Abstract. A reduction in the locomotor capacity of gravid females is considered to be a cost of reproduction if it leads to an increased risk of mortality. In this study, we measured the change in endurance between gravid and postgravid female side-blotched lizards ( Uta stansburiana ) as a test of the cost of reproduction. We also altered reproductive investment in some females by direct ovarian manipulation (yolkectomy), which decreased reproductive burden by 30%. Regardless of experimental treatment, all females had lower endurance when gravid. Endurance was 28% lower in gravid females from the yolkectomy treatment and 31% lower in the unmanipulated females relative to postoviposition females. The experimental reduction in clutch mass resulted in a 21% increase in endurance of gravid yolkectomy females relative to control females. Postovipositional endurance was significantly higher in the yolkectomized females than unmanipulated females, which suggests that the cost of reproduction carries over to postoviposition performance. Unmanipulated females exhibited a significant negative association between endurance and size-specific burden. Endurance was not correlated with clutch size or size-specific burden in the yolkectomy females. Survivorship to the second clutch was higher in the yolkectomy females. The results from a logistic regression showed the probability of survival to the second clutch was significantly and positively associated with endurance after controlling for the effects of treatment. Our analyses demonstrated that the decrement in performance associated with current reproductive investment represents a cost of reproduction expressed as diminished locomotor performance and lowered survivorship to the next clutch.  相似文献

Summary In some reptiles, gravid females bask more, and/or maintain higher body temperatures than do males or non-gravid females. This phenomenon is usually explained in terms of the female or her offspring benefitting from accelerated embryogenesis and early birth, but the effect of increased basking on gestation period has not been studied. In a laboratory experiment, gestation periods of gravid female skinks (Eulamprus tympanum) decreased with the duration of access to radiant heat. Embryonic development was more rapid in the laboratory than in the field, and there were no apparent adverse effects of this accelerated gestation on females or offspring. Number and mass of offspring, survival rates of embryos, relative clutch mass and female mass before and after parturition were not influenced by the decrease in gestation period caused by increased basking. Females selected similar temperatures in the laboratory and field (32° C), despite the availability of higher temperatures in the laboratory. Thus, gestation in the laboratory was accelerated by spending longer periods at usual basking temperatures, rather than by selecting higher temperatures. In the field, mean and modal body temperatures of active animals were similar in gravid females, males and non-gravid females, but gravid females appear to bask more of the time, even in cloudy weather when other members of the population do not bask. Hence, an apparent similarity in thermal regimes of gravid and non-gravid animals may mask significant underlying differences in thermoregulatory strategies.  相似文献

Pregnancy is associated with reduced locomotor performance in several reptile species, but the reasons for this reduction remain unclear. Previous authors generally have assumed that the decreased maternal mobility is due to the physical burden of the clutch, but our data on a viviparous Tasmanian scincid lizard (Niveoscincus microlepidotum) suggest a different interpretation. Running speeds of gravid female skinks decrease during gestation (as litter mass increases), but this locomotor impairment is due to physiological changes associated with pregnancy, rather than simple physical burdening. Maternal running speeds are unrelated to litter masses, and do not increase in the week after parturition. Females with very large abdominal fat‐bodies (due to ad libitum feeding in the laboratory), equivalent in mass to the litter, nonetheless run rapidly. If the locomotor ‘costs’ of reproduction reflect all‐or‐none physiological changes associated with pregnancy, then the magnitude of such costs may correlate only weakly with the actual level of reproductive investment. Because life‐history models predict that the relationship between fecundity and ‘cost’ has important evolutionary consequences, our results highlight the need to clarify the causal basis for locomotor impairment in gravid reptiles.  相似文献

Life-history theory predicts that “costs” of reproduction may be important evolutionary determinants of reproductive investment; previous studies on reptiles indicate that decrements to maternal mobility may be among the most important components of such costs. Biomechanical models suggest that reproductive investment in aquatic snakes may be constrained by the important locomotory role of the posterior part of the body during swimming: carrying eggs or offspring in this region would more seriously impair locomotory efficiency in swimming than in terrestrial lateral undulation. If this constraint is important, aquatic snakes would be expected to have lower clutch masses relative to body mass than terrestrial species and to carry the clutch in a more anterior position (commencing at the same proportion of maternal body length anteriorly, but not extending as far posteriorly). Comparisons between aquatic and terrestrial snakes of several families confirm these predictions. Phylogenetic analysis suggests that this pattern of reduced reproductive investment has evolved independently in each of the four ophidian lineages that contain marine species (acrochordids, homalopsine colubrids, laticaudid sea snakes, and hydrophiid sea snakes). Although it thus seems likely that these patterns represent adaptations to aquatic versus terrestrial life, the nature of the selective forces involved remains speculative. The hypothesis based on locomotory impairment of gravid females has better empirical support than any alternative hypothesis, as it successfully predicts modifications in the position of the clutch within the female's body, as well as overall reduced reproductive investment.  相似文献

Current foraging models limit the decision‐making process of animals to the food searching and consuming phase. The post‐consummatory phase of feeding may influence optimal meal size for some species as a morphologic change often results from feeding. In snakes, a single prey item can lead to abrupt increases in body mass, thus influencing locomotor performance. Identifying factors affecting locomotor performance can help predict behaviors that should maximize an animal's chance of evading predators. Although many snakes ingest large percentages of their body mass, not much work has examined the post‐consummatory effects of ingesting bulky prey differing in relative mass. I examined the locomotor performance and antipredator tactics of hatchling trinket snakes (Elaphe helena) after subjecting snakes to mice prey varying by relative mass differences of 20–35%, 50–59% or 70–79% of an individual hatchling's body mass. Snakes in treatment groups were compared with snakes in a control group (0%). Meal size‐affected locomotor parameters such as burst speed, endurance, and endurance times for hatchlings that ingested 50–59% and 70–79% of their body mass (p < 0.001). Recent feeding also affected the types of antipredator modes employed. Hatchlings in the 0% and 20–35% treatments exhibited behaviors that were categorized as active and threatening, while hatchlings in the 50–59% and 70–79% treatments exhibited stationary, neutral, and cryptic behaviors. Although snakes may become more reclusive following a meal, this study demonstrates that relative prey mass affects the ability of hatchling trinket snakes to flee from a predator. In turn, these results suggest that the post‐consummatory effects of foraging should be considered in optimal foraging models for organisms that consume a substantial portion of their body mass during a single feeding.  相似文献

Reproduction involves costs and benefits, whereby increased expenditure into current reproduction can reduce future reproductive success. Costs of reproduction, often assessed using the reduction in locomotor speed, have become well established in temperate-zone lizard species. However, substantial differences in biotic conditions and life-history traits between temperate- and tropical-zone lizards suggest that such costs may be different or of less importance for tropical species. This study examined the effects of reproduction on locomotor speed in the tropical invariant-clutch producing lizard Carlia rubrigularis . Counter to predictions and despite a low relative clutch mass (RCM), gravid and post-oviposition females experienced a reduction in locomotor speed with a physiological basis that was unrelated to the level of reproductive investment. In addition, gravid and postoviposition females exhibited locomotor speeds that were inversely related to the timing of oviposition and approached the speed of non-reproductive females after 3 weeks of oviposition. These results suggest that in addition to RCM, selection may act to reduce the period of recovery in species with extended reproductive seasons and which make numerous bouts of reproduction, such as C. rubrigularis .  相似文献

Locomotor ability is well-documented to decrease in gravid female lizards. However, no studies have examined what proportion of maximal sprint speed capacity gravid females use in nature or how a reduction in maximal capacity translates to changes in sprint speeds used in nature. Gravid females may compensate for reduced locomotor ability by increasing the proportion of their maximal capacity used in nature, or by changing their antipredator behaviour. I measured maximal sprint speed in the laboratory for female collared lizards (Crotaphytus collaris) while gravid and nongravid and then compared those to speeds used in the field while foraging and escaping predators, and also while gravid and nongravid. Females had significantly lower maximal sprint speed capacity while gravid, and they ran slower while foraging and escaping predators. However, gravid females did not increase the proportion of maximal capacity used in those contexts compared to when not gravid. Gravid females compensated for reduced locomotor capacity by staying closer to refugia but not by remaining more cryptic. These results suggest that the costs of reduced locomotor capacity may not be associated with direct costs while foraging or escaping predators, but instead with potential indirect effects associated with the change in antipredator behaviour.  相似文献

We examined whether sex, reproductive status, body size, or body temperature of prairie rattlesnakes (Crotalus viridis viridis) was related to when snakes rattled in response to an approaching observer. We found that gravid females allowed significantly closer approaches than males, suggesting that females relied on crypsis to avoid predation, possibly because pregnancy constrained their locomotive ability. Smaller snakes allowed significantly closer approaches than did larger snakes. Smaller snakes may be more cryptic or slower, which may influence their waiting to rattle until the observer was close. Overall, we found no consistent relationship between the distance from the observer that a snake rattled and its body temperature. However, cooler gravid females allowed closer approaches by the observer than did warmer gravid females. In summary, reproductive status, body size, and body temperature appear to influence the costs and benefits of crypsis vs. active defense of rattlesnakes.  相似文献

Although information concerning variation among and within populations is essential to understanding an organism's life history, little is known of such variation in any species of scorpion. We show that reproductive investment by the scorpion Centruroides vittatus varied among three Texas populations during one reproductive season. Females from the Kickapoo population produced smaller offspring and larger litters than females from the Independence Creek or Decatur populations; this pattern remained when adjusting for among population variation in either female mass or total litter mass. Relative clutch mass (RCM) and within-litter variability in offspring mass (V*) did not differ among populations. Among-population variation may result from genetic differences or from phenotypically plastic responses to differing environments. Within populations, the interrelationships among reproductive variables were similar for Decatur and Independence Creek: females investing more in reproduction (measured by total litter mass, TLM) produced larger litters and larger offspring, and V* decreased with increased mean offspring mass (and with decreased litter size at Decatur). At Kickapoo, larger females produced larger litters and had larger TLM; females investing more in reproduction produced larger litters but not larger offspring. Within litter variability in offspring mass was not correlated with any reproductive variables in this latter population. These patterns may be explained by the fractional clutch hypothesis, the inability of females precisely to control investment among offspring or morphological constraints on reproduction.  相似文献

1. A major focus of life-history research has been the analysis of reproductive effort (RE). However, while clearly defined in theory, RE has proved very difficult to measure. Consequently, researchers have looked for indices that estimate the components of RE. Uncritical use of indices of reproductive investment, such as measures of costs of reproduction, without verification of the underlying assumptions of the link between these traits, may lead to spurious conclusions. In this paper, the common assumption that the physical burden of the clutch impairs locomotor ability in gravid reptiles is examined.
2. Two neighbouring populations of Australian scincid lizards ( Lampropholis guichenoti) are similar in adult body sizes, body shapes and reproductive output (egg sizes, clutch sizes, relative clutch masses).
3. Despite morphological and reproductive similarities, the effects of pregnancy on maternal locomotor ability (running speeds, as measured in a laboratory raceway) differed dramatically between the two populations.
4. Lizards from the two populations ran at similar speeds when nongravid (i.e. after egg-laying), but pregnancy significantly reduced running speeds in one population and increased them in the other. Thus, superficial similarities in body size and reproductive output masked a strong divergence in the locomotor 'costs' of reproduction.
5. Caution is advised if using simple measures of reproductive output (e.g. relative clutch mass) as indices of reproductive effort, or to generalize results even among conspecific populations.  相似文献

Costs of reproduction are any aspect of current reproduction that has the potential to reduce survivorship or reproductive output, and may include physiological costs or increased risks. Females of many species experience increased body mass, and increased girth, when gravid. Increased body mass reduces running speed and increases the cost of locomotion during pregnancy, but few studies have examined the cost of increased girth. If increased girth of gravid females reduces access to shelter from predators or the elements, increased girth could constitute a cost of reproduction. In the laboratory, we experimentally tested whether access to crevices was limited in viviparous, saxicolous female lizards (Eulamprus brachysoma), which use crevices for shelter, by measuring access to artificial crevices of known widths, and body height during and after pregnancy. Gravid E. brachysoma had significantly greater body height (11.2% on average), and as a result were forced to use significantly wider crevices (18.4% wider on average) than post‐parturition. Females with larger clutch sizes had wider mid‐bodies and required larger crevices. Control females, which were not gravid at either time of testing, showed no significant change in the size of crevice they could enter over time. If access to narrow crevices provides advantages such as protection from predators, or is important for thermoregulation, then gravid females may suffer a cost of reproduction because their access to narrower crevices is limited.  相似文献

We exposed females of a highly placentotrophic viviparous scincid lizard (Pseudemoia pagenstecheri) to various environmental factors during pregnancy, and quantified the effects of these treatments on their offspring. The clear result was that the phenotypes of neonatal lizards can be substantially modified by the environment that their mother experiences during gestation. Restricting prey availability to the females reduced the size of their offspring. Limiting the females' basking opportunities delayed their seasonal timing of parturition, and modified body proportions (tail length relative to snout-vent length) of the neonates. More surprisingly, female lizards that were regularly exposed to the scent of sympatric lizard-eating snakes gave birth to offspring that were heavier, had unusually long tails relative to body length, and were highly sensitive to the odour of those snakes (as measured by tongue-flick responses). The neonates' antipredator responses were also modified by the experimental treatment to which their mother was exposed. The modifications in body mass, tail length and response to snake scent plausibly reduce the offspring's vulnerability to predatory snakes, and hence may constitute adaptive maternal manipulations of the neonatal phenotype. A five-year mark-recapture study at Sella Nevea, a montane (1100 m a.s.1.) site in the Carnic Alps, provided information on diets, growth rates, and reproductive output in an Italian population of the wide-ranging grass snake, Natrix natrix. Our snakes resembled a previously-studied population in lowland Sweden in terms of body size at sexual maturation in females (70 cm) and mean adult female body length (82 cm). However, growth rates were lower in our population, and sexual maturation was delayed (6–8 years, versus 4–5 years in Sweden), perhaps because of the cool climate and relatively brief growing period each year. Females produced a single clutch of 4–24 eggs in late July each year. Larger females produced larger clutches, but clutch size relative to maternal size was lower than in Swedish grass snakes. Hatchling sizes and Relative Clutch Masses (RCMs) did not shift with increasing female size. RCMs may provide a useful index of 'costs of reproduction' in this population, because females with high RCMs were very emaciated after oviposition, and hence may experience a greater risk of mortality, as well as a high energy expenditure. Prolonged incubation gave rise to longer, thinner hatchlings, but the low environmental temperatures at the study site may favour early hatching (and hence, result in a shorter fatter hatchling emerging from the egg, with more of its energy stores unused). Compared to sympatric viviparous snakes ( Coronella austriaca and Vipera berus ), the oviparous grass snakes can achieve a much higher reproductive output owing to a larger clutch size and more frequent reproduction (annual, rather than biennial or triennial). The abundant prey resource used by grass snakes (amphibians) may also enable them to recoup energy more rapidly after reproduction; dietary composition shifts ontogenetically in both sexes, with the largest prey (mice and adult toads) taken primarily by large female snakes.  相似文献

Yellow‐lipped sea kraits (Laticauda colubrina) are amphibious in their habits. We measured their locomotor speeds in water and on land to investigate two topics: (1) to what degree have adaptations to increase swimming speed (paddle‐like tail etc.) reduced terrestrial locomotor ability in sea kraits?; and (2) do a sea krait’s sex and body size influence its locomotor ability in these two habitats, as might be expected from the fact that different age and sex classes of sea kraits use the marine and terrestrial environments in different ways? To estimate ancestral states for locomotor performance, we measured speeds of three species of Australian terrestrial elapids that spend part of their time foraging in water. The evolutionary modifications of Laticauda for marine life have enhanced their swimming speeds by about 60%, but decreased their terrestrial locomotor speed by about 80%. Larger snakes moved faster than smaller individuals in absolute terms but were slower in terms of body lengths travelled per second, especially on land. Male sea kraits were faster than females (independent of the body‐size effect), especially on land. Prey items in the gut reduced locomotor speeds both on land and in water. Proteroglyphous snakes may offer exceptional opportunities to study phylogenetic shifts in locomotor ability, because (1) they display multiple independent evolutionary shifts from terrestrial to aquatic habits, and (2) one proteroglyph lineage (the laticaudids) displays considerable intraspecific and interspecific diversity in terms of the degree to which they use terrestrial vs. aquatic habitats.  相似文献

Recent conceptual advances in physiological ecology emphasize the potential selective importance of whole-animal performance. Empirical studies of locomotor performance in reptiles have revealed surprising amounts of individual variation in speed and stamina. The present study is the first in a series examining the genetic basis of variation in locomotor performance, activity metabolism, and associated behaviors in garter snakes. Maximal sprint crawling speed, treadmill endurance, and antipredator displays (Arnold and Bennett, 1984; exhibited as snakes reached exhaustion on the treadmill) were measured for approximately six offspring (presumed to be full siblings) from each of 46 wild-caught gravid garter snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis). Each character was measured on two days; all were individually repeatable. Correlations of these characters with body mass, snout–vent length, age at testing, litter size, dam mass, and dam snout–vent length were removed by computing residuals from multiple-regression equations. These residuals were used in subsequent genetic analyses. Approximate coefficients of variation of residuals were 17% for speed, 48% for endurance, and 31% for antipredator displays. Broad-sense heritabilities were significant for all characters: speed h2 = 0.58; stamina h2 = 0.70; antipredator display h2 = 0.42. All three residual characters showed positive and statistically significant phenotypic correlations (r = 0.19–0.36). Genetic correlations (estimated and tested by restricted maximum likelihood) among residuals were positive and highly significant between speed and endurance (0.58), but nonsignificant between speed and antipredator display (0.43), and between endurance and antipredator display (0.26). All environmental correlations were nonsignificant. These data suggest that, contrary to expectations based on previous physiological studies, there may be no necessary evolutionary trade-off between speed and stamina in these animals. This tentative conclusion will have important implications for future theoretical studies of the evolution of locomotor performance and associated antipredator behaviors.  相似文献

One demand placed exclusively on the musculoskeletal systemof females is maintaining locomotor performance with an increasingload over the reproductive cycle. Here, we examine whether gravid(i.e., "pregnant") iguanas can increase their force and powerproduction to support, stabilize, and accelerate the additionalmass of a clutch of eggs. At any acceleration, gravid iguanasproduced very high mechanical power (average total power = 673w/kg; total peak power = 1175 w/kg). While the increase in totalpower was partly a result of greater propulsive power (averagepropulsive power = 25% higher, peak propulsive power = 38% higher),increased vertical power (roughly 200% increase) was the maincontributor. Gravid iguanas were also able to increase peakforces (propulsive = 23%, mediolateral = 44%, vertical = 42%),and step duration (44%) resulting in greater impulses (i.e.,the sum of force produced during a step) to accelerate, balance,and support their increased mass. The increase in step durationand smaller increase in peak propulsive force suggests thatgravid iguanas may be force-limited in the direction of motion.We discuss how biomechanical constraints due to females’reproductive role may influence the evolution of the femalemusculoskeletal systems and contribute to the evolution andmaintenance of ecological dimorphism in lizards.  相似文献

For ectotherms, environmental temperatures influence numerous life history characteristics, and the body temperatures (Tb) selected by individuals can affect offspring fitness and parental survival. Reproductive trade‐offs may therefore ensue for gravid females, because temperatures conducive to embryonic development may compromise females' body condition. We tested whether reproduction influenced thermoregulation in female Arizona Bark Scorpions (Centruroides sculpturatus). We predicted that gravid females select higher Tb and thermoregulate more precisely than nonreproductive females. Gravid C. sculpturatus gain body mass throughout gestation, which exposes larger portions of their pleural membrane, possibly increasing their rates of transcuticular water loss in arid environments. Accordingly, we tested whether gravid C. sculpturatus lose water faster than nonreproductive females. We determined the preferred Tb of female scorpions in a thermal gradient and measured water loss rates using flow‐through respirometry. Gravid females preferred significantly higher Tb than nonreproductive females, suggesting that gravid C. sculpturatus alter their thermoregulatory behaviour to promote offspring fitness. However, all scorpions thermoregulated with equal precision, perhaps because arid conditions create selective pressure on all females to thermoregulate effectively. Gravid females lost water faster than nonreproductive animals, indicating that greater exposure of the pleural membrane during gestation enhances the desiccation risk of reproductive females. Our findings suggest that gravid C. sculpturatus experience a trade‐off, whereby selection of higher Tb and increased mass during gestation increase females' susceptibility to water loss, and thus their mortality risk. Elucidating the mechanisms that influence thermal preferences may reveal how reproductive trade‐offs shape the life history of ectotherms in arid environments.  相似文献

Understanding the proximate determinants of phenotypic variations in life-history traits can provide powerful insights into a species' life-history strategies. I experimentally manipulated availability of food (high vs low) to examine plasticity in the reproductive traits of northern grass lizards, Takydromus septentrionalis (Lacertidae), from eastern China. Food availability significantly affected reproductive frequency and thereby seasonal reproductive output, but had little effect on reproductive output per clutch. Low-food females postponed reproduction and produced less clutches in the reproductive season than did high-food females. After producing their second clutches, low-food females were in lower body condition than the high-food counterparts. By the end of the experiment, however, all females exhibited similar body condition. Clutch size and clutch mass differed between the first and second clutches but not between the treatments. Egg size and phenotypic traits of hatchlings (body size, morphology and locomotor performance) in T. septentrionalis did not vary significantly from first to second clutches nor between the two treatments. These results support optimal egg size (offspring) theory. Female T. septentrionali s "decide" whether or not to reproduce largely based on current energy intake; lowered feeding rates thus delay oviposition and reduce reproductive frequency. In contrast, clutch size, egg size and relative clutch mass remain unchanged.  相似文献

Summary Data on the relative clutch mass of snakes are summarized for over 100 populations. RCM was significantly lower in live bearing versus egg laying forms. We suggest that the longer reproductive season of viviparous snakes results in higher overall mortality compared to oviparous species; by reducing RCM, viviparous snakes may reduce this risk of mortality. Unlike lizards, no differences in RCM were found between categories of either escape behavior or foraging mode, possibly because detailed information on these behaviors are lacking for most snakes. In four populations examined, RCM did not vary among years. When compared to lizards, snakes demonstrate significantly higher RCM, perhaps owing to a more energetically efficient means of locomotion. Our data support the contention that RCM should be considered a separate and distinctive life-history characteristic of reptiles.  相似文献

Parks and nature reserves protect important natural habitats but also provide public opportunities for outdoor recreational activities that may have unintended negative effects on wildlife. We examined the response of eastern massasauga rattlesnakes (Sistrurus catenatus catenatus) to inadvertent disturbance by humans in Killbear Provincial Park, Ontario, Canada. Radio telemetry of 25 adult snakes over two active seasons revealed that, as disturbance increased, gravid females were less visible to observers, but the visibility of non-gravid females and males did not change. Mean distance moved per day decreased and mean time between moves greater than 10 m increased in gravid females, non-gravid females and males with increasing exposure to human disturbance. However, mark-recapture data revealed no differences in the condition or growth rates of snakes, or in the litter size of gravid females, between individuals captured in disturbed and undisturbed study areas. While it is possible that the behavioral responses we observed are not sufficient to have life history consequences, more detailed information on the exposure of individual snakes to human activity is necessary before the conclusion that disturbance is not detrimental to snakes can be accepted. Similarly, other potential negative effects of human disturbance not investigated here remain to be explored.  相似文献
