The Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) is a common predator of both roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) and reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) in Sweden. We investigated the influence of prey availability, latitude, sex, and age on body size and body mass variation of the Eurasian lynx in Sweden, using data from 243 specimens whose locality of capture, year of capture, sex, and age were known. We found that both body size and body mass of the lynx in Sweden are mainly affected by the lynx sex and age but also by the availability of prey during the first year of life. Body size and body mass of lynx as well as the density of roe deer increased from Central Sweden to South. Furthermore, body size and body mass of lynx increased from Central Sweden to North (i.e. within the reindeer husbandry area). Lynx body size was slightly smaller within the reindeer husbandry area (approximately north of latitudes 62°–63°N) compared to outside, probably because reindeer are more difficult prey to hunt, as well as being migratory and thus an unpredictable prey for the Eurasian lynx compared to the non-migratory roe deer. Our results support a growing body of evidence showing that food availability at growth has a major effect on body size of animals.  相似文献

Abstract

Haplotype diversity patterns based on internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and gpd (glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase) in Scandinavian Rhytidium rugosum were compared between four populations from the mountain range and two in the southern lowlands. The mountain populations differ from the southern lowland ones in haplotype composition and the lowland ones differ from each other, suggesting different histories. A coalescent-based analysis (LAMARC) indicated immigration into the population now found in the mountains from that represented in the lowlands. Because several factors argue against such a dispersal scenario within the relatively short postglacial period, it is proposed that these migration patterns are older than the postglacial period. It is suggested that the mountain range populations immigrated from a source population either in the north-east or within Scandinavia, whereas the lowland populations are likely to represent remains of the glacial population of lowland Europe. The highest haplotype diversity in Scandinavia was found in the Gudbrandsdalen area in southern Norway. This is probably explained by the fact that this is the only region in Europe where R. rugosum regularly reproduces sexually. The lowest diversity was found on the Great Alvar on the island of Öland off the Baltic coast of southern Sweden, and is most likely a result of gradual loss of haplotypes over time.  相似文献

A pollen analytical study of a core sample from the Torihama site in the Sea of Japan area of the Kinki region was carried out. This core, dated by three types of tephra, corresponded to the period between the early and the middle postglacial periods. In the early postglacial period, the cool-temperate deciduous forest was accompanied byCryptomeria japonica. In the middle postglacial period,C. japonica forests formed on the lowlands. Lucidophyllous forests developed after the deposition of K-Ah ash (6300 years BP) in the Sea of Japan area of the Kinki region, which was later than the development of those in the inland and Pacific Ocean areas.  相似文献

Local and regional vegetation since the last glacial period was reconstructed on the basis of a palynological study of sediment at Iwaya, in the Sea of Japan area, western Japan. During the interstade (before about 30 000 years BP), forests were composed predominantly ofCryptomeria japonica withTsuga sieboldii and cool-temperate deciduous broad-leaved trees. In the pre-full-glacial, the full-glacial and the early late-glacial (30 000-12 000 years BP), forests were dominated by temperate (montane) and boreal (subalpine) Pinaceae andBetula. During the early full-glacial, the pinaceous forests were mixed with cool-temperate trees such asFagus crenata. In the late full-glacial (18 000-16 000 years BP), the maximum development of pinaceous conifer forests was recognized. Cool-temperate broad-leaved forests composed mainly ofF. crenata andQuercus (Lepidobalanus) replaced the pinaceous forests at about 12 000 years BP and were maintained to the early postglacial.Cryptomeria japonica was distributed around the Mikata lowland during the last glacial.Cryptomeria japonica, which began to increase at 16 000 years BP, increased abruptly in the early postglacial and spread throughout the postglacial in the lowlands. After 6300 years BP, lucidophyllous forests composed mainly ofQuercus (Cyclobalanopsis) andCastanopsis were established in the Mikata district; this was later than in the inland and the Pacific Ocean areas in the Kinki region, western Japan. In historic times (afterca 2000 years BP), secondary forest ofPinus densiflora, which can grow as a pioneer in disturbed habitats, spread.  相似文献

 We investigated patterns of isozyme variation and the hierarchic structure of genetic diversity in 25 Scandinavian populations of the lilioid herb, Anthericum liliago. Isozyme data suggest that tetraploid A. liliago has an allopolyploid origin and that A. ramosum may be one of its diploid progenitors. Two populations contained known or suspected hybrids between A. liliago and A. ramosum. Isozymes show that one population from S Sweden contains both triploid (hybrid) and tetraploid individuals whereas a putatively hybrid Danish population represents diploid A. liliago. There is an overall northward and eastward decline in allelic richness in the tetraploid populations, with the highest numbers of alleles in Denmark and SW Sweden. This pattern is consistent with a progressive loss of allelic variation during the species' postglacial colonization of Scandinavia. The between-population component of genetic diversity is 4% (compared with 12% in diploid A. ramosum), the between-region diversity component is 7% and 89% of the total diversity is stored within populations. The shrubby milkwort (Polygala chamaebuxus L.) is widely distributed in the Alps, but occurs also in the lower mountain ranges of Central Europe such as the Franconian Jura or the Bohemian uplands. Populations in these regions may either originate from glacial survival or from postglacial recolonization. In this study, we analyzed 30 populations of P. chamaebuxus from the whole distribution range using AFLP (Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism) analysis to identify glacial refugia and to illuminate the origin of P. chamaebuxus in the lower mountain ranges of Central Europe. Genetic variation and the number of rare fragments within populations were highest in populations from the central part of the distribution range, especially in the Southern Alps (from the Tessin Alps and the Prealps of Lugano to the Triglav Massiv) and in the middle part of the northern Alps. These regions may have served, in accordance with previous studies, as long‐term refugia for the glacial survival of the species. The geographic pattern of genetic variation, as revealed by analysis of molecular variance, Bayesian cluster analysis and a PopGraph genetic network was, however, only weak. Instead of postglacial recolonization from only few long‐term refugia, which would have resulted in deeper genetic splits within the data set, broad waves of postglacial expansion from several short‐term isolated populations in the center to the actual periphery of the distribution range seem to be the scenario explaining the observed pattern of genetic variation most likely. The populations from the lower mountain ranges in Central Europe were more closely related to the populations from the southwestern and northern than from the nearby eastern Alps. Although glacial survival in the Bohemian uplands cannot fully be excluded, P. chamaebuxus seems to have immigrated postglacially from the southwestern or central‐northern parts of the Alps into these regions during the expansion of the pine forests in the early Holocene.  相似文献

Crown and cusp areas of mandibular molars were measured and analyzed on a sample of 249 specimens attributed to Australopithecus afarensis, A. africanus, A. (Paranthropus) robustus, A. (P.) boisei, and early Homo. In addition to intertaxon comparisons, we compared data that had been collected independently by two of the authors using methods that differ slightly in technique of measurement. Interobserver differences were evaluated by the t-test of paired comparisons, method error statistic, percent differences, and principal component analysis. Results suggest that between-technique error of measurement of overall crown area is small. Error estimates for individual cusp area measurements were of larger relative magnitude. However, these were not sufficient to detract from the conclusions derived from comparative analyses. Our results are in general agreement with previous assessments of early hominid dental size. Crown areas of A. africanus, however, exhibit a mosaic pattern, with M1 similar in size to that of A. afarensis and early Homo, and M2 and M3 similar in size to that of A. robustus. Intertaxon comparisons of relative cusp area were undertaken by univariate statistics and principal component analysis. These analyses revealed that while A. (P.) robustus and A. (P.) boisei both possess mandibular molars with cusp proportions significantly different from the ‘non-robust’ taxa, these differences are substantially greater in A. The strength of plant‐herbivore interactions varies spatially and through plant ontogeny, which may result in variable selection on plant defense, both among populations and life‐history stages. To test whether populations have diverged in herbivore resistance at an early plant stage, we quantified oviposition preference and larval feeding by Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) on young (5–6 weeks old) Arabidopsis lyrata (L.) O'Kane & Al‐Shehbaz (Brassicaceae) plants, originating from 12 natural populations, six from Sweden and six from Norway. Arabidopsis lyrata can be trichome‐producing or glabrous, with glabrous plants usually receiving more damage from insect herbivores in natural populations. We used the six populations polymorphic for trichome production to test whether resistance against P. xylostella differs between the glabrous and the trichome‐producing morph among young plants. There was considerable variation among populations in the number of eggs received and the proportion of leaf area consumed by P. xylostella, but not between regions (Sweden vs. Norway) or trichome morphs. Rosette size explained a significant portion of the variation in oviposition and larval feeding. The results demonstrate that among‐population variation in resistance to insect herbivory can be detected among very young individuals of the perennial herb A. lyrata. They further suggest that trichome densities are too low at this plant developmental stage to contribute to resistance, and that the observed among‐population variation in resistance is related to differences in other plant traits.  相似文献

Polymorphism of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in cattle and buffaloes   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from two breeds of cattle, viz., [Hariana (Bos indicus), Holstein (Bos taurus)] and Indian water buffalo (Bubalis bubalus), was analyzed using 13 restriction endonucleases which recognized an average of about 40 six-base sites. Polymorphism among cattle was detected with six of these enzymes. The two Holstein differed at six sites, whereas the Hariana breed (Bos indicus) did not show any site polymorphism. Surprisingly, the Hariana type differed by only one site from one of the Holstein types. The total size of buffalo mtDNA was estimated to be 16.4 kb. Polymorphism within the Murrah buffalo breed was observed with respect to aBglI site. Scarcely any of the restriction fragments of buffalo mtDNA matched those of cattle mtDNA.  相似文献

In order to clarify the origin and genetic diversity of indigenous cattle breeds in China, we carried out phylogenetic analysis of representatives of those breeds by employing mitochondrial gene polymorphism. Complete cyt b gene sequences, 1140 bp in length, were determined for a total of 136 individuals from 18 different breeds and these sequences were clustered into two distinct genetic lineages: taurine (Bos taurus) and zebu (Bos indicus). In analysis of the cyt b gene diversity, Chinese cattle showed higher nucleotide (0.00923) and haplotype diversity (0.848) than the reports from other studies, and the animals from the taurine lineage indicated higher nucleotide diversity (0.00330) and haplotype diversity (0.746) than the ones from the zebu lineage (0.00136; 0.661). The zebu mtDNA dominated in the southern breeds (63.3–100%), while the taurine dominated in the northern breeds (81.8–100%). Six cattle breeds from the central area of China exhibited intermediate frequencies of zebu mtDNA (25–71.4%). This polymorphism revealed a declining south-to-north gradient of female zebu introgression and a geographical hybrid zone of Bos taurus and Bos indicus in China.  相似文献

The perennial herbs Silene vulgaris and S. uniflora are closely related, partially sympatric and interfertile, yet morphologically distinct. We used nuclear (allozyme) and plastid (polymerase chain reaction–restriction fragment length polymorphism) DNA markers to investigate whether these species have a shared history of postglacial colonization and hybridization in Europe, as inferred from large‐scale patterns of geographic variation. The majority of plastid haplotypes and allozyme alleles were widespread and patchily distributed within both species and there was no geographic structure in the distributions of shared allozymes or haplotypes. The mosaic variation is consistent with a scenario in which repeated episodes of interspecific hybridization pre‐dated the largely allopatric range expansion of the two species during the postglacial period. Our overall results are not consistent with a scenario of extensive hybridization and introgression during the postglacial range expansion of the species or within their current areas of sympatry, but we found some evidence for local, postglacial evolution and hybridization in the Baltic region. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 166 , 127–148.  相似文献

Deviations of the site frequency spectrum of mutations (SFS) from neutral expectations may be caused by natural selection or by demographic processes such as population subdivision or temporal changes in population size. As most widespread temperate and boreal tree species have expanded from glacial refugia in the past 13 000 years, colonization bottlenecks associated with this migration may have left variable demographic signatures among geographic populations corresponding to distance from the refugia. To determine whether the signature of postglacial re‐colonization has skewed the SFS in the widely distributed conifer Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carr.), we re‐sequenced 153 nuclear genes in six populations from across the species range. We found that while the SFS for the pooled sample produced negative values for Tajima’s D and Fay and Wu’s H, these statistics exhibited strong clinal variation when populations were analysed separately (R2 = 0.84, P = 0.007 for Tajima’s D and R2 = 0.65, P = 0.033 for Fay and Wu’s H). When historical bottlenecks of varying age were simulated using approximate Bayesian computation, distance of populations from the southern range limit explained most of the variation in bottleneck timing among populations (R2 = 0.89, P = 0.003). These data suggest that sequential population bottlenecks during postglacial re‐colonization have resulted in diverse among‐population signatures within the contemporary SFS in Sitka spruce, with rare variants more common in the south, and medium‐frequency variants more common in the north. Our results also emphasize the need to consider sampling strategy and to explore population‐specific null demographic models in surveys of nucleotide variation in widely distributed species.  相似文献

Current disjunct patterns can result from long‐distance dispersal or postglacial contraction. We herein investigate the evolutionary history of Triplostegia to elucidate the disjunction between the Himalaya–Hengduan Mountain region (HHM) and Taiwan (TW). Genetic structure of Triplostegia was investigated for 48 populations using sequences from five chloroplast loci and the ribosomal nuclear internal transcribed spacer. Divergence time estimation, ancestral area reconstruction, and species distribution modeling (SDM) were employed to examine the biogeographic history of Triplostegia. Substantial genetic differentiation among populations from southwestern China (SW), Central China (CC), and TW was detected. Triplostegia was inferred to have originated in SW, and diversification began during the late Miocene; CC was colonized in the mid‐Pliocene, and TW was finally colonized in the early Pleistocene. SDM suggested an expansion of climatically suitable areas during the Last Glacial Maximum and range contraction during the Last interglacial in Triplostegia. Disjunction between HHM and TW in Triplostegia is most likely the consequence of topographic isolation and postglacial contraction. The potential climatic suitability areas for Triplostegia by 2070s (2061–2080) are predicted to slightly shrink and move northward. With continued global warming and human‐induced deforestation, extinction risk may increase for the cold‐adapted species, and appropriate strategies should be employed for ecosystem conservation.  相似文献

In the subfossil assemblages of chironomids and cladocerans significant changes were found during the late-glacial and postglacial development of a small, shallow North German lake. The successions observed were obviously not related to eutrophication but to factors such as climatic conditions and lake siltation. The absence of species of the subgenus Eubosmina during postglacial times as well as the predominance of Alonella species among the chydorids was due to the small dimensions of the water body.  相似文献

We quantitatively examined the differences in the size and proportion of the Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata) by comparing the Early Jomon specimens from Torihama shell-midden, Fukui Prefecture and modern specimens from Fukui Prefecture. The purpose of this study was to explore the temporal change in the proportion and size of teeth of the Japanese macaques based on the quantified data. The result of measurements of lower premolars and molars demonstrated that sexual dimorphism was evident only among the modern specimens where the females were significantly smaller than males. The size of male Torihama specimens was within the range of the modern population, whereas the size of the female Torihama specimens was significantly larger than the modern female population. The proportional pattern of premolars and molars for male and female Torihama specimens also differed. True generalized microdontia in a subadult skeleton is described. The bones, dating from the Middle Ages, were excavated at Alborg, Denmark. True generalized microdontia is an extremely rare condition characterized by well-formed teeth with crowns smaller than two times the standard deviation from the population means. Both the deciduous and permanent teeth are involved. The dimensions of the few fragmentary bones were compared with those of medieval Danish and Norwegian samples and the measurements of the teeth with a number of medieval and modern samples. The gracile skull was of normal size except for the low symphyseal mandibular height. The clavicle and the scapular fragment were of very small dimensions suggesting an extremely slender figure. No long bones were found. The dentition was characterized by congenital absence of nine teeth (4 M33, 3 P22, 1 P1, 1 I2) with retained deciduous teeth and by microdontia. With few exceptions the shape of the teeth was within the normal range of variation. The lengths of the roots were normal. The relationship between partial anodontia and tooth size is discussed. The establishment of the crown-size of deciduous molars during intrauterine life is documented. Possible causes for generalized microdontia is reviewed and it is concluded that in the present case, the evidence indicates an intrauterine growth retardation (IU.G.R.) which was partly outgrown during childhood. The nature of IU.G.R. and its incidence are briefly mentioned.  相似文献

Restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) was used to examine the genetic structure among field voles (Microtus agrestis) from southern and central Sweden. A total of 57 haplotypes was identified in 158 voles from 60 localities. Overall mtDNA diversity was high, but both haplotype and nucleotide diversity exhibited pronounced geographic heterogeneity. Phylogenetic analyses revealed a shallow tree with seven primary mtDNA lineages separated by sequence divergences ranging from 0.6% to 1.0%. The geographic structure of mtDNA diversity and lineage distribution was complex but strongly structured and deviated significantly from an equilibrium situation. The extensive mtDNA diversity observed and the recent biogeographic history of the region suggests that the shallow mtDNA structure in the field vole cannot be explained solely by stochastic lineage sorting in situ or isolation by distance. Instead, the data suggest that the genetic imprints of historical demographic conditions and vicariant geographic events have been preserved and to a large extent determine the contemporary geographic distribution of mtDNA variation. A plausible historical scenario involves differentiation of mtDNA lineages in local populations in glacial refugia, a moving postglacial population structure, and bottlenecks and expansions of mtDNA lineages during the postglacial recolonization of Sweden. By combining the mtDNA data with an analysis of Y-chromosome variation, a specific population unit was identified in southwestern Sweden. This population, defined by a unique mtDNA lineage and fixation of a Y-chromosome variant, probably originated in a population bottleneck in southern Sweden about 12,000 to 13,000 calendar years ago.  相似文献

We investigated allozyme variation in 34 populations of the perennial herb Silene nutans from Sweden and northern Finland, areas that were ice-covered during the last (Weichselian) glaciation. The present geographical structure of genetic variation in S. nutans in Sweden and northern Finland appears to have been mainly shaped by ancient historical processes. Patterns of variation in allele frequencies suggest two major postglacial immigration routes into Sweden, with populations entering the area from both the south and the east and forming a contact zone with admixed populations in central Sweden. While estimates of within-population genetic diversity and allelic richness are significantly correlated with present population size and geographical position (latitude), population size is not correlated with latitude. Low genetic diversity in the northern populations is more likely to have resulted from ancient stochastic events during the process of immigration than from recent population fragmentation. F IS values are high and increase with latitude. Evidence of recent bottlenecks was detected in several southern Swedish populations: these can be interpreted in terms of population fragmentation as a result of anthropogenic disturbance. The potentially important role of northern microrefugia during postglacial dispersal is challenging the view of southern Europe as a refuge and source area of European biota. In groundwaters, large geographic ranges of presumably good dispersers are increasingly suspected to consist of assemblages of cryptic species with narrow ranges. Moreover, a large species range, even when confirmed by molecular evidence, tells us little about the spatiotemporal dynamics of dispersal. Here, we used phylogenetic inferences, species delineation methods and Bayesian phylogeographic diffusion models to test for the likelihood of postglacial colonization from distant refugia among five morphospecies of Proasellus (Isopoda, Asellidae). All morphospecies except one were monophyletic, but they comprised a total of 15–17 cryptic species. Three cryptic species retained ranges that spanned a distance >650 km, similar to that of the nominal morphospecies. Bayesian diffusion models based on mitochondrial markers revealed considerable spatiotemporal heterogeneity in dispersal rates, suggesting that short‐time dispersal windows were instrumental in shaping species ranges. Only one species was found to experience a recent, presumably postglacial, range expansion. The Jura and Alpine foothills probably played a major role in maintaining diversity within Proasellus in northern regions by acting both as diversification hotspots and Pleistocene refugia. Gaining insight into the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of dispersal rates revealed contrasting colonization dynamics among species that were not consistent with a global postglacial colonization of Europe from distant refugia.  相似文献

Accumulation rates of individual species (SpecAR) and relative abundances (percentages) of benthic foraminifera of an AMS 14C-dated high resolution sediment core from the Norwegian Seas (water depth: 2707 m) provide a record of the faunal fluctuations from the last glacial maximum across the Weichselian deglaciation to the Holocene. During glacial times, the total foraminifera accumulation remains at a very low level (< 100 specimens cm−2 kyr−1) and is dominated by two endofaunal species: Oridorsalis umbonatus (Reuss) and Siphotextularia rolshauseni (Phleger and Parker) and reworked specimens of the genus Elphidium. The following deglaciation period exhibits an increase of the AR of the total fauna at 14 kyr B.P. The species distribution is marked by the last appearance of S. rolshauseni and the first postglacial appearance of suspension feeding Cibicidoides wuellerstorfi (Schwager) 13 kyr B.P. The absolute maximum of benthic foraminiferal AR (2750 spec cm−2 kyr−1 occurred near 9 kyr B.P. at the end of the deglaciation. This maximum also marks the re-appearance of the agglutinating species Cribrostomoides subglobosus (Sars). The post-glacial interval is characterized by a twofold reduction of the total accumulation of benthic foraminifera. The species distribution shows two new species: Ammobaculites agglutinans (d'Orbigny, at 6 kyr B.P.) and Epistominella exigua (Brady, at 3.5 kyr B.P.). The total AR indicates benthic activity during glacial times was at a low level. It was significantly higher during the Holocene with an abrupt increase of benthic foraminiferal abundance from 10 to 9 kyr B.P. The Stepwise re-invasion into the postglacial deep-sea environment maybe related to specific habitat preference.  相似文献
