based) measurements of CO2 fluxes from the soil–litter complex were simultaneously conducted using the automated carbon efflux system. Based on the
measured soil CO2 profiles, neither [CO2]e nor N fertilization had a statistically significant effect on seasonal soil CO2, CO2 production, and effluxes from the mineral soil over the study period. Soil moisture and temperature had different effects
on CO2 concentration depending on the depth. Variations in CO2 were mostly explained by soil temperature at deeper soil layers, while water content was an important driver at the surface
(within the first 10 cm), where CO2 pulses were induced by rainfall events. The soil effluxes were equal to the CO2 production for most of the time, suggesting that the site reached near steady-state conditions. The fluxes estimated from
the CO2 profiles were highly correlated to the direct measurements when the soil was neither very dry nor very wet. This suggests
that a better parameterization of the soil CO2 diffusivity is required for these soil moisture extremes. 相似文献

The effects of high atmospheric CO2 concentration ([CO2]) on ecosystem processes have been explored using temporal facilities such as open-top-chambers and free-air CO2 enrichment. However, the effects of high [CO2] on soil properties takes decades and may not be captured by short-term experiments. Natural CO2 springs provide a unique opportunity to study the long-term effects of high [CO2]. In this study, we investigated soil properties at a natural CO2 spring. We found that the amounts of total carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) stored in the soil at the high [CO2] site exceeded those in the reference site by 60 and 30%, respectively. The effects of high [CO2] were large in the upper slope position where the canopy openness was high and plants grew faster, but no effects were detected in the lowest position where the canopy openness was lower (half of that at the upper slope position). In contrast, effects of high [CO2] on soil N dynamics, such as N mineralization and nitrification rates, did not exhibit a slope gradient. This suggests that effects of high [CO2] differed among soil stoichiometric characteristics and N dynamics. These complicated effects of high [CO2] imply that the future effects of high [CO2] on ecosystems could vary widely in conjunction with environmental conditions such as light availability and/or topographic conditions. 相似文献

Effects of elevated CO<Subscript>2</Subscript> and nitrogen on wheat growth and photosynthesis 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The effects of nitrogen [75 and 150 kg (N) ha−1] and elevated CO2 on growth, photosynthetic rate, contents of soluble leaf proteins and activities of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) and nitrate reductase (NR) were studied on wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. HD-2285) grown in open top chambers under either ambient (AC) or elevated (EC) CO2 concentration (350 ± 50, 600 ± 50 μmol mol−1) and analyzed at 40, 60 and 90 d after sowing. Plants grown under EC showed greater photosynthetic rate and were taller and attained greater leaf area along with higher total plant dry mass at all growth stages than those grown under AC. Total soluble and Rubisco protein contents decreased under EC but the activation of Rubisco was higher at EC with higher N supply. Nitrogen increased the NR activity whereas EC reduced it. Thus, EC causes increased growth and PN ability per unit uptake of N in wheat plants, even if N is limiting. 相似文献

A controlled growth chamber experiment was conducted to investigate the short-term water use and photosynthetic responses
of 30-d-old carrot seedlings to the combined effects of CO2 concentration (50–1 050 μmol mol−1) and moisture deficits (−5, −30, −55, and −70 kPa). The photosynthetic response data was fitted to a non-rectangular hyperbola
model. The estimated parameters were compared for effects of moisture deficit and elevated CO2 concentration (EC). The carboxylation efficiency (α) increased in response to mild moisture stress (−30 kPa) under EC when
compared to the unstressed control. However, moderate (−55 kPa) and extreme (−70 kPa) moisture deficits reduced α under EC.
Maximum net photosynthetic rate (P
Nmax) did not differ between mild water deficit and unstressed controls under EC. Moderate and extreme moisture deficits reduced
P
Nmax by nearly 85 % compared to controls. Dark respiration rate (R
D) showed no consistent response to moisture deficit. The CO2 compensation concentration (Γ) was 324 μmol mol−1 for −75 kPa and ranged 63–93 μmol mol−1 for other moisture regimes. Interaction between moisture deficit and EC was noticed for P
N, ratio of intercellular and ambient CO2 concentration (C
i/C
a), stomatal conductance (g
s
), and transpiration rate (E). P
N was maximum and C
i/C
a was minimum at −30 kPa moisture deficit and at C
a of 350 μmol mol−1. The g
s and E showed an inverse relationship at all moisture deficit regimes and EC. Water use efficiency (WUE) increased with moisture
deficit up to −55 kPa and declined thereafter. EC showed a positive influence towards sustaining P
N and increasing WUE only under mild moisture stress, and no beneficial effects of EC were noticed at moderate or extreme moisture
deficits. 相似文献

Stomatal conductance in mature deciduous forest trees exposed to elevated CO<Subscript>2</Subscript>

Stomatal conductance (g s) of mature trees exposed to elevated CO2 concentrations was examined in a diverse deciduous forest stand in NW Switzerland. Measurements of g s were carried out on upper canopy foliage before noon, over four growing seasons, including an exceptionally dry summer (2003). Across all species reductions in stomatal conductance were smaller than 25% most likely around 10%, with much variation among species and trees. Given the large heterogeneity in light conditions within a tree crown, this signal was not statistically significant, but the responses within species were surprisingly consistent throughout the study period. Except during a severe drought, stomatal conductance was always lower in trees of Carpinus betulus exposed to elevated CO2 compared to Carpinus trees in ambient air, but the difference was only statistically significant on 2 out of 15 days. In contrast, stomatal responses in Fagus sylvatica and Quercus petraea varied around zero with no consistent trend in relation to CO2 treatment. During the 2003 drought in the third treatment year, the CO2 effect became reversed in Carpinus, resulting in higher g s in trees exposed to elevated CO2 compared to control trees, most likely due to better water supply because of the previous soil water savings. This was supported by less negative predawn leaf water potential in CO2 enriched Carpinus trees, indicating an improved water status. These findings illustrate (1) smaller than expected CO2-effects on stomata of mature deciduous forest trees, and (2) the possibility of soil moisture feedback on canopy water relations under elevated CO2. 相似文献
