THE CLASSIFICATION OF PROBOSCIDEA: HOW MANY CLADISTIC CLASSIFICATIONS?   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Abstract— Hennig conceived a method to build a "phylogenetic system", with the stipulation that a "properly drawn phylogenetic tree must be directly translatable into the language of phylogenetic systematics". Consequently, this system could be the general reference system of biology. A review of the classificatory technical improvements, conventions and rules which have been proposed for the past twenty years together with their application to the classification of the Proboscidea, leads to the conclusion that more than one formal system can be built upon one given cladogram. As words are used more frequently for communication than diagrams, schemes or graphs, the "general reference system of biology1' remains somewhere in Utopia. The "phylogenetic system" is rather more synonymous with a cladogram than with a written classification.  相似文献

The oscillatory behavior of the cephalopod giant axons in response to an applied current has been established by previous investigators. In the study reported here the relationship between the familiar "RC" electrotonic response and the oscillatory behavior is examined experimentally and shown to be dependent on the membrane potential. Computations based on the three-current system which was inferred from electrical measurements by Hodgkin and Huxley yield subthreshold responses in good agreement with experimental data. The point which is developed explicitly is that since the three currents, in general, have nonzero resting values and two currents, the "Na" system and the "K" system, are controlled by voltage-dependent time-variant conductances, the subthreshold behavior of the squid axon in the small-signal range can be looked upon as arising from phenomenological inductance or capacitance. The total phenomenological impedance as a function of membrane potential is derived by linearizing the empirically fitted equations which describe the time-variant conductances. At the resting potential the impedance consists of three structures in parallel, namely, two series RL elements and one series RC element. The true membrane capacitance acts in parallel with the phenomenological elements, to give a total impedance which is, in effect, a parallel R, L, C system with a "natural frequency" of oscillation. At relatively hyperpolarized levels the impedance "degenerates" to an RC system.  相似文献

A simplified version of a system for computer-aided diagnosis of acute abdominal pain has been tested by "new" personnel unfamiliar with the previous system. After a two-month learning period the system proved more accurate in its diagnoses than the unaided clinician, and during the first five months of using the system the unaided clinicians'' accuracy rose from 73% to 84%. When computer "feedback" was withdrawn the clinicians'' diagnostic accuracy reverted towards the previous, "unaided" level. These findings further validate the concept of the computer as a potentially valuable diagnostic aid but indicate that a training period and computer feedback are important factors in its 4 use.  相似文献

Summary The efficacy of nitrate addition, with and without inoculation with a sulfide-resistant strain ofThiobacillus denitrificans (strain F), in reducing sulfide levels in an experimental system using cores and subsurface formation water from a gas storage facility was examined. The addition of nitrate (40 mM) alone to the formation water injected into core systems operated at hydraulic retention times of 3.2 and 16.7 h resulted in lower effluent sulfide concentrations, from an influent concentration of about 170–190 M to an effluent concentration of 110 and 3 M, respectively. A reduction in effluent nitrate concentrations in both core systems indicated the presence of indigenous nitrate-using populations. After strain F was inoculated into the core system operated at the shorter retention time, the effluent sulfide concentration decreased from 110 to 16–25 M. The effluent sulfate concentration increased, and the effluent nitrate concentration decreased concomitant with the presence of high concentrations of denitrifying thiobacilli in the inoculated core system. The denitrifying thiobacilli detected after inoculation were presumed to be strain F since these organisms were not detected in this core system before inoculation, or in any of the samples from the uninoculated core system. These data suggest that the efficacy of the nitrate treatment may depend on the residence times of the liquids in the core system, and that inoculation with strain F was required to reduce sulfide levels to <20 M in the core system operated at a short hydraulic retention time.  相似文献

Summary A recently designed interference-filte monochromator system for biological purposes is described (spectral range: 400–800 m). The system contains 6 monochromator units. It operates with projection lamps (500 or 750 W) as sources of radiation. In each unit the optical system of a high-power projector (Prado 500, Leitz) is used. The irradiances which can be obtained with a single interference-filter are rather high: about 1500 ergs/cm2. sec at 412 m, about 14000 ergs/cm2. sec at 613 m. — In addition to the monochromator system the designs of standard-fields of radiation for red and far-red are presented and data are given concerning a sensitive thermopile Multiflex-galvanometer system. China''s rural-urban dual society system is instituted by its unique hukou system. This system causes inequalities in social status between permanent urban and rural residents, and discrimination against rural-to-urban migrants is thus prevalent. A series of studies, based on system justification theory, sought to address the impact of the hukou system on the discrimination against rural-to-urban migrants. Study 1 showed that the justification of the hukou system could predict discrimination operationalized using a social distance measure. Study 2 found that priming of the proposed abolishment of the current hukou system led to reduced social distance. Study 3, using a recruiting scenario, further demonstrated that priming of the proposed abolishment of the system led to reduced discrimination in salary decision. Consistent with our predictions, discrimination against rural-to-urban migrants could be triggered by justifying the current hukou system, while priming of the abolishment of the system serves to decrease discrimination. The present research thereby sheds light on China''s reform of its hukou system to achieve social justice and equality from a psychological perspective.  相似文献

Starch gel electrophoresis of sonicated rabbit red cells using a modified system of buffers gave a maximum of 24 zones of esterase activity with -naphthyl acetate as substrate, 23 with -naphthyl propionate, and 20 with -naphthyl butyrate. Seventeen of the zones common to gels developed with any of these substrates were divided into three systems of isozymes, one of which, genetic system 1, has been previously described by Grunder et al. (1965). The zones of system 2 migrated between those of system 1 and those of system 3, the most anodal system. Each of these new systems, like system 1, consisted of three phenotypes controlled, respectively, by a pair of codominant autosomal alleles. In 10 test-cross matings involving systems 1 and 2, not more than two of four possible phenotypes were observed in the offspring of each family, thereby indicating close linkage of the two loci. In order to optimise tissue culture systems and to meet production targets, Mondi Forests biotechnology programme has in the last 2years concentrated efforts on the use of the RITA® temporary immersion bioreactor system. Protocols have been established for six Eucalyptus clones. Results indicate a four- to six-fold increase in yield, in half the time, with the RITA® system when compared with axillary bud proliferation on semi-solid media. Furthermore, plants produced from the RITA® system are hardier and acclimatize better, giving higher yields of hardened-off plants. The establishment of aseptic axillary shoots into the RITA® system is from shoots in the semi-solid system. Highest multiplication was achieved using 30-second flushes of medium every 10min, starting with 50 shoots per vessel. The multiplication cycles in RITA® are between 14 and 18days, compared with 25–28days in a semi-solid system. There is minimal callus evident on the leaves and bases of the stems of plants in the RITA® system and, in addition, cold-tolerant plants have a greater rooting competence when compared with plants coming from the semi-solid system. Ex vitro rooting of RITA® – derived plantlets is substantially better than the plants from the semi-solid media.  相似文献

Until recently equipment for automated chromosome analysis has not been used for routine purposes in clinical cytogenetic laboratories. During a 3 1/2-year period the chromosome laboratory of Rigshospitalet has tested the Magiscan chromosome system under routine conditions and performed the first evaluation of its clinical performance. The system consists of an image processor with a light pen for manual interaction connected to a hard-copy printer and a microscope with a TV camera and a motorized scanning stage for eight slides. Automated metaphase finding takes place without operator assistance. An operator is involved in the analysis after the metaphases are located. Using two of these complete systems, we have performed a total of 4,691 chromosome analyses comprising a count of 10 metaphases, of which three were "eyeball" karyotyped and one was "machine" karyotyped. Presently, two-thirds of our prenatal analyses (amniotic-cell cultures) are carried out with these two machines. A third Magiscan system without scanning stage is used as a "karyotyping-only" system to produce hard-copy karyograms in those cases in which metaphases are manually located and counted in the microscope. Since the end of 1984, 4,773 additional machine karyograms have been produced with this system. With a complete system, a prenatal analysis can be carried out in an average of 35 min. The average time for a machine karyotype is 7 min. Since 1984 the productivity of the laboratory has increased 17%-20% without enlarging the staff.  相似文献

Objectives

To develop a new one-pot polyphosphate kinase (PPK) system with low cost and high efficiency for ATP regeneration in industrial CTP production.

Results

We developed a new one-pot PPK system by applying a three-enzyme cascade (CMK, NDK and PPK) with an in vitro polyP-based ATP regeneration system. The PPK was selected from twenty sources, and was made solvable by fusion expressing with soluble protein and constructing polycistronic plasmids, or co-expressing with molecular chaperones GroES/EL. Activities of other enzymes were optimized by employing fusion expression, tac-pBAD system, Rosetta host and codon optimization. After 24 h, the concentration of CDP and CTP reached 3.8 ± 0.2 and 6.9 ± 0.3 mM l?1 respectively with a yield of approximately 79%. The molar conversion rate of CTP was 51%, and its yield and conversion rate increased 100% from the traditional system.

Conclusions

A new one-pot ATP regeneration system applying polyphosphate kinase for CTP production was developed.

In this paper we study a method for the identification of the unknown parameter of the periodic function and also the first component of the state vector, in a mathematical model which describes the evolution of some diseases with an oro-fecal transmission.To solve the identification problem we use a numerical method to integrate the differential equations system, which reproduces the stability properties of the above mentioned continuous system.The numerical methods which we propose can be applied also to a spatial semi discretization of the reaction-diffusion model which is a diffusive generalization of the system that we consider in this paper.Finally, through an analysis on both the continuous and the discrete system we also obtain a necessary condition on the experimental data in order that a periodic trajectory of the system exists.Work supported by: Progetto Finalizzato Controllo Malattie da Infezione-CNR and by Ministero Pubblica Istruzione  相似文献

Background

Cecropin A (CeA), a natural cationic antimicrobial peptide, exerts potent antimicrobial activity against a broad spectrum of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, making it an attractive candidate substitute for antimicrobials. However, the low production rate and cumbersome, expensive processes required for both its recombinant and chemical synthesis have seriously hindered the exploitation and application of CeA. Here, we utilized a short β-structured self-aggregating protein, ELK16, as a fusion partner of CeA, which allowed the efficient production of high-purity CeA antibacterial peptide with a simple inexpensive process.

Results

In this study, three different approaches to the production of CeA peptide were investigated: an affinity tag (His-tag)-fused protein expression system (AT-HIS system), a cell-free protein expression system (CF system), and a self-assembling peptide (ELK16)-fused protein expression system (SA-ELK16 system). In the AT-HIS and CF systems, the CeA peptide was obtained with purities of 92.1% and 90.4%, respectively, using one or more affinity-chromatographic purification steps. The procedures were tedious and costly, with CeA yields of only 0.41 and 0.93 μg/mg wet cell weight, respectively. Surprisingly, in the SA-ELK16 system, about 6.2 μg/mg wet cell weight of high-purity (approximately 99.8%) CeA peptide was obtained with a simple low-cost process including steps such as centrifugation and acetic acid treatment. An antimicrobial test showed that the high-purity CeA produced in this study had the same antimicrobial activity as synthetic CeA peptide.

Conclusions

In this study, we designed a suitable expression system (SA-ELK16 system) for the production of the antibacterial peptide CeA and compared it with two other protein expression systems. A high yield of high-purity CeA peptide was obtained with the SA-ELK16 system, which greatly reduced the cost and time required for downstream processing. This system may provide a platform for the laboratory scale production of the CeA antibacterial peptide.

Conclusion To sum up, the character of China's existing system is basically all-embracing totalitarianism formed by the combination of the old tradition of feudal-despotism and the new tradition of Stalinism. This system is the basic source of all the social evils in China.The ultimate aim of the democratic movement is to transform the old, allembracing totalitarian system and to establish a democratic, free, humane, and rational new system. The present ruling group is the beneficiary and defender of the existing system. The contradictions and conflicts between reformers who want to transform the old system and the hardliners who want to protect the old system formed the crux of the struggle of the 1989 democratic movement. Because the democratic movement lacked preparation in theory, organization, tactics and strategy, and because the ruling group controls the means of dictatorship — especially the army —military force was used to suppress the democratic movement with brutal bloodshed. In order to promote the democratic movement, we should sum up some lessons and experiences. First, we should study in depth the existing system and oppose feudaldespotism and Stalinism through effective propaganda and education. Parrish & Saila (1970), motivated by the experiments of Paine (1966), constructed a simple mathematical model for a two-prey-one-predator system. They were unable to find, in their model, a set of parametric values with which the three-species system can be stable, whereas a twoprey species system without a predator is unstable. Cramer & May (1972) showed that, in fact, such parametric values exist, and gave the necessary mathematical condition. I have investigated the complete conditions for the stability of the system around the equilibrium point, and show that the conditions must be more stringent than given by Cramer & May (1972). Also, it is shown that the present model can have a globally stable limit cycle in three species even when the equilibrium point is locally unstable.  相似文献

Summary Membrane inlet mass spectrometry was used to monitor liquid phase hydrogen and methane concentrations in samples from laboratory mesophilic (37°C) and thermophilic (55°C) anaerobic digesters supplied with a glucose based medium. The Ks obtained for H2 utilisation for the mesophilic system was 5.5 M compared with 90 M for the thermophilic system. Under overload situations of fatty acids or glucose, hydrogen became more apparent in the mesophilic system in contrast to the thermophilic system in which even gross overload gave only transient detectable hydrogen production.  相似文献

10-12-year-old schoolchildren were divided into three groups: a normal one, a group with psychological problems, and a third one with medical problems. The EEG was recorded at resting and while reading a text. An obviously higher global spatial synchronisation was found in the normal group as compared with the "medical" one. In the "psychological" group, a diffuse hyperresponsiveness was found in the transition state from resting to activity. The above differences seem to be due to a morpho-functional immaturity and a functional insufficiency of two different portions of the brain ascending activating system. Evidently the "medical" group children have an immaturity of the bulbar and midbrain reticular formation, whereas the "psychological" group children have, probably, an immature diencephalic activating system (the thalamus).  相似文献

The information transmission properties of ensembles of MSs and the effect of the gamma system on these properties were studied. Three converging lines of research were taken: (1) the development of information theoretic estimation tools, and the formulation of an operational interpretation for the information rate; (2) animal experiments in which the mutual information rate was estimated and the effect of the gamma system was quantified; (3) simulation of a muscle spindle model with gamma activation in order to corroborate the results of the animal experiments. The main hypothesis was that the gamma system will enhance information theoretic measures that quantify the quality of the sensory neural channel comprised from an ensemble of primary muscle spindle afferents. A random stimulus was applied to a muscle in the hind limb of a cat, while spike trains from several primary MS afferents were recorded simultaneously. The stimulus was administered twice, with an operative and a disconnected gamma system. The mutual information rate between the stimulus and spike trains, as well as other information theoretic measures, was estimated. The information rate of ensembles of MSs increased with increasing ensemble size. However, with an operative gamma system the ensemble effect was much higher. In addition, the ensemble effect was influenced by the stimulus spectrum. A muscle spindle population model with gamma activation was simulated with stimuli that were identical to that of the animal experiments. The simulation results supported the experimental results and corroborated the main hypothesis. The results indicate that the gamma system has an important role in enhancing information transmission from ensembles of MSs to the spinal cord.  相似文献
