Although it was claimed that the Kuwait Master Plans have helped guide the development in Kuwait from a small mud brick town of 150,000 inhabitants to today's modern metropolis of about 3 million inhabitants, this article argues that the implementation of the first plan in 1952 planted the seeds of human and ecological risk problems in Kuwait, which were intensified later in the 1960s and 1970s. As the latest 2007 Master Plan comprises major development projects, which could certainly have adverse ecological impacts on the environment and human well-being, this article highlights the importance of integrating environmental impact assessment (EIA) and the development projects within the Master Plan as a tool for sustainable development and as an assessment of human and ecological risks before the implementation of such projects. According to the current status, the level of collaboration among the concerned organizations responsible for preparing the Master Plans and conducting the EIA is behind the ambition. This article recommends setting out documented environmental criteria for land use planning and major development projects implementation, so as to control pollution and prevent any environmental change that might impair the public's health or influence future ecological stability.  相似文献

[目的]通过比较分析油藏样品的微生物群落结构特点,认识油藏微生物的生态功能.[方法]利用3种油藏微生物研究中常用的富集培养方法,对胜利油田单12区块S12-4油井产出水样品进行了选择性富集培养,运用构建16S rRNA基因文库的方法分析了富集样品和非培养样品的细菌多样性.[结果]通过16S rRNA基因序列比对发现,非培养样品、异养菌富集样品、烃降解菌富集样品和硫酸盐还原菌富集样品中的优势菌分别为Pseudomonas属,Thermotoga属,Thermaerobacter属和Thermotoga属的成员.多样性分析结果表明,非培养样品的微生物多样性最丰富,同时非培养样品和富集样品的微生物群落结构存在很大的差异,富集样品中的微生物包括优势菌在油藏原位环境中含量很低.[结论]细菌组成差异的比较结果,对油藏微生物的生态功能研究和微生物驱油潜力评估具有重要意义.  相似文献

The United States is currently experiencing its worst man-made environmental disaster, the BP Deepwater Horizon oil leak. The Gulf of Mexico oil spill is severe in its impact, but it is only one of several global oil spill disasters in history. Students can utilize the technology of Google Earth to explore the spatial and temporal distribution of oil spills. In addition to increasing content knowledge of oil spills, Google Earth assists in developing student geographic and technologic literacy. 通过在根茎型克隆植物沙鞭和赖草的种群中设置模拟风蚀坑,研究了根茎禾草沙鞭和赖草对风蚀坑的修复能力及其机理。实验结果表明:沙鞭和赖草都能通过克隆拓展在风蚀坑中产生比自然条件下更多的分株,以更好利用风蚀坑中充足的光照,从而具有很强的风蚀坑修复能力;但同时这些分株的生长也受到风蚀坑中养分条件的制约,生物量、叶片数量和分株高度都不如自然条件下形成的分株;赖草通过间隔子的可塑性反应,将更多的新生分株放置在风蚀坑内,从而具有更强的修复能力。赖草对风蚀坑的修复主要是通过周围根茎扩展进入坑中,然后产生新的分株;而沙鞭不仅可以通过周边根茎进入产生新的分株,同时也可以通过更深层次的根茎来产生新的分株。  相似文献

Two crude oils, South Louisiana and Kuwait, were examined for their impact on glucose utilization by bacterial populations from the Gulf of Mexico. The uptake and mineralization of [U-14C]glucose was assayed after a 4- to 23-h exposure to various concentrations of added crude oil (0, 0.001, 0.01, and 0.1% [vol/vol]). The effects of oil were determined in a total of 15 sediment and 13 water samples collected from offshore, open-bay, and salt marsh environments. The utilization of glucose by bacterial populations usually was not affected by added oil; in 10 sediment and 11 water samples, oil had no significant effect on either glucose uptake or mineralization. Stimulation by oil was recorded in four sediment samples. Oil inhibition occurred in one sediment and two water samples, but only in the presence of the highest concentration of added oil, i.e., 0.1%. Our data suggest that short-term exposure to either South Louisiana or Kuwait crude oil, even at 0.1%, usually has no toxic effect on glucose utilization by marine bacterial populations.  相似文献

This laboratory study measured growth of one plant species, Lycopersicon esculentum Big Girl (tomato), that is sensitive to the presence of soil contamination, in Kuwait soil amended with crude-oil-contaminated soil. Germinated tomato seeds were placed in containers with soil containing 0, 0.12, 0.24, 0.36, 0.48, 0.60, 1.2, and 2.4% crude oil and were grown in an indoor growth chamber. Plants grew in Kuwait soil containing up to 0.36% crude oil; however, growth and fruit production were compromised at crude oil concentrations greater than 0.12% when compared with control plants. Plants did not grow in Kuwait soil amended with 0.48% crude oil or higher.  相似文献

At present no mammalian test system which meets the toxicological requirements is available for routine testing of mutagenicity. Therefore, emphasis should be laid primarily on basic research in this area and not on large-scale screening of possible mutagens with methods known to be inadequate in many respects, if mutagenicity is a major hazard to man, a view certainly not shared by all toxicologists.Furthermore, if carcinogenicity is based on a mutagenic event occurring in somatic cells, the well established tests for carcinogenicity would provide a better way for evaluating irreversible somatic mutations than the tests now suggested for mutagenicity testing.In the present situation a drastic reduction of the noxes men are exposed to would be the most reliable means of preventing a toxicological disaster. We are still in the situation of continuously performing “mass human experiments” and detecting hazards only after considerable harm has been done. Consequently, the goal must be neither to expose a considerable proportion of our population to environmental hazards nor to give drugs to thousands or even millions of healthy people for any reasons whatsoever, unless test systems are available which would allow effective prevention of disaster.  相似文献

The relative monthly solar radiation in Jubail Industrial City, Saudi Arabia (300 km southeast of Kuwait City) was reduced to 75% of the recent 10-year mean value by the torching of the first 50 of many oil wells and production facilities in Kuwait in mid-January 1991. The value was reduced further when an additional 600 wells were ignited in late February. Solar radiation continued at 55–65% of normal levels during March to August, when 341 oil wells were still burning. Recovery was rapid as the fires in oil fields located directly upwind of Jubail were extinguished, with the solar radiation reaching 95% of the long-term mean in October.  相似文献

A number of diverse technological options are being considered for the remediation of soil contaminated with weathered crude oil in Kuwait. The bioremediation technique involving the use of composting soil piles was selected from among the most appropriate methods and evaluated on a pilot scale. The field test was conducted from November 1992 to September 1993 at the Burgan oil field. Soil piles were constructed from the contaminated soil after amendment with necessary soil additives. The piles were subjected to regular irrigation and turning, and a monitoring program was carried out, including monthly soil sample collection from each pile for the measurement of petroleum hydrocarbon PAHs, soil microbial counts, mineral and metal concentrations. The results obtained showed that the composting soil pile treatment resulted in the reduction of up to 59% total extractable matter of oil contamination within 8 months. This article describes the technology used and summarizes the results obtained.  相似文献

The paper describes recent research on human DNA damage related to environmental and dietary polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) exposures. The study populations either represent general populations of large geographical regions, or their exposure situation may have relevance to the general population. In Silesia, Poland, and Northern Bohemia, Czech Republic, where coal-based industry and domestic heating are the major sources of PAHs, significant differences have been observed in white blood cell DNA adducts and cytogenetic biomarkers between environmentally exposed and rural control populations, and significant seasonal variations of DNA damage have been detected. Bus drivers, traffic policemen and local residents have been involved in biomarker studies in Copenhagen, Athens, Genoa and Cairo, and differences have been measured in the level of DNA damage of urban and rural populations. Burning of smoky coal in unvented homes in Xuan Wei region, China, causes high PAH exposure of residents, which has been reflected in DNA adduct levels in different tissues. Indoor wood burning in open fireplaces did not increase human DNA adduct levels. Oil-well fires left burning in Kuwait after the Persian Gulf war created an unprecedented environmental pollution. However, insignificant environmental PAH levels were measured several miles from these fires. Aromatic and PAH-DNA adduct levels in white blood cells of US Army soldiers were lower during their deployment in Kuwait, than in Fulda, Germany, where they were stationed before and after serving in Kuwait. The contribution of dietary PAH exposure to blood cell DNA adduct levels had been demonstrated in studies in which volunteers consumed heavily charbroiled beef. Environmental tobacco smoke did not cause detectable changes, as measured by 32P-postlabelling, in DNA adduct levels in non-smokers. In the reviewed studies, observed DNA adduct levels were generally in the range of 1 to 10 adducts, and not higher than 40 adducts in 108 nucleotides. Typically, 1.5 to 3-fold differences have been detected in DNA adduct levels between the exposed and control groups.  相似文献

A pilot study was undertaken to determine the occurrence and distribution of pathogenic nocardiae in Kuwaiti soil. A total of 102 soil samples collected from two localities were investigated by the paraffin bait technique. Nocardia asteroides was the only species isolated from 42 (41%) soil samples. None of the isolates fulfilled the criteria required for identification of N. farcinica or N. nova. Thirty one (73.8%) isolates showed equivalent growth at 45 °C and 35 °C, 17 (40.4%) isolates utilized acetamide for carbon and nitrogen requirements and 3 (7.1%) isolates showed delayed arylsulphatase activity. Only a solitary isolate was resistant to cefamandole. Soil samples originating from the Kuwait University Campus Shuwaikh, which were rich in humus/organic matter, were more productive for N. asteroides (67%) than the samples which were devoid of it but were mixed with crude oil (39%). Sand samples that lacked organic matter and crude oil samples were least productive of N. asteroides. These preliminary findings do not suggest that massive oil contamination of soil in the Ahmadi oil field area during the Gulf war promoted the natural occurrence of N. asteroides. However, isolation of N. asteroides in as many as 41% of the soil sample is a significant observation warranting further epidemiologic studies including its possible role in the operation desert storm sickness syndrome. This is the first report on the natural occurrence of N. asteroides in Kuwait. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Mangrove (Avicennia marina) communities constitute an importantcomponent of the renewable natural vegetation resources of the coastalzones of the Arabian Gulf south of Kuwait. Attempts to introduce themangrove into the intertidal zones of the coastline of Kuwait are underwaybecause of the expected favorable environmental impact of this plant, andbecause of its moderating influence on the local climate and enhancementof the aesthetic and recreational value of the coastlines and fisheryresources. Propagules were collected from natural stands of mangrove inBahrain and the United Arab Emirates. Silvicultural practices were followedto produce healthy plants after growing of propagules in the greenhouse.Observations indicated that there is a positive correlation betweenpropagule weight and the length of the seedling stem. Outplanting wasdone in two sites in the intertidal zone around the Sulabikhat Bay, Kuwait.Data on plant survival showed that the most suitable level for successfulestablishment of mangrove was around or below the 3-meter contour tidalline. After 7 years of growth, plants reached a mean height of 250 cm,which is close to the height of their parent trees in Bahrain. The U.A.E.stock plants reached 288 cm after 5 years of growth in Kuwait. Plantsflowered and produced viable seeds. The biological feasibility ofestablishing mangrove plantations in the intertidal flats of Kuwait's coastlineswas documented from the field observation of the experimental plantations.Studies to document the environmental impact of the introduction areunderway.  相似文献

The Dunes Sagebrush-Lizard (Sceloporus arenicolus) is a North American species endemic to sand-shinnery oak habitats of the Mescalero and Monahans sand dunes in eastern New Mexico and western Texas. This lizard is listed as Endangered in New Mexico and exhibits habitat specificity at several geographic scales. Dunes Sagebrush-Lizards are only found in topographically complex shinnery oak (Quercus havardii) dominated landscapes within their small geographic distribution and are not found in surrounding human-altered landscapes. Within suitable sand-shinnery oak habitat, individuals predominantly occupy non-vegetated sand dune blowouts and utilize blowouts with particular physical characteristics due to thermoregulatory, reproduction, and foraging requirements. Here, we examined historical and contemporary patterns of genetic differentiation with respect to the current distribution of suitable habitat at multiple spatial scales using mitochondrial DNA sequences and microsatellite data from individuals throughout the entire range. We found three genetic clusters of individuals generally concordant with geographic regions and low sequence divergence at mitochondrial loci suggesting a recent origin of these populations. We also found high levels of genetic structure at microsatellite loci among populations within each of these groups indicating restricted gene flow at intermediate scales. Despite high habitat specificity, we did not detect genetic structure among sand blowouts at finer spatial scales. Within each population, matrices comprised of both sand blowouts and vegetated shinnery oak patches are necessary for genetic connectivity, but the fine scale spatial arrangement of blowouts may not be as critical. We discuss our results with respect to the scale of landscape heterogeneity and habitat connectivity and consider the conservation implications for this threatened taxon.  相似文献

Oil residues arising from the Christos-Bitas spillage were found to contain 28% of oil extractable by carbon tetrachloride; the remainder comprised water and undefined solids. When incubated in 8-L rectangular tanks with a mixed population of mainly bacteria to which diammonium hydrogen phosphate was added, ca. 97% of the Christos-Bitas oil fraction was degraded. When the same substrate was degraded by only three isolated Pseudomonas strains in 1-L cylindrical tanks, degradation was only ca. 56%. Raising the temperature from 20 to 50 degrees C brought about a visible loss in cell viability with only ca. 38% of the substrate degraded. Oil degradation proceeded in direct proportion to increases in cell attachment to the dispersed oil. The aliphatic fraction of Kuwait crude oil up to nC(25) measured by gas liquid chromatography (GLC) was oxidized within 48 h. Using this substrate the three pseudomonads together brought about a more complete degradation (87%) than a single Bacillus isolate. The Bacillusstrain was capable of deggrading between 50 and 65% of the crude, depending on whether diammonium hydrogen phosphate supplemented a peptone-based medium. The preferential biodgradability of fractions was the following aliphatics > aromatics > asphalts, as has been widely reported.  相似文献

A proprietary bacterial strain (Pet 1006) produced biosurfactants when grown on both glucose and an immiscible hydrocarbon as carbon sources. Pilot-plant-scale (1500 I) production gave, on repeated batch runs, 2 tonnes of culture broth containing active biosurfactant. The product was used as a substitute for chemical surfactants in a clean-up demonstration test carried out by Cargo Fleet Chemical Company Ltd. (UK) on an oil storage tank belonging to Kuwait Oil Company, Kuwait. The clean-up was successful in removing the sludge from the tank bottom, and it also allowed the recovery of more than 90% of the hydrocarbon trapped in the sludge. The recovered hydrocarbon had excellent properties and could be sold after being blended with fresh crude.I.M. The habitat heterogeneity hypothesis states that an increase in habitat heterogeneity leads to an increase in species diversity. We tested this hypothesis for a community of small mammals in the semiarid, sand-shinnery-oak ecosystem of the southwestern United States. We used indices of differentiation diversity to quantify differences between two habitat types (blowouts in a sand-shinnery-oak matrix) in terms of species diversity. The Wilson-Shmida index (βT) considers species composition only, whereas the Morisita-Horn index (CmH) also takes species abundances into account. We constructed null models to test the hypothesis that differentiation diversity between habitat types is greater than that produced by stochastic processes. Two models were constructed, one based on the random placement of species and one based on the random placement of individuals. No evidence supported the hypothesis that habitat heterogeneity enhances diversity of a landscape by increasing the number of species in an area. Indeed, paired habitats were more similar than chance alone would dictate in terms of species identities. In contrast, habitat heterogeneity affects diversity by significantly altering the relative proportions of species in contrasting habitat types. Because seeds differentially accumulate at the interface between blowouts and matrix, the high productivity of the edge may actually homogenize habitat types in terms of species richness. Nonetheless, blowouts might best be considered to be microhabitats which enhance or complement the value of the matrix even though the species which use either habitat type are identical.  相似文献

在实际生产生活中人们关注的不仅是基于P-S-R(压力-状态-响应)框架的生态安全状态评价,而是未来生态安全灾变态势问题。灾变是由风险演变而来。存在生态安全隐患,就存在生态安全灾变的风险,生态安全隐患是生态安全灾变的风险源。生态安全灾变风险是指在一定区域内,由于各种隐患因素对人与自然环境复合生态系统可能产生的危害作用,从而使生态安全状态所承受的恶化和灾变的可能性,是人们不能确切把握且不愿接受的安全状态恶化的一种态势。以区域突发型生态安全隐患和缓发型生态安全隐患的危害作用为研究对象,采用生态风险评价和地理信息系统(GIS)分析技术相结合的方法,以辽河流域为实例探讨了生态安全灾变态势的理论与方法。  相似文献

Olive-mill wastes are produced by the industry of olive oil production, which is a very important economic activity, particularly for Spain, Italy and Greece, leading to a large environmental problem of current concern in the Mediterranean basin. There is as yet no accepted treatment method for all the wastes generated during olive oil production, mainly due to technical and economical limitations but also the scattered nature of olive mills across the Mediterranean basin. The production of virgin olive oil is expanding worldwide, which will lead to even larger amounts of olive-mill waste, unless new treatment and valorisation technologies are devised. These are encouraged by the trend of current environmental policies, which favour protocols that include valorisation of the waste. This makes biological treatments of particular interest. Thus, research into different biodegradation options for olive-mill wastes and the development of new bioremediation technologies and/or strategies, as well as the valorisation of microbial biotechnology, are all currently needed. This review, whilst presenting a general overview, focusses critically on the most significant recent advances in the various types of biological treatments, the bioremediation technology most commonly applied and the valorisation options, which together will form the pillar for future developments within this field.  相似文献

This research examines how information about an oil spill, its impacts, and the use of dispersants to treat the oil, moved through social media and the surrounding Internet during the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Using a collection of tweets captured during the spill, we employ a mixed-method approach including an in-depth qualitative analysis to examine the content of Twitter posts, the connections that Twitter users made with each other, and the links between Twitter content and the surrounding Internet. This article offers a range of findings to help practitioners and others understand how social media is used by a variety of different actors during a slow-moving, long-term, environmental disaster. We enumerate some of the most salient themes in the Twitter data, noting that concerns about health impacts were more likely to be communicated in tweets about dispersant use, than in the larger conversation. We describe the accounts and behaviors of highly retweeted Twitter users, noting how locals helped to shape the network and the conversation. Importantly, our results show the online crowd wanting to participate in and contribute to response efforts, a finding with implications for future oil spill response.  相似文献
