The bottlenose dolphin, genus Tursiops, is cosmopolitan occurring in tropical and temperate regions, with morphological variation between and within different oceans. Since the genus' taxonomy has been under discussion for a long time, this work aimed at analyzing the cranial variability of T. truncatus from different regions of the world. Geometric Morphometrics analyses were performed in 201 skulls of adult specimens, on dorsal, ventral, and lateral views, from the Eastern North Pacific, Eastern North Atlantic, Eastern South Atlantic, and Western South Atlantic oceans. The results indicate differences between individuals that inhabit the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Within the Atlantic Ocean, there is an evident longitudinal differentiation of specimens from the eastern and western regions. A latitudinal separation was also observed, considering specimens from the North and South Atlantic Ocean. In the Western South Atlantic statistical differences were found between two morphological groups, identified as T. gephyreus (sensu Lahille, 1908) and T. truncatus, and the cross-validation presented 98% as minimum confidence for correct classification of these two groups. The present study provides strong morphological support to consider these two lineages as separate species.  相似文献

Halacarid mites (Acari), with almost 700 species described, inhabit marine and freshwater habitats. The majority of genera are recorded from at least two ocean basins or continents. There is no evidence of endemic genera, in either littoral faunal provinces or in deep-sea regions. Copidognathus, a genus comprising 1/4 of all species described, is found in almost all geographic regions, depths and habitats. Other genera dominate or are restricted to cold waters, to warm waters or to distinct habitats.Corresponding habitats on either side of the boreal Atlantic Ocean harbour congeneric, identical, sibling or morphologically similar species. The fauna in the western Atlantic is less diverse than that in the eastern. Amphiatlantics are restricted to certain genera. Transatlantic distribution is independent of the niche inhabited.Of the marine halacarid species recorded from the boreal western Atlantic, 41% are amphiatlantics, while only one species is recorded from both the Caribbean and the Mediterranean. The Caribbean and the Mediterranean faunas are dominated by genera in which amphiatlantics are unknown.Most of the Black Sea species of the genus Halacarellus also occur in the Baltic, North Sea or North Atlantic, whereas the Copidognathus fauna of the Black Sea is similar to that of the Mediterranean.Halacarids are thought to be an ancient taxon, with most genera probably having been present since the Mesozoic and with several species having an age of at least 50 million years. Evidence for their antiquity is found in the distributional pattern of marine and limnic genera and species, in the lack of endemic genera despite low fecundity and lack of dispersal stages, and in the fact that amphiatlantics are restricted to certain genera without relationships to the niches inhabited.  相似文献

The basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus) is found in temperate waters throughout the world's oceans, and has been subjected to extensive exploitation in some regions. However, little is known about its current abundance and genetic status. Here, we investigate the diversity of the mitochondrial DNA control region among samples from the western North Atlantic, eastern North Atlantic, Mediterranean Sea, Indian Ocean and western Pacific. We find just six haplotypes defined by five variable sites, a comparatively low genetic diversity of pi=0.0013 and no significant differentiation between ocean basins. We provide evidence for a bottleneck event within the Holocene, estimate an effective population size (Ne) that is low for a globally distributed species, and discuss the implications.  相似文献

The rare opisthoproctid genus Bathylychnops has previously been regarded as containing a single species, B. exilis , known from the transition waters of the eastern North Pacific and, questionably, from the North Atlantic. While the post-larval and juvenile material reported here reaffirms the occurrence of the genus in the North Atlantic, and extends its range into the Indian Ocean, the lower vertebral and higher pelvic ray counts of specimens denies their reference to B. exilis. The systematics of the closely-related genus Dolichopteryx are poorly known, distinction from Bathylychnops resting mainly upon Dolichopteryx having multiserial, as opposed to uniserial, vomerine teeth and lacking an accessory scleral lens to the eye. The species D. brachyrhynchus , known from a single, damaged Atlantic specimen, shows marked similarities with Bathylychnops in pigmentation and the relative positions of fins, anus and dorsal adipose fin, thereby differing from all its congeners. Although the holotype of D. brachyrhynchus lacks an accessory scleral lens, perhaps through damage, it has uniserial vomerine teeth. This latter character and those of similarities in meristics, morphometrics and pigmentation shown with Atlantic-Indian Ocean Bathylychnops (contra B. exilis) are considered sufficient evidence to regard the two species as synonymous and hence transfer D. brachyrhynchus to the genus Bathylychnops.  相似文献

This study deals with the reproduction and development of the most common species of peanut worms from the Sea of Japan: Thysanocardia nigra, Themiste pyroides, and Phascolosoma agassizii. Data on the time of reproduction and larval settlement and the distribution of these species in Peter the Great Bay are provided. The peculiarities of gametogenesis, spawning, and embryonic, larval, and postlarval development are described. The reproductive biology of representatives of these species from the western and eastern Pacific is examined in a comparative aspect.  相似文献

Pygmy angelfishes (genus Centropyge) are widespread and species-rich in the Indo-Pacific, but only three species are recognized in the Atlantic: Centropyge resplendens on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Centropyge argi in the Caribbean, and Centropyge aurantonotus in Brazil and the southern Caribbean. Atlantic species are distinguished only by color patterns and are very similar to Centropyge acanthops (Cac) in the western Indian Ocean, raising the possibility that pygmy angelfish recently invaded the Atlantic Ocean via southern Africa. To test this zoogeographic hypothesis, we compared a 454-bp segment of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region among pygmy angelfishes of the subgenus Xiphypops, which includes the three Atlantic species, the Indian Ocean species, and an Indo-Pacific species [Centropyge fisheri (Cfi)]. The Indian Ocean species Cac is closest to the Atlantic species (d = 0.059) relative to Cfi (d = 0.077). The mtDNA genealogy indicates a colonization pathway from the Indian Ocean directly to the West Atlantic, followed by at least two waves of dispersal to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The gene tree for the three Atlantic species is polyphyletic, raising questions about taxonomic assignments based on color pattern. Mismatch distributions place Atlantic founder events and population expansions at about 250,000-500,000 years ago. Estimates of effective female population sizes from mismatch and coalescence analyses are consistent with founder events by tens of individuals in the western Atlantic, followed by expansions to several million individuals.  相似文献

An osteological study and a taxonomic diagnosis are presented for the mesopelagic, oviparous ophidioid fish genus Brotulataenia. Its relationships are probably with a large group of benthic deep-sea oviparous genera. Brotulataenia has been known previously from three North Atlantic specimens assigned to two species. The present study is based on 33 specimens from the North and South Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and the Indian Ocean, and placed in four species, two of which are described as new. Two species are excessively elongate and are interpreted as being derived forms; they are lighter in color than are the two short-bodied species and may live higher in the water column.  相似文献

The cupressaceous genus Tetraclinis is recognized from the Oligocene and Miocene of western North America on the basis of co-occurring seed cones, seeds, and foliage branches. Morphological and anatomical comparisons with the two previously recognized European Tertiary species indicate that the North American specimens are morphologically inseparable from Tetraclinis salicornioides (Unger) Kvacek. The North American taxon is treated as a new variety, T. salicornioides (Unger) Kvacek var. praedecurrens (Knowlton) comb. et stat. nov., and is distinguished from the European representatives, T. salicornioides (Unger) Kvacek var. salicornioides, by slight anatomical differences in the leaf epidermis. Although cones and seeds of the fossil species are closely similar to those of extant Tetraclinis articulata, the foliage is more "spreading," composed of flattened segments with fused facial and lateral leaves that are apparently adaptive for a more mesic climate. The recognition of T. salicornioides in western North America along with the absence of Tetraclinis in the fossil and recent flora of eastern Asia provide evidence for communication of the species across the North Atlantic during the early or middle Tertiary.  相似文献

An overview of the biogeography of the benthic marine algae of the North Atlantic Ocean is presented. General and specific distribution patterns are discussed in the light of current knowledge of extant species, and of known events in the evolution of the North Atlantic Ocean. The close relationships between the Arctic, NW and NE Atlantic floras suggest their possible origin as a single flora in the early Oligocene Arctic Ocean, when it was isolated by the Bering Land Bridge and the Greenland-Scotland Ridge. Migration of the flora into the North Atlantic Ocean could have occurred with the subsidence of the Greenland-Scotland Ridge. The present day distribution patterns are the main clue to unravelling the past, and study of vicariant amphi-Atlantic taxa using a variety of experimental techniques will yield the most valuable information in attempts to interpret major biogeographical events in the North Atlantic Ocean.  相似文献

Phylogenetic and paleontological analyses are combined to reveal patterns of species origination and divergence and to define the significance of potential and actual barriers to dispersal in Conus, a species-rich genus of predatory gastropods distributed throughout the world's tropical oceans. Species-level phylogenetic hypotheses are based on nucleotide sequences from the nuclear calmodulin and mitochondrial 16S rRNA genes of 138 Conus species from the Indo-Pacific, eastern Pacific, and Atlantic Ocean regions. Results indicate that extant species descend from two major lineages that diverged at least 33 mya. Their geographic distributions suggest that one clade originated in the Indo-Pacific and the other in the eastern Pacific + western Atlantic. Impediments to dispersal between the western Atlantic and Indian Oceans and the central and eastern Pacific Ocean may have promoted this early separation of Indo-Pacific and eastern Pacific + western Atlantic lineages of Conus. However, because both clades contain both Indo-Pacific and eastern Pacific + western Atlantic species, migrations must have occurred between these regions; at least four migration events took place between regions at different times. In at least three cases, incursions between regions appear to have crossed the East Pacific Barrier. The paleontological record illustrates that distinct sets of Conus species inhabited the Indo-Pacific, eastern Pacific + western Atlantic, and eastern Atlantic + former Tethys Realm in the Tertiary, as is the case today. The ranges of <1% of fossil species (N=841) spanned more than one of these regions throughout the evolutionary history of this group.  相似文献

Alaria (Alariaceae, Phaeophyceae) is a common genus of kelps generally found in the lower intertidal and shallow subtidal regions of rocky shores subject to strong wave exposure. Fourteen species are currently recognized, of which 11 are found in the cold–temperate North Pacific Ocean. Alaria esculenta (L.) Greville, the type species described from the North Atlantic, exhibits a range of biogeographically correlated morphotypes indicating the possibility of multiple species, subspecies, and/or hybrids. This has led to an unstable taxonomy. We compared five species from the Atlantic and Pacific, including six North Atlantic isolates of A. esculenta. Phylogenetic analyses based on Rubisco spacer sequences resulted in a well-resolved topology of these five species, but did not distinguish between the six biogeographic isolates of A. esculenta. Laboratory hybridization experiments among four A. esculenta isolates showed partial intrafertility. Among five tested Alaria species, interfertility as well as fertility barriers were encountered, inconsistent with reproductive isolation. The data reject both a biological and morphological species concept and support only a phylogenetic species concept for Alaria , demonstrating that morphological variation has evolved independently of molecular variation in the genes under investigation in the species of the genus Alaria.  相似文献

Sequence data derived from the mitochondrial DNA 16S rRNA and COI genes were used to determine the phylogenetic relationships among six Palinurus spiny lobster species. Three species (P. charlestoni, P. elephas, and P. mauritanicus) occur in the northeastern Atlantic/Mediterranean, and the others (P. barbarae, P. delagoae and P. gilchristi) inhabit the southwestern Indian Ocean. Parsimony and model based phylogenetics strongly supported the monophyly of the genus. A combined parsimony analysis based on 1001bp and 274 parsimony informative characters recovered the most resolved phylogeny with >70% bootstrap support for associations among species. The Atlantic P. charlestoni consistently clusters nested within the Indian Ocean clade, and the mtDNA sequence divergence between the two most distant species is 8.24%. If the northward collision of Africa with Eurasia in the Miocene caused the final physical separation between the Atlantic and Indian Ocean taxa, then the Palinurus mtDNA (COI and 16S combined) evolved no faster than 0.18% (lower bound) to 0.36% (upper bound) per lineage per million years. The six extant species occur in the pathways of the North Atlantic and South Indian Ocean gyres, and hypotheses on their radiation are developed relative to the strengthening of boundary currents in the Miocene and life history traits congruent with survival in strong ocean currents.  相似文献

Kinorhynchus phyllotropis sp.n., from Sydney Harbour, is the first species of the phylum Kinorhyncha to be described from Australian coasts. It appears to be most closely related to K. anomalus (Lang, 1953) from the Chilean coast and possibly, but to a lesser extent, to K. spinosus (Lang, 1949) from the Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic. Kinorhynchus anomalus is rede-scribed and, along with the new species, is compared with the South Atlantic species, the two species known from the Northeast Pacific and the remaining four members of this genus from the North Atlantic, Mediterranean Sea and Black Sea. Cateria styx Gerlach, 1956, is reported from beaches north of Valparaiso, Chile, the first report of this mesopsarnmic cryptorhagid kinorhynch from the Pacific Ocean.  相似文献

The wreckfish Polyprion americanus , a large [>1 m total length ( L T)] demersal teleost, is distributed globally in temperate waters, including both sides of the North and South Atlantic Oceans, the Mediterranean, the western South Pacific, and the southern Indian Ocean. Wreckfish spawn off the south-eastern U.S. on an area of the Blake Plateau (the Charleston Bump) characterized by an extensive ridge having approximately 100 m relief, in 450–600 m depths. Juvenile wreckfish (<60 cm L T) are pelagic and, in the North Atlantic, are not reported from the Blake Plateau fishing area, but occur in by-catch and fishery landings in the eastern Atlantic. Analysis of nine restriction fragment length profiles from a PCR-amplified fragment (∼1.5 kb) of the ND1 mitochondrial gene indicated no stock separation between eastern North Atlantic (Azores, Majorca, Madeira), and western North Atlantic (Blake Plateau) wreckfish. Restriction site differences separate western South Atlantic wreckfish from the North Atlantic; however, South Atlantic wreckfish share restriction-site similarities with western Pacific wreckfish that are not shared with North Atlantic wreckfish. North Atlantic circulation provides a mechanism for a long-lived pelagic stage to be dispersed from Blake Plateau spawning grounds to the eastern North Atlantic. Global circulation patterns may explain both the dispersal of mtDNA haplotypes and the disjunct distribution of wreckfish body lengths in a temperate, deep-water vagile species with an extended pelagic juvenile stage such as wreckfish.  相似文献

Parrotfishes of the genus Sparisoma (Scaridae) are ecologically important tropical reef fishes restricted to the Atlantic Ocean. We investigated phylogenetic relationships among the eight extant species within this genus using mitochondrially encoded 12S and 16S ribosomal genes. Our molecular data support the view that (i) Sparisoma originated approximately 14-35 million years ago (mya), probably in the tropical western Atlantic, off Brazil; (ii) there have been at least four discrete bouts of cladogenesis within the genus, with the most recent one ( approximately 2.8-5.6 mya) involving four events in both the east and the west Atlantic and across the Atlantic; and (iii) the genus invaded the eastern Atlantic on two different occasions, probably by at least two different routes. The data also offer support for Bellwood's ideas concerning the evolutionary changes in adult feeding patterns and habitat use within Scarids. Specifically, they support the evolutionary position of the ecological traits of Sparisoma as intermediate within the family.  相似文献

A new species of the macrourine genus Nezumia is described from specimens collected from the crest of Fieberling Guyot in the eastern North Pacific Ocean. The new species is distinguishable from all other Nezumia species chiefly on the basis of a high number of pelvic fin rays, a relatively high number of first dorsal fin soft rays, a steep blunt snout lacking scales ventrally, a relatively weak suborbital ridge, and a moderately long, thin barbel. Although possibly endemic to the Baja California Seamount Province, the new species appears to lack close relatives among the other Nezumia species of the eastern North Pacific Ocean. It might have arrived there either from a disjunct Tethyan distribution, thus retaining close relatives among the Atlantic Ocean species of Nezumia, or by way of stepping-stone dispersal from the Indo-west Pacific Ocean.  相似文献

Members of the subfamily Neothoracocotylinae are gastrocotylinean monogeneans on the gills of scombrid fishes of the genera Scomberomorus and Acanthocybium, and reportedly of a coryphaenid fish belonging to the genus Coryphaena. We revise the diagnosis of the subfamily and its two genera and accept only two species as valid. Neothoracocotyle acanthocybii (Meserve, 1938) Hargis, 1956 is known from Acanthocybium solandri throughout the Pacific Ocean and in the western Atlantic. N. coryphaenae (Yamaguti, 1938) Hargis, 1956, known only from a single specimen and described from Coryphaena hippurus in Japan, is synonymised with N. acanthocybii. The sole member of Scomberocotyle, S. scomberomori (Koratha, 1955) Hargis, 1956, infects five species of Scomberomorus in the eastern Pacific Ocean and the western and eastern Atlantic. We record this worm from several new hosts and/or localities, including S. sierra and S. concolor in the eastern Pacific (Mexico to Colombia), S. maculatus and S. cavalla in the western Atlantic (USA to Brazil), and S. tritor in the eastern Atlantic (Sierra Leone to Nigeria).  相似文献
