Pop‐up satellite archival tags were used to collect fisheries‐independent data that characterized the seasonal habitat occupancy and movement of Atlantic sturgeon Acipenser oxyrinchus Mitchill, 1815 in the Bay of Fundy (BoF). Atlantic sturgeon from Canadian and United States stocks aggregate annually for feeding in Minas Basin, inner BoF (45.28N, 64.18W), during May to September but depart to other locations from October to April. Sixteen PSAT tags were applied to sturgeon ranging from 152 to 203 cm total length captured and released in Minas Basin during May to August. Ten of the tags were reported after 1 year at large and provided pop‐off locations. Seven were recovered with archived data, or provided transmitted data sets, which were analyzed for depth and temperature occupancy from June 2011 to August 2013. During June to August while in the Minas Basin the sturgeon spent >90% of time at depths <10 m and temperatures of 16–22°C. Departure from Minas Basin through the Minas Passage was in September and October, when depth occupancy varied from <10 to 120 m. From November to April sturgeon were in the outer BoF, where mean depth occupancies ranged from 40 to 100 m at mean temperatures of 3–14°C. Deepest mean depth occupancy of 60 to 90 m was recorded during December 2011 and 2012, and coldest mean temperature occupancy of 0–4°C in March 2011 and 2012. During April and May mean depth and temperature occupancy ranges shallowed from 40 to <10 m and increased from 4 to 15°C, respectively. Tag pop‐off locations indicated that sturgeon spent the winter season in the outer BoF but by June had either migrated back to the Minas Basin or off the mouth of the Saint John River, a known spawning location.  相似文献

Atlantic sturgeon Acipenser oxyrinchus aggregate to feed from May to October in Minas Basin (45° N; 64° W), a large, cul‐de‐sac embayment of the inner Bay of Fundy. The aggregation consists mainly of migrants from the Saint John, NB and Kennebec Rivers, ME (99%). During 2004–2015, 4393 A. oxyrinchus were taken as by‐catch by commercial fish trawlers or at intertidal fishing weirs, and 1453 were marked and/or sampled and released. Fork length (LF) ranged from 458 to 2670 mm, but 72·5% were <1500 mm. Mass (M) ranged from 0·5 to 58·0 kg. The mass‐length relationship for fish ≤50 kg was log10M = 3·32log10LF ? 5·71. Observed growth of unsexed A. oxyrinchus recaptured after 1–8 years indicated fish of 90–179 cm LF grew c. 2–4 cm a year. Ages obtained from pectoral spines were from 4 to 54 years. The Von Bertalanffy growth model predicted K = 0·01 and L = 5209 mm LF. Estimated annual mortality was 9·5–10·9%. Aggregation sizes in 2008 and 2013 were 8804 and 9244 individuals, respectively. Fish exhibited high fidelity for yearly return to Minas Basin and population estimates indicated the total at‐sea number utilizing the Basin increased from c. 10 700 in 2010 to c. 37 500 in 2015. Abundance in the Basin was greatest along the north shore in spring and along the south shore in summer, suggesting clockwise movement following the residual current structure. Marked individuals were recaptured in other bays of the inner Bay of Fundy, north to Gaspé, Quebec, and south to New Jersey, U.S.A., with 26 recoveries from the Saint John River, NB, spawning run. Fish marked at other Canadian and U.S. sites were also recovered in Minas Basin. Since all A. oxyrinchus migrate into and out of the Basin annually they will be at risk of mortality if planned tidal power turbines are installed in Minas Passage.  相似文献

In 2009, the Fundy Ocean Research Centre for Energy (FORCE) developed a 1.6 x 1.0 km Crown Lease Area (CLA) to test Marine Hydrokinetic devices (MHKs) in Minas Passage (MP), a strait that connects the Bay of Fundy to Minas Basin (MB), Nova Scotia. Minas Basin is an important summer feeding aggregation site for numerous fishes including Atlantic sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus Mitchill, 1815) stocks from Canada and the US. In this study, acoustic tagging technology was used to describe sturgeon presence in the CLA, as well as an adjacent site proposed for MHKs deployment. During 2018 and 2019, 33.9% (n = 19/56 Atlantic sturgeon tagged) and 29.9% (n = 23/77 Atlantic sturgeon tagged) respectively, of sturgeon acoustically tagged in MB during 2014–2019 were detected in these two FORCE sites. Binomial General Linear Models (GLMs) were fit to determine if environmental parameters influenced the presence, or depth of Atlantic sturgeon in the FORCE sites. The only significant predictor of Atlantic sturgeon depth and presence at the FORCE sites was tide type. Atlantic sturgeon was found to have a higher likelihood of being detected during ebb tide (12%) as opposed to flood tide (3%). Apparent decline in the presence of sturgeon during flood tide was probably due to poor signal reception caused by turbulence from higher current speeds. Tagged sturgeon travelled through the FORCE sites pelagically at similar depths (27.5 ± 14.57 m) to those proposed for seabed mounted MHKs (~30 m), travelling deeper during flood tide than ebb, suggesting they may be at risk of spatial overlap with MHKs. While this study indicated that the duration Atlantic sturgeon utilized the FORCE sites throughout the summer appeared to be low, sturgeon from both endangered and threatened stocks migrated through this region during their yearly entry and exit to MB and were present for approximately 12% of the days assessed in this study.  相似文献

Habitat use, movement and residency of bull sharks Carcharhinus leucas were determined using satellite pop‐up archival transmitting (PAT) tags throughout coastal areas in the U.S., Gulf of Mexico and waters off the south‐east U.S. From 2005 to 2007, 18 fish (mean size = 164 cm fork length, LF) were tagged over all seasons. Fish retained tags for up to 85 days (median = 30 days). Based on geolocation data from initial tagging location to pop‐off location, C. leucas generally travelled c. 5–6 km day?1 and travelled an average of 143·6 km. Overall, mean proportions of time at depth revealed C. leucas spent the majority of their time in waters <20 m. They exhibited significant differences among depths but were not found at a particular depth regardless of diurnal period. Most fish occupied temperatures c. 32° C with individuals found mostly between 26 and 33° C. Geolocation data for C. leucas were generally poor and varied considerably but tracks for two individuals revealed long distance movements. One fish travelled from the south‐east coast of the U.S. to coastal Texas near Galveston while another moved up the east coast of the U.S. to South Carolina. Data on C. leucas movements indicated that they are found primarily in shallower waters and tend to remain in the same location over long periods. While some individuals made large‐scale movements over open ocean areas, the results emphasize the importance of the coastal zone for this species as potential essential habitat, particularly in areas of high freshwater inflow.  相似文献

To study smolt behaviour and survival of a northern Atlantic salmon Salmo salar population during river descent, sea entry and fjord migration, 120 wild S. salar were tagged with acoustic tags and registered at four automatic listening station arrays in the mouth of the north Norwegian River Alta and throughout the Alta Fjord. An estimated 75% of the post‐smolts survived from the river mouth, through the estuary and the first 17 km of the fjord. Survival rates in the fjord varied with fork length (LF), and ranged from 97·0 to 99·5% km?1. On average, the post‐smolts spent 1·5 days (36 h, range 11–365 h) travelling from the river mouth to the last fjord array, 31 km from the river mouth. The migratory speed was slower (1·8 LF s?1) in the first 4 km after sea entry compared with the next 27 km (3·0 LF s?1). Post‐smolts entered the fjord more often during the high or ebbing tide (70%). There was no clear diurnal migration pattern within the river and fjord, but most of the post‐smolts entered the fjord at night (66%, 2000–0800 hours), despite the 24 h daylight at this latitude. The tidal cycle, wind‐induced currents and the smolts' own movements seemed to influence migratory speeds and routes in different parts of the fjord. A large variation in migration patterns, both in the river and fjord, might indicate that individuals in stochastic estuarine and marine environments are exposed to highly variable selection regimes, resulting in different responses to environmental factors on both temporal and spatial scales. Post‐smolts in the northern Alta Fjord had similar early marine survival rates to those observed previously in southern fjords; however, fjord residency in the north was shorter.  相似文献

Allozyme variation was characterised by starch gel electrophoresis at 23 enzyme coding loci and one regulatory locus in Atlantic salmon from 53 rivers in Eastern Canada, encompassing the majority of the species' North American range. Variation among rivers was highly heterogeneous and eight of the 15 polymorphisms showed regionally restricted distributions. Nearest neighbour joining (NJ) analysis and multi‐dimensional scaling suggest six distinct regional groups; Labrador/Ungava, Gulf of Saint Lawrence, Newfoundland (excluding Gulf rivers), the Atlantic shore/Southern Uplands of Nova Scotia, the inner Bay of Fundy, and the outer Bay of Fundy. Approximately 25% of observed genetic variation was distributed among these regions with a weak though significant overall correlation of genetic and geographic distance (Mantel Test, r = 0·255, P = 0·005). Collectively, the rivers showed consistent divergence from European populations with strong bootstrap support for the two clusters across loci in the NJ analysis. Mean heterozygosity was 0·061 for both continental groups, but the European population showed more than twice the variation among populations. FST values were 0·076 and 0·176 for North America and Europe, respectively, with an overall FST of 0·330.  相似文献

The brown tide picoalga Aureococcus anophagefferens Hargraves et Sieburth was present in approximately equal numbers in 12 large scale (13,000 L) mesocosms at the start of a nutrient addition experiment in June 1985. Increases in abundance in untreated systems mimicked the pattern of bloom development in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, the seawater source for the experiment. Aureococcus increased to maximal values of 2.6 × 109 cells. L?1 and persisted at high numbers (108 cells·L?1) for 7–8 weeks. In nutrient addition tanks, the picoalgae bloomed briefly (1–3 weeks) but rapidly declined to the usual level (~107 cells·L?1) for eukaryotic algae in Narragansett Bay. The decline in picoalgae abundance was followed by an increase in total diatoms in all nutrient treated tanks. Mean picoalgae abundance in the mesocosms and the bay was significantly (P < 0.05) and inversely correlated (r =–0.93) with mean concentration of dissolved inorganic nitrogen. The persistence of the brown tide species in control mesocosms and Narragansett Bay appears related to its ability to grow at very low concentrations of dissolved inorganic nitrogen, levels previously shown to limit diatom growth.  相似文献

The effects of large, externally attached pop‐up satellite archival tags (PSATs) were compared with those of small implanted data storage tags (DSTs) on adult Atlantic salmon Salmo salar during their ocean migration in regards to depth utilization, diving depth, diving rate, diving speed and temperatures experienced. Additionally the return rate and growth of individuals tagged with PSATs was compared with those of small acoustic tags and DSTs. Overall, the depth distribution of individuals tagged with PSATs was similar to that of those tagged with DSTs, reflecting the pelagic nature of S. salar at sea. Individuals tagged with PSATs, however, dived less frequently and to shallower depths, and dived and surfaced at slower velocities. Sea surface temperatures experienced by individuals tagged with PSATs were similar to those experienced by those tagged with DSTs for the same time of year, suggesting that there were no large differences in the ocean migration. Return rates did not depend on whether individuals were tagged with PSATs or not, indicating that survival at sea was not impacted by PSATs in comparison to small internal tags. Individuals tagged with PSATs, however, had a smaller increase in body mass than those tagged with acoustic tags or DSTs. It was concluded that PSATs are suitable for use in researching large‐scale migratory behaviour of adult S. salar at sea, but that some effects on their behaviour from tagging must be expected. Effects of PSATs may be largest in the short term when S. salar are swimming in bursts at high speeds. Even though individuals tagged with PSATs performed deep and frequent dives, the results of this study suggest that untagged individuals would perform even deeper and more frequent dives than tagged individuals.  相似文献

Swimming performance was assessed in juvenile pink salmon Oncorhynchus gorbuscha (body mass <5·0 g) using five different protocols: four constant acceleration tests each with a different acceleration profile (rates of 0·005, 0·011, 0·021 and 0·053 cm s?2) and a repeated ramped‐critical swimming speed test. Regardless of the swim protocol, the final swimming speeds did not differ significantly (P > 0·05) among swim tests and ranged from 4·54 to 5·20 body lengths s?1. This result supports the hypothesis that at an early life stage, O. gorbuscha display the same fatigue speeds independent of the swimming test utilized. Whole body and plasma [Na+] and [Cl?] measured at the conclusion of these tests were significantly elevated when compared with control values (P < 0·05) and appear to be predominantly associated with dehydration rather than net ion gain. Given this finding for a small salmonid, estimates of swim performance can be accurately measured with acceleration tests lasting <10 min, allowing a more rapid processing than is possible with a longer critical swim speed test.  相似文献

Natural mortality of Atlantic sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus) has been determined to be low (M = 0.07). Reported herein is the mortality by beach stranding of 11 Atlantic sturgeon in Scot's Bay, part of the inner Bay of Fundy in Nova Scotia, Canada on 22 June 2014. Genetic analyses, histological analysis and age determination were performed to determine origin, maturity stage and age of the stranded Atlantic sturgeon. Microsatellite and mitochondrial DNA analyses indicated that four of the Atlantic sturgeon (2 males and 2 females) were from the Saint John River, NB population, which was designated as threatened by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada. Seven Atlantic sturgeon (1 male, 5 females, 1 unknown) were from the Kennebec River, Maine population, that was listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act in the U. S. Ageing of A. oxyrinchus Atlantic sturgeon by pectoral fin spine analysis determined that the mean age of the individuals from the Saint John River (x? = 24.25 years, SD = 5.0) and the Kennebec River (x? = 22.7 years, SD = 3.5) were not significantly different. This is the first report of a stranding event of Atlantic sturgeon, and describes a source of natural mortality affecting populations of concern in both Canada and the U. S.  相似文献

The stable isotope values for a range of size classes of Hyporhamphus regularis ardelio from Moreton Bay, south‐east Australia were determined. There was a positive linear relationship between δ13C and standard length (LS)(δ13C = 0·034 LS ? 16·23; r2 = 0·78). δ13C ranged from ?8·48 to ?17·29‰ with the smallest size class (50 mm LS) being on average 1·04‰ enriched with respect to that of zooplankton (Temora turbinata) and 7·97‰ depleted compared to Zostera capricorni. δ13C was positively correlated with LS(P < 0·01)(more enriched with increasing LS) with those fish of the largest size class (225 mm LS) being 9·86 and 0·84‰ enriched than T. turbinata and Z. capricorni, respectively. There was no detectable trend in δ15N values with LS(P > 0·01) with δ15N, ranging from 9·18 to 11·00‰. Fish of all size classes were on average 2·32 and 7·63‰ more enriched than zooplankton and seagrass, respectively. Carbon isotope data indicate that H. r. ardelio commence life as carnivores and change to a diet in which seagrass is the primary carbon source. The dependence on animal matter, however, is always present. Due to the low percentage of nitrogen in Z. capricorni(2·5%) compared to zooplankton (9·1%) it appears that nitrogen from zooplankton is necessary throughout their life history with the carbon requirements for these fish coming chiefly from Z. capricorni.  相似文献

Photosynthesis and dark respiration rates were measured in water and in air, and the capacity to recover photosynthetic activity from emersion stress was examined for two species of intertidal, epiphytic macroalgae—Bostrychia calliptera (Montagne) Montagne and Caloglossa leprieurii (Montagne) J. Agardh—collected on prop roots of the red mangrove Rhizophora mangle L. in Buenaventura Bay, Pacific coast of Colombia. In both species, net photosynthetic rates were significantly higher under submersed conditions. Maximum photosynthetic rates (Pmax) in water and in air were highest in B. calliptera, 126 ± 4 versus 52 ± 9 μmol O2·mg chl a−1·h−1, respectively. In C. leprieurii, Pmax of submerged plants in water and in air were 98 ± 9 versus 30 ± 11 μmol O2·mg chla−1·h−1. The photoinhibition model of Platt et al. (1980) was used to fit the experimental data in both water and air for both species. Photoinhibition occurred at irradiance as low as 200 μmol·m−2·s−1. The photosynthesis–light response curves demonstrated an adaptation to shaded habitats for both species, as light compensation points in water and air for both species were below 17 ± 5 μmol·m−2·s−1. The rate of dehydration was significantly lower in thalli of B. calliptera compared to C. leprieurii. An increase of photosynthetic activity in B. calliptera was evident between 5% and 15% water loss, but rates decreased thereafter with declining water content. In C. leprieurii, desiccation negatively influenced photosynthetic rates that significantly decreased linearly with declining water content. In B. calliptera, net photosynthesis reached zero only at a water content between 29% and 35%, whereas in C. leprieurii no net photosynthesis occurred in plants containing less than about 50% of their relative water content. Resubmerged plants ofB. calliptera exhibited 100% photosynthetic recovery after 45 min, whereas C. leprieurii recovered 100% at about 120 min. On the basis of the comparison of rates of light-saturated net photosynthesis for B. calliptera in air versus in water, aerial photosynthetic activity ranged from 35% to 42% of that in water, whereas the emersed photosynthetic capacity of C. leprieurii ranged from 24% to 29% of that in water. Using tidal predictions and the emersed photosynthetic rates, a carbon balance model was constructed for both species over a single daylight period. The calculations indicated that emersed photosynthesis increased average daily carbon production of B. calliptera by 17% and C. leprieuri by 12%. The physiological responses to desiccation stress and the photosynthetic recovery capacities between species correlated with, and may determine, their vertical distribution in the mangrove habitats of Buenaventura Bay.  相似文献

A total of 255 longnosed skate Dipturus oxyrinchus caught in Sardinian waters (central‐western Mediterranean Sea), was analysed with respect to fish total length (LT), season and depth, in order to provide information on diet and feeding behaviour. Specimens ranging from 93 to 1153 mm LT, were collected at depths between 121 and 671 m, during experimental trawl surveys carried out from 2005 to 2010. The diet comprised crustaceans [prey specific index of relative importance (%IPSRI) = 72·69], teleosts (%IPSRI = 10·28) and molluscs (%IPSRI = 10·94). Levins' index (Bi) showed a narrow niche breadth (Bi = 0·35). The mean ± s.e. trophic level (TL) was 3·63 ± 0·50. The analysis showed major ontogenetic changes in the feeding behaviour. Early life stages were characterized by a benthic diet, which changed to benthopelagic during growth. Mysids, particularly Lophogaster typicus (%IPSRI = 34·51), were the main prey items of immature individuals, replaced by euphausiids, mainly Meganyctiphanes norvegica (%IPSRI = 13·19), in maturing fish. Crustaceans became less important in mature specimens, being replaced by molluscs (%IPSRI = 28·99) and teleosts (%IPSRI = 24·56). A concomitant increase of the TL was recorded (mean ± s.e. = 3·41 ± 0·44, 3·75 ± 0·54 and 4·28 ± 0·61 for immature, maturing and mature individuals). These feeding patterns ensured low levels of intraspecific competition. This study provides new information about the role that the D. oxyrinchus plays in the marine food chain and data now essential to formulate new and effective management plans for this species.  相似文献

We investigated mechanisms responsible for the formation of spatial patterns in a dominant macro-invertebrate, the burrowing amphipod Corophium volutator, in relation to tide pools on intertidal mudflats of the upper Bay of Fundy, Canada. A field survey of 3 different mudflats showed that density of C. volutator at low tide was consistently higher inside than outside tide pools, and a manipulative field experiment indicated that C. volutator selected tide pools over the adjacent emerged areas. Differential survival in immersed and emerged areas at low tide did not explain the observed pattern, because short-term survival of amphipods was not affected by immersion at low tide. As well, immigration rates of C. volutator into immersed and emerged areas at low tide were similar after one day, so preferential settlement did not explain aggregation of amphipods. However, marked C. volutator departed from experimental areas that were immersed at low tide at a slower rate compared to emerged experimental areas. Thus, formation of the spatial pattern observed in the field (higher densities inside tide pools) is likely the result of an effect of immersion at low tide on proportion of individuals emigrating from an area every day.  相似文献

Oxygen consumption rates of adult spring chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha increased with swim speed and, depending on temperature and fish mass, ranged from 609 mg O2 h?1 at 30 cm s?1 (c. 0·5 BL s?1) to 3347 mg O2 h?1 at 170 cm s?1 (c. 2·3 BL s?1). Corrected for fish mass, these values ranged from 122 to 670 mg O2 kg?1 h?1, and were similar to other Oncorhynchus species. At all temperatures (8, 12·5 and 17° C), maximum oxygen consumption values levelled off and slightly declined with increasing swim speed >170 cm s?1, and a third‐order polynomial regression model fitted the data best. The upper critical swim speed (Ucrit) of fish tested at two laboratories averaged 155 cm s?1 (2·1 BL s?1), but Ucrit of fish tested at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory were significantly higher (mean 165 cm s?1) than those from fish tested at the Columbia River Research Laboratory (mean 140 cm s?1). Swim trials using fish that had electromyogram (EMG) transmitters implanted in them suggested that at a swim speed of c. 135 cm s?1, red muscle EMG pulse rates slowed and white muscle EMG pulse rates increased. Although there was significant variation between individual fish, this swim speed was c. 80% of the Ucrit for the fish used in the EMG trials (mean Ucrit 168·2 cm s?1). Bioenergetic modelling of the upstream migration of adult chinook salmon should consider incorporating an anaerobic fraction of the energy budget when swim speeds are ≥80% of the Ucrit.  相似文献

Overharvest and habitat alteration have led toa collapse of most commercial Atlantic sturgeon(Acipenser oxyrinchus oxyrinchus)fisheries while pushing the species to rarityor extirpation in most of its historical range. A biologically sound conservation program forthis species requires knowledge of its geneticdiversity and of the evolutionary relationshipsamong geographic populations. To address theseresearch needs, six microsatellite loci wereisolated from A. o. oxyrinchus. Pedigreeanalysis suggested that all are inherited in acodominant Mendelian pattern. The six lociwere tested in ten additional sturgeon speciesfrom three genera and three apparent ploidylevels (4n, 8n, 16n). Approximately 70% ofsuccessful locus-species amplifications werepolymorphic. Polysomy was observed most oftenin 8n and 16n species. Genetic diversity andpopulation structure of A. o. oxyrinchuswere assayed using three polymorphic Aoxmarkers and four markers developed from lakesturgeon (A. fulvescens). A. o.oxyrinchus were sampled from the AltamahaRiver, Georgia, USA north to the St. LawrenceRiver, Quebec, Canada. Gulf sturgeon, A.o. desotoi, were sampled from the SuwanneeRiver, Florida, USA, to assess differentiationbetween the subspecies. Seventy-seven alleleswere observed to segregate into uniquemultilocus genotypes for each of the 392individuals assayed. Mean diversity wasgreatest in the Chesapeake Bay (9.7 alleles perlocus) and Delaware River (7.4 alleles perlocus) collections, and lowest in the St.Lawrence River (4.6 alleles per locus). Meanheterozygosity across seven loci ranged from44.3% (St. Lawrence River) to 62.6% (Altamaha River). Significant allelic heterogeneity wasobserved in 82% of pairwise comparisons aswell as a global test (p < 0.0001) for A.o. oxyrinchus collections. Genetic distancesuggests the presence of at least sixsubpopulations in A. o. oxyrinchus: St.Lawrence River, St. John River, Hudson River,Delaware River, Albemarle Sound, and AltamahaRiver. Genetic and geographic distances werepositively correlated (r = 0.57, p < 0.03) amongA. o. oxyrinchus, suggesting isolation bydistance and philopatry. Hierarchical genediversity analysis indicated significantgenetic population structure at every level. Maximum likelihood assignment tests correctlyassigned individual fish to collection with ahigh rate of success (mean = 87.5%); this andother lines of evidence indicated that theChesapeake Bay collection represents a mixedpopulation of sub-adult sturgeon from northernand southern Atlantic coast populations. Population structure was correlated with thatsuggested by earlier mitochondrial (mt) DNAanalyses. Significant diversity was observedbetween two Canadian populations from whichonly a single mtDNA haplotype has beenreported.  相似文献

Several studies have suggested that phytoplankton play a role in the iodine cycle. Using a short-term incubation technique for determining the uptake of iodate by phytoplankton, cultures of Thalassiosira oceanica Hasle, Skeletonema costatum (Greville) Cleve, Emiliania huxleyi (Lohmann) Hay and Mohler, and Dunaliella tertiolecta Butcher were found to be capable of assimilating iodate at rates ranging from 0.003 to 0.24 nmol IO3?·μg chlorophyll a?1·h?1. The kinetics for the uptake of iodate can be modeled, and the similarity between the model and experimental results suggests that there is a steady state between iodate uptake and release of dissolved iodine from the cells, presumably in the form of iodide. Two experiments were conducted in the Sand Shoal Inlet of the Cobb Bay estuary (37°15′N, 75°50′W). The uptake of iodate was 0.26 and 0.08 nmol IO3?·μg chlorophyll a?1·h?1 during high and low tide, respectively. Using field estimates based on measured levels of iodate in the estuary, we estimate that phytoplankton can take up as much as 3% of the ambient pool of iodate on a daily basis and the entire pool in about 1 month. Thus, phytoplankton can be a significant component of the global iodine cycle by mediating changes in the speciation of iodine in the marine environment.  相似文献

Atlantic sea scallops, Placopecten magellanicus, in most areas of the Bay of Fundy, New Brunswick, Canada, have year-round concentrations of paralytic shellfish posioning (PSP) toxins greater than the regulatory concentration of 80 μg STX eq. 100 g−1 wet weight. Scallops (mean shell height of 10.7 cm, age 3–5 years) were collected by SCUBA and individually tagged near Parker Island, Bay of Fundy. Half were hung 2 m below the low tide water level and the remainder were placed on the bottom (11 m depth at low tide) under the scallops held at 2 m. Scallop, water and sediment samples were collected monthly for determination of concentrations of PSP toxins and Alexandrium fundyense. In October, 1993, mean concentrations of PSP toxins in digestive gland, and mantle were 3205 and 1018 μg STX eq. 100 g−1 wet weight, respectively. Eight months later (June 1994), PSP concentrations in digestive glands from the surface and bottom had declined to 504 and 682 μg STX eq. 100 g−1 wet weight, respectively, whereas those in the mantle had declined to 802 and 681 μg STX eq. 100 g−1 wet weight. During July 1994, A. fundyense concentrations observed at Parker Island and offshore were 320 cells l−1 and 14,200 cells l−1, respectively. Subsequently, toxin concentrations in surface and bottom scallop digestive glands increased to 12,720 and 11,408 μg STX eq. 100 g−1 wet weight, whereas concentrations in mantles increased to 2126 and 1748 μg STX eq. 100 g−1 wet weight, respectively. Concentrations of PSP toxins in these tissues in October 1994 were similar to those measured in October 1993. Concentrations of PSP toxin were less than the regulatory concentration in the gonads and non-detectable in adductor muscles of all scallops sampled. There were no statistically significant differences in profiles for uptake and depuration of PSP toxins in scallops held at the surface compared to those from bottom, suggesting that A. fundyense cysts at the concentrations found in the sediment (45 cysts cm−3) did not contribute significantly to the year-round presence of PSP toxins within scallop tissues. The year-round occurrence of PSP toxin is probably due to accumulation during summer blooms followed by a very slow rate of depuration.  相似文献

Clinical hematology values were determined for 29 harbor porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) released from herring weirs in the Bay of Fundy, Canada. Erythrocyte values exhibited narrow ranges, but there was a high degree of individual variability in counts of white blood cells. Total white cell counts ranged from 2.6 to 15.5 ± 109/liter, with an overall mean of 6.5 ± 2.7 ± 10±/liter. There were significant differences among reproductive classes in mean values of total red blood cells, hematocrit (HCT), mean cell volume (MCV), mean cell hemoglobin (MCHC) and total monocyte count. Wild harbor porpoises had fewer white blood cells, lower relative total number of neutrophils and lymphocytes, and higher percentages of monocytes and eosinophils than reported in the literature for captive porpoises. Compared to published values for other odontocetes, the hemograms of harbor porpoises were most similar to those of Pacific white-sided dolphins (Lagenorhynchus acutus). These hematology data represent a baseline from free-ranging harbor porpoises that can be used as a reference for long-term monitoring of the health of this population and as a tool for rehabilitation facilities.  相似文献
