Summary Observations and experiments carried out on a coral reef off the Pacific coast of Panamá demonstrated that shrimp (Alpheus lottini) and crab (Trapezia spp.) symbionts that protect their host coral (Pocillopora elegans) can detect an approaching sea star predator (Acanthaster planci) by chemical cues. Simulated feeding attacks by Acanthaster in sealed transparent bags elicited only 0.5 defensive responses (snipping at spines and tube feet, jerking the sea star, and snapping) per 3 min; defensive behavior increased significantly to 4 and 5 responses, respectively, for Acanthaster in perforated bags and for Acanthaster in direct contact with coral. Neutralized (boiled) Acanthaster elicited only 3 defensive interactions per 3 min compared with 12 interactions for live Acanthaster. Simulated feeding attacks by Oreaster, a non-corallivorous sea star, elicited only 0.5 defensive responses per 3 min, whereas Oreaster introduced with Acanthaster water increased the level of defensive responses to 7. These results suggest that chemical, and to a lesser extent visual (physical presence and movements of sea star), cues stimulate the defensive behavior of the symbiotic crustaceans. The ability to detect a predator at a distance is probably advantageous because in responding only to an actual threat it minimizes the time the defending symbionts spend in an exposed position on the terminal branches of the host coral and because it alerts the crustaceans to sea stars feeding at night.  相似文献

Abstract

Qualitative evidence suggests sea stars are free of fouling organisms; however the presence of fouling-resistant surfaces of sea stars has not previously been documented. Field surveys were conducted in northern Queensland, Australia, during the wet and dry seasons and several tropical sea star species were examined for surface-associated micro- and macro-organisms. Mean bacterial abundances on seven sea star species were approximately 104 to 105 cells cm?2 during both seasons. There were no consistent trends in bacterial abundances with season, species and aboral positions on sea star arms. No common generalist fouling organisms, such as algae, barnacles, serpulid polychaetes, bryozoans and ascidians, were found on any specimens of 12 sea star species. However, low numbers of parasitic and commensal macro-organisms were found on six sea star species. The gastropods Parvioris fulvescens, Asterolamia hians, Thyca (Granulithyca) nardoafrianti and Thyca crystallina were found exclusively on the sea stars Archaster typicus, Astropecten indicus, Nardoa pauciforis and Linckia laevigata, respectively. The shrimp Periclimenes soror was only found on Acanthaster planci, and the polychaete Ophiodromus sp. on A. typicus. The copepods Stellicola illgi and Paramolgus sp. were only found on L. laevigata and Echinaster luzonicus, respectively. As no common generalist fouling organisms were discovered, sea stars offer an excellent model to investigate the mechanisms driving fouling-resistant surfaces and the selective settlement of specialist invertebrates.  相似文献

Biotic disturbances are important drivers of community structure, but interactions among community members can determine trajectories of response and recovery. On coral reefs in French Polynesia, epibiotic amphipods induce the formation of branch-like “fingers” on flat colonies of encrusting Montipora coral. The fingers form as coral encrusts the amphipods’ tubes and lead to significant changes in colony morphology. I tested whether the induced morphological changes affect Montipora’s susceptibility to predation by pincushion (Culcita novaeguineae) and crown-of-thorns sea stars (Acanthaster planci). Montipora with fingers were less likely to be attacked and more likely to survive attack than colonies without fingers. Furthermore, the presence of fingers altered A. planci prey preference. Sea stars preferred Montipora without fingers over other common coral genera, but preferred other genera when Montipora had fingers. Amphipods indirectly affected Montipora’s resistance and resilience to predation, and the susceptibility of other coral genera to predation, through induced morphological changes. Such trait-mediated indirect interactions likely play an important role in determining how species respond to periodic sea star outbreaks.  相似文献

Community-wide feeding interrelationships in a low-diversity coral reef off the Pacific coast of Panamá (Uva Island reef) demonstrate complex pathways involving herbivore, strong corallivore, and carnivore interactions. Four trophic levels with 31 interguild links are identified in a generalized food web, and documented feeding interrelationships with 287+ species links are portrayed in a coral–corallivore subweb. The importance of trophic groups changes greatly with time, from unknown causes over annual to decadal-scale periods, and during very strong El Niño–Southern Oscillation events such that intermittent intense herbivory by echinoids (Diadema) and corallivory by gastropod mollusks, the crown-of-thorns sea star Acanthaster, hermit crabs, and fishes result in high levels of coral mortality and bioerosion of reef substratum. Intraregional differences in species composition and abundances affecting food-web interactions are briefly described for nonupwelling (Uva Island) and upwelling areas (Pearl Islands) in Panamá. Seasonal upwelling in the Pearl Islands results in high plankton productivity, which likely augments production in invertebrates, fishes, marine mammals, and seabirds, but these pathways still remain largely unquantified. The corallivore Acanthaster is absent from upwelling centers in Panamá and from upwelling and nonupwelling areas in the southern and central Galápagos Islands, and the highly destructive, facultative corallivore Eucidaris galapagensis occurs only in the latter offshore islands and at Cocos Island. Relatively recent declines in the abundances of manta rays, sharks, and spiny lobsters are correlated with, but not necessarily causally linked to, increasing fishing activities in the late 1970s to early 1980s. The extent to which the complex yet highly unstable Uva Island food web is representative of other eastern Pacific coral reef ecosystems remains to be investigated.  相似文献

Allostichaster polyplax is a fissiparous (capable of reproducing asexually by fission) sea star found in intertidal and shallow subtidal habitats in New Zealand and Australia. A localized population of A. polyplax occurred at a density of 2.7?individuals?m?2 in an intertidal boulder field at Otago Harbour, South Island, New Zealand. The percentage of sea stars undergoing fission, recorded from January 2010 to March 2011, peaked in January (midsummer) in both years. The frequency of fission decreased for larger sea stars (mean arm length, R?>?25?mm), suggesting an ontogenic shift from asexual to sexual reproduction. Effects of fission (i.e. arm regeneration) and food availability (small gastropods) on growth, storage and sexual reproduction were examined in a factorial laboratory experiment. There was no effect of arm regeneration or food on total arm growth. Storage capacity, measured as pyloric caeca index (PCI), was greater in full-armed than regenerating sea stars, and greater in fed than starved individuals. Fed individuals had a similar PCI as field-collected ones. Gonads were observed in two individuals (males) in the full-armed and fed treatment. Fission did not occur during the experiment. Feeding rate on snails was greater for full-armed than regenerating sea stars. Water temperature had a weak positive effect on the feeding rate of regenerating sea stars. Our findings suggest that fission and subsequent growth of ramets can sustain demographically stable and geographically isolated populations of A. polyplax. The role of sexual reproduction in population dynamics and connectivity of this species (and fissiparous sea stars in general) remains equivocal and requires further research on genetic differentiation within and among populations.  相似文献

Despite their significant influence on coral reef ecosystems, causes of population outbreaks of crown-of-thorns starfish (Acanthaster planci L.) are still poorly understood. Essentially, outbreaks of A. planci could arise from either (1) a single mass recruitment event or (2) the progressive accumulation of starfish from multiple cohorts. This study explored fine-scale variation in the size, distribution, and abundance of A. planci, during an outbreak at Lizard Island in the northern Great Barrier Reef, to assess the mechanism by which the outbreak occurred. Densities of A. planci around Lizard Island increased very gradually from October 1994 until December 1996, then remained at around 1.0 starfish per 200 m2 until June 1998. The population of A. planci comprised individuals ranging in size from 11-cm to 62-cm diameter, representing individuals from multiple (at least four) different cohorts. These data suggest that the outbreak of A. planci at Lizard Island resulted from a prolonged build-up in starfish numbers through multiple successive recruitment events. This study shows that outbreaks of A. planci may arise independently of any sudden or substantial increase in rates of recruitment, such that any factor(s) responsible for the initial onset of outbreaks are likely to be very subtle and difficult to detect.  相似文献

Summary Various species of frogs and toads, belonging to the genera Bufo, Atelopus, Dendrobates, Colostethus, and Eleutherodactylus, occur in the leaf litter in rainforest in Panamá. This study compares the litter communities at two sites in Panamá: Pipeline Road, the drier site, and Carti Road, the wetter site. At both sites, frog abundance is greater in the dry season, when abundance of their prey, the litter arthropods, is greater. Species diversity does not change seasonally at either site; however, species diversity differs strikingly between sites, with Carti Road having the greater species diversity. Similarity in diet does not vary consistently with seasonal changes in food abundance at a single site or with differences in species diversity between sites. These results suggest that neither moisture nor food abundance alone influences the abundance or the diversity of litter frogs at these two sites in Panamá.  相似文献

Population outbreaks of the coral-eating crown-of-thorns seastar, Acanthaster planci, continue to kill more coral on Indo-Pacific coral reefs than other disturbances, but the causes of these outbreaks have not been resolved. In this study, we combine (1) results from laboratory experiments where larvae were reared on natural phytoplankton, (2) large-scale and long-term field data of river floods, chlorophyll concentrations and A. planci outbreaks on the Great Barrier Reef (GBR), and (3) results from A. planci—coral population model simulations that investigated the relationship between the frequency of outbreaks and larval food availability. The experiments show that the odds of A. planci larvae completing development increases ~8-fold with every doubling of chlorophyll concentrations up to 3 μg l−1. Field data and the population model show that river floods and regional differences in phytoplankton availability are strongly related to spatial and temporal patterns in A. planci outbreaks on the GBR. The model also shows that, given plausible historic increases in river nutrient loads over the last 200 years, the frequency of A. planci outbreaks on the GBR has likely increased from one in 50–80 years to one every 15 years, and that current coral cover of reefs in the central GBR may be 30–40% of its potential value. This study adds new and strong empirical support to the hypothesis that primary A. planci outbreaks are predominantly controlled by phytoplankton availability.  相似文献

This article reports on domestication as a simple way to promote plant conservation in indigenous villages. We developed simple methods to germinate or transplant palm species central to the traditional livelihood of two Panamanian nations: the Emberá and the Wounaan. The target species were Astrocaryum standleyanum, Sabal mauritiiformis and Socratea exorrhiza. The youngest fully expanded leaf of Astrocaryum provides prime material for weaving baskets that are a major source of income for the Emberá and Wounaan communities of Panamá. Sabal and Socratea are the two most important species for traditional architecture. They provide, respectively, the roofs and floor of the round, open-sided Emberá–Wounaan houses. For each of the three target species, different treatments were tested to obtain germination rates as high as possible. Regardless of the treatments to which seeds were subjected, germination of Astrocaryum was difficult and slow. It took 13 months to break dormancy and the germination success was around 40%. However, the two other species, especially Socratea, were easy to germinate. Our project succeeded in introducing the practice of nursery and cultivation in over 20 indigenous villages of Panamá. It is hoped that such forestry approaches to conservation can help protect important components of biodiversity while giving access to the resource to people whose lifestyle depends on them.  相似文献

Abstract

A turbulent channel flow apparatus was used to determine the adhesion strength of the three perimetamorphic stages of the asteroid Asterina gibbosa, i.e. the brachiolaria larvae, the metamorphic individuals and the juveniles. The mean critical wall shear stresses (wall shear stress required to dislodge 50% of the attached individuals) necessary to detach larvae attached by the brachiolar arms (1.2 Pa) and juveniles attached by the tube feet (7.1 Pa) were one order of magnitude lower than the stress required to dislodge metamorphic individuals attached by the adhesive disc (41 Pa). This variability in adhesion strength reflects differences in the functioning of the adhesive organs for these different life stages of sea stars. Brachiolar arms and tube feet function as temporary adhesion organs, allowing repetitive cycles of attachment to and detachment from the substratum, whereas the adhesive disc is used only once, at the onset of metamorphosis, and is responsible for the strong attachment of the metamorphic individual, which can be described as permanent adhesion. The results confirm that the turbulent water channel apparatus is a powerful tool to investigate the adhesion mechanisms of minute organisms.  相似文献

The effect of phytoplankton size on feeding rates of planktonic larvae of the crown-of-thorns starfish Acanthaster planci (L.) was evaluated by examining their gut contents under an epifluorescence microscope. Concentrations of coccoid cyanobacteria in natural seawater ranged between 1.73 and 5.33×105 cells ml-1 and were three to four orders of magnitude greater than that of eukaryotes. Under these conditions, A. planci larvae ingested similar or smaller numbers of cyanobacteria than eukaryotes. Consequently, clearance rates of A. planci larvae on cyanobacteria were approximately three orders of magnitude lower than those on eukaryotes. Cyanobacteria and eukaryotes in the gut of A. planci larvae had mean equivalent spherical diameters (ESD) of 1–2 μm and 3.6–4.6 μm, respectively. Thus, the volume of cyanobacteria ingested was less than 10% of the volume of eukaryotes ingested. Acanthaster planci larvae were fed cultured phytoplankton Dunaliella tertiolecta and suspensions of three different sizes of plastic beads with fluorescence labelling. There was no significant difference in clearance rates on 6 and 20 μm plastic beads. Clearance rates on 1 μm plastic beads were, however, much lower than those on 6 and 20 μm plastic beads. Clearance rates of A. planci larvae on D. tertiolecta (ca. 5 μm ESD) were significantly higher than those on 6 and 20 μm plastic beads. Apart from particle size, this result shows that feeding of A. planci larvae is influenced by other properties of potential food particles. Accepted: 24 May 1996  相似文献

Abstract. Gonad and pyloric caecum indices are widely used indicators of reproductive effort and nutritional condition in asteroids. Current methods of quantification generally require sacrificing multiple animals and the resulting reduction in local sea star density could have an unintended impact on benthic communities. Using the intertidal sea star Pisaster ochraceus, we developed and tested a method for estimating organ indices through the non‐lethal sampling of single arms. Indices estimated via dissections of single arms accurately predicted the values obtained by sacrificing whole animals. In laboratory and field trials, we compared two methods of sampling single arms: (1) arm removal, and (2) organ extraction through an incision (without arm removal). Two years after these treatments, organs had regenerated in the affected arms of most sea stars, but were small relative to those in unmanipulated arms. The extent of organ recovery did not differ between the two treatments, but sea stars in the arm removal group were relocated in the field more frequently than those in the arm incision group. Our results suggest that sampling via the removal of single arms can be an effective, non‐lethal method for estimating gonad and pyloric caecum indices in asteroids.  相似文献

The term autotomy refers to the process by which some species lose limbs or parts of limbs in response to adverse biotic or abiotic conditions, as for example, predation or abnormally high temperatures. The multi-armed sea star Heliaster helianthus is a key predator of the intertidal and the shallow rocky subtidal communities of north-central Chile. Natural populations of this sea star have been found with up to 60% of the individuals showing some degree of autotomy. The present study evaluated the effects of autotomy on feeding rate and growth of juvenile and adult H. helianthus after experimentally induced autotomy of 17% and 33% of their arms, as well as on the energy content of the pyloric caeca and gonads of adults during the reproductive period. Experimental juvenile sea stars were maintained and fed in the laboratory over a period of five months and adult sea stars for one month, Intact individuals were maintained as parallel controls. The results showed that juveniles undergoing 33% autotomy decreased their feeding rates, and as a consequence showed lowered net individual growth. In contrast, adults with 17% and 33% autotomy showed marked reductions in feeding. The results showed that autotomized adults had between five and seven times lower contents of carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins (and thus energetic content) in their pyloric caeca and gonads. The loss of the arms not only decreased the capacity for feeding in sea stars, but also allocated energy away from growth and reproduction into the process of regeneration of arms. This suggests that autotomy reduces the fitness of H. helianthus. Growth was reduced in the juveniles, while adults became limited in their ability to store energy which then limited their reproductive potential. Finally, based on the important effect of autotomy on reducing the feeding capacity of H. helianthus, the role of this sea star as a predator in the environment may be strongly affected.  相似文献

To investigate the biases associated with manta tow surveys of Acanthaster planci, counts obtained by manta-towed observers were compared with counts made on SCUBA swims under a limited range of conditions. Five 10 m wide strip transects on different parts of two reefs and with different densities of A. planci were surveyed. On average, 22.7% of starfish counted on SCUBA searches were counted on manta tows over the same transect (SD=12.0%, n=69). This proportion is termed sightability. As sightability decreases with increasing transect width, we estimate that, on average, less than 5% of the A. planci present are counted on routine manta tows which are conducted over transect of undefined width. Multiple regression analysis was used to determine which of 33 variables explained most of the variation in sightability in 10 m wide transects. The most influential variables were the proportion of cryptic starfish and an index of the degree of reef complexity. A regression equation designed to improve estimates of the abundance of A. planci on routine manta tows was developed. However, as it explained only 39% of the variation in sightability, this equation is of limited value in stabilising the negative bias associated with manta tow counts. In view of the variability of this bias, the manta tow technique is not suitable for estimating absolute densities of A. planci. Manta tow surveys are appropriate for identifying gross relative differences between densities of A. planci, and thus for determining broad-scale patterns of abundance. As such, they are a cost-effective method of estimating the geographical extent of A. planci outbreaks.  相似文献

The organization of echinoderm Hox clusters is of interest due to the role that Hox genes play in deuterostome development and body plan organization, and the unique gene order of the Hox complex in the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus purpuratus, which has been linked to the unique development of the axial region. Here, it has been reported that the Hox and ParaHox clusters of Acanthaster planci, a corallivorous starfish found in the Pacific and Indian oceans, generally resembles the chordate and hemichordate clusters. The A. planci Hox cluster shared with sea urchins the loss of one of the medial Hox genes, even‐skipped (Evx) at the anterior of the cluster, as well as organization of the posterior Hox genes. genesis 52:952–958, 2014. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

We ran field experiments to examine the responses of the black sea urchin Tetrapygus niger to predatory sea stars. Trials involving simulated attacks (one or several arms of a sea star being placed on top of half the urchin) showed that the urchin differentiated between the predatory sea stars, Heliaster helianthus and Meyenaster gelatinosus, and a non-predatory sea star, Stichaster striatus, and showed almost no response to a sea star mimic. We further compared the responses of the urchin to different threat levels presented by the two predatory sea stars. The highest threat level was a simulated attack, then mere contact, and subsequently sea stars being placed at different distances from the urchin. All urchins responded to simulated attacks and contact with both sea stars. The proportion responding decreased with distance and more rapidly in trials with H. helianthus (0% at a distance of 30 cm) than with M. gelatinosus (33% at a distance of 50 cm). At each of the threat levels where there was a response to both sea stars, the urchins responded more rapidly to M. gelatinosus than to H. helianthus. In a third experiment where a predatory sea star was added to a circular area (1-m diameter) in which either 4-8 or 11-19 undisturbed urchins were present, the urchins fled the area more rapidly when the added sea star was M. gelatinosus, but the rate of fleeing did not vary with density, as might occur if there was communication among urchins using alarm signals. Our observations suggest that M. gelatinosus presents a stronger predatory threat than H. helianthus. This corresponds to field observations showing that the urchins are more frequently consumed by M. gelatinosus. These are the first field experiments demonstrating distance chemodetection by a marine invertebrate under back-and-forth water flow from wave activity.  相似文献

We report the first observations of a linear growth pattern in aboral spine ossicles of adult Acanthaster planci (L.). This is unlike the spine development of other echinoderms. Growth in aboral spine ossicles of A. planci is essentially by addition of stereom at the base and the spine's growth history is preserved along its length. There are numerous growth lines perpendicular to the long axis of the ossicle. These are clearly evident in longitudinal spine sections and apparently caused by frequent growth episodes. There are periodic pigment bands which are parallel to the growth lines and evident on the surface of the ossicle. Basal growth of the spine ossicle and the nature of the growth lines were confirmed by tetracycline staining. Size/frequency analyses of a population of A. planci from Davies Reef (GBR) found spine ossicle growth, but not body diameter growth, over the six month period between sampling dates. The additional pigment banding in spine ossicles of 4 individuals recaptured after 6 months suggests that pigment bands are laid down seasonally. If pigment band cyclicity is validated, it offers a simple method for ageing adults of A. planci in field populations.  相似文献

Abstract

The role of surface topography as a defence against fouling in tropical sea stars was investigated. The sea stars Linckia laevigata, Fromia indica, Cryptasterina pentagona and Archaster typicus are not fouled and have paxillae (modified ossicles with a median vertical pillar) on their aboral surfaces, which varied in diameter, height and distance depending on species and position on the aboral surface, providing unique and complex surface microtopographies for each species. The surfaces of the sea stars L. laevigata, F. indica and A. typicus were moderately wettable, with their mean seawater contact angles, calculated from captive bubble measurements, being 60.1°, 70.3° and 57.3°, respectively. The seawater contact angle of C. pentagona could not be measured. To evaluate the effectiveness of the surface microtopographies in deterring the settlement of fouling organisms, field experiments with resin replicas of the four sea star species were conducted at three sites around Townsville, Australia, for 8 weeks during the dry and wet seasons. The fouling community and total fouling cover did not differ significantly between replicas of L. laevigata, F. indica, C. pentagona, A. typicus and control surfaces at any site during the dry season. Significant differences between fouling communities on the replicas of the sea stars and control surfaces were detected at two sites during the wet season. However, these differences were transitory, and the total fouling cover did not differ significantly between replicas of sea stars and control surfaces at two of the three sites. In contrast to recent literature on the effects of biofouling control by natural surfaces in the marine environment, the surface microtopographies of tropical sea stars alone were not effective in deterring the settlement and growth of fouling organisms.  相似文献

The crown-of thorns starfish, Acanthaster planci, has been blamed for coral mortality in a large number of coral reef systems in the Indo-Pacific region. Because population outbreaks of A. planci are closely related to reproduction, it is important to examine the mechanism of reproductive control in this starfish. Previously, a relaxin-like gonad-stimulating peptide (RGP) in starfish Asterina pectinifera has been identified as the gonadotropin responsible for final gamete maturation. On the basis of homology research on RGP cDNAs from several species, this study was carried out to identify gonadotropin in A. planci. The cDNA sequence of RGP was determined using a RACE product of mRNA from the radial nerves of A. planci. The coding DNA sequence consisted of 351 base pairs with an open reading frame encoding a peptide of 116 amino acids (aa), including a signal peptide (29 aa), B-chain (19 aa), C-peptide (44 aa), and A-chain (24 aa). The chemical structure of A. planci RGP was exactly the same as that of A. pectinifera RGP. Furthermore, synthetic RGP could induce gamete spawning and oocyte maturation in the ovarian fragments of A. planci. This strongly suggested that the RGP is a gonadotropin in A. planci.  相似文献

The sea stars Granaster nutrix and Neosmilaster georgianus are conspicuous members of benthic communities along the Antarctic Peninsula. An analysis of the proximate composition of somatic body components of nonreproductive adults indicates the nutrient storage organs (pyloric caeca) are rich in both protein (60.7 and 60.6% mean dry wt, respectively) and lipid (25.4 and 29.8% mean dry wt, respectively). Body-wall tissues, while containing small inconspicuous skeletal ossicles, are also comprised of significant levels of organic matter (33.5 and 55.7% mean dry wt, respectively), attributable primarily to protein. Both the pyloric caeca and body-wall tissues are relatively rich in energy (mean energy levels=24.8 and 26.5 kJ g−1 dry wt; 8.4 and 14.1 kJ g−1 dry wt, respectively). Despite the availability of these nutrients and energy neither sea star is preyed upon by the sympatric omnivorous sea star Odontaster validus, a common predator of other Antarctic sea stars. Laboratory feeding bioassays indicate that O. validus rejects live intact individuals and body-wall tissues of both sea star species while readily consuming dried krill. Alginate food pellets containing a krill powder and tissue level concentrations of organic methanol extracts of body-wall tissues were also rejected by O. validus. Moreover, the copious mucus released from the body wall of N. georgianus was deterrent in O. validus food pellet bioassays. Thus, both sea stars evidently possess defensive secondary metabolites that defend against predation and are likely to play a role in mediating materials and energy transfer in the Antarctic benthos.  相似文献
