Brains of 1664 subjects (895 males and 769 females) aged from 20 to 89 years have been studied. The whole material being investigated was divided, within sex groups, into body-height classes and age classes. The class interval within the age classes was 10 years, that in height classes 5 cm. Mean arithmetics, standard deviations, standard error as well as coefficients of variation and correlation for respective classes have been calculated. It has been ascertained that the brain weight depends on the body height. In tall subjects no brains of extremely low absolute weight are encountered and, adversely, high brain weight is seldom met in short individuals. The body height also exerts certain influence upon the relative weight of the brain. More favourable proportion between the brain weight and the body length has been revealed in short subjects. Tall individuals are characterized by a low relative weight of the brain. It should be supposed that the spinal cord weight is higher in the latter subjects. The differences between the mean absolute weight of women's brains and that in men of the same age class are conditioned by the difference in the body length. A constant magnitude of difference in the mean brain weight in subjects of the same body height claims 100 g. The paper provides 2 enclosed tables representing obtained results for arithmetic mean of the absolute brain weight both in the age classes and body height classes. The differences between the mean weights of brains in women as well as in men are not significant. The coefficient of correlation between the brain weight and the body height is for men r male1 = 0.2008 for women r female1 = 0.2630, wherease the coefficient of regression for the brain weight is r male2 = 3.67 and r female2 = 3.906 respectively.  相似文献

Summary As early as 1926 the present author has claimed that in the self-purification of water (under experimental conditions realized in the laboratory) bacteriophages take no part, at least not an easily discernable one. The investigations ofSchuurman on the significance of typhoid phages in the self-purification of the water in the Tjiliwoeng river induced the author to attack the problem once more from the experimental side. The results of these recent investigations allow of no other conclusion than that under circumstances and conditions as have been fully described, bacteriophages do not act on the self-purification of water. It might be conceived, that the high temperature of the Tjiliwoeng river and its high content of colloidal clay allow the phage to play a certain part, although the results of the author's experiments make this hardly probable. At all events such an influence is neither proved nor made probable by the results ofSchuurman's experiments with the untreated Tjiliwoeng water, because of his failing to exclude the action of the protozoa.  相似文献

Summary I hypothesize that three conditions, (1) food-shelter coincidence, (2) strong selection for defense, and (3) ability to defend, are sufficient, although not necessary, for the evolution of eusociality in group-living animals. Reasons for this association between ecology and eusociality include extremely high value of the habitat, possibilities for habitat inheritance, high relatedness in claustral situations, self-sufficiency of juveniles, greater ability of workers to reproduce, and trade-offs between defensive ability and dispersal.  相似文献

It is well known that pulp density and particle size determine the available surface area concentration and have an influence in the overall rate of bioleaching of minerals. As metal solubilization takes place through the surface area of the particles, it can be expected that different combinations of pulp densities and particle sizes giving the same surface area concentration would determine the same leaching rate. The objective of this work was to test this hypothesis on the effect of surface area concentration, pulp density and particle size of the biooxidation of a pyritic gold concentrate by the thermophilic Archaeon Sulfolobus metallicus in shake flasks. The gold concentrate was used at 2.5%, 5%, 10%, and 15% w/v pulp density and at four size fractions: 150–106, 106–75, 75–38 and –38 μm. Temperature was 68°C and the initial pH was 2.0. Results showed that the volumetric productivities of iron and sulfate depend not only on the surface area concentration but also on pulp density and particle size considered separately. These two variables not only determine surface area but also exert additional effects on the process, so the hypothesis was not confirmed. Maximum attained iron productivity was 1.042 g/l day with the 75–38 μm fraction at 5% pulp density. Maximum sulfate productivity was 4.279 g/l day with the 75–38 μm fraction at 10% pulp density.  相似文献

Verbal models have hypothesized a relation between body size and the successful introduction of animal species. This relation is largely based on studies of intrinsic rate of increase in what have been termed "colonizing" species. From these studies it has been predicted that introduction success should be negatively correlated with body size across taxa but positively correlated within closely related taxa. T examine this relation for globally introduced land birds. Introduced land birds are. on average, larger bodied than extant land bird species. Across species, families, and higher family nodes, global introduction success is significantly related to decreasing body size. However, within taxa there is a significant positive relationship between introduction success and body size. I discuss possible explanations for the observed relations and conclude that an indirect but genuine relationship between the introduction success of land birds and their body size is currently the most plausible.  相似文献

For decades we are used to judge our body composition by using the body mass index (BMI). Since the BMI denominator can be considered as a substitute for body surface area (BSA), the body mass/body surface ratio (BM/BSA) can be calculated. For a distribution of BM/BSA values comparable to the distribution of normal BMI values, the range 35.5-39.9 kg/m2 is chosen as normal, although it covers BM range 50 to 90 kg. The proposed normal BM/BSA range suggests that heavy adults with less than 2 m of height are not obese only if they are less than 90 kg. If the described limitations of the BM/BSA ratio are valid, then the BMI should be regarded as a biased tool, less applicable to individuals with body masses outside the 55 to 90 kg BM range. If we consider many health problems related to the increased body mass, it is possible that the BMI should be used with caution in heavy individuals.  相似文献

Disunified explanations claim that the traits of human beings are due to causal processes not at work in the rest of nature. This paper outlines a methodology for testing hypotheses of these two types. Implications are drawn concerning evolutionary psychology, adaptationism, and anti-adaptationism. The incompressibility of the lipid bilayer keeps the total surface area of the red cell membrane constant. Local conservation of membrane surface area requires that each surface element of the membrane skeleton keeps its area when its aspect ratio is changed. A change in area would require a flow of lipids past the intrinsic proteins to which the skeleton is anchored. in fast red cell deformations, there is no time for such a flow. Consequently, the bilayer provides for local area conservation. In quasistatic deformations, the extent of local change in surface area is the smaller the larger the isotropic modulus of the skeleton in relation to the shear modulus. Estimates indicate: (a) the velocity of relative flow between lipid and intrinsic proteins is proportional to the gradient in normal tension within the skeleton and inversely proportional to the viscosity of the bilayer; (b) lateral diffusion of lipids is much slower than this flow; (c) membrane tanktreading at frequencies prevailing in vivo as well as the release of a membrane tongue from a micropipette are fast deformations; and (d) the slow phase in micropipette aspiration may be dominated by a local change in skeleton surface.  相似文献

The human tongue is a relatively symmetrical anatomical structure and is generally assumed functionally equivalent on both sides. Experimental evaluation of this assumption is complicated by the fact that psychophysical measurements tend to vary considerably across testing sessions. To address functional laterality, we determined the detection thresholds of six right-handed and six left-handed subjects for Na saccharin, NaCl, citric acid and quinine HCl. Five pairs of interwoven, left and right unilateral thresholds were obtained for each taste stimulus in 12 subjects (n = 480 separate thresholds). In most cases mean sensitivity based on multiple measurements was found to be laterally symmetrical, however, we observed a few cases of lateral asymmetry of both general and compound-specific sensitivity. Threshold values were found to vary considerably across sessions, consistent with the test-retest variability previously reported for whole mouth thresholds. We conclude that taste threshold sensitivity is equivalent on the left and right anterior tongue for most individuals. Given the occasional exceptions to this rule, however, it is advisable to employ a counterbalanced design for any experimental or clinical testing protocol in which treatments are applied asymmetrically to the tongue.  相似文献

This paper discusses how women's body image or experience of the body influences their identity and self-image. What are the implications of this tendency to equate the body and the self? For many women, being a dieter represents not only something that they do, but also an important aspect of how they see themselves. We propose that choosing to become a chronic dieter is a means of regulating not just one's feelings, but also one's identity and self-image when those central aspects of the self feel threatened. Weight-loss dieting is often unsuccessful, however, and repeated dieting attempts may increase weight as often as they reduce it, so using body shape to determine self-worth or identity is a maladaptive strategy for most women.  相似文献

An inverse relationship between smoking and body weight has been documented in the medical literature, but the effect of cigarette smoking on obesity remains inconclusive. In addition, the evidence is mixed on whether rising obesity rates are an unintended consequence of successful anti-smoking policies. This study re-examines these relationships using data from China, the largest consumer and manufacturer of tobacco in the world that is also experiencing a steady rise in obesity rates. We focus on the impact of the total number of cigarettes smoked per day on individuals’ body mass index (BMI) and on the likelihood of being overweight and obese. Instrumental variables estimation is used to correct for the endogeneity of cigarette smoking. We find a moderate negative and significant relationship between cigarette smoking and BMI. Smoking is also negatively related to being overweight and obese, but the marginal effects are small and statistically insignificant for being obese. Quantile regression analyses reveal that the association between smoking and BMI is quite weak among subjects whose BMIs are at the high end of the distribution but are considerably stronger among subjects in the healthy weight range. Ordered probit regression analyses also confirm these findings. Our results thus reconcile an inverse average effect of smoking on body weight with the absence of any significant effect on obesity. From a policy perspective these findings suggest that, while smoking cessation may lead to moderate weight gain among subjects of healthy weight, the effects on obese subjects are modest and should not be expected to lead to a large increase in obesity prevalence rates.  相似文献

Later this month the government will be consulting on whether the environment should be adopted as a new key area for their Health of the Nation strategy. It is proposing to have five topic areas and to adopt 10-15 environmental targets. This would reaffirm its commitment to linking environmental policy and health policy following publication earlier this year of its environmental health action plan. Critics may respond to the consultation document with suggestions for more far reaching targets--based, for example, on the "Health for All" targets from the World Health Organisation, or those arising out of Agenda 21 from the earth summit in Rio De Janeiro. We show via a Liapunov function that in every model ecosystem governed by generalized Lotka-Volterra equations, a feasible steady state is globally asymptotically stable if the number of interaction branches equals n-1, where n is the number of species. This means that the representative graph for which the theorem holds is a 'tree' and not only an alimentary chain. Our result is valid also in the case of non-homogeneous systems, which model situations in which input fluxes are present.  相似文献

The amyloidoses are the prototype gain of toxic function protein misfolding diseases. As such, several naturally occurring animal models and their inducible variants provided some of the first insights into these disorders of protein aggregation. With greater analytic knowledge and the increasing flexibility of transgenic and gene knockout technology, new models have been generated allowing the interrogation of phenomena that have not been approachable in more reductionist systems, i.e. behavioral readouts in the neurodegenerative diseases, interactions among organ systems in the transthyretin amyloidoses and taking pre-clinical therapeutic trials beyond cell culture. The current review describes the features of both transgenic and non-transgenic models and discusses issues that appear to be unresolved even when viewed in their organismal context.  相似文献
