The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of the core to skin temperature gradient during incremental running to volitional fatigue across varying environmental conditions. A secondary aim was to determine if a “critical” core temperature would dictate volitional fatigue during running in the heat. 60 participants (n=49 male, n=11 female; 24±5 yrs, 177±11 cm, 75±13 kg) completed the study. Participants were uniformly stratified into a specific exercise temperature group (18 °C, 26 °C, 34 °C, or 42 °C) based on a 3-mile run performance. Participants were equipped with core and chest skin temperature sensors and a heart rate monitor, entered an environmental chamber (18 °C, 26 °C, 34 °C, or 42 °C), and rested in the seated position for 10 min before performing a walk/run to volitional exhaustion. Initial treadmill speed was 3.2 km h−1 with a 0% grade. Every 3 min, starting with speed, speed and grade increased in an alternating pattern (speed increased by 0.805 km h−1, grade increased by 0.5%). Time to volitional fatigue was longer for the 18 °C and 26 °C group compared to the 42 °C group, (58.1±9.3 and 62.6±6.5 min vs. 51.3±8.3 min, respectively, p<0.05). At the half-way point and finish, the core to skin gradient for the 18 °C and 26 °C groups was larger compared to 42 °C group (halfway: 2.6±0.7 and 2.0±0.6 vs. 1.3±0.5 for the 18 °C, 26 °C and 42 °C groups, respectively; finish: 3.3±0.7 and 3.5±1.1 vs. 2.1±0.9 for the 26 °C, 34 °C, and 42 °C groups, respectively, p<0.05). Sweat rate was lower in the 18 °C group compared to the 26 °C, 34 °C, and 42 °C groups, 3.6±1.3 vs. 7.2±3.0, 7.1±2.0, and 7.6±1.7 g m−2 min−1, respectively, p<0.05. There were no group differences in core temperature and heart rate response during the exercise trials. The current data demonstrate a 13% and 22% longer run time to exhaustion for the 18 °C and 26 °C group, respectively, compared to the 42 °C group despite no differences in beginning and ending core temperatures or baseline 3-mile run time. This capacity difference appears to result from a magnified core to skin gradient via an environmental temperature advantageous to convective heat loss, and in part from an increased sweat rate.  相似文献

Fire Service Instructors frequently experience high levels of physiological and perceptual strain during live fire exposures. Instructors are also at risk of cardiovascular illnesses, with cardiac death being the greatest cause of fire fighter death. Current practice for UK instructors is to select undergarment type based on personal preference, between a boiler suit (BOILER) and a wicking base layer (WBL). Research suggests that shorts and t-shirt (SHORTS) may also be a beneficial alternative undergarment choice. The UK South East Fire Service requested an investigation to identify if undergarment selection can lessen the strain experienced by instructors, and reduce the acute inflammatory response to fire exposures. Eight males completed three 45 min sessions in a heat chamber (49.5±1.4 °C and 16.9±4.3% RH) whilst performing intermittent walking. At the end of heat exposure change in heart rate was not effected by garment type (p=0.061, ηp2=0.373). Change in rectal temperature was different between garments (p=0.009, ηp2=0.271), with trends suggesting that BOILER resulted in a greater change (1.03±0.60 °C) than SHORTS (0.76±0.37 °C, p=0.589, d=0.21) and WBL (0.72±0.33 °C, p=0.545, d=0.25). Interleukin-6 post exposure was greater for BOILER (6.96±0.28 pg mL−1) than both SHORTS (6.59±0.30 pg mL−1, p=0.043, d=0.42) and WBL (6.45±0.43 pg mL−1, p=0.031, d=0.51). Overall, undergarment type had little impact on physiological or perceptual strain. However, wearing WBL or SHORTS may reduce the inflammatory response, and consequently decrease the risk of cardiovascular events.  相似文献

The longevity and fecundity of Cnaphalocrocis medinalis were investigated at temperatures of 15.0, 17.5, 20.0, 22.5, 25.0, 27.5, 30.0, 32.5, and 35.0 °C. Adult longevity and fecundity were significantly influenced by temperature. Longevity decreased with increasing temperature: it was highest at 15.0 °C (23.6 ± 3.51 days) and lowest at 35.0 °C (6.4 ± 0.48 days). Fecundity was highest at 25.0 °C (170.5 ± 45.54 eggs) and lowest at 17.5 °C (11.0 ± 3.68 eggs). The oviposition period was longest at 20.0 °C (8.0 ± 1.09 days) and shortest at 35.0 °C (2.3 ± 0.48 days). The oviposition model presented in this study consisted of two reproductive components (total fecundity and age-specific cumulative oviposition rate) and a survival component (age-specific survival rate). The relationship between adult developmental rate and temperature was described by the Lactin 2 model (r2 = 0.98, p < 0.0001). The age-specific survival rate was well explained by a sigmoid function (r2 = 0.97, p < 0.00001). The age-specific cumulative oviposition rate was best described by the three-parameter Weibull function (r2 = 0.99, p < 0.00001). Temperature-dependent fecundity was estimated using the Briere-2 model (r2 = 0.94, p < 0.007). Daily egg production of C. medinalis in relation to adult age and temperature was estimated.  相似文献

Athletes with rotator cuff (RC) tendinopathy demonstrate an aberrant pattern of scapular motion which might relate to deficits in the scapular muscles. This study aimed to determine whether alteration in scapular kinematics is associated with deficits in the activity onset of scapular muscles. Forty-three male volleyball players (17 asymptomatic and 26 with RC tendinopathy) joined the study. Three-dimensional scapular kinematics was quantified using an acromial marker cluster method. The activity onset of the upper (UT), middle (MT), and lower trapezius (LT), and serratus anterior (SA) during arm abduction was assessed with electromyography. Athletes with RC tendinopathy demonstrated less scapular upward rotation (6.6 ± 2.3 vs. 8.2 ± 1.1°, p = 0.021) in the early phase of shoulder abduction from 0° to 30° when compared to asymptomatic athletes. The tendinopathy group had delayed activity onset of LT (14.1 ± 31.4 ms vs. 74.4 ± 45.1 ms, p < 0.001) and SA (−44.9 ± 26.0 ms vs. 23.0 ± 25.2 ms, p < 0.001) relative to UT when compared to the asymptomatic group. In asymptomatic athletes, earlier activity onset of MT and LT relative to UT was associated with more scapular upward rotation during 0–30° of abduction (r = 0.665, p = 0.021) and 30–60° of abduction (r = 0.680, p = 0.015), respectively. Our findings showed the control of the scapular upward rotation is related to the activity onset of the scapular muscles in athletes.  相似文献

(1) This study describes the performance and the acute physiological responses of heat acclimatised cyclists during three sets of 5×20 s sprints followed by a final sprint to exhaustion in temperate (mean±standard deviation 20.2±0.4°C; 46±2% humidity, 108.5±1.4 kPa water vapour pressure) and in warm conditions (30.5±0.4°C; 47±10% humidity, 206.8±6.4 kPa water vapour pressure). (2) Oxygen consumption was greater in the warm condition and there was no evidence of an increased reliance on anaerobic metabolism as has been reported for submaximal exercise in the heat. (3) Subjects lost 2.1±0.2% of body mass in 53.8±0.2 min during the warm condition. While the duration of the time to exhaustion final sprint was 50±13 s during the warm condition it was 60±7 s for the temperate condition (p=0.020).  相似文献

To test the hypothesis that impaired mitochondrial respiration limits cardiac performance at warm temperatures, and examine if any effect(s) are sex-related, the consequences of high temperature on cardiac mitochondrial oxidative function were examined in 10 °C acclimated, sexually immature, male and female Atlantic cod. Active (State 3) and uncoupled (States 2 and 4) respiration were measured in isolated ventricular mitochondria at 10, 16, 20, and 24 °C using saturating concentrations of malate and pyruvate, but at a submaximal (physiological) level of ADP (200 µM). In addition, citrate synthase (CS) activity was measured at these temperatures, and mitochondrial respiration and the efficiency of oxidative phosphorylation (P:O ratio) were determined at [ADP] ranging from 25–200 µM at 10 and 20 °C. Cardiac morphometrics and mitochondrial respiration at 10 °C, and the thermal sensitivity of CS activity (Q10=1.51), were all similar between the sexes. State 3 respiration at 200 µM ADP increased gradually in mitochondria from females between 10 and 24 °C (Q10=1.48), but plateaued in males above 16 °C, and this resulted in lower values in males vs. females at 20 and 24 °C. At 10 °C, State 4 was ~10% of State 3 values in both sexes [i.e. a respiratory control ratio (RCR) of ~10] and P:O ratios were approximately 1.5. Between 20 and 24 °C, State 4 increased more than State 3 (by ~70 vs. 14%, respectively), and this decreased RCR to ~7.5. The P:O ratio was not affected by temperature at 200 μM ADP. However, (1) the sensitivity of State 3 respiration to increasing [ADP] (from 25 to 200 μM) was reduced at 20 vs. 10 °C in both sexes (Km values 105±7 vs. 68±10 μM, respectively); and (2) mitochondria from females had lower P:O values at 25 vs. 100 μM ADP at 20 °C, whereas males showed a similar effect at 10 °C but a much more pronounced effect at 20 °C (P:O 1.05 at 25 μM ADP vs. 1.78 at 100 μM ADP). In summary, our results demonstrate several sex-related differences in ventricular mitochondrial function in Atlantic cod, and suggest that myocardial oxidative function and possibly phosphorylation efficiency may be limited at temperatures of 20 °C or above, particularly in males. These observations could partially explain why cardiac function in Atlantic cod plateaus just below this species׳ critical thermal maximum (~22 °C) and may contribute to yet unidentified sex differences in thermal tolerance and swimming performance.  相似文献

In this study, we evaluated the effects of the thawing methodology on sperm function after cryopreservation in pellets. We compared the use of two thawing procedures: method (1) maintaining pellet for 10 min in air at room temperature, then another 10-min period in air at 37 °C followed by dilution in a thawing medium; and method (2) immersing the pellets directly in thawing medium at 37 °C for 20 min. This procedure leads to a higher rate of temperature increase and a dilution of the glycerol present in the freezing medium. We analyzed the effect of the thawing procedure on sperm motility, viability, membrane lipid packing disorder, acrosome status, reactive oxygen species (ROS) level and sperm chromatin condensation. This study revealed a positive effect of the M2 thawing methodology on sperm parameters. The percentage of spermatozoa with fast-linear movement is increased (M1: 17.26% vs. M2: 28.05%, p < 0.01), with higher viability (M1: 37.81% vs. M2: 40.15%, p < 0.01) and less acrosome damage (M1: 40.44% vs. M2: 35.45%, p = 0.02). We also detected an increase in the percentage of viable spermatozoa with low membrane lipid disorder (M1: 31.36% vs. M2: 33.17%, p = 0.03) and a reduction in chromatin condensation (44.62 vs. 46.62 arbitrary units, p = 0.02). Further studies will be necessary to evaluate the possible clinical applications.  相似文献

Thermoregulatory behavior in temperate bats is influenced by gender, food availability, ambient temperature and reproduction. Ecologically and morphologically similar bat species (Myotis bechsteinii, M. nattereri, and Plecotus auritus; Vespertilionidae) facing similar diurnal conditions should therefore not differ in their thermoregulatory behavior. Identified day roosts (n = 23) of radio-tagged bats (n = 30) were spread over an area of 33.1 ha, but ambient temperature did not differ between roosting sites. Furthermore, there was no significant difference in cardinal direction, roost height, canopy coverage, and breast height diameter between day roosts used by the three species. Minimum roost temperatures and isolation values, however, differed significantly between our species with lowest values in P. auritus. The range of skin temperatures (min–max) recorded by temperature-sensitive transmitters was not species-specific with the lowest ranges in late pregnancy (mean ± SD: 7.1 ± 1.1 °C) and highest in post-lactation (mean ± SD: 13.1 ± 1.1 °C). The minimum skin temperature, however, was species-specific with the lowest values in P. auritus (mean ± SD: 20.2 ± 1.1 °C), intermediate in M. nattereri (mean ± SD: 23.4 ± 1.0 °C), and the highest in M. bechsteinii (mean ± SD: 26.8 ± 1.0 °C). Species-specific usage of energy-saving mechanisms might represent an important niche differentiation of species. Different mechanisms might allow, e.g. one species to occupy colder roosts with higher temperature variations or to shorten foraging times due to distinct thermoregulatory behavior.  相似文献

Anti-pronation orthoses, like medially posted insoles (MPI), have traditionally been used to treat various of lower limb problems. Yet, we know surprisingly little about their effects on overall foot motion and lower limb mechanics across walking and running, which represent highly different loading conditions. To address this issue, multi-segment foot and lower limb mechanics was examined among 11 overpronating men with normal (NORM) and MPI insoles during walking (self-selected speed 1.70 ± 0.19 m/s vs 1.72 ± 0.20 m/s, respectively) and running (4.04 ± 0.17 m/s vs 4.10 ± 0.13 m/s, respectively). The kinematic results showed that MPI reduced the peak forefoot eversion movement in respect to both hindfoot and tibia across walking and running when compared to NORM (p < 0.05–0.01). No differences were found in hindfoot eversion between conditions. The kinetic results showed no insole effects in walking, but during running MPI shifted center of pressure medially under the foot (p < 0.01) leading to an increase in frontal plane moments at the hip (p < 0.05) and knee (p < 0.05) joints and a reduction at the ankle joint (p < 0.05). These findings indicate that MPI primarily controlled the forefoot motion across walking and running. While kinetic response to MPI was more pronounced in running than walking, kinematic effects were essentially similar across both modes. This suggests that despite higher loads placed upon lower limb during running, there is no need to have a stiffer insoles to achieve similar reduction in the forefoot motion than in walking.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine if athletes with a history of hamstring strain injury display lower levels of surface EMG (sEMG) activity and median power frequency in the previously injured hamstring muscle during maximal voluntary contractions. Recreational athletes were recruited, 13 with a history of unilateral hamstring strain injury and 15 without prior injury. All athletes undertook isokinetic dynamometry testing of the knee flexors and sEMG assessment of the biceps femoris long head (BF) and medial hamstrings (MHs) during concentric and eccentric contractions at ±180 and ±60° s?1. The knee flexors on the previously injured limb were weaker at all contraction speeds compared to the uninjured limb (+180° s?1 p = 0.0036; +60° s?1 p = 0.0013; ?60° s?1 p = 0.0007; ?180° s?1 p = 0.0007) whilst sEMG activity was only lower in the BF during eccentric contractions (?60° s?1 p = 0.0025; ?180° s?1 p = 0.0003). There were no between limb differences in MH sEMG activity or median power frequency from either BF or MH in the injured group. The uninjured group showed no between limb differences in any of the tested variables. Secondary analysis comparing the between limb difference in the injured and the uninjured groups, confirmed that previously injured hamstrings were mostly weaker (+180° s?1 p = 0.2208; +60° s?1 p = 0.0379; ?60° ?1 p = 0.0312; ?180° s?1 p = 0.0110) and that deficits in sEMG were confined to the BF during eccentric contractions (?60° s?1 p = 0.0542; ?180° s?1 p = 0.0473). Previously injured hamstrings were weaker and BF sEMG activity was lower than the contralateral uninjured hamstring. This has implications for hamstring strain injury prevention and rehabilitation which should consider altered neural function following hamstring strain injury.  相似文献

A 30 day feeding trial was conducted using a freshwater fish, Labeo rohita (rohu), to determine their thermal tolerance, oxygen consumption and optimum temperature for growth. Four hundred and sixteen L. rohita fry (10 days old, 0.385±0.003 g) were equally distributed between four treatments (26, 31, 33 and 36 °C) each with four replicates for 30 days. Highest body weight gain and lowest feed conversion ratio (FCR) was recorded between 31 and 33 °C. The highest specific growth rate was recorded at 31 °C followed by 33 and 26 °C and the lowest was at 36 °C. Thermal tolerance and oxygen consumption studies were carried out after completion of growth study to determine tolerance level and metabolic activity at four different acclimation temperatures. Oxygen consumption rate increased significantly with increasing acclimation temperature. Preferred temperature decided from relationship between acclimation temperature and Q10 values were between 33 and 36 °C, which gives a better understanding of optimum temperature for growth of L. rohita. Critical thermal maxima (CTMax) and critical thermal minima (CTMin) were 42.33±0.07, 44.81±0.07, 45.35±0.06, 45.60±0.03 and 12.00±0.08, 12.46±0.04, 13.80±0.10, 14.43±0.06, respectively, and increased significantly with increasing acclimation temperatures (26, 31, 33 and 36 °C). Survival (%) was similar in all groups indicating that temperature range of 26–36 °C is not fatal to L. rohita fry. The optimum temperature range for growth was 31–33 °C and for Q10 values was 33–36 °C.  相似文献

The value of electromyography (EMG) is sensitive to many physiological and non-physiological factors. The purpose of the present study was to determine if the torque–velocity test (T–V) can be used to normalize EMG signals into a framework of biological significance. Peak EMG amplitude of gluteus maximus (GMAX), vastus lateralis (VL), rectus femoris (RF), biceps femoris long head (BF), gastrocnemius medialis (GAS) and soleus (SOL) was calculated for nine subjects during isometric maximal voluntary contractions (IMVC) and torque–velocity bicycling tests (T–V). Then, the reference EMG signals obtained from IMVC and T–V bicycling tests were used to normalize the amplitude of the EMG signals collected for 15 different submaximal pedaling conditions. The results of this study showed that the repeatability of the measurements between IMVC (from 10% to 23%) and T–V (from 8% to 20%) was comparable. The amplitude of the peak EMG of VL was 99 ± 43% higher (p < 0.001) when measured during T–V. Moreover, the inter-individual variability of the EMG patterns calculated for submaximal cycling exercises differed significantly when using T–V bicycling normalization method (GMAX: 0.33 ± 0.16 vs. 1.09 ± 0.04, VL: 0.07 ± 0.02 vs. 0.64 ± 0.14, SOL: 0.07 ± 0.03 vs. 1.00 ± 0.07, RF: 1.21 ± 0.20 vs. 0.92 ± 0.13, BF: 1.47 ± 0.47 vs. 0.84 ± 0.11). It was concluded that T–V bicycling test offers the advantage to be less time and energy-consuming and to be as repeatable as IMVC tests to measure peak EMG amplitude. Furthermore, this normalization method avoids the impact of non-physiological factors on the amplitude of the EMG signals so that it allows quantifying better the activation level of lower limb muscles and the variability of the EMG patterns during submaximal bicycling exercises.  相似文献

To test whether the effects of feeding on swimming performance vary with acclimation temperature in juvenile southern catfish (Silurus meridionalis), we investigated the specific dynamic action (SDA) and swimming performance of fasting and feeding fish at acclimation temperatures of 15, 21, 27, and 33 °C. Feeding had no effect on the critical swimming speeding (Ucrit) of fish acclimated at 15 °C (p = 0.66), whereas it elicited a 12.04, 18.70, and 20.98% decrease in Ucrit for fish acclimated at 21, 27 and 33 °C, respectively (p < 0.05). Both the maximal postprandial oxygen consumption rate (VO2peak) and the active metabolic rate (VO2active, maximal aerobic sustainable metabolic rate of fasting fish) increased significantly with temperature (p < 0.05). The postprandial maximum oxygen consumption rates during swimming (VO2max) were higher than the VO2active of fasting fish at all temperature groups (p < 0.05). The VO2max increased with increasing temperature, but the relative residual metabolic scope (VO2max? VO2peak) during swimming decreased with increasing in temperature. The present study showed that the impairment of postprandial swimming performance increased with increasing temperature due to the unparalleled changes in the catfish's central cardio-respiratory, peripheral digestive and locomotory capacities. The different metabolic strategies of juvenile southern catfish at different temperatures may relate to changes in oxygen demand, imbalances in ion fluxes and dissolved oxygen levels with changes in temperature.  相似文献

Diabetes mellitus is associated with an increase in sialic acid concentration along with other complications. Sialic acid changes in NIDDM patients were investigated following bitter melon (55 ml/24 h) and rosiglitazone (4 mg/24 h) treatment. A total of 25 patients of both sexes were used in each experimental group. Patients following bitter melon treatment showed no significant difference of serum sialic acid (57.95±4.90 vs. 57.6±5.56 mg/dl, p=0.17) and serum glucose concentration (93.7±9.63 vs. 88.35±6.31 mg/dl, p=0.78) as compared to control subjects. However, the concentration of total cholesterol was significantly high in these patients as compared to control subjects (192±14.23 vs. 170.6±15.1 mg/dl, p<0.03) but within normal range (160–200 mg/dl), suggesting the significant hypoglycemic and lipid-lowering properties of bitter melon. The patients following rosiglitazone treatment showed a significant increase of serum sialic acid concentration (60.2±5.80 vs. 57.6±5.56 mg/dl, p=0.01) along with glucose (112±6.2 vs. 88.35±6.31 mg/dl, p<0.04) and total cholesterol concentration (216.45±20.2 vs. 170.6±15.1 mg/dl, p<0.01) as compared to control subjects. In addition six of the patients had retinopathy, two of whom were suffering also from myocardial infarction and they still had a higher serum sialic acid (61.05±1.20 mg/dl), glucose (187±2.11 mg/dl), total cholesterol (239.10±5.04 mg/dl) and triglyceride (183±4.14 mg/dl) concentration, indicating a poor response of these patients to rosiglitazone. Comparison of serum sialic acid concentration of patients, following bitter melon and rosiglitazone treatment revealed no significant difference but the study showed that bitter melon could be more effective in the management of diabetes and its related complications as compared to rosiglitazone.  相似文献

The acute effects of short-term glutamate administration on the number of antral follicles and ovulation rate were examined in adult goats. Neither live weight (44.5 ± 1.3 kg) nor body condition (3.3 ± 0.8 units) differed between the control (untreated) and glutamate-treated (0.175 mg/kg) animals (p > 0.05). However, the number of antral follicles (3.4 vs. 2.1, p = 0.05) and ovulation rate (2.5 vs. 1.5, p = 0.05) was higher in the glutamate-administered group than in the controls.  相似文献

The effect of temperature (26 °C, 28 °C, 30 °C and 35 °C) on the growth of native CAAT-3-2005 Microcystis aeruginosa and the production of Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and Microcystin-LR (MC-LR) were examined through laboratory studies. Kinetic parameters such as specific growth rate (μ), lag phase duration (LPD) and maximum population density (MPD) were determined by fitting the modified Gompertz equation to the M. aeruginosa strain cell count (cells mL−1). A 4.8-fold increase in μ values and a 10.8-fold decrease in the LPD values were found for M. aeruginosa growth when the temperature changed from 15 °C to 35 °C. The activation energy of the specific growth rate (Eμ) and of the adaptation rate (E1/LPD) were significantly correlated (R2 = 0.86). The cardinal temperatures estimated by the modified Ratkowsky model were minimum temperature = 8.58 ± 2.34 °C, maximum temperature = 45.04 ± 1.35 °C and optimum temperature = 33.39 ± 0.55 °C.Maximum MC-LR production decreased 9.5-fold when the temperature was increased from 26 °C to 35 °C. The maximum production values were obtained at 26° C and the maximum depletion rate of intracellular MC-LR was observed at 30–35 °C. The MC-LR cell quota was higher at 26 and 28 °C (83 and 80 fg cell−1, respectively) and the MC-LR Chl-a quota was similar at all the different temperatures (0.5–1.5 fg ng−1).The Gompertz equation and dynamic model were found to be the most appropriate approaches to calculate M. aeruginosa growth and production of MC-LR, respectively. Given that toxin production decreased with increasing temperatures but growth increased, this study demonstrates that growth and toxin production processes are uncoupled in M. aeruginosa. These data and models may be useful to predict M. aeruginosa bloom formation in the environment.  相似文献

The effects of heating rate (HR) on the performance of two-phase (batch followed by fed-batch) high cell-density cultivations (HCDC) of E. coli DH5α for the production of plasmid DNA (pDNA) were investigated. Optimal temperatures for the HCDC, as selected from shake flask experiments at constant temperatures between 30 and 45 °C, were 35 °C for biomass accumulation in the batch phase and 42 °C for inducing pDNA replication during the fed-batch. In HCDC the temperature was increased at HR of 0.025, 0.05, 0.10 and 0.25 °C/min and the performance of the cultivations were compared to a HCDC run at constant temperature (35 °C). Compared to constant 35 °C, heat-induced HCDC accumulated up to 50% less biomass within the same cultivation time and acetate and glucose accumulated to high concentrations. The overall specific productivity (QP) and average pDNA yield (Yp/x) in HCDC at 35 °C were 0.22 ± 0.02 mg/g h and 5.3 ± 0.00 mg/g, respectively. Such parameters were maximum at a HR of 0.05 °C/min, reaching 0.56 ± 0.06 mg/g h and 9.3 ± 0.6 mg/g, respectively. At HR above 0.5 °C/min, Yp/x remained relatively constant, whereas QP tended to decrease. The supercoiled pDNA fraction remained around 80% at all HR. Bioreactors were equipped with a capacitance/conductivity probe. In all cases biomass concentration correlated closely with the capacitance signal and acetate and glucose accumulation was accompanied by an increase in the conductivity signal. Thus, it was possible to calculate acetate and biomass concentrations, as well as μ, from online capacitance and conductivity signals using estimators. Altogether, in this study it was shown that it is possible to maximize pDNA productivity by choosing an appropriate HR and that relevant parameters can be estimated by capacitance/conductivity signals, which are useful for better process control and development.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of exercise in the heat on thermoregulatory responses and plasma vasoactive intestinal peptide concentration (VIP) and whether it is modulated by ice-slushy consumption. Ten male participants cycled at 62% V̇O2max for 90 min in 32 °C and 40% relative humidity. A thermoneutral (37 °C) or ice-slushy (−1 °C) sports drink was given at 3.5 ml kg−1 body mass every 15 min during exercise. VIP and rectal temperature increased during exercise (mean±standard deviation: 4.6±4.4 pmol L−1, P=0.005; and 1.3±0.4 °C, P<0.001 respectively) and were moderately associated (r=0.35, P=0.008). While rectal temperature and VIP were not different between trials, ice-slushy significantly reduced heat storage (P=0.010) and skin temperature (time×trial interaction P=0.038). It appears that VIP does not provide the signal linking cold beverage ingestion and lower skin temperature in the heat.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of whole body cryotherapy (WBC) on a range of thermoregulatory measures. We also sought to examine the influence of sex and body composition. A convenience sample of 18 healthy participants (10 males and 8 females) (27±6 yr) volunteered for this study. Temperature (core, tympanic, skin and mean body), heart rate, blood pressure, and thermal comfort and sensation were recorded pre- and post- (immediately and every 5 min until 35 min post) exposure to a single bout of WBC (30 s at −60 °C, 150 s at 110 °C). Anthropometric data (height, weight, body surface area, body mass index, fat mass and fat free mass) were also recorded. No significant differences in temperature (core, tympanic, skin and mean body), heart rate, blood pressure, or thermal comfort / sensation were observed between male and females at baseline. Immediately post WBC mean body (male:31.9±0.8 °C; female:31.0±0.9 °C; ∆ mean body temperature:0.9±0.1 °C; P≤0.05, d=0.64) and mean skin (male:22.1±2.2 °C; female:19.6±2.8 °C; ∆ mean skin temperature:−2.5±0.6 °C; d=0.99, P≤0.05) temperature was significantly different between sexes. Sex differences were also observed in regional skin temperature (male thigh, 20.8±1.1 °C; female thigh, 16.7±1.1 °C, ∆ mean thigh skin temperature:−4.1 °C; d=3.72; male calf, 20.5±1.1 °C; female calf, 18.2±1 °C, ∆ mean calf skin temperature:−2.3±0.1 °C; d=3.61; male arm, 21.7±1 °C; female arm, 19±0.4 °C, ∆ mean arm skin temperature: −2.7±0.3 °C; d=3.54; P≤0.05). Mean arterial pressure was significantly different over time (P≤0.001) and between sexes (male 0 mins:94±10 mmHg; female 0 mins:85±7 mmHg; male 35 mins:88±7 mmHg; female 35 mins:80±6 mmHg; P≤0.05). Combined data set indicated a strong negative relationship between skin temperature and body fat percentage 35 min’ post WBC (r=−0.749, P≤0.001) and for core temperature and body mass index in males only (r=0.726, P≤0.05) immediately after WBC. There were no significant differences between sexes in any other variables (heart rate, tympanic and perceptual variables). We observed sex differences in mean skin and mean body temperature following exposure to whole body cryotherapy. In an attempt to optimise treatment, these differences should be taken into account if whole body cryotherapy is prescribed.  相似文献
