Marine organisms living at low temperatures tend to have larger genomes and larger cells which suggest that these traits can be beneficial in colder environments. In fish, triploidy (three complete sets of chromosomes) can be induced experimentally following fertilization, which provides a model system to investigate the hypothesis that larger cells and genomes offers a physiological advantage at low temperatures. We tested this hypothesis by measuring metabolic rates and swimming performance of diploid and triploid Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) post smolts acclimated to 3 or 10.5 °C. At 10.5 °C, triploids had significantly lower maximum metabolic rates which resulted in a lower aerobic scope compared to diploids. In addition, triploids initiated ram ventilation at lower swimming speeds, providing further evidence of a reduced capacity to meet oxygen demands during strenuous activity at 10.5 °C. However, at 3 °C, metabolic rates and critical swimming speeds were similar between both ploidies, and as expected substantially lower than at 10.5 °C. Therefore, triploidy in colder environments did not provide any advantage over diploidy in terms of metabolic rate traits or swimming performance in Atlantic salmon. We therefore conclude that traits, other than aerobic scope and swimming performance, contribute to the trend for increased cell and genome size in marine ectotherms living in cold environments.  相似文献

Electromyographic (EMG) signals are composed of the superposition of the activity of individual motor units. Techniques exist for the decomposition of an EMG signal into its constituent components. Following is a review and explanation of the techniques that have been used to decompose EMG signals. Before describing the decomposition techniques, the fundamental composition of EMG signals is explained and after, potential sources of information from and various uses of decomposed EMG signals are described.  相似文献

This paper examines the application of EMG feedback for upper-extremity dysfunction secondary to neurologic injury. A rationale for the use of EMG feedback to enhance rotational components of upper-limb movement, train recruitment of the prime movers, and promote inhibition of motor responses that interfere with efficient and effortless movement is presented. Specific strategies that can be used to reinforce functional movement patterns are elaborated. A case study illustrating the application of the feedback strategies is provided. Despite sensory, perceptual, and cognitive impairments, a 53-year-old left hemiplegic obtained significant clinical upper-limb functional gains when given EMG feedback in conjunction with occupational therapy.  相似文献

Breast cancer (BC) has emerged as a deadly disease that affects the lives of millions of women worldwide. It is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. Advancements in BC screening, preventive measures and treatment have resulted in significant decline in BC related deaths. However, unacceptable levels of racial disparity have been consistently reported, especially in African-American (AA) women compared to European American (EA). AA women go through worse prognosis, shorter survival time and higher mortality rates, despite higher cancer incidence reported in EA. These disparities are independent of socioeconomic status, access to healthcare or age, or even the stage of BC. Recent race-specific genetic and epigenetic studies have reported biological causes, which form the crux of this review. However, the developments are just the tip of the iceberg. Prioritizing primary research towards studying race-specific tumor microenvironment and biological composition of the host system in delineating the cause of these disparities is utmost necessary to ameliorate the disparity and design appropriate diagnosis/treatment regimen for AA women suffering from BC. In this review article, we discuss emerging trends and exciting discoveries that reveal how genetic/epigenetic circuitry contributed to racial disparity and discussed the strategies that may help in future therapeutic development.  相似文献
