Visceral larva migrans (VLM), caused by Toxocara canis larvae in humans, animals and birds, is now well documented throughout the world. Seven piglets were infected orally with 5 x 104 embryonated eggs and the migration and distribution of T. canis larvae in the tissues were evaluated. After artificial gastric juice digestion, larval yields at necropsy from different organs and muscles on days 1, 3, 7, 15 and 30 post-infection (DPI) revealed 3.05, 0.97, 0.21, 0.13, 0.05, 0.14% recovery from liver, lungs, heart, kidneys, skeletal muscles and brain tissues respectively, with a total of 2486 (4.97%) recovery from all tissues together. The highest number of larvae 1527 (3.05%) was recovered from the liver throughout the period (1-30 DPI), indicating a special affinity of larvae for the liver. Subsequently five mice were each infected orally with 5 g of infected pig liver and, after necropsy on 10 DPI, 20 +/- 3.62, 17 +/- 5.10, 3 +/- 1.26, 12 +/- 3.92 and 30 +/- 5.69 larvae were recovered from liver, lungs, heart, brain and muscles, respectively. Thus, primarily, the migratory potential and adaptation of T. canis larvae in porcine tissue was examined and, subsequently, their establishment in the second paratenic host, the mouse, has been successful. No influence of host sex on the migratory potential of T. canis larvae was observed. The related pathology caused by migratory larvae and its zoonotic significance through the consumption of raw or undercooked pork has been emphasized.  相似文献

Test mice have been selectively reared for high (H) or low (L) immune responses to Nematospiroides dubius. After secondary infection with N. dubius, the L mice voided ten times as many eggs in their faeces as the H mice, and at necropsy, 71% versus 20% of the inoculum of N. dubius were recovered as adult worms from the L and H mice respectively. Furthermore, N. dubius were more fecund in the L than in H mice. High or low immune responsiveness was not restricted to N. dubius infection in these mice but was also observed during Toxocara canis infection. The migration of T. canis larvae from gut via the liver to skeletal muscle and CNS was inhibited in H versus L mice. Many more larvae were recovered from the livers of H compared with L mice which was indicative of greater immunity in the H mice. The protective immune response in H compared with L mice to both N. dubius and T. canis included pronounced eosinophilia and elevated antiparasite antibody titres.  相似文献

The migration and distribution of Toxocara canis larvae in the tissues of Japanese quails, infected orally with 5 x 10(3) infective eggs, were studied, as well as the re-infectivity of these larvae in mice, inoculated with 50 larvae obtained from the liver of these quails. Post-infection, the highest concentrations of larvae were found to be present in the liver of quails while only a few migrated to other tissues like lungs, heart, muscle and brain. The migration and distribution of the larvae in the tissues of mice were studied by necropsy on days 6 and 12 post-infection. On both days the highest number of larvae, 11 and 10, were recovered from the carcase followed by six and seven from the leg muscles and four and eight from the brain, respectively. A few larvae were recovered from the liver, lungs and viscera. This implies that the larvae had a special affinity for the muscle and brain tissue of mice, unlike in the quails. The role of these larvae in relation to paratenism is discussed.  相似文献

In the present study, the initial developmental stage of Toxocara canis eggs and larvae, and number of recovered larvae from BALB/c mouse-infected organs are described. In vitro culture of T. canis detects the frequencies of interphasic, mitotic and embryonated eggs only within a 7-day period. Analysis by egg counting was carried out for 32 days. The results showed that at 7 days after cultivation, the frequency of larvae was 50.4% and that this frequency reached 52.8% in 32 days. In the experimental infection of BALB/c mice with T. canis, the number of recovered larvae statistically increased in the brain and liver, with doses of approximately 200 and 1000 eggs. After 7 days of infection, a larger number of larvae were obtained in the lung and liver, although a maximum amount was found in the brain after a 15- or 30-day post-infection period.  相似文献

Responses of eight adult cats to one or two infections with larvae of Toxocara canis were studied up to 39 days post infection (DPI). Clinically, all cats remained normal throughout the study. The major necropsy finding was multifocal, white to grey nodules mainly within the liver, lungs and kidneys; live larvae were found in liver nodules. Histologically, the nodules were eosinophilic granulomas. Granulomas containing a larval section were observed mainly within the liver. All infected cats had variably severe, eosinophilic arteritis and bronchiolitis and medial hypertrophy and hyperplasia of the pulmonary arteries. No inflammatory eye lesions were detected. Circulating eosinophil levels increased in all infected cats; peak values of 15,790 and 10,050 eosinophils microliters-1 were observed at 25 or 32 DPI in cats receiving a single or double infection, respectively. Bone marrow of all infected cats exhibited marked eosinophilic hyperplasia which did not correlate with the level of circulating eosinophilia. Thus, infection of cats by the larvae of T. canis causes disseminated eosinophilic and granulomatous disease with marked pulmonary artery and airway lesions.  相似文献

The effects of the consumption of flea faeces and non-viable eggs on larval development in the cat flea Ctenocephalides felis (Bouché) (Siphonaptera: Pulicidae) were investigated. Only 13.3% of larvae developed into adults when fed a diet of male or female flea faeces alone; however, 90% of larvae developed into adults when fed on flea faeces supplemented with non-viable flea eggs. When fed with non-viable eggs alone, larvae did not develop into adults. Nevertheless, non-viable eggs may provide critical supplemental nutrients, lacking in flea faeces and required for larval development. None of the larvae fed on flea faeces or non-viable eggs alone formed a cocoon. A diet of flea faeces alone significantly extended the second as well as third larval stadia compared to larvae fed on diets containing non-viable eggs. It is suggested that the cannibalism of fertile eggs may limit population growth in the cat flea.  相似文献

The migration and distribution of Ancylostoma caninum larvae in the tissues of chickens, infected orally with 1,000 larvae, were studied. Larval yield at necropsy from different organs after digestion with artificial gastric juice revealed a 62.9% recovery four hours after inoculation, followed by a sharp decline to 5.4% at 72 hours. Larvae were found in the heart within four hours, the lungs within eight hours and the liver within 12 to 18 hours but no larvae were recovered from the spleen, kidney or brain. Migration in the muscles of head, neck, thorax and abdomen was detected at 12 hours and was maximal at 36 hours. The establishment of patent infection in the definitive host was studied by feeding infected chicks to hookworm-free pups (one chick/pup) 48 hours, 7 days and 14 days after infection. The mean worm burden at necropsy was highest (15) in the pups fed with chicks 48 hours after infection and was three and nil in the other groups respectively.  相似文献

The aim of this note was to record for the first time the recovery of Toxocara canis larvae from tissues and organs of Rattus norvegicus (Berkenhout, 1769), Wistar strain, until the 60th day after experimental infection. Rats were orally infected with embryonated T. canis eggs, killed on days 3, 5, 8, 10, 15, 30, and 60 after inoculation and larvae were recovered from liver, lungs, kidneys, brain, and carcass after acid digestion, showing a pattern of migration similar of that previously observed in mice.  相似文献

The migratory pattern of Toxocara canis was investigated following infection of pigs with 60000 infective eggs. Groups of six pigs were slaughtered at 7, 14 and 28 days after infection (p.i.), and the number of larvae in selected organs and muscles was determined by digestion. A group of uninfected pigs was used as negative controls for blood parameters and weight gain. Toxocara canis migrated well in the pig, although the relative numbers of larvae recovered decreased significantly during the experiment. On day 7 p.i., high numbers of larvae were recovered from the lymph nodes around the small intestine and to some extent also from the lymph nodes around the large intestine, and from the lungs and the liver. On day 14, the majority of larvae were recovered from the lungs and the lymph nodes around the small intestine, and by day 28 p.i. most larvae were found in the lungs. Larvae were recovered from the brain on days 14 and 21, with a maximum on day 14 p.i. No larvae were found in the eyes. Severe pathological changes were observed in the liver and lungs, especially on day 14 p.i.; also, development of granulomas was observed in the kidneys. Finally, a strong specific antibody response towards T. canis L2/L3 ES products was observed from day 14 p.i. until termination of the experiment, and the maximum eosinophil response was observed 14 days p.i. The pig is a useful non-primate model for human visceral larva migrans, since T. canis migrate well and induce a strong immunological response in the pig. However, the importance of the pig as a paratenic host is probably minor, because of the relatively early death of most of the larvae.  相似文献

Under laboratory conditions, 2 modes of transmission of Eustrongylides ignotus (Nematoda: Dioctophymatoidea) to fish were identified. Eastern mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki) became infected after ingestion of either eggs of E. ignotus containing first-stage larvae or aquatic oligochaetes (Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri) containing third-stage larvae of E. ignotus. After removal from the uterus of gravid E. ignotus females and incubation for 17-28 days, depending on temperature, it was found that parasite eggs contained first-stage larvae that were infective to fish and oligochaetes. Larvae developed to the third stage in oligochaetes and were infective to fish 35-77 days postinfection (PI) and when fed to fish, developed to the fourth stage between 127 and 184 days PI. Eggs containing first-stage larvae fed directly to fish developed to the fourth stage between 84 and 105 days PI. The amount of time for development from the undifferentiated egg to the fourth-stage larva was 78-156 days shorter when fish ingested eggs containing first-stage larvae than when fish ingested oligochaetes containing third-stage larvae. Three species of large piscivorous fish, including black crappie (Pomoxis nigromaculatus), largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), and warmouth (Lepomis gulosus), were fed mosquitofish containing fourth-stage larvae. At necropsy, live E. ignotus larvae were recovered from all 3 species. Several fish had multiple infections after ingesting > 1 larva, indicating that bioaccumulation of the parasite in the food chain may occur.  相似文献

Capillaria philippinensis larvae from the digestive tract of a Northern Luzon freshwater fish (Hypselotris bipartita) experimentally exposed to embryonated eggs, were given by stomach tube to Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus). The larvae developed into adults within 10 to 11 days and female worms produced larvae within 13 to 14 days. These larvae developed into second generation adults by days 22 to 24 and the second generation females produced eggs that were present in the feces of the animal on the average 26 days after infection. Most females were oviparous but a few larviparous females were always present. The gerbils died on an average of 46 days after infection, with the highest numbers of worms recovered between days 36 and 46. All stages of the parasite were generally found at necropsy. Gerbils developed patent infections after receiving 2 or 3 laeval from fish, and 852 to 5,353 worms were recovered at necropsy. These studies show that autoinfection in an integral part of the life cycle of C. philippinensis, both initially and in maintaining the infection. The natural transmission of the parasite was demonstrated when H. bipartita from a lagoon in the endemic area were fed to gerbils and 3 became infected. The parasite can also be maintained in the laboratory by transfer of worms by stomach tube from the small intestines of an infected gerbil to a clean gerbil.  相似文献

During necropsy of a red fox (Vulpes vulpes) heart an adult, male Toxocara canis was found under the pericardium at the junction of the right ventricle and right atrium. The life cycle of T. canis is complex and includes tracheal and somatic migrations of larvae, and they can be found in many tissues throughout the host's body. However, it is rare for adult ascarids to be recovered outside of the small intestine. This is the first report of an adult T. canis inside the pericardial space.  相似文献

A sex pheromone for adult male oriental cockroaches Blatta orientalis was isolated from the faeces of adult virgin female oriental cockroaches. It elicited a sexual response at 10 pg and 1 ng with B. orientalis and Periplaneta americana adult males, respectively. The site of production appers to be the crop, oesophagus, and proventriculus. Electroantennogram responses of male antennae toward the isolated pheromone were greater than those of the female antennae. The adult male oriental cockroach also responded to the American cockroach sex pheromone. The isolated pheromone with a mol. wt of 232 may be similar to one of the components of the American cockroach sex pheromone.  相似文献

The role of the red fox Vulpes vulpes in the dissemination of eggs of Toxocara canis into the environment is considered with reference to female worm fecundity and egg output in the faeces of infected foxes collected from four localities in southern England. A significant positive correlation was found between female worm size and the number of eggs in the uterus but there was no significant relationship between T. canis worm numbers and egg output in fox faeces. Reliable estimates of worm burdens in foxes could not, therefore, be determined from faecal egg counts alone. The highest mean egg output of 2145.0 epg recorded from adult foxes indicated that fox cubs are not necessarily the main sources of environmental contamination with T. canis eggs. Saturated magnesium sulphate was found to be a more effective flotation solution than zinc sulphate and sodium chloride for recovering eggs from fox faecal samples.  相似文献

In a golden lion tamarin (Leontopithecus rosalia rosalia) colony kept indoors in a German zoo, two animals presented a sudden onset of reduced general condition, lethargy, and diarrhea. At animal capture for clinical examination, adult nematode stages were observed after stress‐induced defecation. Despite treatment, two golden lion tamarins died in the following 2 days. At necropsy, spirurid stages were found in the lungs and intestine. Additionally, adult Pterygodermatites spp. were identified in histopathological samples of intestine and pancreas, confirming the previous diagnosis. Upon diagnosis, all animals were treated with ivermectin (0.2 mg/kg; SC). Thereafter, the general condition of the golden lion tamarins improved, whereby some of them excreted spirurid nematodes over 3 days. Four weeks after treatment, 20 fecal samples from the colony were examined and proved negative for parasitic stages. Given that common German cockroaches (Blattella germanica) are suitable intermediate hosts of Pterygodermatites nycticebi, 30 specimens were collected from seven different locations around the golden lion tamarins housing. Third‐stage larvae of Pterygodermatites spp. were recovered from those cockroaches. Regular anthelmintic treatments, coprological screenings, and controls for intermediate hosts were recommended. More than 2 years later, P. nycticebi infection was diagnosed again histopathologically in an aye‐aye (Daubentonia madagascariensis) which suddenly died. Coprological analysis confirmed the presence of spirurid eggs. Due to prosimian primates' cockroach‐eating habits and given that total cockroach eradication proved impossible, continuous cockroach control strategies and regular treatments of primates are currently performed to prevent further P. nycticebi infections.  相似文献

The present study was conducted to better understand the immure response to Toxocara canis pneumonia in mice with preweaning nutritional deprivation. Breast-fed Swiss mice, undernourished due to large litter size (up to 15 pups) and paired controls with only 5-8 pups were used. At 21 days old, both groups were infected with T. canis larvae. Liver retinol, retinyl palmitate, and inflammatory infiltrate in lungs were compared in both groups. Significantly lower levels of retinol and retinyl palmitate in liver tissue confirmed the hypovitaminosis A (P < 0.0001 for both comparisons) in the nutritionally deprived animals. Histological analysis showed similar eosinophilic infiltration in both groups at day 3 but was significantly more severe in undernourished mice at day 20 post-infection (P = 0.01). The present findings indicate that preweaning undernourishment is associated with a more severe inflammation in response to T. canis pneumonia. It suggests that vitamin A deficiency that persists after nutritional rehabilitation, may contribute to the severity of T. canis infection. The authors suggest that nutritional status should be carefully investigated in patients with more severe clinical findings.  相似文献

When cultured alone or concurrently with Trichostrongylus colubriformis in sheep faeces, Ostertagia circumcincta produced fewer infective larvae per 100 eggs than did T. colubriformis. Averaged over five trials 60% of T. colubriformis eggs were recovered as infective larvae while for O. circumcincta the figure was only 39%. This result was observed for two strains of O. circumcincta and was independent of when larvae were harvested from culture (days 6-10 at 25 degrees C). The mortalities of both species occurred at the first and second larval stages. These observations are of concern when using larval differentiation from faecal culture to make quantitative estimates of worm egg numbers for each species present. Species such as T. colubriformis which have a low mortality during culture are likely to have their egg numbers overestimated when cultured with a species, like O. circumcincta, that suffers high mortality in culture.  相似文献

Faeces containing Trichostrongylus colubriformis and/or Ostertagia circumcincta eggs were used to provide four contaminations in each of 2 years on plots of browntop, Yorkshire fog, ryegrass, tall fescue, lucerne, chicory, cocksfoot, white clover, and prairie grass and in the second year a mixed sward of ryegrass/white clover. Third stage larvae were recovered from faeces and from four strata of herbage, 0–2.5, 2.5–5, 5–7.5 and >7.5 cm above the soil surface at 2, 4, 6, 8, 11, and 14 weeks after faeces were deposited on the swards. Herbage species had a significant (P &lt; 0.0001) effect on the number of larvae recovered. Greatest numbers of larvae, as indicated by ranking analysis, were recovered from Yorkshire fog, ryegrass, and cocksfoot and lowest numbers from white clover and lucerne. The difference between herbages in numbers of larvae recovered was due to the ‘‘development success’’, the ability of larvae to develop to the infective stage and migrate on to herbage, rather than ‘‘survival’’, the rate of population decline once on the herbage. Faecal degradation was most rapid from white clover and browntop, intermediate from tall fescue, lucerne, prairie grass, cocksfoot, and ryegrass, and slowest from Yorkshire fog swards. The numbers of larvae recovered from herbages were related (r2 = 0.59, P &lt; 0.05) with the faecal mass remaining. A greater proportion of the total larvae recovered from the herbage was recovered from the bottom stratum of Yorkshire fog and prairie grass than from white clover, with the other herbages intermediate, indicating that larvae had greater difficulty migrating up Yorkshire fog and prairie grass than the other herbage species. In most herbage species, despite more larvae being recovered from the lowest stratum, larval density (L3/kg herbage DM) was highest in the top stratum. This study has demonstrated that herbage species can have a significant impact on the population dynamics and vertical migration of T. colubriformis and O. circumcincta larvae.  相似文献

Investigations were carried out under operating conditions of Field Composting Factory in Brezno (Slovak Republic) to determine the effect of anaerobic stabilization of organic wastes from public areas on the survival of model helminth Toxocara canis and Ascaris suum eggs. Due to anaerobic conditions, low temperature, low C:N ratio and changes in physical and chemical properties of organic waste, less than 64% of A. suum eggs remained viable after 150 days of stabilisation. The anaerobic stabilisation had a greater effect on the viability of T. canis eggs than on A. suum eggs. The infectivity of T. canis eggs was confirmed by a follow-up experiment in laboratory mice. A small number of T. canis larvae were found in their brain and muscles on day 28 after infection. The results refer to the risks of dissemination, survival and potential spread of endoparasitic developmental stages in the environment through organic wastes subjected to low temperature stabilisation.  相似文献
