Benthic Cladocera were studied with a modified type of an activity trap in Lake Myvatn in 1990–1992. After feasibility experiments, the operation time and the distance of the traps from the benthic substrate were adjusted in order to minimize the effects of diurnal variation and the trapping of planktonic organisms. The trap catches of Eurycercus lamellatus were positively correlated with their abundance at the bottom as estimated by grab sampling (r = 0.910, P < 0.001). The usefulness of the activity trap was demonstrated by: (1) a lake-wide survey of the benthic Cladocera; (2) a study of the seasonal variation in the size distribution, abundance and sex ratio of E. lamellatus; and (3) a study of the seasonal succession of Chydorus sphaericus and Alona affinis. The variation of benthic Cladocera among 21 trap sites distributed on a 1–2-km scale across the lake exceeded the within-site variation. The sampling sites could be divided into five main groups based on cluster analysis. Eurycercus lamellatus was the most common species in the mat of filamentous green algae (Cladophorales). Alonella nana dominated the area of spring water inflow in the north basin and Macrothrix hirsuticornis the area of spring water inflow in the southeastern part of the lake. In other parts of the lake either Chydorus sphaericus or Alona quadrangularis tended to dominate. The size distribution and sex ratio of E. lamellatus was followed at two sites through one summer. In early summer most individuals were females less than 1.45 mm long. Around mid-summer they had grown to 0.69–3.1 mm. By the end of August the size distribution had become bimodal, with a large number of small males and a smaller number of much larger females. The seasonal succession in the abundance of E. lamellatus, A. affinis and C. sphaericus was followed at four sites over two seasons. With some exceptions the abundance of a species followed a similar seasonal trajectory on the different stations in any one year. In situ paired light and dark-stirred benthic flux chambers were used to estimate dissolved oxygen flux across the sediment–water interface in Lake Mývatn, Iceland. Three sampling stations were selected, each station reflecting a specific sedimentary environment, benthic communities, and water depth. During this study the phytoplankton density was low. Spatial and seasonal variations of bottom DO concentration and DO flux have been observed during this study. The oxygen consumption rate at all study sites had a mean of –89 (±44) mmol m–2 d–1 while the oxygen production rate due to benthic algae had a mean of 131 (±103) mmol m–2 d–1. There was a strong correlation (r=0.91) between oxygen consumption rate and temperature. This was presumably because of the temperature influence on rates of microbial and macrobenthic processes. The mean benthic primary production rate at all study sites was 1216 (±957) mg C m–2 d–1 between June 2000 and February 2001. Annual gross benthic primary production was estimated from the gross mean daily benthic DO production (P) and Redfield's C:O2 ratio of 106:138 to be 420 g C m–2 y–1 at station HO, 250 g C m–2 y–1 at B2 and 340 g C m–2 y–1 at station 95. Thus, the mean gross benthic primary production was estimated as 1151 mg C m–2 d–1 at station HO, 685 mg C m–2 d–1 at station B2, and 932 mg C m–2 d–1 at station 95.  相似文献

Lake Myvatn, northern Iceland is unique in that almost all the inflow is supplied through the groundwater by artesian springs. Hardly any surface water is encountered in the area which is covered by young and porous lava fields and transected by faults. The inflow of water and its chemical composition is, therefore, very stable. Geothermal and volcanic activities affect the groundwater system in the Lake Myvatn area and greatly influence the lake's chemistry and thus the biological conditions especially by providing continuous and ample sources of silica and sulphate. Groundwater studies have been intensified in the area during the last years for further developing the Námafjall geothermal field in the area and the Krafla geothermal field about 10 km from Námafjall. Groundwater chemistry was monitored regularly for 2 years at 22 sampling sites and for determining selected indicator constituents in the samples. Concurrently, several tracer tests were performed in the area, the rate of groundwater flow measured, a reservoir model of the groundwater system established. These studies enabled us to divide cold groundwater and geothermal effluent in the Lake Myvatn area into six distinct groups, based on stable isotope ratios, chemical composition and geographical position. The groundwater has separate origins in the local high ground north of Lake Myvatn and the highlands far to the south, possibly as far south as the glacier Vatnajökull. The waters are to a different extent affected by geothermal activity, and effects of volcanic activity were noted during the Krafla fires in 1975–1984. Although these have diminished, they have not completely disappeared. The effluent from Krafla seems to travel to the east of Lake Myvatn and traces of it have not been found to enter the lake. The Námafjall effluent on the other hand travels along fissures to the lake. Attempts made to simulate the evolution of the geothermal water of Krafla and by theoretically titrating local groundwater with rock at elevated temperatures and adding volcanic gas seem promising and result in a composition close to the natural one.  相似文献

Sub-arctic Lake Myvatn is one of the most productive lakes in the Northern Hemisphere, despite an ice cover of 190 days per year. In situ, transparent and dark flux chambers were used for direct measurements of benthic fluxes of dissolved oxygen, nutrients, silica and certain metals, taking into account primary production and mineral precipitation. The range of benthic flux observed for dissolved oxygen (DO), dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), ammonium, ortho-P, silica, calcium, and magnesium was –45.89 to 187.03, –99.32 to 50.96, –1.30 to 1.27, –0.51 to 0.39, –62.3 to 9.3, –33.82 to 16.83, and –23.93 to 7.52 mmol m–2 d–1, respectively (negative value indicating flux towards the lake bottom). Low benthic NH4 + and ortho-P fluxes were likely related to benthic algal production, and aerobic bottom water. Ortho-P fluxes could also be controlled by the dissolution/precipitation of ferrihydrite, calcite, and perhaps hydroxyapatite. The negative silica fluxes were caused by diatom frustule synthesis. Benthic calcium and magnesium fluxes could be related to algal production and dissolution/precipitation of calcium and/or Ca,Mg-carbonates. Fluxes of DO, DIC, pH and alkalinity were related to benthic biological processes. It is likely that some of the carbon precipitates as calcite at the high pH in the summer and dissolves at neutral pH in the winter. Mean of the ratio of gross benthic DIC consumption and gross benthic DO production was 0.94 ± 0.18, consistent with algal production using NH4 + as N source. During the summer weeks the water column pH remains above 10. This high pH is caused by direct and indirect utilisation of CO2, HCO3 , CO3 –2, H4SiO4 ° and H3SiO4 by primary producers. This study shows that in shallow lakes at high latitudes, where summer days are long and the primary production is mostly by diatoms, the pH is forced to very high values. The high pH could lead to a positive feedback for the Si flux, but negative feedback for the NH4 + flux.  相似文献

The distribution of chydorid Cladocera in Canada is given based on the examination of 584 samples collected from all the provinces and territories from 1978 through to 1984. Some species show regional distributions, while others are widely distributed. The preferences shown by some species to particular substrates are discussed. Further evidence is presented to show that some taxa previously claimed to be conspecific in Europe and North America may be different. In some instances the adult males tend to be more highly differentiated than the females, particularly in the structure of the postabdomen. The importance of taxonomic and distributional studies in understanding the biogeography of North American chydorids is discussed.  相似文献

The sub-arctic Lake Myvatn is one of the most productive lakes in the Northern Hemisphere, despite an ice-cover of 190 days per year. This is due to relatively high solar radiation, nutrient rich inflow waters, N2 fixation and internal nutrient loading. In order to define direction and magnitude of diffusive fluxes, soil water samplers were used to collect interstitial water from 25–150 cm depth, from within the diatomaceous sediment at the bottom of Lake Myvatn. Water depth at the sampling site was 225 cm. The pH of the interstitial water ranged from 7.16 to 7.30, while the pH of the lake water was 9.80–10.00. The concentrations of most solutes were similar 16 cm above the bottom of the lake at the sampling site and at the lake outlet. The concentrations of NO3, S, F, O2, Al, Cr, Mo, V, U, Sn and Sb were higher in the lake water than in the interstitial water. They will therefore diffuse from the lake water into the interstitial water. The concentrations of orthophosphates, PO4, and total dissolved P were highest at 25 cm depth, but Co and NH4 concentrations were highest at 50 to 100 cm depth. Thus they diffuse both up towards the lake bottom and down deeper into the sediments. The concentrations of Na, K, Ca, Mg, Sr, Mn, Li and alkalinity were greater within the sediments than in the lake water and increased continuously with depth. The Si concentration of the interstitial water was higher than in the lake water, it was highest at 25 cm depth and decreased slightly down into the sediments. The concentration gradient was greatest for bicarbonate, HCO3 , 1.5×10–7 mol cm–3 cm–1, and then in declining order for the solutes with the highest gradient; NH4, Si, Na, Ca, Mg, -S (diffusion into the sediments), K, PO4, Cl, Fe and Mn. The estimated annual diffusive flux of PO4 for Lake Myvatn was 0.1 g P m–2 yr–1, about 10% of the total PO4 input to Lake Myvatn. The H4SiO4° flux was 1.3 g Si m–2 yr–1, <1% of both the input and the annual net Si fixation by diatoms within the lake and the diffusive flux of dissolved inorganic carbon was 1% of the annual net C fixation by diatoms. Annual diffusive flux of NH4 + was 1.9 g N m–2 yr–1 similar to the input of fixed N to the lake and 24% of the net N fixation within Lake Myvatn. Thus it is important for the nitrogen budget of Lake Myvatn and the primary production in the lake since fixed nitrogen is the rate determining nutrient for primary production.  相似文献

In Lake Myvatn, Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) is economically the most important fish species. It is fast growing fish and its size at maturity is 35–50 cm at the age of 4 to 5 years. Catch statistics that are available for the whole 20th century show considerable long-term variation with the highest catch in the 1920s. The catches after 1970 are about 40% lower than the average from 1930–1969 and the annual catches for the last decade are the lowest. Stock size during the winter fishing season fluctuated considerably between years, with average annual fishing mortality of 83.9%. The Arctic charr population has been monitored annually since 1986, using standard series of gill nets of different mesh sizes. In 1988 one to three-year-old fish were heavily reduced in numbers during the summer months. There are indications of a similar event in 1997. In both years the charr changed its main diet from Cladocera and chironomid midges to three-spined sticklebacks Gasterosteus aculeatus and snails. At the same time its condition deteriorated. The catch in the monitoring fishery in Lake Myvatn correlates with the stock size in the beginning of the following winter fishing season deduced from Leslie's method and can give prospects for the fishery in the successive fishing season. An index of abundance of young charr also correlates with the number of chironomids and cladocerans and also with ducklings that feed on the same food as the charr. Large fluctuations in the Arctic charr population in Lake Myvatn seem to be related to changes in the main food species. The catch records available from Lake Myvatn can to a large extent be used as a measure of changes of the Arctic charr population in the lake for the past century.  相似文献

Studies on habitat selection by waterbirds usually describe large-scale distribution of populations or species but the dispersion within lakes is an understudied aspect. Detailed mapping of horned grebes (Podiceps auritus (L.)) on the North Basin of Lake Myvatn, Iceland, was carried out in late summer 2000 in order to compare their dispersion with water depth and submerged vegetation. Depth and vegetation were measured on sampling sites that were evenly distributed over the North Basin, and the information obtained compared to the distribution of the grebes. Four species of submerged macrophytes dominated in the North Basin; Myriophyllum spicatum, M. alterniflorum, Potamogeton filiformis and P. perfoliatus, mainly at depths <2.5 m. The grebes seemed to prefer to dive in shallow areas vegetated with stands of Myriophyllum spp. Densities of three-spined sticklebacks Gasterosteus aculeatus were compared in stands of M. spicatum and P. filiformis in order to estimate food availability. No difference was found, so the sticklebacks could not explain the preference of the grebes for areas vegetated with Myriophyllum spp. Nevertheless, this study indicates that shallow areas, vegetated with Myriophyllum spp., are important feeding areas for the horned grebe.  相似文献

This study identified two scales of pattern in the assemblages of Chydoridae (Crustacea, Branchiopoda, Anomopoda) in the shallow (<2 m) littoral zone of Plastic Lake, Ontario, Canada in the autumn of 1987. Twenty chydorid species were collected in 15 over-night sets of funnel traps in each of four habitat types. Analysis of variance multivariate analysis of variance, and discriminant function analysis revealed that assemblages differed among the habitats. Alona intermedia, Alona quadrangularis and Chydorus bicornutus were particularly abundant in the most structurally diverse habitat type – muddy, rock-strewn areas with approximately 40% bottom cover by the pipewort, Eriocaulon septangulare. In contrast, Anchistropus cf. minor was caught most often on bare shelves of rock. A second set of analyses demonstrated that chydorid assemblages also differed at a smaller scale, i.e. with local patchiness in bottom cover by the dominant macrophyte (E. septangulare). The abundance of Alona affinis was positively correlated with cover by E. septangulare, whereas Anchistropus cf. minor was caught mainly in microhabitats without vegetation. Alona intermedia and A. quadrangularis were most abundant in microhabitats with intermediate amounts of vegetation, suggesting their abundance is influenced by habitat factors other than vegetation.  相似文献

Moina weismanni Ishikawa is reported from Czechoslovakia, Hungary, and Yugoslavia. The species was formerly synonymized with Moina micrura Kurz, based on parthenogenotic females. In both species, parthenogenetic females have a characteristic postabdomen, antennules (characters formerly regarded as typical for a variety of M. micrura), and ephippium. Wales are quite different. Examined populations of both species are similar in length-to-width ratio. M. weismanni is typical for small, eutrophic but permanent, and for large temporary water bodies. Information on the life cycle of individual species is vital to an understanding of their ecology, particularly their distribution. In this investigation, aspects of the Macrothrix flabelligera (Cladocera, Macrothricidae) life cycle were studied in laboratory cultures under controlled conditions. Neonates from parthenogenetic females previously acclimatized were isolated and grown at constant temperature, in a 12-h/12-h light/dark cycle. Organisms were fed with a suspension of Scenedesmus bijugus at a concentration of 105 cells ml–1. Daily measurements of body length and age were made, to obtain the growth rate, size and age of primipara. M. flabelligera had high fecundity rates, producing broods of 13.6 eggs female–1. At 23.0°C, the duration of embryonic and post-embryonic development was 35.9 h and 4.9 days, respectively. The mean longevity was 12.7 days. A length–weight relationship was established and used to convert measured length into weight, in order to plot weight growth curves, as subsidiary information for future secondary production calculations.  相似文献

Long-term changes in a benthic assemblage associated with artificial reefs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The aim of the study was to evaluate the long-term development of a hard bottom benthic assemblage over a period of 20 years in an area off the mouth of a large river. The artificial reef of Fregene was selected because benthic assemblage data were available for the period 1981–1992. This artificial reef is located in the mid Tyrrhenian Sea, 5 nautical miles north of the two mouths of the Tevere River (Latium, Italy) and 1.5 nautical miles offshore from Fregene (Rome, Italy). The artificial reef was deployed in March 1981 for fisheries enhancement in 10–14 m of water on a sandy-silty seabed. The Tevere River carries suspended materials and a heavy load of organics since it transports Rome’s effluent, resulting in the eutrophic state of area waters. Benthic sampling was conducted in 2001 by SCUBA diving; two standard surfaces of 400 cm2 were scraped from the vertical walls of the same uppermost block in four different periods. All organisms were identified and counted. The methodology used is the same as that adopted in the previous periods, so that the 2001 data could be compared with past collected data. The benthic assemblage was analysed by cluster analysis using the Bray-Curtis index and clustered using the group average clustering algorithm. The SIMPER procedure was used to identify those taxa that characterize each station group identified by cluster analysis. Changes in benthic assemblages and hydrological trends of the Tevere River were investigated using the cumulative sum series method. The 20-year development of the benthic community, starting from the new substratum, is composed of different phases characterised by different benthic assemblages. In particular five different phases were distinguished: 1. Pioneer species recruitment (May 1981–June 1981); 2. Mytilus galloprovincialis (mussel) dominance (August 1981–November 1983); 3. M. galloprovincialis regression (July 1984–October 1985); 4. M. galloprovincialis absence (91–92); 5. Bryozoans bioconstruction dominance (2001). The dynamic succession of the observed benthic assemblages exhibited a good relation with the Tevere River flow. The Tevere River flow, and the subsequent sedimentation process, seems to have strongly influenced the benthic assemblage succession of the Fregene artificial reef. Guest editors: G. Relini & J. This article presents an evaluation of two sampling methods for assessing the biodiversity of heavily vegetated wetlands. The aim was to establish an effective sampling regime to maximise total taxon richness and minimise sampling effort. Three Integrated Constructed Wetland (ICW) systems in Annetown Valley, Co. Waterford, SE of the Republic of Ireland, were sampled during spring and summer 2005. The two methods that were evaluated were pond netting and two types of horizontal activity traps, namely “horizontal activity traps” (HATs) and modified “horizontal activity traps” (modified HATs). The activity traps provided a one-way funnel system and were constructed from 2 l plastic bottles, allowing for the passive collection of taxa. HATs were designed to capture macroinvertebrates in open water and modified HATs, which were designed specifically for this study, were used to sample within stands of dense emergent vegetation. Results show that a combination of pond netting and activity traps will yield a more complete estimate of taxon richness. The performance of Modified HATs was not significantly different from that of the HATs in dense vegetation. Tests on the sampling effort required for each method are also discussed. Changes among chydorid assemblages in Lake La Cruzsediments, from a core of 178 cm length, have beenstudied using community structure indices andmultivariate methods (cluster analysis, principalcomponents analysis).The results revealed the existence of two main sourcesof variation in these assemblages. One (axis I ofPCA1) is associated with the trophic level of thelake, which is hypothetised to be greater in thebottom and upper part of the core. Both zones arecharacterised by an increase in the relative frequencyof Chydorus sphaericus, accompanied by a markedreduction in the relative frequency of the mostabundant species throughout the history of the lake,Acroperus neglectus.The other source of variation (axis II of PCA1) may beinterpreted as the alternation of periods of dryer and wetter weather. Ouranalyses show the separation of two assemblages whichalternatively prevail in the sedimentary sequence, oneconstituted by Pleuroxus laevis, Alona guttata,Graptoleberis testudinaria and, sometimes, Alonarectangula, and another dominated by Chydorussphaericus, Alona quadrangularis, Alona affinis andsometimes Leydigia species. According to theecological preferences of these species, the dominanceof the first chydorid assemblage can be related toepisodes of higher temperature and with very low andfluctuating water level, or with a high water levelbut a very reduced extent of shallow water in thelake. Prevalence of the second group corresponds toepisodes with a colder environment and permanentwaters, the level of which could be variable but insuch a way that a benthic sublittoral zone maydevelop. The structure of the community is stronglyaffected by changes in lake level. High indices offluctuation in community structure and small mean bodysize of the chydorid assemblage marked the period withmore extreme dry conditions, characterised by Alona rectangula maxima. The peaks of C. sphaericuscoincided with peaks of the index offluctuation D0 and prevalence of smaller speciesof the chydorid assemblage.  相似文献

2005年6-7月在抚仙湖采集到底栖软体动物7科8属9种,其出现率为70%,分布的最大水深为118 m,平均水深为31 m,分布区内的平均密度为614 ind·m-2,平均生物量为80.64 g·m-2.软体动物主要分布在湖湾,在密度方面,长角涵螺和环棱螺占优势,在生物量方面,河蚬和环棱螺占优势.现存量分布北区大于南区,沿岸区大于湖心区,水草区大于无草区.软体动物密度分布主要受湖底理化性质影响,与表层水体营养水平相关关系不显著.  相似文献

Synopsis An approximately monthly sampling programme in Lake Ellesmere, Canterbury, New Zealand, from January 1974 to April 1976 yielded 487 eels. The stomachs were fixed in 10% neutralised formalin and the contents examined. Preliminary analysis indicated that the mollusc Potamopyrgus antipodarum, the isopod Austridotea annectens, the mysid Tenagomysis chiltoni, the amphipod Paracalliope fluviatilis, the midge larva Chironomus zealandicus and the teleosts Retropinna retropinna, Galaxias maculatus and Gobiomorphus cotidianus together made up the bulk of the diet. The pre-ingested dry weight (i.e. the reconstructed weight) of the most important of these prey species was obtained by relating the length of a digestion resistant part to actual dry weight in field collected specimens. Regression equations for this relationship in each season enabled the reconstructed dry weight of each stomach item to be calculated. In some instances reconstructed weight was less than the actual digested dry weight of the prey specimen. In every case the larger value was used. This method is referred to as Combination Dry Weight (CDW) and is believed to be new. These data, used in conjunction with the energy content of the species concerned, enabled the caloric dietary contribution of each prey species to be determined. Comparison of relative contribution to eel diet between CDW and energy values calculated from CDW and bomb calorimetry revealed large differences. Marked variations in diet between ⩽40 cm, 40.1–50 cm, and>50.1 cm size classes were also shown. Eels ≤40 cm feed primarily on invertebrates and become progressively more piscivorous as they grow. Eels >50.1 cm are almost entirely piscivorous. Seasonal differences in diet also exist within each size class examined.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to examine whether there was variation in the intensity of gamogenesis (sexual reproduction) in communities of chydorid cladocerans during the autumnal sexual reproduction period. The proportions of gamogenetic individuals (i.e., intensity) in the chydorid communities of seven lakes in southern Finland were determined in weekly samples throughout the autumn of 2005. The period of gamogenetic reproduction began very synchronously in the lakes as a response to climatic forcing and proportions of gamogenetic individuals progressively increased towards winter. However, wide variation was found in intensity among the communities. The high intensity probably was a response to some environmental stressors (e.g., invertebrate predation, crowding, competition, or changes in water chemistry) to ensure genetic variability and future populations. One common species, Alonella nana showed exceptional, dualistic, gamogenetic behavior, since in some communities it reproduced with high and in others with extremely low gamogenetic intensity. It is possible that in the former it responded to environmental stressors by exhibiting high intensity of gamogenesis, thus renewing its genotypes, while in the latter it succeeded primarily by parthenogenetic (asexual) reproduction, and was possibly perennial. The high gamogenetic intensity in A. nana was related to dystrophic and mesotrophic conditions, but it correlated positively only with water conductivity.  相似文献
