Information about external world is delivered to the brain in the form of structured in time spike trains. During further processing in higher areas, information is subjected to a certain condensation process, which results in formation of abstract conceptual images of external world, apparently, represented as certain uniform spiking activity partially independent on the input spike trains details. Possible physical mechanism of condensation at the level of individual neuron was discussed recently. In a reverberating spiking neural network, due to this mechanism the dynamics should settle down to the same uniform/ periodic activity in response to a set of various inputs. Since the same periodic activity may correspond to different input spike trains, we interpret this as possible candidate for information condensation mechanism in a network. Our purpose is to test this possibility in a network model consisting of five fully connected neurons, particularly, the influence of geometric size of the network, on its ability to condense information. Dynamics of 20 spiking neural networks of different geometric sizes are modelled by means of computer simulation. Each network was propelled into reverberating dynamics by applying various initial input spike trains. We run the dynamics until it becomes periodic. The Shannon's formula is used to calculate the amount of information in any input spike train and in any periodic state found. As a result, we obtain explicit estimate of the degree of information condensation in the networks, and conclude that it depends strongly on the net's geometric size.  相似文献

Reverberating dynamics of neural network is modeled on PC in order to illustrate possible role of inhibition as binding controller in the network. The network is composed of binding neurons. In the binding neuron model [BioSystems 48 (1998) 263], the degree of temporal coherence between synaptic inputs is decisive for triggering, and slow inhibition is expressed in terms of the degree, which is necessary for triggering. Two learning mechanisms are implemented in the network, namely, adjusting synaptic strength and/or propagation delays. By means of forced playing of external pattern, the network is taught to support dynamics with disconnected and bound patterns of activity. By choosing either high, or low inhibition, one can switch between the disconnected and bound patterns, respectively. This is interpreted as inhibition-controlled binding in the network.  相似文献

Computer simulation of a model network for the erythrocyte cytoskeleton.   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
The geometry and mechanical properties of the human erythrocyte membrane cytoskeleton are investigated by a computer simulation in which the cytoskeleton is represented by a network of polymer chains. Four elastic moduli as well as the area and thickness are predicted for the chain network as a function of temperature and the number of segments in each chain. Comparisons are made with mean field arguments to examine the importance of steric interactions in determining network properties. Applied to the red blood cell, the simulation predicts that in the bilayer plane the membrane cytoskeleton has a shear modulus of 10 +/- 2 x 10(-6) J/m2 and an areal compression modulus of 17 +/- 2 x 10(-6) J/m2. The volume compression modulus and the transverse Young's modulus of the cytoskeleton are predicted to be 1.2 +/- 0.1 x 10(3) J/m3 and 2.0 +/- 0.1 x 10(3) J/m3, respectively. Elements of the cytoskeleton are predicted to have a mean displacement from the bilayer plane of 15 nm. The simulation agrees with some, but not all, of the shear modulus measurements. The other predicted moduli have not been measured.  相似文献

The term spreading depolarization describes a wave in the gray matter of the central nervous system characterized by swelling of neurons, distortion of dendritic spines, a large change of the slow electrical potential and silencing of brain electrical activity (spreading depression). In the clinic, unequivocal electrophysiological evidence now exists that spreading depolarizations occur abundantly in individuals with aneurismal subarachnoid hemorrhage, delayed ischemic stroke after subarachnoid hemorrhage, malignant hemispheric stroke, spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage or traumatic brain injury. Spreading depolarization is induced experimentally by various noxious conditions including chemicals such as potassium, glutamate, inhibitors of the sodium pump, status epilepticus, hypoxia, hypoglycemia and ischemia, but it can can also invade healthy, naive tissue. Resistance vessels respond to it with tone alterations, causing either transient hyperperfusion (physiological hemodynamic response) in healthy tissue or severe hypoperfusion (inverse hemodynamic response, or spreading ischemia) in tissue at risk for progressive damage, which contributes to lesion progression. Therapies that target spreading depolarization or the inverse hemodynamic response may potentially treat these neurological conditions.  相似文献

This paper deals with a block diagram which describes the structure of the control of erythropoiesis by negative feedback loops. The model is transformed into an adequate simulation program using a special block-oriented programming language called ASIM (Analoge SIMulation). For both normal and diseased states of the blood forming process the dynamic responses of the erythrocytes and reticulocytes are simulated by a digital computer analysis. The computer simulation includes different forms of anemia caused by parameter variations as well as by structural alterations. Rising oscillations are obtained too in multiloop control systems containing complex paths with minor loops, which for example take into account the erythrocytic chalones. The described model shows that rising oscillations, that are unstable control loops, can be produced by changing the control-loop structure as well as by parameter changes. In case of malignant disorders such failures becoming effective in oscillations are discussed as parts of disturbed homoeostasis. The results of these studies obtained by simulation should especially stimulate scientists working in the fields of biology and medicine to new test series to verify the proposed hypothesis.  相似文献

Physiological studies of cortical spreading depression   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Cortical spreading depression (CSD) produces propagating waves of transient neuronal hyperexcitability followed by depression. CSD is initiated by K+ release following neuronal firing or electrical, mechanical or chemical stimuli. A triphasic (30-50 s) cortical potential transient accompanies localized transmembrane redistributions of K+, glutamate, Ca2+, Na+, Cl- and H+. Accumulated K+ in the restricted interstitial space can cause both further neuronal depolarisation and inward movement of K+ into astrocytes that buffers this increased extracellular K+ concentration ([K+])o. However, astrocyte interconnections may then propagate the CSD wave by K+ liberation through an opening of remote K+ channels by volume, Ca2+ or N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor activation. Changes in cerebral blood volume and in apparent water diffusion co-efficient (ADC) accompanying CSD were first studied using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in whole lissencephalic brains. Diffusion-weighted echoplanar imaging in gyrencephalic brains went on to demonstrate CSD features that paralleled classical migraine aura. The ADC activity persisted minutes/hours post KCl stimulus. Pixelwise analyses distinguished single primary events and multiple, spatially restricted, slower propagating, secondary events whose detailed features varied with the nature of the originating stimulus. These ADC changes varied reciprocally with T2*-weighted (i.e. referring to spin-spin relaxation times) waveforms reflecting local blood flow. There followed prolonged decreases in cerebral blood flow culminating in late cerebrovascular changes blocked by the antimigraine agent sumatriptan. CSD phenomena have possible translational significance for human migraine aura and other cerebral pathologies such as the peri-infarct depolarisation events that follow ischaemia and brain injury.  相似文献

A coarse-grained model of polypeptide chains confined in a slit formed by two parallel impenetrable surfaces was studied. The chains were flexible heteropolymers (polypeptides) built of two kinds of united atoms—hydrophobic and hydrophilic. The positions of the united atoms were restricted to the vertices of a [310] lattice. The force field consisted of a rigorous excluded volume, a long-distance potential between a pair of amino-acid residues and a local preference for forming secondary structure (helices). The properties of the chains were studied at a wide range of temperatures from good to bad solvent conditions. Monte-Carlo simulations were carried out using the algorithm based on the chain’s local changes of conformation and employing the Replica Exchange technique. The influence of the chain length, the distances between the confining surfaces, the temperature and the force field on the dimension and the structure of chains were studied. It was shown that the presence of the confinement chain complicates the process of the chain collapse to low-temperature structures. For some conditions, one can find a rapid decrease of chain size and a second transition indicated by the rapid decrease of the total energy of the system. Ethanol fermentation with cell recycling: Computer simulation   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A mathematical model for glucose-to-ethanol fermentation at high yeast cell concentrations was developed. The feasibility of improving fermenter productivity over that of a conventional continuous-stirred-tank fermenter by using multiple stage reactors and yeast cell recycling was predicted by computer simulation. The optimum size distribution for multistage fermentors was obtained for different glucose feedstream concentrations and different glucose conversion levels. Productivity increases over a single-stage reactor ranged from 1.2-2.0 times. The use of yeast cell recycling to increase cell concentration and productivity increases of over 4.0 times that of a system without recycling.  相似文献

Realistic computer simulations of the experimentally established local spinal cord neural network generating swimming in the lamprey have been performed. Populations of network interneurons were used in which cellular properties, like cell size and membrane conductance including voltage dependent ion channels were randomly distributed around experimentally obtained mean values, as were synaptic conductances (kainate/AMPA, NMDA, glycine) and delays. This population model displayed more robust burst activity over a wider frequency range than the more simple subsample model used previously, and the pattern of interneuronal activity was appropriate. The strength of the reciprocal inhibition played a very important role in the regulation of burst frequency, and just by changing the inhibitory bias the entire physiological range could be covered. At the lower frequency range of bursting the segmental excitatory interneurons provide stability as does the activation of voltage dependent NMDA receptors. Spike frequency adaptation by means of summation of afterhyperpolarization (AHP) serves as a major burst terminating factor, and at lower rates the membrane properties conferred by the NMDA receptor activation. The lateral interneurons were not of critical importance for the burst termination. They may, however, be of particular importance for inducing a rapid burst termination during for instance steering and righting reactions. Several cellular factors combine to provide a secure and stable motor pattern in the entire frequency range.  相似文献
