Summary The Thriasian Plain near Athens in Greece is a site of concentrated industrial development. Total concentrations of Pb, Cd and extractable SO4 2– in surface soil samples collected from this area, were found to be, respectively, 2–7, 6–34 and 2–20 times higher than those in similar soil samples from parts of the country remote from industrial activity.Total concentrations of Pb, Cd, Zn, Cr and S in samples of olive leaves from the same area were found to be, respectively, 4–40, 3–10, 3–9, 2–6 and 17–21 times higher than those found in samples of olive leaves from rural sites. Leaves of cabbages growing in the area contained between 0.82 and 40 g/g (wet weight) of Pb.Addition of Cd, Ni and Cu to a calcareous potted soil at concentrations of 100, 200 and 200 ppm increased the concentrations of the metals in the needles of Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis) seedlings to 4.5, 3.5 and 10 ppm, respectively, after 7 months growth in the nursey.  相似文献

The distribution and cycling of lead (Pb) was examined in an urban forest of Aleppo pine stand in Athens. Concentrations of the soluble fraction of Pb in bulk and throughfall deposition were low, reflectingthe change in petrol form in recent years. However, Pb concentrations in forest floor remain high due to Pb accumulation in previous years. The soil A horizon showed unexpectedly high levels of Pb concentration resulted probably from Pb migration from organic horizons. Pb concentrations in pine needles, litterfall and wood were low, whereas tree bark acted as a sink for Pb and stored high amounts of the metal.  相似文献

We studied the effect of soil temperature on nutrient allocation and mycorrhizal development in seedlings of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) during the first 9 weeks of the growing season. One-year-old seedlings were grown in Carex-peat from a drained and forested peatland at soil temperatures of 5, 9, 13 and 17 °C under controlled environmental conditions. Fourteen seedlings from each temperature treatment were harvested at intervals of three weeks and the current and previous year's parts of the roots, stems and needles were separated. Mineral nutrient and Al contents in all plant parts were determined and the tips and mycorrhizas of the new roots were counted. Microbial biomass C and N in the growth medium were determined at the end of the experiment. None of the elements studied, except Fe, were taken up from the soil by the seedlings during the first three weeks. Thereafter, the contents of all the elements increased at all soil temperatures except 5 °C. Element concentrations in needles, stems and roots increased with soil temperature. Higher soil temperature greatly increased the number of root tips and mycorrhizas, and the numbers of mycorrhizas increased more than did the length of new roots. Cenococcum geophilum was relatively more abundant at lower soil temperatures (5 and 9 °C) than at higher ones (13 and 17 °C). A trend was observed for decreased microbial biomass C and N in the peat soil at higher soil temperatures at the end of the experiment.  相似文献

Aleppo pine ( Pinus halepensis Mill.) regenerates after wildfires only by germination. This post-fire germination is controlled by temperature, light and the chemical characteristics of the ash-bed. The extremely high pH caused by the ash inhibits germination of Aleppo pine as well as of many other species. Here we report that ash extracts at neutral pH stimulate P. halepensis germination. The effects of ash extracts, nitrate, ammonium (in concentrations present in the ash) and GA3 on the germination of P. halepensis seeds and on lipase activity at early germination were studied under controlled conditions. Sub-optimal concentrations of nitrate- and ammonium-stimulated germination and the activity of lipase in the seeds. It is proposed that nitrate increases seed sensitivity to GA3 while ammonium directly affects lipase activity. The balance between the inhibition of germination by the high pH of ash and its stimulation by the nitrate and ammonium present in the ash determines the overall effect of the ash on post-fire germination of Aleppo pine. The pine seedlings appear in high density among the trees but because of the effects of the ash they appear in sparse stands under the projection of the burned pine canopies. These seedlings benefit from weak inter- and intra-specific competition as well as improved mineral nutrition and have good chances to grow into large trees that will form the regenerating forest; therefore, the enhancement of P. halepensis germination by nitrate and ammonium and its inhibition by high pH can be considered as ecophysiological adaptations to post-fire regeneration.  相似文献

Effects of water stress on needle ultrastructure of 2-year-old Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and 5-year-old Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.] seedlings were studied in greenhouse experiments. Drought stress was induced by leaving seedlings without watering, and waterlogging stress was produced by submerging the seedling containers in water. Needle samples for ultrastructural analyses were collected several times during the experiments, and samples for nutrient analyses at the end of the experiments. In drought stress, plasmolysis of mesophyll and transfusion parenchyma tissues, aggregation of chloroplast stroma and its separation from thylakoids and decreased size and abundance of starch grains in needles of both species were observed. The concentration of lipid bodies around the chloroplasts were detected in pine needles. Calcium and water concentrations in spruce needles were lower by the end of the experiments compared to controls. In waterlogging treatment, swelling of phloem cells in pine needles and large starch grains, slight swelling of thylakoids and increased translucency of plastoglobuli in chloroplasts of both species studied were observed. The phosphorus concentration in pine needles was higher while phosphorus, calcium and magnesium concentrations in spruce needles were lower in the waterlogging treatments compared to controls. Typical symptoms induced by drought stress, e. g. aggregation of chloroplast stroma and its separation from thylakoids, were detected, but, in waterlogging stress, ultrastructural symptoms appeared to be related to the developing nutrient imbalance of needles.  相似文献

Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis) and the evergreen holm oak (Quercus ilex) dominate forest areas of the Mediterranean Basin. Both species regenerate abundantly after fires: pine through seedlings and holm oak through resprouts. Cumulative nutrient losses caused by frequent fires may have decreased soil nutrient availability in such areas. To assess the role of nitrogen and phosphorus as limiting factors for growth of these species during post-fire recovery, a field fertilisation and competition experiment was conducted in a 5-year post-fire shrubland on calcareous soil, where naturally-regenerated saplings of Aleppo pine and resprouts of interior holm oak (Quercus ilex subsp. rotundifolia) coexist. Three years after fertilisation, relative basal area increment was 56% greater in pines fertilised with 250 kg P ha–1 than in non fertilised ones. N fertilisation had small or no effects. Interactions between N and P fertilisation were not observed. Growth of Aleppo pine only increased with P fertilisation when neighbours were removed. Hence, the negative effect of neighbours on growth was greater when P availability was enhanced by fertilisation. In contrast, holm oak was able to grow more (110%) in response to increased P supply even without neighbour removal. A common garden experiment was then conducted with potted seedlings to investigate whether the suggested higher competitive capacity of holm oak for P held under a range of P amendments on different soils and competitive situations. P fertilisation increased seedling biomass yield of both species. When P availability increased, a negative effect of neighbours on growth was observed for holm oak and in 70 a lesser extent for Aleppo pine. In conclusion, in the field, holm oak resprouts showed higher competitive ability for P uptake compared to Aleppo pine saplings, but in potted seedlings in common garden conditions this trend was not observed. Therefore holm oak is not always competitively superior to Aleppo pine for P. Potted seedlings of both species had a notable plasticity in shoot/root biomass allocation, but only holm oak increased its proportional allocation to roots when neighbours were present. P availability can be a key factor in growth and competitive relations of these two species, but effects differ depending on soil type, individual age, regeneration type (i.e., seedling versus resprouts), and competitive situation. The effects of aluminium chloride (AICI3) treatments (50 and 150 mg/l) on 3-year-old Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) seedlings were studied in a sand culture during 2 growing periods in an open field experiment. Even by the end of the first growing period, a decline was observed in the concentrations of Ca, Mg and P within the needles, and of Ca and Mg in the roots. After the second growing period, increased N and K concentrations were observed in the needles of Al-treated seedlings. Both the needles and roots of Al-treated seedlings showed, after the second growing period, a decline in growth and increased concentrations of AI as the amount of AICI3 in the nutrient solution increased. Al-induced changes in needle structure were found to be symptomatic of a nutrient imbalance, particularly of Mg and P. Al-stress did not result in any observable changes in root anatomy or in the number of mycorrhizas. Scots pine proved to be rather resistant to Al-stress, indicating that direct Al-injuries are not likely in the field, though Al-stress may be a contributing factor in the formation of nutrient imbalances.  相似文献

 Seedlings of Douglas-fir, Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco, and ponderosa pine, Pinus ponderosa Dougl. ex Laws., were grown in a controlled environment and fertilized with nutrient solutions containing 150 ppm (+N), or 0 ppm nitrogen (−N). These treatments greatly altered seedling growth, and the concentrations of N and carbohydrates in their tissues. Metabolically active tissues, such as roots, incubated with a limited supply of O2 became hypoxic faster and synthesized more ethanol than less active tissues, such as needles. All tissues that were incubated for 4 h in N2 synthesized ethanol. Needles incubated in N2 and light had much lower quantities of ethanol than needles in N2 and dark, suggesting that O2 from photosynthetsis limited internal anoxia. Most tissues from +N seedlings synthesized greater quantities of ethanol in N2 anoxia than tissues from −N seedlings, probably because they were able to produce more enzymes with a greater availability of N. However, this increase in ethanol synthesis between N treatments was most pronounced in the phloem. Ethanol and soluble sugar concentrations were negatively related in needles and positively related in roots of N+ seedlings, but not −N seedlings. Starch concentrations had no effect on the amount of ethanol produced by any tissue. Regardless of N treatments, all tissues from ponderosa pine produced more N2-induced ethanol than Douglas-fir, in part because its tissues contained different concentrations of soluble sugars and N as a consequence of phenological differences between the species. However, ponderosa pine tissues may also maintain greater quantities of anaerobic enzymes, or their isozymes than Douglas-fir. Received: 22 February 1998 / Accepted 23 June 1998  相似文献

Free, soluble and insoluble conjugated polyamines from the needles, roots and stem of five month old Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) seedlings inoculated with Suillus variegatus (Fr.) O. Kuntze and seedlings without inoculation were analysed during decrease in daylength and temperature. Temporary changes in free, soluble and insoluble conjugated polyamine pools caused by a decrease in daylength or temperature were observed. Inoculation of pine seedlings affected significantly the polyamine levels of five month old pine seedlings. The roots of inoculated seedlings contained significantly higher levels of free and soluble conjugated purtrescine and free, soluble conjugated and insoluble conjugated spermidine than the roots of noninoculated seedlings. The needles of inoculated seedlings contained significatly higher concentrations of free putrescine and soluble conjugated spermidine but lower amount of free spermine than the needles of noninoculated seedlings. The stems of inoculated seedlings contained higher concentrations of free putrescine but lower amounts of insoluble conjugated spermine. Changes in polyamine levels in noninoculated seedlings were observed after shortening of the daylength, whereas in inoculated ones changes were induced mainly by the decrease in temperature. The possible role of polyamines in the initial stage of cold hardening process is discussed.  相似文献

The effects of two substrates and several strains of mycorrhizal fungi on the content of soluble phenolics in roots and growth of Scots pine seedlings was investigated. The first substrate was fertile and contaminated with copper, zinc and lead, whereas the second one displayed nutrient deficiency. The dry weights of needles, trunks, roots and the total biomass were higher in groups of seedlings inoculated with mycorrhizal fungi on fertile and polluted substrate. Inoculation of pine seedlings on this substrate resulted in a decrease in concentration of phenolics in roots and except for seedlings inoculated with Laccaria laccata negatively influenced the above-ground part: root ratio.  相似文献

Effects of liming and boron fertilization on boron uptake of Picea abies   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The effects of liming on concentrations of boron and other elements in Norway spruce [Picea abies (L) Karst.] needles and in the mor humus layer were studied in long-term field experiments with and without B fertilizer on podzolic soils in Finland. Liming (2000+4000 kg ha-1 last applied 12 years before sampling) decreased needle B concentrations in the four youngest needle age classes from 6–10 mg kg-1 to 5 mg kg-1. In boron fertilized plots the corresponding concentrations were 23–35 mg kg-1 in control plots and 21–29 mg kg-1 in limed plots. Both liming and B fertilizer decreased the Mn concentrations of needles. In the humus layer, total B concentration was increased by both lime and B fertilizer, and Ca and Mg concentrations and pH were still considerably higher in the limed plots than controls. Liming decreased the organic matter concentration in humus layer, whilst B fertilizer increased it.The results about B uptake were confirmed in a pot experiment, in which additionally the roles of increased soil pH and increased soil Ca concentration were separated by means of comparing the effects of CaCO3 and CaSO4. Two-year-old bare-rooted Norway spruce seedlings were grown in mor humus during the extension growth of the new shoot. The two doses of lime increased the pH of soil from 4.1 to 5.6 to 6.1, and correspondingly decreased the B concentrations in new needles from 22 to 12 to 9 mg kg-1. However, CaSO4 did not affect the pH of the soil or needle B concentrations. Hence the liming effect on boron availability in these soils appeared to be caused by the increased pH rather than increased calcium concentration.  相似文献

Summary Experiments on sitka-spruce seedlings grown in acidic peaty gley soils under green-house conditions, where the soils where doped with increasing amounts of Cd, Cu and Pb up to maximum levels of metal added of 16 ppm, 32 ppm and 400 ppm respectively, showed that the levels of Cd and Pb in shoots and roots increased with increasing levels in the soil, whereas levels of copper appeared to be independent. The addition of these three metals to the soils did not influence the uptake of other heavy metals, or of the nutrients potassium or calcium. Increases in the shoot cadmium levels significantly reduced the yields of the plant shoots. However, the plant yields were only affected by the highest level of lead that was added to the soil (400 ppm Pb) and unaffected by all the copper treatments (0–32 ppm Cu in the soil). The lengths of the sitka-spruce roots were reduced when cadmium and lead levels in the soil exceeded certain threshold concentrations (2.5 ppm total Cd, where 0.3 ppm was extractable with 0.5 M acetic acid; and 48 ppm total Pb, where 1.7 ppm was extractable). However, root lengths were not reduced by copper. This was probably related to the fact that copper appears to be relatively unavailable in the type of soil used, as only 1.1. ppm Cu was extractable from a total of 32 ppm Cu added. Root branching was apparently reduced by increases in the soil levels of cadmium, copper and lead. The roots of some control plants had symbiotic mycorrhizal associations (4 out of 19 plants), whereas the roots of all the plants grown in the soils with added heavy metals did not develop these.  相似文献

The nutrient cycling and foliar status for the elements Ca, Mg, K, N, P, S, Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu were investigated in an urban forest of Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis) in 2004 in Athens, Greece in order to draw conclusions on the productivity status and health of the ecosystem. The fluxes of bulk and throughfall deposition were characterized by the high amounts of Ca, organic N and sulfate S. The magnitude of the sulfate S fluxes indicated a polluted atmosphere. The nutrient enrichment in throughfall was appreciable for ammonium N, P and Mn. The mineral soil formed the largest pool for all the elements followed by the forest floor, trunk wood and trunk bark. The understory vegetation consisting of annual plants proved important for storing N, P and K. Compared to current year needles of Aleppo pine in remote forests of Spain, the needles of the Aleppo pine trees in Athens had significantly higher concentrations of Ca, N, P and Cu and significantly lower concentrations of Mg and Zn. The soil had a high concentration of calcium carbonate and accordingly high pH values. When all inputs to the forest floor were taken into account, the mean residence time of nutrients in the forest floor followed the order Fe > Mn > Cu > Ca > Mg > P > Zn > N > K > S.  相似文献

矿区重金属污染十分严重,寻找和发现适合当地气候与土壤条件的重金属耐性植物是矿区植被恢复和污染土壤修复的前提。对我国湖南柿竹园有色金属矿区调查发现,该地区选矿厂的重金属污染问题普遍比尾砂库严重。选矿厂土壤砷、镉、铅、锌严重超标,尾砂库周围也受到不同程度的重金属污染。土壤重金属胁迫效应影响着植物物种分布,选矿厂物种分布较少,相比之下尾砂库的植物多样性较为丰富。柿竹园矿区植物对重金属的吸收表现为富集型(如蜈蚣草Pteris Vittata L .和苎麻Boehmerianivea (L .) Gaud.)、根部囤积型(如攀倒甑Patrinia villosa和木贼Equisetum hyemale)和规避型(如蔓出卷柏Selaginelladavidii Franch和芒草Miscanthus sinensis Andlerss)等3种类型。  相似文献

Scots pine nursery seedlings were planted in pots, five seedlings per treatment, and placed in an experimental field at the University of Oulu in northern Finland at the beginning of June 1997. Copper and nickel sulphates were mixed with forest mineral soil before seedling planting. The metal levels ranged from 0 to 25 mg Ni kg(-1) dry soil and 0 to 50 mg Cu kg(-1) in dry soil and in combinations of both metals. Current year's needles for element analyses, EDS microanalyses, microscopy and glutathione and peroxidase activity analyses were collected from 1-5 seedlings per treatment in September. Seedling biomass in controls, Cu25 and Cu50 differed significantly from the Ni25Cu50 treatment. The root/shoot ratio was highest in the Ni5 treatment, indicating good root growth, though the roots were visibly healthier in the Cu25 treatment than in the Ni5 treatment. At higher Ni levels, the condition of roots deteriorated. The proportion of plasmolysed mesophyll cells was highest in the Ni25 treatment. Copper-treated seedlings did not suffer from Cu stress, because no severe injuries were seen in either the roots or the needles in Cu-exposed seedlings. The needle concentrations of Cu increased only slightly due to treatments. Ni accumulation in needles increased with increasing concentrations in soil. Needles of Cu-treated seedlings had less oxidized glutathione than those of Ni-treated seedlings, but the roots had higher, not significantly, peroxidase activity levels. Light-colored, swollen thylakoids were occasionally observed in the Ni25Cu50 treatment, indicating some interaction between Ni and Cu. Ni seemed to cause more oxidative stress to the seedlings than copper, which was manifested as a decreased GSH level and an increased proportion of GSSG in the Ni treatments. Copper together with nickel strongly decreased root growth, the root/shoot ratio being lowest in the Ni25Cu50 treatment.  相似文献

用Pb(NO3 ) 2 10mmol/L处理芦苇幼苗 7d后 ,检测铅在其不同器官、细胞不同区隔和不同化学状态之间的分布以及铅胁迫相关蛋白。结果显示 ,受铅污染后芦苇幼苗根、地下茎、茎和叶片的铅含量增加 ,它们的大小顺序为根 >地下茎 >茎 >叶片。细胞不同部分铅含量的大小顺序为细胞间隙 >细胞壁 >液泡 >细胞质。在根部和叶片中 ,均以活性较低的醋酸可提取态铅和盐酸可提取态铅占优势。在铅胁迫下 ,从芦苇根和叶片中检测出一些铅结合蛋白。另外 ,铅除诱导芦苇合成一种新的不结合铅的蛋白质外 ,还导致一种分子量大约为 72 0 0 0的蛋白质消失。芦苇抗铅胁迫有以下几种机制 :根部比地上部分积累较多的铅 ;铅在体内形成难溶性化合物 ;铅沉淀在质外体内 ;形成铅结合蛋白质和诱导蛋白  相似文献

Lignin mineralization activity of three basidiomycetous litter-decomposing fungi (LDF) was studied with humus layer samples taken from a boreal forest soil. The total Pb concentration in the samples was 32,000 mg kg(-1) and water soluble Pb 67 mg kg(-1). Synthetic lignin mineralization by Collybia dryophila and Clitocybe (Lepista) nebularis was strongly inhibited, whereas Stropharia coronilla was more tolerant to Pb stress in soil and liquid cultures. Purified laccases maintained their activity and purified MnPs remained partly active up to a concentration of 1450 mg Pb l(-1). High concentrations of Pb inhibited the growth of LDF and affected the activity of ligninolytic enzymes, but the extent of inhibition varied among different LDF species. In consequence, Pb contamination in soil may have a negative impact on recycling of organic carbon.  相似文献

Summary Concentrations of about 26,000 ppm Zn, 10,000 ppm Fe, 2,300 ppm Pb, 900 ppm Cd, 340 ppm Cu, and 0.40% S were measured in the O2 litter horizon about 1 km from a zinc smelter at Palmerton, Pennsylvania. Samples taken about 6 km east of the smelter had concentrations of about 15,000 ppm Zn, 6,500 ppm Fe, 970 ppm Pb, 250 ppm Cd, 170 ppm Cu, and 0.26% S. Samples from a control area about 40 km east of the smelter had concentrations of 2,800 ppm Fe, 650 ppm Zn, 260 ppm Pb, 50 ppm Cu, 9 ppm Cd, and 0.13% S.Litter bags were used to estimate first-year weight loss in sassafras leaves and a mixture of chestnut oak/red oak leaves in the three sites. At the end of one year, average weight loss for sassafras was 39.3% in the control site, 21.8% at 6 km, and 17.5% at the 1 km site. For the chestnut oak/red oak mixture, average weight loss was 36.8% (40 km), 25.7% (6 km), and 19.1% (1 km). Numbers and diversity of soil microarthropods inhabiting the litter bags showed a corresponding decline at sites near the smelter. Concentrations of Ca, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, N, Na, Ni, P, Pb, S and Zn in the decomposing litter were also measured.The average amount of organic matter on the forest floor was estimated to be 3.8 kg/m2 in the control site, about 3.8 kg/m2 at 6 km, and about 8.1 kg/m2 1 km from the smelter. Average thickness of the litter horizons in these three sites was 6.0 cm (40 km), 7.0 cm (6 km), and 12.4 cm (1 km), suggesting a long-term depression of decomposition and mineral cycling near the smelter.  相似文献

An investigation of selected Aleppo pines in the forests of Mt Hymettus and Mt Parnis near Athens (Greece) was undertaken at three different sites in the period 1999–2003, because a considerable proportion of pine trees showed visible signs of chlorotic mottle. This condition is characteristic of high and prolonged levels of ozone exposure. Needles from Aleppo pine trees (Pinus halepensis Mill.) were analyzed for their manganese content in combination with Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectra of Mn2+, involved in photosystem II. Manganese is considered as an important bioindicator for the vitality of trees. Also, we investigated the EPR spectrum of the needles in the region of g=2.0045 for healthy and diseased trees. The antioxidant capacity of the needles extract was measured from trees by the DPPH method. Finally, seasonal changes in chlorophyll concentration in the needles were measured to evaluate the effects of ozone. Measurements of ozone concentrations at the three sites showed that there were elevated levels during the summer months. Our experimental results suggest that the concentration of manganese in the needles was lower in the area with higher ozone concentrations, supported by EPR measurements. Higher ozone concentrations also affected the antioxidant potential of the needles and their chlorophyll content during summer months. Our findings also confirmed the resilience of Aleppo pines under stressful conditions and recovery in winter months. Despite the experimental problems, EPR spectra of Mn2+ in combination with other methods can be used as a sensitive bioindicator for ozone pollution, and is the result of oxidative stress affecting the growth cycle of the pine trees and their photosynthetic mechanisms.  相似文献

1 The pine weevil Hylobius abietis (L.) (Coleoptera, Curculionidae) is an economically important pest of conifer forest regeneration in Europe and Asia. 2 Soil scarification, which usually exposes mineral soil, is widely used to protect seedlings from weevil attack. However, the mechanism behind this protective effect is not yet fully understood. 3 Field experiments were conducted to determine the pine weevil's responses to visual and odour stimuli from seedlings when moving on mineral soil and on undisturbed humus surface. 4 One experiment measured the number of pine weevils approaching seedlings, with and without added host odour, on mineral soil and undisturbed humus. Seedlings with added host odour attracted more weevils on both soil types. Unexpectedly, somewhat more weevils approached seedlings surrounded by mineral soil. 5 In a similar experiment, feeding attacks on seedlings planted directly in the soil were recorded. Only half as many seedlings were attacked on mineral soil as on undisturbed humus. 6 In the first experiment, the weevils were trapped 2.5 cm from the bases of the seedlings' stems, whereas they could reach the seedlings in the experiment where seedlings were planted directly in the soil. We conclude that the pine weevils' decision on whether or not to feed on a seedling is strongly influenced by the surrounding soil type and that this decision is taken in the close vicinity of the seedling. The presence of pure mineral soil around the seedling strongly reduces the likelihood that an approaching pine weevil will feed on it.  相似文献
