Menopause is puzzling because life-history theory predicts there should be no selection for outliving one’s reproductive capacity. Adaptive explanations of menopause offered thus far turn on women’s long-term investment in offspring and grandoffspring, all variations on the grandmother hypothesis. Here, I offer a very different explanation. The patriarch hypothesis proposes that once males became capable of maintaining high status and reproductive access beyond their peak physical condition, selection favored the extension of maximum life span in males. Because the relevant genes were not on the Y chromosome, life span increased in females as well. However, the female reproductive span was constrained by the depletion of viable oocytes, which resulted in menopause. A new hypothesis is proposed to explain the perennially enlarged breasts of human females. The nubility hypothesis proposes that hominid females evolved protruding breasts because the size and shape of breasts function as an honest signal of residual reproductive value. Hominid females with greater residual reproductive value were preferred by males once reliable cues to ovulation were lost and long-term bonding evolved. This adaptation was favored because female-female competition for investing males increased once hominid males began to provide valuable resources.  相似文献

Recent studies have highlighted the importance of the human microbiome in health and disease. However, for the most part the mechanisms by which the microbiome mediates disease, or protection from it, remain poorly understood. The keystone-pathogen hypothesis holds that certain low-abundance microbial pathogens can orchestrate inflammatory disease by remodelling a normally benign microbiota into a dysbiotic one. In this Opinion article, we critically assess the available literature that supports this hypothesis, which may provide a novel conceptual basis for the development of targeted diagnostics and treatments for complex dysbiotic diseases.  相似文献

The possibility of a Middle-Late Miocene separation of the human lineage from the lineages leading to the extant great apes, based on paleontological and phenetic evidence, is presented. Middle Miocene Sivapithecus, rather then Early Miocene Dryopithecus, is supported as a last common ancestor of Pongo, Pan, Gorilla, and Homo. Estimates for the branching of the lineages are a maximum of 15 m.y.a. for the Pongo lineage and a range from 14-6 m.y.a. for the Pan, Gorilla, and Ausralopithecus/Homo lineages. Weaknesses of the late divergence hypothesis are discussed.  相似文献

Members of genus Homo are the only animals known to create and control fire. The adaptive significance of this unique behavior is broadly recognized, but the steps by which our ancestors evolved pyrotechnic abilities remain unknown. Many hypotheses attempting to answer this question attribute hominin fire to serendipitous, even accidental, discovery. Using recent paleoenvironmental reconstructions, we present an alternative scenario in which, 2 to 3 million years ago in tropical Africa, human fire dependence was the result of adapting to progressively fire‐prone environments. The extreme and rapid fluctuations between closed canopy forests, woodland, and grasslands that occurred in tropical Africa during that time, in conjunction with reductions in atmospheric carbon dioxide levels, changed the fire regime of the region, increasing the occurrence of natural fires. We use models from optimal foraging theory to hypothesize benefits that this fire‐altered landscape provided to ancestral hominins and link these benefits to steps that transformed our ancestors into a genus of active pyrophiles whose dependence on fire for survival contributed to its rapid expansion out of Africa.  相似文献

As originally postulated in Crick's Adaptor hypothesis, the faithful synthesis of proteins from messenger RNA is dependent on the presence of perfectly acylated tRNAs. The hypothesis also suggested that each aminoacyl-tRNA would be made by a unique enzyme. Recent data have now forced a revision of this latter point, with an increasingly diverse array of enzymes and pathways being implicated in aminoacyl-tRNA synthesis. These unexpected findings have far-reaching implications for our understanding of protein synthesis and its origins.  相似文献

Emerging diseases have been responsible for the death of about 30% of corals worldwide during the last 30 years. Coral biologists have predicted that by 2050 most of the world's coral reefs will be destroyed. This prediction is based on the assumption that corals can not adapt rapidly enough to environmental stress-related conditions and emerging diseases. Our recent studies of the Vibrio shiloi/Oculina patagonica model system of the coral bleaching disease indicate that corals can indeed adapt rapidly to changing environmental conditions by altering their population of symbiotic bacteria. These studies have led us to propose the Coral Probiotic Hypothesis. This hypothesis posits that a dynamic relationship exists between symbiotic microorganisms and environmental conditions which brings about the selection of the most advantageous coral holobiont. Changing their microbial partners would allow the corals to adapt to changing environmental conditions more rapidly (days to weeks) than via mutation and selection (many years). An important outcome of the Probiotic Hypothesis would be development of resistance of the coral holobiont to diseases. The following evidence supports this hypothesis: (i) Corals contain a large and diverse bacterial population associated with their mucus and tissues; (ii) the coral-associated bacterial population undergoes a rapid change when environmental conditions are altered; and (iii) although lacking an adaptive immune system (no antibodies), corals can develop resistance to pathogens. The Coral Probiotic Hypothesis may help explain the evolutionary success of corals and moderate the predictions of their demise.  相似文献

Variable receptor affinity hypothesis   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Measurements of the contractile response to norepinephrine (NE) of a variety of arteries of three mammalian species that are commonly used in the laboratory provide evidence that tissue sensitivity and affinity of the alpha 1-adrenoceptor for NE covary over a range of several orders of magnitude. The quantitative relationship suggests that variation in affinity can, to a great extent, account for the variation in sensitivity found in a number of circumstances. Furthermore, it is argued that the variation in affinity appears to be continuous and thus does not provide a basis for receptor type subdivision. There is also evidence that adrenergic antagonist affinity can vary significantly in tissues. The factors that might account for this variation include differences in receptor chemical structure, in the local membrane microenvironment, and in a number of intracellular processes. A hypothesis of variable receptor affinity has been proposed. If it is correct, then variation in receptor affinity is an important functionally relevant variable that could account for selectivity of tissue responses to circulating hormones and may represent a mechanism of change in the intact organism and in disease.  相似文献

The death hormone hypothesis   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The 'death hormones' or monocarpic senescence factors are hypothetical substances transported from the fruits to the vegetative parts of the mother plant, where they may stop growth, activate senescence, remobilize nutrients. and finally lead to the death of the plant. Death hormones could well be derivatives of jasmonic acid, 4-chloroindoleacetic acid, or other chlorine compounds.  相似文献
