A previous experiment(Herzfeld & Taub, 1977) demonstrated that slide projections and explicit suggestions relating to thermal experiences can significantly augment temperature self-regulations training(.5° F,p<.05). However, the experimental design was thought to result in an underestimate of the magnitude of the effect, since each subject served as his own control and could therefore make use on nonsuggestion training days of material provided on training days. In this experiment, separate groups of subjects either were given feedback combined with the suggestion procedure on each of 8 training days or were given feedback alone. The mean temperature self-regulation of the suggestion group(2.01° F) was significantly better than the self-regulation(.73) of the nonsuggestion group(t test,p<.01).a difference of 1.28° F.  相似文献

The structure of the anode space charge sheath of a vacuum arc is studied with allowance for the dependence of the negative anode fall on the ratio of the directed electron velocity v 0 to the electron thermal velocity v T for different values of the flux density of atoms evaporated from the anode. Poisson’s equation for the sheath potential is solved taking into account the electron space charge, fast cathode ions, and slow ions produced due to the ionization of atoms evaporated from the anode. The kinetic equation for atoms and slow anode ions is solved with allowance for ionization in the collision integral. Analytic solutions for the velocity distribution functions of atoms and slow ions and the density of slow ions are obtained. It is shown that the flux of slow ions substantially affects the spatial distribution of the electric field E(z) in the sheath. As the flux density increases, the nonmonotonic dependence E(z) transforms into a monotonic one and the sheath narrows. For a given flux of evaporated atoms Πa, the increase in the ratio of the directed electron velocity to the electron thermal velocity leads again to a nonmonotonic dependence E(z). As z increases, the electric field first increases, passes through the maximum, decreases, passes through the minimum E min, and then again increases toward the anode. There is a limiting value of the ratio (v 0/v T )* at which E min(z) vanishes. At v 0/v T > (v 0/V T )*, the condition for the existence of a steady-state sheath is violated and the profiles of the field and potential in the sheath become oscillating. The dependence of (v 0/v T )* on the flux density of evaporated atoms Π a is obtained. It is shown that the domain of existence of steady-state solutions in the sheath broadens with increasing Π a .  相似文献

Background

Throughout human history, a disproportionate degree of political power around the world has been held by men. Even in democracies where the opportunity to serve in top political positions is available to any individual elected by the majority of their constituents, most of the highest political offices are occupied by male leaders. What psychological factors underlie this political gender gap? Contrary to the notion that people use deliberate, rational strategies when deciding whom to vote for in major political elections, research indicates that people use shallow decision heuristics, such as impressions of competence solely from a candidate''s facial appearance, when deciding whom to vote for. Because gender has previously been shown to affect a number of inferences made from the face, here we investigated the hypothesis that gender of both voter and candidate affects the kinds of facial impressions that predict voting behavior.

Methodology/Principal Finding

Male and female voters judged a series of male and female political candidates on how competent, dominant, attractive and approachable they seemed based on their facial appearance. Then they saw a series of pairs of political candidates and decided which politician they would vote for in a hypothetical election for President of the United States. Results indicate that both gender of voter and candidate affect the kinds of facial impressions that predict voting behavior. All voters are likely to vote for candidates who appear more competent. However, male candidates that appear more approachable and female candidates who appear more attractive are more likely to win votes. In particular, men are more likely to vote for attractive female candidates whereas women are more likely to vote for approachable male candidates.

Conclusions/Significance

Here we reveal gender biases in the intuitive heuristics that voters use when deciding whom to vote for in major political elections. Our findings underscore the impact of gender and physical appearance on shaping voter decision-making and provide novel insight into the psychological foundations underlying the political gender gap.  相似文献

The value of the voltage fall across the anode sheath is found as a function of the current density. Analytic solutions are obtained in a wide range of the ratio of the directed velocity of plasma electrons v 0 to their thermal velocity v T . It is shown that the voltage fall in a one-dimensional collisionless anode sheath is always negative. At the small values of v 0/v T , the obtained expression asymptotically transforms into the Langmuir formula. Generalized Bohm’s criterion for an electric discharge with allowance for the space charge density ρ(0), electric field E(0), ion velocity v i (0), and ratio v 0/v T at the plasma-sheath interface is formulated. It is shown that the minimum value of the ion velocity v i * (0) corresponds to the vanishing of the electric field at one point inside the sheath. The dependence of v i * (0) on ρ(0), E(0), and v 0/v T determines the boundary of the existence domain of stationary solutions in the sheath. Using this criterion, the maximum possible degree of contraction of the electron current at the anode is determined for a short high-current vacuum arc discharge.  相似文献

Water flux through excised roots (Jv) is determined by root hydraulic conductance (Lp) and the ion flux to the xylem (Ji) that generates an osmotic gradient to drive water movement. These properties of roots are strongly temperature dependent. Abscisic acid (ABA) can influence Jv by altering Lp, Ji, or both. The effects of root temperature on responses to ABA were determined in two species differing in their temperature tolerances. In excised barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) roots, Jv was maximum at 25°C; 10 micromolar ABA enhanced Jv, primarily by increasing Lp, at all temperatures tested (15-40°C). In sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) roots, Jv peaked at 35°C; ABA reduced this optimum temperature for Jv to 25°C by increasing Lp at low temperatures and severely inhibiting Ji (dominated by fluxes of K+ and NO3) at warm temperatures. The inhibition of K+ flux by ABA at high temperature was mostly independent of external K+ availability, implying an effect of ABA on ion release into the xylem. In sorghum, ABA enhanced water flux through roots at nonchilling low temperatures but at the expense of tolerance of warm temperatures. These effects imply that ABA may shift the thermal tolerance range of roots of this heat-tolerant species toward cooler temperatures.  相似文献

In this study, a simple travel time-based runoff model was proposed to simulate a runoff hydrograph on soil surfaces with different microtopographies. Three main parameters, i.e., rainfall intensity (I), mean flow velocity (v m) and ponding time of depression (t p), were inputted into this model. The soil surface was divided into numerous grid cells, and the flow length of each grid cell (l i) was then calculated from a digital elevation model (DEM). The flow velocity in each grid cell (v i) was derived from the upstream flow accumulation area using v m. The total flow travel time through each grid cell to the surface outlet was the sum of the sum of flow travel times along the flow path (i.e., the sum of l i/v i) and t p. The runoff rate at the slope outlet for each respective travel time was estimated by finding the sum of the rain rate from all contributing cells for all time intervals. The results show positive agreement between the measured and predicted runoff hydrographs.  相似文献

The Multifractal version of the Detrended Fluctuation Analysis was used for the study of non-stationary dwell time series of Ca2+-activated K+ channels (KCa channels) in cultured kidney Vero cells and of voltage-dependent K+ channels (Kv channels) in mollusc (Lymnaea stagnalis) neurons. The data obtained can briefly be summarized as follows: (i) The generalized fluctuation function F q (l) strongly depends on the index (order) q; for monofractal time series, such dependence is nonexistent; (ii) The relationship between the scaling exponent τ commonly employed in standard multifractal analysis and q is characterized by two slopes and a transitory region, whereas monofractal processes are characterized by the linear dependence; (iii) The relationship between the singularity spectrum f(h) and the Hurst exponent h is bell-shaped, while in the case of monofractal processes it is represented by a single point f(h) = 1. Random mixing of the time series resulted in the narrowing of the spectrum f(h) and a shift of f(h) towards the value more characteristic of stochastic (monofractal) processes (h ~ 0.5). It is concluded that the activities of both KCa channels in kidney Vero cells and of KV channels in mollusc (Lymnaea stagnalis) neurons can be characterized as multifractal processes.  相似文献

Techniques are presented for analyzing Euler-Lotka models in which age-specific birth and death rates depend on a collection v = (v1,…, vn) of trait parameters. Sufficient conditions are established for the existence of a v such that the growth rate r(v) is locally optimal. The regulation of photosystem II (PSII) by light-, CO2-, and O2-dependent changes in the capacity for carbon metabolism was studied. Estimates of the rate of electron transport through PSII were made from gas-exchange data and from measurements of chlorophyll fluorescence. At subsaturating photon-flux density (PFD), the rate of electron transport was independent of O2 and CO2. Feedback on electron transport was observed under two conditions. At saturating PFD and low partial pressure of CO2, p(CO2), the rate of electron transport increased with p(CO2). However, at high p(CO2), switching from normal to low p(O2) did not affect the net rate of photosynthetic CO2 assimilation but the rate of electron-transport decreased by an amount related to the change in the rate of photorespiration. We interpret these effects as 1) regulation of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphatecarboxylase (RuBPCase, EC 4.1.1.39) activity to match the rate of electron transport at limiting PFD, 2) regulation of electron-transport rate to match the rate of RuBPCase at low p(CO2), and 3) regulation of the electron-transport rate to match the capacity for starch and sucrose synthesis at high p(CO2) and PFD. These studies provide evidence that PSII is regulated so that the capacity for electron transport is matched to the capacity for other processes required by photosynthesis, such as ribulose-bisphosphate carboxylation and starch and sucrose synthesis. We show that at least two mechanisms contribute to the regulation of PSII activity and that the relative engagement of these mechanisms varies with time following a step change in the capacity for ribulose-bisphosphate carboxylation and starch and sucrose synthesis. Finally, we take advantage of the relatively slow activation of deactivated RuBPCase in vivo to show that the activation level of this enzyme can limit the rate of electron transport as evidenced by increased feedback on PSII following a step change in p(CO2). Two extracellular polysaccharides, designated as WPA and WPB, were isolated from the fungus Aspergillus aculeatus using Q-Sepharose fast flow and Sephacryl S-300 column chromatography. WPA composed of mannose and galactose in a molar ratio of 3.9:1.0, and WPB mainly contained mannose. The molecular weight of WPA and WPB was about 28.1 kDa and 21.0 kDa, respectively. On the basis of methylation and NMR analysis, the possible main chain of WPA was [→5)-β-D-Galf-(1 → 2,6)-α-D-Manp(1→], and WPB was mainly [→2,6)-α-D-Manp(1→], both with [α-D-Manp(1 → 2)-α-D-Manp(1 → 2)-α-D-Manp(1→] substituted at C-2 of [→2,6)-α-D-Manp(1→]. Meanwhile, WPA displayed a stronger anti-proliferative effect than WPB on HeLa, MCF-7 and MGC-803 cells in vitro. WPA and WPB could arrest HeLa cells in G2/M phase and induce HeLa cells apoptosis. Thus, our study provides evidence that WPA and WPB may be taken as potential candidates for treating cervical carcinoma.  相似文献

The kinematic characteristics {f(v), A(v), w(v)} allow a first-approximation representation of locomotor synergies in the swimming of fish: f is the frequency of the transverse oscillations, A is the amplitude of the caudal fin sweep, w is the velocity of the locomotor wave, and v is the locomotion speed. The additional compared characteristics included the step length L(v) and the wavelength λ(v), where LvT is the distance covered by the fish during the period T ≡ 1/f, and λwT. These kinematic characteristics were derived from video recordings of swimming in six fish species. Three of the species investigated belonged to the anguilliform type, while the three others belonged to the carangiform type. The constant value of the wavelength λ at all speeds v was the common feature of the two types. The anguilliform fish performed a oneparameter version of locomotion control: the locomotion speed v changed due to the change of the wave velocity w and the undulatory amplitude remained constant. The carangioid fish used a two-parameter version of control, with changes in both the wave velocity w and the amplitude of undulations of the body and tail fin.  相似文献

In the search for new metal-based drugs against diseases produced by trypanosomatid parasites, four organoruthenium(II) compounds [Ru2(p-cymene)2(L)2]X2, where L are bioactive 5-nitrofuryl-containing thiosemicarbazones and X?=?Cl or PF6, had been previously obtained. These compounds had shown activity on Trypanosoma brucei, the etiological agent of African trypanosomiasis. Because of genomic similarities between trypanosomatides, these ruthenium compounds were evaluated, in the current work, on Trypanosoma cruzi, the parasite responsible of American trypanosomiasis (Chagas disease). Two of them showed significant in vitro growth inhibition activity against the infective trypomastigote form of T. cruzi (Dm28c clone, IC50?=?11.69 and 59.42 μM for [Ru2(p-cymene)2(L4)2]Cl2 and [Ru2(p-cymene)2(L1)2]Cl2, respectively, where HL4?=?5-nitrofuryl-N-phenylthiosemicarbazone and HL1?=?5-nitrofurylthiosemicarbazone), showing fairly good selectivities toward trypanosomes with respect to mammalian cells (J774 murine macrophages). Moreover, [Ru2(p-cymene)2(L2)2]Cl2, where HL2?=?5-nitrofuryl-N-methylthiosemicarbazone, was synthesized in order to evaluate the effect of improved solubility on biological behavior. This new chloride salt showed higher activity against T. cruzi than that of the previously synthesized hexafluorophosphate one (Dm28c clone, IC50?=?14.30 μM for the former and 231.3 μM for the latter). In addition, the mode of antitrypanosomal action of the organoruthenium compounds was investigated. The complexes were not only able to generate toxic free radicals through bioreduction but they also interacted with two further potential parasite targets: DNA and cruzipain, a cysteine protease which plays a fundamental role in the biological cycle of these parasites. The results suggest a “multi-target” mechanism of trypanosomicidal action for the obtained complexes.  相似文献

The use of monetary incentives to enhance the effects of electromyographic(EMG) feedback training was studied in five stabilized stroke patients with hemiplegia. The study was divided into Baseline, EMG Feedback Training, Feedback Training Plus Incentives, and Follow-Up treatment conditions. Integrated EMG activity was recorded simultaneously from the anterior tibialis and medial gastrocnemius muscles during relaxation and dorsiflexion of the affected foot. Patients were instructed to try to increase anterior tibialis EMG activity while decreasing EMG activity in the medial gastrocnemius. Range of motion was measured both prior to and immediately following the Baseline and Feedback Training conditions. Results suggested that(a) EMG feedback training produced greater EMG control and range of motion than did unassisted practice, and(b) the addition of monetary incentives may enhance the effects of feedback training, possibly through its effect on patient motivation.  相似文献

The slow oxidation of alkanes (from methane to hexane) in their stoichiometric mixtures with oxygen or air under the action of nanosecond pulsed discharges was investigated. The discharges were excited in a tube of diameter 5 cm and length of 20 cm by 25-ns voltage pulses with an amplitude of 10 kV and a repetition rate of 40 Hz. The initial pressure in the mixture was varied in the range 0.76–10.1 torr. The current, the electric field strength, and the power deposited in a discharge were measured with a nanosecond time resolution. In time-resolved and time-integrated measurements, the intensities of the following bands were determined: CO 2 + (B2Σ → X2Π, δv=0), CH(A2Δ, v′=0 → X2Π, v″=0), OH(A2Σ, v′=0 → X2Π, v″=0), CO(B1Σ, v′=0 → A1Π, v″=2), NO(A2Σ → X2Π, δv=3), N2(C3Π, v′=1 → B3Π, v″=7), N2(B3Π, v′=6 → A3Σ, v″=3), and N 2 + (B2Σ, v′=0 → X2Σ, v″=2). The methane concentration was measured from the absorption of He-Ne laser radiation. Based on the results of optical measurements, the times of the complete oxidation of hydrocarbons were determined.  相似文献

A Reed-Frost epidemic with inhomogeneous infection probabilities on a graph with prescribed degree distribution is studied. Each edge (uv) in the graph is equipped with two weights W(u,v) and W(v,u) that represent the (subjective) strength of the connection and determine the probability that u infects v in case u is infected and vice versa. Expressions for the epidemic threshold are derived for i.i.d. weights and for weights that are functions of the degrees. For i.i.d. weights, a variation of the so called acquaintance vaccination strategy is analyzed where vertices are chosen randomly and neighbors of these vertices with large edge weights are vaccinated. This strategy is shown to outperform the strategy where the neighbors are chosen randomly in the sense that the basic reproduction number is smaller for a given vaccination coverage.  相似文献

Objective To compare the effects of laparoscopic hysterectomy and abdominal hysterectomy in the abdominal trial, and laparoscopic hysterectomy and vaginal hysterectomy in the vaginal trial.Design Two parallel, multicentre, randomised trials.Setting 28 UK centres and two South African centres.Participants 1380 women were recruited; 1346 had surgery; 937 were followed up at one year.Primary outcome Rate of major complications.Results In the abdominal trial laparoscopic hysterectomy was associated with a higher rate of major complications than abdominal hysterectomy (11.1% v 6.2%, P = 0.02; difference 4.9%, 95% confidence interval 0.9% to 9.1%) and the number needed to treat to harm was 20. Laparoscopic hysterectomy also took longer to perform (84 minutes v 50 minutes) but was less painful (visual analogue scale 3.51 v 3.88, P = 0.01) and resulted in a shorter stay in hospital after the operation (3 days v 4 days). Six weeks after the operation, laparoscopic hysterectomy was associated with less pain and better quality of life than abdominal hysterectomy (SF-12, body image scale, and sexual activity questionnaires).In the vaginal trial we found no evidence of a difference in major complication rates between laparoscopic hysterectomy and vaginal hysterectomy (9.8% v 9.5%, P = 0.92; difference 0.3%, -5.2% to 5.8%), and the number needed to treat to harm was 333. We found no evidence of other differences between laparoscopic hysterectomy and vaginal hysterectomy except that laparoscopic hysterectomy took longer to perform (72 minutes v 39 minutes) and was associated with a higher rate of detecting unexpected pathology (16.4% v 4.8%, P = < 0.01). However, this trial was underpowered.Conclusions Laparoscopic hysterectomy was associated with a significantly higher rate of major complications than abdominal hysterectomy. It also took longer to perform but was associated with less pain, quicker recovery, and better short term quality of life. The trial comparing vaginal hysterectomy with laparoscopic hysterectomy was underpowered and is inconclusive on the rate of major complications; however, vaginal hysterectomy took less time.  相似文献

Molecular dynamics simulations supplement single-molecule pulling experiments by providing the possibility of examining the full free energy landscape using many coordinates. Here, we use an all-atom structure-based model to study the force and temperature dependence of the unfolding of the protein filamin by applying force at both termini. The unfolding time-force relation τ(F) indicates that the force-induced unfolding behavior of filamin can be characterized into three regimes: barrier-limited low- and intermediate-force regimes, and a barrierless high-force regime. Slope changes of τ(F) separate the three regimes. We show that the behavior of τ(F) can be understood from a two-dimensional free energy landscape projected onto the extension X and the fraction of native contacts Q. In the low-force regime, the unfolding rate is roughly force-independent due to the small (even negative) separation in X between the native ensemble and transition state ensemble (TSE). In the intermediate-force regime, force sufficiently separates the TSE from the native ensemble such that τ(F) roughly follows an exponential relation. This regime is typically explored by pulling experiments. While X may fail to resolve the TSE due to overlap with the unfolded ensemble just below the folding temperature, the overlap is minimal at lower temperatures where experiments are likely to be conducted. The TSE becomes increasingly structured with force, whereas the average order of structural events during unfolding remains roughly unchanged. The high-force regime is characterized by barrierless unfolding, and the unfolding time approaches a limit of ∼10 μs for the highest forces we studied. Finally, a combination of X and Q is shown to be a good reaction coordinate for almost the entire force range.  相似文献

IR spectra of crystal, solution and pseudo-gas phases (argon and nitrogen matrices) of Fe2Ru(CO)12 and of crystal and solution phases of Fe3(CO)12 were recorded. By quantitative data-handling procedures, structures and bond angles for bridging carbonyls were estimated. Fe2Ru(CO)12 in crystal has a bridging structure analogous to that of Fe3(CO)12, with two bridged carbonyls and C2v or pseudo-C2v symmetry. In solution, both samples contain the same carbonyl bridged structure of C2v symmetry,just as in pseudo- gas phase; the latter, however, contains other bridged molecules of unknown structures, too.  相似文献
