Abstract We examine the role of the native fox, Pseudalopex culpaeus, as a frugivore and seed disperser in a semiarid thornscrub of Chile. We quantified the fruit and animal components in its diet versus the availability of fruits and small mammals in the field over a 2‐year period (January 1998 through February 2000). We tested the legitimacy and effectiveness of foxes as dispersers by quantifying the percentages of seed viability and of germination of seeds that passed through fox gut versus those picked from plants. We also studied their efficiency as dispersers, monitoring the fate of seeds in faeces placed in the field. The highest frequencies of fruit consumption by foxes were observed when abundances of small mammal prey were <6 individuals per hectare, regardless of fruit abundance in the field. Thus, foxes consumed fruits as a supplementary food resource. Based on 326 faeces, the total number of fruits consumed was about 34 000 over the 2‐year study period, and fruits from the alien shrub Schinus molle represented 98% of that total, with the native Porlieria chilensis a distant second. Germination and viability of defecated seeds of P. chilensis were reduced by 66% and 48%, respectively, in comparison to controls. In contrast, germination of seeds of S. molle increased by 50% and no effect on viability was observed. With regard to P. chilensis, foxes were legitimate (they defecated viable seeds), but ineffective (seeds in faeces had lower germination than those taken directly from parental plants and there was no seedling establishment in the field) and inefficient dispersers (seeds in faeces were deposited on microhabitats hostile to seed germination and seedling establishment). However, with regard to S. molle, foxes were legitimate, effective (seeds in faeces had higher germination than those taken directly from parental plants; there was germination but no establishment in the field), and efficient dispersers (over 41% of seeds were deposited on safe microsites). Thus, a native fox may be contributing to the spread of an alien shrub, co‐opting existing community processes.

  • Seed germination responsiveness to environmental cues is crucial for plant species living in changeable habitats and can vary among populations within the same species as a result of adaptation or modulation to local climates. Here, we investigate the germination response to environmental cues of Sisymbrella dentata (L.) O.E. Schulz, an annual endemic to Sicily living in Mediterranean Temporary Ponds (MTP), a vulnerable ecosystem.
  • Germination of the only two known populations, Gurrida and Pantano, was assessed over a broad range of conditions to understand the role of temperatures, nitrate, hormones (abscisic acid – ABA and gibberellins – GA) and after‐ripening in dormancy release in this species.
  • Seed germination responsiveness varied between the two populations, with seeds from Gurrida germinating under a narrower range of conditions. Overall, this process in S. dentata consisted of testa and endosperm rupture as two sequential events, influenced by ABA and GA biosynthesis. Nitrate addition caused an earlier testa rupture, after‐ripening broadened the thermal conditions that allow germination, and alternating temperatures significantly promoted germination of non‐after‐ripened seeds.
  • Primary dormancy in S. dentata seeds likely allows this plant to form a persistent seed bank that is responsive to specific environmental cues characteristic of MTP habitats.

In the present paper we studied the life history traits related to seed germination of Stipa tenacissima, a key species in semiarid environments of western Mediterranean areas. S. tenacissima is a perennial tussock grass, which has traditionally been considered to expand mainly by vegetative propagation with little or no sexual reproduction. We analysed seed longevity as well as the type of seed dormancy and the role of the seed covers from seeds collected from different populations in SE Spain. We also studied the variation in seed germinability among populations, individuals, and years and the ability of seeds of S. tenacissima to form soil seed banks. There was significant variation in seed germination among individuals, populations and years. Lemma and palea were the main factor controlling these differences since their removal promoted higher and faster germination and eliminated the differences in germination parameters among populations. However, the control of dormancy by lemma and palea was independent of their weight, suggesting that their chemical nature plays a more important role than does size in controlling seed germination. Mechanical scarification treatments (via abrasion with sand) did not affect seed germination. The decay in seed germinability two years after seed collection and the low density of viable seeds in soils one year after seed dispersal indicated that S. tenacissima forms transient soil seed banks.

The dynamics of dormancy release during the stratification of apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) seeds was quantitatively described by three characteristics of seeds germination: the percentage of seeds that germinated by the tenth day, mean germination time, and the sum of seeds germinated in each of ten days (Timson's parameter), which allowed the assessment of the viability, the rate of dormancy release, and seed heterogeneity. We showed that apple seeds were characterized by a combined (physical and physiological) type of dormancy, with the seed coat and the embryo envelope being involved in the maintenance of physical dormancy. The addition of sucrose to the stratification medium accelerated the release of seed dormancy and improved all characteristics that determine seed germinability. Electrolyte leakage from embryos hardly changed during stratification, which agrees with the fact that all seeds remained viable throughout the entire period of dormancy. We assume that the release of seed dormancy is not a single-stage process.

Amaranthus retroflexus L. is an importunate annual weed in many cropping systems of different countries. The main aim of this study was to investigate the effects of maternal nitrogen and drought stress on the seed dormancy and germinability of A. retroflexus. Field experiment was carried out in a factorial based on randomized complete block design, with four potential levels of soil water (–2, ?6, ?8 and ?10 bar) and three levels of nitrogen (0, 100 and 200 kg/ha). The germination characteristics of the seeds were measured at three different times (1 month, 6 months and 1 year after harvesting). Results showed that drought stress had positive effects on breaking of A. retroflexus seed dormancy until 6 months after seed harvesting. Seeds that were developed under severe water stress exhibited the highest germination percentage and germination rate. The results obtained from this study revealed that application of 100 kg/ha nitrogen during seed development increases germinability of A. retroflexus, whereas application of 200 kg/ha nitrogen induced seed dormancy. Furthermore, 100 kg/ha nitrogen application in the field along with 200 ppm gibberellic‐acid treatment during seed after‐ripening showed the highest germination percentage and germination rate for seeds after 6 months harvesting. Results also indicated that after‐ripening significantly increased seed germination and germination rate of A. retroflexus. These findings indicate that long‐term management of the soil seed bank in this species requires more stringent control due to the changes in germination timing, as detected in this study.

  • Dormancy cycling is a key mechanism that contributes to the maintenance of long‐term persistent soil seed banks, but has not been recorded in long‐lived woody shrub species from fire‐prone environments. Such species rely on seed banks and dormancy break as important processes for post‐fire recruitment and recovery.
  • We used germination experiments with smoke treatments on fresh seeds and those buried for 1 year (retrieved in spring) and 1.5 years (retrieved the following late autumn) to investigate whether Asterolasia buxifolia, a shrub from fire‐prone south‐eastern Australia with physiologically dormant seeds, exhibited dormancy cycling.
  • All seeds had an obligation for winter seasonal temperatures and smoke to promote germination, even after ageing in the soil. A high proportion of germination was recorded from fresh seeds. but germination after the first retrieval was significantly lower, despite high seed viability. After the second retrieval, germination returned to the initial level. This indicates a pattern of annual dormancy cycling; one of the few observations, to our knowledge, for a perennial species. Additionally, A. buxifolia’s winter temperature and smoke requirements did not change over time, highlighting the potential for seeds to remain conditionally dormant (i.e. restricted to a narrow range of germination conditions) for long periods.
  • For physiologically dormant species, such as A. buxifolia, we conclude that dormancy cycling is an important driver of successful regeneration, allowing seed bank persistence, sometimes for decades, during fire‐free periods unsuitable for successful recruitment, while ensuring that a large proportion of seeds are available for recruitment when a fire occurs.

Summary The germination of seeds of Amaranthus patulus Bertol., is known to be sensitive to leaf-transmitted light. Seeds were enclosed in transparent polyester-mesh envelopes and placed horizontally in 10-cm deep soil or on the soil surface, beneath a closed vegetation cover in the field. Changes in the numbers of firm intact seeds and of germinable seeds were traced for up to 3 years by periodical retrievals and germination tests. Rapid loss of germinable seeds, mainly due to germination, was observed in the buried seed population, in which only 20% of seeds maintained their germinability after 1 year, and a negligible number after 3 years. In contrast, the seeds placed on the soil surface maintained germinability relatively well: over 80% of seeds remained germinable after 1 year and a low percentage still preserved their germinability after 3 years. Assuming exponential decay in germinability, the decay rates on and in the soil were calculated from the data of the 1-year experiment to be 0.21 and 0.84 year-1 respectively. The fate of seeds that were exposed to canopy light on the soil for a month and then buried was shown to be almost the same as that of the seeds which had been continuously in 10-cm deep soil. Correspondingly, the possibility of the induction of secondary (induced) dormancy by exposure to canopy light was excluded in a laboratory experiment, in which it was found that the imbibed seeds suffering leaf-canopy inhibition of germination exuded some diffusible germination inhibitor responsible for apparent dormancy. Estimation of numbers of A. patulus in the seed bank of an early successional field showed that 3,500 seeds/m2 remained in the soil to the depth of 10 cm after 3 years' exclusion of the species following the production of 700,000 seeds/m2, by a population explosively established after experimental induction of secondary succession.

The diaspore of the Australian arid zone shrub Acacia ligulata is dispersed by birds and ants. To investigate the benefits of providing a dispersal structure attractive to both groups, we compared the germination response and viability of seeds eaten by birds, handled by ants or collected from trees to simulated precursors of germination: scarification, fire and rainfall were simulated. Seed germination and viability were related to the degree of preheating disturbance to the seed coat. Heating increased the germinability of seeds not scarified or eaten by birds. In the absence of heating, ingestion by birds increased germinability. Heating increased the mortality of seeds. Our results suggest that ingestion of seeds by birds may break seed dormancy and hence enable some seeds to germinate soon after dispersal. Alternatively, seeds not eaten by birds are likely to remain dormant until sufficiently scarified by soil or stimulated by fire. Consequently, in areas such as the Simpson Desert, A. ligulata may be able to use a range of seedling establishment ‘windows’ provided by monsoon rains, post‐fire environments and unseasonal winter rains, and also spread the risk of unsuccessful seedling establishment by retaining dormant seeds in the seedbank.

Summary

Seeds of 32 montane species were collected throughout northern Scotland. Germination responses, particularly the effects of chilling on breaking dormancy, were examined using a serial test incorporating single- and double-chilling treatments, alternating 20°C/10°C incubation temperatures, gibberellic acid and, for some species, nicking of the seed coat. Where practicable, any ungerminated seeds were ultimately dissected to assess their viability. Only three species had an absolute requirement for pre-chilling before seeds germinated. A further eight species required chilling to break the dormancy of 15% or more seeds; otherwise chilling generally increased the extent and rate of germination. Unusually, chilling induced dormancy in the seeds of four species whereas warm conditions induced dormancy which was not broken by subsequent chilling amongst seeds of Draba incana. Germinability and germination rates for nine species were regressed on the altitude, latitude and oceanicity of the plants' origin to assess the relative effects of chilling. These three environmental factors accounted for up to 98% of the variability in the germination parameters but few regressions attained statistical significance. Broad patterns suggest that chilling had a decreasing effect on both the extent and, rate of germination as the altitude of the seed source increased. A similar pattern, but only for germinability, was seen with respect to latitude.

Seed dormancy characteristics of Spartina alterniflora were delineated previously by Plyler and Carrick (American Journal of Botany, vol. 80, pp. 752–756, 1993). This study was undertaken in order to determine whether or not the dormancy characteristics of S. patens are similar. As in the previous study, the site of a dormancy mechanism was determined by assessing the germinability of surgically altered dormant seeds. Likewise, the effects of three growth-regulating substances (abscisic acid, fusicoccin, and gibberellic acid), prechilling, and light were studied by assessing the germinability of appropriately treated dormant seeds. Surgical injury to the endosperm, and to a lesser extent the scutellum, produced significant germination in S. patens, whereas only injury to the scutellum produced germination in S. alterniflora. Exogenously applied abscisic acid was highly effective in maintaining dormancy in injured seeds of both species. Gibberellic acid and fusicoccin were ineffective in promoting germination in S. patens, but fusicoccin was highly effective in breaking dormancy in 5. alterniflora. Prechilling was effective in breaking dormancy in S. patens but not in S. alterniflora. In S. patens, treatments that broke dormancy were only successful when seeds were exposed to light during the germination period. It is concluded that the dissimilarities in the dormancy mechanisms may be manifestations of the different environmental adaptations these closely related species display.

Background: Population structure and dynamics in natural ecosystems can be affected by seed viability and dormancy. However, how the endogenous contents of phytohormones and vitamin E in seeds relative to the environment affect viability and dormancy is not yet fully understood.

Aims: We studied seed viability and germination capacity in two populations of the Mediterranean shrub, Cistus albidus, exposed to contrasting environmental conditions.

Methods: We measured seed viability and germination capacity and endogenous contents of abscisic acid (ABA), gibberellins and vitamin E in seeds collected from two populations, in two environmentally contrasting environments in north-eastern Spain.

Results: Plants growing in the natural site produced seeds with lower germination percentage but similar viability, indicating higher seed dormancy. Enhanced seed dormancy was paralleled with higher contents of ABA and lower contents of gibberellins (GAs). Contents of tocopherols and tocotrienols were higher in seeds of the natural population. Tocopherol contents in seeds correlated positively with the ratio living:total aerial biomass.

Conclusions: Two Mediterranean populations of C. albidus growing in two sites with contrasting environmental conditions showed marked differences in seed dormancy and germination, which may be explained, at least in part, by differences in seed hormonal contents.

Question: In seeds which are regularly consumed by waterbirds in the field, how does gut‐passage modify their response to salinity gradients? Location: Doñana National Park salt marsh, south‐west of Spain. Methods: Seeds of Scirpus litoralis and Scirpus maritimus were collected and force fed to mallards (Anas platyrhynchos). Both the ingested seeds (passage) and non‐ingested seeds (controls) were exposed, in germination chambers, to a salinity range similar to that observed in the field (0–32 dS/m). After 30 days, the total percentage germination, the duration of the dormancy period and the germination speed were computed. The response of the different germination parameters to ingestion and salinity was analyzed using generalized lineal models. Recovery tests on seeds that did not germinate in the various treatments and tests of the effect of ingestion on the intrinsic variability in seed response were also performed. Results: An increase in salinity reduced germinability and increased the length of dormancy, while gut pas sage increased the intrinsic variability of the temporal seed response in both species. In S. litoralis there was a significant interaction between the effects of salinity and passage on germination rate. Passage increased germination rate at low salinities (≤2 dS/m) but decreased it at high salinities (≥4 dS/m). Conclusion: Gut‐passage by ducks significantly changes seed response to salinity. The outcome of plant‐animal interactions can be influenced by environmental gradients. Studies of germination in response to gut passage that do not take such gradients into account may produce misleading results.

Dormant seeds of 18 species from 9 families covering a diverse range of seed dormancy syndromes and life histories from the southwest Australian biodiversity hotspot were assessed for germinability following storage at 15–25°C for 36 months. A total of 10 species with physical dormancy (PY) and 8 with either physiological dormancy (PD) or morphophysiological dormancy (MPD) were assessed as part of the study. Prior to storage, germination from dormant seeds was 1–27%, rising to 41–100% following specific dormancy‐breaking treatments. When seed dormancy was removed prior to storage for 36 months seeds from all species were found to maintain a nondormant state and germinate to a similar level to that observed at the beginning of the experiment (44–100%). Likewise, seeds that did not receive a prestorage dormancy‐breaking treatment maintained a dormant state (0–50% germination) and subsequently responded well to a dormancy‐breaking treatment immediately prior to germination assessment (49–99%). There were minimal differences in response to dormancy‐breaking treatments before and after 36 months storage (average 4–6% difference) and in the germination responses observed between both storage environments assessed (15°C/15% eRH or 15–25°C air dried). Based on these findings, storing seeds in a nondormant state does not alter germinability and this approach provides significant benefits to current seed‐based restoration programs through reduction of double handling and improved seed use efficiency.

Seeds of twoRubus species,R. palmatus var.coptophyllus andR. microphyllus, buried for 7.5 years in soil were subjected to germination tests to investigate their germinability and germination traits. Most of the retrieved seeds were viable, and germinated at the alternating temperatures of 20/30°C in both light and dark. The twoRubus species showed similar responses of germination to temperature and light, although the final percentages of germination were slightly higher inR. palmatus var.coptophyllus. These characteristics of seed dormancy and germination would be involved in the species' utilization of ephemeral habitats created by unpredictable and infrequent disturbances.

  • Fruiting season of many Sri Lankan tropical montane species is not synchronised and may not occur when conditions are favourable for seedling establishment. We hypothesised that species with different fruiting seasons have different seed dormancy mechanisms to synchronise timing of germination with a favourable season for establishment. Using six species with different fruiting seasons, we tested this hypothesis.
  • Germination and imbibition of intact and manually scarified seeds were studied. Effect of GA3 on germination was examined. Embryo length:seed length (E:S) ratio of freshly matured seeds and of those with a split seed coat was determined. Time taken for radicle and plumule emergence and morphological changes of the embryos were recorded.
  • The radicle emerged from Ardisia missionis, Bheza nitidissima and Gaetnera walkeri seeds within 30 days, whereas it took >30 days in other species. Embryos grew in seeds of B. nitidissima and G. walkeri prior to radicle emergence but not in Microtropis wallichiana, Nothapodytes nimmoniana and Symplocos cochinchinensis. A considerable delay was observed between radicle and plumule emergence in all six species. Warm stratification and/or GA3 promoted germination of all species.
  • All the tested species have epicotyl dormancy. Seeds of B. nitidissima and G. walkeri have non‐deep simple morphophysiological epicotyl dormancy, and the other four species have non‐deep physiological epicotyl dormancy. Differences in radicle and epicotyl dormancy promote synchronisation of germination to a favourable time for seedling development. Therefore, information on dormancy‐breaking and germination requirements of both radicle and epicotyl are needed to determine the kind of dormancy of a particular species.

  • Dormancy cycles are an important mechanism for avoiding seed germination under unfavourable periods for seedling establishment. This mechanism has been scarcely studied in tropical species. Here, we studied three tropical and perennial species of Xyris, X. asperula, X. subsetigera and X. trachyphylla, to investigate in situ longevity and the existence of seasonal seed dormancy cycles.
  • Seeds of three species of Xyris were buried in their natural habitat, with samples exhumed bimonthly for 18 months. Germination of exhumed seeds was assessed under a 12‐h photoperiod over a broad range of temperatures. Seeds of X. trachyphylla were also subjected to treatments to overcome secondary dormancy.
  • Seeds of all species are able to form a persistent seed bank and exhibit seasonal changes in germinability. Secondary dormancy was acquired during the rainy summer and was overcome during the subsequent dry season (autumn/winter). Desiccation partially overcomes secondary dormancy in X. trachyphylla seeds.
  • Soil seed bank persistence and synchronisation of seed germination under favourable conditions for seedling establishment contribute to the persistence and regeneration of X. asperula, X. subsetigera and X. trachyphylla in their natural environment.

Heretofore, no study has determined how germination of ingested seeds is affected by the kind (class) of dormancy nor by seed dormancy x seed size interaction. Thus, we aimed to determine the effects of seed size, kind of dormancy and their interaction on germination of defecated seeds using a meta-analysis. We collected data for 366 plant species in 97 plant families from 76 publications. In general, gut passage significantly increased germination percentage of defecated seeds by 5% compared with that of control seeds. Germination percentages of non-dormant, physiologically dormant, and morphologically/morphophysiologically dormant seeds (all water-permeable) significantly decreased after gut passage by 40, 18, and 14%, respectively, compared with control seeds (non-gut-passed). Changes in germination percentage of seeds with physical dormancy (water-impermeable) were positive, and gut passage increased germination by 69% compared with control seeds. Germination of small seeds decreased 8% after gut passage, whereas germination of both medium and large seeds increased by 18%. However, changes in germination percentage differed between categories of seed size in each class of dormancy. In physically dormant seeds, germination of all seed sizes improved after gut passage, and the magnitude of increase was higher for large than for medium and small seeds. Thus, gut passage increased germination of medium-size water-permeable seeds (physiologically dormant and morphologically/morphophysiologically dormant) more than it did for large and small seeds. However, gut-passage decreased or did not change the germination percentage of non-dormant seeds. Seed size and kind of dormancy should be included in studies on the effect of gut passage on germination.

The germination response of different sized seeds from individuals of a Mediterranean fire-prone shrub (Cistus ladanifer) was investigated in relation to pre-germination heating. A control (no heating), a low temperature during a short exposure time (50°C during 5 min), a high temperature during a short exposure time (100°C during 5 min) and a high temperature during a long exposure time (100°C during 15 min) were applied to seeds from different individual plants with different mean seed weight. These pre-germination treatments resemble natural germination scenarios for the studied species, absence of fire, low intensity pasture fire, typical Mediterranean shrub fire, and severe fire with high fuel load. Mean seed weight only showed a marginally significant positive correlation with the proportion of germinated seeds whatever the pre-germination treatment. These results suggest that seed dormancy is unrelated to seed size and that under the experimental conditions used in this study, the effect of seed size on seed germination is low. Nevertheless, larger seeds could be favoured in natural conditions, especially under the high competition scenario which arise after wildfires. Control seeds showed a negative correlation between seed size and germination velocity suggesting that lighter seeds could take advantage from early germination in recruitment events in the absence of wildfires. Nevertheless, even the lower pre-germination heating treatment turns this correlation in not significant, suggesting a strong selection pressure (unrelated to seed size) for early germination after fire events. In our study, different sized seeds of C. ladanifer seem to perform better under different germination scenarios suggesting that seed size variation could be maintained by the alternation of recruitments without wildfires and recruitments after wildfire events.
