On the origin of tiger bush   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7  
We propose a model which describes the dynamics of vast classes of terrestrial plant communities growing in arid or semi-arid regions throughout the world. On the basis of this model, we show that the vegetation stripes (tiger bush) formed by these communities result from an interplay between short-range cooperative interactions controlling plant reproduction and long-range self-inhibitory interactions originating from plant competition for environmental resources. Isotropic as well as anisotropic environmental conditions are discussed. We find that vegetation stripes tend to orient themselves in the direction parallel or perpendicular with respect to a direction of anisotropy depending on whether this anisotropy influences the interactions favouring or inhibiting plant reproduction; furthermore, we show that ground curvature is not a necessary condition for the appearance of arcuate vegetation patterns. In agreement within situ observations, we find that the width of vegetated bands increases when environmental conditions get more arid and that patterns formed of stripes oriented parallel to the direction of a slope are static, while patterns which are perpendicular to this direction exhibit an upslope motion.  相似文献

The presence of dinitrophenol (DNP) during the chemostatic growth of Acetobacter methanolicuson glucose led to i) no significant increase in glucose dehydrogenase, ii) a decrease in the capacity to oxidize glucose by about 30%, not depending on the DNP concentration, and iii) a gradual decrease in the capacity to form gluconic acid, depending on the concentration of the uncoupler. Similar effects of DNP on Acetobacter methanolicuswere observed during the gluconic acid formation process. The loss in the capacity to form gluconic acid is indicated by a drop in the ATP concentration of the cells which cannot be counteracted by the ATP syntheses originating from the oxidation of gluconic acid and of glucose. ATP could be necessary for pumping protons out of the cells that were taken up together with gluconic acid and by the effect of DNP.  相似文献

Environmental conditions of a parent plant can influence the performance of their clonal offspring, and such clonal transgenerational effects may help offspring adapt to different environments. However, it is still unclear how many vegetative generations clonal transgenerational effects can transmit for and whether it depends on the environmental conditions of the offspring. We grew the ancestor ramets of the floating clonal plant Spirodela polyrhiza under a high and a low nutrient level and obtained the so-called 1st-generation offspring ramets of two types (from these two environments). Then we grew the 1st-generation offspring ramets of each type under the high and the low nutrient level and obtained the so-called 2nd-generation offspring ramets of four types. We repeated this procedure for another five times and analyzed clonal transgenerational effects on growth, morphology and biomass allocation of the 1st- to the 6th-generation offspring ramets. We found positive, negative or neutral (no) transgenerational effects of the ancestor nutrient condition on the offspring of S. polyrhiza, depending on the number of vegetative generations, the nutrient condition of the offspring environment and the traits considered. We observed significant clonal transgenerational effects on the 6th-generation offspring; such effects occurred for all three types of traits (growth, morphology and allocation), but varied depending on the nutrient condition of the offspring environment and the traits considered. Our results suggest that clonal transgenerational effects can transmit for multiple vegetative generations and such impacts can vary depending on the environmental conditions of offspring.  相似文献

When the barley endosperm flinders are incubated with the gibberellin solution under aerobic condition, α-amylase is produced. But it is not clear whether this aerobic condition is necessary for the biosynthesis of α-amylase or for the absoption of gibberellin into the endosperm tissue. The authors found that the rate of the α-amylase production did not decrease when the incubation medium containing gibberellin was flung away after 48 hours incubation and then this incubation was continued with the fresh medium free from gibberellin. When, at the begining of this second incubation, DNP, KCN or chloramphenicol was added to the fresh medium or anaerobic condition was made, this α-amylase production was found to be inhibited to a considerable extent. As at this period (i.e. the first 48 hours incubation) gibberellin seems to be fully absorbed into the tissue, the authors estimated that the aerobic condition is necessary for this α-amylase production.  相似文献

1. Habitat fragmentation is a major threat to biodiversity because it disrupts movement between habitat patches. In addition, arthropod fitness may be reduced in fragmented habitats, e.g. due to reduced prey availability. 2. We studied the relationship of spider body condition with habitat fragmentation, population density, and prey availability. We expected that prey availability and population density of spiders would be affected by landscape composition and patch isolation. Body condition should be enhanced by high prey availability, but negatively affected by population density due to competition. 3. We sampled spiders on 30 groups of cherry trees that varied independently in the level of isolation from other woody habitats and in the percentage of woody habitat within 500 m radius. As a measure of body condition, we used residuals of the relationship between individual body mass/opisthosoma width and prosoma width of the two most common orb‐weaving spider species, Nuctenea umbratica Clerck and Araniella opisthographa Kulczynski. 4. Body condition of A. opisthographa was positively correlated with the abundance of flies, which increased with the percentage of forest in the landscape. In contrast, body condition of N. umbratica was reduced at high population densities, presumably due to intraspecific competition. In addition, body condition and population density of A. opisthographa was lower at isolated sites. 5. Our study suggests that effects of landscape fragmentation on body condition vary strongly between spider species, depending on the relative role of food limitation and intraspecific competition.  相似文献

Parents can exert a range of non-genetic effects on the growth and survival of their offspring. In particular, parents may modify the size or condition of their offspring depending on the amount of energy they have available for reproduction. In this study, the body condition of breeding pairs of the coral reef fish Acanthochromis polyacanthus was experimentally manipulated to test the effects of parental condition on reproductive output and offspring life history traits. Parents in good condition commenced breeding earlier, had higher reproductive output, and their eggs exhibited increased survival during embryogenesis, compared to parents in poorer condition. Increased reproductive output was attained through more reproductive bouts over the breeding season that contained both a greater number and an increased size of eggs. The offspring from parents in good condition were larger at hatching, with larger yolk reserves and increased survival on endogenous reserves. Larger size is expected to provide benefits to offspring through reduced susceptibility to size-selective mortality. The range of offspring characteristics modified by parental condition could result in a greater proportion of offspring from good condition parents recruiting to the population.  相似文献

Ecological theory suggests that demographic responses by populations to environmental change vary depending on whether individuals inhabit central or peripheral regions within the species’ geographic range. Here, we tested this prediction by comparing a population of ringed seals Pusa hispida located at high latitudes as part of their core range (core) with a population located at the southern extremity of their range (peripheral). First, we compared the two regions’ environmental trends in timing of sea-ice breakup and freeze-up, open-water duration and the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). We found that the core region shifted to progressively warmer conditions in the early 1990s; whereas, in the peripheral region, the warming trend shifted in 1999 to one with no warming trend but high inter-annual variability. Next, we examined how body condition, inferred from blubber depth, responded to temporal changes in sea-ice and climatic variables – variables that have been shown to influence ringed seal demography. Core seals displayed minimal seasonal changes in body condition; whereas peripheral seals displayed a 20–60% amplitude seasonal change in body condition with a phase shift to earlier initiation of fat accumulation and loss. Finally, we tested for interannual differences and found that both core and peripheral seals responded similarly with decreased body condition following more positive NAO. Environmental variables influenced body condition in opposite directions between the two regions with core seals declining in body condition with later spring breakup and shorter open-water duration, whereas peripheral seals showed opposite relationships. Seals living at the core likely benefit from an evolved match between adaptation and environmental variation resulting in dampened seasonal and interannual fluctuations in body condition. Knowledge of how different populations respond to environmental change depending on geographic location within a species range can assist in anticipating population specific responses to climate warming.  相似文献

A 2 × 2 table is analyzed from the conditional viewpoint, using Fisher's exact test, for which there is abundant software nowadays (StatXact, SPSS with the module “Exact Test”, …). Nevertheless, because it is well-nigh impossible to work the test out “by hand”, it is customary in many books to analyze the table, in an approximate fashion, by using the classic chi-square test with the appropriate continuity correction, and this is what many researchers do in practice. Unfortunately little research has been carried out on the validity conditions of the test (remember the classic advice that the minimum expected quantity E should be larger than or equal to 5), so that it is applied indiscriminately with the obvious danger of obtaining erroneous results. In this paper the exact validity conditions (which depend not only on E, but also on the real P-value, on the size of the sample, on the number of tails of the test and on the continuity correction used) are determined, showing that the classic condition E > 5 can be either very strict or quite liberal (depending on the circumstances) and it can even be necessary for the test to have E > 20. A similar study is made of the case of using the binomial approximation, while the Poisson approximation is also discussed. The article ends with a list of rules and precautions to be borne in mind by researchers using the approximate methods. The strict rules are complex enough to make the researcher want to use the exact test, but simplified (and conservative) rules are also given for those unable to do so.  相似文献

Cell counts are the standard measure to quantify harmful algae and the basis for decisions on measures necessary to protect human health. Molecular detection methods have been developed for a range of algal species and genera, but these methods generally quantify DNA or RNA, and corresponding cell numbers are inferred based on the assumption that the cellular nucleic acid content is constant over time and in different conditions. Here, we tested this assumption for ichthyotoxic flagellates of the genus Pseudochattonella (Dictyochophyceae) under different light, temperature, salinity, and nutrient conditions. Our results show changes in cellular RNA contents of nearly one order of magnitude depending on the condition and also the time of exposure, rendering it difficult to anticipate per‐cell RNA yields even if environmental conditions are known. However, cellular RNA content was positively correlated with cell size and growth rate across our experiments, and total RNA was comparable to cell number as a predictor for total biovolume. These results demonstrate the importance of considering the variability of RNA levels for comparisons with cell counts and provide a valuable aid for the interpretation of data from RNA‐based detection methods.  相似文献

Calculations indicate that at the high specific rates of exopolysaccharide synthesis obtained in continuous cultures of Xanthomonas campestris and mucoid Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains the ATP demand for this synthesis is a significant proportion of total cellular ATP demand. However, depending upon the proportion of polymer substituents more oxidised than the carbohydrate substrate, some, and in certain cases all of this energy can be provided via NAD(P)H2 produced during exopolysaccharide synthesis. For xanthan production by X. campestris a P/O ratio of 2.2 to 2.6, depending on the content of pyruvyl substituents, would be necessary for energy generation as a direct result of xanthan synthesis to support the ATP demand for this synthesis. In sulphur-limited cultures of X. campestris, however, energy metabolism is shown to be inefficient, the organism exhibiting either a low P/O ratio or low Y ATP. In such cultures the yield of exopolysaccharide from glucose was 0.62/g glucose compared with maximum theoretical yields of 0.81 to 0.87/g glucose for P/O ratio of 1 to 3.  相似文献

One goal of this paper is to give an algorithm for computing a threshold condition for epidemiological systems arising from compartmental deterministic modeling. We calculate a threshold condition T(0) of the parameters of the system such that if T(0)<1 the disease-free equilibrium (DFE) is locally asymptotically stable (LAS), and if T(0)>1, the DFE is unstable. The second objective, by adding some reasonable assumptions, is to give, depending on the model, necessary and sufficient conditions for global asymptotic stability (GAS) of the DFE. In many cases, we can prove that a necessary and sufficient condition for the global asymptotic stability of the DFE is R(0)< or =1, where R(0) is the basic reproduction number [O. Diekmann, J.A. Heesterbeek, Mathematical Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases: Model Building, Analysis and Interpretation, Wiley, New York, 2000]. To illustrate our results, we apply our techniques to examples taken from the literature. In these examples we improve the results already obtained for the GAS of the DFE. We show that our algorithm is relevant for high dimensional epidemiological models.  相似文献

We present necessary and sufficient conditions on the stability matrix of a general n(≥2)-dimensional reaction-diffusion system which guarantee that its uniform steady state can undergo a Turing bifurcation. The necessary (kinetic) condition, requiring that the system be composed of an unstable (or activator) and a stable (or inhibitor) subsystem, and the sufficient condition of sufficiently rapid inhibitor diffusion relative to the activator subsystem are established in three theorems which form the core of our results. Given the possibility that the unstable (activator) subsystem involves several species (dimensions), we present a classification of the analytically deduced Turing bifurcations into p (1 ≤p≤ (n− 1)) different classes. For n = 3 dimensions we illustrate numerically that two types of steady Turing pattern arise in one spatial dimension in a generic reaction-diffusion system. The results confirm the validity of an earlier conjecture [12] and they also characterise the class of so-called strongly stable matrices for which only necessary conditions have been known before [23, 24]. One of the main consequences of the present work is that biological morphogens, which have so far been expected to be single chemical species [1–9], may instead be composed of two or more interacting species forming an unstable subsystem. We reexamine Eigen’s paradox using the asymptotic limit theorems of information theory. Applying the homology between information source uncertainty and free energy density, under rate distortion constraints, the error catastrophe emerges as the lowest energy state for simple prebiotic systems without error correction. Invoking the usual compartmentalization – i.e., ‘vesicles’ – and using a Red Queen argument, suggests that information crosstalk between two or more properly interacting structures can initiate a coevolutionary dynamic having at least two quasi-stable states. The first is a low energy realm near the error threshold, and, depending on available energy, the second can approach zero error as a limit. A large deviations argument produces jet-like global transitions which, over sufficient time, may enable shifts between the many quasi-stable modes available to more complicated structures, ‘locking in’ to some subset of the various possible low error rate chemical systems, which become subject to development by selection and chance extinction. Energy availability, according to the model, is thus a powerful necessary condition for low error rate replication, suggesting that some fundamental prebiotic ecosystem transformation entrained reproductive fidelity. This work, then, supports speculation that our RNA/DNA world may indeed be only the chance result of a very broad prebiotic evolutionary phenomenon. The body length and body weight of all adult common toads (Bufo bufo) breeding at a pond in south Dorset were measured between 1983 and 1993. Each toad was placed into one of four categories depending on its sex and whether it was either a first time breeder or an animal that had previously bred. The body condition of each male and female toad for each year was compared with the average body condition of all the male and female toads captured over the 11 years of the study so that between-year differences in condition could be detected. Changes in body condition were compared with changes in body condition were compared with changes in toad density, rainfall and climatic temperature during the previous summer (March–September), during hibernation (October–February) and during the month preceding the start of spawning. During the study there was a decline in the body condition of all toad categories and these changes were significantly correlated with changes in toad density and climatic temperature. Toads were also more likely to enter hibernation in poor condition following a hot dry summer than after either cool wet or hot wet summers. Body condition explained 41% of the size-specific variation in fecundity.  相似文献

Males ofChironomus yoshimatsui Martin et Sublette swarm at dusk, and copulate with females entering the swarm. It is likely in this species that, by restricting the time and place, swarming has the function of increasing the probability of the encounter between a sexually active male and a receptive female in the air. It is necessary that the timing of females taking wing coincides with that of males swarming. Field observations on swarming and mating from March to November showed that swarms and copulations occurred under lighter conditions at lower temperatures and under darker conditions at higher ones. It was suggested that both sexes may have a similar mechanism, depending on the temperature conditions, regulating the timing of taking wing.  相似文献

Studies of inflorescences of the mutants bractea and terminal flower1 and double mutant bra tfl1 of Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh. have shown that the presence of a developed leaf in the node preceding the terminal flower is a necessary condition for the formation of the terminal flower perianth. This means that perianth cannot develop in an abracteose inflorescence of terminal flower. The second necessary condition for the terminal flower formation is a sufficient level of expression of the genes responsible for floral morphogenesis. Combination of these two conditions suffices for the development of a terminal flower with perianth. Although the advent of in vivo electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy has allowed analysis of the redox status of living animals, whether the haemodynamic condition affects the signal decay rate remains unknown. Three kinds of haemodynamic conditions were generated by changing the anaesthetic dosage in mice. Haemodynamics was analysed (n=6 each) and in vivo ESR was performed to measure the signal decay rates of three nitroxyl spin probes (carbamoyl-, carboxy- and methoxycarbonyl-PROXYL) at the chest and head regions (n=6 for each condition and probe). Haemodynamic analysis revealed negative inotropic and chronotropic effects on the cardiovascular system depending on the depth of anaesthesia. Although signal decay rates differed among three probes, they were not affected by heart rate alteration. In this study we report the haemodynamics-independent signal decay rate of nitoxyl probes.  相似文献

Ion Uptake Efficiency of Sunflower Roots   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The term ion uptake efficiency is used for the rate of uptake of a particular ion from nutrient solutions holding a standard concentration of that ion (0.5 mM sulphate, 1.5 mM phosphate or 2.0 mM rubidium). The uptake efficiency for rubidium and phosphate in roots of intact sunflower plants depended on the salt status of the plants and on the concentration of the ion under investigation in pretreatment solutions. The effect of pretreatment was a rapid process causing differences of more than 300% in ion uptake efficiency within 1 h, depending on the composition of the pretreatment solution. At concentrations above 0.1 mM the rate of uptake of rubidium in the root was higher than the net potassium uptake necessary for adequate growth. The rate of sulphate uptake was related to potassium uptake but not to phosphate uptake. It is suggested that ion uptake of the roots is regulated by internal factors as well as by direct interactions between the medium and the absorbing surfaces.  相似文献
