Synopsis The downstream transport of fish larvae is well known from temperate running waters, but there exists remarkably little information for tropical streams. We sampled drift in two Andean piedmont streams during the dry seasons of 1986–1988. Bryconamericus deuterodonoides (Characidae) larvae were found to be extremely abundant in some drift collections, with peak drift densities exceeding those of temperate streams by as much as an order of magnitude. Drift of fish larvae displayed pronounced diel periodicity, with more than one-quarter of a million larvae collected during the night compared to two individuals during the day. Fish larvae were more abundant during the latter compared to early part of the dry season, even in years when streams were reduced to small isolated pools by the end of the season. These observations indicate that the dry season represents an important period of reproduction for the characid, Bryconamericus deuterodonoides, and possibly other neotropical fish species.  相似文献

Aphidophagous coccinellid larvae have a wide range of potential prey in alfalfa and during times of low aphid abundance, larvae may supplement their diet with alternative prey. To understand the effects of the seasonal aphid availability on alternative prey use, an order-specific monoclonal antibody, DrosW-VI-B8, was used to examine the frequency of dipteran predation by these important natural enemies. Over 400 larvae were hand-collected from alfalfa and, in parallel, arthropod abundance was recorded. Harmonia axyridis and Coccinella septempunctata larvae were abundant early in the season when aphid populations were at their peak and Coleomegilla maculata larvae were collected later in the season when potato leafhoppers were abundant in the alfalfa. A relatively low proportion of field-collected H. axyridis, C. septempunctata, and C. maculata tested positive for dipteran proteins throughout the season. Similar to prior studies examining stage differences in coccinellid food breadth, older instars tested positive for dipteran proteins (3rd instar, 6% positive; 4th instar, 7% positive) but no early instars screened positive. This study provides a valuable insight into the trophic linkages that exist between coccinellid larvae and Diptera.  相似文献

In areas of the Cerrado biome (Brazilian savanna) with well‐defined rainy and dry seasons, changes in climate and landscape affect the abundance and seasonality of insects. Larvae of the antlion Myrmeleon brasiliensis (Návas) (Neuroptera: Myrmeleontidae) are predators that build traps in dry sandy soil to capture prey. Here we determined the effect of rain on trap building by M. brasiliensis larvae in a riparian forest in the Cerrado biome. Differences in population size and developmental stage were found between the rainy and dry seasons. In the laboratory, the effect of rain‐soaked soil on trap building was evaluated. Fewer antlion larvae were found in the rainy season. Moreover, a greater abundance of larvae in the final stage of development (third instar) was found in the dry season, whereas more first instars were found in the rainy season. The latter revealed that wet soil affects the trap building of the larvae, as smaller traps were built in the treatment with soaked soil (simulated rain), whereas the larvae in the control treatment (no rain) continued building traps with no change in size. The findings indicate that seasonality in the Cerrado biome exerts a short‐term influence on M. brasiliensis larvae (larvae build fewer traps) as well as a long‐term influence (association with life cycle).  相似文献

From 2003 to 2007, entomological surveys were conducted in Lobito town (Benguela Province, Angola) to determine which Anopheles species were present and to identify the vectors responsible for malaria transmission in areas where workers of the Sonamet Company live. Two types of surveys were conducted: (1) time and space surveys in the low and upper parts of Lobito during the rainy and dry periods; (2) a two‐year longitudinal study in Sonamet workers' houses provided with long‐lasting insecticide‐treated nets (LLIN), “PermaNet,” along with the neighboring community. Both species, An. coluzzii (M molecular form) and An. gambiae (S molecular form), were collected. Anopheles coluzzii was predominant during the dry season in the low part of Lobito where larvae develop in natural ponds and temporary pools. However, during the rainy season, An. gambiae was found in higher proportions in the upper part of the town where larvae were collected in domestic water tanks built near houses. Anopheles melas and An. listeri were captured in higher numbers during the dry season and in the low part of Lobito where larvae develop in stagnant brackish water pools. The infectivity rates of An. gambiae s.l. varied from 0.90% to 3.41%.  相似文献

The relative importance of intraspecific, interspecific, and seasonal causes of larval mortality were investigated for aquatic larvae of the giant damselfly Megaloprepus coerulatus in Panama. These larvae live in water-filled holes in fallen and living trees, where they and three other common odonate species are the top predators. By mid wet season, M. coerulatus larvae were found in nearly half of all tree holes that harbored odonates. Although M. coerulatus were typically, but not always, eliminated from holes inhabited by larger hetero-specifics, M. coerulatus were more likely to encounter conspecifics than other odonate species. Hole with less than 11 of water rarely contained more than a single larva. In large holes where M. coerulatus was the only odonate species present, multiple larvae coexisted at a density of one larva per 1–21 of water. There the absence of 2–4 of the 5 larval size classes, despite a continuous input of eggs, suggested that cannibalism was a common cause of mortality. The size of the final instar, which determined adult body size, was correlated positively with tree hole volume for male, but not female, larvae. Experiments showed that when two larvae were placed together in 0.4–1 holes with abundant tadpole prey, the larger larva killed the smaller one. Often the larva that was killed was not eaten. Small larvae were more tolerant of each other than were pairs of medium or large larvae. Before killing occurred, the presence of larger larvae reduced the growth of smaller individuals, relative to controls. Obligate killing was density-dependent. In 3.0–1 holes with ad libitum prey, conspecific killing occurred until the larval density stabilized at one larva per 1–1.5 I, similar to the density found in large holes under field conditions, For M. coerulatus, cannibalism functions to reduce the number of potential competitors for food in addition to providing nutrition. When interactions between paired larvae in small holes were experimentally prevented, competition for food reduced the growth of one or both larvae relative to controls. Holes that were watered during the dry season supported larval densities similar to those in the wet season. Thus, dry season mortality could not be attributed to a decrease in available prey. Rather, M. coerulatus larvae could not survive more than 1 month of complete drying. Because the dry season typically lasts more than 6 weeks, habitat drying is a secondary source of mortality, affecting second- or third-generation larvae that fail to emerge before tree holes dry out completely.  相似文献

Feeding habits of early life stages of the channichthyid Chionodraco hamatus were investigated on samples collected in the western Ross Sea in early summer of 1996 and 2004. The stomach content analysis was carried out on larval and postlarval specimens ranging from 14 to 39 mm SL. Unlike larvae and juveniles of other channichthyids, which elsewhere largely rely on early life stages of Antarctic krill or ice krill, no euphausiids were found in the stomach contents of C. hamatus, except for a single large individual of Thysanoessa macrura. In both years, dietary composition consisted almost exclusively of notothenioid fish larvae. Early larvae of Pleuragramma antarcticum overwhelmingly dominated the diet in terms of abundance, biomass and frequency of occurrence, accounting for 98.4% of the index of relative importance (IRI). Other fish larvae consumed occasionally in small amount were Trematomus lepidorhinus, T. scotti and C. hamatus itself. As a result, the feeding strategy of C. hamatus was considerably shifted toward specialization, relying on relatively few taxa of prey, each of them showing a high prey-specific abundance. Comparing both dietary composition and feeding strategy of C. hamatus in the two different sampling years, several differences were observed, probably due to different environmental conditions, mainly linked to a significant delay of ice retreat and formation of the Ross Sea polynya verified in the 2003–2004 summer season.  相似文献

1.1972—1982年我们在东海采集到绿鲭马面纯仔、稚鱼3,085尾,仔、稚鱼体长为1.46—9.25毫米。 2.根据人工授精资料,我们鉴定为绿鳍马面纯的仔、稚鱼,并对各发育阶段的形态特征进行了描述。 3.绿鳍马面纯的产卵场、产卵期了解很少。根据调查和观察,产卵期为4月上旬到5月中旬,主要产卵期在4月中、下旬。产卵场在我国钓鱼岛西北部。 4.绿鳍马面鲀产卵与黑潮暖流的高温、高盐水有关。产卵场水温主要为22°—23℃.盐度在34.50‰以上,水深80米以上的海区。  相似文献

Ecological aspects of recruitment in the amphidromous goby, Sicyopterus japonicus, were studied from larval collections made with a set net in the estuary of the Ota River, Wakayama, Japan. The abundance patterns of the 12,766 larvae collected from 18 April to 26 August 2006 showed several peaks during the recruitment season. Their body sizes at recruitment ranged from 23.5 to 30.0 mm standard length (mean ± SD, 26.3 ± 1.1 mm), 0.11 to 0.49 g body weight (0.22 ± 0.05 g), and 8 to 20 condition factor (11 ± 2). The standard length of the goby larvae tended to decrease with the season, while their body weight slightly increased and resulted in an increase in condition factor. The recruitment of larvae occurred mainly during the daytime. Otolith growth increment analysis of 30 larvae collected by a square lift net on 30 April 2005 revealed that the oceanic larval duration after downstream migration ranged from 173 to 253 days (208 ± 22) after hatching. A limited time of recruitment in early summer and a considerably long duration of oceanic life (about a half year) appeared to be unique characteristics of this Sicyopterus species that lives in a temperate region in comparison to other tropical species of the genus Sicyopterus that all have year-round recruitment.  相似文献

Synopsis An estimate of the arithmetic mean number of larvalAnisakis simplex per salmon,Salmo salar, in the north Atlantic was obtained from data collected off west Greenland where salmon from both sides of the Atlantic intermingle. An average of 5.34 larvae was found in the body cavity or associated viscera of 771 age 1 salmon representing some 60.8% of the total number of larvae present. LarvalA. simplex were found at all sampling stations throughout the north Atlantic. In most samples prevalence varied only slightly from area to area.The mean numbers of larvae in the body cavity and on associated organs of salmon in samples from North America were significantly different between samples. Comparisons of the mean numbers of larvae with several known variables in the data were, therefore, considered: host's sex, host's sea-age, geographic locality, year and season of capture.There was evidence that the mean number of larvae per host was greater in salmon from Europe than in those from North America, but the data could not be used to providereliable estimates of the mean numbers of larvae from each area because of heterogeneity within areas. Thus the data from west Greenland and from continental home waters could net be used in calculations to determine the percentage composition of North American and European salmon in the Greenland fishery although they supported earlier findings of mixing of salmon stocks off west Greenland.The use of parasitological data in the identification of different Atlantic salmon stocks is discussed.  相似文献

1. Over 140 000 larvae of the case-building caddisfly Gumaga nigricula were self-marked as they incorporated glitter into small portions of their cases while reared in streamside troughs. These marked individuals were released into stream pools and their movements monitored in the dry season, when base flow was low and no spates occurred, and in the wet season when base flow was high and several spates occurred. 2. Of the 9,000–10 000 larvae released in each of two stream pools in the dry season, 4–20% (i.e. 377–1817 marked individuals) were observed on three sampling dates (4, 11 and 24 d after release). Most larvae (87–93%) remained within 4 m up- or downstream of the release line after 24 d. No larvae were found outside of the release pools, even after 37 d. 3. Of the > 120 000 larvae released in one stream pool near the beginning of the wet season, 408 larvae were recaptured 130–167 d later, a period that included 30 days of high flow associated with six spates. Estimated survivorship over this period was 0.7–6.2%; there was no relationship between survival and larval size at release. Most (75%) recaptured larvae were found in the pool where they were originally released. The remaining larvae were found downstream of the release pool. Larvae had generally dispersed only a short distance downstream of the release pool (median = 18 m, maximum = 222 m). In addition, four marked pupae were later found 436 m downstream of the release pool. 4. These results illustrate the sedentary nature of larval G. nigricula as well as the important role that high flow events play in larval mortality and dispersal. These case-building larvae move very little during low flow periods, even when food resources appear limiting. In contrast, the frequency and distance of larval dispersal are much greater during periods with high flow. 5. Our observations for G. nigricula support previously published inferences that larval dispersal within a stream can be limited for some aquatic insects. However, our observations also suggest that, even for a relatively sedentary species like G. nigricula, larval dispersal during periods with high flow may contribute significantly to gene flow within a stream reach.  相似文献

  • 1 Unlike most parasitoids, tachinid flies of the tribe Ormiini use sound to locate their hosts. Although thought to exert selection pressure on their host's calling behaviour, little is known about the biology of ormiines. Accordingly, this study reports the biology and impact of the ormiine Hornotrixa sp. upon calling males of the univoltine bushcricket Sciarasaga quadrata Rentz in south-western Australia.
  • 2 Populations of adult S.quadrata were monitored in the field over two successive calling seasons. Females, which do not call, were not parasitized by Hornotrixa sp., but the risk of parasitism for males increased as the 3-month calling season progressed. Parasitism did not commence until c. 2 weeks into the calling season, but by the end of the season up to 87% of surviving males were parasitized.
  • 3 Parasitized males lived for 14 days and were found singing until their penultimate evening before death in the field. Unparasitized males lived on average 69 days and a maximum of 119 days.
  • 4 Multiparasitism of hosts was common, with up to sixteen fly larvae found within parasitized males. The number of fly larvae within hosts significantly increased at the end of the season. However, successful emergence of fly larvae from hosts, as well as pupal size, significantly decreased as more than one fly larva developed within the host.
  • 5 Hornotrixa sp. has a long pupal duration of 30–31 days at 20°C. As a consequence, only one complete fly generation, which overwinters in the pupal stage, is likely within each host generation.
  • 6 No evidence for differential (size-bias) mortality by Hornotrixa sp. on male S.quadrata was found. The size of parasitized and unparasitized males collected in the field was not significantly different.
  • 7 It is concluded that Hornotrixa sp. is a significant mortality factor acting on the survival of adult male S.quadrata.

Summary Weekly zooplankton samples were taken during the period February, 1972 to January, 1973 at station III in a shallow and turbulent tropical reservoir (Broa Reservoir, São Carlos, São Paulo, State-Brazil). The samples were taken by plankton standard net with 68 mesh size, and collected through the horizontal hawls during 3 min. Rotifera was the most abundant group with 77.6%; Cladocera 13.6%, and Copepoda 8.7% (adult and naupliae stages). Other forms like Chaoborus larvae and some worms occurred sporadically. The seasonal fluctuation of the total zooplankton was very irregular in warm and rainy season and more stable in the dry and cold season. The composition of the zooplankton and its patterns of seasonal variation for eutrophic and oligotrophic aquatic ecosystems, in tropical regions, may differ significantly from temperate waters.  相似文献

Feces of wild chimpanzees in the Mahale Mountains, Tanzania, were inspected for intestinal parasites under a compound microscope. Eggs or larvae ofOesophagostomum, Strongyloides, Trichuris, Prosthenorchis, andBertiella were found. Intestinal nematodes significantly increased in the mid-rainy season. This finding supports (or, at least, is not in conflict with) the hypothesis thatAspilia leaves which are occasionally swallowed by chimpanzees may function as a vermicide, since ingestion of such leaves also increases significantly in the mid-rainy season.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to demonstrate the occurrence of entomopathogenic fungi on Ixodes ricinus ticks in relation to the tick stage, engorgement and season. Ticks were collected from the vegetation, from small rodents and from deer. All entomopathogenic fungi found belonged to the Hyphomycetes. Paecilomyces farinosus and Verticillium lecanii were the predominant species. Other species, found only on engorged females were: Beauveria bassiana, B. brongniartii, P. fumosoroseus and V. aranearum. Eight out of 1833 ticks collected from the vegetation and three out of 269 engorged nymphs were infected with fungi. Thirty-three out of 149 engorged females were infected, whereas males and engorged larvae were not infected. Throughout the season, a significantly higher proportion of ticks collected in autumn were infected. Entomopathogenic fungi may have a significant impact on the size of the I. ricinus population, since females were the most frequently infected stage.  相似文献

Diatraea lineolata and Diatraea saccharalis (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) are moths with stemboring larvae that feed and develop on economically important grasses. This study investigated whether these moths have diverged from a native host plant, corn, onto introduced crop plants including sorghum, sugarcane, and rice. Diatraea larvae were collected from these four host plants throughout the year in El Salvador and were reared on artificial diet until moths or parasitoids emerged. Adult moths were subsequently identified to species. Amplified fragment length polymorphisms (AFLPs) and mitochondrial DNA cytochrome oxidase I (COI) were used to examine whether or not there was genetic divergence of D. lineolata or D. saccharalis populations on the four host plants. Percent parasitism was also determined for each moth on its host plants. D. lineolata was collected from corn in the rainy season and sorghum in the dry season. D. saccharalis was most abundant on sugarcane in the rainy season and sorghum in the dry season. The AFLP analysis found two genetically divergent populations of both D. lineolata and D. saccharalis. Both moths had high levels of parasitism on their dominant host plant in the rainy season, yet had low levels of parasitism on sorghum in the dry season. The presence of two genotypes of both Diatraea spp. on sorghum suggest that host‐associated differentiation is occurring on this novel introduced crop plant.  相似文献

The effect of rainfall pattern on tick challenge was investigated at Kyle Recreational Park, Zimbabwe, from 1991 to 1992 using drag and removal plot methods to sample environmental tick density. The abundance of adults and nymphs of the brown ear-tick Rhipicephalus appendiculatus and larvae of the bont tick Amblyomma hebraeum was positively correlated with monthly rainfall, whereas no relationship with rainfall was revealed for larval R. appendiculatus, adults of the red-legged tick R. evertsi, or larvae of the blue tick Boophilus decoloratus. A comparison between 1991 (490 mm rainfall) and the drought year of 1992 (161 mm) revealed significant differences in the abundance of R. appendiculatus, A. hebraeum, and B. decoloratus. During the wet season, R. appendiculatus adults were 2–3 time more numerous in the environment during the higher rainfall year of 1991. A. hebraeum larval abundance exhibited a similar pattern to that of R. appendiculatus adults, but B. decoloratus larvae were more abundant in the drought year of 1992 during both the wet and dry seasons. Comparable tick abundance data collected at Kyle during the above-average rainfall years of 1975–1977 (mean = 1029 mm) were compared with tick challenge during the below-average rainfall years of 1991–1992 (mean = 326 mm). In grassland sand habitat and all habitats combined R. appendiculatus adults, nymphs, and larvae were much more abundant during the high rainfall years. In contrast, larvae of B. decoloratus were more numerous during the drier years. A. hebraeum larvae were also more abundant during the drier years. The strong positive correlation of adult R. appendiculatus abundance with rainfall and the coincidence of increased adult tick challenge with increased rainfall indicates that adult R. appendiculatus tick burden on hosts would be heaviest during the wet season and high rainfall years.  相似文献

From a series of larval collections made across northern Guadalcanal during the dry season, October–November 1997, four members of the Anopheles punctulatus group of mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) were identified using PCR‐RFLP analysis. Anopheline larvae were found in 54/57 (95%) of the sites sampled, comprising An. farauti Laveran sensu stricto (32 sites), An. farauti species no. 2 (39 sites), An. farauti no. 7 (36 sites) and An. punctulatus Dönitz (10 sites). Anopheles punctulatus occurred only on the coastal plain, where it was associated with the more transient sites. Anopheles farauti sensu lato was more widespread throughout the survey region, with similar proportions of all three sibling species in both transient and permanent sites. Two members of the An. farauti complex, An. farauti s.s. and species no. 2, were found in brackish water. All breeding sites of An. punctulatus were cohabited by An. farauti s.l., sometimes by all three sibling species. Anopheles farauti s.s. was the only species collected on human bait, with a much higher biting rate early in the evening (57 bites/human/hour at 18.30–20.00 hours) than later (0.8 bites/human/hour at 21.00–24.00 hours).  相似文献

A small irrigation diversion dam near Chiloquin, Oregon, was removed and replaced with a pump station to improve fish passage for Lost River suckers (Deltistes luxatus) and shortnose suckers (Chasmistes brevirostris) entering the Sprague River on their spawning migrations. During the developmental phase of the pump station, a need was identified to better understand the larval drift characteristics of these endangered catostomids in order to reduce entrainment into the irrigation system. The spatial, seasonal, and diel distribution of drifting larvae was measured during the 2004 spawning season at two proposed sites on the Williamson River where the pump station could be located. Larval drift for both species coincided with the irrigation season making them subject to entrainment into the irrigation system. Drift occurred almost exclusively at night with larvae entering the drift at sunset and exiting the drift at sunrise. Nighttime larval densities were concentrated near the surface and at midchannel at both sites. Densities were generally greater on the side of mid-channel with greater flow. During early morning sampling we detected a general shift in larval drift from surface to subsurface drift. We also observed an increase in larval densities towards the shore opposite from the proposed pump station at the upper site whereas larval densities remained high at midchannel at the lower site. During daytime sampling, the few larvae that were collected were distributed throughout the water column at both pump sites. This study found that larvae drifting during all time periods were generally distributed further across the cross section, deeper in the water column, and closer to where the proposed water withdrawal structure would be built at the downstream site when compared to the upstream site. Recommendations were provided to locate the withdrawal facility at the upstream site and operate it in a manner such that larval entrainment would likely be minimized.  相似文献

In this study, engorged Amblyomma lepidum ticks were found to drop off in two peaks, one in the morning and one in the evening. Most larvae and females engorged during the morning hours between 06.00 h and 10.00 h with a peak around 08.00 h, whereas the majority of the nymphs dropped in the evening between 18.00 h and 24.00 h with the peak around 22.00 h. Although the effect of time on drop-off patterns of the ticks was statistically significant (p≤ 0.001), there were no significant seasonal influences. Survival of unfed stages of A. lepidum was also studied and was found to increase from larvae to adult ticks. The longest survival periods of 10, 11 and 14 weeks were recorded during the wet season for larvae, nymphs and adults, respectively. It is concluded that environmental conditions required for survival of A. lepidum are optimal only during the wet season and that during other seasons the tick depends primarily on prevailing micro-climatic conditions for its survival.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Near reef abundance and coast–offshore distribution of tuna larvae around Minicoy Island were studied based on three cruises carried out on board FORV Sagar Sampada during 2014–15. The samples were collected by oblique tows using bongo twin nets (300 micron) for three seasons (Fall inter-monsoon (FIM), Spring inter-monsoon (SIM) and Summer monsoon (SM)) in six on–offshore stations ranging from 1 to 20?km off-shore of the Minicoy. Results indicated that the tuna larvae aggregate in the near reef waters and total tuna larvae abundance (all the species combined) shows a decreasing trend towards off-shore. Tuna larvae are found to be more abundant during SM and FIM. Comparison of the species-wise variation in tuna larvae for one season (SM) indicated that the larvae of Euthunnus affinis (32.5%) dominated among the tuna species, followed by Auxis spp. (31.6%), Thunnus spp. (3.9%) and Katsuwonus pelamis (2.7%). A pattern of highest larvae abundance in the near reef areas was observed except for Thunnus larvae. GAM indicated that mean seawater temperature and mean seawater salinity are the major environmental factors that significantly influence the larvae abundance, particularly for Thunnus followed by Katsuwonus pelamis, E. affinis and Auxis spp. The study confirms that the environmental parameters show high variation between stations and among transects as a result of the complex oceanographic characteristics around the islands. Further studies with better understanding of the larvae dynamics and their association with the environmental parameters including physical processes are essential to elucidate these relationships more clearly.  相似文献
