In this study, we developed an approach for prosthetic foot design incorporating motion analysis, mechanical testing and computer analysis. Using computer modeling and finite element analysis, a three-dimensional (3D), numerical foot model of the solid ankle cushioned heel (SACH) foot was constructed and analyzed based upon loading conditions obtained from the gait analysis of an amputee and validated experimentally using mechanical testing. The model was then used to address effects of viscoelastic heel performance numerically. This is just one example of the type of parametric analysis and design enabled by this approach. More importantly, by incorporating the unique gait characteristics of the amputee, these parametric analyses may lead to prosthetic feet more appropriately representing a particular user's needs, comfort and activity level. 相似文献

With the worldwide prevalence of cardiovascular diseases, much attention has been focused on simulating the characteristics of the human heart to better understand and treat cardiac disorders. The purpose of this study is to build a finite element model of the left atrium (LA) that incorporates detailed anatomical features and realistic material characteristics to investigate the interaction of heart tissue and surgical instruments. This model is used to facilitate the design of an endoscopically deployable atrial retractor for use in minimally invasive, robotically assisted mitral valve repair. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of a pressurized explanted porcine heart were taken to provide a 3D solid model of the heart geometry, while uniaxial tensile tests of porcine left atrial tissue were conducted to obtain realistic material properties for noncontractile cardiac tissue. A finite element model of the LA was constructed using ANSYS Release 9.0 software and the MRI data. The Mooney-Rivlin hyperelastic material model was chosen to characterize the passive left atrial tissue; material constants were derived from tensile test data. Finite element analysis (FEA) models of a CardioVations Port Access retractor and a prototype endoscopic retractor were constructed to simulate interaction between each instrument and the LA. These contact simulations were used to compare the quality of retraction between the two instruments and to optimize the design of the prototype retractor. Model accuracy was verified by comparing simulated cardiac wall deflections to those measured by MRI. FEA simulations revealed that peak forces of approximately 2.85 N and 2.46 N were required to retract the LA using the Port Access and prototype retractors, respectively. These forces varied nonlinearly with retractor blade displacement. Dilation of the atrial walls and rigid body motion of the chamber were approximately the same for both retractors. Finite element analysis is shown to be an effective tool for analyzing instrument/tissue interactions and for designing surgical instruments. The benefits of this approach to medical device design are significant when compared to the alternatives: constructing prototypes and evaluating them via animal or clinical trials. 相似文献

Cardiovascular stents are small cylindrical devices introduced in stenosed arteries to reopen the lumen and restore blood flow. However, this treatment presents complications, including restenosis, which is the reclosing of the artery's diameter after the insertion of a stent. The structure of the prosthesis penetrates into and injures the walls of the patient's artery. There then follows a proliferation of cells and the formation of scar tissue around the injury, similar to the scarring of other organic tissues. This reaction to the trauma subjects the artery to close. The proposed solution is to develop a Nitinol stent with a progressive expansion device made of polyethylene, allowing smooth and gradual contact between the stent and the artery's wall by creep effect. The purpose of this paper is to describe the technology and methodology for the numerical study of this kind of stent through the finite element method. ANSYS 8.0 software is used to perform the analysis. The Nitinol is modeled with a superelastic law and the polyethylene with a yield hardening law. A first simulation determines the final geometry of the stent laser cut from a small tube. A second simulation examines the behavior of the prosthesis during surgery and over the 4 weeks following the operation. The results demonstrate that a compromise can be reached between a limited expansion prior the inflation of the expandable balloon and a significant expansion by creep of the polymer rings. 相似文献

This paper presents a finite element-based, computational model for analysis of structural damage to trabecular bone tissues. A modulus reduction method was formulated from elasto-plasticity theory, and was used to account for site-specific trabecular bone tissue damage. Trabecular bone tissue damage is illustrated using a large-scale, anatomically accurate, two-dimensional, microstructural finite element model of a human thoracic vertebral body. Four models with varying specifications for damage accumulation were subjected to compressive loading and unloading cycles. The numerical results and experimental validation demonstrated that the modulus reduction method reproduced the non-linear mechanical behaviour of vertebal trabecular bone. The iterative computational approach presented provides a methodology to study trabecular bone damage, and should provide researchers with a computational approach to study bone fracture and repair and to predict vertebral fragility. 相似文献

Due to the recent increase in the number of stent insertion procedures, the number of studies to evaluate the mechanical behaviors of stents, such as the stress and deformation states, using finite element analysis is also increasing. However, it is still not easy to design stents that are uniformly expanded and show enough radial strength and flexibility. Therefore, in this study, the Taguchi method and finite element analysis were used to determine a set of optimal design variables for unit patterns of stents, and a new design approach was developed to realize uniform expansion, enough radial strength and good flexibility. The stent designed using the new design approach was verified by experiments. 相似文献

In this paper, a thermo-mechanical analysis of shape memory polyurethane foams (SMPUFs) with aiding of a finite element model (FEM) for treating cerebral aneurysms (CAs) is introduced. Since the deformation of foam cells is extremely difficult to observe experimentally due to their small size, a structural cell-assembly model is established in this work via finite element modeling to examine all-level deformation details. Representative volume elements of random equilateral Kelvin open-cell microstructures are adopted for the cell foam. Also, a user-defined material subroutine (UMAT) is developed based on a thermo-visco-elastic constitutive model for SMPUFs, and implemented in the ABAQUS software package. The model is able to capture thermo-mechanical responses of SMPUFs for a full shape memory thermodynamic cycle. One of the latest treatments of CAs is filling the inside of aneurysms with SMPUFs. The developed FEM is conducted on patient-specific basilar aneurysms treated by SMPUFs. Three sizes of foams are selected for the filling inside of the aneurysm and then governing boundary conditions and loadings are applied to the foams. The results of the distribution of stress and displacement in the absence and presence of the foam are compared. Due to the absence of similar results in the specialized literature, this paper is likely to fill a gap in the state of the art of this problem and provide pertinent results that are instrumental in the design of SMPUFs for treating CAs. 相似文献

In this paper, we generated finite element (FE) models to predict the contact pressure between a foam mattress and the human body in a supine position. Twenty-year-old males were used for three-dimensional scanning to produce the FE human models, which was composed of skin and muscle tissue. A linear elastic isotropic material model was used for the skin, and the Mooney–Rivlin model was used for the muscle tissue because it can effectively represent the nonlinear behavior of muscle. The contact pressure between the human model and the mattress was predicted by numerical simulation. The human models were validated by comparing the body pressure distribution obtained from the same human subject when he was lying on two different mattress types. The experimental results showed that the slope of the lower part of the mattress caused a decrease in the contact pressure at the heels, and the effect of bone structure was most pronounced in the scapula. After inserting a simple structure to function as the scapula, the contact pressure predicted by the FE human models was consistent with the experimental body pressure distribution for all body parts. These results suggest that the models proposed in this paper will be useful to researchers and designers of products related to the prevention of pressure ulcers. 相似文献

Crack growths in compact bones driven by various strain rate levels were studied using finite element modeling. The energy resistance curves in bovine femur cortical bones were characterized, whereas the orthotropic viscoelasticity in bone materials was accounted for to assess the effect of strain rate on the energy resistance curve. The models were also used to justify the anticipated plane strain response as a result of rather thick specimens used in experiments. Similarities were found between the experimental and model results when crack resistance ability exhibited in bones with slow loading rates, while unstable crack growth existed in bones with rapid loading rates. The critical energy release rates slightly decreased with the increase in strain rates. The hybrid experimental and computational method introduced in this study could be beneficial for application in fracture study in which standard experiments cannot be validly performed. 相似文献

Statistical shape analysis was conducted on 15 pairs (left and right) of human kidneys. It was shown that the left and right kidney were significantly different in size and shape. In addition, several common modes of kidney variation were identified using statistical shape analysis. Semi-automatic mesh morphing techniques have been developed to efficiently create subject specific meshes from a template mesh with a similar geometry. Subject specific meshes as well as probabilistic kidney meshes were created from a template mesh. Mesh quality remained about the same as the template mesh while only taking a fraction of the time to create the mesh from scratch or morph with manually identified landmarks. This technique can help enhance the quality of information gathered from experimental testing with subject specific meshes as well as help to more efficiently predict injury by creating models with the mean shape as well as models at the extremes for each principal component. 相似文献

Clinically, different foot arch heights are associated with different tissue injuries to the foot. To investigate the possible factors contributing to the difference in foot arch heights, previous studies have mostly measured foot pressure in either low-arched or high-arched feet. However, little information exists on stress variation inside the foot with different arch heights. Therefore, this study aimed to implement the finite element (FE) method to analyse the influence of different foot arches. This study established a 3D foot FE model using software ANSYS 11.0. After validating the FE model, this study created low-arched, high-arched and normal-arched foot FE models. The FE analysis found that both the stress and strain on the plantar fascia and metatarsal were higher in the high-arched foot, whereas the stress and strain on the calcaneous, navicular and cuboid were higher in low-arched foot. Additionally, forefoot pressure was increased with an increase in arch height. 相似文献

SUMMARY: The OligoFaktory is a set of tools for the design, on an arbitrary number of target sequences, of high-quality long oligonucleotide for micro-array, of primer pair for PCR, of siRNA and more. The user-centered interface exists in two flavours: a web portal and a standalone software for Mac OS X Tiger. A unified presentation of results provides overviews with distribution charts and relative location bar graphs, as well as detailed features for each oligonucleotide. Input and output files conform to a common XML interchange file format to allow both automatic generation of input data, archiving, and post-processing of results. The design pipeline can use BLAST servers to evaluate specificity of selected oligonucleotides. The football helmet is used to help mitigate the occurrence of impact-related traumatic (TBI) and minor traumatic brain injuries (mTBI) in the game of American football. While the current helmet design methodology may be adequate for reducing linear acceleration of the head and minimizing TBI, it however has had less effect in minimizing mTBI. The objectives of this study are (a) to develop and validate a coupled finite element (FE) model of a football helmet and the human body, and (b) to assess responses of different regions of the brain to two different impact conditions – frontal oblique and crown impact conditions. The FE helmet model was validated using experimental results of drop tests. Subsequently, the integrated helmet–human body FE model was used to assess the responses of different regions of the brain to impact loads. Strain-rate, strain, and stress measures in the corpus callosum, midbrain, and brain stem were assessed. Results show that maximum strain-rates of 27 and 19 s ?1 are observed in the brain-stem and mid-brain, respectively. This could potentially lead to axonal injuries and neuronal cell death during crown impact conditions. The developed experimental-numerical framework can be used in the study of other helmet-related impact conditions. 相似文献

Zymotis bioreactors for solid-state fermentation (SSF) are packed-bed bioreactors with internal cooling plates. This design has potential to overcome the problem of heat removal, which is one of the main challenges in SSF. In ordinary packed-bed bioreactors, which lack internal plates, large axial temperature gradients arise, leading to poor microbial growth in the end of the bed near the air outlet. The Zymotis design is suitable for SSF processes in which the substrate bed must be maintained static, but little is known about how to design and operate Zymotis bioreactors. We use a two-dimensional heat transfer model, describing the growth of Aspergillus niger on a starchy substrate, to provide guidelines for the optimum design and operation of Zymotis bioreactors. As for ordinary packed-beds, the superficial velocity of the process air is a key variable. However, the Zymotis design introduces other important variables, namely, the spacing between the internal cooling plates and the temperature of the cooling water. High productivities can be achieved at large scale, but only if small spacings between the cooling plates are used, and if the cooling water temperature is varied during the fermentation in response to bed temperatures. 相似文献

Proteases play a fundamental role in the control of intra- and extra-cellular processes by binding and cleaving specific amino acid sequences. Identifying these targets is extremely challenging. Current computational attempts to predict cleavage sites are limited, representing these amino acid sequences as patterns or frequency matrices. Here we present PoPS, a publicly accessible bioinformatics tool (http://pops.csse.monash.edu.au/) that provides a novel method for building computational models of protease specificity, which while still being based on these amino acid sequences, can be built from any experimental data or expert knowledge available to the user. PoPS specificity models can be used to predict and rank likely cleavages within a single substrate, and within entire proteomes. Other factors, such as the secondary or tertiary structure of the substrate, can be used to screen unlikely sites. Furthermore, the tool also provides facilities to infer, compare and test models, and to store them in a publicly accessible database. 相似文献

正Dear Editor,Genome editing, especially the newly developed CRISPR technology, is now widely implemented for diverse medical and agricultural applications (Puchta, 2018). However, for genome editing, the DNA cassettes encoding the editing components are usually assembled and delivered into the cells of organisms (Cong et al., 2013). 相似文献
