The effect of elevated CO2 concentration (CE) on leaf chlorophyll (Chl) and nitrogen (N) contents and photosynthetic rate (PN) was evaluated during the post-flowering stages of rice grown at CE (570 ± 50 μmol mol−1) in open top chamber (OTC), at ambient CO2 concentration (∼ 365 μmol mol−1) in OTC and at open field. Thirty-five day old seedlings were transplanted in OTCs or in field and allowed to grow till maturity. Chl and N contents were highest at the time of flowering and thereafter it started to decline. The rate of decline in Chl and N contents was faster in plants grown under CE mostly in later part of growth. Irrespective of treatment difference, flag leaf contained the highest amount of Chl and N than penultimate and third leaf. The higher PN was observed in leaves under CE than in the leaves in other two growing conditions. Considering growth stage, PN was the highest at flowering which reduced at the later part of growth due to degradation of Chl and N content of the leaf. Under CE it was 40.02 μmol m−2 s−1 at flowering and it reduced to only 14.77 μmol m−2 s−1 at maturity stage. The beneficial effect of CE in increasing leaf PN may be maintained by applying extra dose of nitrogen at the later stages of plant growth.  相似文献

Two cultivars (Katy and Erhuacao) of apricot (Prunus armeniaca L.) were evaluated under open-field and solar-heated greenhouse conditions in northwest China, to determine the effect of photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD), leaf temperature, and CO2 concentration on the net photosynthetic rate (P N). In greenhouse, Katy registered 28.3 μmol m−2 s−1 for compensation irradiance and 823 μmol m−2 s−1 for saturation irradiance, which were 73 and 117 % of those required by Erhuacao, respectively. The optimum temperatures for cvs. Katy and Erhuacao were 25 and 35 °C in open-field and 22 and 30 °C in greenhouse, respectively. At optimal temperatures, P N of the field-grown Katy was 16.5 μmol m−2 s−1, 21 % less than for a greenhouse-grown apricot. Both cultivars responded positively to CO2 concentrations below the CO2 saturation concentration, whereas Katy exhibited greater P N (18 %) and higher carboxylation efficiency (91 %) than Erhuacao at optimal CO2 concentration. Both cultivars exhibited greater photosynthesis in solar-heated greenhouses than in open-field, but Katy performed better than Erhuacao under greenhouse conditions.  相似文献

The calculated maximum net photosynthetic rate (P N) at saturation irradiance (I m) of 1 314.13 μmol m−2 s−1 was 25.49 μmol(CO2) m−2 s−1, and intrinsic quantum yield at zero irradiance was 0.103. The results fitted by nonrectangular hyperbolic model, rectangular hyperbolic method, binomial regression method, and the new model were compared. The maximum P N values calculated by nonrectangular hyperbolic model and rectangular hyperbolic model were higher than the measured values, and the I m calculated by nonrectangular hyperbolic model and rectangular hyperbolic model were less than measured values. Results fitted by new model showed that the response curve of P N to I was nonlinear at low I for Oryza sativa, P N increased nonlinearly with I below saturation value. Above this value, P N decreased nonlinearly with I.  相似文献

Field gas exchange and water potential in the leaves of a C3 dicot, Plantago asiatica L., and a C4 monocot, Eleusine indica Gaertn., which dominate in trampled vegetation in eastern Japan were surveyed during the growing periods for two consecutive years. Net photosynthetic rate (P N) of E. indica increased with photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) and leaf temperature (TL). P N was not saturated at PPFDs above 1500 μmol m−2 s−1 and at TL above 30 °C. On a sunny day in mid summer, maximum P N was two times higher in E. indica than in P. asiatica [42 vs. 20 μmol(CO2) m−2 s−1], but their transpiration rate (E) and the leaf water potential (ΨL) were similar. Soil-to-leaf hydraulic conductance, which probably plays a role in water absorption from the trampled compact soil, was higher in E. indica than in P. asiatica. The differences in photosynthetic traits between E. indica explain why E. indica communities more commonly develop at heavily trampled sites in summer than the P. asiatica communities. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The goal of this study was to investigate whether increased nitrogen use efficiency found in Populus nigra L. (Jean Pourtet) under elevated CO2 would correlate with changes in the production of carbon-based secondary compounds (CBSCs). Using Free-Air CO2 Enrichment (FACE) technology, a poplar plantation was exposed to either ambient (about 370 μmol mol−1 CO2) or elevated (about 550 μmol mol−1 CO2) [CO2] for 5 years. After three growing seasons, the plantation was coppiced and half of the experimental plots were fertilized with nitrogen. CBSCs, total nitrogen and lignin-bound nitrogen were quantified in secondary sprouts in seasons of active growth and dormancy during 2 years after coppicing. Neither elevated CO2 nor nitrogen fertilisation alone or in combination influenced lignin concentrations in wood. Soluble phenolics and soluble proteins in wood decreased slightly in response to elevated CO2. Higher nitrogen supply stimulated formation of CBSCs and increased protein concentrations. Lignin-bound nitrogen in wood ranged from 0.37–1.01 mg N g−1 dry mass accounting for 17–26% of total nitrogen in wood, thus, forming a sizeable nitrogen fraction resistant to chemical degradation. The concentration of this nitrogen fraction was significantly decreased by elevated CO2, increased in response to nitrogen fertilisation and showed a significant CO2 × fertilisation interaction. Seasonal changes markedly affected the internal nitrogen pools. Soluble proteins in wood were 52–143% higher in the dormant than in the growth season. Positive correlations existed between the biosynthesis of proteins and CBSCs. The limited responses to elevated CO2 and nitrogen fertilisation indicate that growth and defence are well orchestrated in P. nigra and that changes in the balance of both resources—nitrogen and C—have only marginal effects on wood chemistry.  The impact of ozone fumigation on chlorophyll a fluorescence parameters and chlorophyll content of birch trees grown at high and low fertilization were studied for 6-, 8-, and 12-week old leaves. Fluorescence parameters were measured with a portable fluorometer with its fibre optics tightly inserted in a gas exchange cuvette at light intensities from 0 to 220 μmol photons m−2 s−1. Ozone caused significant changes of primary photosynthetic reactions: a decrease of the quantum yield of photosystem II and an increase of non-photochemical quenching. In all leaves a biphasic light response of non-photochemical quenching was observed. Ozone fumigation shifted the onset of the second phase from a PFD of about 60 μmol m−2 s−1 to about 30 μmol m−2 s−1. While the fertilizer concentration had no influence on this character, high fertilization supply of plants partially reduced O3-induced damage. The light responses of Ft, Fm′ and NPQ observed in birch leaves grown in O3-free air indicate the existence of at least two different processes governing energy conversion of the photosynthetic apparatus at PS II in the range of PFD 0–200 μmol photons m−2 s−1. The first phase was attributed to a rather slowly relaxing type of non-photochemical quenching, which, at least at low PFD, is thought to be related to a state 1–2 transition. The further changes of the fluorescence parameters studied at higher PFD might be explained by an increase of energy-dependent quenching, connected with the energization of the thylakoid membrane and zeaxanthin synthesis. A major effect of ozone treatment was a lowering of PS II quantum yield. This reflects a reduction of PS II electron transport and corresponds to the reduction of CO2-fixation observed in ozonated leaves. Received: 24 September 1996 / Accepted: 27 January 1999  相似文献

A controlled growth chamber experiment was conducted to investigate the short-term water use and photosynthetic responses of 30-d-old carrot seedlings to the combined effects of CO2 concentration (50–1 050 μmol mol−1) and moisture deficits (−5, −30, −55, and −70 kPa). The photosynthetic response data was fitted to a non-rectangular hyperbola model. The estimated parameters were compared for effects of moisture deficit and elevated CO2 concentration (EC). The carboxylation efficiency (α) increased in response to mild moisture stress (−30 kPa) under EC when compared to the unstressed control. However, moderate (−55 kPa) and extreme (−70 kPa) moisture deficits reduced α under EC. Maximum net photosynthetic rate (P Nmax) did not differ between mild water deficit and unstressed controls under EC. Moderate and extreme moisture deficits reduced P Nmax by nearly 85 % compared to controls. Dark respiration rate (R D) showed no consistent response to moisture deficit. The CO2 compensation concentration (Γ) was 324 μmol mol−1 for −75 kPa and ranged 63–93 μmol mol−1 for other moisture regimes. Interaction between moisture deficit and EC was noticed for P N, ratio of intercellular and ambient CO2 concentration (C i/C a), stomatal conductance (g s ), and transpiration rate (E). P N was maximum and C i/C a was minimum at −30 kPa moisture deficit and at C a of 350 μmol mol−1. The g s and E showed an inverse relationship at all moisture deficit regimes and EC. Water use efficiency (WUE) increased with moisture deficit up to −55 kPa and declined thereafter. EC showed a positive influence towards sustaining P N and increasing WUE only under mild moisture stress, and no beneficial effects of EC were noticed at moderate or extreme moisture deficits.  相似文献

The relationships between dark respiration rate (R D) and net photosynthetic rate (P N) in Quercus ilex L. shrubs growing at the Botanical Garden in Rome were analysed. Correlation analysis of the data sets collected in the year 2006 confirmed the dependence among the considered leaf traits, in particular, R D was significantly (p<0.05) correlated with P N (r = 0.40). R D and P N increased from March to May [1.40±0.10 and 10.1±1.8 μmol(CO2) m−2 s−1 mean values of the period, respectively], when air temperature was in the range 14.8–25.2 °C, underlining the highest metabolic activity in the period of the maximum vegetative activity that favoured biomass accumulation. On the contrary, the highest R D [1.60±0.02 μmol(CO2) m−2 s−1], associated to the lowest P N rates (44 % of the maximum) and carbon use efficiency (CUE) in July underlined the mobilization of stored material during drought stress by a higher air temperature (32.7 °C).  相似文献

The carbon dioxide concentrating system in C4 photosynthesis allows high net photosynthetic rates (P N) at low internal carbon dioxide concentrations (C i), permitting higher P N relative to stomatal conductance (g s) than in C3 plants. This relation would be reflected in the ratio of C i to external ambient (C a) carbon dioxide concentration, which is often given as 0.3 or 0.4 for C4 plants. For a C a of 360 μmol mol−1 that would mean a C i about 110–140 μmol mol−1. Our field observations made near midday on three weedy C4 species, Amaranthus retroflexus, Echinochloa crus-galli, and Setaria faberi, and the C4 crop Sorghum bicolor indicated mean values of C i of 183–212 μ mol mol−1 at C a = 360 μmol mol−1. Measurements in two other C4 crop species grown with three levels of N fertilizer indicated that while midday values of C i at high photon flux were higher at limiting N, even at high nitrogen C i averaged 212 and 196 μmol mol−1 for Amaranthus hypochondriacus and Zea mays, respectively. In these two crops midday C i decreased with increasing leaf to air water vapor pressure difference. Averaged over all measurement days, the mean C i across all C4 species was 198 μmol mol−1, for a C i/C a ratio of 0.55. Prior measurements on four herbaceous C3 species using the same instrument indicated an average C i/C a ratio of 0.69. Hence midday C i values in C 4 species under field conditions may often be considerably higher and more similar to those of C3 species than expected from measurements made on plants in controlled environments. Reducing g s in C4 crops at low water vapor pressure differences could potentially improve their water use efficiency without decreasing P N.  相似文献

Six months old in vitro-grown Anoectochilus formosanus plantlets were transferred to ex-vitro acclimation under low irradiance, LI [60 μmol(photon) m−2 s−1], intermediate irradiance, II [180 μmol(photon) m−2 s−1], and high irradiance, HI [300 μmol(photon) m−2 s−1] for 30 d. Imposition of II led to a significant increase of chlorophyll (Chl) b content, rates of net photosynthesis (P N) and transpiration (E), stomatal conductance (g s), electron transfer rate (ETR), quantum yield of electron transport from water through photosystem 2 (ΦPS2), and activity of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/ oxygenase (RuBPCO, EC 4.1.1.39). This indicates that Anoectochilus was better acclimated at II compared to LI treatment. On the other hand, HI acclimation led to a significant reduction of Chl a and b, P N, E, g s, photochemical quenching, dark-adapted quantum efficiency of open PS2 centres (Fv/Fm), probability of an absorbed photon reaching an open PS2 reaction centre (Fv′/Fm′), ETR, ΦPS2, and energy efficiency of CO2 fixation (ΦCO2PS2). This indicates that HI treatment considerably exceeded the photo-protective capacity and Anoectochilus suffered HI induced damage to the photosynthetic apparatus. Imposition of HI significantly increased the contents of antheraxanthin and zeaxanthin (ZEA), non-photochemical quenching, and conversion of violaxanthin to ZEA. Thus Anoectochilus modifies its system to dissipate excess excitation energy and to protect the photosynthetic machinery.  相似文献

Increased atmospheric CO2 was shown to affect a variety of physiological processes in plants, including photosynthesis and growth with repercussions on crop yield and nutritive value. Perennial alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) is a sustainable crop with a deep root system, living in symbiosis with rhizobium for nitrogen (N) fixation. The objective of the project was to determine the combined effects of elevated CO2 and rhizobial strains on photosynthesis, growth, N fixation, and nutritive value of alfalfa, and on soil microflora. Alfalfa inoculated with two different strains of rhizobia (Sinorhizobium meliloti strains A2 and NRG34) was grown 2 months at day/night temperatures of 22/17°C under either 400 (near ambient) or 800 (elevated) μmol mol−1 of CO2. The photosynthetic response of alfalfa to elevated CO2 differed according to the rhizobial strain. At the end of the experiment, elevated CO2 stimulated photosynthetic rates by 50% in plants associated with A2 but there was no significant increase in plants nodulated with NRG34. Nitrogenase activity (+38%) and shoot growth (+60%) were stimulated under 800 μmol mol−1 of CO2 for alfalfa inoculated with both strains. Root dry weight was significantly higher at 800 μmol mol−1 of CO2 only with strain A2. Fibre concentration decreased in response to elevated atmospheric CO2 in alfalfa inoculated with strain A2 resulting in plant material with greater nutritive value when inoculated with A2 compared to NRG34. In the soil, elevated CO2 increased the proportion of fungi in the microbial community while decreasing Gram bacteria. For alfalfa inoculated with rhizobial strain A2, photosynthetic rates, nitrogenase activity, and growth were all stimulated by increased atmospheric CO2 compared to less consistently positive responses to elevated CO2 when inoculated with NRG34. Our results show that it is possible to identify rhizobial strains to improve plant performance under predicted future CO2 concentrations with no negative effect on nutritive value. In sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) grown under controlled conditions and subjected to drought by withholding watering, net photosynthetic rate (P N) and stomatal conductance (g s) of attached leaves decreased as leaf water potential (Ψw) declined from −0.3 to −2.9 MPa. Although g s decreased over the whole range of Ψw, nearly constant values in the intercellular CO2 concentrations (C i) were observed as Ψw decreased to −1.8 MPa, but C i increased as Ψw decreased further. Relative quantum yield, photochemical quenching, and the apparent quantum yield of photosynthesis decreased with water deficit, whereas non-photochemical quenching (qNP) increased progressively. A highly significant negative relationship between qNP and ATP content was observed. Water deficit did not alter the pyridine nucleotide concentration but decreased ATP content suggesting metabolic impairment. At a photon flux density of 550 μmol m−2 s−1, the allocation of electrons from photosystem (PS) 2 to O2 reduction was increased by 51 %, while the allocation to CO2 assimilation was diminished by 32 %, as Ψw declined from −0.3 to −2.9 MPa. A significant linear relationship between mean P N and the rate of total linear electron transport was observed in well watered plants, the correlation becoming curvilinear when water deficit increased. The maximum quantum yield of PS2 was not affected by water deficit, whereas qP declined only at very severe stress and the excess photon energy was dissipated by increasing qNP indicating that a greater proportion of the energy was thermally dissipated. This accounted for the apparent down-regulation of PS2 and supported the protective role of qNP against photoinhibition in sunflower.  相似文献

Summary The proliferation and survival of avocado nodal cultures of juvenile origin were affected by the form and concentration of nitrogen. Optimum growth was achieved on modified Murashige and Skoog medium containing 67% KNO3 and 33% NH4NO3 with total N of 40 mM supplemented with 100 mg l−1 myo-inositol, 1 mg l−1 thiamine HCl, 30 g l−1 sucrose, and 4.44 μM BA with a 16-h photoperiod (120–150 μmol m−2 s−1). Proliferating shoots and plantlets were photosynthetically active. Better shoot growth and accumulation of higher biomass occurred in a CO2-enriched environment than under ambient CO2 conditions. CO2 assimilation efficiency, however, was higher under the latter conditions than in a CO2-enhanced environment, e.g., 31±7 and 17±2 μmol CO2 m−2 s−1, respectively. The net CO2 assimilation rates of in vitro grown plantlets were comparable to those of seedlings ex vitro.  相似文献

The effect of elevated carbon dioxide concentration on the changes in the biomass, photosynthesis and nutrient composition was investigated in two leafy vegetables. Spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) and fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum L.) plants were grown in open top chambers under either ambient (ACO2, 350 ± 50 μmol mol−1) or elevated (ECO2, 600 ± 50 μmol mol−1) CO2 concentration and analyzed 40, 60 and 80 days after exposure. The plants grown in ECO2 had higher net photosynthetic rate and lower stomatal conductance when compared with the plants grown in ACO2. ECO2 also changed the nutrient composition: a lower N, Mg and Fe contents and higher C and Ca contents were observed in the leaves of plants exposed to ECO2 than in those grown at ACO2.  相似文献

In crowns of chestnut trees the absorption of radiant energy is not homogeneous; leaves from the south (S) side are the most irradiated, but leaves from the east (E) and west (W) sides receive around 70 % and those from north (N) face less than 20 % of the S irradiation. Compared to the S leaves, those from the N side were 10 % smaller, their stomata density was 14 % smaller, and their laminae were 21 % thinner. N leaves had 0.63 g(Chl) m−2, corresponding to 93 % of total chlorophyll (Chl) amount in leaves of S side. The ratios of Chl a/b were 2.9 and 3.1 and of Chl/carotenoids (Car) 5.2 and 4.8, respectively, in N and S leaves. Net photosynthetic rate (P N) was 3.9 μmol(CO2) m−2 s−1 in S leaves, in the E, W, and N leaves 81, 77, and 38 % of that value, respectively. Morning time (10:00 h) was the period of highest P N in the whole crown, followed by 13:00 h (85 % of S) and 16:00 h with 59 %. Below 500 μmol m−2 s−1 of photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD), N leaves produced the highest P N, while at higher PPFD, the S leaves were most active. In addition, the fruits from S side were 10 % larger than those from the N side.  相似文献

During two intensive field campaigns in summer and autumn 2004 nitrogen (N2O, NO/NO2) and carbon (CO2, CH4) trace gas exchange between soil and the atmosphere was measured in a sessile oak (Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl.) forest in Hungary. The climate can be described as continental temperate. Fluxes were measured with a fully automatic measuring system allowing for high temporal resolution. Mean N2O emission rates were 1.5 μg N m−2 h−1 in summer and 3.4 μg N m−2 h−1 in autumn, respectively. Also mean NO emission rates were higher in autumn (8.4 μg N m−2 h−1) as compared to summer (6.0 μg N m−2 h−1). However, as NO2 deposition rates continuously exceeded NO emission rates (−9.7 μg N m−2 h−1 in summer and −18.3 μg N m−2 h−1 in autumn), the forest soil always acted as a net NO x sink. The mean value of CO2 fluxes showed only little seasonal differences between summer (81.1 mg C m−2 h−1) and autumn (74.2 mg C m−2 h−1) measurements, likewise CH4uptake (summer: −52.6 μg C m−2 h−1; autumn: −56.5 μg C m−2 h−1). In addition, the microbial soil processes net/gross N mineralization, net/gross nitrification and heterotrophic soil respiration as well as inorganic soil nitrogen concentrations and N2O/CH4 soil air concentrations in different soil depths were determined. The respiratory quotient (ΔCO2 resp ΔO2 resp−1) for the uppermost mineral soil, which is needed for the calculation of gross nitrification via the Barometric Process Separation (BaPS) technique, was 0.8978 ± 0.008. The mean value of gross nitrification rates showed only little seasonal differences between summer (0.99 μg N kg−1 SDW d−1) and autumn measurements (0.89 μg N kg−1 SDW d−1). Gross rates of N mineralization were highest in the organic layer (20.1–137.9 μg N kg−1 SDW d−1) and significantly lower in the uppermost mineral layer (1.3–2.9 μg N kg−1 SDW d−1). Only for the organic layer seasonality in gross N mineralization rates could be demonstrated, with highest mean values in autumn, most likely caused by fresh litter decomposition. Gross mineralization rates of the organic layer were positively correlated with N2O emissions and negatively correlated with CH4 uptake, whereas soil CO2 emissions were positively correlated with heterotrophic respiration in the uppermost mineral soil layer. The most important abiotic factor influencing C and N trace gas fluxes was soil moisture, while the influence of soil temperature on trace gas exchange rates was high only in autumn.  相似文献

Summary MicropropagatedSpathiphyllum “Petite” plantlets were acclimatized at low- or high-light intensities [photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) 100 or 300 μmol·m−2·s−1]. During the first days chlorophyll fluorescence measurements show a partial photoinhibition of the photosynthetic apparatus, expressed by a decrease of the variable over maximal fluorescence ratio (Fv/Fm). This inhibition of Fv/Fm was significantly higher for plants grown at high-light intensity, leading to a photooxidation of chlorophyll. Newly formed leaves were better adapted to the ex vitro climatic condition (as shown by the increase of the Fv/Fm ratio) and had a higher net photosynthesis compared with in vitro formed leaves. Nevertheless, plants grown at 300 μmol·m−2·s−1 were photoinhibited, compared with those at 100 μmol·m−2·s−1. A sudden exposure to high-light intensity of 1-, 10- or 25-d-old transplanted plants (shift in PPFD from 100 to 300 μmol·m−2·s−1) gave a linear decrease of Fv/Fm over a 12-h period, which was reflected in a 50% reduction of net photosynthesis. No significant interaction between day and hour was found, indicating high-light exposure causes the same photoinhibitory effect on in vitro and ex vitro formed leaves.  相似文献

We determined the interactive effects of irradiance, elevated CO2 concentration (EC), and temperature in carrot (Daucus carota var. sativus). Plants of the cv. Red Core Chantenay (RCC) were grown in a controlled environmental plant growth room and exposed to 3 levels of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) (400, 800, 1 200 μmol m−2 s−1), 3 leaf chamber temperatures (15, 20, 30 °C), and 2 external CO2 concentrations (C a), AC and EC (350 and 750 μmol mol−1, respectively). Rates of net photosynthesis (P N) and transpiration (E) and stomatal conductance (g s ) were measured, along with water use efficiency (WUE) and ratio of internal and external CO2 concentrations (C i/C a). P N revealed an interactive effect between PAR and C a. As PAR increased so did P N under both C a regimes. The g s showed no interactive effects between the three parameters but had singular effects of temperature and PAR. E was strongly influenced by the combination of PAR and temperature. WUE was interactively affected by all three parameters. Maximum WUE occurred at 15 °C and 1 200 μmol m−2 s− 1 PAR under EC. The C i /C a was influenced independently by temperature and C a. Hence photosynthetic responses are interactively affected by changes in irradiance, external CO2 concentration, and temperature. EC significantly compensates the inhibitory effects of high temperature and irradiance on P N and WUE.  相似文献

The seasonal changes of photosynthesis of cones of Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi Carr.) trees showed that gross photosynthetic rate of young cones (P G) was 2–3 μmol m−2 s−1 at surface area unit and P G/R D (dark respiration of cones) peaked about 0.7 in the same period, indicating that 70 % of respiratory CO2 was re-fixed. With maturation, P G and P G/R D sharply decreased. Chlorophyll content in cones was 3–20 % of that in leaves, which made it a limiting factor for photosynthesis and its content was closely correlated with photosynthetic capacity. Although sunken and linearly arranged stomatal organs were found on the scale of young cones, differently from the significant regulation of leaf photosynthesis, these stomata tended to be non-functional since CO2 is not limiting factor for cone photosynthesis. Thus photosynthesis of larch cones is an additional contribution to their development.  相似文献

The intermediate and terminal products of cyanide and thiocyanate decomposition by individual strains of the genus Pseudomonas, P. putida strain 21 and P. stutzeri strain 18, and by their association were analyzed. The activity of the enzymes of nitrogen and sulfur metabolism in these strains was compared with that of the collection strains P. putida VKM B-2187T and P. stutzeri VKM B-975T. Upon the introduction of CN and SCN into cell suspensions of strains 18 and 21 in phosphate buffer (pH 8.8), the production of NH 4 + was observed. Due to the high rate of their utilization, NH3, NH 4 + , and CNO were absent from the culture liquids of P. putida strain 21 and P. stutzeri strain 18 grown with CN or SCN. Both Pseudomonas strains decomposed SCN via cyanate production. The cyanase activity was 0.75 μmol/(min mg protein) for P. putida strain 21 and 1.26 μmol/(min mg protein) for P. stutzeri strain 18. The cyanase activity was present in the cells grown with SCN but absent in cells grown with NH 4 + . Strain 21 of P. putida was a more active CN decomposer than strain 18 of P. stutzeri. Ammonium and CO2 were the terminal nitrogen and carbon products of CN and SCN decomposition. The terminal sulfur products of SCN decomposition by P. stutzeri strain 18 and P. putida strain 21 were thiosulfate and tetrathionate, respectively. The strains utilized the toxic compounds in the anabolism only, as sources of nitrogen (CN and SCN) and sulfur (SCN). The pathway of thiocyanate decomposition by the association of bacteria of the genus Pseudomonas is proposed based on the results obtained. Original Russian Text ? N.V. Grigor’eva, T.F.
