The plant-hybrid-zones-as-centers-of-biodiversity (hereafter, PHZCB) hypothesis posits that plant hybrid zones represent areas of elevated biodiversity, and supports the inclusion of plant hybrid zones in conservation efforts. Support for the PHZCB hypothesis is limited to a handful of cases involving insect and fungal species and to two studies involving higher trophic levels. The PHZCB hypothesis requires further testing before plant hybrid zones can be established with any certainty as centers of biodiversity. We test whether the PHZCB hypothesis holds for higher trophic levels by examining the community structure of birds and reptiles associated with the Quercus grisea × Quercus gambelii species complex. Specifically, we compare patterns of species richness and abundance of these taxa in 10 hybrid zones and 11 contact zones (i.e., zones where both parental species occur but hybrids do not). In contrast to predictions of the PHZCB hypothesis, contact zones supported significantly more species of birds and reptiles than did hybrid zones. Species abundances exhibited idiosyncratic responses to zone type, but were higher generally in the contact zones.  相似文献

Abstract

We studied the climatic signal of the earlywood anatomy of a temperate [Quercus petraea (Mattuschka) Liebl.] and a sub-Mediterranean (Quercus pyrenaica Willd.) oak species growing under similar climatic conditions in a transitional area between the Atlantic and Mediterranean regions of the Iberian Peninsula. We hypothesized that both species react differently in their wood anatomy due to their contrasting ecological requirements, and we test the usefulness of earlywood anatomical features to study the behaviour of these ring-porous oaks upon climate. For this, we measured the earlywood vessels, and obtained annual series of several anatomical variables for the period 1937–2006 using dendrochronological techniques, considering whether the vessels belonged to the first row or not. After optimizing the data set by principal component analysis and progressive filtering of large vessels, we selected maximum vessel area and total number of vessels as they resulted to be the optimal variables to describe vessel size and number, respectively. Vessel size of Q. pyrenaica was dependent on precipitation along the previous growing season, whereas it did not show any clear climatic response for Q. petraea. On the contrary, vessel number was related to winter temperature for both species. These relationships observed between climate and anatomy appeared to be stable through time. The results obtained reinforce the utility of earlywood vessel features as potential climate proxies.  相似文献

Aims The objectives are to compare the merits and demerits of rectangular hyperbola, nonrectangular hyperbola and the electron transport rate light-response Ye model, to investigate the difference of electron transport rate between the shaded and sunlit leaves, and to discuss the influence of bioenvironmental factors on the characteristic parameters of electron transport rate. Methods The light-response (J-I) curves of electron transport rate were measured by the LI-6400XT fluorescence measurement system in Quercus variabilis and Robinia pseudoacacia plantations in north China. The rectangular hyperbola, nonrectangular hyperbola and the Ye model were used to simulate electron transport rate of the light-response curves. Important findings The results showed that the determination coefficient of the J-I curves fitted by three models were more than 0.96. Compared with the rectangular hyperbola and nonrectangular hyperbola, the determination coefficient of the Ye model was the highest (>0.99). The dynamic downregulation of photosystem II and the saturated light intensity (I sat ) cannot be simulated and obtained by the rectangular hyperbola model and the nonrectangular hyperbola model. The maximum electron transport rate (J max ) obtained by the rectangular hyperbola model was obviously higher than the measured one. The dynamic downregulation of photosystem II was well simulated by the Ye model. In this study, sun leaf carbon isotope composition (δ13C) of two co-occurring woody Mediterranean species (Quercus pubescens Willd., a deciduous oak, and Q. ilex L., an evergreen one) was investigated on four sites with different water availability. The total range of δ13C values was 4.4 and 3.1‰ for Q. pubescens and Q. ilex respectively. The intra-site variability was about 3‰. Total mean per species was equal. There were significant differences among sites, but at each site means of δ13C were not significantly different between species. A simple physiological model predicts no difference in intrinsic water-use efficiency (WUEi) between evergreen and deciduous oaks. The relationship between site means of δ13C and water parameters suggests that there is a leaf functional adjustment with respect to available water resource. No correlation was found between δ13C and the contents of any mass-based biochemical constituent. Nevertheless there was a significant correlation between δ13C and leaf mass per area of Q. ilex. For both species, there is also a positive correlation between leaf δ13C and individual crown area, i.e. a structural characteristic at tree level. Natural hybridization is common among oaks. We studied the variability of morphological and ecophysiological variables in the hybrid Quercus subpyrenaica and its assumed parental species Q. faginea and Q. pubescens, which co-occur in NE Spain. To assess the fitness of these taxa we studied several ecophysiological variables (hydraulic conductivity, Kh; hydraulic specific conductivity, Ks; leaf specific conductivity, LSC; water potential corresponding to a 50% loss of conductivity, PLC50; efficiency of light absorption, Ea). We performed a correspondence analysis (CA) to ordinate seedlings, grown under homogeneous environmental conditions, according to their plant and leaf morphology. The CA axis 1 synthesized intra-taxon variability, while the CA axis 2 summarized inter-taxa variability. Q. subpyrenaica showed a wide spectrum of forms, but they were overall closer to those of Q. faginea. We defined three phenotypes within the hybrid based on morphology, which were: (i) the robur group (Qs-r; auriculate leaf base, rounded lobe apex); (ii) Q. pubescens (Qs-p; rounded leaf base, acute lobe apex); and (iii) Q. faginea (Qs-f; acute leaf base, acute-spiny lobe apex). The mean values of Ks and PLC50 arranged the hybrid groups in the same order as the ordination based on leaf morphology. The Qs-r group showed the highest values of Ks and PLC50, while the Qs-f group showed the lowest. Both morphologically and ecophysiologically, the hybrids showed a wide range of values, which spanned and even exceeded the variation of parental taxa.  相似文献

Galls formed by the interaction of insects on plant tissues are an example of the unusual transformation and use of plants by insects. The aim of this study was to characterize the structure of galls formed by Cynips quercusfolii L. on sessile oak leaves. In the structure of galls, we distinguished the following: (1) the protective ‘first contact zone’ created by epidermal and sub-epidermal sclerenchyma rings, (2) the wide parenchymatous ring, (3) the internal protective zone created by the sclerenchyma ring, and (4) the nutritional zone consisting of cells filled with amyloplasts containing starch. A characteristic for galls in the development stage is the centripetal starch gradient in which starch accumulates in a ‘ring of amyloplasts’ in the larval chamber.  相似文献

Live oak (Quercus virginiana Mill.) is a long lived, broadleaf, evergreen species native to the lower Coastal Plain of the southern and southeastern United States and is frequently planted in the urban environment. However, live oak has received limited attention for its potential for dendrochronological analyses possibly because its growth-ring boundaries may be less defined due to the absence of a distinct dormancy period. The objective of this explorative study was to determine whether live oak rings in both urban and historic trees could be accurately identified and measured for dendrochronological applications. One hundred urban live oaks were assessed as well as four cross-sectional specimens from historic sites in the southeastern United States. Age of all cored live oak ranged from 7 to 29 (average = 16.8 rings), while cross-sections were taken from trees with an average age of 175 years. A chronology was created from cores that had the highest interseries correlations (n = 27), resulting in an average interseries correlation of 0.654. The analysis of live oak cross sections revealed that the rings on live oak are very faint and barely discernible, delimited mainly by a faint row of earlywood vessels with no or barely visible terminal parenchyma. Rings on these sections were erratic (i.e., fading out along the circumference) and non-concentric (i.e., a particular ring could be both wide and narrow at certain points along the circumference) so that any attempt to measure the rings on opposing radii would have produced meaningless results. However, based on the results of this study, we conclude that the dendrochronological analysis of live oak is possible with careful sample preparation and analysis and that results would be reliable, even for urban trees. Results of this study suggest that urban tree-ring series with higher interseries correlations were more vigorous than those with lower values, suggesting that urban environmental stresses related to individual sites may decrease the usefulness of crossdating techniques for evaluating annual rings on younger, urban trees.  相似文献

The fragmented populations and reduced population densities that result from human disturbance are issues of growing importance in evolutionary and conservation biology. A key issue is whether remnant individuals become reproductively isolated. California Valley oak (Quercus lobata) is a widely distributed, endemic species in California, increasingly jeopardized by anthropogenic changes in biota and land use. We studied pollen movement in a savannah population of Valley oak at Sedgwick Reserve, Santa Barbara County, to estimate effective number of pollen donors (Nep) and average distance of effective pollen movement (delta). Using twogener, our recently developed hybrid model of paternity and genetic structure treatments that analyses maternal and progeny multilocus genotypes, we found that current Nep = 3.68 individuals. Based on an average adult density of d= 1.19 stems/ha, we assumed a bivariate normal distribution to model current average pollen dispersal distance (delta) and estimated delta= 64.8 m. We then deployed our parameter estimates in spatially explicit models of the Sedgwick population to evaluate the extent to which Nep may have changed, as a consequence of progressive stand thinning between 1944 and 1999. Assuming that pollen dispersal distance has not changed, we estimate Nep was 4.57 individuals in 1944, when stand density was 1.48. Both estimates indicate fewer effective fathers than one might expect for wind-pollinated species and fewer than observed elsewhere. The results presented here provide a basis for further refinements on modelling pollen movement. If the trends continue, then ongoing demographic attrition could further reduce neighbourhood size in Valley oak resulting in increased risk of reproductive failure and genetic isolation.  相似文献

Ectomycorrhizal (ECM) hyphal communities have not been well characterized. Furthermore, there have been few studies where the ECM hyphal community is compared to fungi detected as sporocarps or ECM-colonized root tips. We investigated fungi present as hyphae in a well-studied California Quercus–Pinus woodland. Hyphal species present were compared to those found as sporocarps and ECM root tips at the same site. Hyphae were extracted from root-restrictive nylon mesh in-growth bags buried in the soil near mature Quercus douglasii, Quercus wislizeni, and Pinus sabiniana. Taxa were identified using PCR, cloning, and DNA sequencing of internal transcribed spacer and 28s rDNA. Among the 33 species detected, rhizomorph-forming ECM fungi dominated the hyphal community, especially species of Thelephoraceae and Boletales. Most fungi in soils near Quercus spp. and P. sabiniana were ECM basidiomycetes, but we detected two ECM ascomycetes and three non-mycorrhizal fungi. Many ECM species present as hyphae were also previously detected at this site as sporocarps (18%) or on ECM root tips (58%). However, the hyphal community was mostly dominated by different taxa than either the sporocarp or ECM root communities.  相似文献

Blue oak (Quercus douglasii) is a deciduous tree species endemic to California that currently exhibits poor seedling survival to sapling age classes. We used common garden techniques to examine how genetic variation at regional and local scales affected phenotypic expression in traits affecting oak seedling growth and survival. Between-population variation was examined for seedlings grown from acorns collected from a northern, mesic population and a southern, xeric population. Within-population variation was examined by comparing seedlings from different maternal families within the mesic population. Acorns were planted into neighborhoods of an annual dicot (Erodium botrys), an annual grass (Bromus diandrus), and a perennial bunchgrass (Nassella pulchra). By varying the species composition of herbaceous neighborhoods into which acorns were planted, the interactive effects of competition and acorn germplasm source on phenotypic expression could also be examined. Potential maternal effects, expressed as variation in acorn size, were assessed by weighing each acorn before planting. Probability of seedling emergence increased significantly with acorn size in the xeric population but not in the mesic population. Similarly, the effect of acorn size on seedling leaf area, stem weight, and root weight was also population-dependent. At a within-population level, acorn size effects on seedling traits varied significantly among maternal families. In addition to acorn size effects, rates of oak seedling emergence were also dependent on an interaction of population source and competitive environment. Interactions between maternal family and competitive environment in the expression of seedling leaf characters suggest the possibility of genetic variation for plasticity in traits such as specific leaf area. Using carbon isotope discrimination () as an index of relative water-use efficiency (WUE), higher water use efficiency was indicated for oak seedlings grown in the annual plant neighborhoods compared to seedlings grown in the bunchgrass neighborhood. This trend may represent an adaptive plastic response because, compared to the bunchgrass neighborhood, soil water depletion was more rapid within annual plant neighborhoods.  相似文献

Five-year-old trees of deciduous Quercus robur L., evergreen Q. ilex L., and their semideciduous hybrid, Q. × turneri Willd. (var. pseudoturneri), growing in pots, were subjected to drought stress by withholding water for 18–22 days, until leaf water potentials decreased below ?2 MPa. Gas-exchange rates, oxygen evolution, and modulated chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence measurements revealed that by strong stomata closure and declining photosynthetic capacity down to approximately 50%, all three taxa responded with strongly reduced photosynthesis rates. In Q. robur, photochemical quenching of the drought-stressed plants was much lower than in nonstressed controls. Dissection of the occurring events in the photosynthetic electron transport chain by fast Chl fluorescence induction analysis with the JIP-test were discussed.  相似文献

Increasing climate warming is inducing drought stress and resulting in forest growth decline in many places around the world. The recent climate of northern China has shown trends of both warming and drying. In this study, we obtained tree ring width chronology of Quercus liaotungensis Koidz. from Dongling Mountain, Beijing, China. We divided the temperature series of the study area into cooling (1940–1969) and warming intervals (1970–2016). The climate–tree growth response analysis showed that temperature exerted a limiting impact on the annual radial growth of Q. liaotungensis during the cooling period, whereas the influence of temperature was lower during the warming period. The moving correlation analysis showed that the influence of summer temperature decreased with the warming climate since the 1970s, and that the influence of winter and spring temperatures decreased since the 2000s. The correlation values between the chronology and precipitation decreased during the cooling period, whereas spring and early summer precipitation correlations began to increase in the 1970s and reached significance (p < 0.05) in the 1990s. Our results show that the positive influence of temperature on radial growth of Q. liaotungensis in the study area has weakened, whereas precipitation has become the dominant regulator with climate warming. These findings suggest that forest growth on Dongling Mountain will decline if climate warming continues in the future.  相似文献

1. The developmental pattern and effect of cortisone on acid beta-galactosidase and neutral beta-galactosidase were studied in postnatal rats by a recently proposed method for their independent determination. 2. After birth the acid beta-galactosidase activity increases in the ileum, whereas it decreases slightly in the jejunum. On day 16 after birth the activity in the ileum decreases and in 20-day-old rats activity in both parts of the intestine decreases to adult values. In suckling animals the activity in the ileum exceeds the jejunal activity severalfold and in adult animals the activity in the jejunum is slightly higher than that in the ileum. 3. Neutral beta-galactosidase activity is high after birth and decreases in both jejunum and ileum after day 20 after birth. In 12-20-day-old rats activity in both parts is essentially the same, but in adult animals jejunal activity exceeds ileal activity four-to five-fold. 4. Cortisone (0.5, 2.0 or 5.0mg/100g body wt. daily for 4 days) does not influence the activity of either enzyme in 60-day-old rats. Acid beta-galactosidase activity is decreased after cortisone treatment in 8-, 12-, 16-and 18-day-old rats, with sensitivity to cortisone increasing with the approach of weaning. No effect of cortisone on acid beta-galactosidase is seen in 8-day-old rats. Neutral beta-galactosidase activity is increased in the ileum of 8-, 12-, 16- and 18-day old rats, but only in the jejunum of 8-and 12-day-old rats.  相似文献

Abstract Conceptual models of terrestrial trophic dynamics have emphasized the potential influence of various abiotic factors, though empirical studies have found generalities to be scarce. Progress may result through an increased use of experimental gradients in tandem with existing, natural gradients of abiotic factors that are more difficult to manipulate. Along an elevation/climatic gradient, a fertilization experiment was conducted to examine the impact of environmentally induced variation in foliar nitrogen on tri-trophic interactions for Phyllonorycter sp., a leaf-miner (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae), in Rocky Mountain white oak, Quercus gambelii. Microclimate determined the relative effect of host-plant and natural-enemy effects for Phyllonorycter sp. Cooler, more humid microclimates resulted in a higher biomass payoff (total biomass/density). Further, increased seasonal variation in foliar nitrogen content at warmer, drier sites significantly increased parasitism rates. Fertilization treatments increased foliar nitrogen content and resulted in increased early-instar mortality. Fertilization treatment also acted in a non-linear fashion with microclimate to influence spatial patterns in parasitism rates. Overall, microclimate was found to affect characteristics of each trophic level, including host-plant nitrogen dynamics, Phyllonorycter sp. performance, and parasitism rates. Additionally, nutrient availability altered patterns of parasitoid-related mortality in Phyllonorycter sp. within microclimates. These results suggest that local topographic variation in combinations of abiotic factors, or abiotic mosaics, has important effects for spatial patterns of tri-trophic interactions.  相似文献

CIRL-1 also called latrophilin 1 or CL belongs to the family of adhesion G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). As all members of adhesion GPSR family CIRL-1 consists of two heterologous subunits, extracellular hydrophilic p120 and heptahelical membrane protein p85. Both CIRL-1 subunits are encoded by one gene but as a result of intracellular proteolysis of precursor, mature receptor has two-subunit structure. It was also shown that a minor portion of the CIRL-1 receptor complexes dissociates, producing the soluble receptor ectodomain, and this dissociation is due to the second cleavage at the site between the site of primary proteolysis and the first transmembrane domain. Recently model of independent localization p120 and p85 on the cell surface was proposed. In this article we evaluated the amount of p120-p85 complex still presented on the cellular membrane and confirmed that on cell surface major amount of mature CIRL-1 presented as a p120-p85 subunit complex.  相似文献

Molecular phylogenetic analyses based on 28S, ITS and IGS rDNA sequences indicate that Erysiphe japonica (≡ Typhulochaeta japonica) consists of two different genetic groups, one group on Quercus aliena, Q. robur and Q. serrata, and another group on Q. crispula var. crispula and Q. crispula var. horikawae. As morphological difference between the two groups are not yet marked distinctly, we suppose that the process of speciation has not yet been finished and propose a new variety, E. japonica var. crispulae, for the latter group based on the difference in host range and the distinct genetic segregation. Quercus robur (pedunculate oak) is a new host of E. japonica.  相似文献

Molecular and geological evidence indicates that the emergence of the Isthmus of Panamá influenced the historical biogeography of the Neotropics in a complex, staggered manner dating back at least 9 Myr bp. To assess the influence of Isthmus formation on the biogeography of the harlequin beetle-riding pseudoscorpion, Cordylochernes scorpioides, we analysed mitochondrial COI sequence data from 71 individuals from 13 locations in Panamá and northern South America. Parsimony and likelihood-based phylogenies identified deep divergence between South American and Panamanian clades. In contrast to low haplotype diversity in South America, the Panamanian Cordylochernes clade is comprised of three highly divergent lineages: one clade consisting predominantly of individuals from central Panamá (PAN A), and two sister clades (PAN B1 and PAN B2) of western Panamanian pseudoscorpions. Breeding experiments demonstrated a strictly maternal mode of inheritance, indicating that our analyses were not confounded by nuclear-mitochondrial pseudogenes. Haplotype diversity is striking in western Atlantic Panamá, where all three Panamanian clades can occur in a single host tree. This sympatry points to the existence of a cryptic species hybrid zone in western Panamá, a conclusion supported by interclade crosses and coalescence-based migration rates. Molecular clock estimates yield a divergence time of approximately 3 Myr between the central and western Panamanian clades. Taken together, these results are consistent with a recent model in which a transitory proto-Isthmus enabled an early wave of colonization out of South America at the close of the Miocene, followed by sea level rise, inundation of the terrestrial corridor and then a second wave of colonization that occurred when the Isthmus was completed approximately 3 Myr bp.  相似文献
