The aims of this study were to document the mainly chemical behaviour of two linked artificial lakes used for both stormwater management and recreation in the new town of Craigavon. Further, the understanding of their behaviour should help in their management and the design of other similar lakes. The lake mean total phosphorus (73 µg P l–1), nitrate (0.50 mg N l–1) and chlorophyll a (25 µg l–1) concentrations, Secchi depth (1.2 m) and the estimated total phosphorus loading (1.98 g m–2 a–1) all classify the main lake as eutrophic. An important source of the phosphorus load on the lakes is the urban area of Craigavon (52% of the total load). The interrelationships between total phosphorus, chlorophyll a and Secchi depth in the main lake are similar to those in natural ones. In addition, the lake follows the total phosphorus load — trophic state relationships (lake total phosphorus and chlorophyll a concentrations and Secchi depth) found to apply elsewhere. These two points indicate that the artificial lakes in Craigavon behave similarly to natural ones.  相似文献

Oligochaeta of Lake Taimyr: a preliminary survey   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Tarmo Timm 《Hydrobiologia》1996,334(1-3):89-95
Lake Taimyr in Siberia is northernmost among the world's large lakes: 73°40–75°20N, 99–106°E. The lake area is up to 4650 km2 in summer, with a maximum depth of 26 m and a mean depth of only 2.8 m. The ice-free period lasts about three months. The water level sinks 5.5–6 m during winter, so that 85% of the bottom surface is frozen into ice for some time and subjected to negative temperatures, probably down to –20 °C. In artificially melted sediment samples, 75–92% of animals survived. The average summer biomass of zoobenthos is about 1 g m–2 wet weight, a half of this being formed by Oligochaeta. Altogether 76 samples with 3742 oligochaete specimens collected by V. N. Grëze in 1943–1944 were studied. At least 14 taxa of Tubificidae, Lumbriculidae, and Enchytraeidae were found in the lake, and some more enchytraeids in an adjacent river. Many immature animals could not be identified to species. Naididae were completely lacking probably due to the absence of macrovegetation. The shallow freezing zone is inhabited mostly by Alexandrovia ringulata. The profundal fauna is dominated by Lamprodrilus isoporus, Stylodrilus sp., and Isochaetides sp.  相似文献

Rotifer distribution in relation to temperature and oxygen content   总被引:8,自引:7,他引:1
Mikschi  Ernst 《Hydrobiologia》1989,186(1):209-214
Lunzer Obersee, a small lake located at an altitude of 1100 m above sea level, was investigated from July 1985 to October 1987. The rotifer community consists of 7 dominant species, 7 subdominant species and 34 species which occasionally occurred in the plankton. The dominant species show rather different demands in relation to temperature and oxygen content; e.g.: Filinia hofmanni was found at a wide range of oxygen concentrations (0.6–13.3 mg O2l–1) and low temperatures (4–6 °O, living in the upper water layers (1–7 m) during spring and in the deeper, anoxic zone in summer. In contrast, Asplanchna priodonta was found at rather high oxygen contents (> 9 mg O2 l–1), ), and showed a wide range of temperature tolerance (4–15 °C).On the basis of field data the temperature and oxygen requirements of several species are described and discussed.  相似文献

Lake Hoare (77° 38 S, 162° 53 E) is a perennially ice-covered lake at the eastern end of Taylor Valley in southern Victoria Land, Antarctica. The environment of this lake is controlled by the relatively thick ice cover (3–5 m) which eliminates wind generated currents, restricts gas exchange and sediment deposition, and reduces light penetration. The ice cover is in turn largely controlled by the extreme seasonality of Antarctica and local climate. Lake Hoare and other dry valley lakes may be sensitive indicators of short term (< 100 yr) climatic and/or anthropogenic changes in the dry valleys since the onset of intensive exploration over 30 years ago. The time constants for turnover of the water column and lake ice are 50 and 10 years, respectively. The turnover time for atmospheric gases in the lake is 30–60 years. Therefore, the lake environment responds to changes on a 10–100 year timescale. Because the ice cover has a controlling influence on the lake (e.g. light penetration, gas content of water, and sediment deposition), it is probable that small changes in ice ablation, sediment loading on the ice cover, or glacial meltwater (or groundwater) inflow will affect ice cover dynamics and will have a major impact on the lake environment and biota.  相似文献

There are over one hundred mineralized lakes in Khakasia with areas in excess of 0.01 km2 including periodically dry lakes. These saline lakes are situated within the Chebakovo-Balakhtinskaya and Yuzhno-Minusinsk depressions of the Minusinsk intermontane trough, bounded by Kuznetsk Alatau, Western and Eastern Sayan mountains. The depressions are characterised by steppe landscape, low topographic relief and an arid climate (annual rainfall ca. 300 mm y–1). The mineralisation of the various lakes ranges from some 2 to 150 g l–1. Mg++, Na+ and Ca++ cations, SO4 = and Cl anions dominate the composition of soluble salts. The degree of variation of the lakes' mineralisation increases in dry periods. The majority of lakes are associated with synclinal structures and terrigenous red-bed Upper Devonian clastic deposits which bear indicators of accumulation in an evaporite environment (the presence of gypsum layers). Some mineral lakes are situated in Carboniferous carbonate-terrigenous deposits, containing scattered pyroclastics and features of evaporite sedimentation. The high salinity of the lakes is explained (i) by the availability of readily soluble minerals in Palaeozoic strata (gypsum, anhydrite, halite and others), which may be dissolved in groundwater and transported to lake catchments, and (ii) by the high degree of surface water evaporation due to the arid climate. The mineralized waters of some lakes can be recommended for balneological purposes. A deterioration is noted in the ecological status of some saline lakes due to anthropogenic contamination.  相似文献

The under-ice habitat and fauna were studied during a typical winter situation at three stations in the western Barents Sea. Dense pack ice (7–10/10) prevailed and ice thickness ranged over <0.1–1.6 m covered by <0.1–0.6 m of snow. Air temperatures ranged between –1.8 and –27.5°C. The ice undersides were level, white and smooth. Temperature and salinity profiles in the under-ice water (0–5 m depth) were not stratified (T=–1.9 to –2.0°C and S=34.2–34.7). Concentrations of inorganic nutrients were high and concentrations of algal pigments were very low (0.02 g chlorophyll a l–1), indicating the state of biological winter. Contents of particulate organic carbon and nitrogen ranged over 84.2–241.3 and 5.3–16.4 g l–1, respectively, the C/N ratio over 11.2–15.5 pointing to the dominance of detritus in the under-ice water. Abundances of amphipods at the ice underside were lower than in other seasons: 0–1.8 ind. m–2 for Apherusa glacialis, 0–0.7 ind. m–2 for Onisimus spp., and 0–0.8 ind. m–2 for Gammarus wilkitzkii. A total of 22 metazoan taxa were found in the under-ice water, with copepods as the most diverse and numerous group. Total abundances ranged over 181–2,487 ind. m–3 (biomass: 70–2,439 g C m–3), showing lower values than in spring, summer and autumn. The dominant species was the calanoid copepod Pseudocalanus minutus (34–1,485 ind. m–3), contributing 19–65% to total abundances, followed by copepod nauplii (85–548 ind. m–3) and the cyclopoid copepod Oithona similis (44–262 ind. m–3). Sympagic (ice-associated) organisms occurred only rarely in the under-ice water layer.  相似文献

Deep Lake, a hypersaline lake of about ten times seawater concentration, rarely freezes and is characterized by a monomictic thermal cycle, Winter circulation, at c. –17 °C, lasts for two to three months. In summer, epilimnetic temperatures from 7–11 °C result in large vertical thermal gradients (21–26 °C) which combine with the enhanced rate of density change per degree Celsius, accompanying such high salt concentration, to produce a particularly stable density configuration in Deep Lake (Schmidt stability c. 8000 g-cm cm–2; 0.785 J cm–2). The Birgean annual heat budget (c. 24500 cal cm–2; 102.7 103 J cm–2) is comparable to that of a temperate lake with a similar mean depth, despite the comparatively high ratio of Birgean wind work to annual heat budget (0.37 g-cm cal–1). Deep lake retains c. 50% of the incident solar radiation during the short summer heating period; within the range estimated for first class lakes in North America. Extended daylight hours certainly contribute to the high maximum rate of heating in the lake (444 cal cm–2 day–1; 1.86 103 J cm–2 day–1). Deep Lake cools at a rate less than half its average heating rate. Partitioning the total stability into thermal and saline components shows that salinity can contribute up to c. 20% of the maximum summer Schmidt stability. In early summer, the effect of small melt-streams is to increase stability by diluting the epilimnion. In autumn, evaporative water loss can overtake this effect, creating small de-stabilizing salinity gradients. The usually short-term stabilizing influence of snowfall and drift is less predictable, but is probably more common in winter when strong winds are most frequent.Hypersalinity has a profound effect on the physical cycle of Deep Lake, through freezing point depression and the increased rate of density change with temperature. These changes affect the lake's biota, both in relation to osmotic stress, and by effectively exposing them to a more thermally extreme environment. A comparison between Deep Lake and a smaller lake of similar salinity (Lake Hunazoko, Skarvs Nes), demonstrates that it is inappropriate to consider the biological effects of salinity in isolation. The smaller lake offers warmer epilimnetic conditions for at least part of the summer, which may explain the much greater limnetic algal production in Lake Hunazoko.  相似文献

Phytoplankton dynamics in a deep, tropical, hyposaline lake   总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0
The annual variation of the phytoplankton assemblage of deep (64.6 m), hyposaline (8.5 g l–1) Lake Alchichica, central Mexico (19 ° N, 97° W), was analyzed in relation to thermal regime, and nutrients concentrations. Lake Alchichica is warm monomictic with a 3-month circulation period during the dry, cold season. During the stratified period in the warm, wet season, the hypolimnion became anoxic. N–NH3 ranged between non detectable (n.d.) and 0.98 mg l–1, N–NO2 between n.d. and 0.007 mg l–1, N–NO3 from 0.1 to 1.0 mg l–1 and P–PO4 from n.d. to 0.54 mg l–1. Highest nutrient concentrations were found in the circulation period. Chlorophyll a varied from <1 to 19.8 g l–1 but most values were <5 g l–1. The euphotic zone (>1% PAR) usually comprised the top 15–20 m. Nineteen algae species were identified, most of them are typical inhabitants of salt lakes. Diatoms showed the highest species number (10) but the small chlorophyte Monoraphidium minutum, the single-cell cyanobacteria, Synechocystis aquatilis, and the colonial chlorophyte, Oocystis parva, were the numerical dominant species over the annual cycle. Chlorophytes, small cyanobacteria and diatoms dominated in the circulation period producing a bloom comparable to the spring bloom in temperate lakes. At the end of the circulation and at the beginning of stratification periods, the presence of a bloom of the nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria, N. spumigena, indicated nitrogen-deficit conditions. The well-stratified season was characterized by low epilimnetic nutrients levels and the dominance of small single-cell cyanobacteria and colonial chlorophytes. Phytoplankton dynamics in tropical Lake Alchichica is similar to the pattern observed in some deep, hyposaline, North American temperate lakes.  相似文献

Hydrology and water balance of Lake Peipsi   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Ago Jaani 《Hydrobiologia》1996,338(1-3):11-23
Lake Peipsi is a large (3558 km2) but shallow (up to 15.3 m deep) tripartite waterbody hydrologically investigated already since the 19th century. Surface discharge by rivers accounts for more than 80% of its water balance. The residental time of water is about two years in the whole lake but several times less in its shallower southern parts receiving the biggest rivers. The annual water regime is characterized by the highest water in spring, the average amplitude of yearly level fluctuations being 1.15 m. There are known long-term hydrological cycles of 80–90, about 22, 9–11, and even fewer years. Several temporary wind-dependent circular currents exist in the subsurface layers. Alternating transitional currents occur in the narrowest part of the lake. Five different periods are distinguishable in the annual thermic cycle. The duration of the stable ice cover is up to five months (December-April) in the shallower parts but a shorter time in the centre of the lake. The maximum surface temperature in July usually reaches 21–22°C in the open regions but considerably higher (up to 27–28°C in some years) on shallows. The unstable summer stratification is often disturbed by waves and currents. Biological summer, with surface temperatures over 10°C, lasts on an average 134 days.  相似文献

The Salton Sea is a shallow (mean depth = 8 m; maximum depth = 15 m), saline (41–45 g l–1), intermittently mixing, 57 km long, 980 km2 lake located in the arid southwestern United States. The Sea is a wind driven system, with predominant winds paralleling the long axis of the lake, being strongest in spring and weakest in summer and fall. The Sea mixed daily or nearly daily between September and January. During this cooling period, moderate to high levels of dissolved oxygen (3–11 mg l–1) were found throughout the water column. Mean water column temperature ranged from a minimum of 13–14 °C in early January to a maximum of 30–34 °C in July–September. During most of this warming period, the Sea was thermally stratified but subject to periodic wind driven mixing events. Winds were stronger in spring 1998 than in 1997 or 1999, causing more rapid heating of the lake that year and also delaying onset of anoxic conditions in bottom waters. During summer months, mid-lake surface waters were sometimes supersatured with oxygen, and bottom waters were hypoxic or anoxic with sulfide concentrations > 5 mg l–1. Oxic conditions (> 1 mg O2 l–1) often extended a few meters deeper nearshore than they did well offshore as a consequence of greater mixing nearshore. Mixing events in late summer deoxygenated the entire water column for a period of days. Consumption of oxygen by sulfide oxidation likely was the principal mechanism for these deoxygenation events. Sulfide concentrations in surface waters were 0.5–1 mg l–1 approximately 3 days after one mixing event in mid-August 1999. These mixing events were associated with population crashes of phytoplankters and zooplankters and with large fish kills. In the southern basin, freshwater inflows tended to move out over the surface of the Sea mixing with saline lake water as a function of wind conditions. Salinity gradients often contributed more to water column stability than did thermal gradients in the southeasternmost portion of the lake.  相似文献

Factors influencing the species composition, distribution and abundance of benthic invertebrates were determined in a eutrophic subarctic lake from April 1978 to April 1979. Collections were made at five stations located at depths of 4 to 13 m. The largest populations of up to 5 × 103 animals m–2 were found in the deepest part of the lake. of the 24 species recorded in this area, the chironomidsProcladius denticulatus, Dicrotendipes modestus, Chironomus decorus andGlyptotendipes barbipes were most common. The strong development of benthos in the profundal zone was attributed to a consistently large supply of food and warm (4 °C) winter temperatures on bottom. Slightly smaller populations (up to 4 × 103 animals, m–2), composed of 19–23 species, occurred in shallower water, a reflection of lower (1.5 °C) winter temperatures. In the anoxic northern part of the lake, only 4–8 species were found in low numbers (400–1 000 animals m–2). This was likely due to low (<5% saturation) oxygen levels in water and high organic content (18.5%) of the sediments.  相似文献

Spruce-fir forests extend along the Appalachian Mountains of eastern North America from 35° to 49° N. This montane vegetation differs from boreal spruce-fir forest in that it is dominated by Picea rubens, has a higher vascular species richness, has wind, rather than fire, dominated dynamics, and has a mean annual temperature above 2 °C. Using field reconnaissance, remote sensing, and literature review we described and modeled the latitude-elevation relationship for Appalachian spruce-fir. The elevation of the sprucefir/deciduous forest ecotone decreases from 1,680 m at 35° N to 150 m at 49° N, while the elevation of treeline (spruce-fir/tundra ecotone) decreases from 1,480 m at 44° N to 550 m at 55° N. Linear regressions gave latitude-elevation relationships of –100 m/lo Latitude for the spruce-fir/deciduous forest ecotone and –83 m/lo Latitude for treeline. These values compare to literature reports of –54 to –230 m/lo Latitude and are most similar to values reported from eastern Asia. The latitude-elevation relationship for eman July temperature ( –94 to –121 m/lo Latitude) was more similar to the slopes of these ecotones than is the slope for mean annual temperature ( –170 to –220 m/lo Latitude). The spruce-fir/deciduous forest ecotone was correlated with a mean July temperature of approximately 17 °C. Treeline was correlated with a mean July temperature of approximately 13 °C.  相似文献

The Pretoria Salt Pan, South Africa, a small (0.076 km2), shallow (Zmax = 2.85 m), hypersaline, maar lake, lies within a clearly-defined crater and is fed by a perennial, slightly saline (3 g l-1) artesian spring. The lake has two distinct solar-heated peaks in its temperature profile, each of these peaks located in a highly turbid (>80 JTU) layer below a steep chemocline. The upper thermal peak, located at a depth of 10 cm, was transient, with a distinct diel pattern of diurnal heating and nocturnal cooling. The lower thermal peak, located below a steep chemocline and centred at approximately 60 cm, was stable and showed a seasonal pattern of winter heating (maximum: 38.5°C) and summer cooling (minimum: 27.4°C). The unusual bathymetry of the lake, combined with the sheltering effect of the crater rim and steep salinity gradient between the surface (30–80 g l-1) and bottom water (280–310 g l-1) prevented windmixing of surface waters beyond a depth of approximately 50 cm. During a 28 month study all water deeper than 55 cm remained anaerobic, and the lake appeared to be meromictic.  相似文献

Seasonal fluctuation in river stage strongly affects the ecological functioning of tropical floodplain lakes. This study was conducted to assess the influence of hydrological seasonality on bacterial production and abundance in two floodplain lakes of the Autana River, a blackwater river in the Middle Orinoco basin, Venezuela. Water samples for nutrient chemistry, chlorophyll a, and microbiological determinations were collected in two floodplain lakes and in the mainstem of the river during 1997–98. DOC and chlorophyll a concentrations were similar between mainstem and lake sites during high water when river and lakes were well connected but became different during the period of low water when the interaction was minimal. Higher values of bacterial production were observed in the floodplain lakes (0.62–1.03 g C l–1 h–1) compared to the mainstem sites (0.17–0.19 g C l–1 h–1) during the period of low water, while during the period of high water river and lake sites showed similar levels (0.04 g C l–1 h–1). Bacterial numbers followed bacterial production in the floodplain lakes, reaching higher numbers during the period of low water (1.41–2.40 × 106 cells ml–1). Availability of substrate and inorganic nutrients, pH, and inputs and losses of bacterial cells could be determining the observed seasonal patterns in bacterial production and abundance. The Autana lakes exhibited a strong seasonal pattern in the chemical and biological conditions, showing higher productivity during the lentic phase that lasted between 5 and 6 months.  相似文献

A survey of 11 sites covering three large (>10 km long, 6 sites) playa lakes and four pans (<1 km2, 5 sites) of the Yarra Yarra salt lake system in the Northern Agricultural Region of Western Australia commenced in 2001. These salt lakes are shallow and ephemeral, with inundation being more regular following winter rainfall, but summer inundation also occurred in 2001. Salinity was generally higher in playas (156–368 g l−1) than pans (30–284 g l−1), but salinity responded noticeably to heavy rainfall events, especially in pans. pH values in the playa lakes (6.68–7.82) were less variable than in the pans (6.81–8.08). The range of dissolved oxygen concentrations was greater in pans (3.7–14.4 mg l−1) than in playas (3.9–8.2 mg l−1). Cationic concentrations generally followed the pattern of sea water cation dominance. Benthic microbial communities comprised either cohesive to loosely mucilaginous mats, or thin films of diatoms. Five genera of diatom and two species of filamentous cyanobacteria were recorded. Guest Editor: John M. Melack Saline Waters and their Biota  相似文献

Walker Lake is a monomictic, nitrogen-limited, terminal lake located in western Nevada. It is one of only eight large (Area>100 km2, Z { mean}>15 m) saline lakes of moderate salinity (3–20 g l–1) worldwide, and one of the few to support an endemic trout fishery (Oncorhynchus clarki henshawi). As a result of anthropogenic desiccation, between 1882 and 1996 the lake's volume has dropped from 11.1 to 2.7 km3 and salinity has increased from 2.6 to 12–13 g l–1. This study, conducted between 1992 and 1998, examined the effects of desiccation on the limnology of the lake. Increases in salinity over the past two decades caused the extinction of two zooplankton species, Ceriodaphnia quadrangula and Acanthocyclops vernalis. Recent increases in salinity have not negatively affected the lake's dominant phytoplankton species, the filamentous blue-green algae Nodularia spumigena. In 1994 high salinity levels (14–15 g l–1) caused a decrease in tui chub minnow populations, the main source of food for Lahontan cutthroat trout, and a subsequent decrease in the health of stocked trout. Lake shrinkage has resulted in hypolimnetic anoxia and hypolimnetic accumulation of ammonia (800–2000 g-N l–1) and sulfide (15 mg l–1) to levels toxic to trout. Internal loading of ammonia via hypolimnetic entrainment during summer wind mixing (170 Mg-N during a single event), vertical diffusion (225–500 Mg-N year–1), and fall destratification (540–740 Mg-N year–1) exceeds external nitrogen loading (<25 Mg-N year–1). Increasing salinity in combination with factors related to hypolimnetic anoxia have stressed trout populations and caused a decline in trout size and longevity. If desiccation continues unabated, the lake will be too saline (>15–16 g l–1) to support trout and chub fisheries in 20 years, and in 50–60 years the lake will reach hydrologic equilibrium at a volume of 1.0 km3 and a salinity of 34 g l–1.  相似文献

The life history and production characteristics of Neomysis mercedis from two British Columbia lakes were examined for their potential influence on zooplankton and limnetic fish communities. During the day, mysids in shallow Muriel Lake (45 m) were on or near the bottom; in Kennedy Lake (> 100 m), mysids remained deeper than 50 m. In both lakes, mysids spent summer nights at 0–15 m depths despite > 20 °C temperatures. Mysid density was not strongly correlated with lake depth. Mysids generally displayed spring to early summer minima and late summer to fall maxima in numbers and biomass. Single peaks in gravid females and juvenile mysid abundance, and the absence of pronounced seasonal size changes of gravid females suggest that N. mercedis produced a single generation each year. Fecundities of study lake mysids are the lowest on record, and although size-dependent, exhibited unusually high variability. Annual productivity of mysids averaged 485 mg m–2 y–1 (range 205–690). Calculations indicate mysids consume several times more zooplankton per annum than limnetic fish do. N. mercedis is likely an important competitor of juvenile sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) since: (i) sockeye exhibit food limited growth and survival patterns in coastal lakes, (ii) mysids and sockeye consume similar zooplankton prey and (iii) mysids do not contribute greatly to sockeye diet (i.e. < 26% of summer and fall diets by numbers or weight).  相似文献

The winter dynamics of several chemical, physical, and biological variables of a shallow, polymictic lake (Opinicon) are compared to those of a deep, nearby dimictic lake (Upper Rock) during ice cover (January to early April) in 1990 and 1991. Both lakes were weakly inversely thermally stratified. Dissolved oxygen concentration was at saturation (11–15 mg l−1) in the top 3 m layer, but declined to near anoxic levels near the sediments. Dissolved oxygen concentrations in the deep lake were at saturation in most of the water column and approached anoxic levels near the sediments only. Nutrient concentrations in both lakes were fairly high, and similar in both lakes during ice cover. Total phosphorus concentrations generally ranged between 10–20 μg l−1, NH4-N between 16–100 μg l−1, and DSi between 0.9–1.9 mg l−1; these concentrations fell within summer ranges. NO3-N concentrations were between 51–135 μg l−1 during ice cover, but occurred at trace concentrations (<0.002 μg l−1) during the summer. The winter phytoplankton community of both lakes was dominated by flagellates (cryptophytes, chrysophytes) and occasionally diatoms. Dinoflagellates, Cyanobacteria and green algae were poorly represented. Cryptophytes often occurred in fairly high proportions (20–80%) throughout the water column, whereas chrysophytes were more abundant just beneath the ice. Zooplankton population densities were extremely low during ice cover (compared to maximum densities measured in spring or summer) in both lakes, and were comprised largely of copepods.  相似文献

The Larsemann Hills are a series of rocky peninsulas and islands in Prydz Bay at 69° 24 S and 76° 20 E. There is about 2000 km2 of ice free land with well over 150 freshwater lakes spread evenly over the granite and gneiss hills. The nearshore islands were ice free by 9500 BP, while the present coastline was exposed by 4500 BP. A relatively steady rate of ice retreat is indicated, around 0.3 ma–1. The two freshwater lakes studied so far have evolved from oligotrophic, proglacial lagoons to fresh or brackish lakes affected by periodic influxes of salt water from sea spray and surges produced by glacial calving. The diatom assemblages increase in species diversity following marine incursion or influence. The major changes are therefore due to the postglacial recovery of sea level, rather than any intrinsic chemical evolution of the lake waters.  相似文献

Sub-arctic Lake Myvatn is one of the most productive lakes in the Northern Hemisphere, despite an ice cover of 190 days per year. In situ, transparent and dark flux chambers were used for direct measurements of benthic fluxes of dissolved oxygen, nutrients, silica and certain metals, taking into account primary production and mineral precipitation. The range of benthic flux observed for dissolved oxygen (DO), dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), ammonium, ortho-P, silica, calcium, and magnesium was –45.89 to 187.03, –99.32 to 50.96, –1.30 to 1.27, –0.51 to 0.39, –62.3 to 9.3, –33.82 to 16.83, and –23.93 to 7.52 mmol m–2 d–1, respectively (negative value indicating flux towards the lake bottom). Low benthic NH4 + and ortho-P fluxes were likely related to benthic algal production, and aerobic bottom water. Ortho-P fluxes could also be controlled by the dissolution/precipitation of ferrihydrite, calcite, and perhaps hydroxyapatite. The negative silica fluxes were caused by diatom frustule synthesis. Benthic calcium and magnesium fluxes could be related to algal production and dissolution/precipitation of calcium and/or Ca,Mg-carbonates. Fluxes of DO, DIC, pH and alkalinity were related to benthic biological processes. It is likely that some of the carbon precipitates as calcite at the high pH in the summer and dissolves at neutral pH in the winter. Mean of the ratio of gross benthic DIC consumption and gross benthic DO production was 0.94 ± 0.18, consistent with algal production using NH4 + as N source. During the summer weeks the water column pH remains above 10. This high pH is caused by direct and indirect utilisation of CO2, HCO3 , CO3 –2, H4SiO4 ° and H3SiO4 by primary producers. This study shows that in shallow lakes at high latitudes, where summer days are long and the primary production is mostly by diatoms, the pH is forced to very high values. The high pH could lead to a positive feedback for the Si flux, but negative feedback for the NH4 + flux.  相似文献
