Phenology, distribution and abundance of three Diptera species on Heard Island were investigated to provide baseline data for monitoring the effect on climate change on populations. Five vegetation types at two localities were sampled in two different years, firstly in the summer of 1987–1988 at Atlas Cove and secondly at Spit Bay over 12 months from summer 1992 to summer 1993. Pitfall traps and soil core extractions were operated in summer at both localities and pitfalls alone for 12 months from Spit Bay. The wingless Anatalanta aptera was the most abundant species in traps at Atlas Cove with most individuals collected from Poa tussock grassland, half as many from Pringlea and Azorella vegetation and fewest with a significantly higher level of asymmetry in the large katepisternal setae, from Azorella and Fellfield. Calycopteryx moseleyi was the most abundant fly in traps at Spit Bay, and A. maritima was the least abundant at both localities. Monthly pitfall catches from 1992–1993 indicated that A. aptera was active in most months of the year apart from winter, females early in the season and males active throughout the summer; teneral individuals only detected in January. C. moseleyi was more strongly seasonal with peak adult numbers occurring in January. Amalopteryx maritima was least seasonal in activity. Asymmetry in A. aptera suggests that it was at the limit of its ecological tolerance in Fellfield and Azorella on Heard Island. Changes caused by climate warming or invasive species are mooted.  相似文献

Rain-pools differ from oceanic islands, essentially, in being ephemeral. Ability to disperse and reproduce is therefore a special priority among inhabitants.
Pupal exuviae of a principal inhabitant, Chironomus imicola , were collected from pools in tropical Africa. Length of pupal skin is positively related both to flight duration and ovule number in adult chironomids. Hence length of pupal skin can be related to fitness in this temporary pool dweller.
Predictably, therefore, remote pools are inhabited by large individuals while those in clusters have more small forms.
That duration of the habitat also influences body size is demonstrated by Polypedilum vanderplanki. These larvae are able to survive dry periods and therefore experience the habitat as permanent. In contrast to C. imicola, P. vanderplanki responds to isolation with a disproportionate number of small flies.
In addition to these differences in average size, variance in body size is affected by isolation of the habitat. Comparison with progeny of a single female shows increased variability to be determined not only by habitat location but also to be an inherent characteristic of animals perceiving the habitats as ephemeral.  相似文献

Moss-inhabiting diatom communities from Heard Island,sub-Antarctic   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
In this paper, we list 192 diatom taxa, collected from bryophyte samples from Heard Island (52°05S, 73°30E). The Heard Island diatom flora shows a marked similarity to those of the Crozet and Kerguelen archipelagos, and is quite dissimilar to the moss-dwelling diatom flora of Macquarie and Amsterdam Island. Based on species composition, three main groups of samples could be discerned. Each group represents a different habitat. Samples dominated by Diadesmis ingeae, Pinnularia borealis and several Psammothidium species seem to prefer the driest habitats. A special form of this community was found in shaded areas. Samples from wet habitats such as flush areas and pools were dominated by species such as Adlafia bryophila, Sellaphora tumida, Fragilaria capucina and Planothidium lanceolatum. An intermediate group was observed in more acid, but terrestrial, conditions, characterised by Eunotia paludosa and Chamaepinnularia soehrensis var. muscicola. These community patterns are similar to those found on other sub-Antarctic islands, and we suggest that a group of typical sub-Antarctic species and communities exists.  相似文献

Several environmental factors leading to size-dependent mortality influence insect body size. Few investigations have been concerned with the ways in which the mechanisms underlying variation in water-balance characteristics evolve in response to changes in body size that occur independently of water-balance requirements. Using an explicitly phylogenetic analysis, we show how body size has changed over time in the Ectemnorhinus group of weevils and how water-balance characteristics have evolved in response to this change and changes in habitat use. The basal species in the group are all large bodied and from moist environments. In response to a change in resource availability, there was a marked decline in size within the group. Despite the reduction in water content and dehydration tolerance that this meant, evolution of low whole-animal water-loss rates and high tolerance of dehydration resulted in conservation of desiccation resistance. The return to moist habitats in the group resulted in a reduction in dehydration tolerance and an increase in water-loss rate. Thus, dehydration tolerance and water-loss rate respond rapidly both when there is selection for water conservation and when this requirement is relaxed. Future laboratory selection experiments might usefully explore both directions of water-balance evolution.  相似文献

A model relating relative size of the posterior teeth to diet is suggested for forest and savanna primates and Homo. Relative tooth size is calculated for the South African gracile australopithecine sample using posterior maxillary area sums and size estimates based on four limb bones. A number of limbs were shown to be non-hominid. Comparisons show the South African gracile sample apparently adapted to a very heavily masticated diet with relative tooth size significantly greater than any living hominoid. Periodic intensive utilization of grains and roots combined with scavenged animal protein are suggested as the most likely dietary reconstruction.  相似文献

Within many animal taxa there is a trend for the species of larger body size to eat food of lower caloric value. For example, most large extant lizards are herbivorous. Reasonable arguments based on energetic considerations are often invoked to explain this trend, yet, while these factors set limits to feasible body size, they do not in themselves mathematically produce optimum body sizes. A simple optimization model is developed here which considers food search, capture, and eating rates and the metabolic cost of these activities for animals of different sizes. The optimization criterion is defined as the net caloric gain a consumer accrues per day. This model does produce an optimum intermediate body size which increases with food quality - not the reverse. This discrepancy is accounted for, however, because the model also predicts that body size should be even more sensitive to increases in food abundance. In nature, many poor quality foods are also relatively abundant foods, hence the consumers eating them may maximize their daily energetic profit by evolving a relatively large body size. Optimum consumer body size also decreases with increases in consumer metabolic rate and prey speed.  相似文献

Since 1968, Turtle Doves Streptopelia turtur in Britain have declined in number by 70% and in breeding range by at least 25%. This study was undertaken during the 1998–2000 breeding seasons at two sites in East Anglia to examine habitat use and foraging ecology. Home ranges of radiotagged Turtle Doves were 0.3–1130 ha in size and contained more woodland than expected from availability. Radiotagged birds undertook foraging trips of up to 10 km. Turtle Doves were recorded feeding primarily at 'man-made' sites (i.e. spilt grain, animal feed and grain stores) and were only infrequently recorded feeding at 'natural' sites. Diet analysis showed that wheat and rape seed averaged 61% of the seeds eaten by Turtle Doves. This contrasts with a study undertaken in Britain in the 1960s, when the seeds of wild plants (weeds) constituted over 90% of those eaten, with wheat and rape seeds making up only 5%. The current arrangements for set-aside and agri-environmental schemes provide a framework for the establishment and maintenance of weed-rich areas on farmland as a source of wild food.  相似文献

Introduced mice were trapped in the three main vegetation types on subantarctic Auckland Island, New Zealand, over three trapping sessions, in winter 2007. Fifty mice were trapped over 675 trap-nights. Mice were caught most often in upland tussock grassland and more often in rata forest than in shrubland but there were no significant differences among the catch rates in these habitats. Upland tussock grassland appeared to have been a better vegetation type for mice, as adult females were trapped only there and mean weight of adult males was heavier there than of adult males from the other vegetation types.  相似文献

Summary The zonation of rocky shore biota on Heard Island is described for the first time, related to a universal zonation scheme and compared with that recorded for other sub-Antarctic localities. The Kelp Zone of holdfasts of the giant kelp, Durvillea antarctica (Chamisso) Hariot (one of the characteristic features of these regions) is confirmed as a sublittoral fringe. The occurrence of a Bare Zone within the littoral zone on sub-Antarctic shores is discussed. The possible roles of submersion, spray, freezing and predation by gulls in influencing the extent and composition of zones are discussed.  相似文献

Theresource availability hypothesispredicts occurrence of larger rodents in more productive habitats.This prediction was tested in a dataset of 1,301 rodent species.We used adult body mass as a measure of body size and normalized difference vegetation index(NDVI)as a measure of habitat productivity.We utilized a cross-species approach to investigate the association between these variables.This was done at both the order level(Rodentia)and at narrower taxonomic scales.We applied phylogenetic generalized least squares(PGLS)to correct for phylogenetic relationships.The relationship between body mas and NDVI was also investigated across rodent assemblages.We controlled for spatial autocorrelation using generalized least squares(GLS)analysis.The cross-species approach found extremely low support for the resource availability hypothesis.This was reflected by a weak positive association between body mass and NDVI at the order level.We find a positive association in only a minority of rodent subtaxa.The best fit GLS model detected no significant association between body mass and NDVI across assemblages.Thus,our results do not support the view that resource availability plays a major role in explaining geographic variation in rodent body size.  相似文献

There is a lack of information regarding the ecology and behaviour of red foxes that can be used to elaborate effective management programs for this species on Prince Edward Island (Canada). The main goal of this study was to provide baseline information on habitat selection and home range size of red foxes on Prince Edward Island. Data were collected from snow-tracking and radio-telemetry sessions conducted in two study sites (including one site within Prince Edward Island National Park). Our results indicated that red foxes selected for roads and human-use areas during both the breeding and the kit-rearing seasons in the park. Outside the park, however, the data failed to conclusively show that foxes have a unique preference for human-use habitats or roads. Forests were selected against in both study sites. Although roads are frequently visited by foxes during the kit-rearing season in the park, each individual fox typically stays in this habitat only for short periods of time (< 15 min). This finding suggests that foraging efficiency along the roads is very high possibly reflecting the abundance of anthropogenic food sources. Overall, we present the largest amount of data on habitat selection ever collected for red foxes in Prince Edward Island, Canada. Our results show that food sources in human-use areas and roads are altering the selection and/or use of habitats of red foxes in some areas of Prince Edward Island.  相似文献

Local adaptation is a key process in the evolution of biological diversity but relatively few studies have identified the selective forces that drive trait divergence at low taxonomic levels, particularly amongst mammals. Variation in body size across taxa is fundamental as shown by allometric relationships with numerous physiological, morphological and life-history traits. Differences in adult size across cohorts within populations of temperate ungulates are determined by variation in trophic resource availability during growth, suggesting that natural selection might promote the evolution of size divergence across sister taxa through local adaptation to variation in habitat productivity. We tested this hypothesis in the hartebeest ( Alcelaphu s sp.), an antelope lineage including eight extant (or recently extinct) allopatric subspecies that evolved within the last million years and colonized all the African savannahs. We predicted that body size across the subspecies should correlate positively with habitat productivity across taxon ranges. Mean body size of all the hartebeest taxa was quantified using skull length from museum specimens, and climatic variables were used as surrogates of habitat productivity. Body size across subspecies was positively correlated with rainfall, suggesting that variation in habitat primary production may drive morphological evolution between taxa. Focusing at a low taxonomic level has allowed us to identify a critical selective force that may shape divergence in body size, without the confounding effect of variation in trophic niche. © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 92 , 431–440.  相似文献

Several authors have suggested that African antelope (familyBovidae) exemplify coadaptation of ecological, behavioral,and morphological traits. We tested four hypotheses relatedto the ecology and behavior of 75 species of African antelopeusing both conventional statistical techniques and techniques that account for the nonindependence of species by consideringtheir phylogenetic relationships. Specifically, we tested thehypotheses that (1) dietary selectivity is correlated negativelywith body mass, (2) dietary selectivity is correlated negativelywith group size, (3) gregarious species either flee or counterattackwhen approached by predators, but solitary and pair-livingspecies seek cover to hide, and (4) body mass and group sizeare correlated positively. Each of these hypotheses was examinedfor the global data set (family Bovidae) and, when possible,within the two antelope subfamilies (Antilopinae and Bovinae)and within 7 of the 10 antelope tribes. The results of ourconventional and phylogenetically corrected analyses supportedthe hypotheses that group and body size vary predictably with feeding style and that antipredator behavior varies with groupsize. The hypothesis that body mass and group size are correlatedpositively was supported by conventional statistics, but thesetwo traits were only weakly related using a phylogeneticallycorrected analysis. Moreover, qualitative and quantitativecomparisons within each of the eight major African antelope tribes generally gave little support for the four hypothesestested. Thus, although our analyses at the subfamily levelprovided results that were consistent with prior hypotheses,our analyses at the level of tribes were equivocal. The frequency of multiple births, life history parameters, body size, and diet characteristics were obtained from the literature for 70 primate species. The general pattern within the primate order is to have single infant litters, yet multiple births regularly occur in a number of species in specific phylogenetic groups. Primates which have large litters tend to be small, have short gestation periods and give birth to small infants, which are weaned quickly, and mature rapidly. Species in which multiple births are common also have short interbirth intervals and in the Callitrichidae have males which exhibit paternal care. In addition, they are commonly insectivorous. Although it is difficult to isolate the effects of diet on litter size, independent of body size, analyses suggest that after the influence of body size is statistically removed, as the proportion of insects in the diet increases, animals have larger litters. We suggest that by adopting a mixed diet of insects and fruit primates may be able to ensure access to a seasonally stable food resource that is not greatly restricted by the presence of toxins. This diet would allow a relatively high metabolism and facilitate large litters.  相似文献

The importance of interspecific competition to habitat use by two congeneric stream gobies, Rhinogobius sp. LD (large-dark type) and CB (cross-band type), was studied by: (i) examining differences in habitat use by each species along the course of the stream; and (ii) comparing microhabitat use and the diet of each species between in allopatry and in sympatry in tributaries of the Shimanto River, south-western Shikoku, Japan. Rhinogobius sp. LD mainly used riffles through the course of the stream. Although CB also mainly used riffles in the lower reaches where CB was numerically dominant, the greater use of riffles by CB was not observed in upper reaches where LD was dominant. Microhabitat analysis revealed that both LD and CB preferred lower bottom velocity in faster current in both allopatry and sympatry. In sympatry, however, LD used coarser substrate and faster current than CB, and both LD and CB used narrower ranges of microhabitat conditions than in allopatry. Dietary analysis indicated that both allopatric and sympatric LD preferred baetids, which are apt to drift, suggesting they adopted ambush foraging. Allopatric CB preferred leptophlebiids and chironomids, which are also apt to drift, whereas sympatric CB did not prefer such invertebrates. Overall results of this study suggest that LD and CB compete for better feeding habitats, CB shift their habitat use and foraging mode under the influence of LD, and current velocity and substrate coarseness are key factors in their habitat segregation.

Summary Six major higher plant communities are defined for sub-Antarctic Heard Island: tussock grassland, meadow, herbfield, pool complex, cushion-carpet, fellfield. The communities were mapped at a scale of 1:50000, using colour aerial photographs and field observations. The floristic composition of twelve vegetation transects and of thirty sample quadrats along these is used to describe the communities and identify dominant or indicator species. The vegetation is compared with that of other sub-Antarctic islands.  相似文献

Fur seals were eliminated by sealers at Heard Island soon after its discovery in the 1850s. The first recorded breeding of Antarctic fur seals (Arctocephalus gazella) since sealing was reported in early 1963 (two pups). The most recent survey of the Heard Island fur-seal population was undertaken between November 2000 and March 2001, when 1,012 Antarctic fur-seal pups were born. This represents a fourfold increase since the last complete census in 1987/1988 (13 years), when 248 births were recorded. Pup estimates and counts available for eight breeding seasons since 1962/1963 suggest the population has been increasing at between 12 and 20% per year. Based on pup production, the breeding population is estimated to number approximately 4,100 seals. The number of fur seals on Heard Island peaked in late February/early March at 29,256 indicating that, in addition to the breeding population, a significant number of seals born elsewhere haul out on the island. Most of these are moulting sub-adult and adult males. As in 1987/1988, only one subantarctic fur-seal pup (A. tropicalis) was observed, suggesting this species is not colonising the island, as has been speculated.  相似文献

To clarify seascape-scale habitat use patterns of fishes in the Ryukyu Islands (southern Japan), visual censuses were conducted in the mangrove estuary, sand area, seagrass bed, coral rubble area, branching coral area on the reef flat, and tabular coral area on the outer reef slope at Ishigaki Island in August and November 2004, and May, August and November 2005. During the study period a total of 319 species were observed. Species richness and abundance were highest in the branching and tabular coral areas, followed in order by the seagrass bed and mangrove estuary, and coral rubble and sand areas, in each month. Cluster analysis resulted in a clear grouping of assemblage structures by habitat type rather than by census month. SIMPER analysis showed that fish assemblages in the tabular coral area were mainly characterized by Acanthurus nigrofuscus, Pomacentrus lepidogenys, P. philippinus and P. vaiuli, the branching coral area by Chromis viridis and Pomacentrus moluccensis, the coral rubble area by Amblyeleotris steinitzi and Ctenogobiops pomastictus, the seagrass bed by Cheilio inermis, Lethrinus atkinsoni and Stethojulis strigiventer, the sand area by Valenciennea longipinnis, and the mangrove estuary by Gerres oyena, Lutjanus fulvus and Yongeichthys criniger. Moreover, fishes exhibited two habitat use strategies, inhabiting either a single or several specific habitats throughout their benthic life history stages, or having a possible ontogenetic habitat shift from the mangrove estuary or seagrass bed to coral-dominated habitats (e.g., Lethrinus atkinsoni, Lethrinus obsoletus, Lutjanus fulviflamma, Lutjanus fulvus, Lutjanus gibbus, Lutjanus monostigma and Parupeneus barberinus), suggesting that the mangrove estuary and seagrass bed have a nursery function.  相似文献
