Two experiments were designed to investigate release patterns of oxytocin into plasma during oestrus and the early luteal phase. In Exp. 1, blood samples were collected from 5 ewes every 30 min for 10 h during 6 days around oestrus and the early luteal phase. During oestrus concentrations of oxytocin were generally low (1.27 +/- 0.54 pg/ml; mean +/- s.d.) but with occasional pulses up to 6 pg/ml. By Day 5 mean basal concentrations had risen to 4.5 +/- 2.1 pg/ml with a fluctuating release pattern. In Exp. 2, a method was developed for continuous blood sampling from conscious, unrestrained ewes. On the predicted day of oestrus following an untreated oestrous cycle, 8-ml blood samples were collected every minute for two 35-min periods (8 ewes: 16 sampling periods). For 6 ewes a ram was introduced to the pen for part of this time, and resulting behaviour was recorded. Additional blood samples were assayed for LH and progesterone to determine the stage of the cycle. Overall mean oxytocin concentrations ranged from 1.5 +/- 0.53 to 6.8 +/- 5.25 pg/ml in different animals. Ewes which were both in oestrus and exposed to the ram showed a pulsatile oxytocin release pattern consisting of low baseline concentrations with short-duration pulses superimposed (duration 1-4 min; amplitude 2.5-31.7 pg/ml; frequency 3.18/h). Coitus was not temporally associated with pulsatile release. However, the importance of the presence of the ram was indicated by total separation of 2 oestrous ewes from the ram until after experimentation. In these animals only 1 pulse of oxytocin was detected in 2.7 h of sampling. It is concluded that, although mean oxytocin concentrations at oestrus were low, short duration pulses were released into the plasma at this time. This effect may be dependent on the presence of a ram.  相似文献

Ewes in oestrus, besides being receptive to rams, develop an active search for them. We performed two experiments to determine if oestrous ewes prefer: (1) high or low sexual-performance rams, and (2) 2-year-old or aged (>8-years-old) rams. In the first experiment, the preference of ewes for rams with high or low sexual performances was compared in 16 tests. In the second experiment, 17 tests were performed comparing ewes’ preference for aged rams (>8-years-old) or young rams (2-years-old). In each test, two rams were tied at equal distances from the point of entrance of the ewe, with a maximum mobility for each ram of 2 m. The first approach to a ram, the quantity of approaches toward each ram (less than one body length), and the total time that the ewe remained near each ram were registered during 5 min. Oestrous ewes did not display any preference according to sexual performance of rams, but spent significantly more time (P = 0.02), and did it in more tests (P = 0.025), with young than with aged rams. Ewes also tended to approach first (P = 0.07), and more times in more tests (P = 0.06), to young than to aged rams. We conclude that ram's sexual performance seems not to influence oestrous ewes preference, and that ewes’ prefer young (2-years-old) rather than aged rams (>8-years-old).  相似文献

After lambing in late November, oestrus and ovulation were induced by using a CIDR device and PMSG in early weaned (N = 13) or lactating (N = 14) Border Leicester x Scottish Blackface ewes between 23 and 29 days after parturition. Ewes were intrauterine inseminated under laparoscopic visualization 54-55 h after CIDR-device withdrawal and eggs recovered on Day 3 of the cycle. Ovum recovery and fertilization rates were higher in lactating than in early weaned ewes, with fertilization being achieved as early as 24 days post partum in both groups. Of the 7 early weaned and 11 lactating ewes yielding eggs, fertilization occurred in 4 and 7 ewes respectively. A total of 20 embryos were transferred to the normal uterine environment of 15 recipient ewes in which the interval from parturition was greater than 150 days. Pregnancies were successfully established in 9 recipient ewes, resulting in the birth of 10 viable lambs. Prolactin concentrations were significantly higher (P less than 0.001) in lactating than in early weaned ewes throughout the study. Nevertheless, normal luteal function (as assessed by daily progesterone concentrations) was exhibited by 12 of 14 lactating and 8 of 13 early weaned ewes. Two post-partum donors in which the corpora lutea completely failed to secrete progesterone yielded fertilized eggs which developed to term when transferred to a normal uterine environment. The results show that sheep oocytes can be fertilized using laparoscopic intrauterine insemination as early as 24 days after parturition and that the resulting embryos are viable when recovered on Day 3 after oestrus and transferred to a normal uterine environment.  相似文献

Duration of oestrus, time of ovulation and hormone profiles for progesterone and LH in prepubertal, pubertal and mature Javanese thin-tail sheep were studied at synchronized oestrus following progestagen-PMSG treatment and at the first natural oestrus after synchronization. The ewe lambs responded to progestagen-PMSG treatment by showing earlier onset of oestrus and an earlier and higher peak of LH concentration than mature ewes. For pre-pubertal, pubertal and mature ewes the mean LH peaks were 49.9, 43.9 and 37.9 ng/ml (P>0.05) at mean intervals of 7.5, 8.4 and 16.5 h (P < 0.05), respectively, after onset of oestrus. Duration of oestrus was 41.2 h in pubertal lambs and averaged 37.5 h in the other two groups (P>0.05). Except in one mature ewe, ovulation occurred between 24 and 36 h after onset of oestrus and the majority ovulated at around the end of oestrus. The corpora lutea developed normally, as indicated by plasma-progesterone changes. The patterns of plasma-progesterone changes were similar in all three groups, though the concentrations were lower in the ewe lambs. At the first natural oestrus after synchronization, mature ewes showed longer (P>0.05) oestrus (31.5 vs. 24.3 h), longer time interval from onset of oestrus to the LH peak (16.0 vs. 12.0 h) and from the LH peak to ovulation (21.0 vs. 19.6 h) than peri-pubertal lambs. Six of eight pre-pubertal lambs did not ovulate at their first natural oestrus, resulting in a conception rate of 11% for that group, while in pubertal lambs and mature ewes conception rates were 70% and 100%, respectively.  相似文献

Sixteen pinealectomized and 19 unoperated ewes were exposed to constant light for about 4 weeks before and 4 weeks after lambing. Six ram lambs born to unoperated ewes were implanted s.c. with melatonin sachets while 8 ram lambs were implanted with empty sachets. The 8 ram lambs born to pinealectomized dams also received empty implants. Ewes and lambs were then returned to the field. Analysis of weekly blood samples indicated that prolactin secretion was significantly decreased in the ram lambs with empty implants between 44-51 weeks of age whereas lambs treated with melatonin failed to show a significant change during development. All 3 groups of rams had elevated LH levels between 7 and 17 weeks of age, and a second period of high LH between 27 and 40 weeks. There were no significant differences between groups in the patterns of FSH secretion; FSH was highest between 7 and 17 weeks of age, and again between 27 and 40 weeks of age. Plasma testosterone levels in all groups increased gradually between 4 and 35 weeks. Between 38 and 48 weeks of age testosterone concentrations were markedly elevated in all groups. Growth was not affected by melatonin treatment. These results indicate that neonatal melatonin treatment has subtle endocrine effects; whether these effects are sufficient to compromise fertility in the ram, however, remains to be established.  相似文献

We tested whether short periods of increased nutrition will improve ovulation rate and prolificacy, irrespective of the method used to synchronise the cycles of the ewes. In Experiment 1, we used 138 Corriedale ewes to evaluate two factors: synchronization treatment (sponges versus a single injection of prostaglandin) and type of pasture (native versus improved with Lotus corniculatus). Ewes were mated at the end of the grazing period and prolificacy was evaluated at lambing. Grazing Lotus corniculatus for 12 days tended to increase the number of twin lambs born (P=0.09). The percentage of ewes showing oestrus during a 9-day period was similar among synchronization treatments. Animals in Experiments 2 (n=282) and 3 (n=288) were allocated to a control group or a group fed a supplement of corn grain and soybean meal for 7 days. Ewes received 2 prostaglandin injections and the supplement was fed from Days 11 to 17 after the second prostaglandin. Ovulation rate was measured in 65 (Experiment 2) and 61 (Experiment 3) ewes that were confirmed to have consumed the supplement and showed oestrus in a 4-day period. The supplement increased ovulation rate by 14% in both experiments (P<0.05). We conclude that Corriedale ewes can respond with increases in prolificacy to a 12-day period grazing Lotus corniculatus and in ovulation rate to 7 days feeding with a supplement rich in energy and protein. Moreover, in these studies, prostaglandin was as effective as sponges for synchronising oestrus, an important factor in future decisions about hormonal management of fertility.  相似文献

A total of 415 fat tailed ewes were randomly assigned to two groups to assess the effect of duration of melengestrol acetate (MGA) (9 versus 12d) administration on reproductive parameters associated with laparoscopic artificial insemination. At the end of MGA treatment, ewes in each group were subdivided and inseminated with one of two different insemination doses (10×10(7) or 20×10(7) sperm per 0.5 ml insemination dose) of fresh diluted semen. Inseminations were carried out 11-18 h after first detected estrus. Ewes were screened for their return to oestrus from 10 to 21 days post AI and inseminated at their returned oestrus. Pregnancy diagnosis was done from approximately 55 days after insemination in both synchronized and return estrus. For short (9-day) and long (12-day) term MGA treated groups, estrus rates were 62% versus 89% (P<0.0001), respectively. Ewes (n=115) that returned to estrus were inseminated (7-11h after estrus detection) with fresh diluted semen at different doses (20×10(7) or 40×10(7) or 60×10(7) sperm per 0.5 ml insemination dose). Pregnancy rates were 41% and 44% for short term and long term MGA treated ewes, respectively. Pregnancy rate of ewes which returned to oestrus was 53.4%. There was a significant (P<0.05) increase in pregnancy rates (38-52% for 11-16 h; 63% for 17-18 h) when insemination was held at 17-18 h after first detected estrus following MGA treatments. Pregnancy rates were found to be similar in ewes inseminated with 10×10(7) (36%) or 20×10(7) (47%) motile spermatozoa at first AI, and 20×10(7) (44%) or 40×10(7) (59%) or 60×10(7)(48%) at second AI. It was concluded that short term MGA treated ewes were recorded with lower estrus rates but was similar to pregnancy rates with long term MGA treatment. Acceptable pregnancy rates were achieved in MGA induced estrus when insemination is conducted at 17-18 h after estrus onset and with 20×10(7) sperm per insemination dose.  相似文献

The aim of this experiment with ram and ewe lambs was to test the hypothesis that there are consistent individual differences in Luteinising Hormone (LH) response to Gonadotrophin Releasing Hormone (GnRH).Pre-puberal Border-Leicester × Merino lambs (15 of each sex) aged 9 weeks were challenged with either 0, 30 or 60 μg synthetic GnRH each month for 7 months (December to June). The lambs were then rested from this monthly routine until they were challenged an eighth time in September at 48 weeks of age. Luteinising Hormone response (area under LH release curve) was measured each month and the repeatability of individual LH responses calculated. There was a significant interaction (P < 0.01) between treatment month and sex reflecting a fall in LH response by ram lambs after a peak in February, while at the same time responses by ewe lambs increased to peak again in May. LH response also increased with GnRH dose (30 vs. 60 μg; P < 0.05).Responses by individual lambs were ranked 1 to 5 each month within sex and GnRH doses (30 and 60 μg only). Highest ranked lambs had LH responses 1.4 to 7.0 times larger than lowest ranked lambs. Repeatability of rank between months was poor in all groups except ewe lambs given 60 μg GnRH, where three of the five lambs repeated a particular rank at 5 of the 8 sample months. However, the repeatability of response in this group was not considered to be sufficient to reject the null hypothesis. It was concluded that if consistent individual differences do exist they may be subtle and easily masked by factors such as GnRH dose, sex, age and season.  相似文献

After lambing forty-five ewes were allocated to three groups, two of sixteen and one of thirteen ewes. The lambs of the two groups of sixteen ewes were weaned on Day 1 after lambing and the ewes were fed a diet of 100% (Group H) or 50% (Group R) of maintenance energy requirements. The thirteen ewes in the third group (Group L) suckled twin lambs and were fed freely. During the first 3 weeks after lambing, oestrus was observed for 11/16 (Group H) and 8/16 (Group R) ewes; of the ewes which had shown oestrus in the two groups, ovulation occurred in 5/8 and 5/7 respectively. Only 1/13 Group-L ewes showed oestrus and ovulated during the same period. The mean plasma concentrations of progesterone and LH were unaffected by the treatments and were around 0-4 and 1-5 ng/ml, respectively. Restricted feeding had no effect on oestrus, ovulation or the hormone levels during the oestrus cycle following synchronization. The onset of oestrus and the start of the preovulatory discharge of LH were 3 and 6 hr later, respectively, in the lactating ewes (Group L) than in those in Groups H and R. Ewes in Group L also had a higher ovulation rate, 2-8 +/- 0-2 versus 2-1 +/- 0-2 (P less than 0-05). Restricted feeding reduced the number of ewes lambing; only 1/11 ewes in Group R, considered to have conceived because of the presence of high progesterone levels 17 days after mating, subsequently lambed compared with 6/12 in Group H and 5/9 in Group L.  相似文献

In three experiments, the onset of oestrus, time of ovulation and lambing after intrauterine insemination with frozen-thawed semen were examined following synchronisation of oestrus using intravaginal progestagen-impregnated sponges (inserted for 12 days) and an injection of PMSG at sponge removal.

The number (and percentage) of ewes detected in oestrus 12, 24, 36, 48, 60 and 72 h after sponge removal was 1 (0.3), 2 (0.6), 17 (5.2), 120 (36.7), 65 (20.0) and 10 (3.1) respectively. One hundred and twelve ewes (34.3%) remained unmarked. Egg fertilisation rates were not different between ewes irrespective of time of onset of oestrus or whether or not ewes were marked.

The median time of ovulation with respect to sponge removal (with 95% fiducial limits) for ewes joined with vasectomised rams (10:1) at spronge removal (teased ewes) was 55.8 h (54.61–57.09) and for unteased ewes 59.7 h (58.27–61.12).

In the third experiment, a total of 394 ewes were inseminated by laparoscopy with frozen-thawed semen. The percentage of ewes lambing and lambs born per ewe inseminated, and number of lambs born per ewe lambing for inseminations 48, 60, 72 and 78 h after sponge removal were 45.9, 57.7 and 1.25; 55.1, 72.0 and 1.31; 57.4, 80.9 and 1.41; and 39.3, 60.7 and 1.54, and for 59 control ewes receiving fresh semen by cervical insemination 47.5, 69.5 and 1.46 respectively. The lambing data after insemination with frozen semen was not different to that of the controls. The percentage of ewes lambing and lambs born per ewe inseminated increased with time of insemination at 48, 60 and 72 h (linear, P < 0.01) but was lower for inseminations at 78 h after sponge removal. Number of lambs born per ewe lambing increased with time of insemination after sponge removal (linear, P < 0.05).  相似文献

Fifteen pinealectomized and 15 unoperated ewes were exposed to constant light for 3 weeks before and 10 weeks after lambing. Fourteen pinealectomized and 15 unoperated ewes were allowed to lamb outdoors. Five ewe lambs born in constant light to the 2 groups of dams were pinealectomized at 10 weeks of age. Ewes and lambs were then returned to the field. Puberty (determined by weekly progesterone analysis) was significantly delayed (P less than 0.05) in the pinealectomized ewe lambs. Median pubertal age in pineal-intact ewe lambs was 37 weeks compared to 49 weeks in pinealectomized lambs. Constant light during the first 10 weeks of life had no effect upon puberty onset nor did the pineal status of the dam. Control lambs entered seasonal anoestrus at the time pinealectomized ewe lambs were entering puberty. Pinealectomized lambs entered anoestrus at the same time as control lambs were beginning their second breeding season. These results confirm a key role of pineal-mediated hormonal signals in the control of puberty in the sheep.  相似文献

The fertility of ram spermatozoa cryopreserved prior to, and following, sex-sorting by flow cytometry was assessed after insemination of mature Merino ewes at a synchronised estrus. Ewes were inseminated with spermatozoa from three rams, split into four treatment groups: 50 x 10(6) motile non-sorted, frozen-thawed (Control50), 15 x 10(6) motile non-sorted, frozen-thawed (Control15), 15 x 10(6) motile sex-sorted, frozen-thawed (SF15) or 15 x 10(6) motile frozen-thawed, sex-sorted, re-frozen-thawed (FSF15) ram spermatozoa. Separation of SF15 and FSF15 treatments into X- and Y-chromosome-bearing populations was achieved using a high-speed sperm sorter. The percentage of ewes lambing after insemination was similar for Control15 (36/74; 48.6%), SF15 (35/76; 46.1%) and FSF15 (26/72; 36.1%) groups (P>0.05). A higher percentage of ewes produced lambs in the Control50 (38/70; 54.3%) than the FSF15 group (P<0.05). Fifty-one of the 55 (92.7%) lambs derived from fresh, sex-sorted frozen-thawed spermatozoa were of the predicted sex, as were 41/43 (95.3%) lambs derived from frozen-thawed, sex-sorted, re-frozen-thawed spermatozoa. This study demonstrated for the first time in any species that frozen-thawed spermatozoa, after sex-sorting and a second cryopreservation step, are capable of producing offspring of the predicted sex following artificial insemination.  相似文献

The effect of prolificacy on mother–young mutual recognition is still largely unknown in sheep. The aim of the present study was to investigate the ability of prolific ewes to develop an exclusive bond with their neonate and to recognize each other from alien subjects. Observations were performed on 11 D’man and 16 Romanov ewes with, respectively, 19 and 37 of their lambs. Maternal selectivity was tested at 24 h postpartum during two consecutive periods of 3 min. All mothers accepted their own lambs at suckling, while 21 out of 27 (78%) rejected the alien, thus displaying mostly selective nursing. To assess mother–young recognition, a two-choice test was performed at 36 h postpartum. Ewes clearly preferred their own lambs to an alien lamb and behavioral differences were not found between mothers of small (singletons and twins) and large litters (triplets and quadruplets). Romanov ewes reached their own lambsmore rapidly and spent more time near them than D’man ewes. Lambs from small litters, in particular light lambs, clearly preferred their mothers to an alien dam; however, both light and heavy lambs in large litters did not discriminate between the two stimulus ewes. D’man lambs clearly preferred their mothers to an alien dam; in contrast, such a preference was not as clearly demonstrated in Romanov lambs.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the relative importance of seasonal changes in ovulation rate, fertilization rate and embryo survival as the cause of reduced lambing rates in ewes mated in February compared with those mated in November. The study was conducted at 57 degrees N using mature Mule ewes and Suffolk rams. Sixty ewes were allocated equally to five groups: unbred (UB) or mated at a natural oestrus during November (N) or February (F) by natural (N) or cervical artificial (A) insemination. Groups were maintained separately at pasture supplemented with hay. A raddled vasectomized or non-vasectomized ram was present with UB, NN and NA groups from 26 October 1995 to 1 January 1996 and with UB, FN and FA groups from 25 January 1996 to 31 March 1996. Ewes marked by the ram were recorded twice a day, and those in groups NN, NA, FN and FA were inseminated at their second behavioural oestrus. For all ewes, blood samples were obtained once a day from introduction of the vasectomized rams until 30 days after mating (groups NN, NA, FN and FA) or 20 days after the first oestrus (group UB), and ovulation rate was measured by laparoscopy 7 days after the first oestrus. For ewes in groups NN, NA, FN and FA, ovulation rate was measured again after the second oestrus and ova were recovered from six ewes per group for assessment of fertilization before autotransfer. Pregnancy and lambing rates were recorded at term. Mean (+/- SE) dates of the first recorded oestrus for ewes in groups NN, NA and UB, and FN, FA and UB were 4 +/- 1.1 November and 4 +/- 0.9 February, respectively, and intervals between the first and second oestrus were 16 +/- 0.2 and 17 +/- 0.3 days (P < 0.01), respectively. Ovulation rates were 2.6 +/- 0.08 and 2.0 +/- 0.05 (P < 0.001), and peripheral progesterone concentrations during the luteal phase were 8.5 +/- 0.25 and 7.6 +/- 0.31 ng ml-1 (P < 0.05), for November and February, respectively. The difference in peripheral progesterone concentration was not solely attributable to the difference in ovulation rate. There was no significant effect of month or method of insemination, or of embryo recovery and autotransfer procedures on pregnancy rates and the proportion of ewes that became pregnant were NN 0.92, NA 0.83, FN 0.67 and FA 0.75. For ewes undergoing embryo recovery and autotransfer, ova recovered per corpus luteum were 1.00, 0.93, 1.00 and 0.92, fertilized ova per ovum recovered were 0.69, 0.92, 1.00 and 0.83, and lambs born per corpus luteum were 0.62, 0.79, 0.78 and 0.58 for NN, NA, FN and FA groups, respectively. There were no significant seasonal effects on fertilization rate or embryo survival. It is concluded that a seasonal decline in ovulation rate is the primary cause of reduced lambing rates in ewes mated in February compared with those mated in November. Pregnancy rates were high after mating in both periods and were not enhanced by the use of cervical insemination.  相似文献

The mean duration of oestrus, ovulation rate, duration of the preovulatory LH discharge, time interval between sponge removal and beginning of the LH discharge, total LH discharged, maximum LH value observed and the concentration of progesterone in the peripheral plasma during the luteal phase of the oestrous cycle was similar in Galway adult ewes and 8-month-old ewe lambs after treatment with intravaginal sponges containing 30 mg cronolone for 12 days and injection of 500 i.u. PMSG. The interval between sponge removal and the onset of oestrus was shorter for adults than for ewe lambs; the interval between the onset of oestrus and the beginning of the LH discharge was longer in adults. During the period 12-36 h after sponge removal the mean plasma total oestrogen concentration was significantly higher in lambs than in adults. In a separate study of the time of ovulation in Galway ewe lambs given the same progestagen-PMSG treatment, ovulation did not occur in any lamb before 17 h after the onset of oestrus and the majority ovulated close to the end of oestrus.  相似文献

Ewes of the Préalpes-du-Sud breed (n=112) were mated with fertile rams and were used to investigate the effect of the presence of vasectomized rams during pregnancy on reproductive outcomes. Ewes in the control group (n=56) were isolated from rams during the whole period of pregnancy, whereas those in the experimental group (n=56) were kept with vasectomized rams from day 10 post-mating until lambing. At day 10 post-mating, a series of blood samples was collected every 15 min for 8 h from five control ewes and five experimental ewes to determine their patterns of LH secretion. The introduction of the ram was associated with a rapid increase of pulsatile LH release. The lag between the introduction of the ram and the onset of the first episodic LH release was less than 15 min. The mean(±sem) number of LH pulses/4 h after the introduction of the ram (2.8±0.4) was significantly higher (P<0.01) than that observed/4 h before the introduction of the ram (1.4±0.2). Although more ewes were pregnant in the control group (87.5%) than in the ram-exposed group (82.1%), the difference was not significant. The presence of rams did not affect gestation length (145.8 days), overall lamb mortality (3.5%) or birth weights of single (3.96 kg), twin (3.24 kg) or triplet (2.59 kg) lambs. The proportion of ewes with multiple births in the control group (69.4%) was significantly greater (P<0.05) than that in the ram-exposed ewes (47.8%). The ewes in the control group had significantly more (P<0.01) twin lambs born alive (72.3%) than the ewes in the ram-exposed group (50.0%). In conclusion, the presence of vasectomized rams during early pregnancy affected the incidence of multiple births but did not affect pregnancy rate or gestation length. The altered fertility of ewes exposed to vasectomized rams may reflect changes in embryonic loss during early pregnancy.  相似文献

Rasa Aragonesa ewes were used to evalutate whether treatment with melatonin implants in spring could modify: (i) the response to the male effect in terms of oestrous behaviour and ovulation rate; and (ii) the maintenance of sexual activity and ovulation rate at medium term, i.e. over the next 306 days. On 12 April, 42 ewes were divided into two groups, with (M; n = 21) or without (C; n = 21) a subcutaneous implant containing 18 mg melatonin. On 17 May (day 0), three aproned rams were introduced to each group to induce a ram effect. Ewes were observed for oestrus daily. The rams were removed 40 days later after which one aproned ram was introduced daily. Oestrous detection continued until 28 February, 306 days after the first male-female contact. The ovulation rate was determined by endoscopy in the first three cycles after ram introduction and in September-October and January. Progesterone was assayed from blood samples taken on 6 May, 10 and from day 0 to day 22 after ram introduction. Luteal activity before ram introduction was seen in 33% (M) and 29 (C)% of the ewes, respectively. Significantly more M ewes showed oestrous behaviour during the first 40 days after ram introduction (M: 100%; C: 62%; P < 0.01). Similar differences were observed for ewes anovulatory at ram introduction (M: 100%, C: 47%; P < 0.01). These differences were maintained over the three oestrous cycles in both groups. Treatment with melatonin implants was without detrimental effect on cyclic functions in the following breeding season, after seasonal anoestrus. Melatonin treatment significantly increased (P < 0.05) the mean ovulation rate of the first (1.62 +/- 0.11 versus 1.31 +/- 0.13), second (1.78 +/- 0.15 versus 1.36 +/- 0.15) and third cycles (M: 1.73 +/- 0.12 versus C: 1.27 +/- 0.14). There was a significant interaction between the effects of cyclicity at day 0 and melatonin treatment on the ovulation rate in the first cycle (P < 0.05). The mean ovulation rates of both groups were similar at the beginning (September) and middle (January) of the subsequent breeding season. Overall, the results confirmed that melatonin implants, combined with the ram effect, improved the reproductive parameters of reduced-seasonality ewes during spring mating, without impairing sexual activity or ovulation rate during the subsequent breeding season.  相似文献

A study was conducted to determine the timing of ovulation relative to the onset of oestrus and the preovulatory LH surge in fallow deer. Mature fallow does were randomly allocated to two treatments (N = 10 per treatment) designed to synchronize oestrus on or about 17 May. Does assigned to Group 1 (prostaglandin-induced oestrus) each initially received single intravaginal CIDR [Controlled Internal Drug Release] devices for 13 days followed by an i.m. injection of 750 mg cloprostenol on Day 12 (15 May) of the subsequent luteal cycle. Does assigned to Group 2 (progesterone-induced oestrus) each received CIDR devices for 13 days, with withdrawal occurring on 15 May. All does were run with crayon-harnessed bucks (10:1 ratio) from the start of synchronization (18:00 h 15 May). Ten does (5 per group) were blood sampled via indwelling jugular cannulae every 2 h for 72 h from cloprostenol injection or CIDR device withdrawal and the plasma was analysed for concentrations of progesterone and LH by radioimmunoassay. Does within each treatment were randomly allocated to an ovarian examination time of 12, 16, 20 or 24 h after the onset of oestrus. Laparoscopy was repeated at 12-h intervals until ovulation was recorded. The ovaries of does failing to exhibit oestrus were examined 72 and 86 h after cloprostenol injection or CIDR device withdrawal. A total of 17 does were observed to exhibit oestrus at a mean (+/- s.e.m.) interval from treatment of 44.6 +/- 3.6 h for Group 1 (N = 9) and 34.1 +/- 2.5 h for Group 2 (N = 8).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Progestagen-impregnated vaginal sponges + PMSG were used to synchronize oestrus in crossbred adult ewes which were inseminated 56 h after sponge removal with 0.5 ml diluted semen containing 400, 200, 100, 50 or 25 x 10(6) spermatozoa per insemination. The diluent was skim milk-citrate or pooled seminal plasma. There was no difference in reproductive performance due to the insemination medium. Fertility (no. of ewes lambing) after insemination of 400 or 200 x 10(6) spermatozoa was 68% and was similar to that observed after natural service at progestagen-induced oestrus. When less than or equal to 100 x 10(6) spermatozoa were inseminated, fertility fell markedly and the number of lambs per ewe inseminated decreased. A decrease in litter size also occurred. The data indicate that insemination of 200 x 10(6) spermatozoa, i.e. less than 10% of the number in a single ram ejaculate, allows normal conception rates in progestagen-treated ewes.  相似文献

Ram lambs (7–8 months old) and mature rams (19–20 months old) were used to evaluate the effect of classification levels of male sexual performance on reproductive performance of ewes during spring breeding. In Exp. 1, sexually active ram lambs with high (1.8±0.3; n=5) and low (0.9±0.2; n=5) sexual performance scores (HP and LP; mean±S.E.M.) were used in single sire breeding pens. Ewes (n=305) were stratified by age and assigned to 10 pens for 34 days starting in late March. For Exps. 2 and 3, two replicates were conducted for 2 years with sexually active mature rams in a single sire mating scheme. For Exp. 2, HP rams (n=5) averaged 3.6±0.2 ejaculations and LP rams (n=7) 1.8±0.2 ejaculations for sexual performance scores based on nine, 30 min serving capacity tests (SCT). Polypay ewes (n=152 to 153 per year) were stratified by age and assigned to pens each year for 34–38 days starting in late March for years 1 and 2. For Exp. 3, HP rams (n=6) averaged 3.7±0.1 ejaculations and LP rams (n=10) 2.3±0.1 ejaculations for sexual performance scores based on 18, 30 min SCT. Polypay ewes (n=229 in year 3 and n=244 in year 4) were stratified by age and assigned to pens each year for 34 days starting in late March. In Exp. 1, lambing rates for ewes bred to HP versus LP ram lambs did not differ (65.8 versus 53.0; P=0.20). Prolificacy tended (P=0.06) to be increased by 0.1 lambs in ewes bred by LP ram lambs. Total number of lambs born per ewe present at lambing, and lambing distribution were not altered by HP and LP ram lambs. In Exp. 2, lambing rates for fall-lambing ewes bred to mature HP or LP rams did not differ (58.1 versus 60.1; P=0.78). In Exp. 3, lambing rates for fall-lambing ewes bred to mature HP or LP rams did not differ (74.3 versus 69.0; P=0.35). There was no difference (P>0.10) between years for Exp. 2 or Exp. 3, and mature HP and LP rams did not affect the other reproductive variables monitored. Analyses of the combined data for Exps. 2 and 3 indicated only a year difference (P<0.001) in lambing rates and total lambs born. Present studies indicate that different sexual performance classifications for ram lambs and mature rams did not alter lambing rates or distribution of lambing of Polypays bred in late March to April. These results indicate that HP and LP, sexually active, Polypay rams and ram lambs with average to high quality semen can provide a source of rams for spring breeding Polypays in ambient conditions and that there was no advantage to using HP over sexually active LP ram lambs or rams.  相似文献
