Standardized lateral cephalograms of eleven skulls with artificial cranial deformations from Eastern Europe and twenty normal skulls from the same population were made, digitized and imported into the AutoCAD 2005 computer program. The x- and y-coordinates of defined measuring points were determined and angle measurements were made. The form difference of the skulls was tested with the Euclidean Distance Matrix Analysis (EDMA) and the difference of the angle measurements were compared statistically using the non-parametric Mann-Whitney test. All deformed skulls belonged to the tabular fronto-occipital type of deformation. The results of the EDMA and the angle measurements indicated significant differences for the neurocranium and the facial cranium in height between the normal and the deformed skulls, but not in the cranial length. It can be concluded that in Eastern Europe one method of cranial molding was used. The deformation of the neurocranium also affected the development of the facial cranium regarding facial height. This may indicate a dependency of the developmental fields of the neurocranium and facial cranium.  相似文献

In this study we estimate sex and population affinity of Gravettian Predmostí (P) skulls using linear and geometric discriminant analysis (DA), and compare them with results of 2D geometric morphometrics (GM). We used the measurements of P3 and P9 males, P4 and P10 females, as originally estimated by Matiegka (1934), as well as two databases--the recent skull database of Howells and the fossil data of Henke. DA classifies the P skulls as robust and belonging to the "male" region, loosing the sensitivity of inter-population differences influenced by size factor. That is why this approach could not be applied. The geographic inter-population differences according to DA do not define P skull shapes as extreme. The influence of geographic variability could be stronger than the inter-sexual differences. Despite the chronological differences between databases and Gravettian skulls, these differences are a component of regional inter-population variability. According to our results, GM is more successful methodological approach than DA. Our previous sex estimation of P skulls with help of GM is completely in accordance with the classical morphoscopic estimation. However, an appropriate reference database is necessary in both the GM and DA approaches. For the sexing of skull with unknown population affinity, and with absence of appropriate reference database, we suggest to use the application of more subjective visual scoring methods.  相似文献

Seven different measurements of fox skulls from animals of known sex were recorded for 571 fox skulls from Wales and South-East England. A multivariate technique, discriminant function analysis, is used to classify the skulls according to sex and regional origin. Differences detected suggest that male skulls tend to be larger, and that skulls from Wales are larger than those from South-East England. The classifications are presumed to reflect true differences between sexes and regions.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate secular trends by means of orthodontic measurements on lateral cephalograms. We use roentgenograms from three populations: 22 Bronze Age skulls from a cemetery near Hainburg/Austria, 140 soldiers who served in the Hapsburg Imperial Army in the late 19th century, and 154 contemporary recruits of the Austrian Federal Army. Using conventional morphometric analysis, no statistically significant differences could be established. But applying geometric morphometrics to the 2D-coordinates of the pentagon composed of the landmarks Sella, Nasion, Articulare, Gonion and Menton, some biologically interpretable differences were detected, the size allometry between the 19th- and 20th-century populations being the only notable one. We conclude that landmarks should be digitized directly (and many more of them) and that conventional methods used in clinical orthodontics are inappropriate for addressing the scientific questions approached here.  相似文献

Mechanical loading of muscles on bones at their sites of attachment can regulate skeletal morphology. The present study examined the effects of muscle degeneration on craniofacial growth, using two strains of muscular dystrophic mice, Mus musculus, differing in pathological severity. We collected radiographic and weight data longitudinally and digitized radiographs to obtain distances between anatomical landmarks in different functional regions of the skull. We then quantified heterochronic and allometric differences among genotypes and between sexes. Because growth is nonlinear with respect to time, we first used the Gompertz model to obtain heterochronic growth parameters, which were then tested with ANOVA. Ontogenetic allometric analyses examined the scaling relationships between various measurements with linear regressions. For most measurements the severely dystrophic mice are significantly smaller in final size than both the control and the mildly dystrophic mice, which are statistically indistinguishable. Measures of total growth and the neurocranium exhibit more differences among groups in heterochronic parameters of early ontogeny because growth in these regions is controlled primarily by brain expansion that ceases early in development. In contrast, the face and mandible exhibit more differences in later growth parameters possibly because of the increased influence of muscles on these regions as growth progresses. The severely dystrophic mice have flatter, more elongate skulls and mandibles than those of the other two genotypes, concurrent with an absence of muscular forces to stimulate growth in a superior-inferior direction. The chance discovery of a paper by Rottstock et al. (1983) comparing the individual diameters of 4,497 teeth from 711 skulls from anthropologically-different populations (Europeans, Negroids, Mongoloids, Melanesians) provided the impetus to add our measurements of 449 teeth from 89 Polynesians (mainland Maoris, Chatham Island, Wairau Bar) to the series. We confirm that dental measurements provide clear differences among the different population groups. We confirm that dental indices are useful by disclosing specific dental relationships among the different population groups.  相似文献

A recently introduced three-dimensional computerized system with landmark representation of the soft-tissue facial surface allows noninvasive and fast quantitative study of facial growth. The aims of the present investigation were (1) to quantify growth changes in soft-tissue facial morphology, (2) to evaluate sex differences in growth patterns, and (3) to provide reference data for selected angular and linear measurements that could be of interest for the objective analysis of maxillofacial surgery or orthodontic patients. The three-dimensional coordinates of 22 standardized facial landmarks were automatically collected by automated infrared photogrammetry using the three-dimensional facial morphometry method in a mixed longitudinal and cross-sectional study, in which 2023 examinations were obtained in 1348 healthy nonpatient subjects between 6 years of age and young adulthood. Selected parameters (angles, linear distances, and ratios) were calculated and averaged for age and sex. Male values were compared with female values by means of Student's t test. Within each age group, linear distances were significantly larger in boys than in girls (p < 0.05) with some exceptions coinciding with the earlier female growth spurt, whereas angular measurements did not show a corresponding sexual dimorphism. Linear distances in girls had almost reached adult dimensions in the 12-to-13-year-old age group, whereas in boys a large increase was still to occur. This was most evident in the middle third of the face, where both sexes showed almost the same dimension and amount of growth up to the age of 13, with significant differences afterward, boys being larger than girls. On the contrary, in the lower third of the face, significant differences occurred throughout the whole investigated period, boys being always larger than girls. The male versus female angular comparison reflected the differential timing in attainment of adult proportions. The three-dimensional facial morphometry method allowed the noninvasive evaluation of a large sample of nonpatient subjects, leading to the definition of three-dimensional normative data about facial soft tissues. The method could supplement more invasive radiographic evaluations, allowing frequent examinations of children and adolescents before and during treatment, as well as in the follow-up.  相似文献

关于动物头骨形态方面的研究报道曾受到了较多的关注(Cesani et al., 2003).头骨形态是动物形态特征的一个重要方面,受遗传和环境因素的共同影响,存在着种间、性别和地理差异(张焱等,1999).头骨的形态特征不仅是动物生理上的一个基本解剖指标,同时也是动物分类(李晓晨和王廷正,1992)和年龄鉴定(张洁,1989)的重要依据,是动物生态研究的重要指标.对头骨形态的研究,不仅对动物的种间、种内关系(Yom et al.,1999)和生态特征(Barlow et al.,1997)等方面的研究具有重要的参考价值,在动物的地理演化、发育生物学以及进化生态学的研究中也具有十分重要的意义.  相似文献

Two populations of roe deer from Spain, approximately 300 km apart from each other and currently recognized as separate subspecies. were studied to analyse the nature of the morphological differences between these populations and to assess the validity of its taxonomic division. Sixty-one skulls of roc deer from the Occidental Cantabric Mountains (OCM) and 17 from the Northern lberic Mountains (NIM) were used. No significant sexual dimorphism allowed pooling of male and female samples, on which a large set of 53 measurements was taken. Skulls from the OCM population are, on average, 1·9% larger than those from the NIM population. Twenty-five out of the 53 characters showed some degree of significant differences between means of both populations, though only four showed highly significant differences. Mandible characters were the most variable traits, showing also significant differences between populations. Eight principal factors were extracted. explaining a total of 84·7% of the sample variance. An ANOVA of factor scores from each population revealed significant differences in PF 1 and PF 3. Interpretation of these two factors suggests that morphological differences between both populations can be summarized as specimens from OCM having larger mandibles and broader neurocranium than specimens from NIM. Mandible differences might reflect morphological adaptations to favour the consumption of ligneous plants, which are more frequently eaten by the OCM roe deer population, whereas a broader neurocranium might be related to antler size. It is concluded that biometric differences observed in skulls from these two populations only reflect minor morphological adaptations to different habitats, thus. there is a lack of morphological data to support the taxonomic distinction of the OCM population as a separate subspecies.  相似文献

Seven different cranial measurements of foxes of known sex were recorded. Univariate and multivariate techniques were used to study the geographical variability of the skulls. A clear multivariate separation of skulls from six counties in Wales is demonstrated, which is correlated with certain geographic features of the areas from which the skulls were obtained.  相似文献

Previous cephalometric studies of occlusofacial angular and metric data show small variability within and between population samples of Caucasian children and adults. Comparable results were obtained by use of standardized X-ray cephalometry and direct craniometric measurements of skulls of mature specimens of Alouatta caraya and Cebus capucinus. These data measure facial and occlusofacial form and form relationships. Identical measuring techniques are applied to compare data derived from headplates of 19 young adult American Caucasians and 19 articulated Hindu skulls of mature individuals. The data are expanded to include measurements that relate symphyseal form to occlusal and nasomaxillary structure. The facial plane and an "internal" facial plane (nasion to a point tangential to the superior genial tubercles) straddle the mandibular symphysis. The angles they form at nasion and at their intersections with the maxillary occlusal plane were derived and statistically analyzed. The occlusal plane intersect angles show small absolute variability and are not significantly different (P greater than .05) in the two groups. The nasion plane angles are significantly different (P less than .025), reflecting sample differences in facial height. Linear measurements confirm a considerably larger dentoalveolar prognathism in the Hindu group. Data derived from the geometrically averaged tracings of Bjork, Broadbent, Sassouni, and Solow provide further evidence of occlusofacial form commonality. These shared phyletically conservative traits are evidence of highly integrated morphological adaptations for the attainment, maintenance, and functioning of the species-wide pattern of precisely fitting complementary crowns and crown parts that constitute the dental occlusion.  相似文献

Knowledge of geographic variation is important to questions of population assessment and management. Fraser's dolphins have been exploited in two regions in the western Pacific. Analysis of 137 skulls from the Philippines, Japan, Taiwan, Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Africa, France, the U.S., St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and the eastern tropical Pacific revealed sexual dimorphism in 5 of 26 measurements (difference of 1.9%-5.8% between males and females), similar to levels of cranial dimorphism in other small pelagic delphinids. Males had a larger braincase and temporal fossae and smaller external nares than females. Sexually dimorphic characters were excluded, and male and females samples were pooled to examine geographic differences in the remaining characters. Multivariate analyses yielded significant differences between the Philippine and Japanese series within the North Pacific and between a pooled North Pacific series and a North Atlantic series. The Japanese skulls were on average broader and had a wider rostrum, larger orbit, larger internal nares, and longer braincase than the Philippine skulls. These differences suggest that Fraser's dolphins exploited in Japanese and Philippine waters in directed fisheries or as by catch belong to different populations and should be assessed and managed separately.  相似文献

304 skulls of Cape hare (Lepus capensis) were collected from two climatically distinct localities in northern China. With eye lens weight as a continuous age variable, postnatal growth patterns of 25 cranial linear measurements in relation to sex, growth season and region were analysed to understand the morphological basis of life history adaptation. In almost all the skull measurements, no significant differences were found between either sex or growth seasons. Principal component analysis revealed that facial elements accounted for the greatest proportion of skull morphological variation. Von Bertalanffy function was applied to describe growth trajectories of the skull elements. Based on this model, the growth rates of skull elements and the age at which they reached a certain proportion (95%) of asymptotes were compared. The results showed that skull growth exhibited an allometric pattern, with neural components attaining their final size more rapidly (at about 2–3 months old in tympanic bulla and 4–6 months old in others) than did the facial, which continued to grow well into postnatal life (at 6–10 months old). The earlier establishment of neurocranial morphology was associated with a fully developed central nervous system, which may play a key role in improving the survival of animals during the early phase of life. There was a regional difference in developmental rate of the hare skull. For all the skull parameters, northern hares had a more rapid rate of cranial growth compared to the southern, i.e. skull elements of juveniles from northern population were relatively larger at comparable ages and achieved adult size 0.5–4.0 months earlier than those from the south. In adult hares, however, no significant regional differences in any of the skull parameters were present. Adaptive explanations for the regional difference in ontogenetic pattern of skull morphology include age‐specific thermoregulation constraint, season‐related food availability and age‐dependent predation pressure. Based on the findings of this study, it is suggested that the postnatal growing period represents a crucial time of life, and that improvement of survivorship when young by growth adaptation forms an important aspect of the hare's life history strategies. © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2003, 78 , 343–353.  相似文献

Recently, the improvement of methods for shape analysis has revolutionized the field of morphometrics. While three‐dimensional (3D) imaging technology is increasingly available, many studies of 3D structures still use two‐dimensional (2D) data, even when this may result in the loss of important information. This is particularly conspicuous in the study of small mammals, as devices precise enough for 3D digitization of small objects are the most expensive. Thus, the development of low‐cost methods aimed to recover 3D shape from small mammals would be of wide interest. Photogrammetry allows for obtaining 3D data with a lower cost than other 3D techniques, but it has not been previously applied to the study of small mammals. Accordingly, here we test the suitability of photogrammetric techniques to obtain 3D landmarks on mouse skulls as a model for small mammals. Shape and size of 3D models obtained with photogrammetric techniques were consistent among replicates, even when different sets of photographs were used. The linear measurements obtained from 3D models produced here were highly correlated with measurements obtained with callipers on actual crania, and differences among both sets of measures were smaller than those among individuals in most of the tested measures. These results show for the first time that photogrammetry is a precise technique for 3D shape analysis of small mammals. Photogrammetry also proved to be accurate for obtaining linear measurements between 3D landmarks; however, further studies are needed to demonstrate that this technique is also accurate to recreate 3D shapes.  相似文献

Like in most European countries, the population of the European beaver (Castor fiber) in Slovakia became extinct in the nineteenth century. Thanks to reintroduction of beavers in neighboring states, after a long break the beaver returns also to the territory of Slovakia. This has particularly affected the present distribution of beavers in the Slovak Republic. The first aim of the work was to find phylogenetic similarities of the northeastern Slovak population with the Ukrainian and Polish ones comparing their adult skulls and mandibles on the basis of craniometric measurements. A total of 28 measurements were taken on each skull and mandible. The statistical evaluation showed that the most similar were the Slovak and Ukrainian skulls, while in 8 cranial parameters the Ukrainian and Polish populations were found to be significantly different. The second aim was related to their ability to fell trees. The enamel thickness of incisors in the jaw and mandible were compared within the Slovak sample by measuring for 18 teeth, which were previously scanned by the X-Ray Computer Tomography. The results showed that the average thickness of incisors enamel in the mandible was 0.34 mm, while the incisors of the maxilla had enamel approximately 0.29 mm thick.  相似文献

基于三维激光扫描的颅骨测量方法具有无接触、成像快速、易便携操作等优势,近年来在体质人类学与古人类学等领域发挥着日趋重要的作用。而在该测量技术普及的同时,其可靠性以及与手工测量的一致性问题也受到关注。本研究分别以手工方法与激光扫描建立模型法对考古出土颅骨进行测量,期望以实验手段探讨两种测量结果是否一致。实验结果显示,上述两种测量方法分别标定的两套测点相互之间吻合情况较好。其中,有易识别解剖学形态特征的测点吻合程度最优。而在两种测量手段的标点操作方式有所不同时,其标点位置间距会略有放大。从最终测量结果来看,两种测量手段所获数据的绝对差值和相对差异程度均较小。个别测量项在配对样本t检验中表现出了差异显著性,这应由两种测量结果大小差异的统一偏向性所致。在实际操作中,此类差异仍在可接受范围内,适宜混合同时使用。就差异的来源而言,测量操作方式的不同以及测点间的吻合程度是导致最终测量结果不同的主要原因之一,而仪器、颅骨表面的激光反射特性、扫描所获三维画面拼合情况等主客观因素也同样不可忽视。  相似文献

Abstract

Purpose: Our study aimed to determine the possible differences in linear measurements and linear indices values of intracranial fluid spaces (IFS) between right- and left-handed adults.

Methods: This work has been carried out on 148 subjects (72 men and 76 women). In the study, 88 right-handers and 60 left-handers were included. Forty of the right-handers were male, 48 were female, and 32 of the left-handers were male, and 28 were female. The ages were between 20 and 50?years. Linear measurements were obtained based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies. A 1.5-T MRI scanner was used to obtain axial images. The ten parameters were estimated from MRI scans.

Results: There was no correlation between parameters and age. In our study, interestingly, as can be seen from the tables, most of the parameters with statistically significant differences were higher in favour of left-handed subjects. In most of the linear measurement results, IFS values of the right hemisphere in right-handers, and the left hemisphere in left-handers were higher. Similar results were found in favour of the left-handed in most of the linear ventricular indices.

Conclusion: Linear measurements and linear indices values of IFS were mostly higher in left-handers than in right-handed individuals.  相似文献

Endocranial volume (EV) estimation is widely used in physical anthropology for assessing brain size differences between taxa and monitoring the emergence of brain growth patterns in modern humans. However, to date, no reference data are available for modern human EV ontogeny. We measured 94 skulls with known sex and age (ranging from 0 to 7.5 years) from the osteological collection of Strasbourg University (OCSU) by using an accurate digital active contour model algorithm on 3D virtual models, reconstructed by CT. The OCSU data also allow us to propose improved equations for estimating EV in immature individuals from dry skull diameters (length, width, and height). Aside from the EV, the average proportional endocranial volume (PEV), corresponding to the ratio of EV at a given age to the average EV in the corresponding adult population, was also computed. EV nearly doubles during the first year of life, and later continues to expand more slowly, at least until 7 years of age. No sex differences can be demonstrated between the EV distributions of boys and girls in this sample. However, although PEV at birth is identical in girls and boys, it later displays significantly higher values in the girls of our series. PEV obtained at birth is 22%, which is quite different from values established for the brain itself from autopsied individuals, or MRI data. This suggests that assessments of EV and PEV values in fossil specimens should be conducted by using identical measures in comparative samples of extant humans and apes.  相似文献
