90–100 Copper-nickel is an alloy which has been used widely for its corrosion resistance in sea water. It is also recognised, like copper, for its biofouling-resistant properties. As the alloy is readily fabricated and welded, its overall properties make it ideal for the sheathing of boat hulls, offshore structures and other applications requiring protection against the ravages of marine environments. This paper describes the properties of 90–100 copper-nickel and discusses the various types of sheathing which have developed in more recent times. The performance of the alloy is demonstrated by exposure trials and service experience.  相似文献

Many studies have experimentally addressed the effects of a particular predator species on prey behavior. In nature, however, prey frequently face multiple species of predators that often vary in their predatory mode and in their level of predation risk. Relatively few studies have considered prey responses under these complex conditions. In Kentucky, the stream-dwelling water strider (Aquariusremigis) coexists with many potentially dangerous predators, two of which are the green sunfish (Lepomiscyanellus) and the fishing spider (Dolomedesvittatus). Green sunfish occupy stream pools and attack water striders from below. In contrast, fishing spiders hunt along stream shorelines where they perch on overhanging vegetation or rocks and attack water striders near shore. We compared how A. remigis individuals respond to these two very different predators in pools with one or both predators. The presence of sunfish in pools had strong effects on male water strider behavior, including increased use of three types of refuge from sunfish (riffles, climbing out of the water, sitting on the water but at the edges of pools), decreased activity and a decreased number of aggressive males on the water. Spiders also influenced water strider behavior; male water striders avoided spiders by shifting away from the edges of pools. Comparisons of the effects of the two predator species showed that in general, antipredator responses by male water striders were stronger in pools with fish alone than in those with spiders alone. In the presence of both predators, male water strider behavior (microhabitat use and activity) was generally similar to behavior in the presence of fish alone. In contrast, female water striders showed no significant response to the presence of sunfish, and little response to the presence of spiders. This lack of response could be because females spent much of their time in refuges even in the absence of predators (apparently hiding from harassment by males). Both spiders and fish caused decreases in water strider mating activity. The presence of fish reduced both the number of matings per pool (mating frequency), and mean mating durations. Spiders induced a decrease in mean mating duration, but not in mating frequency. The largest reductions in mating activity occurred in pools with both predators present. Pools with either spiders or fish alone suffered 15–20% water strider mortality during our experiment (versus no mortality in predator-free pools). Extant theory suggests that when prey face conflicting microhabitat responses to two predators (as in this study), the predators should have facilitative effects on predation rates (i.e., prey that avoid one predator are often killed by the other and vice versa). Mortality rates in pools with both predators present, however, were not significantly different from that predicted by a null model of multiple predator effects. The lack of predator facilitation can be explained by the compensatory reductions in water strider activity and mating activity in the presence of both predators. Water striders have remarkable water-repellent legs that enable them to stand effortlessly and move quickly on water.Fluidphysics indicates this feature is due to a surface-tension effect caused by the special hierarchical structure of the legs,which arecovered with a large number of inclined setae with fine nanogrooves inducing water resistance.This inspires us to fabricatespecial water-repellent structure on functional surfaces through the cooperation between the surface treatment and the surfacemicro-and nanostructures,which may bring great advantages in a wide variety of applications.In this paper we present aprocedure for fabricating biomimetic water strider legs covered with setae using Polycarbonate Track-Etched(PCTE)membranesas templates.By choosing appropriate membrane lengths,diameters,pitches and densities of the setae,the biomimeticlegs can be fabricated conveniently and at a low cost.Furthermore we investigated the relationship between stiffness of themolding materials,high aspect ratio and density,which affect the fidelity of fabrication and self adhesion,to optimize thestability of setae.The knowledge we gained from this study will offer important insights into the biomimetic design and fabricationof water strider setae.  相似文献

Water striders are a model system for the study of sexual size dimorphism, but the effect of body size on the dominance relationship between individuals has not been experimentally tested. In 34 staged contests between males of the water strider Aquarius paludum, we determined the effect of body size difference between contestants on the outcome of the aggressive interactions. In contests between a large and a small male, the larger individuals won the interactions significantly more often than expected by chance. This is the first experimental evidence for the importance of body size in pair-wise contests among water striders.  相似文献

Abstract This review summarises the literature on bacterial gene transfer in marine ecosystems. Relevant experiments carried out in model systems are also included. Prerequisites for the main gene transfer mechanisms, transformation, transduction and conjugation are discussed, such as concentrations of extracellular DNA in marine waters, numbers of bacteriophages in sea water and frequency of plasmids in marine bacteria. Transfer of chromosomal genes as well as plasmids are considered. We also discuss the possibility that gene transfer is more frequent in surface-associated bacterial communities. Examples of relevant studies using various solid surfaces and from the air-water interface are summarized. We suggest that there is a higher ‘flow-rate’ of genetic information through surface-associated communities compared to bulk water communities.  相似文献

Short-lived, high-intensity turbulence in aquatic environments—or episodic turbulence—has been shown to cause mortality in zooplankton, but its effects on marine phytoplankton have rarely been investigated. Episodic turbulence derives from anthropogenic and natural causes such as boat propellers, strong winds, and breaking waves. This study focused on the effects of episodic turbulence on two diatoms: Thalassiosira weissflogii and Skeletonema costatum. 45 s exposure to turbulence intensities above 2.5 cm2 s?3 reduced diatom abundance by up to 32% and increased the number of intact dead cells by 22%. After exposure to 4.0 cm2 s?3, photosynthetic efficiency decreased by 25 and 9% in T. weissflogii and S. costatum, respectively. Turbulence also caused extracellular release of optically reactive DOM and biologically important trace metals such as iron. The turbulence levels tested are comparable to those under breaking surface waves and are substantially lower than those generated by boat propellers. An improved technique using the Evans Blue stain was developed to enable visual live/dead plankton cell determinations. When used in conjunction with preservation and flow cytometry, this staining method provides a way to study phytoplankton mortality due to turbulence and other environmental stresses.  相似文献

Non‐native invasive species are a major threat to biodiversity, especially in freshwater ecosystems. Freshwater ecosystems are naturally rather isolated from one another. Nonetheless, invasive species often spread rapidly across water sheds. This spread is to a large extent realized by human activities that provide vectors. For example, recreational boats can carry invasive species propagules as “aquatic hitch‐hikers” within and across water sheds. We used invasive gobies in Switzerland as a case study to test the plausibility that recreational boats can serve as vectors for invasive fish and that fish eggs can serve as propagules. We found that the peak season of boat movements across Switzerland and the goby spawning season overlap temporally. It is thus plausible that goby eggs attached to boats, anchors, or gear may be transported across watersheds. In experimental trials, we found that goby eggs show resistance to physical removal (90 mN attachment strength of individual eggs) and stay attached if exposed to rapid water flow (2.8 m·s−1for 1 h). When exposing the eggs to air, we found that hatching success remained high (>95%) even after eggs had been out of water for up to 24 h. It is thus plausible that eggs survive pick up, within‐water and overland transport by boats. We complemented the experimental plausibility tests with a survey on how decision makers from inside and outside academia rate the feasibility of managing recreational boats as vectors. We found consensus that an installation of a preventive boat vector management is considered an effective and urgent measure. This study advances our understanding of the potential of recreational boats to serve as vectors for invasive vertebrate species and demonstrates that preventive management of recreational boats is considered feasible by relevant decision makers inside and outside academia.  相似文献

Reliable abundance estimates are critical for management and conservation of coastal small cetaceans. This is particularly important in developing countries where coastal human populations are increasing, the impacts of anthropogenic activities are often unknown, and the resources necessary to assess coastal cetaceans are limited. We adapted ship‐based line transect methods to small‐boat surveys to estimate the abundance of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) at Turneffe Atoll, Belize. Using a systematic survey design with random start and uniform coverage, 34 dolphin clusters were sighted during small‐boat line transect surveys conducted in 2005–2006. Distance sampling methods estimated abundance at 216 individuals (CV = 27.7%, 95% CI = 126–370). Due to species rarity in the Atoll, small sample size, and potential violations in line transect assumptions, the estimate should be considered preliminary. Nevertheless, it provides up‐to‐date information on the status of a regional population in an area under increasing threat of habitat loss and prey depletion via uncontrolled development and unsustainable fishing. This information will be useful as Belize develops a new conservation initiative to create a comprehensive and resilient marine protected area system. Our study illustrates the application of distance sampling methods to small‐boat surveys to obtain abundance estimates of coastal cetaceans in a region lacking resources.  相似文献

This conceptual paper addresses the role of lysosomal autophagy in cellular defense against environmentally-induced oxidative stress using a marine mollusc (the blue mussel) as an experimental model. It is proposed that augmented autophagic removal of oxidatively damaged organelles and proteins provides a second level or tier of defense against oxidative stress. Age pigment or lipofuscin is a product of oxidative attack on proteins and lipids and can accumulate in lysosomes, where it may generate further reactive oxygen species (ROS) and inhibit lysosomal function, resulting in autophagic failure. The previously observed protective role of augmented autophagy, induced by nutritional deprivation, against oxidative stress can be explained by this model, where autophagy boosts "cellular housekeeping" through enhanced removal of ROS-damaged proteins and organelles minimizing formation of potentially harmful stress/age pigment, and has been proposed as an anti-aging mechanism. Finally, the probable low level triggering of autophagy in mussels by fluctuating environmental regimes is considered as a potential protective mechanism that will contribute to resistance to environmentally induced oxidative stress. It is further conjectured that organisms making up functional ecological assemblages (communities) in fluctuating environments, where upregulation of autophagy should provide a selective advantage, may be pre-selected to be tolerant of pollutant-induced oxidative stress.  相似文献

This work presents an hydrodynamical model of heat stroke, which is a physiopathological state of stress, due to an exposure of animals to an ambient temperature of approximatively 40°C during two hours. The evolution of body temperature during this stress process is characterised by three phases. A first phase of increase is followed by a plateau which occurs before a second phase of increase which can be lethal. The model is based on the analogy of a boat progressively caught in a whirlpool. The evolution of the degree of freedom lost by the boat is mathematically analysed and this study leads to the same three phases. The theoretical curves calculated during this study are well in agreement with the experimental curves obtained with animals. This analogy is compared to a previous one which has been made during another experiment with animals constrained by chemical intoxications. It seems that stress can be considered as a vital vorticity and that hydrodynamic models are powerful tools in understanding this physiopathological state.  相似文献

Computer simulation of bend propagation by axoplasmic microtubules   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The generation of bending waves by microtubules in squid nerve axoplasm has been modelled using appropriately modified versions of computer programs developed previously for simulation of flagellar bending waves. The results confirm that a constant longitudinal force directed along the axis of the microtubule is sufficient to cause the generation of regular oscillations and propagated bending waves when the forward gliding movement of the microtubule is obstructed. No control mechanism is required to modulate the active force-generating system. In order to obtain bending waves similar to those observed experimentally, it was necessary to use a model for the force-generating system in which the active force decreases with increasing sliding velocity. If the elastic bending resistance of axoplasmic microtubules is similar to that of microtubules in sperm terminal filaments, the longitudinal force per unit length generated by the axoplasmic microtubules must be of the same order of magnitude as the force generated by dynein arms along the doublet microtubules of eukaryotic flagella.  相似文献

A better understanding of water motion effects on nutrient uptake by marine crop plants should make it possible to farm the sea more effectively. Farms in China, Japan and the Philippines now grow plants on slack lines or nets that move with passing waves and currents. Nutrient uptake rates are increased onLaminaria farms in China by adding nitrogen-containing fertilizer. In contrast, forests of the giant kelp,Macrocystis grow in California at low nutrient levels without fertilization. The giant kelp, compared as a structure with the slack Chinese farms, has float-supported, spring-like stipes that stretch and recoil as waves pass. This motion seems likely to enhance flow over the thallus surface. In thus study we modified flow around kelp blades in a water tunnel in the laboratory by changing orifice plates, and flow around Chinese-style long-line farms in the sea by tightening them under various sea conditions. Our measurements suggest that if marine farms were designed and operated to increase water movement over the plants being grown, their rates of nutrient uptake, and growth would increase.This paper was presented at the Symposium on Applied Phycology at the Fourth International Phycological Congress, Duke University.  相似文献

Effects of fishing on marine communities are becoming increasingly evident, yet little is known of the spatial extent of impacts, particularly for multiple impacts distributed over broad scales. We tested the common perception that commercial and recreational fishing on inshore temperate reefs generate spatial impacts that diminish with distance from fisher access points. We collected data on harvested and non-harvested reef species using underwater visual censuses at 133 shallow rocky reef sites around Tasmania and tested for relationships between assemblage and species level indices of fishing impacts and distance to the nearest boat launching ramp. Slopes of size spectra of fish communities tended to decrease with distance from the nearest boat ramp, with this relationship apparently resulting from low numbers of large fish (> 30 cm TL) and a greater number of smaller fish (< 15 cm TL) at sites closest to access points. At the species level, relationships were evident either in the abundance of legal individuals or the mean size of harvested species with distance to the nearest boat ramp, except for rock lobster. Patterns for rock lobster differed when areas in which commercial or recreational fisheries dominated were considered separately from the statewide analysis. A pattern of increasing numbers of legal lobsters with increasing distance from boat ramps was observed, but only in the areas in which the recreational fishery dominated. Observed relationships in all species were consistent with greater fishing impacts at sites closest to boat ramps, with the exception of exploited wrasses. Banded morwong, which are subject to a live export fishery, appeared to be most affected by proximity to boat ramps. Conversely, no relationships were found between the abundance or size of the most frequently occurring non-harvested species and distance to boat ramps.These results support the hypothesis that greater fishing impacts occur at more accessible sites over the entire Tasmanian coastline. The variability of results among individual species are likely, at least in part, to be related to differences in fisheries characteristics such as vessel size and range, as well as the suitability of our methods for detecting impacts. The potential of such a pattern in fishing impacts to be evident in other locations will thus likely depend on characteristics of the particular fishes and fisheries.  相似文献

1. The stream water strider Aquarius remigis shows a latitudinal pattern of variation in voltinism. In general, populations with shorter growing seasons (e.g. in eastern Canada) tend to be univoltine (animals that reach adulthood in the summer overwinter before reproducing in the following spring), whereas populations with somewhat longer growing seasons (e.g. in the north-eastern United States) tend to be bivoltine. 2. This pattern was broken at our study site in the south-eastern United States (Kentucky) where A. remigis had a long growing season, but was almost always univoltine. In summer 1993, however, adult A. remigis in central Kentucky displayed a bivoltine reproductive cycle; i.e. individuals in some pools began breeding shortly after maturing to the adult stage. 3. A field survey documented a negative relationship between local water strider density and reproductive activity in prediapause adults. A laboratory experiment manipulating food availability and density, revealed that animals held at low density with high food levels displayed greater mating activity and egg production than did their counterparts at higher density or lower food levels. 4. A laboratory experiment also showed that high water strider density resulted in a greater frequency of very short pair durations (< 10 min). 5. Although the observed effects of density and food availability on mating activity of prediapause adults seem intuitively reasonable, they differ from the patterns observed in overwintered adults. The difference in reproduction patterns might be due to differences in selective pressures on prediapause vs. post-diapause adults.  相似文献

In the last three decades, rapid assessment surveys have become an important approach for measuring aquatic ecosystem biodiversity. These methods can be used to detect anthropogenic impacts and recognize local or global species extinctions. We present a floristic survey of the aquatic macrophytes along the Brazilian margin of the Itaipu Reservoir conducted in 2008 and compare this with a floristic survey conducted ten years earlier. We used ordination analysis to determine whether assemblage composition differed among reservoir arms. Macrophyte species were sampled in each of the 235 sampling stations using a boat, which was positioned inside three places of each macrophyte stand to record species and search for small plants. We also collected submerged plants using a rake with the boat moving at constant velocity for ten minutes. We assigned individual macrophyte species to life form and identified representative species for each life form. A total of 87 macrophyte taxa were identified. The "emergent" life forms contained the highest number of species, followed by "rooted submerged" life forms. The extensive survey of macrophytes undertaken in September 2008 recorded more species than a survey conducted between 1995 and 1998. This could be due to changes in water physico-chemistry, disturbances due to water drawdown and the long period between surveys, which may have allowed natural colonization by other species. Additionally, differences in the classification systems and taxonomic resolution used in the surveys may account for differences in the number of species recorded. Assemblage composition varied among the arms and was affected by underwater radiation (as measured using a Secchi disk) and fetch. Five non-native species were found. Two of these non-native species (Urochloa subquadripara and Hydrilla verticillata) are of special concern because they have a high frequency of occurrence and occupy large marginal areas of the reservoir. Future surveys should be conducted to determine the habitat most frequently colonized by these species. This would allow management strategies to be developed to protect native aquatic biota and prevent interference with the recreational and commercial uses of the Itaipu Reservoir.  相似文献

Disturbance from boats has been documented for many species of marine mammals, especially cetaceans, but has never been quantified for dugongs. Dugongs depend on seagrass for food. This food mostly occurs in shallow coastal areas where boat traffic is high. Thus there is potential for boats to alienate dugongs from critical habitat areas. Using an overhead video observation system (‘blimp-cam’), we observed the behaviour of focal dugongs during controlled boat pass experiments and while no boats were present. The percentage of time focal dugongs spent feeding and travelling was unaffected by boat presence, the number of boat passes and whether a pass included a stop and restart (pass continuity). The duration, distance and direction of a focal dugong's subsurface behaviour were unaffected by number, continuity or distance of boat passes. However, focal dugongs were less likely to continue feeding if the boat passed within 50 m, than if the boat passed at a greater distance. Mass movements of dugong feeding herds in response to experimental and opportunistically observed boats were timed on 42 occasions but only lasted an average of 122 s. These movements occurred in response to boats passing at a range of speeds, and at distances of less than 50 m to over 500 m. The levels of boat traffic we observed may reduce dugongs' feeding time budget by a maximum of 0.8-6%. Thus at present boats appear unlikely to be having a substantive effect on the energy intake of dugong populations at our study site on the Moreton Banks near Brisbane, Australia. However, boat traffic is likely to increase in this fast growing region, raising concern about the future impact of boats on this and other dugong populations.  相似文献

Our study showed that one species of water strider (Aquarius najas) dominated the insect fauna (>90% of the biomass) on and near the surface of a small stream in southern Sweden, but the diet of Daubenton's bats (Myotis daubentonii), regularly feeding over the same stream, contained <1% of these insects. To explain why the bats did not eat water striders in proportion to the apparent abundance of these insects, we tested three hypotheses, with the following results: (1) The water striders did not respond to artificial bat calls and therefore their defence against bats is not based on ultrasonic hearing. (2) Water striders hand-fed to the bats were eaten with similar frequency as palatable controls (caddis flies), so there is no evidence that water striders are unpalatable to bats. (3) Attempted prey-captures by the bats occurred less often than expected within 1 m of the bank of the stream (the bank consisted of a stone wall), indicating that the bats' flight or, alternatively, their detection or capture of insects, was difficult within that area, possibly constrained by clutter. At dusk and just before the bats emerged to feed, the water striders moved away from the open water. They remained motionless close to the bank for as long as the bats were active.  相似文献

Summary A model is developed for the rate of elongation of a root tip in terms of the balance of pressures acting on the root. Differentials of this equation give expressions for the changes in root elongation rate with respect to soil water potential and soil mechanical resistance. The model predicts that root cells osmoregulate against both water stress and soil mechanical resistance with predicts that root cells osmoregulate against both water stress and soil mechanical resistance with similar efficiencies which are less than 100%. Analysis of published data leads to the conclusion that root tips of pea osmoregulate with 70% efficiency. A working equation is developed for the elongation rate of roots in conditions of combined water stress and mechanical resistance.  相似文献

Three major behavioural mechanisms underlying sexual selection in many systems are male-male competition, female choice and male-female conflict. We used path analysis to evaluate the relative importance of these mechanisms in generating sexual selection on a suite of male traits in the stream-dwelling water strider, Aquarius remigis. To gather data for the analysis, we quantified the morphology (total length, limb length, forefemur width, genital length), behaviour (activity), mating frequency, mean mating duration and overall mating success of 96 adult males over a 10-day period. Males varied considerably in mating success. Over the 10 days, individual males mated 0-14 times, spending 0-67% of their time in copula. Path analysis showed that male-male competition was important in favouring larger males with longer limbs that tended to be more active. Active males should encounter females more frequently. In water striders, almost all male-female encounters result in intense premating struggles pitting female resistance to mating against male insistence. This male-female conflict favoured larger males with longer genitalia. These traits help males overcome female resistance. Female choice was expressed via female-controlled variation in mate-guarding durations. Female choice favoured smaller males perhaps because they are lighter, less expensive ‘shields’ against harassment by other males. Male size thus affected mating success via all three behavioural mechanisms. Weak, overall sexual selection favouring larger males was the product of conflicting effects: male-female conflict strongly favouring larger males and male-male competition weakly favouring larger males, offset by female choice favouring smaller males. Separate analyses for warmer versus colder days showed that on colder days (daily high below 20 °C), male-male competition was the main mechanism generating variation in mating frequency, while on warmer days, both male-male competition and male-female conflict were important. Ecosystem services provided by oceans and seas support most human needs but are threatened by human activities. Despite existing maps illustrating human impacts on marine ecosystems, information remains either large-scale but rough and insufficient for stakeholders (1 km² grid, lack of data along the coast) or fine-scale but fragmentary and heterogeneous in methodology. The objectives of this study are to map and quantify the main pressures exerted on near-coast marine ecosystems, at a large spatial scale though in fine and relevant resolution for managers (one pixel = 20 x 20 m). It focuses on the French Mediterranean coast (1,700 km of coastline including Corsica) at a depth of 0 to 80 m. After completing and homogenizing data presently available under GIS on the bathymetry and anthropogenic pressures but also on the seabed nature and ecosystem vulnerability, we provide a fine modeling of the extent and impacts of 10 anthropogenic pressures on marine habitats. The considered pressures are man-made coastline, boat anchoring, aquaculture, urban effluents, industrial effluents, urbanization, agriculture, coastline erosion, coastal population and fishing. A 1:10 000 continuous habitat map is provided considering 11 habitat classes. The marine bottom is mostly covered by three habitats: infralittoral soft bottom, Posidonia oceanica meadows and circalittoral soft bottom. Around two thirds of the bottoms are found within medium and medium high cumulative impact categories. Seagrass meadows are the most impacted habitats. The most important pressures (in area and intensity) are urbanization, coastal population, coastal erosion and man-made coastline. We also identified areas in need of a special management interest. This work should contribute to prioritize environmental needs, as well as enhance the development of indicators for the assessment of the ecological status of coastal systems. It could also help better apply and coordinate management measures at a relevant scale for biodiversity conservation.  相似文献
