The majority (75%) of femaleParastrachia japonensis (Hemiptera: Cydnidae), while caring for 1st and 2nd instar nymphs, foraged for and provisioned nests with drupes of the host plant,Schoepfia jasminodora (Olacacae), which the young then fed on. The maximum number of drupes found in a given nest was 27. Females could travel as fast as 61.4 cm/min while carrying drupes that were nearly double their weight, and were directly observed to travel as far as 10 m when encumbered with a drupe. It was found that nests which were far from the food source were provisioned with at least as many drupes as those nests that were within the drupe range. While females could not distinguish their own eggs from others, apparently they could distinguish their own nests containing their nymphs. Eggs failed to survive in the absence of a female, however, a small number of nymphs reached adulthood even in the absence of a female when drupes were provided. This report represents the first direct observation of progressive provisioning by a phytophagous hemipteran under field conditions.  相似文献

The behavior of females of the damselflyMnais pruinosa was observed in the breeding season. Males consisted of both territorial (esakii) and non-territorial (strigata) types in the study area. Females sometimes arrived at a stream for mating and oviposition. The staying time of females in the stream was 1–3 hours, while that of males was 5–8 hours. The proportion of the males that copulated with the females did not differ between the two male forms present in the stream. In the Calopterygidae, of which the females usually perform multiple copulation, oviposition without subsequent recopulation is considered to be advantageous for a mated male in order to avoid the risk of sperm displacement. From such a viewpoint, the time spent for oviposition was measured for females that arrived at the stream after copulation with different male forms. The ratio was 69.1: 11.5–30.9 betweenesakii andstrigata males. Assuming that the oviposition time is proportional to the number of fertilized eggs laid, this ratio would represent the relative reproductive success of the two male forms. In fact, the relative abundance of the two male forms was also biased in favor ofesakii males (61.7:38.3) in this population. The mechanism of coexistence of the two male forms is discussed in relation to their reproductive success.  相似文献

Nymphs of the univoltine shield bug, Parastrachia japonensis grow by feeding on the drupes of their sole food plant, which are available for only 2 weeks a year. The new adults soon enter a reproductive diapause and survive without feeding for at least 10 months up to 2 years. Uric acid was found to be the predominant component among four waste nitrogenous compounds, i.e., uric acid, allantoin, allantoic acid and urea in the body of both nymphs and adults in all stages, and to be predominantly excreted by the nymphs and reproductive adults. However, adults in diapause excreted negligible amounts of these compounds. Erwinia-like bacteria were found exclusively in the cecum of midgut, in which three uricolytic enzymes, i.e., uricase, allantoinase and allantoicase were detected. Ninety % of adults in diapause could survive on water for 9 months, but those given 0.02% rifampicin aqueous solution all died within this period, with significant reduction of the bacteria and uricase activity in the cecum. Rifampicin treatment resulted in a considerable reduction of free amino acids, especially proline in the hemolymph. These results suggest that uric acid is recycled as an amino acid source with the aid of Erwinia-like bacteria, and uricase functions as a key enzyme for this process.  相似文献

Females of Parastrachia japonensis (Hemiptera: Cydnidae) provision nymph-containing nests with drupes of the single host tree, Schoepfia jasminodora (Rosidae: Santales). P. japonensis feeds on the endosperm of these drupes. Foraging females approached and accepted only a few selected drupes for transport to their nests from among the hundreds of drupes scattered on the ground. The characteristics of the drupes that elicited an acceptance response under field conditions were examined. Females estimated the degree of endosperm development using volatile and nonvolatile chemicals in the outer skin as cues and selected only those drupes which had a well-developed endosperm. Although the cues that prompted approach and inspection of a drupe are in the fleshy outer skin, females presented with various substitute drupes coated with outer skin juices of acceptable drupes selected only those they could recognize as a solid mass, suggesting that they used volatile chemicals in the outer skin as cues for approaching and inspecting a drupe and then taste and tactile stimuli as cues for acceptance. Thus, this bug possesses a complex, ecologically sensitive cognitive system that enables it to recognize valuable food items by using reliable cues. The importance of selective foraging by P. japonensis females and the evolutionary significance of this behavior are discussed.  相似文献

The association between social rank, mating effort, and reproductive success of male Barbary macaques (Macaca sylvanus) has been evaluated by longterm behavioral observations and subsequent paternity determination via oligonucleotide DNA fingerprinting in a large semifreeranging group. All offspring born between 1985 and 1988 that survived to at least 1 year of age (n=75) were available for paternity testing. The exclusion of all but one of the potential fathers from paternity was possible in 70 cases (93%). Mating activities were recorded using ad lib. and focal female sampling techniques. The analysis of male mating effort was restricted to the most likely days of conception. Male rank correlated significantly with male mating success in all four breeding seasons and with male reproductive success in three of the four seasons. Mating success and reproductive success also showed a significant correlation, with the exception of one breeding season, in which the proportion of males per fertilizable female was especially high. Poor mating success was almost always associated with poor reproductive success, while good mating success was less predictive for a male's actual reproductive success. This was apparently a consequence of sperm competition, resulting from the promiscuous mating system. Male mating success is not necessarily an unreliable indicator for reproductive success, provided that sufficient sample sizes are available and that conception periods can be determined. Sperm competition and other factors may weaken the association, however.  相似文献

Summary This paper examines the correlates of individual size, reproductive success, gonadal allocation, and growth in a hermaphroditic reef fish. Individuals in S. fasciatus mature as simultaneous hermaphrodites; large individuals subsequently lose female function and become functional males. Daily female reproductive success was highly correlated with both hermaphrodite size and amount of female gonadal tissue. Three separate comparisons gave a positive correlation between male reproductive success and male gonadal allocation: (1) Males had higher levels of male gonadal allocation and male reproductive success than hermaphrodites. (2) The percent of gonad allocated to male tissue in hermaphrodites was higher in the year they had higher male mating success. (3) Male gonadal tissue of hermaphrodites was positively correlated with male reproductive success in the year that male reproductive success by hermaphrodites was higher and more variable. There was no evidence for a trade-off between male function, female function, and growth among hermaphrodites. Many of these patterns have also been observed in plants, but the selective pressures leading to these patterns in S. fasciatus and plants are probably quite different.  相似文献

Males of the Japanese goby Rhinogobius sp. OR (orange type) establish nests under stones in streams. They provide care to egg masses until hatching. We carried out field observations and a field experiment in a natural stream to examine the effect of male body size on brooding success. An experiment excluding guarding males indicated that their presence has a positive effect on nest defense. Field data showed that male body size was positively correlated with the size of the egg mass that was initially found at the nest. Furthermore, a sequential increase in egg mass size seen in the nests of larger males indicated that multiple females spawned during a single breeding cycle of larger males. To examine male brooding success, two dependent variables, egg mass persistence (days from initial egg mass to disappearance or hatching) and hatching success were analyzed. The results indicated that the variation found in both dependent variables was significantly explained by two independent variables, namely, initial egg-mass size and the number of matings. It is also suggested that male body size indirectly influenced brooding success through positive correlations with these independent variables.  相似文献

Summary Males of the melon flyDacus cucurbitae mate with females for 10 hours or more, usually starting at dawn and terminating at dusk. We tested the sperm-loading hypothesis (Dickinson, 1986) that males remaining with females for long periods of time benefit by numerically overwhelming the sperm of their competitors. The amount of sperm transferred to a female increased with time after mounting. The number of feamles which laid eggs at least once during experimental periods was positively correlated with mating duration. Oviposition rate was positively correlated with mating duration, as well. Egg hatchability was not influenced by mating duration. Mating duration was a major determinant of paternity when females were doubly mated with one male for 6 hours and another male for 2 hours. Females whose first matings were longer showed first male sperm predominance, while females whose second matings were longer showed last male sperm predominance. The adaptive significance of prolonged mating by male melon flies is discussed.  相似文献

Tibial combs in representatives of the family Cydnidae are described in detail for the first time. The structure was studied in 98 species of 58 genera representing all the subfamilies, among them 16 species were investigated using scanning electron microscopic (SEM) techniques. In addition, Parastrachia japonensis (Scott, 1880) of the family Parastrachiidae, and two species of Dismegistus Amyot and Serville, 1843 (a genus of uncertain systematic position within Pentatomoidea) have also been studied. Morphological terminology is proposed for all the structures connected with tibial combs and the term 'the tibial comb complex' is suggested; its functional, taxonomic and phylogenetic significance is also discussed. The genera of Cydnidae can be classified into two groups depending on differences in the tibial comb complex, when it is present; moreover, its absence in the tribe Scaptocorini (Cephalocteinae) is demonstrated for the first time and is regarded as an autapomorphy of this tribe. Data on the occurrence of tibial combs in other families of true bugs (Hemiptera: Heteroptera) are also briefly reviewed, and an anagenetic trend in their evolution in terrestrial Heteroptera is hypothesized. The presence of tibial combs on all legs is regarded as the most plesiomorphic state.  相似文献

The mating strategy of Halicarcinus cookii was investigated to ascertain how males maximised their fitness through mate choice. An intertidal population at Kaikoura, New Zealand, was dominated by mature crabs of both sexes in summer and by immature crabs in the colder months. More than 95% of mature females were ovigerous with early stage and late stage broods found in almost every month, indicating that egg production and larval release is continuous. The operational sex ratio was less than 1 male/female in summer, but often more than 1.0 in the colder months. The gonosomatic index increased along with brood development so that as soon as zoeae were released, the next clutch of eggs was ready to be fertilised. Males searched for receptive females and began pre-copulatory mate guarding without any courtship display. They mated preferentially with late stage or non-ovigerous females: copulation duration was longest for stage 5 females as was post-copulatory guarding (mean 18.3 h). Late stage females were up to 14% of the female population. Mate attraction seems to be the result of an ovarian signal rather than from the developing brood. Manipulation of the sex ratio had effects upon copulation duration and post-copulatory guarding: presence of a rival male increased duration of guarding. Females showed precocious mating in the penultimate instar and were able to lay fertilised eggs after their pubertal moult in the absence of males. H. cookii females have many mates, but males attempt to ensure paternity by preferentially pursuing mature females close to egg laying and by guarding these females after copulation. These behaviours are all elements of a competitive strategy to ensure that a male loses (not wins) the race to copulate because females have a ventral seminal receptacle, giving sperm precedence to the last male to mate. Male mating behaviour is a consequence and evolutionary response to female morphology.  相似文献

Post-copulatory episodes of sexual selection can be a powerful selective force influencing the reproductive success of males. In order to understand variation in male fertilisation success, we first need to consider the pattern of sperm utilisation by females following matings with more than one male. Second, we need to study those traits responsible for male success in sperm competition. Here we study both male sperm transfer characteristics as well as offspring paternity of females mated to two males in the scorpionfly Panorpa cognata. By repeatedly mating males to virgin females and interrupting copulation at defined time points, we found for all males that sperm transfer set off after approximately 40 min. During the remaining copulation, sperm transfer of individual males was continuous and with constant rate. Yet the rate of sperm transfer differed between individual males from about one sperm per minute to more than eight sperm per minute for the most successful males. In addition, we measured the fertilisation success in sperm competition of males with known sperm transfer capability. The relative number of sperm transferred by males during copulation, estimated from copulation duration and the males’ individual sperm transfer rate, explained a large proportion of variation in offspring paternity. The mode of sperm competition in this species, thus, conforms largely to a fair raffle following complete mixing of sperm prior to fertilisation. Hence, male differences in both the ability to copulate for long and of rapid sperm transfer will translate directly into differences in reproductive success.  相似文献

In the last decades, many insect species have been studied in terms of sperm competition. Patterns of sperm use are often inferred from the mean species value of P(2), defined as the mean proportion of offspring sired by the second male in double-mating trials. In Panorpa germanica (Mecoptera, Panorpidae), P(2) largely depends on relative copulation durations of both males, but with the second male on average having some advantage over the first male. Estimating the presence of fertile sperm inside the female's reproductive tract in relation to time after copulation we conclude this partial last male sperm precedence not to be caused by natural death, loss, or depletion of first male sperm. Estimating sperm transfer rates of both mates of a female we, furthermore, found that the high intraspecific variance in P(2) that can be observed cannot solely be explained by variances in sperm transfer rates among P. germanica males. Other factors possibly causing the observed patterns of paternity success are discussed.  相似文献

Although age-based effects on the reproductive success of males have been reported in several animal taxa the cost of aging on male mating success in lekking species has not been fully explored. We used the Mediterranean fruit fly, a lekking species, to investigate possible cost of aging on male reproductive success. We performed no choice and choice mating tests to test the hypothesis that aging does not affect the mating performance (mating success in conditions lacking competition) or the mating competitiveness (mating success against younger rivals) of males. The mating probability of older males decreased significantly when competing with younger males. Aging gradually reduced the mating performance of males but older males were still accepted as mating partners in conditions lacking competition. Therefore, older males are capable of performing the complete repertoire of sexual performance but fail to be chosen by females in the presence of young rivals. Older males achieved shorter copulations than younger ones, and female readiness to mate was negatively affected by male age. Older and younger males transferred similar amount of spermatozoids to female spermathecae. Females stored spermatozoids asymmetrically in the two spermathecae regardless the age of their mating partner. Aging positively affected the amount of spermatozoids in testes of both mated and nonmated males. No significant differences were observed on the amount of spermatozoids between mated and nonmated males.  相似文献

Subsocial burrower bugs (Heteroptera: Cydnidae) provide unique opportunities to investigate evolutionary ecological questions regarding parental provisioning and family dynamics. Observations and marked nutlet‐setting experiments in the field showed that Adomerus triguttulus females progressively delivered mint nutlets into nests harbouring nymphs under the litter. More than one female often attended nymphs, but not eggs, in a nest in the field. The number of nymphs aggregating in a nest with a single female was usually smaller than that in a nest with two females, suggesting the joining of different families and facultative joint parental care. There was a positive correlation between the number of nutlets delivered and the number of nymphs in a nest. The number of attendant females also affected the amount of provisioning; more nutlets were found for second‐instar broods with more females. The effect of brood size on provisioning was confirmed for families under laboratory rearing. Maternal provisioning also varied with the developmental stage of offspring; second‐instar broods received more nutlets than first‐instar broods, with a temporal decrease in provisioning during the moulting of nymphs. Considering the growing evidence of food solicitation signals of young in subsocial insects, the observed finely tuned supply of food by the female could be induced by begging signals from the nymphs.  相似文献

Male soapberry bugs (Jadera haematoloma)face severe mating competition at the northern edge of their range due to male-biased adult sex ratios. Copulations lasting up to 11 days may serve a mate guarding function (encompassing four or more ovipositions), but copulation duration is highly variable, with some pairings lasting as little as 10 min. Data were gathered to describe factors that influence the reproductive costs and benefits of prolonged copulation. Estimated copulation durations (mean ± SD) were 20 ± 23 h in the lab and 50 ± 8 h in the field and were only weakly affected by sex ratio. Females mated for 5 min produced as many fertile eggs as those mated for 600 min laid; they became depleted of fertile sperm after about 25 days. In twicemated females, the first male's paternity was reduced by about 60%, and all females (N = 13) whose mates were removed experimentally mated again within an average of 6 min. The outcome of sperm competition on a perclutch basis was not highly predictable. The possibility of increased sperm displacement in longer copulations was not tested. Males often guarded females during oviposition and successfully defended them from intruding single males by recopulating. Such intrusions occurred in the majority of oviposition attempts observed in nature. Even though most females mated promiscuously, in a focal aggregation with a mean sex ratio of 2.2 ± 0.4 males/female, the interval between matings by males was commonly several days. Males appeared to respond facultatively to several aspects of the distribution and availability of females. The intensities of mating competition and sperm competition indicate that monogamous mate guarding should be favored over nonguarding in nature. Unpredicted brief. pairings may result from assessment by males of female reproductive value or of their own physical condition, or from female resistance.  相似文献

Subsocial behavior or postovipositional parental care in insects has evolved in response to a variety of environmental stresses and ranges from briefly guarding eggs after oviposition to elaborate nidification and provisioning behaviors. Investment in parental care bears various costs, and should not continue beyond the point at which the costs to future reproductive success exceed the benefits to current reproductive effort. Progressive provisioning is a rare form of subsociality in insects. Females of the subsocial shield bug Parastrachia japonensis progressively provision their nymph-containing nests with drupes of the single resource, Schoepfia jasminodora, and this provisioning drastically enhances offspring survival. A female rears only one brood throughout her lifetime and continues provisioning the brood until about the third larval stadium, when the female dies. Thus, the female's entire reproductive effort is expressed in the success of that one brood, which suggests a reproductive strategy with enormous costs and risks. Why has such an extreme life history evolved in this species? Here, to answer that question and to contribute to our understanding of the evolutionary implications of subsocial behavior, in particular, progressive provisioning, we review what we have discovered about the ecological parameters of subsociality in this species during a long-term field study. We also discuss these parameters in P. japonensis in reference to other subsocial insects and related species and conclude with a suggestion that semelparity and progressive provisioning in this species are extreme adaptations to evolving complete dependency on an unreliable resource.  相似文献

In insects, a sexual size dimorphism commonly occurs, with larger females. However, as a deviation from this general rule, larger males are found in some species. In these species often sexual selection for large males has been presumed. The spittlebug Cercopis sanguinolenta exhibits a distinct sexual size dimorphism with larger males. Mating behaviour was studied in a field population in respect to mating success of males and females. The aim of this study was to examine the mechanisms that lead to the observed non-random mating pattern. The results showed a mating pattern without size-assortative mating. A correlation was found between mating success and body size in males. In females no such correlation was found. The mobility of males depends on their body size and mobility is high only when females are present. However, in an analysis of covariance it was found that male mating success is not correlated with mobility, when controlled for body size. During a 15 month study on free ranging langurs (Presbytis entellus) at Jodhpur, Rajasthan, India, 5 adult male replacements were observed as a result of nontroop male invasions into the home ranges of 3 neighbouring one-male troops comprising 16–28 members each. Jodhpur langurs have no breeding season. Periods of instability during resident male changes lasted 11–119 days. Linear dominance hierarchies could be detected within the 3 main rival male bands of 2, 5, and 28–35 members. The respective alphas drove their allies away after their bands succeeded cooperatively at occupying a troop. During gradual replacements interim residencies alternated with multi-male stages. A large band's alpha may have had better chances to win the competition, since adult and nonadult allies functioned as “buffers” in agonistic encounters. The role of kin selection in structuring the composition of male bands and male coalitional behaviour cannot yet be quantified. Tactical “deceit” of powerful males to cause unrealistic expectations and in this way agonistic engagement of less strong males can be ruled out. “Sneaking copulations” is a proximate advantage for subordinate supporters, since they participated in 61.9% of all sexual interactions. Female promiscuity might reflect a strategy to induce male-male competition and thus select for a strong resident.  相似文献

Females of many acanthosomatid shield bugs attend eggs and young nymphs by covering them with their bodies. Although such form of maternal care has been suggested to have evolved independently in four genera, Elasmucha, Sastragala, Acanthosoma and Sinopla, previous studies exploring its adaptive function have solely focused on species of Elasmucha. This study pioneered an experimental examination of maternal care in the Japanese species Sastragala esakii. Field experiments demonstrated that unattended egg masses suffered intense predation, whereas egg masses attended by their mothers were rarely preyed upon. The ant Crematogaster sp. was the most common egg predator, while two other insect species were also observed to prey on eggs. The exclusion of ant workers and other walking predators from accessing egg masses through the utilization of a sticky trap resulted in a remarkably improved egg survival rate in orphaned egg masses, suggesting that, at least in our study site, maternal care of S. esakii primarily functions to protect eggs from walking predators. Laboratory observations revealed that egg protection against predators was achieved through at least two distinctive defensive behaviors shown by egg-tending females: (i) tilting their bodies when approached by predators; and (ii) fanning their wings when in contact with predators. However, females displayed a limited response to predators approaching from the posterior direction, suggesting that visual cues play a significant role in predator recognition. These results indicate a similarity in the maternal care functions between Elasmucha and Sastragala, and suggest the parallel evolution of female defensive behaviors.  相似文献

Sexual selection is believed to play a major role in speciation processes of cichlid fishes in the East African Great Lakes, in particular Lakes Malawi and Victoria, by driving diversification in male nuptial coloration. In Lake Tanganyika, a high rate of color pattern diversification is found in the genus Tropheus, where more than 100, mostly allopatric, color morphs have been described. Whether color pattern differentiation in Tropheus could follow from sexual selection as well, has not yet been conclusively shown. Unlike typical sexually selected species, Tropheus are sexually monomorphic, establish temporary pair bonds and spawn monogamously. Variance in mating success among individuals would still allow for sexual selection, but due to their high population census sizes, parentage data from natural populations are difficult to obtain. Simulations designed according to existing data on mating behavior in Tropheus suggested that variance in male reproductive success can be substantial and lead to levels of opportunity for selection, which are similar to values estimated, for example, from natural populations of sexually dimorphic songbirds. Variance in male success was mostly affected by the way females perceived and reacted to differences between males, and to a lesser extent by the duration of components of the reproductive cycles of males and females. These results indicate that future work on the importance of sexual selection in Tropheus should concentrate on mate choice cues and female mate choice behavior, but does not depend critically on the acquisition of more detailed life history data.  相似文献
