This study was performed to observe the susceptibility of dogs and cats as definitive hosts of Paragonimus iloktsuenensis. The metacercariae of this fluke were obtained from Sesarma dehaani collected at a focus near the mouth of Sumjin river in November, 1986 and February, 1987. The larvae isolated from the crabs were introduced per os into 7 albino rats, 2 dogs and 3 cats. The adults were recovered from the experimental animals, and they were morphologically observed and measured. The results were as follows: 1. The recovery rate of adult worms at 42 days after infection was 53.3% from three albino rats, 21.0% from a dog and 12.7% from two cats. Most of the worms were recovered from the worm capsules in the lungs. 2. The size of worms recovered from albino rats, a dog, and cats 42 days after infection averaged 6.3 x 3.2 mm, 6.3 x 3.0 mm, or 6.2 x 3.5 mm, respectively. There were little differences in the morphology of worms by different experimental animals. 3. The size of eggs from a dog was 88.9 x 49.3 microns, and that from cats was 84.3 x 53.7 microns on average. Dogs and cats were good definitive hosts of P. iloktsuenensis. This fact suggests that human infection by this fluke may be possible if the metacercariae were ingested.  相似文献

Ascaris suum eggs were collected from pig faeces or dissected from worms obtained from the same pigs. Eggs from the two sources were allowed to embryonate in 0.1 N H2SO4, in 1 % buffered formalin or in tap water. The embryonation of the sulphuric acid and water cultures occurred at the same speed, while the formalin cultures developed slightly more slowly. By experimental inoculation of helminthfree pigs and subsequent counting of white spots in the livers and larvae in the lungs day 7 p. i., the infectivity of eggs dissected from worm uteri and embryonated in sulphuric acid (a normal laboratory procedure) was compared with that of eggs collected from faeces and embryonated in water (i.e. more naturally developed eggs). The results suggest that the two types of eggs were equally infective. For this reason the common practice of using Ascaris eggs dissected from worms for experimental infections might be acceptable.  相似文献

Observations are reported on the size and age structure of Stronglyus vulgaris populations recovered from the anterior mesenteric artery and its main branches of horses slaughtered at regular intervals throughout a year. Marked seasonal variations were found in the mean monthly numbers of worms present. During spring/early summer the numbers were relatively low and a large proportion of the arteries had no worms in them at all. Thereafter, the arterial worm burdens quite rapidly increased and the highest levels were reached during the winter months. During summer, small, newly-arrived larvae were quite abundant but by the end of the year well-developed (fifth-stage and late fourth-stage) worms predominated. These observations support the view that S. vulgaris is in Britain an annual species completing its development mainly during the winter months of the year.  相似文献

In a small isolated lake in Slovakia, the fish acanthocephalan Pomphorhynchus laevis using Gammarus balcanicus and the minnow Phoxinus phoxinus, respectively, as its intermediate and final hosts, represented a dominant helminth species. Its prevalence and intensity of infection in fish showed no significant variation during a year fluctuating above the mean values of 89% and 6.6 worms per fish. The mean prevalence of P. laevis larvae in Gammarus was 41.4% with a maximum in the late summer and autumn; individual crustaceans were infected by 1-9 larvae. There was one generation of P. laevis per year. Following up an annual cycle, an occurrence of new infections of Gammarus culminated in October and in the next May for Phoxinus. The sex ratios of both the adults and larvae of acanthocephalans were near unity but favoured slightly males in spring and autumn. The distribution of P. laevis in minnows and crustaceans was highly aggregated and fitted with the negative binomial model. The spatial distribution analysis of parasites along the fish alimentary tract showed a clear preference of P. laevis for its proximal half, with the maximum numbers in the site of the first intestinal loop. Immature worms of both sexes predominated in the proximal region and moved slightly down the alimentary tract during their growth and maturation.  相似文献

The effect of flubendazole orally administered at 10 mg/kg/day for 5 consecutive days (the 11th, 20th or 40th post-infection) on the number of first-stage larvae (L1) of Angiostrongylus cantonensis released in the faeces of rats each infected with 40 third-stage larvae was determined. Faecal examination for 5 months, the period from medication to dissection of rats, showed that L1 release ceased in all the rats of medicated groups by about 1 week after the termination of dosing and resumed 1-2 months later in 86% of the rats which were dissected at the end of experiments with the recovery of adult worms of both sexes. Throughout the period of 5 months, about 2-4 x 10(4) L1/gram of fresh faeces was recorded in non-medicated control groups. There was a 38-79% reduction in adult worms at the dissection. Microscopic examination of the uteri of the remaining adult worms and lung tissues of rats confirmed no normal egg production in the adult worms from rats of medicated groups, except the rats with the resumption of faecal L1 release.  相似文献

Previous indications using radiolabelled larvae that Strongyloides ratti free-living infective larvae lose a surface coat during penetration of the skin were further investigated by transmission electron microscopy of the cuticle of S. ratti infective larvae in the free-living stage, after penetration of mouse skin, and after migration to the lungs. These studies demonstrated the presence of a faint electron-dense surface coat external to the epicuticle on free-living worms which was absent from larvae recovered from the skin and lungs. When free-living infective larvae were incubated in 10% CO2 at 37 C and then examined with phase-contrast microscopy, worms were observed in the process of losing this coat. These observations confirm the hypothesis that S. ratti infective larvae lose a surface coat during penetration of the skin.  相似文献

The laboratory study of dracunculiasis has suffered from the lack of a suitable, readily available animal model. We have been able to experimentally infect ferrets. Mustela putorius furo, with the North American dracunculid, Dracunculus insignis. Ferrets were inoculated with 75 to 100 infective larvae and were necropsied 90 to 240 days later. Guinea worms were recovered from 10 (56%) of 18 ferrets. A total of 44 worms were recovered, for an average of 4.4 worms per infected ferret. Gravid female worms were recovered as early as 128 days postinoculation. Thirteen (87%) of 15 gravid female worms were recovered from the extremities. Living male worms were recovered at 200 days of age, indicating that not all male worms die shortly after mating. First-stage larvae recovered from gravid females as early as 200 days of age were found to be infective to the copepod, Acanthocyclops vernalis. These observations suggest that the ferret is an excellent laboratory animal for dracunculiasis research.  相似文献

To determine the role of interleukin-5 (IL-5) and eosinophils in protection against Strongyloides ratti, mice treated with anti-IL-5 monoclonal antibody (mAb) were infected with S. ratti larvae. Strongyloides ratti egg numbers in faeces (EPG) in mAb treated mice were higher than those in control mice on days 6 and 7 after inoculation. The numbers of migrating worms in mAb treated mice 36 h after inoculation were higher than those observed in control mice. Intestinal worm numbers in mAb treated mice 5 days after inoculation were higher than those in control mice. These results show that eosinophils effectively protected the host against S. ratti infection by mainly the larval stage in primary infections. The involvement of eosinophils in protection against secondary infection was also examined. Before secondary infection, mice were treated with anti-IL-5 mAb and infected with S. ratti. Patent infections were not observed in either mAb treated or control Ab treated mice. The numbers of migrating worms in the head and lungs of mAb treated mice increased to 60% of that in primary infected mice. Intestinal worms were not found in mAb treated mice or in control mice after oral implantation of adult worms. Eosinophils were therefore mainly involved in protection against tissue migrating worms in secondary infections.  相似文献

During one year 1249 male cattle were examined for Mammomonogamus laryngeus infections in the slaughterhouse at Kandy, Sri Lanka. The overall prevalence was 40% with only light monthly variations (34 to 52%). The infection rate was highest (47%) in 2 to 2.5 year old animals. In infected animals an average of 6.4 parasite pairs was found with higher numbers in older animals. The majority of worms were located on the posterior side of the epiglottis. Lesions observed were mucosal plugs at the site where the parasites were attached to the mucosa and moderate to severe erosions and ulcers in other zones.  相似文献

Four Presbytis cristata were treated with oral ivermectin at the same time as the subcutaneous inoculation of 100 infective larvae monthly for three months. Two animals given 0.2 mg/kg monthly and two others given 0.3 mg/kg monthly as well as three control animals became patent for microfilaraemia. However, only 1% of the infective dose was recovered as adult worms from animals in the higher drug dosage group compared to 8.2% and 6.2% in the lower dosage and control groups respectively.  相似文献

An attempt was made to identify the human hookworm involved in failed-treatment cases using abnormal hosts and scanning electron microscopy. Thirty-seven, 2 to 6 month old Chinese hamsters (Cricetulus griseus) from a closed, outbred, conventional colony, were each given between 20 and 120 filariform larvae per os. The larvae were cultured from faeces from mebendazole (Vermox) 500 mg single-dose, failed-treatment cases living in the lowveld farming area of the Transvaal Province, South Africa. About 60 to 78 days after inoculation, the animals were killed and adult worms were removed from their small intestines. Eleven (30%) of the 37 hamsters harboured a total of 31 adult worms (19 males and 12 females), while 26 hamsters were refractory to infection. The greatest number of worms recovered from a single animal was six. A total of 27 worms (17 males and 10 females) were subjected to examination by scanning electron microscopy. Micrographs showed male and female worms to be morphologically all of the Necator americanus species, as identified by a pair of ventral and dorsal cutting plates, a dorsal tooth and the fused terminus of spicules in the male bursa. The transverse cuticular striations were distinct and smooth. Several points of interest arose from the results of this study and are discussed.  相似文献

The possible role of the cockroach Periplaneta americana in the transmission of Toxocara canis eggs and larvae via faeces and tissue migration was studied. Cockroaches fed with 3 x 105 and 5 x 105 embryonated eggs were found to harbour viable eggs and larvae from days 1 to 5 post-infection (DPI). At necropsy on 5 DPI, eggs and larvae were also recovered from the rectal contents but not from the tissues of cockroaches. In addition patent infections were established in pups fed on infected faeces of cockroaches, with eggs first appearing in the faeces of pups at 38 DPI. Adult worms of T. canis were also recovered at necropsy. Therefore the importance of cockroaches as good mechanical disseminators of ascarid eggs, especially T. canis, is discussed.  相似文献

The effect on the pasture contamination level with infective trichostrongylid larvae by feeding the nematode-trapping fungus, Duddingtonia flagrans at two dose levels to first time grazing calves was examined in Lithuania. Thirty heifer-calves, aged 3-6 months, were divided into three comparable groups, A, B and C. Each group was turned out on a 1.07 ha paddock (a, b and c). The paddocks were naturally contaminated with infective trichostrongylid larvae from infected cattle grazing the previous year. Fungal material was fed to the animals daily during a two month period starting 3 weeks after turnout. Groups A and B were given 10(6) and 2.5x10(5) chlamydospores per kg of live weight per day, respectively, while group C served as a non-dosed control group. Every two weeks the heifers were weighed and clinically inspected. On the same dates, faeces, blood and grass samples were collected. From mid-July onwards, the number of infective larvae in grass samples increased markedly (P<0.05)on paddock c, whereas low numbers of infective larvae were observed on paddocks a and b grazed by the fungus treated groups. However, the results indicate that administering fungal spores at a dose of 2.5x10(6)chlamydospores per kg live weight per day did not significantly prevent parasitism in calves, presumably due to insufficient suppression of developing infective larvae in the faeces. In contrast, a dose of 10(6) chlamydospores per kg lowered the parasite larval population on the pasture, reduced pepsinogen levels (P<0.05), and prevented calves from developing parasitosis.  相似文献

1. We examined selected aspects of the nutritional ecology of larval Ptychoptera paludosa and their role in nutrient cycling in the Breitenbach, a first-order stream in Hesse, Germany.
2. Food preference experiments demonstrated significant preference for sediments with a high organic matter content and live bacteria.
3. pH was circumneutral in all sections of the gut.
4. Enzymatic activity (β-glucosidase and amino-peptidase) in different parts of the gut was measured using 4-methylumbelliferyl-β- D -glucopyranoside (MUF-Glc) and leucine-4-methylcoumarinyl-7-amide (Leu-MCA). β-glucosidase activity was highest in the hindgut.
5. The mean larval gut passage time was between 7 and 8 h.
6. The egestion rate of last instar larvae was about 0.35 mg dry weight (DW) faeces per larva h–1 and about 1.25 mg ash-free dry weight (AFDW) faeces per mg larval AFDW day–1.
7. Larval faeces contained at least 4–18 times more organic matter than the average in the sediments in which they were feeding, that is, larvae fed selectively, extracting organic matter from sediments.
8. P. paludosa larvae are important in the dynamics of detritus in slow-flowing reaches of the Breitenbach. They gather organic material from the sediment to a depth of 3 cm, and release it as faeces onto the sediment surface. A total of 770 g DW faeces m–2 yr–1, comprising about 16% organic matter, was produced by the Ptychoptera population.  相似文献

The abundance, generation time and production ofChironomus salinarius larvae in a lagoon fish-pond system in the Bay of Cádiz were studied by taking monthly samples at 3 sites during 1991 and 1992. Numerical abundance and biomass of larvae showed considerable spatial, seasonal and interannual variation (ANCOVAs,P<0.001). The maximum mean annual density was 7048 larvae m–2, and corresponded to a biomass of 3.08 g dry weight (DW) m–2. It was recorded at the site with the lowest rate of water renewal. Seasonal patterns were similar at all sites, with main annual peaks of abundance and biomass in autumn-early winter. Chironomid density was positively related to the biomass of benthic macroalgae (P<0.001). The population studied was multivoltine with a probable average of five generations per year, with overlapping cohorts and a predominance of third- and fourth-instar larvae. Estimates of annual production ranged between 72.2 g DW m–2 yr–1 at the site with the lowest rate of water renewal in 1991 and 0.1 g DW m–2 yr–1 at the site with the highest rate of water renewal in 1992. Mean annual production and the production/biomass ratio for the system was estimated to be 16.8 g DW m–2 yr–1 and 12.7, respectively. Possible factors leading to the observed density fluctuations are discussed, as well as possible sources of error in production estimates.  相似文献

The heart and lungs from 32 adult dingoes (Canis familiaris dingo) were examined for canine heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) infection. Eighteen of 32 (56%) samples were infected, with intensity of infection ranging from 1 to 31 worms per animal. Seven of 18 (39%) infections were single sex infections. Large numbers of circulating microfilariae were present in blood from all dingoes infected with both sexes of worms.  相似文献

Dawkins H. J. S. and Grove D. I. 1981 Kinetics of primary and secondary infections with Strongyloides ratti in mice. International journal for Parasitology11: 89–96. The kinetics of infection with S. ratti were quantitated in normal and previously exposed C57B1 /6 mice. In primary infections, larvae penetrated the skin rapidly and were seen in peak numbers 12 h after infection. By 24 h after infection, larval numbers had declined appreciably and there was a slow decrease in numbers thereafter. Larvae were first observed in the lungs at 24 h and maximal recovery occurred at 48 h. It is thought that larval migration through the lungs is rapid. Worms were first seen in the intestines two days after infection. Maximum numbers were seen on the fifth day and worm expulsion was complete by day 10. Two moults took place in the small intestine during days 3 and 4 after infection. Rhabditiform larvae were first noted on the fourth day after infection. Mice exposed to S. ratti four weeks previously had significantly less larvae in the skin 4 and 12 h after infection but by 24 h there was no difference when compared with mice with primary infections. Peak recovery of larvae from the lungs occurred 24 h after infection; significantly less larvae were recovered on days 2 and 3 when compared with normal mice. There was a marked reduction in the adult worm burden in the gut; the number of worms recovered was less than one fifth of that seen in primary infections. Those worms which did mature were less fecund and were expelled from the intestines within 7 days of infection. It is suggested that in previously exposed animals, the migration of larvae from the skin is hastened, many of these larvae are destroyed in the lungs and that expulsion of worms which do mature in the intestines is accelerated.  相似文献

Thirteen groups of rats were first sensitized with single or double doses of 5--30 third-stage larvae of Angiostrongylus cantonensis, followed by a challenge infection with 100 larvae at various periods after the primary infection. Seven other groups of rats receiving only the sensitizing infection served as the controls. In all the sensitized rats, a significantly (p less than 0.05) smaller mean number of adult worms was found established in the challenge infection as compared to the control. The frequency of the sensitizing dose and timing of the challenge infection appeared to influence the intensity of the host's response. There was no conclusive evidence to indicate that the immune response could retard the growth, development, or sex ratios of the worms established in subsequent infections. A positive haemagglutinating antibody response was first observed in some rats as early as four weeks post-infection with 100 larvae when the worms began migrating from the brain to the lungs. The antibody response and eosinophilia were most pronounced during the oviposition of the female worms and hatching of first-stage-larvae. Changes in white blood cell, lymphocyte, and neutrophil counts were also followed in some groups.  相似文献

Twenty male hamsters were inoculated with 95 to 150 infective larvae of B. pahangi via the subcutaneous route. Worms recovered from 19 hamsters averaged 14% (0–32) from 11 hamsters killed at 105–195 days after infection and 16% (5–19) from 8 hamsters examined at 23–45 days after infection. Approximately one-half of the worms recovered were from the lymphatic vessels of the testes, epididymis, and spermatic cord. A few were found in afferent or efferent vessels of regional lymph nodes. The remaining worms were from the heart and lungs. Low-level microfilaremias were observed in 10 of 12 hamsters held for over 100 days. The average prepatent period was 89 days (65–128). Worms were recovered for up to 3 weeks following inoculation of nine hamsters via the intraperitoneal route with 100–400 infective larvae of B. pahangi.Gross lymphatic pathologic lesions consisted of moderate to marked dilation of lymphatic vessels, enlargement of regional lymph nodes, and numerous lymphthrombi and emboli. Macroscopic changes were most consistent and severe in the lymphatic vessels of the testes, epididymis, and spermatic cord and were noted less frequently in the afferent or efferent vessels of various regional lymph nodes. Areas of reddish discoloration were observed frequently on the serosal surface of the lung in infected hamsters.  相似文献

In north-central Venezuela Lutzomyia gomezi and Lu. ovallesi are the main endophilic/anthropophilic species of phlebotomine sandflies implicated as vectors of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL). Lutzomyia ovallesi has been found infected with Leishmania braziliensis (1.2%) and less often with Le. mexicana (0.07%), while Le. braziliensis infections have also been found in Lu. gomezi (0.47%). We investigated population densities of these sandflies using two sampling methods with four series of collections between January 1991 and March 1995 at El Ingenio, Miranda State. All-night outdoor collections from a Shannon trap were correlated with indoor collections from CDC light–traps by linear regression, which proved to be statistically significant for both species. Estimated numbers of female sandflies per house per night were found to be proportional to monthly precipitation (i.e. rainfall), with a lag time of seven months for Lu. ovallesi and of six months for Lu. gomezi . Predominance of Lu. ovallesi over Lu. gomezi ( c. 10 :1 ) was observed throughout the year, with the number of infected females estimated as 0.043 ± 0.047 Lu. ovallesi and 0.0085 ± 0.0124 Lu. gomezi per CDC trap per house per night (ratio ∼ 5:1). The mean rate of new CL cases per house per year and sandfly abundance were correlated by linear regression, showing a statistically significant relationship for Lu. ovallesi but not for Lu. gomezi . The negative intercept indicated that, on average, the CDC trap density exceeds 800 Lu. ovallesi females/house/year before new CL cases occur at El Ingenio.  相似文献
