Chick‐a‐dee calls of Poecile (chickadee) and Baeolophus (titmouse) species are complex in terms of the structural composition of note types and the diversity of messages. Studies so far have mainly focused on the calls of various chickadee and just one titmouse species—the tufted titmouse (B. bicolor). To begin to address this lack of titmouse data, our study investigated variation in note composition of calls of bridled titmice (B. wollweberi). We obtained calls from 26 flocks in the Chiricahua Mountains of Arizona in the overwintering flocking period. Bridled titmice produce proportionally more non‐combinatorial call variants than combinatorial call variants. The number of the single noted calls furthermore exceeded the number of multinote calls. In general, structural variation in the combinatorial calls appears to be comparable to calls of better‐studied chickadees and of tufted titmice, although bridled titmice appear to have a unique call length distribution. We also analyzed some behavioral associations with call variation and found that flight behavior and close interactions between individuals were associated with use of specific note types. Finally, we found microgeographic variation in note type use in these calls. We discuss some possible explanations for call complexity in this species.  相似文献

The vocalisations of wild common marmosets, Callithrix jacchus, were recorded to investigate whether call rate by individuals is affected by time of day, age, sex or dominance rank within a group. We also investigated how vocalisation pitch was affected by age, focussing on a single common call, the trill call. Adults vocalised more than juveniles or infants during the majority of daylight hours. Only the call rate of juveniles varied significantly over the day. No differences were found between either sex or dominance rank with respect to rate of vocalisations. The trill calls emitted by young wild common marmosets were of a higher pitch than those emitted by adults. We conclude that the auditory communication of wild common marmosets is related to the age of the animals, both in terms of call rate and the physical characteristics of their vocalisations.  相似文献

Acoustic signals for mating are important traits that could drive population differentiation and speciation. Ecology may play a role in acoustic divergence through direct selection (e.g., local adaptation to abiotic environment), constraint of correlated traits (e.g., acoustic traits linked to another trait under selection), and/or interspecific competition (e.g., character displacement). However, genetic drift alone can also drive acoustic divergence. It is not always easy to differentiate the role of ecology versus drift in acoustic divergence. In this study, we tested the role of ecology and drift in shaping geographic variation in the advertisement calls of Microhyla fissipes. We examined three predictions based on ecological processes: (1) the correlation between temperature and call properties across M. fissipes populations; (2) the correlation between call properties and body size across M. fissipes populations; and (3) reproductive character displacement (RCD) in call properties between M. fissipes populations that are sympatric with and allopatric to a congener M. heymonsi. To test genetic drift, we examined correlations among call divergence, geographic distance, and genetic distance across M. fissipes populations. We recorded the advertisement calls from 11 populations of M. fissipes in Taiwan, five of which are sympatrically distributed with M. heymonsi. We found geographic variation in both temporal and spectral properties of the advertisement calls of M. fissipes. However, the call properties were not correlated with local temperature or the callers' body size. Furthermore, we did not detect RCD. By contrast, call divergence, geographic distance, and genetic distance between M. fissipes populations were all positively correlated. The comparisons between phenotypic Qst (Pst) and Fst values did not show significant differences, suggesting a role of drift. We concluded that genetic drift, rather than ecological processes, is the more likely driver for the geographic variation in the advertisement calls of M. fissipes.  相似文献

The gargle is a complex call of the black-capped chickadee Parus atricapillus associated with agonistic interactions. A large sample of calls was recorded from five sites in southeastern Wisconsin. Three sites were near one another and the other two with a different dialect pattern were more distant (all sites were within 15 km of each other). A typical call consists of about 6 notes selected from an array of about 15 different note-types that are shared among individuals in the same population. Note-types are given in many combinations, and any individual may deliver many different variations. Analysis of two- and three-note sequences shows a syntactical organization with certain note-types much more likely to precede or follow than others. In some cases linkage between note-types was nearly complete. Some differences occurred among individuals and sites, but general organizational rules were similar. One effect on ordering was acoustical structure of the notes. Higher pitched, shorter duration notes were more likely at the beginning than the end of the call which often consisted of trills. Organization of the gargle was compared to that of the chick-a-dee call of the same species. Similarities include recombinant properties, general acoustic rules and syntax. A major difference may be that in chick-a-dee calls various note combinations constituting a call have different meanings, while the various note combinations comprising an individual's repertoire of gargles may be functionally equivalent.  相似文献

Killer whale call repertoires can provide information on social connections among groups and populations. Killer whales in Iceland and Norway exhibit similar ecology and behavior, are genetically related, and are presumed to have been in contact before the collapse of the Atlanto-Scandian herring stock in the 1960s. However, photo-identification suggests no recent movements between Iceland and Norway but regular movement between Iceland and Shetland. Acoustic recordings collected between 2005 and 2016 in Iceland, Norway, and Shetland were used to undertake a comprehensive comparison of call repertoires of Northeast Atlantic killer whales. Measurements of time and frequency parameters of calls from Iceland (n = 4,037) and Norway (n = 1,715) largely overlapped in distribution, and a discriminant function analysis had low correct classification rate. No call type matches were confirmed between Iceland and Norway or Shetland and Norway. Three call types matched between Iceland and Shetland. Therefore, this study suggests overall similarities in time and frequency parameters but some divergence in call type repertoires. This argues against presumed past contact between Icelandic and Norwegian killer whales and suggests that they may not have been one completely mixed population.  相似文献

Individual distinctiveness in acoustic signals can allow receivers to respond appropriately to different individuals. The aim of this research was to examine signal variation and to investigate the relative importance of different acoustic properties for coding individual distinctiveness in the advertisement calls of male golden rocket frogs (Anomaloglossus beebei). We examined patterns of within‐individual and among‐individual variability in 760 advertisement calls of 40 males as well as repeatability in 16 additional males that were recorded on two different occasions. We examined eight call properties, and all properties exhibited significant among‐individual variation and moderate to high repeatability across days. We employed discriminant function analysis to examine individual distinctiveness statistically. These analyses assigned 79% of calls to the correct individual. Fine temporal properties, including pulse duration, pulse rate, and pulse interval, as well as the spectral property of dominant frequency, contributed most toward discrimination among individuals. These results indicate that individual male golden rocket frogs can be distinguished statistically by their advertisement calls. We use these findings to evaluate results of previous playback studies in A. beebei and to generate testable predictions regarding the potential for specific call properties to function in mate selection and social recognition.  相似文献

The mechanisms that underlie sexual selection rely upon within‐ and among‐individual variability in the targeted traits. In this study, we examined variation in the advertisement call of the booroolong frog (Litoria booroolongensis) at several different levels: between populations, between breeding seasons in the same population, among males within a population, within males between nights and within males in a single calling bout. The call of L. booroolongensis has multiple notes with a pulsed structure. We detected considerable variation in advertisement call structure between breeding seasons and between populations. The measured call properties ranged from static to dynamic; however, most properties were intermediate between the criteria that have been traditionally used to define call traits as static or dynamic (≤5 and ≥12% respectively). We compared actual and relative repeatabilities and found that the temporal call properties associated with the structure of the note had the highest values, suggesting that these characters in particular may respond to selection. We argue that relative repeatabilities are a particularly useful measure of the potential for evolutionary response to selection as they account for an individual's relative performance during the period of assessment in an ever‐changing breeding arena.  相似文献

Acoustic signalling is the most important form of communication in anuran amphibians. Here we recorded and analysed the calls of 18 male Guenther’s frogs (Hylarana guentheri) from the wild during the breeding season. The advertisement calls of H. guentheri were composed of from a single note to five notes, with three-note calls the most recorded. All individuals produced calls around 600 Hz but calls ranged from 470 to 2600 Hz. Comparing the differences between individuals calls, we found within-male coefficients of variation (CVw) of call intensity, the fundamental frequency, the first formant, the second formant, the third formant and the fourth formant were static (less than 5% variation), whereas those of note duration, call duration, call interval, numbers of pulses and dominant frequency were dynamic (larger than 15% variation). Comparisons of the call characteristics of H. guentheri in this study with other studies from China, Singapore and Vietnam found call characteristics varied greatly between the five different locations.  相似文献

Calling behaviour and the characteristics of the males’ call are important for mate attraction, female mate choice and male mating success in anurans. In this study I investigated the variation in calling activity and the variation in one spectral (dominant frequency) and four temporal properties (call rate, call duration, duty cycle and pulse rate) of the advertisement call of strawberry poison frogs, Dendrobates pumilio, in two Costa Rican populations during two study periods. Regarding all call properties, no differences were found between populations or years, but between‐male variation was significantly higher than within‐recording and within‐male variation. Dominant frequency was less variable within and among males than temporal call properties and I classified the former as static and the latter as intermediate properties of the call. No call property seemed to be strongly affected by body length or weight. Moreover, I used behavioural observations to relate male calling behaviour to mating success. Calling activity was more variable between males and accounted for more variability in mating success in multiple regression models than any call property. Some call properties (call rate, dominant frequency and pulse rate) were also related to male mating success in one or two study periods. These call properties are probably important for females during courtship to assess their prospective mate and/or for competitive male–male interactions. Furthermore, I compared call properties and mating success of some males for which data were available for both study periods. Pulse rate was lower in the second than in the first year, suggesting age‐related changes in this call property. Moreover, male D. pumilio increased their relative mating success from the first to the second study year. Together with other studies, the data of this study suggest that, in anurans, endurance rivalry contributes more to variation in male mating success than does female choice based on male characteristics.  相似文献

This paper examines molecular and phenotypic variability in the widely spread European hoverfly species complex Merodon avidus. Herein, based on the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and morphometric wing parameters, M. avidus is shown to comprise a complex of cryptic species, and one variety is redefined as a valid species: M. bicolor Gil Collado, 1930 (as var. of spinipes). The species M. bicolor, M. avidus A, and M. avidus B were clearly delimited based on their wing size. A total of 29 M. avidus and M. bicolor individuals presented 20 mtDNA haplotypes, four of which were shared by M. avidus A and M. avidus B, three were confined to M. bicolor, seven to M. avidus A, and six to M. avidus B. Sequence divergences between lineages occurring in the Balkan and in Spain ranged from 4.93 to 6.0 (uncorrected p in %) whereas divergences between M. avidus A and M. avidus B were 0.26 to 1.56. Divergence among morphologically identified individuals of M. avidus A and M. avidus B species ranged from 0.13 to 1.58, and from 0.13 to 0.52, respectively. The phenotypic substructuring and observed genetic uniqueness of populations in spatially and temporally fragmented M. avidus taxa were used to identify genetic units. The early split of two allopatric lineages, Spanish M. bicolor and Balkan M. avidus, was followed by diversification in each lineage. Tape-recorded advertisement calls of Gastrophryne carolinensis and G. olivacea, obtained in Texas and southern Louisiana, were analyzed by means of an analogue audiospectrograph. Samples were grouped into four areas: allopatric and sympatric for G. carolinensis, and combined adjacent allopatric/shallow sympatric, and sympatric for G. olivacea. Three attributes of the advertisement call (call duration, pulse rate, and dominant frequency) were investigated, with water temperature at the calling site as the independent variable. Values for dominant frequency do not overlap between species, across the full range of recording temperatures, and those of sympatric G. carolinensis are displaced away from those of both groups of G. olivacea (which are very similar)—thus indicating a pattern of geographic variation consistent with reproductive character displacement. There is considerable overlap in the values for duration and for pulse rate of each species when considered alone, but there is only slight overlap of the scatters of points for the pairs of values. For both species, no consistent patterns of correlation were detected between the three attributes of the call and the snout–vent length of the emitter, thus reducing the likelihood that the divergence in calls is due to pleiotropic effects of body size.  相似文献

The sub-family Conocephalinae constitutes one of the richest groups of katydids in terms of diversity and distribution. Tropical katydids especially in India have largely escaped academic attention. Here, we record and describe call patterns for six conehead katydids from India: Conocephalus melanus, Conocephalus sp X, Euconocephalus indicus, Euconocephalus mucro, and Euconocephalus sp Y from North-Eastern Himalayas and Euconocephalus pallidus from the Western Ghats. All the species showed broadband frequency spectra (10.5–42.4 kHz), and three of the six species showed high rates of calling (289–453 syllables/s). We observed that the co-occurring call types never called at the same time or from the same location. We hypothesized this partitioning between call types is due to similarity in their calls; we used non-metric multi-dimensional scaling (NMDS) to investigate patterns of temporal or habitat-partitioning that some of the co-occurring call types exhibited during the course of study. The co-occurring Euconocephalus sp Y and E. mucro with high degree of overlap and similarity in their calls exhibited partitioning on a spatial scale. Conocephalus sp. X and C. melanus with distinct calling activity peaks formed separate clusters based on temporal call structures. As females rely heavily on spectral qualities, we speculate partitioning on temporal scale to avoid heterospecific interference due to similar spectral properties between the two call types.  相似文献

Pant hoots, a type of long-distance calls of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), were played back to two male chimpanzees in a group of seven captive individuals to determine if chimpanzees would modify those vocalizations in response to strange males. Subjects emitted pant hoots with higher rates of delivery, shorter duration of buildup, and lower minimum fundamental frequency of climax when they were presented with pant hoots of strangers than when they produced the calls spontaneously. Considering the direction of acoustical change, we concluded that the rate of delivery, duration of buildup, and minimum frequency of climax might be associated with the underlying emotional states of the callers rather than call matching. Individual difference between two subject males was significant in minimum frequency and duration of climax and in average frequency of call, which appears to reflect differences of the caller's age and social status. These results suggest that different acoustic variables relate to within- and interindividual differences of these vocalizations. Received: March 7, 2000 / Accepted: May 8, 2000  相似文献

Both sexes of the planthopper Ribautodelphax imitans produce species specific acoustic signals. Earlier experiments have shown that isolation between Ribautodelphax species in captivity is at least partly due to male preference for calls of conspecific females. The genetic basis of the female call is studied by bi-directional artificial selection for large and small interpulse intervals (IPI). This resulted in non-overlapping distributions of IPI after only five generations. The mean of eight realized heritability estimates over five generations was above 80%; estimates over ten generations were generally well above 50%. The character is shown to be of a polygenic nature, determined by at least 6 segregating genetic factors. The other features of the female call, strophe duration, and modulation of pulse repetition frequency within the strophe, showed significantly correlated responses. Sexual isolation tests after 10 generations of selection revealed significant symmetrical assortative mating, but coselected males did not exhibit a significant preference for playback calls of females from their own selection line. In view of the high heritability for the call character, and the considerable ecological isolation among Ribautodelphax species, it seems unlikely that the female call differentiated as an adaptation to prevent hybridization (reinforcement). More likely, call and call preference were shaped by sexual selection during allopatry, and may have (had) incidentally an effect in species isolation.  相似文献

The origin and meaning of echolocation call frequency variation within rhinolophid bats is not well understood despite an increasing number of allopatric and sympatric examples being documented. A bimodal distribution of mean regional call frequency within the Okinawa‐jima Island population of Rhinolophus cornutus pumilus (Rhinolophidae) provided a unique opportunity to investigate geographic call frequency variation early in its development. Individual resting echolocation frequencies, partial mitochondrial DNA D‐loop sequences and genotypes from six microsatellite loci were obtained from 288 individuals in 11 colonies across the entire length of the island, and nearby Kume‐jima Island. Acoustic differences (5–8 kHz) observed between the north and south regions have been maintained despite evidence of sufficient nuclear gene flow across the middle of the island. Significant subdivision of maternally inherited D‐loop haplotypes suggested a limitation of movement of females between regions, but not within the regions, and was evidence of female philopatry. These results support a ‘maternal transmission’ hypothesis whereby the difference in the constant frequency (CF) component between the regions is maintained by mother–offspring transmission of CF, the restricted dispersal of females between regions and small effective population size. We suggest that the mean 5–8 kHz call frequency difference between the regions might develop through random cultural drift.  相似文献

What is the relationship between genetic or environmental variation and the variation in messenger RNA (mRNA) expression? To address this, microarrays were used to examine the effect of genetic and environmental variation on cardiac mRNA expression for metabolic genes in three groups of Fundulus heteroclitus: (i) individuals sampled in the field (field), (ii) field individuals acclimated for 6 months to laboratory conditions (acclimated), or (iii) individuals bred for 10 successive generations in a laboratory environment (G10). The G10 individuals have significantly less genetic variation than individuals obtained in the field and had a significantly lower variation in mRNA expression across all genes in comparison to the other two groups (P = 0.001). When examining the gene specific variation, 22 genes had variation in expression that was significantly different among groups with lower variation in G10 individuals than in acclimated individuals. Additionally, there were fewer genes with significant differences in expression among G10 individuals vs. either acclimated or field individuals: 66 genes have statistically different levels of expression vs. 107 or 97 for acclimated or field groups. Based on the permutation of the data, these differences in the number of genes with significant differences among individuals within a group are unlikely to occur by chance (P < 0.01). Surprisingly, variation in mRNA expression in field individuals is lower than in acclimated individuals. Relative to the variation among individual within a group, few genes have significant differences in expression among groups (seven, 2.3%) and none of these are different between acclimated and field individuals. The results support the concept that genetic variation affects variation in mRNA expression and also suggests that temporal environmental variation associated with estuarine environments does not increase the variation among individuals or add to the differences among groups.  相似文献

We analyzed variation in advertisement calls and allozymes in 30 populations along a 5000-km transect throughout most of the range of the túngara frog, Physalaemus pustulosus. All 12 call variables measured show significant differences among populations despite the importance of the advertisement call in species recognition. Some call variables exhibited clinal variation, whereas most others differed between the two major allozyme groups that have invaded Panama at different times, perhaps 4–4.5 million yr apart. Call variables that primarily affect discrimination among conspecifics tended to exhibit greater variation than call variables that are crucial for species recognition. The proximate mechanism of production underlying a call variable, however, is a better predictor of its variation. Contrary to predictions of some sexual selection models, call variation exhibits predictable patterns of geographical variation, although a substantial portion of variation among populations is not explained by geographic position. Although allozymes, calls, and geography usually covary, closer populations can have more similar calls independent of allozyme similarity.  相似文献

Starch gel electrophoresis was used to study variation at 11 loci in mussels sampled mainly from British coastal sites. Two types of mussel were identified, Mytilus edulis, the common mussel and its southern relative Mytilus galloprovincialis. Several partially diagnostic loci were used to map the distribution of the two forms. Mytilus edulis was present at all sites sampled in Britain and Ireland but was at low frequency in SW England; M. galloprovincialis was detected in SW England, the south and west of Ireland. Scotland and NE England, but was absent from south Wales, the Irish sea coasts of Wales and Ireland, and SE England. Apart from the occurrence of M. galloprovincialis in NE England, this distribution conforms with the results of studies using morphological characters and parallels the distribution of many other southern species in Britain. At the microgeographical level, M. edulis was found to prefer more sheltered and estuarine conditions than M. galloprovincialis. Analysis using the best diagnostic loci showed that hybridization is occurring between M. edulis and M. galloprovincialis at all localities where they occur sympatrically but that the extent of hybridization varies considerably between localities. The distribution of localities having high proportions of hybrid individuals is best interpreted by assuming that hybrids have higher fitness than parental types at these localities. A study was made of variation within and between those localities where only M. edulis individuals were observed. Little significant geographic variation in allele frequency was detected, but significant deficits of heterozygotes compared with Hardy-Weinberg expectations were seen for most loci. Analysis suggests that the Wahlund effect is not involved and that the most likely cause of the deficit is low frequencies of null alleles. In M. edulis no differences in phenotypic variance in shell height and width were observed between samples of multiply heterozygous and multiply homozygous individuals and no genetic differences were found between juveniles and adults. Overall little evidence was found that balancing selection is responsible for maintenance of the polymorphisms studied in M. edulis. The pattern of geographic variation in gene frequencies in Mytilus in the British Isles is discussed in relation to variation in the south and north of Europe and North America. It is concluded that steep clines in gene frequencies in M. edulis observed by other workers in the Baltic and in Long Island Sound cannot be attributed to the presence of M. galloprovincialis.  相似文献
