Anhydrobiosis in bdelloid species, populations and individuals   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Bdelloid rotifers are aquatic microinvertebrates common in waterbodies and in unstable "terrestrial" habitats, such as mossesand lichens. The key to the adaptability to live in unstablehabitats is their capacity to tolerate habitat desiccation throughanhydrobiosis, that is assumed apomorphic to the taxon. Thelife history traits of some "moss" and "water" species of bdelloidare compared, showing that the water species have shorter lifespan, higher fecundity and earlier age at first reproductionthan the moss species. These traits are discussed in the lightof current life history theories. Contrary to the assumptionsof the models, anhydrobiosis of bdelloids does not appear toimply energy demand. Past research on bdelloid anhydrobiosisis briefly reviewed, focusing on the factors that affect anhydrobiosissuccess, like morphological and physiological adjustments, andon the effect of events of anhydrobiosis during life time. Desiccationproduces a time shift on the age of the bdelloid, which disregardsthe time spent as anhydrobiotic, following the so-called "SleepingBeauty" model. Average fecundity is never found to decreaseas a consequence of anhydrobiosis, but is either equal or evenhigher than that of a hydrated rotifer. Bdelloid populationsseem to benefit from anhydrobiosis; fitness of a bdelloid isfound to decline, if populations are maintained hydrated forseveral generations, but not if populations are cyclically desiccated.We hypothesize that anhydrobiosis can be an essential eventfor long-term survival of bdelloid populations.  相似文献

轮虫动物门蛭态亚纲轮虫由于其严格的孤雌生殖和低湿休眠特性而成为吸引各领域学者研究的重要类群。研究对2018年在珠海万山群岛采集的苔藓样品进行观察,发现蛭态轮虫中国新记录种环颈敖突轮虫Otostephanos torquatus Bryce, 1913。目前国内缺少对该蛭态轮虫的详细形态描述,文章通过对该种的形态观察以及咀嚼器扫描电镜拍摄,阐述环颈敖突轮虫的主要分类特征。该物种重要分类依据为内腔里含有食物泡,轮盘带有特殊环状结构,上唇裂片呈三角形及裂片高度低于头冠高度,咀嚼器齿式7/7。通过检测该轮虫的COⅠ序列,与基因库中已有同科同属相似种的COⅠ基因序列聚类对比,证明了该种属于敖突轮属的遗传位置。相较于其他国家对蛭态轮虫的研究成果及其在进化研究中的重要地位,我国学者应该加强对蛭态轮虫的研究探索。  相似文献

Bdelloid rotifers, darwinulid ostracods and some oribatid mites have been called 'ancient asexuals' as they speciated and survived over long-term evolutionary timescale without sexual recombination. Data on their genetic diversification are contrasting: within-species diversification is present mostly at a continental scale in a parthenogenetic oribatid mite, whereas almost no genetic diversification at all seems to occur within darwinulid ostracod species. Strangely enough, no clear data for bdelloid rotifers are available so far. In this paper, we analyse partial COI mtDNA sequences to show that a bdelloid rotifer, Philodina flaviceps, so far considered a single traditional morphological species, has actually been able to diversify into at least nine distinct evolutionary entities, with genetic distances between lineages comparable with those between different traditional species within the same genus. We discovered that local coexistence of such different independent lineages is very common: up to four lineages were found in a same stream, and up to three in a single moss sample of 5 cm(2). In contrast to the large-scale geographic pattern that has recently been reported in the oribatid mite, the spatial distribution of the bdelloid lineages provided evidence of micro-phylogeographic patterns. If the mtDNA diversity indicates that the lineages are independent and represent sympatric cryptic species within P. flaviceps, then the actual bdelloid diversity can be expected to be much greater than that recognized today.  相似文献

Aim Organisms smaller than 2 mm appear not to follow the spatial patterns in richness and diversity commonly observed in macroscopic organisms. We describe spatial patterns in species diversity in a group of microscopic organisms, bdelloid rotifers, living in moss and lichen patches, in order to test the hypotheses of no relationship between species richness and composition and spatial gradients, suggested by previously published patterns in microscopic organisms. Location Moss and lichen patches as habitats for bdelloids, on high‐elevation peaks at altitudes between 2984 and 4527 m a.s.l. across the Italian, French and Swiss Alps, with distances among sample sites ranging from 1 m to 420 km, in comparison with lower‐elevation samples at altitudes from 850 to 1810 m a.s.l. Methods We sampled species assemblages of bdelloid rotifers living in isolated moss and lichen patches in 47 sites. We described the observed α, β and γ diversities; the heterogeneity of species assemblages; and the estimated number of species (incidence‐based coverage estimator). Patterns in species distribution were analysed at three different levels: (1) habitat, comparing species richness on moss and lichen substrates, testing differences in α diversity and heterogeneity (anova ), species composition (analysis of similarities test), and γ diversity (rarefaction curves); (2) altitude, comparing the observed richness with previously published data from locations well below 2000 m; and (3) distances between sites, correlating the matrix of Jaccard dissimilarities and the matrix of geographical distances with a Mantel test. Results Both species richness and species composition of bdelloid rotifers differed significantly between mosses and lichens at high elevations, but no difference was found in the heterogeneity of species assemblages. Alpha diversity was significantly lower at high‐elevation than at low‐elevation sites, but the estimated number of species was not reduced when compared with sites at low elevations. Geographical distance between sites had no effect on species composition in either mosses or lichens. The distribution of species was highly heterogeneous, with a low similarity among assemblages. Main conclusions As expected, bdelloids appear to occupy habitats selectively. The altitudinal gradient in species richness for bdelloid rotifers is limited to a decrease in α diversity only; such a decrease is not caused by a lower number of species (low γ diversity) being able to tolerate harsh conditions, and high‐altitude species are not a subset of species living at lower elevations. The observed values of α, β and γ diversity at high altitudes in the Alps are compatible with the scenario of a very low number of available propagules because of the low density of patches of favourable habitat. Our results suggest that the geographical distribution of animals, and therefore biodiversity patterns, may be strongly influenced by animal size, as small organisms such as bdelloids appear to show spatial patterns that differ from those known in larger animals. Differences in body size should be taken into account carefully in future studies of biodiversity patterns.  相似文献

One of the difficulties in working with bdelloid rotifers is to extract them from the substratum. In the present paper a method is suggested to separate moss-dwelling bdelloids and other animals quantitatively from their habitat. By this procedure it is possible to identify the entire spectrum of species and to calculate exactly their individual densities per unit area or dry weight of moss.  相似文献

Aim General patterns of biodiversity, such as latitudinal gradients and species‐area relationships, are found consistently in a wide range of organisms, but recent results for protist diversity suggest that organisms shorter than 2 mm do not display such patterns. We tested this prediction in bdelloid rotifers, pluricellular metazoans smaller than 2 mm, but with size and ecology comparable to protists. Location A single valley in northern Italy was surveyed in detail and compared to all available faunistic data on bdelloids worldwide. Methods We analysed 171 local assemblages of bdelloid rotifers living in 5 systems of dry mosses and submerged mosses in running water and in lakes. We compared patterns of alpha, beta, and gamma diversity, and nestedness of metacommunities, with those known from protists and larger organisms. Results Bdelloid rotifers showed low local species richness (alpha diversity), with strong habitat selection, as observed in larger organisms. The number of species differed among systems, with a higher number of species in dry than in aquatic mosses. There was no hierarchical structure or exclusion of species in the metacommunity pattern within each system. Local diversity for the entire valley was surprisingly high compared with worldwide bdelloid diversity, similar to observed patterns in protists. Main Conclusions Bdelloid rotifers have some of the peculiarities of protist biodiversity, although at slightly different spatial scales, thus confirming the idea of a major change in biodiversity patterns among organisms shorter than 2 mm. However, bdelloids show stronger habitat selection than protists. We suggest two possible explanations for the observed patterns: (1) dispersal is very rare, and not all bdelloid clones are arriving everywhere; and (2) dispersal is effective in displacing propagules, but environmental heterogeneity is very high and prevents many species from colonizing a given patch of moss.  相似文献

The meiofaunal tardigrades Milnesium cfr. tardigradum, Echiniscus sp., and Macrobiotus sp. were extracted from high altitude moss and volcanic scoria samples on sub-Antarctic Marion Island. Gut contents of mounted Milnesium provided forensic evidence of a previously ignored diverse and abundant meiofauna including trophi of bdelloid rotifers, mouthparts and entire individuals of Diphascon sp. Why organisms diversify into discrete species instead of showing a continuum of genotypic and phenotypic forms is an important yet rarely studied question in speciation biology. Does species discreteness come from adaptation to fill discrete niches or from interspecific gaps generated by reproductive isolation? We investigate the importance of reproductive isolation by comparing genetic discreteness, in terms of intra‐ and interspecific variation, between facultatively sexual monogonont rotifers and obligately asexual bdelloid rotifers. We calculated the age (phylogenetic distance) and average pairwise genetic distance (raw distance) within and among evolutionarily significant units of diversity in six bdelloid clades and seven monogonont clades sampled for 4211 individuals in total. We find that monogonont species are more discrete than bdelloid species with respect to divergence between species but exhibit similar levels of intraspecific variation (species cohesiveness). This pattern arises because bdelloids have diversified into discrete genetic clusters at a faster net rate than monogononts. Although sampling biases or differences in ecology that are independent of sexuality might also affect these patterns, the results are consistent with the hypothesis that bdelloids diversified at a faster rate into less discrete species because their diversification does not depend on the evolution of reproductive isolation.  相似文献

Species concepts and definitions have been a long-standing debate in evolutionary biology since before Darwin, and almost all proposed solutions are based upon grouping and clustering, with species conceived as somehow biological distinct entities, originated and maintained mainly by reproductive isolation. Lacking reproductive exchange, asexual organisms such as bdelloid rotifers, the best-supported clade of so-called 'ancient asexuals', pose an interesting challenge to debates over the reality of species. However, few data are available on bdelloid rotifers. The only evidence has been that bdelloid species have been more consistently recognised than in their sister sexual group, the monogonont rotifers, across successive taxonomic treatments, but this is confounded by the much lesser degree of taxonomic interest in bdelloids. We applied geometric morphometrics analyses on shape and size of hard masticatory pieces, named trophi, of 1420 bdelloids, belonging to 48 populations of eight traditional species, to test the hypothesis of recognisability of bdelloids. Our morphological analysis confirms that traditional bdelloid species are separated distinct entities, possessing trophi morphologies divided by gaps between taxa, similar to patterns of morphological features in sexually reproducing organisms. In common with most microscopic understudied organisms, bdelloid rotifers harbour much previously undescribed diversity: we found significant differences in trophi morphology within traditional species, revealing the existence of cryptic taxa, similar to those also found in facultatively sexual monogonont rotifers. We confirm that recognisability in bdelloids is not qualitatively different from other small understudied animals such as monogononts, and that sexual versus asexual reproduction does not lead to differences in morphological diversity patterns, as previously suggested based on interpretation of taxonomic revisions.  相似文献

Rotifers of Class Bdelloidea are abundant freshwater invertebrates known for their remarkable ability to survive desiccation and their lack of males and meiosis. Sequencing and annotation of approximately 50-kb regions containing the four hsp82 heat shock genes of the bdelloid Philodina roseola, each located on a separate chromosome, have suggested that its genome is that of a degenerate tetraploid. In order to determine whether a similar structure exists in a bdelloid distantly related to P. roseola and if degenerate tetraploidy was established before the two species separated, we sequenced regions containing the hsp82 genes of a bdelloid belonging to a different family, Adineta vaga, and the histone gene clusters of P. roseola and A. vaga. Our findings are entirely consistent with degenerate tetraploidy and show that it was established before the two bdelloid families diverged and therefore probably before the bdelloid radiation.  相似文献

Rotifers of Class Bdelloidea are remarkable in having evolved for millions of years, apparently without males and meiosis. In addition, they are unusually resistant to desiccation and ionizing radiation and are able to repair hundreds of radiation-induced DNA double-strand breaks per genome with little effect on viability or reproduction. Because specific histone H2A variants are involved in DSB repair and certain meiotic processes in other eukaryotes, we investigated the histone H2A genes and proteins of two bdelloid species. Genomic libraries were built and probed to identify histone H2A genes in Adineta vaga and Philodina roseola, species representing two different bdelloid families. The expressed H2A proteins were visualized on SDS-PAGE gels and identified by tandem mass spectrometry. We find that neither the core histone H2A, present in nearly all other eukaryotes, nor the H2AX variant, a ubiquitous component of the eukaryotic DSB repair machinery, are present in bdelloid rotifers. Instead, they are replaced by unusual histone H2A variants of higher mass. In contrast, a species of rotifer belonging to the facultatively sexual, desiccation- and radiation-intolerant sister class of bdelloid rotifers, the monogononts, contains a canonical core histone H2A and appears to lack the bdelloid H2A variant genes. Applying phylogenetic tools, we demonstrate that the bdelloid-specific H2A variants arose as distinct lineages from canonical H2A separate from those leading to the H2AX and H2AZ variants. The replacement of core H2A and H2AX in bdelloid rotifers by previously uncharacterized H2A variants with extended carboxy-terminal tails is further evidence for evolutionary diversity within this class of histone H2A genes and may represent adaptation to unusual features specific to bdelloid rotifers.  相似文献

SUMMARY. The bdelloid rotifers and nematodes of a small clean watercourse in the area surrounding the Po river near Parma have been studied. The samples were collected at two sites 400 m apart. The species found in twelve collections of benthos between May 1977 and June 1978 were eighteen belonging to Bdelloidea and forty-seven to Nematoda (Tylenchida have not been considered). Nearly all the bdelloid species were oligosaprobic or beta-mesosaprobic; the Shannon index of diversity was 3.0 at the first site and 2.4 at the second. Among the Nematoda the dominant species were Paraplectonema pedunculatum and Paraphanolaimus anisitsi which were not previously recorded for Italy. Nearly all nematodes are microphagous; predators represent only 10% of collected specimens. Polluted water indicator species (Secernentia group) were only 3.5% of the total nematodes recorded. Most rotifers and nematodes did not show seasonal fluctuations in numbers. The two sampling sites do not seem to have substantial differences in the taxocoenosis of Rotifera and Nematoda; their percentage of similarity is 69% and 79% for the two classes respectively.  相似文献

Peat moss processing plant workers are exposed to high concentrations of bioaerosols. Although mycobacteria have been cultured from peat moss, no study has examined the workers' exposure to mycobacterial bioaerosols. We evaluated the presence of mycobacteria in air samples from peat moss processing plants using molecular biology approaches (cloning-sequencing and polymerase chain reaction (PCR)) and the workers exposure using immunoglobulin G (IgG) complexes to mycobacteria. In addition, species detected in air samples and in peat moss were compared. Two peat moss processing plants were chosen among 14 previously studied. A total of 49 clones were sequenced. Real-time PCR was also performed on the same air samples to evaluate the airborne concentration of mycobacteria and estimate exposure levels. Several Mycobacterium species were present in the air samples (M. malmoense, M. smegmatis, M. graceum, M. bohemicum, and M. interjectum). Mycobacterium avium was recovered by culture in peat moss but not in the air using the molecular approach. Total airborne Mycobacterium concentration was estimated at 8.2 x 10(8)/m3. Workers had IgG against the mycobacterial mix and M. avium, suggesting significant exposure. The findings from air samples, supported by IgG measurements, demonstrate that peat moss processing plant workers are exposed to mycobacteria in addition to other biological agents.  相似文献

Sexual reproduction is costly, but it is nearly ubiquitous among plants and animals, whereas obligately asexual taxa are rare and almost always short-lived. The Red Queen hypothesis proposes that sex overcomes its costs by enabling organisms to keep pace with coevolving parasites and pathogens. If so, the few cases of stable long-term asexuality ought to be found in groups whose coevolutionary interactions with parasites are unusually weak. In theory, antagonistic coevolution will be attenuated if hosts disperse among patches within a metapopulation separately from parasites and more rapidly. We examined whether these conditions are met in natural communities of bdelloid rotifers, one of the longest-lived asexual lineages. At any life stage, these microscopic invertebrates can tolerate the complete desiccation of their ephemeral freshwater habitats, surviving as dormant propagules that are readily carried by the wind. In our field experiments, desiccation and wind transport enabled bdelloids to disperse independently of multiple fungal parasites, in both time and space. Surveys of bdelloid communities in unmanipulated moss patches confirmed that fungal parasitism was negatively correlated with extended drought and increasing height (exposure to wind). Bdelloid ecology therefore matches a key condition of models in which asexuals persist through spatio-temporal decoupling from coevolving enemies.  相似文献

Here we report on the occurrence and position of introns found in three genes of rotifers. A region of the gene for the TATA-box binding protein was examined in three species of Bdelloidea and one of Monogononta. There are two introns in both copies of this gene present in each of the three bdelloids examined – one at a position where introns occur in other eukaryotes and the other at a novel position; the monogonont has no introns in the region examined. A region of the gene encoding the 82 kD heat shock protein was examined in 10 species, with every rotifer class represented. Introns were found in only two species, both bdelloids: one of the species has an intron in all three copies of the gene; the other has an intron in only one of the three copies. Both introns occur at novel positions. The gene for triosephosphate isomerase was examined in one bdelloid. Both copies of the gene in this species contain introns, all at conserved positions: one copy contains five introns, the other copy three. These observations demonstrate the presence of introns in bdelloid rotifers, some in conserved positions, others apparently newly arisen during bdelloid evolution.  相似文献

Rotifers of class Bdelloidea, a group of aquatic invertebrates in which males and meiosis have never been documented, are also unusual in their lack of multicopy LINE-like and gypsy-like retrotransposons, groups inhabiting the genomes of nearly all other metazoans. Bdelloids do contain numerous DNA transposons, both intact and decayed, and domesticated Penelope-like retroelements Athena, concentrated at telomeric regions. Here we describe two LTR retrotransposons, each found at low copy number in a different bdelloid species, which define a clade different from previously known clades of LTR retrotransposons. Like bdelloid DNA transposons and Athena, these elements are found preferentially in telomeric regions. Unlike bdelloid DNA transposons, many of which are decayed, the newly described elements, named Vesta and Juno, inhabiting the genomes of Philodina roseola and Adineta vaga, respectively, appear to be intact and represent recent insertions, possibly from an exogenous source. We describe the retrovirus-like structure of the new elements, containing gag, pol, and env-like open reading frames, and discuss their possible origins, transmission, and behavior in bdelloid genomes.  相似文献
