We studied the diet of 50 individuals of Hyalella sp. collected in the karstic headwaters of a high‐altitude Andean river (3817 m a.s.l. Peru) in four different habitats: macrophytes, bryophytes, leaf litter, and layers of travertine. The gut content analysis showed a dominance of fine particulate organic matter (FPOM) in most habitats – layers of travertine (69.5%), Myriophylum (58.5%) and bryophytes (56.8%) – except for individuals collected in leaf litter where coarse particulate organic matter (CPOM) represented 68% of gut content, which indicates a high trophic flexibility of Hyalella sp. Likewise, in an experiment with feeding chambers in situ during three days, twenty individuals of Hyalella sp. presented a higher consumption of leaf litter of native species (Polylepis sp.) (0.025 mg/day) than those of an introduced species (Eucalyptus globulus) (0.008 mg/day). (© 2011 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

Abstract

Phytoremediation by aquatic macrophytes is a promising technology with higher efficiency and no energy consumption. For this purpose, two macrophytes (Pistia stratiotes, Eichhornia crassipes), and an alga (Oedogonium sp.) were used to treat textile effluents rich in COD, BOD, dyes, and heavy metals (Pb, Fe, Cd, Cu). The aim of the study was to focus on comparative phytoremediation potential of these species by their metal removal capability. During 7?days experiment (day 0–day 6), the results showed that Oedogonium sp. was the best for COD removal and decolorization. Eichhornia crassipes was the best for BOD and heavy metal removal and proves more efficient than Pistia stratiotes and Oedogonium sp. However, Pistia stratiotes was found to accumulate more concentrations of Pb and Fe than Eichhornia stratiotes.  相似文献

This study evaluated the bioremediation potential of two marine microalgae Chlorella sp. and Phormidium sp., both individually and in consortium, to reduce various pollutants in tannery wastewater (TW). The microalgae were grown in hazardous 100% TW for 20 days, and the reductions in biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorous (TP), chromium (Cr) and total dissolved solids (TDS) of the wastewater monitored periodically. Both marine isolates reduced the BOD and COD by ≥90% in the consortium and by over 80% individually. Concentrations of TN and TP were reduced by 91.16% and 88%, respectively, by the consortium. Removal/biosorption efficiencies for chromium ranged from 90.17–94.45%. Notably, the TDS, the most difficult to deal with, were reduced by >50% within 20 days by the consortium. The novel consortium developed in this study reduced most of the ecologically harmful components in the TW to within the permissible limits of discharge in about 5 to 15 days of treatment. Thus, both the tested marine strains of Chlorella and Phormidium sp. are promising for bioremediating/detoxifying TW and adequately improve the water quality for safe discharge into open water bodies, in particular when used as a consortium.

In this study, we used a two-dimensional (2D) mechanistic mathematical model in order to evaluate the relative contribution of different microbial reactions to organic matter removal (in terms of COD) in horizontal subsurface-flow constructed wetlands that treated urban wastewater. We also used the model to analyse the effect of increasing or decreasing the organic loading rate (changing the hydraulic loading rate (HLR) at a constant influent organic matter concentration, or changing the organic matter concentration at a constant HLR) on both the removal efficiency and the relative importance of the microbial reactions. The model is based on the code RetrasoCodeBright, which we modified to include the main microbial processes related to organic matter and nitrogen transformations in the wetlands: hydrolysis, aerobic respiration, nitrification, denitrification, sulphate reduction and methanogenesis. The model was calibrated and validated with data from two wetlands (each with a surface area of 55 m2) located in a pilot plant near Barcelona (Spain). According to the simulations, anaerobic processes (methanogenesis and sulphate reduction) are more widespread in the wetlands and contribute to a higher COD removal rate (60–70%) than anoxic (denitrification) and aerobic reactions do. These model results are confirmed by experimental observations. In all the cases tested, the reaction that most contributed to COD removal was methanogenesis (33–52%). According to our simulations, decreasing the HLR (for example, from 40 to 25 mm/d) while maintaining a constant COD influent concentration has a clear positive impact on COD removal efficiency (which increases from 65% to 89%). Changing influent COD concentration (for example, from 290 to 190 mg/L) while maintaining a constant HLR has a smaller impact, causing efficiency to increase from 79% to 84%. Changes in influent COD concentration (at a constant HLR) affect the relative contribution of the microbial reactions to organic matter removal. However, this trend is not seen when the HLR changes and the COD influent concentration remains constant.  相似文献

Investigation of the spatial distribution of metals was conducted for two constructed wetlands used as tertiary treatment in Chia Nan University of Pharmacy and Science (CNU) and Metal Processing Industries (MPI) located in Tainan, Taiwan. These two distinguished sites were selected to compare the distribution of metals for constructed wetlands treating different types of wastewater. Along the distance, samples of water, sediment, and macrophytes were analyzed for metals including Al, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn. Additionally, measurements of water quality including temperature, pH, EC, ORP, DO, TSS, BOD, COD, and turbidity were performed. Results show that, at CNU, wastewater contained higher organic consititute (BOD 29.3 +/- 11.7 mg/, COD 46.7 +/- 33.6 mg/L) with low metals content. Wastewater at MPI contained low level of organic consititute (BOD 7.1 +/- 3.3 mg/L, and COD 66.0 +/- 56.5 mg/L) and higher metals content. Metals distribution of both sites showed similar results where metals in the sediments in the inlet zone have greater concentrations than other areas. The constructed wetlands can remove Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn. However, there was no removal of Al, Cr, Fe, and Mn. A distance along the constructed wetlands had no effect on metal concentrations in macrophyte and water.  相似文献

Sediment organic matter is a key stressor for submerged macrophyte growth, which negatively impacts the ecological restoration of lakes. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) were screened from the rhizosphere of submerged macrophytes and used due to their promoting effect on Vallisneria natans under a high sediment organic matter load. Root exudates were used as the sole carbon source to obtain the root affinity strains. Eight isolates were selected from the 61 isolated strains, based on the P solubilization, IAA production, cytokinins production and ACC deaminase activity. The analysis of the 16S rDNA indicated that one strain was Staphylococcus sp., while the other seven bacterial strains were Bacillus sp. They were all listed in low-risk groups for safety use in agricultural practices. The plant height significantly increased after inoculation with PGPR strains, with the highest rate of increase reaching 96%. This study provides an innovative technique for recovering submerged macrophytes under sediment organic matter stress.  相似文献

A horizontal subsurface flow (HSSF) and a free water surface flow (FWSF) constructed wetlands (4 m2 of each) were set up on the campus of Harran University, Sanliurfa, Turkey. The main objective of the research was to compare the performance of two systems to decide the better one for future planning of wastewater treatment system on the campus. Both of the wetland systems were planted with Phragmites australis and Canna indica. During the observation period (10 months), environmental conditions such as pH, temperature and total chemical oxygen demand (COD), soluble COD, total biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), soluble BOD, total suspended solids (TSS), total phosphate (TP), total nitrogen (TN) removal efficiencies of the systems were determined. According to the results, average yearly removal efficiencies for the HSSF and the FWSF, respectively, were as follows: total COD (75.7% and 69.9%), soluble COD (85.4% and 84.3%), total BOD (79.6% and 87.6%), soluble BOD (87.7% and 95.3%), TN (33.2% and 39.4%), and TP (31.5% and 6.5%). Soluble COD and BOD removal efficiencies of both systems increased gradually since the start-up. After nine months of operation, above 90% removal of organic matters were observed. The treatment performances of the HSSF were better than that of the FWSF with regard to the removal of suspended solids and total COD at especially high temperatures. In FWSF systems, COD concentrations extremely exceeded the discharge limit values due to high concentrations of algae in spring months. The performance of the two systems was modelled using an artificial neural network-back-propagation algorithm. The ANN model was competent at providing reasonable match between the measured and the predicted concentrations of total COD (R = 0.90 for HSSF and R = 0.96 for FWSF), soluble COD (R = 0.90 for HSSF and R = 0.74 for FWSF) and total BOD (R = 0.94 for HSSF and R = 0.84 for FWSF) in the effluents of constructed wetlands.  相似文献

With the rapid development of scaled anaerobic digestion of pig manure, the generation of liquid anaerobic digestate exceeds the farmland loading capacity, causing serious environmental pollution. Three laboratory‐scale horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetlands (CWs; planted + aeration, planted, and unplanted) were set up to investigate the feasibility of liquid digestate treatment in wetlands. Treatment capacity in different wetlands was evaluated under different influent concentrations (chemical oxygen demand [COD], 5 days biochemical oxygen demand [BOD5], and nitrogen forms). The effect of aeration and effluent recirculation on organic matter and total nitrogen removal was investigated. Results showed that integrating intermittent aeration in CWs significantly improved the oxygen condition (p < 0.01) in the wetland bed and promoted BOD5 removal to 90% in aerated CWs as compared with <15% in the unaerated CWs. Meanwhile, COD removal between these three wetlands did not show any difference and varied from 52 to 72% under influent concentration of 200–820 mg/L because of the high content of hard‐degradable organic matter in the liquid digestate. Intermittent aeration resulted in high ammonium removal (>98%) although the influent loading varied from 65 to 350 mg/L. However, intermittent aeration caused nitrate accumulation of 300 mg/L and limited total nitrogen (TN) removal of 33%. To intensify the TN removal, we verified effluent recirculation to increase the removal efficiency of TN to 78%. These results not only show the potential application of CWs for treatment of high‐strength liquid anaerobic digested slurry, but also indicate the significance of intermittent aeration on the enhanced removal of organic matter and ammonium.  相似文献

Phenol is a commonly found organic pollutant in industrial wastewaters. Its ecotoxicological significance is well known and, therefore, the compound is often required to be removed prior to discharge. In this study, plant-bacterial synergism was established in floating treatment wetlands (FTWs) in an attempt to maximize the removal of phenol from contaminated water. A common wetland plant, Typha domingensis, was vegetated on a floating mat and augmented with three phenol-degrading bacterial strains, Acinetobacter lwofii ACRH76, Bacillus cereus LORH97, and Pseudomonas sp. LCRH90, to develop FTWs for the remediation of water contaminated with phenol. All of the strains are known to have phenol-reducing properties, and grow well in FTWs. Results showed that T. domingensis was able to remove a small amount of phenol from the contaminated water; however, bacterial augmentation enhanced the removal potential significantly, i.e., 0.146 g/m2/day vs. 0.166 g/m2/day, respectively. Plant biomass also increased in the presence of bacterial consortia; and inoculated bacteria displayed successful colonization/survival in the rhizosphere, root interior and shoot interior of the plant. Similarly, highest reduction in chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), and total organic carbon (TOC) was achieved by the combined application of plants and bacteria. The study demonstrates that the plant-bacterial synergism in a FTW may be a more effective approach for the remediation of phenol-contaminated water.  相似文献

The operation of tidal flow was studied using a pilot‐scale system treating high strength piggery wastewater. Located on a farm in Staffordshire, UK, the system consisted of five wetland treatment stages vegetated with common reeds of Phragmites australis. Wastewater samples were collected from the inlet and outlet of each stage and analyzed for BOD5, COD, NH4‐N, NO3‐N, NO2‐N, SS, PO4‐P and pH. Average hydraulic and organic loadings on the system were 0.12 m3/m2 d and 240 g BOD/m2 d, respectively, which is considerably higher than the typical loadings on conventional subsurface flow systems. On average, BOD5 and COD were reduced by 82 % and 80 % from initial concentrations of 2000 mg/L and 2750 mg/L, respectively, across the whole system. The first‐order kinetics constant for BOD5 removal (KBOD in m/d) in this tidal flow system is approximately 2.5 times the rate constant obtainable in a typical horizontal flow system, demonstrating a more efficient removal of organic matter in tidal flow wetlands. The overall efficiency of the system was found to increase with time before stabilizing towards the end of a start‐up period. Straight‐line correlations were established between the loading and removal of BOD5 and COD. Contributions by individual stages to the overall treatment were analyzed. SEM images of wetland media demonstrated the formation of biofilms and microbial activities inside the matrices of the wetland system, which accounted for the degradations of organic pollutants.  相似文献

Wetlands are subject to invasion by exotic plant species, especially during the dry season when they resemble terrestrial systems; therefore, terrestrial plants could exploit this situation to colonize this environment. We analyzed P. anserina invading Patagonian wetlands in terms of elemental ratios that would modify wetland stoichiometry due to organic matter inputs. We studied the elemental relationship (carbon/nitrogen/phosphorus) of P. anserina in comparison with native emergent macrophytes (Eleocharis pachicarpa and Carex aematorrhyncha). These plant species are common and dominant in the wetland. Additionally, we analyzed the presence of mycorrhizal fungi in the roots and their proportion of root infection. Our study reveals that the invasive species presented nutrient (especially phosphorus) allocation in roots and differences in mycorrhizal infection, with a predominance of arbuscular mycorrhiza, compared with native species. During flooded periods with the decay of aerial parts, P. anserina stores phosphorus in the roots and releases dissolved organic matter of high molecular weight molecules, high color, and a high C-to-nutrient ratio in comparison with native macrophytes. These results show the strategy of an invasive terrestrial plant in temporary aquatic systems, and how the elemental relationships of the invasive plant can modify the stoichiometry of the environment.  相似文献

Abstract

The genus Basella belongs to family Basellaceae and is comprised of five species. Out of these, Basella alba is pantropical in distribution, B. paniculata is endemic to south-eastern Africa and the other three species viz. B. excavata, B. leandriana and B. madagascariensis are endemic to Madagascar. The palynological study of an organic layer buried ~80 ka in Chaganacherry, Kerala revealed a rich diversity of rainforest pollen and estuarine/marine palynomorphs indicating warm and humid climate coupled with sea level high stand. The Basella pollen recorded from this sediment shows intermediate characters of two extant Basella species. While it resembles B. paniculata in being pantocolpate (20), it shows affinity with B. alba in sexine characters. The recovered pollen was therefore, ascertained to be a new species, named here as B. keralensis sp. nov. The age correlation of the studied sediment was carried out by fingerprinting (Rare Earth Elements) of Youngest Toba Tuff (YTT) (glass shards) which spread in the atmosphere through a volcanic eruption in Sumatra ~74 ka and also with marine palynomorph markers correlating the interglacial Marine Isotopic Stage 5a (~80 ka). It is inferred that earlier, the genus Basella comprised of six species out of which Basella keralensis sp. nov. became extinct and until now neither the fossil record nor the extant form of this is known in records from any part of the World.  相似文献

The effect of hydraulic loading rate (HLR) and hydraulic retention time (HRT) on the bioremediation of municipal wastewater using a pilot scale subsurface horizontal flow constructed treatment wetland (HFCTW) vegetated with Cyprus papyrus was investigated. Different HLRs were applied to the treatment system namely 0.18, 0.10, and 0.07 m3/m2. d with corresponding HRTs of 1.8, 3.2, and 4.7 days, respectively. The flow rate was 8 m3/d, and the average organic loading rate (OLR) was 0.037 kg BOD/m3/d. Results showed that the performance of the HFCTW was linearly affected by decreasing the HLR and increasing the HRT. The highest treatment efficiency was achieved at HRT (4.7 days) and HLR (0.07 m3/m2. d). The percentage reductions of chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), and total suspended solids (TSS) were 86%, 87%, and 80%, respectively. Satisfactory nutrient removal was obtained. Also, removal of 2–3 logs of bacterial indicators of pollution was achieved. The dry biomass of Cyperus was 7.7 kg/m2 and proved to be very efficient in nitrification processes due to high diversity of the roots that increase the treatment surface area.  相似文献

In developing countries, the use of non-conventional plant species as emergent plants in constructed wetlands may add economic benefits besides treating wastewater. In this work, the use of four commercial-valuable ornamental species (Zantedeschia aethiopica, Strelitzia reginae, Anturium andreanum and Agapanthus africanus) was investigated in two types of subsurface wetlands for domestic wastewater treatment. Several water quality parameters were evaluated at the inlet and outlets of a pilot-scale system. Physical measurements were used to evaluate and compare the development of the ornamental plants under two patterns of flow in subsurface wetlands. The results for pollutant removal were significantly higher in the vertical subsurface-flow constructed wetlands (VFCW) for most pollutants. The average removals were more than 80% for BOD and COD; 50.6% for Org-N; 72.2% for NH4+, 50% for Total-P and 96.9% for TC. Only two pollutants were removed in statistically higher percentages in the horizontal subsurface-flow constructed wetlands (HFCW) (NO3?, 47.7% and TSS, 82%). The pollutant removal efficiencies were similar to the results obtained in many studies with conventional macrophytes. Most ornamental plants survived the 12-month period of experimentation and their development depended on the type of constructed wetland they were planted. Z. aethiopica looked healthier and produced around 60 flowers in the HFCW. The other three species developed better in the VFCW, although A. andreanum died during the winter. S. reginae produced healthier flowers (and more) and bigger leaves and A. Agapanthus produced more leaves and more lasting flowers. This suggests that it is possible to produce commercial flowers in constructed wetlands without reducing the efficiency of the treatment system.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to investigate the ability of water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) to absorb organic compounds (potassium hydrogen phthalate, sodium tartrate, malathion, 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid (2,4-D), and piroxicam). For the aforementioned purpose, an artificial wetland system (AWS) was constructed and filled with water hyacinth collected from the Valsequillo Reservoir, Puebla, Mexico. Potassium hydrogen phthalate and sodium tartrate were measured in terms of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biological oxygen demand (BOD). The present study indicated that the water hyacinths absorbed nearly 1.8–16.6 g of COD kg?1 dm (dry mass of water hyacinth), while the absorbance efficiency of BOD was observed to be 45.8%. The results also indicated that the maximum absorbance efficiency of malathion, 2,4-D, and piroxicam was observed to be 67.6%, 58.3%, and 99.1%, respectively. The kinetics of organic compounds fitted different orders as malathion followed a zeroth-order reaction, while 2,4-D and piroxicam followed the first-order reactions. Preliminary assessment of absorption of heavy metals by the water hyacinth in the AWS was observed to be (all values in mg g?1) 7 (Ni), 13.4 (Cd), 16.3 (Pb), and 17.5 (Zn) of dry biomass, thus proving its feasibility to depurate wastewater.  相似文献

In this study, water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) was used to treat domestic wastewater. Ten organic and inorganic parameters were monitored in three weeks for water purification. The six chemical, biological and physical parameters included Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Ammoniacal Nitrogen (NH3-N), Total Suspended Solids (TSS), and pH were compared with the Interim National Water Quality Standards, Malaysia River classification (INWQS) and Water Quality Index (WQI). Between 38% to 96% of reduction was observed and water quality has been improved from class III and IV to class II. Analyses for Electricity Conductivity (EC), Salinity, Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) and Ammonium (NH4) were also investigated. In all parameters, removal efficiency was in range of 13–17th day (optimum 14th day) which was higher than 3 weeks except DO. It reveals the optimum growth rate of water hyacinth has great effect on waste water purification efficiency in continuous system and nutrient removal was successfully achieved.  相似文献

Summary The filamentous fungus Aspergillus oryzae was found to grow well on the effluents produced during the extraction of palm oil. Biomass yields of approximately 50 g 100 g–1 organic matter were obtained containing 40% crude protein, with BOD reductions of 85% and COD reductions of 75% to 80% in batch culture following optimisation of growth conditions. Supplementation with an inorganic nitrogen source was found to be necessary (but not supplementation with phosphate or sulphate sources). The more resistant substrate constituents to biodegradation were water soluble carbohydrate and nitrogenous material, possibly Maillard reaction products, and polyphenols.  相似文献

In order to investigate the effect of temperature, hydraulic residence time (HRT), vegetation type, substrate material and wetland shape on the performance of free-water surface (FWS) constructed wetlands treating wastewater, 5 pilot-scale units were constructed and operated continuously from December 2004 until March 2007 in parallel experiments. Four of the units (A, B, C, D) were rectangular in plan view with dimensions 3.40 m in length and 0.85 m in width, and contained substrate material at a thickness of 0.45 m. The fifth unit (E) had a trapezoidal plan view shape, with a width at the inlet of 1.15 m and at the outlet of 0.55 m, while the length and the thickness of the substrate were the same as in the other four. All units operated at a water depth of 0.10 m. Units B–E contained clay substrate and unit A contained sand. The four units with clay were planted as follows: two with cattails (B and E), one with common reeds (C), and one with giant reeds (D). Unit A, containing sand, was planted with cattails. Planting and substrate material combinations were appropriate for comparison of the effect of vegetation and material type on the function of the system. Synthetic wastewater was introduced in the units. During the operation period four HRTs (i.e., 6 days, 8 days, 14 days and 20 days) were used, while wastewater temperatures varied from about 0.0 °C to 29.1 °C. The removal performance of the five constructed wetland units was good, since it reached on the average 77.5%, 67.9%, 60.4%, 53.9%, 56.0% and 51.7% for BOD, COD, TKN, ammonia (NH4-N), ortho-phosphate (PO4-P) and total phosphorus (TP), respectively. BOD and phosphorus removal efficiencies showed dependence on temperature in most units. The 14-day HRT was found adequate for acceptable removal of organic matter, nitrogen and phosphorus for most temperatures. A 20-day HRT is recommended for acceptable removal of BOD and PO4-P in the cold season. The unit with the trapezoidal plan view shape showed the best performance, with mean removals of 80.1%, 73.5%, 70.4%, 68.6%, 64.7% and 63.5% for BOD, COD, TKN, NH4-N, PO4-P and TP, respectively. The cattail was found statistically more efficient than the other two plants in COD and PO4-P removal. The unit that contained the clay substrate was found statistically more efficient in phosphorus removal than the unit containing sand. HSF CW units were found more efficient than FWS units in removal of most pollutant.  相似文献
