Enzyme polymorphism was characterized among the proteins of 14 loci of Coliae meadii by replicate electrophoresis in polyacrylamide gels of differing pore size. The results reveal a large number of variants, with a very skewed frequency distribution. A large fraction of the variants cannot be differentiated by electrophoresis in 5–7% acrylamide gels. This gel sieving approach permits an estimate of the relative contributions of charge and of conformation to electrophoretic mobility. Many of the variant proteins do not differ in charge. Most variants exhibit different degrees of interaction with the gel and presumably differ in conformation. This work was supported by grants from Washington University, the American Philosophical Society, the National Institutes of Health, and the National Science Foundation. Relative availability of nitrogen in host plants of invertebrate herbivores: three possible nutritional and physiological definitions
Stephen D. Cockfield 《Oecologia》1988,77(1):91-94
Summary It has been postulated that free amino acids in the diet of herbivores are a more readily available source of nitrogen than are amino acids in intact proteins. When plants are subjected to any of a number of stress factors the concentration of free amino acids in their tissues may increase relative to the protein content. It has been further postulated that such changes in available nitrogen can increase the survivorship of very young herbivores feeding on the tissues of stressed plants. In this paper, the concept of readily available nitrogen is given more specific definitions in the effort to uncover an underlying nutritional or physiological mechanism responsible for such changes in larval survivorship. The first hypothesis considered is that amino acids are more readily available than proteins in the sense that, as they occur in plant tissue, they are a more nutritious source of needed nitrogenous compounds. The second hypothesis considered is that amino acids are absorbed into the insect gut free from interference by proteinase inhibitors, and thus are more chemically available than are proteins. Finally, free amino acids, because of their solubility and greater mobility, may be more available to herbivores because of physical factors restricting the movement and digestion of proteins from plant tissue into the insect gut. The applicability of each hypothesis to certain types of insects feeding on particular plant tissues is discussed. The investigation reported in this paper (No. 86-7-224) is in connection with a project of the Kentucky Agricultural Experiment Station and is published with the approval of the Director

The feeding responses of newly hatched larvae of Papilio demoleus on the diet with preservatives were as high as on the diet without preservatives though less than those on the host lime leaves. However, when the larvae were reared upto the 5th instar on the host lime leaves or the diet with or without preservatives, their feeding responses towards host lime leaves and the diet without preservatives were equally high. The diet with preservatives reared larvae showed 100% response when tested on the same diet. But their response towards diet with preservatives declined to 80% when the larvae were reared on the diet without preservatives and to 10% when they were reared on the host lime leaves. The larvae seem to have an aversion against the preservatives if reared in their absence which was enhanced by their experience of feeding on the host leaves during their ontogeny.

Summary Nitrogen and phosphorus flow in litterfall and throughfall were studied in two California Quercus species (the evergreen Q. agrifolia and deciduous Q. lobata) before, during, and after an outbreak of the California oak moth, Phryganidia californica. All of the foliage of both oak species was removed by the herbivore during the course of this outbreak. During the outbreak, total N and P flow to the ground more than doubled from Q. agrifolia and increased to a lesser extent from Q. lobata over the previous year. The composition of the litter during the outbreak year shifted so that in Q. agrifolia, almost 70% of the total N and P flow to the ground moved through frass and insect remains, while in Q. lobata, approximately 60% of the N and 40% of the P moved through frass and insect remains. Short-term leaching experiments showed that nitrogen was far more rapidly lost from Phryganidia frass than from leaf litter of either species. These results and the relative frequency of Phryganidia outbreaks suggest that this herbivore has significant effects on the nutrient cycling beneath these trees.

A study ofper os inoculated larvae was undertaken to determine if the entomopathogenic fungus,Beauveria bassiana, is able to infect the Colorado potato beetle,Leptinotarsa decemlineata, via the alimentary tract. Surface orper os inoculated larvae which were immediately surface sterilized post inoculation did not succumb to infection, whereas those larvae not sterilized became infected. Histological studies of fed or starved, agnotobiotic (with microbial flora) and axenic larvae revealed that conidia can germinate in the gut regardless of the presence of gut microflora. However, infection via the alimentary tract was never observed in fed larvae and only noted in a single starved individual. It is concluded that infections ofper os inoclated larvae occurred after surface contamination of the integument by viable conidia contained in the frass. The rate of food passage through the gut is probably important in preventingper os infections.

Summary The Highlands County, Florida populations of the eastern tiger swallowtail butterfly, Papilio glaucus L., represent a putative subspecies, P. g. australis Maynard. The only foodplant ever reported in southern half of Florida is sweetbay, Magnolia virginiana L. (Magnoliaceae). In fact, there are apparently no other reported foodplants for the polyphagous tiger swallowtail species which exist in southern Florida. These ecologically monophagous P. g. australis populations were studied in order to determine whether or not significant behavioral and biochemical adaptations in the larvae are detectable as a result of the ecological specialization on sweetbay. These results suggest an emphatic yes. On sweetbay, neonate larval survival of these Florida populations is the best of any other population tested from across North America. In addition, penultimate instar larval growth rates are significantly faster on sweet bay than any other foodplant tested. Furthermore, these biochemical adaptations to sweetbay by P. g. australis in Florida are accompanied by a significantly poorer neonate survival and growth performance on northern foodplants (most notably the Salicaceae and Betulaceae). Reciprocal inabilities of the northern subspecies, P. g. canadensis, and the western P. rutulus to utilize sweetbay are described, as well as the reciprocal inabilities of two congeneric and sympatric (Florida) species, Papilio palamedes and Papilio troilus, that have specialized on another bay (redbay, Persea borbonia; of the Lauraceae). It remains uncertain to what degree such apparent negative genetic correlations in foodplant adaptations represent a driving force in the formation of host races or species, especially since so little is known about oviposition preferences of Papilio glaucus across North America. In Florida we have an apparently strict ecological monophagy coupled with a degree of reproductive isolation that has resulted in its tentative classification as a subspecies, P. g. australis. The role of foodplants in the speciation process can be significant even for P. glaucus, the most polyphagous of all 563 species of world Papilionidae. It remains uncertain whether the significant differences in detoxication and biochemical processing abilities observed in this study were evolved in parapatry or allopatry. Disjunct populations of P. alexiares in Mexico retain some ability to detoxify sweetbay, as do some individuals in most P. glaucus glaucus populations tested from ten different states north of Florida.

A case of local feeding specialization in the European badger (Meles meles), a carnivore species with morphological, physiological and behavioural traits proper to a trophic generalist, is described. For the first time, we report a mammalian species, the European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus), as the preferred prey of badgers. Secondary prey are consumed according to their availability, compensating for temporal fluctuations in the abundance of rabbit kittens. We discuss how both predator (little ability to hunt) and prey (profitability and predictability) features, may favour the observed specialization, as predicted by foraging theory. Badgers show a trend to specialize on different prey in different areas throughout the species range. It is suggested that changes in prey features can reverse the badger feeding strategy at the population level. Such dynamic behavioural responses make difficult to label badgers as generalists or specialists at the species level.

We used Drosophila melanogaster larvae with different alleles at the foraging (for) locus in a variety of behavioral tests to evaluate normal muscle usage of rover and sitter phenotypes. The results show that sitter and lethal sitter alleles of for do not affect larval behavior through a mutation which affects larval muscle usage. In general the behavior of rovers and sitters differed on food but not on non-nutritive substrates. Rovers and sitters moved equally well on non-nutritive substrates, and measures such as the time to roll over and length of forward stride showed no significant strain differences. Larvae with different alleles at for did not differ in body length. Rovers took more strides, not longer ones, than sitters while on foraging substrates. We conclude that differences in larval locomotion during foraging found in larvae with different alleles at for can not be explained on the basis of muscle usage alone. It is more likely that for affects larval ability to perceive or respond to the foraging environment.

Fourth instar gypsy moth larvae, Lymantria dispar, from a laboratory colony were transferred between artificial diet and three ages of leaves from a preferred tree, Quercus rubra. Mortality after transfers was generally minimal (<13.3%) and did not differ from mortality of larvae remaining on the same food. Larvae that were transferred to a new food accepted artificial diet and the early season foliage that is normally eaten by early instars as readily as larvae that were not transferred. Pupal weights from larvae continually fed artificial diet or transferred from artificial diet to early season foliage were not significantly different. For trials beginning during June and later, 12-day weight gain and pupal weight were greater for individuals transferred to or reared continually on artificial diet than for individuals transferred to or reared continually on mature foliage.First instars of wild larvae fed artificial diet gained less weight after 3 weeks than foliage-fed first instars. Pupal weights of wild larvae transferred from June foliage to artificial diet as fourth instars were not significantly different from pupal weights of wild larvae remaining on foliage. Thus, the response of laboratory colony larvae to artificial diet was superior to that of wild larvae.

Summary Herbivory can alter the balance between sources and sinks within a plant, and changes in the source-sink ratio often lead to changes in plant photosynthetic rates. We investigated how feeding by three insect herbivores affected photosynthetic rates and growth of goldenrod (Solidago altissima). One, a phloem-sap feeding aphid (Uroleucon caligatum), creates an additional sink, and the other two, a leaf-chewing beetle (Trirhabda sp.) and a xylem-sap feeding spittlebug (Philaenus spumarius) both reduce source supply by decreasing leaf area. Plants were grown outside in large pots and insects were placed on them at predetermined densities, with undamaged plants included as controls. All insects were removed after a 12-day feeding period. We measured photosynthetic rates both of damaged leaves and of undamaged leaves that were produced after insect removal. Photosynthetic rates per unit area of damaged leaves were reduced by spittlebug feeding, but not by beetle or aphid feeding. Conductance of spittlebugdamaged leaves did not differ from controls, but internal carbon dioxide concentrations were increased. These results indicate that spittlebug feeding does not cause stomatal closure, but impairs fixation within the leaf. Effects of spittlebug feeding on photosynthetic rates persisted after the insects were removed from the plants. Photosynthetic rates per unit area of leaves produced after insect removal on spittlegug-damaged plants were lower than control levels, even though the measurements were taken 12 days after insect removal. The measurement leaf on spittlebugdamaged plants was reduced in area by 27% relative to the controls, but specific leaf area (leaf area/leaf weight) was increased by 18%. Because of the shift in specific leaf area, photosynthetic rates were also examined per unit leaf weight, and when this was done there were no significant differences between control and spittlebug-damaged plants. Beetle and aphid feeding had no effects on the photosynthetic rate of the leaves produced after insect removal. Plant relative growth rates (in terms of height) were reduced by spittlebugs during the period that the insects were feeding on the plants. Relative growth rates of spittlebug-damaged plants were increased above control levels after insect removal, but these plants were still shorter than controls 17 days after insect removal. Beetles and aphids did not affect plant relative growth rates or plant height. Feeding by both spittlebugs and beetles reduced leaf area, and the effect of the spittlebug was more severe than that of the beetle. These results show that effects of herbivory on photosynthetic rates cannot be predicted simply by considering changes in the source-sink ratio, and that spittlebug feeding is more damaging to the host plant than beetle or aphid feeding.

First instar Heliothis zea larvae tended to feed on the leaves of snap beans, but later instars preferred to burrow in the pods. Fifth instars offered only leaves grew poorly because they ate them in small quantities, presumably because of deterrency. The utilization efficiency and growth of fifth instars fed pulp was slightly but significantly inferior to that of seed-fed larvae but was greatly superior to that of leaf-fed larvae. Since the dry matter content of pulp is less than one-third that of seeds, larvae allowed to eat only pulp had abnormally large fresh weight intakes and devoted about three times as much time to feeding as did seed-fed larvae. Larvae offered a mix of seeds and pulp ate both and had a total fresh weight food intake somewhat greater than that of seed-fed larvae but much less than that of pulp-fed larvae. Eating both seeds and pulp offers no obvious nutritional advantage but presumably offers a significant ecological advantage. It is argued that the number of foraging trip a larva must make to discover pods is minimized by feeding on a mix, thus reducing exposure to mortality factors such as predation.

The toxic effect of a spore preparation of Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis Berliner Serotype H-14 (Bti) on 4th instar larvae of Aedes aegypti L. and Toxorhynchites amboinensis (Doleschall) was observed when given either in a suspension feeding test or when injected orally as a forced feeding or via the anus as an enema. The A. aegypti larvae showed the greater sensitivity to Bti both because they greatly concentrate the toxin by filter feeding and they are more sensitive to Bti than are the larvae of T. amboinensis. The latter appeared approximately two-fold less sensitive to Bti than the former after taking into account their greater body weight.

A microbial biofilm community was established over 971 days within gravel in an aquarium so as to model biofouling of an aquifer.
When the water was allowed to evaporate slowly, white crystalline deposits, containing several carbonate and sulphate minerals
including nesquehonite (MgCO3.3H2O), were seen at the highest points on the surface of the biofouled gravel. No such deposits occurred in regions lacking
biofilms. These crystals appeared to originate from evaporation of dissolved salts which had migrated through the biofilm.
Surfaceadherent microbial biofilms may conceivably provide a conduit for solute transport in porous media such as soils and
aquifers.

The MSC16 cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) mutant with lower activity of mitochondrial Complex I was used to study the influence of mitochondrial metabolism on
whole cell energy and redox state. Mutant plants had lower content of adenylates and NADP(H) whereas the NAD(H) pool was similar
as in wild type. Subcellular compartmentation of adenylates and pyridine nucleotides were studied using the method of rapid
fractionation of protoplasts. The data obtained demonstrate that dysfunction of mitochondrial respiratory chain decreased
the chloroplastic ATP pool. No differences in NAD(H) pools in subcellular fractions of mutated plants were observed; however,
the cytosolic fraction was highly reduced whereas the mitochondrial fraction was more oxidized in MSC16, as compared to WTc.
The NADP(H) pool in MSC16 protoplasts was greatly decreased and the chloroplastic NADP(H) pool was more reduced, whereas the
extrachloroplastic pool was much more oxidized, than in WTc protoplast. Changes in nucleotides distribution in cucumber MSC16
mutant were compared to changes found in tobacco (Nicotiana sylvestris) CMS II mitochondrial mutant. In contrast to MSC16 cucumber, the content of adenylates in tobacco mutant was much higher
than in tobacco wild type. The differences were more pronounced in leaf tissue collected after darkness than in the middle
of the photoperiod. Results obtained after tobacco protoplast fractionating showed that the increase in CMS II adenylate content
was mainly due to a higher level in extrachloroplast fraction. Both mutations have a negative effect on plant growth through
perturbation of chloroplast/mitochondrial interactions.

Suitability ofDrosophila melanogaster larvae to their endoparasiteLeptopilina boulardi (Nordlander, 1980) shows wide genetic and epigenetic variation. Experiments were done onDrosophila isofemale lines. When reared in optimal laboratory conditions only 50 % of parasitizedDrosophila larvae gave rise to an adult wasp, and significant variation was observed between lines. In crowded conditions, this average
value increased up to 90 % and no more significant variability could be detected between lines. Genetic and demographic consequences
of these results are discussed.

Summary Examination of the gut contents of adult Rhingia campestris reveals that there are considerable differences in the relative amounts of pollen and nectar ingested by individual insects. Pollen, a rich protein source, is required most by females, particularly during those stages of ovarial development when yolk deposition occurs. Nectar, which is mainly carbohydrate, is required in large amounts by males, and is also required by females before and after oogenesis. These results are discussed in relation to the likely nutritional needs of the flies, and it is suggested that similar feeding patterns may be found in a variety of other flower visiting insects. Finally, reference is made to the problems of making ecological assumptions about feeding behaviour on the basis of the morphological attributes of the mouthparts.

The hypothesis that cattle browsing on inflorescences of the soaptree Yucca elata reduces reproductive success was investigated by comparing recruitment and population structure in six populations protected from grazing, six grazed during the flowering season and five grazed outside the flowering season. Cattle consumed 98% of inflorescences, which were found to be highly nutritious. Reduced recruitment in flower-grazed populations could not be attributed to reduced flower survival, as recruitment in non-flower grazed populations was also reduced. Changes in population structure were due to cattle browsing small caudices, including both genets and ramets. An alternate hypothesis of limited germination in soils compacted by cattle was not supported. Cattle browsing of inflorescences reduced reproductive effort, which may be due to the inability of the plants to resorb nutrients after flowering. Browsing also increased branching, probably through lack of apical dominance, whereas physical trampling increased procumbency. Cattle browsing implies a lack of genetic recruitment, possible local extinction of the yucca moth Tegeticula yuccasella, the exclusive pollinator of Y. elata, and local reduction in insect and bird biodiversity.

Although the first two instars tend to eat the silks, last instar larvae of the corn earworm, Heliothis zea (Boddie) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), prefer to feed on the kernels rather than on the other components of the maize ear. They feed preferentially on the germ of the kernel, but when offered whole kernels also eat some of the endosperm. Larvae that eat cut portions of the kernels that include all of the germ and some endosperm utilize their food for growth more efficiently than do larvae that eat portions of the kernel that include only endosperm. Adults that ate germ portions or endosperm portions of the kernel as larvae do not differ significantly in longevity, number of days on which they oviposit, number of eggs laid per day or the percentage of the eggs that hatched. We suggest that the larvae use self-selection to increase their intake of germ, thus increasing utilization efficiency and decreasing the amount of food that they must eat. When they feed on plants (other than maize) with small fruits, this probably increases their ability to compete for food when it is scarce and minimizes exposure to predation by decreasing the number of foraging trips and the distance that they must travel in search of food.

Phytochrome of oat (Avena sativa L., cv. Comparison of phytochrome photoversibility measurements to the distribution of the pigment within the cell indicates that the spectral assay is not influenced by the observed compartmentalization of the chromoprotein. However, the observed compartmentalization of phytochrome is correlated with a loss in spectrophotometrically detectable Pr.Abbreviations Pr

We tested the hypothesis that larvae of the pipevine swallowtail butterfly, Battus philenor, employ behavioral and phenotypic plasticity as thermoregulatory strategies. These larvae are phenotypically varied across
their range with predominantly black larvae (southeastern USA and California) and red larvae (western Texas, Arizona) occurring
in different regions. Two years of field observations in south Texas indicate that the proportion of red larvae increases
with increasing daily temperatures as the growing season progresses. Larvae were also observed to shift their microhabitats
by climbing on non-host vegetation and avoided excessive heat in their feeding microhabitat. Larvae of ten half-sib families
from populations in south Texas and California, reared under different temperature regimes in common garden experiments, exhibited
plasticity in larval phenotype, with larvae from both populations producing the red phenotype at temperatures greater than
30°C and maintaining the black phenotype at cooler temperatures. However, larvae from Texas were more tolerant of higher temperatures,
showing no decrease in growth rate in the highest temperature (maximum seasonal temperature) treatment, compared to the California
population. In a field experiment, black larvae were found to have higher body temperatures when exposed to sunlight compared
to red larvae. These results suggest that microhabitat shifts and the color polyphenism observed in pipevine swallowtail larvae
may be the adaptive strategies that enable larvae to avoid critical thermal maximum temperatures.
