In response to Thiel's (1975). hypothesis that the food-limited deep sea is a small organism habitat, further data on average size of individuals representing various deep-sea taxa are presented. Our data were gathered with trawls and box corers between 200 and 5000 meters, in the western North Atlantic. For echinoderms, decapods and macrofauna there appears to be no steady, logarithmic decline in size with increasing depth, but fishes are bigger – deeper.  相似文献

As the most widespread seagrass in temperate waters of the Northern Hemisphere, Zostera marina provides a unique opportunity to investigate the extent to which the historical legacy of the last glacial maximum (LGM18 000-10 000 years bp) is detectable in modern population genetic structure. We used sequences from the nuclear rDNA-internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and chloroplast matK-intron, and nine microsatellite loci to survey 49 populations (> 2000 individuals) from throughout the species' range. Minimal sequence variation between Pacific and Atlantic populations combined with biogeographical groupings derived from the microsatellite data, suggest that the trans-Arctic connection is currently open. The east Pacific and west Atlantic are more connected than either is to the east Atlantic. Allelic richness was almost two-fold higher in the Pacific. Populations from putative Atlantic refugia now represent the southern edges of the distribution and are not genetically diverse. Unexpectedly, the highest allelic diversity was observed in the North Sea-Wadden Sea-southwest Baltic region. Except for the Mediterranean and Black Seas, significant isolation-by-distance was found from ~150 to 5000 km. A transition from weak to strong isolation-by-distance occurred at ~150 km among northern European populations suggesting this scale as the natural limit for dispersal within the metapopulation. Links between historical and contemporary processes are discussed in terms of the projected effects of climate change on coastal marine plants. The identification of a high genetic diversity hotspot in Northern Europe provides a basis for restoration decisions.  相似文献

The sand goby Pomatoschistus minutus is a major component of marine shelf and estuarine food webs and an important study organism in behavioural research. Yet, despite the sand goby's significance, its past and present patterns of migration and gene flow are poorly understood. Here we use the mtDNA control region and parts of the flanking tRNA genes of 63 fish from six localities in the Adriatic (Eastern Mediterranean), Western Mediterranean, Atlantic, and North Sea to investigate the phylogeography of this gobiid. Phylogenetic analyses and population genetics statistics reveal the existence of an Evolutionarily Significant Unit, sensu Moritz (1994), in the Adriatic and another in the Western Mediterranean, Atlantic, and North Sea. A possible biogeographical scenario for the separation of the ancestral population is that sand gobies in the Adriatic and Western Mediterranean split between 10,000 and 5000 years ago when due to the rise in sea temperature they migrated northwards and were bisected by the Italian peninsula. A testable prediction of this scenario is that sand gobies from the Western Mediterranean, Adriatic, and Aegean form three reciprocally monophyletic groups which are the descendants of a three-way diversification event.  相似文献

There are two peat fields, the Maohebei peat field and Daziying peat field, both situated in the delta of the lower reaches of the Liao River in the Eastern Hebei Plain, North China. The peat bogs were deposited at 10000–3500 years ago. From the point view of vegetational history, the pollen assemblage zones correlated with the radiocarbon dating materials are established. On this basis the profile may be divided into three zonation systems. Zone M-l, 10000–9000 14C yr. BP. The temperate needle leaf and deciduous woodlots scattered among herbs, with a mild and cool climate. It can be correlated to the Boreal or the Anathermal interval. Zone M-2, 9000–5000 BP. Pinus and Quercum mixtumum ( Quercus, Ulmus, Tilia, Corylus) woodland and Vermuth steppes, with warm and semihumid climate. And about 7500 BP a maximum warm took place. It can be correlated to the Atlantic. Zone M-3, 5000–3500 BP. Pinus-Quercus woodland and Vermuth steppes with warm and semihumid, correlated to Subboreal. Both M-2 and M-3 can corrspond to the Hypsithermal interval of the Holocene subdivisions, i.e. the Optimum. In this interval some subtropical elements sppeare in the assemblage, such as Myrica, Antidesma, and Fagara which reflect that the weather might be warmer than that of the present in the same region. Some ecological dynamics of the vegetation are expressed in the assemblages. When climate became warm from Boreal to Atlantic, Corylus increased a little earlier than other deciduous but soon decreased. Ulmus declined at 5000 BP. This reflects situation is just the same as in North Europe. The woodland destroyed by human activities in culture and agiculture might be an important factor of vegetational and environmental changes. However the great increase of Pinus and Artemisia following the decrease of Ulmus and Tilia gives effective support to the tendency of climatic change, becaming cooler and drier in the Sub- boreal of Hypsithermal interval. This is an attempt to establish the pollen percentage diagram and pollen influx diagram by mean of exotic pollen. The pollen influx record shows similarities to that of the pollen percentages. However, the pollen influx is more obvious in representing the vegetation and environment changes.  相似文献

To this day, the only sturgeon to be listed on the French vertebrate inventory is the European sturgeon (Acipenser sturio Linnaeus, 1758). The recent study of sturgeon remains on various French archaeological sites shows the presence of another species: the Atlantic sturgeon (A. oxyrinchus Mitchill 1815). This species already existed in the French Atlantic region at the end of the Neolithic Age 5000 years ago and was still to be found 3000 years later. Thus the A. oxyrinchus determined in several Baltic medieval sites are neither the only nor the first sturgeons to have inhabited European waters. Sturgeon restoration projects in European rivers necessitate a precise determination of the native species. In the case of relict or extinct species, the bone remains found on archaeological sites represent the most reliable source of information. This discovery will also be the starting point of palaeogenetical research (mitochondrial and cellular aDNA) and will give information about the genetic diversity of these threatened or recently extinct populations.  相似文献

Resolving the identity, phylogeny and distribution of cryptic species within species complexes is an essential precursor to management. The bonnethead shark, Sphyrna tiburo, is a small coastal shark distributed in the Western Atlantic from North Carolina (U.S.A.) to southern Brazil. Genetic analyses based on mitochondrial markers revealed that bonnethead sharks comprise a species complex with at least two lineages in the Northwestern Atlantic and the Caribbean (S. tiburo and Sphyrna aff. tiburo, respectively). The phylogeographic and phylogenetic analysis of two mitochondrial markers [control region (mtCR) and cytochrome oxidase I (COI)] showed that bonnethead sharks from southeastern Brazil correspond to S. aff. tiburo, extending the distribution of this cryptic species >5000 km. Bonnethead shark populations are only managed in the U.S.A. and in the 2000s were considered to be regionally extinct or collapsed in southeast Brazil. The results indicate that there is significant genetic differentiation between S. aff. tiburo from Brazil and other populations from the Caribbean (ΦST = 0.9053, P < 0.000), which means that collapsed populations in the former are unlikely to be replenished from Caribbean immigration. The species identity of bonnethead sharks in the Southwest Atlantic and their relationship to North Atlantic and Caribbean populations still remains unresolved. Taxonomic revision and further sampling are required to reevaluate the status of the bonnethead shark complex through its distribution range.  相似文献

Ireland has the world's largest stocks of wild Atlantic salmon. A better understanding of gene expression will benefit conservation of wild stock as well as salmon aquaculture. We describe the PRTLI project designed to advance the fundamental understanding of the genome of Atlantic Salmon Salmo salar . The major objective is to create the first comprehensive database of gene expression and functional information using cDNA libraries and Microarray technology. One key area of interest to salmon biology is osmoregulation, which is critical to the ability of salmon to adapt in seawater. Tissues implicated in this process are the gills, intestine and skin. To initiate studies, SSH (suppression subtractive hybridization) libraries were constructed from intestine RNA extracted from smolts sampled in January and May. A number of potentially interesting clones have been identified, among those a heat shock protein, hsp90 in the reverse library. Others SSH libraries from various tissues (pituitary, hypothalamus, brain, gill, intestine, head kidney and spleen) have also been constructed and will be used to construct a 5000 clone microarray slide. This slide will then be used to elucidate gene expression profiles in various tissues. Further sample collection has been carried out to answer questions regarding biologicaldifferences between one‐ year and two‐year old parr and wild and hatchery smolt.  相似文献

Placing Peperomia berteroana of the Juan Fernandez Islands in the Pacific Ocean in synonymy with P. tristanensis of Tristan da Cunha in the Atlantic Ocean results in a species with a wide geographical disjunction of more than 5000 km. Morphological data indicate that these taxa are best treated as subspecies (P. berteroana subsp. berteroana and P. berteroana subsp. tristanensis).  相似文献

The abundance of the macrourid Coryphaenoides (Nematonurus) armatus was investigated using a single warp trawl and baited camera at soundings from 2500 to 5000 m in the north-east Atlantic Ocean. There was no significant relationship between abundance ( n km−2) as determined from swept area of the trawl and numbers of fish photographed at standard baits. However, timing of the first arrival ( t arr s) of the first fish at bait correlated well with the trawl data through the relationship: It is concluded that by measurement of arrival times, the baited camera provides a cost-effective complement to trawl sampling for estimating abundance of deep-water fish including Synaphobranchus kaupi, Anlimora rostratu and C. (N). armatus. However, some abundant species such as the roundnose grenadier Coryphaenoides rupestris were not attracted to baited long-lines or baited cameras and therefore could be sampled only by trawl.  相似文献

Background  

The Cross River region in Nigeria is an extremely diverse area linguistically with over 60 distinct languages still spoken today. It is also a region of great historical importance, being a) adjacent to the likely homeland from which Bantu-speaking people migrated across most of sub-Saharan Africa 3000-5000 years ago and b) the location of Calabar, one of the largest centres during the Atlantic slave trade. Over 1000 DNA samples from 24 clans representing speakers of the six most prominent languages in the region were collected and typed for Y-chromosome (SNPs and microsatellites) and mtDNA markers (Hypervariable Segment 1) in order to examine whether there has been substantial gene flow between groups speaking different languages in the region. In addition the Cross River region was analysed in the context of a larger geographical scale by comparison to bordering Igbo speaking groups as well as neighbouring Cameroon populations and more distant Ghanaian communities.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments and weekly trammel net surveys in the Navesink River, New Jersey (USA) were used to examine the predator-prey interaction between age-1+ summer flounder (Paralichthys dentatus) and age-0 winter flounder (Pseudopleuronectes americanus). Winter flounder (24-67 mm TL) were the dominant piscine prey of summer flounder (n=95, 252-648 mm TL) collected in trammel nets. We observed a temporal shift in summer flounder diets from sand shrimp (Crangon septemspinosa) and winter flounder, dominant during June and early July, to blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus) and other fishes (primarily Atlantic silversides, Menidia menidia and Atlantic menhaden, Brevortia tyrannus) later in the summer. Variations in prey selection appeared to be related to changes in the spatial distribution of predators and spatio-temporal variation in prey availability. In laboratory experiments, summer flounder (271-345 mm total length, TL) preferred demersal winter flounder to a pelagic fish (Atlantic silversides) and a benthic invertebrate (sand shrimp) prey, and the vulnerability of winter flounder increased with increasing prey body size from 20 to 90 mm TL. Experiments testing habitat effects showed that mortality of winter flounder in three different size classes (20-29, 40-49, 60-69 mm TL) was not influenced by sediment grain sizes permitting differential burial of the prey. However, vegetation enhanced survival, with fish suffering lower mortality in eelgrass (Zostera marina, 15+/-0.04%) than in sea lettuce (Ulva lactuca, 38+/-0.04%) or bare sand (70+/-0.07%) when the macrophytes were planted to produce similar leaf surface areas (5000 cm(2) m(-2)). Prey vulnerability appeared to be related to the role of vision in the predator's attack strategy and prey activity levels.  相似文献

Recent climate change has triggered profound reorganization in northeast Atlantic ecosystems, with substantial impact on the distribution of marine assemblages from plankton to fishes. However, assessing the repercussions on apex marine predators remains a challenging issue, especially for pelagic species. In this study, we use Bayesian coalescent modelling of microsatellite variation to track the population demographic history of one of the smallest temperate cetaceans, the harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) in European waters. Combining genetic inferences with palaeo-oceanographic and historical records provides strong evidence that populations of harbour porpoises have responded markedly to the recent climate-driven reorganization in the eastern North Atlantic food web. This response includes the isolation of porpoises in Iberian waters from those further north only approximately 300 years ago with a predominant northward migration, contemporaneous with the warming trend underway since the ‘Little Ice Age’ period and with the ongoing retreat of cold-water fishes from the Bay of Biscay. The extinction or exodus of harbour porpoises from the Mediterranean Sea (leaving an isolated relict population in the Black Sea) has lacked a coherent explanation. The present results suggest that the fragmentation of harbour distribution range in the Mediterranean Sea was triggered during the warm ‘Mid-Holocene Optimum’ period (approx. 5000 years ago), by the end of the post-glacial nutrient-rich ‘Sapropel’ conditions that prevailed before that time.  相似文献

European eels (Anguilla anguilla) undertake spawning migrations of more than 5000 km from continental Europe and North Africa to frontal zones in the Sargasso Sea. Subsequently, the larval offspring are advected by large-scale eastward ocean currents towards continental waters. However, the Sargasso Sea is oligotrophic, with generally low plankton biomass, and the feeding biology of eel larvae has so far remained a mystery, hampering understanding of this peculiar life history. DNA barcoding of gut contents of 61 genetically identified A. anguilla larvae caught in the Sargasso Sea showed that even the smallest larvae feed on a striking variety of plankton organisms, and that gelatinous zooplankton is of fundamental dietary importance. Hence, the specific plankton composition seems essential for eel larval feeding and growth, suggesting a linkage between eel survival and regional plankton productivity. These novel insights into the prey of Atlantic eels may furthermore facilitate eel larval rearing in aquaculture, which ultimately may replace the unsustainable use of wild-caught glass eels.  相似文献

[18F]VUF 5000 was evaluated as a potential PET ligand for the histamine H3 receptor. In the rat a high uptake of [18F]VUF 5000 was observed in liver, lung and kidney and a low uptake in the brain. In order to explain these findings we determined the LogD(oct,7.2) of [18F]VUF 5000, studied the biodistribution in the presence of carrier VUF 5000, modified [18F]VUF 5000 chemically and studied the binding of [18F]VUF 5000 to human serum albumin. From the results of these experiments it was concluded that [18F]VUF 5000 is not suitable as a PET ligand for brain imaging of the histamine H3 receptor, since [18F]VUF 5000 hardly penetrates into the brain.  相似文献

Three separate effects on refuge use by signal crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus and Atlantic salmon Salmo salar were examined: (1) the effect on Atlantic salmon of an addition of signal crayfish (doubling the total number of animals), (2) the effect on signal crayfish of an addition of Atlantic salmon and (3) intraspecific compared with interspecific competition, compared by holding total density of animals constant and varying the proportion of signal crayfish and Atlantic salmon in trials. Observations were made during winter, when both species are nocturnal. The proportion of Atlantic salmon sheltering was significantly lower in the presence than in the absence of signal crayfish when the interspecific treatment (Atlantic salmon plus signal crayfish) effected a doubling in density compared to the intraspecific treatment (Atlantic salmon alone). The proportion of signal crayfish sheltering was independent of the presence of Atlantic salmon. When total density was constant, the proportion of Atlantic salmon sheltering was significantly higher in intraspecific (52·8%) than interspecific trials (27·3%). Atlantic salmon out of shelter during the day in winter are believed to be very vulnerable to predators and the capacity for fish to share shelters with one another is known to be very low. Therefore, competition from crayfish for winter shelters may lead to detrimental effects on Atlantic salmon populations.  相似文献

Bigeye (Thunnus obesus) is a large, pelagic, and migratory species of tuna that inhabits tropical and temperate marine waters worldwide. Previous studies based on mitochondrial RFLP data have shown that bigeye tunas from the Atlantic Ocean are the most interesting from a genetic point of view. Two highly divergent mitochondrial haplotype clades (I and II) coexist in the Atlantic Ocean. One is almost exclusive of the Atlantic Ocean whereas the other is also found in the Indo-Pacific Ocean. Bigeye tuna from the Atlantic Ocean is currently managed as a single stock, although this assumption remains untested at the genetic level. Therefore, genetic diversity was determined at the mitochondrial control region to test the null hypothesis of no population structure in bigeye tuna from the Atlantic Ocean. A total of 331 specimens were sampled from four locations in the Atlantic Ocean (Canada, Azores, Canary Islands, and Gulf of Guinea), and one in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, respectively. The reconstructed neighbor-joining phylogeny confirmed the presence of Clades I and II throughout the Atlantic Ocean. No apparent latitudinal gradient of the proportions of both clades in the different collection sites was observed. Hierarchical AMOVA tests and pairwise phi(ST) comparisons involving Atlantic Ocean Clades I and II were consistent with a single stock of bigeye tuna in the Atlantic Ocean. Population genetic analyses considering phylogroups independently supported gene flow within Clade II throughout the Atlantic Ocean, and within Clade I between Atlantic and Indo-Pacific Oceans. The latter result suggests present uni-directional gene flow from the Indo-Pacific into the Atlantic Ocean. Moreover, mismatch analyses dated divergence of Clades I and II during the Pleistocene, as previously proposed. In addition, migration rates were estimated using coalescent methods, and showed a net migration from Atlantic Ocean feeding grounds towards the Gulf of Guinea, the best-known spawning ground of Atlantic bigeye tuna.  相似文献

A phylogeographic analysis of mitochondrial DNA variation was performed in order to test the hypothesis that north-eastern North America has been postglacially recolonized by two races of rainbow smelt Osmerus mordax . This was accomplished by documenting the geographical distribution of two major mtDNA phylogenetic clades among 1290 smelt from 49 lacustrine and anadromous populations covering most of the species' native range. The data set was built by combining previously published results with those generated in this study. The two mtDNA clades showed a geographical dichotomy, independent of life-history types, whereby the more eastern populations were either fixed or largely dominated by one clade and western populations for the other. Such geographical pattern implying a phylogenetic discontinuity provided strong evidence for the persistence of smelt in two distinct glacial refugia as well as their differential postglacial dispersal. The most likely refugium for the so-called Atlantic race was the Atlantic coastal plains, whereas that of the so-called Acadian race was the exundated Grand Banks area. Patterns of postglacial dispersal interpreted from palaeogeographic events suggested that the Atlantic race recolonized northern regions about 5000 years prior the Acadian race. Both races came into contact in the St Lawrence River estuary. While gene flow has been possible, the sympatric occurrence in the estuary of anadromous populations alternatively dominated by one mtDNA clade or the other indicated that reproductive isolation mechanisms between the two races developed within this contact zone. This represents the first evidence of secondary intergradation among distinct races of aquatic organisms in an estuarine environment.  相似文献

Avicennia germinans L. is a widespread mangrove species occupying the west coast of Africa and the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of the Americas from the Bahamas to Brazil and Baja California to Peru. An amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) molecular analysis was carried out to assess genetic architecture within this species and to evaluate the effects of the Atlantic Ocean and the Central American Isthmus (CAI) on population and regional genetic diversity and differentiation. In total, 349 polymorphic AFLP fragments were identified among 144 individuals from 14 populations from the east Atlantic, west Atlantic and east Pacific. Levels of genetic diversity varied considerably among populations, but were generally higher in populations from the east Atlantic. Regional differentiation between the Pacific coast and Atlantic populations was greater than between east and west Atlantic populations, suggesting that the CAI has had an important influence on population genetic structure in this species. The lower level of divergence of east Atlantic from west Atlantic populations suggests some dispersal across the Atlantic Ocean, although migration rates are probably low; Nm from GST equal to 0.41 and accumulation of private and rare alleles in the east Atlantic. Population differentiation did not appear to follow an isolation by distance model and has probably resulted from complex patterns of population bottlenecks, and founder events due to landscape changes during the Pleistocene, particularly in the west Atlantic. The molecular data provide no support for the treatment of east Atlantic populations as a separate species A. africana.  相似文献

The wreckfish Polyprion americanus , a large [>1 m total length ( L T)] demersal teleost, is distributed globally in temperate waters, including both sides of the North and South Atlantic Oceans, the Mediterranean, the western South Pacific, and the southern Indian Ocean. Wreckfish spawn off the south-eastern U.S. on an area of the Blake Plateau (the Charleston Bump) characterized by an extensive ridge having approximately 100 m relief, in 450–600 m depths. Juvenile wreckfish (<60 cm L T) are pelagic and, in the North Atlantic, are not reported from the Blake Plateau fishing area, but occur in by-catch and fishery landings in the eastern Atlantic. Analysis of nine restriction fragment length profiles from a PCR-amplified fragment (∼1.5 kb) of the ND1 mitochondrial gene indicated no stock separation between eastern North Atlantic (Azores, Majorca, Madeira), and western North Atlantic (Blake Plateau) wreckfish. Restriction site differences separate western South Atlantic wreckfish from the North Atlantic; however, South Atlantic wreckfish share restriction-site similarities with western Pacific wreckfish that are not shared with North Atlantic wreckfish. North Atlantic circulation provides a mechanism for a long-lived pelagic stage to be dispersed from Blake Plateau spawning grounds to the eastern North Atlantic. Global circulation patterns may explain both the dispersal of mtDNA haplotypes and the disjunct distribution of wreckfish body lengths in a temperate, deep-water vagile species with an extended pelagic juvenile stage such as wreckfish.  相似文献
