Materials, including bone, often fail due to loading in the presence of critical flaws. The relative amount, location, and interaction of these flaws within a stressed volume of material play a role in determining the failure properties of the structure. As materials are generally imperfect, larger volumes of material have higher probabilities of containing a flaw of critical size than do smaller volumes. Thus, larger volumes tend to fail at fewer cycles compared with smaller volumes when fatigue loaded to similar stress levels. A material is said to exhibit a volume effect if its failure properties are dependent on the specimen volume. Volume effects are well documented in brittle ceramics and composites and have been proposed for bone. We hypothesized that (1) smaller volumes of cortical bone have longer fatigue lives than similarly loaded larger volumes and (2) that compared with microstructural features, specimen volume was able to explain comparable amounts of variability in fatigue life. In this investigation, waisted rectangular specimens (n=18) with nominal cross-sections of 3×4 mm and gage lengths of 10.5, 21, or 42 mm, were isolated from the mid-diaphysis of the dorsal region of equine third metacarpal bones. These specimens were subjected to uniaxial load controlled fatigue tests, with an initial strain range of 4000 microstrain. The group having the smallest volume exhibited a trend of greater log fatigue life than the larger volume groups. Each volume group exhibited a significant positive correlation between the logarithm of fatigue life and the cumulative failure probability, indicating that the data follow the two-parameter Weibull distribution. Additionally, log fatigue life was negatively correlated with log volume, supporting the hypothesis that smaller stressed volumes of cortical bone possess longer fatigue lives than similarly tested larger stressed volumes. 相似文献

Determining accurate density-mechanical property relationships for trabecular bone is critical for correct characterization of this important structure-function relation. When testing any excised specimen of trabecular bone, an unavoidable experimental artifact originates from the sides of the specimen where peripheral trabeculae lose their vertical load-bearing capacity due to interruption of connectivity, a phenomenon denoted here as the 'side-artifact'. We sought in this study to quantify the magnitude of such side-artifact errors in modulus measurement and to do so as a function of the trabecular architecture and specimen size. Using parametric computational analysis of high-resolution micro-CT-based finite-element models of cores of elderly human vertebral trabecular bone, a specimen-specific correction factor for the side-artifact was quantified as the ratio of the side-artifact-free apparent modulus (Etrue) to the apparent modulus that would be measured in a typical experiment (Emeasured). We found that the width over which the peripheral trabeculae were mostly unloaded was between 0.19 and 0.58 mm. The side-artifact led to an underestimation error in Etrue of over 50% in some specimens, having a mean (+/-SD) of 27+/-11%. There was a trend for the correction factor to linearly increase as volume fraction decreased (p=0.001) and as mean trabecular separation increased (p<0.001). Further analysis indicated that the error increased substantially as specimen size decreased. Two methods used for correcting for the side-artifact were both successful in bringing Emeasured into statistical agreement with Etrue. These findings have important implications for the interpretation of almost all literature data on trabecular bone mechanical properties since they indicate that such properties need to be adjusted to eliminate the substantial effects of side-artifacts in order to provide more accurate estimates of in situ behavior. 相似文献

Advances in diagnosis and treatment of some bone disorders can be made by understanding the linkage between mineral content and mechanical function. Bone is approximately half by volume a hydrated protein network, and the remainder is a biomineral analogue of hydroxyapatite. In the current work, paired measurements of mechanical properties, using nanoindentation, and of bone mineral volume fraction, computed from quantitative back-scattered electron imaging, were made on six different types of normal and outlier bone samples. Local elastic modulus was plotted against mineral fraction and compared with predictions of engineering bounds for a two-phase composite material. Experimental data spanning the composite bounds showed no one-to-one relationship between mechanical stiffness and bone composition, excluding the possibility of any single, simple composites model for bone at nanometer length-scales. 相似文献

We aimed to investigate the elastic modulus of trabeculae using tensile tests and assess the effects of nanostructure at the hydroxyapatite (HAp) crystal scale on the elastic modulus. In the experiments, 18 trabeculae that were at least 3 mm in length in the proximal epiphysis of three adult bovine femurs were used. Tensile tests were conducted using a small tensile testing device coupled with microscopy under air-dried condition. The c-axis orientation of HAp crystals and the degree of orientation were measured by X-ray diffraction. To observe the deformation behavior of HAp crystals under tensile loading, the same tensile tests were conducted in X-ray diffraction measurements. The mineral content of specimens was evaluated using energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry. The elastic modulus of a single trabecula varied from 4.5 to 23.6 GPa, and the average was 11.5±5.0 GPa. The c-axis of HAp crystals was aligned with the trabecular axis and the crystals were lineally deformed under tensile loading. The ratio of the HAp crystal strain to the tissue strain (strain ratio) had a significant correlation with the elastic modulus (r=0.79; P<0.001). However, the mineral content and the degree of orientation did not vary widely and did not correlate with the elastic modulus in this study. It suggests that the strain ratio may represent the nanostructure of a single trabecula and would determine the elastic modulus as well as mineral content and orientation. 相似文献

A flexural model of four-point bending fatigue that has been experimentally validated for human cortical bone under load control was used to determine how load and displacement control testing affects the fatigue behavior of human cortical bone in three-point and symmetric four-point bending. Under load control, it was predicted that three-point bending produced no significant differences in fatigue life when compared to four-point bending. However, three-point bending produced less stiffness loss with increasing cycles than four-point bending. In four-point bending, displacement control was predicted to produce about one and a half orders of magnitude greater fatigue life when compared to load control. This prediction agrees with experimental observations of equine cannon bone tested in load and displacement control (Gibson et al., 1998). Displacement controlled three-point bending was found to produce approximately a 25% greater fatigue life when compared to load control. The prediction of longer fatigue life under displacement control may have clinical relevance for the repair of damaged bone. The model can also be adapted to other geometric configurations, including modeling of whole long bones, and with appropriate fatigue data, other cortical bone types. 相似文献

In the context of reconciling the mechanical properties of trabecular bone measured from in vitro mechanical testing with the true in situ behavior, recent attention has focused on the "side-artifact" which results from interruption of the trabecular network along the sides of machined specimens. The objective of this study was to compare the magnitude of the side-artifact error for measurements of elastic modulus vs. yield stress and to determine the dependence of these errors on anatomic site and trabecular micro-architecture. Using a series of parametric variations on micro-CT-based finite element models of trabecular bone from the human vertebral body (n=24) and femoral neck (n=10), side-artifact correction factors were quantified as the ratio of the side-artifact-free apparent mechanical property to the corresponding property measured in a typical experiment. The mean (+/-SD) correction factors for yield stress were 1.32+/-0.17 vs. 1.20+/-0.11 for the vertebral body and femoral neck (p<0.05), respectively, and the corresponding factors for modulus were 1.24+/-0.09 vs. 1.10+/-0.04 (p<0.0001). Correction factors were greater for yield stress than modulus (p<0.003), but no anatomic site effect was detected (p>0.29) after accounting for variations in bone volume fraction (BV/TV). Approximately 30-55% of the variation in the correction factors for modulus and yield stress could be accounted for by BV/TV or micro-architecture, representing an appreciable systematic component of the error. Although some scatter in the correction factor-BV/TV relationships may confound accurate correction of modulus and yield stress for individual specimens, side-artifact correction is nonetheless essential for obtaining accurate mean estimates of modulus and yield stress for a cohort of specimens. We conclude that appreciation and correction for the differential effects of the side-artifact in modulus vs. yield stress and their dependence on BV/TV may improve the interpretation of measured elastic and failure properties for trabecular bone. 相似文献

The physical principles underlying quantitative ultrasound (QUS) measurements in trabecular bone are not fully understood. The translation of QUS results into bone strength remains elusive. However, ultrasound being mechanical waves, it is likely to assess apparent bone elasticity. The aim of this study is to derive the sensitivity of QUS parameters to variations of apparent bone elasticity, a surrogate for strength. The geometry of 34 human trabecular bone samples cut in the great trochanter was reconstructed using 3-D synchrotron micro-computed tomography. Finite-difference time-domain simulations coupled to 3-D micro-structural models were performed in the three perpendicular directions for each sample and each direction. A voxel-based micro-finite element linear analysis was employed to compute the apparent Young's modulus (E) of each sample for each direction. For the antero-posterior direction, the predictive power of speed of sound and normalized broadband ultrasonic attenuation to assess E was equal to 0.9 and 0.87, respectively, which is better than what is obtained using bone density alone or coupled with micro-architectural parameters and of the same order of what can be achieved with the fabric tensor approach. When the direction of testing is parallel to the main trabecular orientation, the predictive power of QUS parameters decreases and the fabric tensor approach always gives the best results. This decrease can be explained by the presence of two longitudinal wave modes. Our results, which were obtained using two distinct simulation tools applied on the same set of samples, highlight the potential of QUS techniques to assess bone strength. 相似文献

Utilizing the formulation of so-called 'small deformations superimposed on a large initial deformation' the incremental pressure modulus of a ventricle in diastole is studied and the explicit expression of it is obtained as a function of intraventricular pressure. In the analysis the ventricular wall material is assumed to be homogeneous, incompressible, isotropic and the stress-strain relation is exponential. The numerical results for a dog left ventricle indicate that above a critical value of inner pressure the incremental pressure modulus increases with increasing intra-ventricular pressure. Furthermore, the relationship between the stiffness and pressure is seen to be curvilinear (particularly for low pressure level), but for large values of inner pressure the behavior of the curve may be approximated by a set of straight lines. 相似文献

Cyclic loading of bone during daily activities can lead to fatigue degradation and increased risk of fracture in both the young and elderly population. Damage processes under cyclic loading in trabecular bone result in the reduction of the elastic modulus and accumulation of residual strain. These effects increase with increasing stress levels, leading to a progressive reduction in fatigue life. The present work analyzes the effect of stress and strain variation on the above damage processes in bovine trabecular bone, and develops a phenomenological model relating fatigue life to the imposed stress level. The elastic modulus reduction of the bone specimens was observed to depend on the maximum compressive strain, while the rate of residual strain accumulation was a function of the stress level. A model was developed for the upper and lower bounds of bone elastic modulus reduction with increasing number of cycles, at each stress range. The experimental observations were described well by the model. The model predicted the bounds of the fatigue life with change in fatigue stress. The decrease in the fatigue life with increasing stress was related to corresponding increases in the residual strain accumulation rates at the elevated stress levels. The model shows the validity of fatigue predictions from relatively few cyclic experiments, by combining trends observed in the monotonic and the cyclic tests. The model also presents a relatively simple procedure for predicting the endurance limit for bovine trabecular bone specimens. 相似文献

The elastic moduli of human subchondral, trabecular, and cortical bone tissue and the size-dependency of cortical bone modulus 总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
The elastic moduli of human subchondral, trabecular, and cortical bone tissue from a proximal tibia were experimentally determined using three-point bending tests on a microstructural level. The mean modulus of subchondral specimens was 1.15 GPa, and those of trabecular and cortical specimens was 4.59 GPa and 5.44 GPa respectively. Significant differences were found in the modulus values between bone tissues, which may have mainly resulted from the differences in the microstructures of each bone tissue rather than in the mineral density. Furthermore, the size-dependency of the modulus was examined using eight different sizes of cortical specimens (heights h = 100-1000 microns). While the modulus values for relatively large specimens (h greater than 500 microns) remained fairly constant (approximately 15 GPa), the values decreased as the specimens became smaller. A significant correlation was found between the modulus and specimen size. The surface area to volume ratio proved to be a key variable to explain the size-dependency. 相似文献

Elastic modulus and strength of trabecular bone are negatively affected by osteoporosis and other metabolic bone diseases. Micro-computed tomography-based beam models have been presented as a fast and accurate way to determine bone competence. However, these models are not accurate for trabecular bone specimens with a high number of plate-like trabeculae. Therefore, the aim of this study was to improve this promising methodology by representing plate-like trabeculae in a way that better reflects their mechanical behavior. Using an optimized skeletonization and meshing algorithm, voxel-based models of trabecular bone samples were simplified into a complex structure of rods and plates. Rod-like and plate-like trabeculae were modeled as beam and shell elements, respectively, using local histomorphometric characteristics. To validate our model, apparent elastic modulus was determined from simulated uniaxial elastic compression of 257 cubic samples of trabecular bone (4mm×4mm×4mm; 30μm voxel size; BIOMED I project) in three orthogonal directions using the beam-shell models and using large-scale voxel models that served as the gold standard. Excellent agreement (R(2)=0.97) was found between the two, with an average CPU-time reduction factor of 49 for the beam-shell models. In contrast to earlier skeleton-based beam models, the novel beam-shell models predicted elastic modulus values equally well for structures from different skeletal sites. It allows performing detailed parametric analyses that cover the entire spectrum of trabecular bone microstructures. 相似文献

The role of an effective isotropic tissue modulus in the elastic properties of cancellous bone. 总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
Conceptually, the elastic characteristics of cancellous bone could be predicted directly from the trabecular morphology--or architecture--and by the elastic properties of the tissue itself. Although hardly any experimental evidence exists, it is often implicitly assumed that tissue anisotropy has a negligible effect on the apparent elastic properties of cancellous bone. The question addressed in this paper is whether this is actually true. If it is, then micromechanical finite element analysis (micro-FEA) models, representing trabecular architecture, using an 'effective isotropic tissue modulus' should be able to predict apparent elastic properties of cancellous bone. To test this, accurate multi-axial compressive mechanical tests of 29 whale bone specimens were simulated with specimen-specific micro-FEA computer models built from true three-dimensional reconstructions. By scaling the micro-FEA predictions by a constant tissue modulus, 92% of the variation of Young's moduli determined experimentally could be explained. The correlation even increased to 95% when the micro-FEA moduli were scaled to the isotropic tissue moduli of individual specimens. Excellent agreement was also found in the elastic symmetry axes and anisotropy ratios. The prediction of Poisson's ratios was somewhat less precise at 85% correlation. The results support the hypothesis; for practical purposes, the concept of an 'effective isotropic tissue modulus' concept is a viable one. They also suggest that the value of such a modulus for individual cases might be inferred from the average tissue density, hence the degree of mineralization. Future studies must clarify how specific the tissue modulus should be for different types of bone if adequate predictions of elastic behavior are to be made in this way. 相似文献

Background
Bronchial hyperreactivity is influenced by properties of the conducting airways and the surrounding pulmonary parenchyma, which is tethered to the conducting airways. Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) is associated with an increase in airway hyperreactivity in rats and a decrease in the volume density of alveoli and alveolar ducts. To better define the effects of VAD on the mechanical properties of the pulmonary parenchyma, we have studied the elastic modulus, elastic fibers and elastin gene-expression in rats with VAD, which were supplemented with retinoic acid (RA) or remained unsupplemented. Methods
Parenchymal mechanics were assessed before and after the administration of carbamylcholine (CCh) by determining the bulk and shear moduli of lungs that that had been removed from rats which were vitamin A deficient or received a control diet. Elastin mRNA and insoluble elastin were quantified and elastic fibers were enumerated using morphometric methods. Additional morphometric studies were performed to assess airway contraction and alveolar distortion. Results
VAD produced an approximately 2-fold augmentation in the CCh-mediated increase of the bulk modulus and a significant dampening of the increase in shear modulus after CCh, compared to vitamin A sufficient (VAS) rats. RA-supplementation for up to 21 days did not reverse the effects of VAD on the elastic modulus. VAD was also associated with a decrease in the concentration of parenchymal elastic fibers, which was restored and was accompanied by an increase in tropoelastin mRNA after 12 days of RA-treatment. Lung elastin, which was resistant to 0.1 N NaOH at 98°, decreased in VAD and was not restored after 21 days of RA-treatment.Conclusion
Alterations in parenchymal mechanics and structure contribute to bronchial hyperreactivity in VAD but they are not reversed by RA-treatment, in contrast to the VAD-related alterations in the airways. 相似文献18.

We present results on the growth of damage in 29 fatigue tests of human femoral cortical bone from four individuals, aged 53-79. In these tests we examine the interdependency of stress, cycles to failure, rate of creep strain, and rate of modulus loss. The behavior of creep rates has been reported recently for the same donors as an effect of stress and cycles. In the present paper we first examine how the evolution of damage (drop in modulus per cycle) is associated with the stress level or the "normalized stress" level (stress divided by specimen modulus), and results show the rate of modulus loss fits better as a function of normalized stress. However, we find here that even better correlations can be established between either the cycles to failure or creep rates versus rates of damage than any of these three measures versus normalized stress. The data indicate that damage rates can be excellent predictors of fatigue life and creep strain rates in tensile fatigue of human cortical bone for use in practical problems and computer simulations. 相似文献

Bone mass is the most important determinant of the mechanical strength of bones, and spatial structure is the second. In general, the spatial structure and mechanical properties of bones such as the breaking strength are direction dependent. The mean intercept length (MIL) and line frequency deviation (LFD) are two methods for quantifying directional aspects of the spatial structure of bone. Young's modulus is commonly used to describe the stiffness of bone, which is also a direction-dependent mechanical property. The aim of this article is to investigate the relation between MIL and LFD on one hand and Young's modulus on the other. From 11 human mandibular condyles, 44 samples were taken and scanned with high-resolution computer tomography equipment (micro-CT). For each sample the MIL and LFD were determined in 72602 directions distributed evenly in 3D space. In the same directions Young's modulus was determined by means of the stiffness tensor that had been determined for each sample by finite element analysis. To investigate the relation between the MIL and LFD on one hand and Young's modulus on the other, multiple regression was used. On average the MIL accounted for 69% of the variance in Young's modulus in the 44 samples and the LFD accounted for 72%. The average percentage of variance accounted for increased to 80% when the MIL was combined with the LFD to predict Young's modulus. Obviously MIL and LFD to some extent are complementary with respect to predicting Young's modulus. It is known that directional plots of the MIL tend to be ellipses or ellipsoids. It is speculated that ellipsoids are not always sufficient to describe Young's modulus of a bone sample and that the LFD partly compensates for this. 相似文献
