The influence of colonization in nested species subsets   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10
Biotic communities inhabiting collections of insular habitat patches often exhibit compositional patterns described as nested subsets. In nested biotas, the assemblages of species in relatively depauperate sites comprise successive subsets of species in relatively richer sites. In theory, nestedness may result from selective extinction, selective colonization, or other mechanisms, such as nested habitats. Allopatric speciation is expected to reduce nestedness. Previous studies, based largely on comparisons between land-bridge and oceanic archipelagos, have emphasized the role of selective extinction. However, colonization could also be important in generating strong patterns of nestedness. We apply a recently published index of nestedness to more than 50 island biogeographic data sets, and examine the roles of colonization, extinction, endemism, and, to a limited extent, habitat variability on the degree on nestedness. Most data sets exhibit a significant degree of nestedness, although there is no general tendency for land-bridge biotas to appear more nested than oceanic ones. Endemic species are shown to generally reduce nestedness. Comparisons between groups of non-endemic species differing in overwater or inter-patch dispersal ability indicate that superior dispersers generally exhibit a greater degree of nestedness than poorer dispersers, a result opposite that expected if colonization were a less predictable process than extinction. These results suggest that frequent colonization is likely to enhance nestedness, thereby increasing the compositional overlap among insular biotas. The prevalence of selective extinction in natural communities remains in question. The importance of colonization in generating and maintaining nested subsets suggests that (1) minimum critical areas will be difficult to determine from patterns of species distributions on islands; (2) multiple conservation sites are likely to be required to preserve communities in subdivided landscapes; and (3) management of dispersal processes may be as important to preserving species and communities as is minimizing extinctions.  相似文献

A rapid procedure is described for the separation of CMP-sialic acid:lactosylceramide sialyltransferase reaction components using Sep Pak C18 cartridges. The quantitative separation of the more polar nucleotide sugar, CMP-sialic acid, and its free acid from the less polar GM3-ganglioside is simple and rapid relative to previously described methods. Recovery of GM3 is optimized by the addition of phosphatidylcholine to the reaction mixture prior to the chromatographic step. Using rat liver Golgi membranes as a source of CMP-sialic acid: lactosylceramide sialyltransferase activity (GM3 synthase; ST-1), the transfer of [14C] sialic acid from CMP-[14C] sialic acid to lactosylceramide can be quantified by this assay. The procedure is reliable and may be applicable to the isolation of ganglioside products in otherin vitro glycosyltransferase assays.Abbreviations GM3 GM3-ganglioside - II3NeuAc-LacCer NeuAc2-3Gal1-4Glc1-1Cer - GD1a GD1a-ganglioside, IV3NeuAc, II3NeuAc-GgOse4Cer, NeuAc2-3Gal1-3GalNac1-4(NeuAc2-3)Gal1-4Glc1-1Cer - GD3 GD3-ganglioside, II3(NeuAc)2LacCer, NeuAc2-8NeuAc2-3Gal1-4Glc1-1Cer - GgOse4Cer asialo-GM1 Gal1-3GalNAc1-4Gal1-4Glc1-1Cer - FucGMI fucosyl-GMI-ganglioside, Fuc1-2Gal1-3GalNAc1-4Gal1-4 Glc1-1Cer - ST-1 GM3 synthase, CMP-sialic acid:lactosylceramide sialyltransferase - LacCer lactosylceramide, Gal1-4Glc1-1Cer - CMP-NeuAc cytidine 5-monophospho-N-acetylneuraminic acid - PC phosphatidylcholine - PMSF phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride  相似文献

A field experiment was conducted using ceramic plates as experimental substrates to describe the colonizing pattern of a stream invertebrate community after disturbance, and to ascertain the importance of colonizing ability for succession in a Japanese stream. We employed the simultaneous removal design in which plates were periodically set in place (1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32days before sampling) and all plates were sampled on the last day of the experiment, to diminish the influence of seasonal change in stream invertebrates. Total abundance and taxon richness reached a plateau after 4–16days of colonization. In contrast, the relative abundance of six common taxa and community structure changed throughout the 32days of colonization. Differences in the colonizing ability of the stream invertebrates were evident. Taxa with high mobility, such as the mayflies Baetis thermicus, Paraleptophlebia japonica, Cinygmula sp. and Drunella sachalinensis, colonized faster than those with low mobility (e.g. the caddisfly species Brachycentrus americanus and the chironomid midge Diamesinae spp.). The abundance of the most common taxon, Baetis, decreased at late stages of colonization, possibly because of low periphyton biomass. Consequently, we concluded that a difference in colonization ability among taxa is an important factor causing succession in stream invertebrate communities in local habitats.Shigeru Nakano - deceased 27 March 2000.  相似文献

Summary The helminth communities from ten species of lizard on seven islands in the Caribbean were sampled by collecting one hundred specimens of each species. Nine genera of parasites were identified; these included six nematodes, two digeneans and an acanthocephalan. No relationship was discernible between parasite density or abundance and island area or altitude, although dry islands tend to have fewer species of parasites. Anolis lizards of the bimaculatus and wattsi series share similar parasites with four out of nine species common to both series. The parasite community of lizards on these islands is depauperate with respect to similar surveys on the larger islands of the Greater Antilles. On three of the islands lizards were sub-sampled by collecting from moist woodland and more xeric habitats. These data suggest that differences between habitats are as significant as differences between islands in determining parasite burdens. Worm burdens of the commonest parasite species, T. cubensis, increased monotonically with host body size and no evidence was found to suggest that these parasites affect either host survival or fecundity. The sex-ratio of this species correlated with mean abundance of the parasite, with females the dominant sex on islands or in habitats where the parasite was common. This pattern may reflect haplodiploid sexual determination in this species.  相似文献

Nested species subsets are a common pattern in many types of communities found in insular or fragmented habitats. Nestedness occurs in some communities of ectoparasites of fish, as does the exact opposite departure from random assembly, anti-nestedness. Here, we looked for nested and anti-nested patterns in the species composition of communities of internal parasites of 23 fish populations from two localities in Finland. We also compared various community parameters of nested and anti-nested assemblages of parasites, and determined whether nestedness may result simply from a size-related accumulation of parasite species by feeding fish hosts. Nested parasite communities were characterised by higher prevalence (proportion of infected fish) and intensities of infection (number of parasites per fish) than anti-nested communities; the two types of non-random communities did not differ with respect to parasite species richness, however. In addition, the correlation between fish size and the number of parasite species harboured by individual fish was much stronger in nested assemblages than in anti-nested ones, where it was often nil. These results were shown not to be artefacts of sampling effort or host phylogeny. They apply to both assemblages of adult and larval parasites, which were treated separately. Since species of larval parasites are extremely unlikely to interact with one another in fish hosts, the establishment of nestedness appears independent of the potential action of interspecific interactions. The species composition of these parasite communities is not determined from within the community, but rather by the extrinsic influence of host feeding rates and how they amplify differences among parasite species in probabilities of colonisation or extinction. Nested patterns occur in parasite communities whose fish hosts accumulate parasites in a predictable fashion proportional to their size, whereas anti-nested communities occur in parasite communities whose fish hosts do not, possibly because of dietary specialisation preventing them from sampling the entire pool of parasite species available locally. Thus, nestedness in parasite communities may result from processes somewhat different from those generating nested patterns in free-living communities.  相似文献

Effects of zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) on populations of amphipods (Gammarus fasciatus) and prosobranch snails (Lithasia obovata) and on nutritional quality of benthic organic matter were examined in 20 artificial streams receiving Ohio River water and containing either mussels or small gravel. Twenty individually-marked snails were placed in each trough, and streams were allowed to colonize with other benthic species for 28 days.Dreissenids positively affected other benthic invertebrates in our stream channels. Compared to gravel channels, Gammarus biomass was significantly higher (P<0.01) in mussel channels, amphipod densities increased 300%, and snail growth rates were 50% greater. Food quality of fine benthic organic matter (FBOM) was greater in mussel channels (i.e. lower C:N), and FBOM was carbon depleted (lower 13C) but nitrogen enriched (higher 15N). Isotope data suggest that detrital FBOM was not the sole food source for snails and amphipods in our channels and that they were assimilating a higher quality portion of this BOM. The overall influence of dreissenids on particular benthic invertebrates may depend on the response and/or susceptibility of those species to biofouling, increased habitat heterogeneity, and changes in the quality and quantity of nutrients.  相似文献

We studied the structural organization of microbial decomposer communities by comparing patterns of genetic complexity over a template defined by site, season and detrital particle size. Epibenthic sediment samples were collected monthly from a Lake Erie coastal wetland and a small woodland stream, and sieved into five fine particulate organic matter (FPOM) size ranges: 1000–500 (500), 500–250 (250), 250–125 (125), 125–63 (63) and 63–38 (38) m. Whole community DNA-DNA hybridizations were used to compare the structural similarity of the microbial communities associated with each sample. Microbial community heterogeneity increased as particle size decreased, and declined from a summer maximum to a late winter minimum. Cluster analysis of hybridization scores partitioned the communities into two groups: one associated with the 500, 250 and 125 m fractions and a second with the 63 and 38 m fractions. The larger particles were easily recognized as comminuted plant detritus; the smaller particles were amorphous, presumably formed through the aggregation of dissolved organic carbon. This disjunction in particle morphology and microbial community diversity that occurs at about 100 m appears to delineate two trophic resources whose origin and fate may be largely independent.  相似文献

We used ultrasonic telemetry to examine movement patterns of 11 bat rays, Myliobatis californica, in Tomales Bay, California. Tomales Bay is long (20km) and narrow (1.4km), and is hydrographically separated into outer and inner bay regions. The outer bay (the outermost 8km) is characterized by oceanic conditions while the shallow inner bay (the innermost 12km) features wide seasonal temperature shifts. Five rays were tracked monthly from October 1990 to November 1991 and six rays (four of which carried temperature-sensing transmitters) were tracked daily from 30 June to 16 July 1992. Mean bat ray movement rate was 8.84mmin–1 (range 4.49 to 13.40mmin–1) and was not significantly affected by size (p=0.592), tidal stage (p=0.610), or time of day (p=0.327). Movement direction was unrelated to tidal stage (p=0.472) but showed a highly significant diel pattern (p<0.001). From 2:50–14:50h, rays moved toward the warmer and shallower inner bay, while from 14:50–2:50h they moved toward the cooler and deeper outer bay. These telemetry data, along with known bat ray foraging patterns and respiratory temperature-sensitivity, argue for behavioral thermoregulation as the primary influence on this movement pattern.  相似文献

Summary Flower visitation records were obtained for 192 species of bees and 138 species of wasps in three neotropical habitats. Four indices of feeding specialization were calculated for common species, and similar patterns were observed using each index. Variation in specialization could be attributed to several factors: the habitat and season in which species were found, the degree of sociality of species, and whether species were bees or wasps. Important differences among habitats and seasons were the number of coexisting consumer species and the species richness and phenology of resource plants. Differences in average consumer specialization among habitats and seasons may have been the result of differences in competitive pressures and to a lesser extent, differences in the flowering strategies of local plants. Eusocial bees and wasps were much more generalized in feeding than solitary species, and bees were more generalized than wasps. Bees in these neotropical communities were much less specialized than their north temperate counterparts. This pattern is reflected by the near absence of species that feed at only one or two plant species in Guanacaste, as compared to a very high frequency of these extreme specialist species in north temperate areas. Temperate zone species of bees have less even visitation rates to their resources than tropical bees. Consequently, temperate zone bees are more specialized in both the variety of plant species visited and the dominance of visitation to each set of resource plants. Several hypotheses are examined as possible explanations for this apparent qualitative difference in community structure between neotropical and temperate communities.  相似文献

In the 5–10-day old rat pups, in the course of simultaneous recording of ECG, respiration rate (RR), and spontaneous periodic motor activity (SPMA) there were determined parameters of the studied processes and their correlations at changes of levels of activity of adrenergic structures. As adrenoactive agents, the sympathomimetic amphetamine, - and -adrenolytics phentolamine and propranolol, as well as the dopamine receptor blocker haloperidol were used. It has been established that injection of amphetamine significantly increases intensity of the decasecond rhythm in the activity pattern of excitable structures. However, the action both on the - and -adrenoreceptors and on dopamine receptors produces no significant changes of this rhythm parameters. Based on this, it can be suggested that an increase of the decasecond rhythm is due to the ability of amphetamine to inhibit the pentose phosphate cycle activity. Administration of adrenolytics decreases RR and heart rate (HR). Amphetamine restores them by a simultaneous increase of pathological disturbances of the respiration rhythm, which appear at injections of sympatholytics. Blockade of dopamine receptors leads to replacement of motor activity fires by jerks following in the rhythm close to the previous one. As a rule, at the blockade of -adrenoreceptors the SPMA pattern is deprived of obvious rhythmic components, whereas at the blockade of -adrenoreceptors, they are preserved. Analysis of the obtained data indicates that the respiration frequency modulation that increases at action on adrenoreactive structures correlates with the motor activity changes. However, there are several peculiarities due to action on various types of adrenoreceptors. Of the leading significance in the normal intersystem interaction is preservation of balance between individual adrenergic structures.  相似文献

Population size distribution within a community of species with a competitive hierarchy, is studied. With the introduction of a stochastic model of invasion and extinction due to random environmental disturbance, the stationary population size distribution is derived as a function of the parameter, which denotes the ratio of rates of random extinction and invasion. From this result it is shown that the Shannon-type diversity takes the maximum value under the situation that 10 20 percent of habitat sites remain unoccupied, and the number of species also becomes maximum at intermediate levels of disturbance. The dynamical properties of a one-sided competitive system are also discussed by use of the Lotka-Volterra equations.  相似文献

Studies on the in vitro propagation of Alnus crispa, A. glutinosa, A. incana, A. japonica, A. rubra, A. sinuata and A. viridis indicated interspecific as well as intraspecific variations in their requirements for in vitro culture. The WPM and Blaydes media supported, respectively, growth of A. glutinosa and A. crispa but not that of both species, while the MS medium induced equal or significantly better growth than WPM and Blaydes media for both species. The optimum type and concentration of sugar to be used in the multiplication medium varied with species. Only A. glutinosa showed good growth on sucrose while glucose was optimum for all other species but at different concentrations. All species rooted in 3 weeks on half-strength MS medium including 1 M IBA. All clones of A. glutinosa and A. rubra rooted 100%, whereas easy-to-root and difficult-to-root clones were observed in the other species. In the rooting medium, glucose promoted rooting of the difficult-to-root clones better than sucrose. Survival following transfer to an artificial substrate was 100% for all species. Nodulation tests using pure cultures of two Frankia strains showed 100% nodulation on all Alnus clones.  相似文献

Local distributions of avian brood parasites among their host habitats may depend upon conspecific parasite density. We used isodar analysis to test for density-dependent habitat selection in brown-headed cowbirds (Molothrus ater) among tallgrass prairie adjacent to wooded edges, and prairie interior habitat (>100 m from wooded edges) with and without experimental perches. Eight study sites containing these three habitat treatments were established along a geographical gradient in cowbird abundance within the Flint Hills region of Eastern Kansas and Oklahoma, USA. The focal host species of our study, the dickcissel (Spiza americana), is the most abundant and preferred cowbird host in the prairie of this region. Cowbird relative abundance and cowbird:host abundance ratios were used as estimates of female cowbird density, whereas cowbird egg density was measured as parasitism frequency (percent of dickcissel nests parasitized), and parasitism intensity (number of cowbird eggs per parasitized nest). Geographical variation in cowbird abundance was independent of host abundance. Within study sites, host abundance was highest in wooded edge plots, intermediate in the experimental perch plots, and lowest in prairie interior. Cowbirds exhibited a pattern of density-dependent selection of prairie edge versus experimental perch and interior habitats. On sites where measures of cowbird density were lowest, all cowbird density estimates (female cowbirds and their eggs) were highest near (100 m) wooded edges, where host and perch availability are highest. However, as overall cowbird density increased geographically, these density estimates increased more rapidly in experimental perch plots and prairie interiors. Variation in cowbird abundance and cowbird:host ratios suggested density-dependent cowbird selection of experimental perch over prairie interior habitat, but parasitism levels on dickcissel nests were similar among these two habitats at all levels of local cowbird parasitism. The density-dependent pattern of cowbird distribution among prairie edge and interior suggested that density effects on perceived cowbird fitness are greatest at wooded edges. A positive relationship between daily nest mortality rates of parasitized nests during the nestling period with parasitism intensity levels per nest suggested a density-dependent effect on cowbird reproductive success. However, this relationship was similar among habitats, such that all habitats should have been perceived as being equally suitable to cowbirds at all densities. Other unmeasured effects on cowbird habitat suitability (e.g., reduced cowbird success in edge-dwelling host nests, cowbird despotism at edges) might have affected cowbird habitat selection. Managers attempting to minimize cowbird parasitism on sensitive cowbird hosts should consider that hosts in otherwise less-preferred cowbird habitats (e.g., habitat interiors) are at greater risk of being parasitized where cowbirds become particularly abundant.  相似文献

Null-point action spectra of the light-growth response were measured for three mutants of Phycomyces blakesleeanus (Burgeff) and compared with the action spectrum of the wild type (WT). The action spectrum for L150, a recently isolated night-blind mutant, differs from the WT spectrum. The L150 action spectrum has a depression near 450 nm and small alterations in its long-wavelength cutoff, the same spectral regions where its photogravitropism action spectrum is altered. This indicates that the affected gene product influences both phototropism and the light-growth response. For L85, a hypertropic (madH) mutant, the light-growth-response action spectrum is very similar to that of WT even though the photogravitropism action spectrum of L85 has been shown previously to be altered in the near-UV region. The affected gene product in this mutant appears to affect phototropic transduction but not light-growth-response transduction. The action spectrum of C110, a stiff (madE) mutant, differs significantly from the WT spectrum near 500 nm, the same spectral region where sporangiophores of madE mutants have been shown to have small alterations in second-derivative absorption spectra. This indicates that the madE gene product may be physically associated with a photoreceptor complex, as predicted by system-analysis studies.Abbreviations SE standard error of the mean - UV ultraviolet light - Wt wild type I dedicated to Masaki Furuya on the occasion of his 65th birthdayWe thank H. Background

Evolutionary history has provided insights into the assembly and functioning of plant communities, yet patterns of phylogenetic community structure have largely been based on non-dynamic observations of natural communities. We examined phylogenetic patterns of natural colonization, extinction and biomass production in experimentally assembled communities.

Methodology/Principal Findings

We used plant community phylogenetic patterns two years after experimental diversity treatments (1, 2, 4, 8 or 32 species) were discontinued. We constructed a 5-gene molecular phylogeny and statistically compared relatedness of species that colonized or went extinct to remaining community members and patterns of aboveground productivity. Phylogenetic relatedness converged as species-poor plots were colonized and speciose plots experienced extinctions, but plots maintained more differences in composition than in phylogenetic diversity. Successful colonists tended to either be closely or distantly related to community residents. Extinctions did not exhibit any strong relatedness patterns. Finally, plots that increased in phylogenetic diversity also increased in community productivity, though this effect was inseparable from legume colonization, since these colonists tended to be phylogenetically distantly related.

Conclusions

We found that successful non-legume colonists were typically found where close relatives already existed in the sown community; in contrast, successful legume colonists (on their own long branch in the phylogeny) resulted in plots that were colonized by distant relatives. While extinctions exhibited no pattern with respect to relatedness to sown plotmates, extinction plus colonization resulted in communities that converged to similar phylogenetic diversity values, while maintaining differences in species composition.  相似文献

The time to the most recent common ancestor of the extant populations of Plasmodium falciparum is controversial. The controversy primarily stems from the limited availability of sequences from Plasmodium reichenowi, a chimpanzee malaria parasite closely related to P. falciparum. Since the rate of nucleotide substitution differs in different loci and DNA regions, the estimation of genetic distance between P. falciparum and P. reichenowi should be performed using orthologous sequences that are evolving neutrally. Here, we obtained full-length sequences of two housekeeping genes, sarcoplasmic and endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+-ATPase (serca) and lactate dehydrogenase (ldh), from 11 isolates of P. falciparum and 1 isolate of P. reichenowi and estimate the interspecific genetic distance (divergence) between the two species and intraspecific genetic distance (polymorphism) within P. falciparum. Interspecific distance and intraspecific distance at synonymous sites of interspecies-conserved regions of serca and ldh were 0.0672±0.0088 and 0.0011±0.0007, respectively, using the Nei and Gojobori method. Based on the ratio of interspecific distance to intraspecific distance, the time to the most recent common ancestor of P. falciparum was estimated to be (8.30±5.40) × 104 and (11.62±7.56) × 104 years ago, assuming the divergence time of the two parasite species to be 5 and 7 million years ago, respectively. This article contains an online supplementary table.Reviewing Editor: Dr. Martin Kreitman  相似文献

As assessed by the IUCN Mace–Lande system, seven (35%) of the 20 Alouatta species and subspecies with adequate data are classified as threatened, i.e., critically endangered, endangered, or vulnerable (Rylands et al., 1995). This percentage is much lower than the 75 to 100% threatened taxa for the other large-bodied genera: Ateles, Lagothrix, and Brachyteles. Only 5 of the 16 Neotropical genera have lower percentages of threatened taxa than that of Alouatta: Cebuella, Pithecia, Saguinus, Saimiri, and Cebus. The threatened howler taxa occupy small distributions in areas of forest fragmentation. In general, populations are most affected by major habitat disturbance, such as total deforestation and flooding from dam construction, and by human hunters. Facilitated by their ability to exploit folivorous diets in small home ranges, howlers can tolerate considerable habitat fragmentation but not the increased exposure to hunting that may accompany it. Howlers seem particularly vulnerable to yellow fever and bot fly parasitism. Although the former threat may decrease by increasing fragmentation of the habitat, other sorts of parasitism may increase in disturbed habitats. The low genetic variability of the Central American howlers suggests a resistance to inbreeding depression potentially experienced during population bottlenecks. Greater between-population variability may still exist. Although howlers are not readily bred in captivity, they respond well to translocation. Translocation has been successfully achieved for 4 howler species and is a viable option for introducing new genetic variability into population fragments and repopulating areas from which howlers are extinct. Their pattern of bisexual dispersal facilitates colonization of regenerating habitats, and in suitable, protected habitats they have shown the capacity for strong population recovery.  相似文献

The guild of cosmopolitan Drosophila coexist almost worldwide and yet the mechanisms that underlie this coexistence are unknown. The larval resource of the guild is decaying fruit and vegetables, but the species show little specialization and can coexist on a single resource, such as oranges. In southern California the guild includes D. simulans (SIM), D. melanogaster (MEL), D. pseudoobscura (OBS), D. immigrans (IMM), D. hydei (HYD) and D. busckii (BUS). These species show consistent differences in their colonization of decaying organges, differences that may promote their coexistence. This study tested whether the colonization pattern of a species is determined primarily by attraction to specific resource types (decayed or fresh organges), by ability to colonize new resource patches, or by dependence on a successional sequence of Drosophila species. The experiments compared oranges that were pre-aged prior to a colonization period and showed that the colonization pattern of each species (except OBS) was driven primarily by its decay-dependent attraction to oranges. While OBS exhibited a pattern of colonization independent of pre-aging, the remaining species all showed some preference for older (7-day pre-aged) over fresh oranges. Their overall pattern of attraction, ordered by high relative abundance on fresher organges, was SIM>MEL=IMM>HYD=BUS. BUS, a specialist on decaying plant material, was the only species that showed a preference for 11-day over 7-day oranges. Pre-aging the oranges under covers, to prevent prior colonization by Drosophila, did not change the interspecific pattern of colonization, indicating that microbial decay was driving the changes in attraction. The patterns of attraction separated two ecologically similar pairs (SIM from MEL; IMM from HYD) and published data on ethanol tolerance show that, in each pair, the earliest colonizer has the lower tolerance. This suggests an important interplay between colonization patterns and physiological optima.  相似文献

The effect of manipulation of between-habitat dispersal rates in multiple patch systems was examined experimentally using protist communities in laboratory microcosms. Replicate landscapes of eight microcosms (patches) at two spatial scales (patch sizes) were inoculated with 13 species of protists. Dispersal was carried out by transferring a small random sample of medium and protists from one randomly selected microcosm to another within a landscape. Four dispersal rates (24, 6, 2 and 0 transfers very 3 days) were used, and the microcosms were sampled after 6 and 12 weeks. Patch size had a consistent effect on within-path (community) and within-landscape (metacommunity) diversity, both being lower in small patch systems. Higher dispersal rates had a slight effect on community and metacommunity diversity after 12 weeks, with a tendency for higher dispersal to slightly offset the rate of loss of species. Both dispersal and patch size had effects on the abundance of many individual species, though in a variety of ways. The individual species results suggest that extinction is selective with respect to both patch size and dispersal rate treatments, and may be influenced by species interactions. It seems likely that in metacommunity systems of this sort, rather than mainland-island systems, the potential effect of between-patch dispersal rate in rescuing and recolonizing where local extinctions occur may be much reduced by the effect of selective extinction, relative to that expected under the assumption of random extinction.  相似文献

Amyloid beta-protein (A) is the major constituent of amyloid fibrils composing -amyloid plaques and cerebrovascular amyloid in Alzheimer's disease (AD). We studied the effect of metal cations on preformed fibrils of synthetic A by Thioflavin T (ThT) fluorescence spectroscopy and electronmicroscopy (EM) in negative staining. The amount of cross beta-pleated sheet structure of A 1–40 fibrils was found to decrease by metal cations in a concentration-dependent manner as measured by ThT fluorescence spectroscopy. The order of defibrillization of A 1–40 fibrils by metal cations was: Ca2+ and Zn2+ (IC50 = 100 M) > Mg2+ (IC50 = 300 M) > Al3+ (IC50 =1.1 mM). EM analysis in negative staining showed that A 1–40 fibrils in the absence of cations were organized in a fine network with a little or no amorphous material. The addition of Ca2+, Mg2+, and Zn2+ to preformed A 1–40 fibrils defibrillized the fibrils or converted them into short rods or to amorphous material. Al3+ was less effective, and reduced the fibril network by about 80 % of that in the absence of any metal cation. Studies with A 1–42 showed that this peptide forms more dense network of fibrils as compared to A 1–40. Both ThT fluorescence spectroscopy and EM showed that similar to A 1–40, A 1–42 fibrils are also defibrillized in the presence of millimolar concentrations of Ca2+. These studies suggest that metal cations can defibrillize the fibrils of synthetic A.  相似文献
