Human health status in Russia has declined sharply over the last decade. The massive social changes that have taken place since the fall of the Soviet Union have resulted in increasing morbidity and mortality rates. However, relatively little information is available on the changes in health and disease patterns of Russia's many indigenous populations. The present study examines anthropometric indices of growth status of young children (< 6 years; n = 155), a sensitive index of population health, in three indigenous Evenki communities of Central Siberia between 1991 and 1995. Children of the 1995 sample are significantly shorter, lighter, and leaner than those measured in 1991 and 1992. In 1995, 61 % of Evenki children were growth stunted (heightfor-age z score < -2.0), as compared to 34% in 1991 and 1992 (p < 0.001). Similarly, the prevalence of low weight-for-age (weight-for-age z score < -2.0) children in the 1995 sample was more than double that of the 1991/92 sample (43% vs. 18%; p <0.001), and the prevalence of low weight-for-height (weight-for-height z score < -2.0; "wasting") increased from 2% to 17% (p < 0.001). The levels of growth retardation observed in 1995 are comparable to those seen among impoverished third-world populations. Additionally, the declines in linear growth appear to be particularly pronounced in girls, raising the question of whether there may be differential treatment of boys and girls under these conditions of stress. Overall, these results indicate that increased economic marginalization is having a profound effect on the health and well-being of indigenous Siberian groups. Further work is necessary to determine the proximate causes of the disturbing trends, and the potential solutions and interventions.  相似文献

Russia's indigenous peoples have been struggling with economic, environmental, and socio-cultural dislocation since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. In northern rural areas, the end of the Soviet Union most often meant the end of agro-industrial state farm operations that employed and fed surrounding rural populations. Most communities adapted to this loss by reinstating some form of pre-Soviet household-level food production based on hunting, fishing, and/or herding. However, mass media, globalization, and modernity challenge the intergenerational knowledge exchange that grounds subsistence practices. Parts of the circumpolar north have been relatively successful in valuing and integrating elder knowledge within their communities. This has not been the case in Russia. This article presents results of an elder knowledge project in northeast Siberia, Russia that shows how rural communities can both document and use elder knowledge to bolster local definitions of sustainability and, at the same time, initiate new modes of communication between village youth and elders.  相似文献

After implantation of a permanent pacemaker, patients may experience severe symptoms of dyspnea, palpitations, malaise, and syncope resulting from pacemaker syndrome. Although pacemaker syndrome is most often ascribed to the loss of atrioventricular (A-V) synchrony, more recent data may also implicate left ventricular dysynchrony caused by right ventricular pacing. Previous studies have not shown reductions in mortality or stroke with rate-modulated dual-chamber (DDDR) pacing as compared to ventricular-based (VVI) pacing. The benefits in A-V sequential pacing with the DDDR mode are likely mitigated by the interventricular (V-V) dysynchrony imposed by the high percentage of ventricular pacing commonly seen in the DDDR mode. Programming DDDR pacemakers to encourage intrinsic A-V conduction and reduce right ventricular pacing will likely decrease heart failure and pacemaker syndrome. The ability to generate spatial form is a fundamental characteristic of all living organisms, which has been much studied by successive generations of developmental biologists. In recent years increasing numbers of cell biologists have turned their attention to the mechanisms by which cells generate their spatial form. These include the mechanisms that position components in different places within the cell, that specify the position of these components, and that generate the overall shape of these components. These problems are entirely analogous to those studied by developmental biologists, although usually at the level of the whole organism, organ or tissue. Because the organization of all cells is basically similar, it is possible that the concepts and the underlying molecular mechanisms of cell morphogenesis may be highly conserved. In this article we consider the generation of spatial form within the fission yeast cell, focusing on emerging new concepts, which may be applicable to the morphogenesis of other cells.  相似文献

The Amaryllidaceae alkaloids, represent a group of isoquinoline alkaloids, which are produced almost solely by members of the Amaryllidaceae family. The alkaloids of this family have attracted considerable amount of interest due to some important pharmacological activities they were shown to possess. In the last decade, our phytochemical studies on four Galanthus (Amaryllidaceae) species of Turkish origin have yielded quite a number of new alkaloids with diverse structures. Among these alkaloids, gracilines and plicamines constitute two new subgroups for the Amaryllidaceae alkaloids. The gracilines contain an incorporated 10b,4a-ethanoiminodibenzo[b,d]pyrane skeleton. The plicamines are dinitrogenous compounds, where the oxygen atom in position 7 of a tazettine skeleton is replaced by a nitrogen atom substituted by a pendant 4-hydroxyphenethyl moiety. One of the new alkaloids, galanthindole, which possesses a nonfused indole ring, unlike the already known subgroups of Amaryllidaceae alkaloids, may be considered as the prototype of a third new subgroup of the Amaryllidaceae alkaloids. Additionally, two known isoquinoline alkaloids which do not possess one of the established skeletons of the Amaryllidaceae alkaloids, namely ( − )-capnoidine and (+)-bulbocapnine, have been isolated from a Turkish Galanthus species. Totally, 21 new, 20 known alkaloids and 2 known lignans have been characterized. In this review, the isolation and structure elucidation of these compounds with interesting chemical structures are described.  相似文献

Background

This study focuses on health-related plant use among speakers of the critically endangered Naukan language (Inuit-Yupik-Unangan family) in the Russian Far East. The Naukan people were forced, in 1958, under Soviet consolidation, to move from their original settlement on Cape Dezhnev, leading to significant changes in spiritual worldview, subsistence, social structure, and language proficiency in the years that followed. Here, we focus on changes that elders report in their edible, medicinal, and spiritual uses of local plant species since their childhood.

Methods

The authors worked from 2014 to 2016 in the villages of Lavrentiya, Lorino, and Uelen, in the Chukotskiy district of the Chukotka autonomous region, directly adjacent to the Bering Strait. We conducted structured interviews, using an oral history approach, along with participant observation and collection of voucher specimens from the local arctic tundra. Those with Naukan names and uses represent 42 species in 25 families.

Results

Participants reported a decrease of 13% in the number of edible species that people currently harvest, from what they recall harvesting in their youth. On the other hand, the number of local species considered to be medicinal has actually increased by 225%. Current and past Naukan medicinal practices diverge in some notable ways from those of neighboring societies on the Alaskan side of the Bering Strait. Most of the spiritual significance of local plants species is remembered by only a few elders.

Conclusions

Naukan elders explained the large increase in use of medicinal plants by noting that their original concept of medicine emphasized prevention and that illnesses were often assigned a spiritual rather than physical cause. Increased integration with ethnic Russians after moving from Naukan led to the adoption not only of new plant uses, but also of an entirely different, more naturalistic way of viewing illness and treatment.

Abstract

Current ocean law negotiations reflect conflicts between two old and competing approaches: the view that the coastal state should control activities in any large adjacent ocean area, and the view that most of the ocean should be left open to the free use of all nations. Both approaches are laissez‐faire, leave the distribution of benefits to arbitrary factors, and are based on national exclusivity. In the negotiations this conflict is exhibited in competing claims regarding navigation, mineral resources, fishing, environmental protection, and strategic uses. A possible resolution has emerged in the concept of the whole ocean as a common resource of humankind, according to which no individual state has a right to benefit from the ocean except pursuant to arrangements sanctioned by the community, and rights to benefit are determined not arbitrarily but by membership in the community. The regime now likeliest to be produced by such an approach includes (1) a narrow territorial sea and various navigation guarantees, (2) a wide coastal band coupling coastal state managerial functions with permanent international prerogatives, and (3) purely international manage‐ment of the deep seabed.  相似文献
