Attempts were made to reduce populations of San Jose scaleQuadraspidiotus perniciosus (Comstock) by releasing populations of the parasiteEncarsia (=Prospaltella) perniciosi Tower. Several releases were made, between May and November in both 1985 and 1986. TheEncarsia were released into 2 apple orchards infested with scale. Increases in the numbers ofEncarsia caught on sticky traps in these orchards, coupled with an increase from 2.3% to 9.1% in the overall level of parasitism of the scales, suggested that the released parasites had become established. Other natural enemies found associated with San Jose scale on apple in Kashmir included 3 parasites (Marietta carnesi Howard,Azotus kashmirensis Narayanan andAphytis paramaculicornis De Bach) and 5 predators, 4 of which were coccinellids (Chilocorus bijugus Muls,Pharoscymus flexibilis, Exochomus sp. andCoccinella septempunctata) and the remaining one was a chrysopid (Chrysoperla carnea).   相似文献

Summary An attempt to associate chemical and biological control has been realised in an orchard of apple trees contamined by San Jose Scale. Prospaltella perniciosi has been liberated two years ago in the hope of controling population densities of its host, after some years. In 1961, after one hivernal spray, unapplied in the narrow plot whereP. perniciosi was liberated, a spray program has been planned against plant-diseases: applescab and applemildew and many pests:Carpocapsa pomonella, several species of aphids and mites, Tortricids. Aphelinus mali was liberated to check an outbreak ofEriosoma lanigerum, late in the spring (june). The first experiment resulted in a sufficient control by means of fungicides and a good enough protection against insects, exceptCarpocapsa in the case of the apple variety “Reinette of Canada” (the most readily attacked by this pest). The evolution of population density ofP. perniocisi was not influenced by the control measures, but efficacity of parasitism was not yet sufficient to bring scale population beneath “tolerance-limits”.

Summary From a laboratory stock ofProspaltella perniciosi Tow. andP. fasciata malen. bred together on San Jose Scale on fruit ofCitrullus vulgaris, the Authors realized a continuous breeding on infested nursery-trees in a green house. The infested trees (mainly apple and pear trees) were then placed under different micro-climatic conditions and the life cycle of both parasites was studied thoroughly in these various locations. Principal results are the following: 1o P. perciosi lives in good conditions under the climate of Lyon country. Three or four generations occur during one year and the rate of parasitism is up to 80% on diapausing first stage larvae. 2o P. fasciata is able to displaceP. perniciosi under laboratory breeding conditions (27°C) but cannot survive winter in Lyon area. The efficiency of this parasite is always very variable because its cycle is not suitable fitted to that of its host.

The phenology of citricola scale, Coccus pseudomagnoliarum (Kuwana), and its associated parasitoid complex were studied on citrus in the San Joaquin Valley of central California over the period April 1995–March 1997. A total of 10,237 parasitoid specimens of 10 species were collected. Two of these species, Marietta mexicana (Howard) and Encyrtus lecaniorum (Mayr), each recovered from individually isolated scales, represent new parasitoid records for citricola scale. A third species, Encarsia citrinus citrinus (Craw), may represent a new parasitoid record, but this requires further confirmation because a single (male) specimen was recovered from individually isolated scales. The three most dominant parasitoid species, Coccophagus lycimnia (Walker), Metaphycus helvolus (Compere), and Metaphycus luteolus (Timberlake), accounted for the majority (>97%) of the specimens recovered. In contrast to the situation on citrus in southern California, where citricola scale is under effective biological control and is very rarely seen, citricola scale on citrus in the San Joaquin Valley is reemerging as a major pest, especially in groves employing integrated pest management with minimal use of broad-spectrum insecticides. Possible reasons uncovered in this study for the lack of effective biological control of citricola scale in the San Joaquin Valley include: (i) reduced presence of Metaphycus spp. because of hyperparasitism by the heteronomous hyperparasitoid C. lycimnia; (ii) absence of alternate hosts for those species of Metaphycus present; and (iii) absence of hosts of suitable size for Metaphycus at critical times of the year. Recommendations for improving the level of biological control in the San Joaquin Valley are discussed.  相似文献

Summary Six different strains ofProspaltella perniciosi have been tested since 1957 with regard to their efficacy as parasites of the San José scaleQuadraspidiotus perniciosus under the conditions of Western and Southern Switzerland. A Russian, a Chinese and a North-American strain from Illinois gave the best results both in laboratory rearing and when applied in experimental orchards. The Illinois strain achieved 20% parasitization already within the first year after its release. Both the Chinese and the Russian strains reached 40% of parasitization during the second year, and more than 80% during the third year. This was followed by a complete breakdown of the San-José scale population. These results were promising enough to justify tests on a larger scale in whichP. perniciosi is being released systematically on greater surfaces. The parasite can, apparently, survive even when the host population is small.   相似文献

Summary Investigations have been carried out in the Po' Valley (Italy) during 1964 to establish the number of generations of the San José scale and its parasiteProspaltella perniciosi Tow. It was found that the San José scale has three generations per year, while its parasite has six. The percent of parasitism attained in one year after parasite release was 60.Prospaltella hibernates as an egg in the first larval instar of its host.   相似文献

The parasitoid complex of brown soft scale, Coccus hesperidum L., a multivoltine soft scale, was determined in southern California citrus over the period February 2004–March 2006. The survey was conducted by placing brown soft scale-infested yucca leaves in the canopy of citrus trees and subsequently rearing individually isolated parasitized scales in the laboratory. A total of 14 species parasitized brown soft scale in the field, the most abundant ones belonging to the genus Metaphycus Mercet (75%). The most abundant parasitoid species was Metaphycus angustifrons Compere (38% parasitism), and this is a new record of establishment for this species in California. Coccophagus species accounted for only 11% parasitism. There were important spatio-temporal differences across the parasitoid complex survey locations. We also found that the five most abundant encyrtid parasitoid species showed preferences for scales of different sizes. Our results have implications for biological control of citricola scale, Coccus pseudomagnoliarum (Kuwana), an important pest of citrus in the San Joaquin Valley of central California. Notably, this species is nearly absent in southern California. Brown soft scale is considered to be an alternate host for parasitoids of citricola scale, a univoltine soft scale, at times when the latter species is unavailable for parasitism.  相似文献

A sudden and nearly synchronous emergence of the red tide forming dinoflagellate Cochlodinium along more than 800 km of California coastline was initially observed in late summer 2004. Thereafter high cell concentrations have been detected on an annual basis. Here, we present quantitative and semi-quantitative data indicating that Cochlodinium was uncommon in the phytoplankton community in California prior to 2004 and is now persisting as a more regular component and one that seasonally can cause red tides. The quantitative portion of this study was primarily conducted in Monterey Bay, where cell densities reached at least 6 × 104 cells L−1 during the initial outbreak. A semi-quantitative comparison of California coastal counties by the California Department of Health Services (CDHS) was also made: of the 15 counties surveyed (most with multiple sites per county), cells were detected only from Los Angeles County in the south to San Mateo County in the central region (seven counties), but not in the northern part of the state (six counties). Two counties in the central region of the state, San Luis Obispo and Santa Cruz, displayed intense and frequent periods of elevated Cochlodinium cell abundances. Although not observed in the state-wide CDHS survey, we occasionally found cells in San Diego County with densities up to 2.7 × 104 cells L−1. Though these colonial dinoflagellates have been recognized in California for over 80 years, with several “blooms” recorded prior to 2004, the species’ geographic range and abundance in recent years suggest significant shifts in the nearshore phytoplankton community of this region of the eastern Pacific.  相似文献

Previously undescribed notharctine primate fossils are reported from the early Eocene San Jose Formation, San Juan Basin, New Mexico, and the early Eocene Wasatch Formation, southern Wyoming. These collections include the most complete specimens yet discovered of the poorly known species Copelemur tutus and Copelemur praetutus; the first upper dentitions of Cantius angulatus and Cantius frugivorus from the type area of these taxa; and fossils attributable to two new notharctine species, Copelemur australotutus and Smilodectes gingerichi. These new fossils reveal that current ideas concerning notharctine phylogeny are incorrect. Two major, monophyletic clades are apparent within the subfamily: the tribe Copelemurini, consisting of the genera Copelemur and Smilodectes, and the tribe Notharctini, comprising the genera Cantius, Pelycodus, and Notharctus. Analysis of the paleobiogeographic distribution of the Copelemurini indicates that this clade was limited to more southerly regions of western North America during early Eocene time. Northward migration of more tropical habitats during the late Wasatchian and early Bridgerian in western North America, associated with an overall climatic warming trend through the early and middle Eocene, appears to have allowed several mammalian taxa, including Smilodectes, to extend their ranges northward during this time interval. Such taxa thus possess diachronous distributions and have been partly responsible for the long-standing confusion regarding the biostratigraphic correlation of early Eocene faunas from New Mexico with those from Wyoming. Based on several taxa which are also known from the Wasatchian of Wyoming, the age of the San Jose Formation appears to be middle Wasatchian.  相似文献

The effects of Nereis sp. on the flux of dissolved phosphate across the sediment-water interface has been studied in Palmones River estuary using benthic flux-chambers and intact cores. Diffusive fluxes of phosphate were calculated from pore water gradient concentration and compared with those obtained from benthic chambers experiments. The high abundance of Nereis in the upper sediment layers appears to play an important part in the dissolved oxygen profiles in the overlying water, but had no effect on the redox potential. A negative relationship was found between the Nereis abundance and the phosphate gradient; this gradient ranged between 40 µmol 1–1 cm–1 with 340 Nereis individuals m–2 and 20 µmol 1–1 cm–1 with 900 Nereis individuals m–2. The ratio of the in situ flux to the flux gradient concentration for dissolved phosphate increased with the abundance of Nereis (from 1.7 at low abundance to 5.8 at high abundance).  相似文献

Summary Practical efficiency ofP. perniciosi was studied in France in four various orchards situated in three districts selected according to the climate: an orchard of apple-trees at Chézy; an orchard of apple-trees and cherry-trees at Brignais (Lyonnais) and an orchard of peach-trees at Mandelieu in the mediterranean region. Every time, in spite of the chemical treatments realized during the year, the real rate of parasitism increased and consequently San José scale populations has been reduced. If results are confronted with those obtained at the same time in foreign countries, it is possible to see that the climate plays the first part in the determinism ofProspaltella's efficiency, but the chemical treatments interfere also for checking the active increase of parasite.   相似文献

Crabs are among the most conspicuous and ecologically important invertebrates of the large intertidal zones that characterize estuarine and protected coastal areas in temperate regions. The habitat, population structure and breeding cycle of Chasmagnathus granulatus (Brachyura: Varunidae), a semiterrestrial burrowing crab endemic to the warm temperate coasts of the Southwestern Atlantic, were studied in San Antonio Bay (Argentina), near the southern limit of its range. San Antonio Bay has no freshwater input, winter is relatively colder, and summer warmer, than northern habitats of this species. Crabs lived both in vegetated and unvegetated zones, but density and sex ratio varied among dates and zones. The maximum observed density was 136 crabs/m2 , the maximum carapace width (CW) was 32 mm (males) and 29.8 mm (females), ovigerous females were found only in November and January, and the smallest ovigerous female measured 17 mm CW. The population structure, spatial distribution, and recruitment pattern of C. granulatusdid not differ between San Antonio Bay and northern habitats. The higher density, smaller maximum size and shorter reproductive cycle observed in San Antonio cannot be atributed to changes associated with a latitudinal cline and other factors, such as thermal amplitude and food availability, need to be studied.  相似文献

The Salton Sea is one of the few saline, inland lakes in the world with a population of barnacles, Balanus amphitrite. It is also one of California’s most impaired water bodies due to excessive nutrient loading which leads to phytoplankton blooms and low dissolved oxygen. Currently, B. amphitrite growth is limited due to lack of hard substrate in and around the Sea. We have hypothesized that artificial substrate could support the growth of B. amphitrite and their filter-feeding would lead to improved water quality. Periodic harvesting of the barnacles would result in the permanent removal of nitrogen and phosphorus from the Sea. A 44-day in-situ experiment was carried out in the Salton Sea to assess the rate of barnacle growth and phosphorus and nitrogen sequestration on burlap sheets suspended vertically from a floating line. Burlap panels were collected weekly and the barnacles analyzed for Ca, total-P, inorganic-P, total-N, total-C, CaCO3, and organic matter content. After 44 days of growth, the barnacle mats weighed 7.4 kg m−2 on a dry weight basis, with 80% of the mass as shell material. The nutrient sequestration was 9.4 g P m−2 and 100 g N m−2. Approximately half of the P was inorganic and appears to be coprecipitated with the calcium carbonate shell material. Results indicate that harvesting barnacles grown on artificial substrate in the Salton Sea would not be an effective method for removing N or P from the lake because of the relative proportions of shell material and organic material. Actin like protein, extracted and purified fromVigna radiata (mung bean) seedling, has been found to give positive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay with mouse monoclonal antiactin antibody. In vivo studies show that cytochalasin B at sublethal dose inhibits the chromosomal movement at metaphase stage during germination. Fromin vitro studies it is found that the actin like protein isolated from mung bean seedling has a cytochalasin B binding property with a Kd value 1.2 × 10−5 M. From these two specific observations it appears probable that the biological function of mung bean actin like protein is to take part in cell division process directly or indirectly during the time of seedling development.  相似文献

Populus euphratica is a salt-tolerant tree species growing in semi-arid saline areas. A Na+/H+ antiporter gene was successfully isolated from this species through RACE cloning, and named PeSOS1. The isolated cDNA was 3665 bp long and contained a 3438 bp open reading frame that was predicted to encode a 127-kDa protein with 12 hypothetical transmembrane domains in the N-terminal part and a long hydrophilic cytoplasmic tail in the C-terminal part. The amino acid sequence of this PeSOS1 gene showed 64% identity with the previously isolated SOS1 gene from the glycophyte Arabidopsis thaliana. The level of protein expressed by PeSOS1 in the leaves of P. euphratica was significantly up-regulated in the presence of high (200 mM) concentrations of NaCl, while the mRNA level in the leaves remained relatively constant. Immunoanalysis suggested that the protein encoded by PeSOS1 is localized in the plasma membrane. Expression of PeSOS1 partially suppressed the salt sensitive phenotypes of the EP432 bacterial strain, which lacks the activity of the two Na+/H+ antiporters EcNhaA and EcNhaB. These results suggest that PeSOS1 may play an essential role in the salt tolerance of P. euphratica and may be useful for improving salt tolerance in other tree species. The nucleotide sequence of a plasmid-borne 3.9 kb XhoI-SmaI fragment comprising the 3-region of the nifM gene, the nifL and nifA genes and the 5-region of nifB gene of Enterobacter agglomerans was determined. The genes were identified by their homology to the corresponding nif genes of Klebsiella pneumoniae. A typical 54-dependent promoter and a consensus NtrC-binding motif were identified upstream of nifL. The predicted amino acid sequence of NifL showed close similarities to NifL of K. pneumoniae and Azotobacter vinelandii. However, no histidine residue was found to correspond to histidine-304 of A. vinelandii NifL, which had been proposed to be required for the repressor activity of NifL. The NifA sequence with a putative DNA binding motif (Q(X3) A (X3) G (X5)I) and an ATP binding site in the C-terminal and central domains, respectively, resembles that of other known NifA proteins. The function of the nifL and nifA genes was demonstrated in vivo using a binary plasmid system by their ability to activate a nifH promoter-lacZ fusion at different temperatures and concentrations of NH 4 + . Maximal promoter activity occurred at 25°C, and it appears that the sensitivity of NifA to elevated temperatures is independent of NifL. The expression of nifL inhibited promoter activity in the presence of NifA when the initial NH 4 + concentration in the medium exceeded 4 mM.Communicated by H. Böhme  相似文献

Senecio jacobaea, a poisonous weed from Eurasia, was brought under successful biological control in the Ft. Bragg, California area by 1976, through the combined action of the defoliating cinnabar moth (Tyria jacobaeae) and a root feeding flea beetle (Longitarsus jacobaeae). In 1987, 4 previously infested Ft. Bragg sites (3 sites where control had been documented and another unstudied site) were examined.Senecio jacobaea densities at these sites were 0.0, 0.0, 0.01 and 0.18 plants/m2, indicating both continued and improved control of the weed. The flea beetle and the cinnabar moth both persist at the sites, despite very low numbers ofS. jacobaea plants. The control ofS. jacobaea has resulted in the return of near natural vegetation at the 2 coastal prairie sites and regained productivity at the 2 pasture sites. c/o American Embassy APO San Francisco 96301  相似文献

Summary The presence and regional localization of voltagegated ion channels on taste cells inNecturus maculosus were studied. Lingual epithelium was dissected from the animal and placed in a modified Ussing chamber such that individual taste cells could be impaled with intracellular microelectrodes and the chemical environment of the apical and basolateral membranes of cells could be strictly controlled. That is, solutions bathing the the mucosal and serosal surfaces of the epithelium could be exchanged independently and the effects of pharmacological agents could be tested selectively on the apical or basolateral membranes of taste cells. In the presence of amphibian physiological saline, action potentials were elicited by passing brief depolarizing current pulses through the recording electrode. Action potentials provided a convenient assay of voltage-gated ion channels. As in other excitable tissues, blocking current through Na+, K+, or Ca2+ channels had predictable and consistent effects on the shape and magnitude of the action potential. A series of experiments was conducted in which the shape and duration of regenerative action potentials were monitored when the ionic composition was altered and/or pharmacological blocking agents were added to the mucosal or to the serosal chamber. We have found the following: (1) voltage-gated K+ channels (delayed rectifier) are found predominately, if not exclusively, on the chemoreceptive apical membrane; (ii) voltage-gated Na+ and Ca2+ channels are found on the apical (chemoreceptive) and basolateral (synaptic) membrane; (iii) there is a K+ leak channel on the basolateral membrane which appears to vary seasonally in its sensitivity to TEA. The nonuniform distribution of voltage-gated K+ channels and their predominance on the apical membrane may be important in taste transduction: alterations in apical K+ conductance may underlie receptor potentials ellicted by rapid stimuli.  相似文献

The biology of islands differs from that of large land masses in having less complex ecosystems. Introduced exotic weeds are often a major threat to fragile island ecosystems because of their expansion into habitats previously occupied by endemic species. San Clemente Island, 120 km off the California coastline, is an example of this process in which numerous exotic weed species have been introduced and some are endangering the native flora. Crown rust of oats caused by Puccinia coronata f.sp. avenae was investigated as a potential biocontrol agent against two wild oat species, Avena barbata and Avena fatua, introduced on San Clemente Island. Epidemiology and virulence of this rust were studied. The island was surveyed from 1995 to 1998 for occurrence of P. coronata on wild oats. Wild oats were found sprouting in the northern part of the island shortly after autumn rainfall and subsequently covered the main grasslands of the island. The rust also appeared first on the northern part of the island and progressively spread south. However, disease severities in the south were considerably lower than those in the north. Diverse virulence types, although related to Californian and Mexican forms, were detected among the isolates. The potential use of P. coronata as an augmentative biocontrol agent for wild oat species on San Clemente Island is discussed.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to assess the influence of toxic substances with different modes of action on a two-species system: an aphid-specific parasitoid, Aphidius ervi Haliday, feeding on the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris). The instantaneous rate of population increase (ri) was used as a measure of population level toxic effect in this study. The toxicants evaluated were imidacloprid, a nonpersistent neurotoxic insecticide, and cadmium, a chronic pollutant with a tendency to accumulate. We evaluated the effects of cadmium and imidacloprid on A. pisum and A. ervi because both toxicants can occur together in polluted areas where crops are grown. Cadmium (200 or 400 mg kg−1 dry weight soil) and imidacloprid (4 or 40 g a.i. ha−1) were applied to soil contained in plastic pots in which broad bean plants, Vicia faba L., were grown. Results of this study indicated that cadmium at the concentrations tested, reduced population growth rate of the pea aphid. Imidacloprid also reduced aphid growth rate, but only at the highest concentration tested (40 g a.i. ha−1). Combinations of cadmium and imidacloprid had the greatest impact on aphid growth rate. Imidacloprid alone had no effect on population growth rate of the parasitoid. However, cadmium alone or in combination with imidacloprid had a negative impact on A. ervi by reducing population growth rate 77%. These results indicate that negative impacts on parasitoids may occur in areas where cadmium contamination is present and imidacloprid is used to control aphids.  相似文献
