Many studies have seemingly demonstrated that anonymous individuals who are shown artificial cues of being watched behave as if they are being watched by real people. However, several studies have failed to replicate this surveillance cue effect. In light of these mixed results, we conducted two meta-analyses investigating the effect of artificial observation cues on generosity. Overall, our meta-analyses found no evidence to support the claim that artificial surveillance cues increase generosity, either by increasing how generous individuals are, or by increasing the probability that individuals will show any generosity at all. Therefore, surveillance cue effects should be interpreted cautiously.  相似文献

Growth, survival, fecundity, and nutrition of Tirathaba rufivena (Walker) fed on two artificial and one natural diet were studied at 29±1°C and 75±5% relative humidity. Larvae reared on the two artificial diets showed faster growth and development, higher pupal survival and weight, and higher adult fecundity than those reared on a natural diet of young coconuts, Cocos nucifera L. The relative growth rate, efficiency of ingested food conversion, and efficiency of digested food conversion in larvae fed on artificial diets were significantly higher than those of larvae fed on young coconuts. The relative consumption rate of larvae fed on artificial diets was significantly lower than that of larvae fed on young coconuts. T. rufivena showed no significant degradation in ability to propagate after being reared on the artificial diet for five successive generations. These results indicated that two artificial diets are suitable for mass rearing of T. rufivena.  相似文献

Addition of alcohols to cytochrome P450cam (CYP101) was shown to release the substrate camphor from the heme pocket of the enzyme. The release of the substrate was found to be caused both due to increased solubility of the substrate in solution in presence of alcohol and due to change in the tertiary structure of the active site of the enzyme. The far-UV CD and near-UV CD spectra reveal that addition of alcohols to cytochrome P450cam cause a small change in the secondary structural elements but a significant change in the tertiary structural organization of this enzyme. The CD spectra at the heme region at various concentrations of alcohols indicate a substantial change in the tertiary structural organization around the heme moiety too. The equilibrium constant associated with the binding of camphor to Cyt P450cam is strongly dependent on the concentration of alcohols and the corresponding free energy associated with the binding is found to scale linearly with the concentration of alcohols. Kinetic experiments on binding of camphor to Cyt P450cam show that both k(on) and k(off) rate constants are strongly affected by addition of alcohols suggesting that alcohol expel camphor out of the heme cavity of Cyt P450cam by affecting tertiary structure of Cyt P450cam as well as by modifying the solubility properties of camphor in aqueous medium.  相似文献

The response of lambs to vaccination and challenge with Trichostrongylus colubriformis: effect of plane of nutrition on, and the inter-relationship between, immunological responsiveness and resistance. International Journal for Parasitology14: 39–44. Merino lambs weaned at 8 weeks of age were fed either ground and pelleted (high plane, HP) or chopped (low plane, LP) lucerne hay ad libitum to achieve an approximate 2-fold difference in liveweight gain. When aged 17 and 21 weeks, 15 of the 20 lambs in each diet group were vaccinated with 80,000 irradiated T. colubriformis larvae. At 25 weeks, vaccinated and unvaccinated lambs were treated with anthelmintic and one week later challenged with 30,000 normal larvae. Four weeks after challenge the animals were killed for worm counts. After vaccination HP lambs had higher titres of antibodies to the parasite and after challenge had lower worm egg outputs, and lower worm burdens than LP lambs. Immunological responsiveness (serum titre of complement-fixing antibodies against worm antigen) and manifestations of resistance (eggs produced per female worm per day and percent protection calculated from worm counts) were significantly correlated within dietary groups. Percent protection and egg production per female worm were highly correlated (r = ?0.81) in individual animals pooled over dietary groups, suggesting that both manifestations of resistance respond to essentially the same immunological mechanism. Failure to obtain significant correlation between weight gain pre-vaccination and immunological and resistance parameters indicated that animal production and resistance to infection are not genetically linked. Negative correlation of weight gain during the vaccination period with serum antibody titre at challenge suggests that the developing immune response competes with weight gain for limited physiological resources of the animal.  相似文献
